I'm a Fil-Am studying here in Manila. At the end of the month I finish my first year studying here and go back to the US for the summer.
I want to get some gifts/momentos for some close friends that have a distinct Filipino Character. I don't want to just get them T-shirts. I already have some woven handbags from Baguio for some of my female friends.
Any suggestions as to other gifts? BTW, I want something long lasting, so things other than food. I'm already bringing some jars of lengua with me.

Hi Raf. I just got back from a 3 month vacation there and the most popular pasalubongs with a Filipino touch that was a hit with my friends and family were the SARONGS ( the colorful rectangle pieces of died cloth with tropical/sea/fishies print you can use as a wrap around skirt or sitting mat at the beach...very tropical look). I bought them for a cheap 150 pesos each at Puerto Galera. In Manila at Shoppesville in Greenhills they were selling for 300 pesos each.
They also liked the Filipino Asian editions of popular magazines I bought them like Cosmo, Mega, Good Housekeeping, People, Yes. The girls liked looking at Filipino makeup style, models, actors and print media 'cause not everybody wants to or can afford to subscribe to that ABS CBN Filipino Channel sattelite dish thingie here so they enjoyed looking at those magz I bought them.
Hope your friends and fam like your pasalubongs :D
Good Luck!

- philippine made sandals
- magazines (i loved the one this pexer sent me once.) it was FHM phil. she wanted me to know who joyce something was. if possible maybe some local porn.
- i recently discovered pinoy music. parokya ni edgar cracks me up.
- pirated stuff. tons of them. if possible.
- butterfly knife would be nice.
- local art. anything from paintings, carvings, etc...
piece of advice if you really are fil-am (born and raised in north america) don't listen to cali4nia cause i know your other fil-am friends are going to hate any pinoy media based products. why the heck should we care?! we don't know anything about them. the mags are fine as long as it involves women in bikinis, thongs, etc... and like i said porn would be nice. i've never read nor saw one before so there. :D
