Christ, no contest.

Japanese anime are films--complex, imaginative, world of their own.

Disney flicks are brain dead.

Noel Vera: Please don't misuse the name of the Lord.

Disney hands down!

Whatever ANYONE else says, I think Disney started it all. Long before Japanese anime, Disney ruled! And Disney still rules!

Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, knows Mickey Mouse but not everyone knows Lupin or Eugene.

The Rock says this, even in ancient Japanese manuscripts, the "anime" style that we are familiar with was already evident. The Japanese anime and manga are steeped in Japanese culture and have been in existence way before Walt Disney. http://www.pinoyexchange.com/thinker.gif and althought The Rock loves watching Walt Disney films for their amusing stories, beautiful songs, and great characters, Japanese anime is just on a whole different level.

Walt Disney can't do any animation that can be targeted for a more mature audience and they have to guarantee happy endings. that's just not realistic enough. the scope and breadth of Japanese anime is much more diverse than any single animation company in the U.S. From psychological thrillers, sword and sorcery, giant mech robots, romantic comedies, morality plays, etc. Disney is just too scared of losing money and thier core youth audience to even think of doing that kind of animation.

Disney may be great, but anime rules.

If you smell what The Rock is cookin!

well said Dwayne!

Disney is great, but anime rules.
In terms of technical achievement, disney has no parallel. Video game companies have modeled their graphics and 3D engines after Disney's initial success with Beauty and the Beast. Disney's tie-up with Squaresoft and Pixar are just a few reasons why they'll be on top for a long time.
But in terms of stories, characters and overall variety. anime has to be it. My all-time favorites include Ninja Scroll, Do You Remember Love? , Char's counterattack, and all superrobots.

I agree with the Rock, basically, except on a few minor points.

Disney looks great only because they throw a lot of money at their films. What's their budget like--40 to 70 million? They can offer 24 frames a second, full motion animation, while most anime, even the gorgeously shot Akira, go up to only 18 frames a second, maybe as little as 12.

Dinsey films are EXPENSIVE. That's why they're impressive. If money impresses you, then Disney will impress you.

And I can't believe what they did to The Little Mermaid. Have you read the original story? The film by Disney is an amusing little trifle; the original story is a great work of literature, a tragic story about a young girl who throws everything away for love, including her tongue.

Yes--they cut out her tongue so she could have legs. Now why didn't Disney show that? Becuase they have no cojones.

Same with Aladdin. The original story had more moral ambiguities and complexity than the simpleminded cartoon that ended up on the screen.

And all Disney films look alike. Song and dance number, some young teenager in an American teenage voice who is misunderstood by their parent, a villain with the best lines, a comic sidekick, a happy ending.

They have tried for something different lately, with Hunchback of the Notre Dame and its sexually disturbed priest (but have you read the original novel? The Hunchback DIED!). Also Tarzan, which for the first twenty to forty minutes is the best Tarzan ever put on film. Then the girl and villain arrive, and it's back to standard Disney fare.

They can keep trying, but anime has always been great, and has always been different from the beginning.

That's not even mentioning our own animators--people like Ricky Orellano, or Ellen Ramos, or Aureus Solito (to name a few), whose films are, in my opinion, more imaginative and colorful and beautiful than anything Disney has done.

Disney is brain dead.

I don't think this is even a valid argument.
For one thing Disney is for kids and for those who fancy themselves "kids at heart". Disney offers comfy, happy sing along versions of reality while anime runs the gamut of styles from the whimsical to the plain violent and even pornographic. And Pokemon doesn't count.

"Disney is for children"

Watch Miyazaki's films. Particularly My Neighbor Totoro or Kiki's Delivery Service.

No violence. The films actually promote family values, and are full of love and wholesomeness.

They don't even have villains! Not like Disney flicks. EVERYONE in the two films is kind and generous.

Yet in terms of characterization, imagination, and sheer storytelling, they are far and away better than anything Disney has done or attempted to do.

In "Totoro," a Japanese family--the father and two girls--moving into a new home while the mother is sick in the hospital with spinal tuberculosis. The two children miss her terribly, of course, which is perhaps why they see--or imagine--a magical forest creature named "Totoro."

In "Kiki," a 13 year old witch named Kiki leaves home and family to look for another city and set up her own practice (this is a tradition). She has to deal with living on her own, findinge herself a job, and learning how to cope with her magic powers, which Miyazaki compares to artistic talent or inspiration.

Very sophisticated and subtle stories--yet children appreciate and love them, and I have yet to see the Disney film that even approaches this kind of artistry.

And yes, I've tested the two films on children--my four year old daughter loves them both, dearly.

I speak as someone who's seen plenty of Disney films--from their popular hits to their unpopular, to the lesser known (The Aristocats, The Fox and the Hound, The Jungle Book, Robin Hood), to the classics (Pinocchio, the original Fantasia), to the shorts (The Old Mill, The Hare and the Tortoise, The Three Little Pigs).

Okay, Disney is not brain dead. But anime--and especially Miyazaki, whose domain of interest intersects Disney's--is infinitely better.

It's no contest.

Another thing...

Hasn't anyone noticed that Disney has dominated our youth for decades? From mugs to toys to towels to freaking diapers, for crying out loud--all with the Disney trademark.

There's even Hunchback of the Notre Dame cologne! I'm not kidding! Check out Rustan's. I mean, what can the tagline be--"Use this cologne and you'll smell like a hunchback?"

Can we actually allow such a huge and powerful commercial conglomeration to dominate the imagination of our children?

Think about it.

Hands down I agree with you.I also wathced Miyazaki's works and to tell everyone that I left the room not finishing "Grave of the fireflies" kasi nakakiyak sya at baka di ko makontrol yung emotios ko over the story. I never recalled that disney made me shed a tear for their story.

disney has happy, live-happily-ever-after stories. they also have fun, kiddy musicals. the graphics and especially w/ the collaboration of pixar, their cg's are getting better.
they also manage to mangle and decapitate the whole original story into something sweetums and innocent. they have nice songs, w/c can be sung along. every show they make is feel-good. their villains are usually fuzzy-wuzzy ppl who are evil for the sake of being evil. their stories are simple and straightforward. in short, everything they do is meant, and meant only, for children or isip-bata.

as for anime, it has a lot more depth. it's a lot more fun to watch. and their storylines are so much better, unlike the good-versus-evil i've come to expect from disney. the artwork is also better, since it's more detailed. and they really can inspire. take evangelion as an example. i mean, i don't think a 10 yr old kid can understand that whole story w/o it getting badly mangled. but there are also great anime, like totoro and kiki, which are truly meant for children, w/c can be really enjoyable, w/o having bad guys in it. and anime has so many genres... like, mahou shojo, horror, adventure... :D

I agree with you.I also wathced Miyazaki's works and to tell everyone that I left the room not finishing "Grave of the fireflies" kasi nakakiyak sya at baka di ko makontrol yung emotios ko over the story. I never recalled that disney made me shed a tear for their story.

too true. that was really one of the saddest movies i've ever watched.

peace, ppl! :)

If you're looking for eye candy- which is all show, but has no substance... well Disney films are for you, but, if you want to engage in a little intellectual masturbation, while enjoying eye popping animation- well, anime is my prescription :D

don't tell me hindi ka nanonood ng Disney cartoons while you're young. pero in fairness... Baduy na ang mga animations ng Disney ngayon ^_^

in terms of Japanese Anime... they're the hit!!!!
in this time, nobody could compare such imaginative and innovative anime than the japanese!

consider their target audience naman...

Disney targets the children kaya nga almost all their toons are fantasy that couldn't happen in real life or any parallel world, right?

while animes have a much much broader audience coz it's almost real life and almost anyone can relate to an anime character, can't you? even if it's fantasy, it's still a possibility in a different place and time ryt?

that's what gives anime the big edge over Disney, don't you think? the only problem is Disney toons are dubbed in a language most people use while anime needs to be subtitled or stupidly dubbed for most non-Japs to understand!!http://www.freakygamers.com/smilies/s2/kao/chika/chirol_natu.gif

It's not good to compare both art forms.. Disney and anime have their own good and bad points.. but if we compare... I'd prefer Anime when it comes to art... for the stories... I'd still pick Anime, but when it comes to lasting appeal.. I guess the edge goes to Disney... I mean they started it all.. the trend in cartoons... the theme parks.. etc.... Though some of their cartoons are really sub-par compared with anime.. you've got to admit that they do strike a chord in the hearts of everyone.. Ask any kid what they want to do first in the U.S. and they'd shout they want to go to Disneyland... heck even a non-disney fan would go to Disneyland just to sample the magic.. In Japan.. Disney is really huge.. Pooh's popularity there is at an all time high. I was there when they opened a new theme park called "Water World".. they timed the opening by showing some Disney classics (really old ones like Sleeping Beauty, Cinderalla, etc.) in some cinemas.. and boy were they jampacked.. Disney's marketing arm is monstrous.. when they know their product name is faltering.. they'd do some marketing gimik... re-release some old flicks.. and walah! it's magic back again..... Anime for me is an artistic masterpiece... but until it completely develops it's own unique and identifiable marketing thingy, it would still play second fiddle in the hearts of many... :)
But I'd go with Anime any time... heheh Slamdunk rules!!!!

Disney is the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to American cartoons, don't u think? it's the easiest term to describe them collectively.

Not necessarily- Disney is just the largest and mosr popular animation outfit in the US, but their animation greatly differs form the Warner Brothers 'Toons (Batman, Batman Beyond, Bugs Bunny, The Magic Sword: Quest for Camelot, The Iron Giant), Or the Hanna-Barbera characters (Superfriends, The Flintstones, etc) , not to mention Rankin Bass (makers of The Hobbit, Flight of Dragons, and the Last Unicorn).

FYI- most of the stuff shown in Cartoon Network are from Hanna-Barbera :D

BTW- of all the non-Japanese type of cartooning style- I like Genndy Tartakovsky's style (Samurai Jack, Dexter's Lab, etc)- and the Two Stupid Dogs

Disney cartoons are always adapted from someone else's story. No imagination whatsoever.

They don't even have the decency to admit that they stole the idea of their LION KING from an anime show "THE JUNGLE EMPEROR" aka KIMBA THE WHITE LION. Same story, same characters, even similar names KIMBA and SIMBA.

Pathetic.

Disney should just stick to their theme parks. They have no idea whatsoever on how to make a decent animated film.
