Yes I do... and I don't.
YES because...
1. Like you said, most of them are old are smoke belchers.
SOLUTION: Stricter implementation by the LTO and other supporting agencies of allowing what can go on the road and what cannot.
2. The jeepney drivers drive like maniacs. Most of them do not care about the safety of the other people on the road. All they care about are their next passengers.
SOLUTION: Again, stricter implementation of the government's policies.
NO because...
1. Driving is an honest job. If we phase out jeepneys, the unemployment cases will rise. If this happens, theft and robbery cases will also rise.
2. Not all Filipinos can afford to take the bus, FX or MRT.
3. Trademark ng Pilipinas ang Sarao Jeepney.

yes, i want them out of the streets.
why? coz jeepneys has been here since world war II! imagine how backward it is?!
although chiqui is right with the effects when you remove jeepneys. majority of jeepney drivers didnt finish college. the only thing they know how to make a living is drive jeeps.
maybe if we can find a substitute like fx taxi? nah, compared to jeepneys, its too small. more buses? still impossible, streets here in metro manila are so narrow that once a lane gets block traffic will build up immediately.
solution? cant think of any....

hindi. kasi part na ng culture ng pinoy ang dyip e.
what needs to be done is to educate the drivers more para maging mas responsible drivers sila. and siguro phase-out old jeepneys na sira-sira. pangit tingnan e.

replacing old jeeps for newer ones will take money.
training drivers to follow rules and regulations will take time.
whatever they want to do, the government should start now.

I think the solution is not to get rid of jeepneys. It would cripple our mass transportation system.
IMHO, what we need to do is this:
1. Create more designated jeepney stops - one reason why there is so much traffic is because jeepneys stop whenever they want to, which is when the passenger wants them to stop. If we create these jeepney stops (and if drivers follow them) then traffic flow would be better. One good example are the loading/unloading zones in front of some malls. Others could be placed in front of villages/subdivisions, and other major commercial centers.
2. Discipline the jeepney drivers. They drive for a living yes, and should follow all the corresponding rules. Stopping at red lights, not stopping when traffic is flowing, etc. Also, dispel the notion of competition among drivers. They always rush towards prospecting passengers, cutting each other off, etc. There will always be passengers who will ride the jeeps.
3. Enforce stricter regulations on the jeepneys and their drivers. Smoke belchers should be strictly banned from the streets. Licenses should be legal and current.
These are difficult solutions, but I think can be done with the proper leadership and cooperation by everyone.

kailangan din i-phase ouot mga jeepney kasi mas kailangan natin ng mass transport like more lrt/mrt lines to solve the traffic problem. kung di naman pwedeng tanggalin completely, why not regulate na lang yung quantity ng mga jeepneys na bumabiyahe. sila kasi kadalasan cause ng traffic: sa lahat ng bababaan, sa kanto pa at paminsan nangangahoy pa:mad: kaya nagta-trafiic.

yes their engines should be replaced coz ang pangit ng ginagawa nila sa agtmosphere. pero kung total eradication **** ng jeepney. wag **** coz para sa mahihirap at para sa mga walang kotse at para sa mga sira ang kotse(tulad ko), nandiyan *** upang magbigay ng transportasyon.

As for me, its better to replace jeepneys with vans (Taxi vans) I think or any other means of transportation. If not, better replace those "Bulok" machines, coz they cause pollution, air and noise pollution. Better yet train drivers to be more environment friendly and responsible.

They just have to improved. Not only the looks but on the effect on the environment aspect.
Well, let me add that when one goes to Iloilo, one of the 1st things they notice are the jeepneys. Why?
They actually dont look like the ones in Manila.
All new designs. Futuristic. Modern. Sleek. I even saw three or four that looked liked a Honda Civic. There's even a Starex model!!!
The most common design is the "Cimarron", a boxed type design with very much space for breathing. In short very open.
Of course there are still those usual looking jeepneys. :)

in the long run jeepneys have to go...
pero for now, they have to stay no!
siguro sa manila its about time that they be gone... pero in the other cities naman maliliit lang streets so super impractical na may bius di ba? =)
kung properly maintained naman jeepneys less lang naman impact nila environment e.

If they continue to disregard the loading-unloading zones, then they have to go.

I don't really know where I can put myself into.
YES because
Number one, jeepneys are a dead-end technology, meaning no further technological advances can be given into it so the supposed "Philippine pride" is really for me more of a shame.
Number two, the engines are old, second hand, whatever. They exhaust too much smoke into the air.
Number three: the drivers don't seem to care squab about their passengers.
NO because
Number one: Well, remove the jeepneys and you make life hell for about a hundred or so thousand commuters. Most of which can't afford the more expensive means of transportation.
Kahit isang reason lang yung NO, medyo mabigat pa rin yun eh.

What?? Ano ka, hilo? Taking away the jeepneys from Manila is like taking away the cable cars from San Francisco, or taking away the double decker buses from London. They are more than just modes of transportation, they are symbols of the city.

No, but there has to be stricter rules with regards to their loading and unloading of passengers. Also they don't follow traffic rules, resorting to paying tong instead. What we need is not to abolish this very important mode of transportation for most of us but to instead let its drivers take a crash course on proper road rules. Honest, upright traffic enforcers are also needed. Idealistic maybe but achievable. If only the traffic enforcers were more honest and authoritative....

yes BIG TIME!
well, maybe the drivers..they need to go school before they can drive with discipline & the whole nine yards.....
it has been a part of our culture & mahirap tanggalin...practical din kasi eh...

I think we should get rid of jeepneys. people should walk more. i noticed that filipinos here are so lazy. like they want the jeep to drop them off right in front of their shack pa.
i mean, in the states, people walk to the bus stop naman ah. they don't make the bus go right in front of their house.
that is why filipinos don't succeed.
