Lea Salonga in what could be this year's theatrical event, Proof -- directed by Bobby Garcia, staged by Atlantis Productions -- showing at the GSIS from Jan. 9 to 27.
Bobby Garcia is of course known for Rent, Miss Saigon (Manila), and Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
“Proof” supposedly is now the biggest hit drama on Broadway and has already won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play. (Ms. Lea Salonga Web Site)
Lea Salonga appears as Catherine -- a young woman who fears she might have inherited her father's dementia, besides his mathematical genius. Also in the cast are Michael de Mesa, Joel Trinidad, and Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo. (MTV Asia)
Is anybody planning on watching it? Your thoughts, anyone?

Basta any play with Lea in it, I would definitely watch :) So far, I was able to watch her sa "They're Playing Our Song" lang. Galing nila ni Adrian Pang. No such luck in "Miss Saigon". Also, I think GSIS is a good venue, maliit lang yung theater so kahit na yung pinakamalayong seat is still quite near. Don din venue nung "Rent". I expect to be really entertained with "Proof". Nood din kayo :)

The original staging of "Rent" was at the Music Museum, and yes, any play with Bobby Garcia or Lea Salonga to me is worth watching. "They're Playing Our Song" was a nice prelude, but "Miss Saigon" was, indeed, a rare treat one was lucky enough to watch.
Thanks for the ticket prices. Now all I need is to find someone to watch it with.

Hi raven23!
I wasn't able to watch it in Music Museum (back in 1998 ata). And I made sure I'd see it when I heard it was going to be staged again in GSIS.
Well, very light lang naman yung "They're Playing Our Song" e. Syempre it can't really be compared to "Miss Saigon". And you're right, even with Ces playing Kim, I really enjoyed it. Ganda! I know I would have felt more goosebumps if it were Lea, though ;)
No problem with the ticket prices *okay* You better hurry and buy one now if you want to get good seats. Medyo taken na yung most of the good seats the last time I checked (Jan 5 pa yun).
Btw, would you happen to be the same raven23 from FN? :hmm:

GSIS theatre is an ok venue, but I like the 'coziness' of Music Museum better, I think.
GSIS theatre was where they also staged Jesus Christ Superstar -- another play I just had to watch -- if only for Wolfgang.
Enihu, I'm still looking for someone to watch with. :shrug2:

Hi pinbox!
Hmm, yung Single White Female is yung inaagaw ni Jennifer yung identity ni Bridget (Fonda). She has some sort of mental disorder because of the guilt she felt when her twin sis died when they were young. Basta suspense sya :)
She played a role in Proof? Talaga? When?
Sa 17th yung tickets namin ;) Nood ka rin?

we saw it last friday (jan 11) and i was surprised the theater was almost full (almost same number of people in Rent 2001 which was also staged in GSIS)! maybe it was because people know that lea will be in it and it's been a long time since she's done a straight dramatic play.
this is good in a sense that the local theater industry is gaining popularity (i.e. the KC phenomenon in "Little Mermaid". we saw it the year before and it wasn't that much hyped. oh well) but somehow frustrating that the people are more interested in seeing the actors than finding and enjoying what the play was all about.
anyway, when we got there, bobby, lea's mom and i assume her new boyfriend were talking in the lounge undisturbed (hey, i almost jumped into bobby but i guess i still want to see the play and i don't want to be kicked out so i tried to behave). of course i'm happy for the guy because the play is obviously a success already with the number of people who came.
the theater, though, was a little hot. which is not really a good thing. to prevent the "Rent" fiasco last time where the people were asked to leave the auditorium when some of them were texting to the max as the play was going on, someone announced (or begged) for everyone to turn off their phones. i was surprised to hear only ONE (and i was really trying to stop myself from kicking her) texting during the play. a vast improvement.
going to the play.
nice props.
lea is a gem. she's really getting better and better. although in some parts you'd wish she'll suddenly burst into a song. hehe and her english is very good. you could say that speaking it is second nature to her.
hal. i loved the guy! good english, too. he really stood out! and he really played "alongside" lea. he know that he's working with a star and he showed that he could equal her performance.
menchu, well. quite on the technical side of acting. her actions are a little animated and maginified when compared to lea, like the hand gestures and facial expressions but she's very good, too!
michael de mesa. lemme see. there were some scenes where i felt uneasy watching him. it's like he's speaking english-tagalog. you know, the other three really sounded like they were born and grew up in the states and he somehow falters with his english. and i think he didn't convince me that he's ill and he's that old. nevertheless, he was quite good, too.
i was kind of forced to watch this play but i'm glad i did watch it. the play is really well-written and once again, bobby didn't disappoint me. what can i say? i love the guy!
the audience. i hope next time, we'll be a little lucky. it's always better to have few people in but with a sense of humor than a handful with bored looks and completely lost.

hi chinkybubbles!
totally terrific play
ben_air
you're absolutely right. the theater was a bit warm. however, surprisingly, no one was texting naman. (unlike nung rent when this girl's phone went off in an ascending tone tapos ang lakas pa ng volume level...kainis!).
lea...was lea. wonderful performance. *okay*
joel trinidad was totally cool...
you're right too with michael de mesa. he didn't seem sick but then crazy people never look it naman. :insane:
menchu was wonderful too. totally the kind of character i'd expect from a new yorker who has to deal with that kind of family situation :glitter:
definitely worth my money

Jan 18, 2002, 04:59 AM
saw the play last night. i enjoyed it, even with the mathematical references (grabe, it brought back high school memories :teehee: )
I liked Lea , Joel Trinidad , and Menchu's performance *okay* I think they were really into their roles. kakatawa talaga si Menchu: "Hohoba!"
Si Michael de Mesa okay din sa second act. Sa first act I felt that he was speaking in a scripted manner, unlike his portrayal of Tom Collins in Rent 2001. He was so natural there! But his acting in the second act was better, mejo naluha pa ako sa crazy scene niya.
It's a nice play, though not one I'd watch again and again. I still prefer musicals, but this one's a nice change of pace :D

Haay, I really can't understand the manners of some people. Parang ano ba naman yung iturn off nila for just a couple of hours. When we watched, meron pang malakas ng message alert tone no! Grrr... :grrr:

I totally agree with your comments on the actors, esp with this one. You can really detect the hesitation or the lapse in diction in Michael's lines no? He was much, much better in Rent. Tsaka yun nga, parang I think he could have done better.
the audience. i hope next time, we'll be a little lucky. it's always better to have few people in but with a sense of humor than a handful with bored looks and completely lost.
Sinabi mo pa! *okay*
There was this one guy behind us, who kept on clearing his throat, nde ko na marinig yung sinasabi! Tapos, may mga side comments pa sya like 'Corny!' Kakainis!
Overall, think it's quite good. Galing yung story. Pero, medyo disappointed ako. I don't know, siguro parang I was expecting something more. Can't point out what exactly. Pero I just feel that bitin or may kulang.

Hi guys! I'm working in Proof as a crew member right now, and man, I'll bet the cast would love to see this thread, especially Joel. :glee:
I like how Lea keeps her role fresh by trying out something new with her lines. Menchu and Joel's chemistry with Lea both onstage and off are really great. Mike, well, yeah, he sounds like he's speaking in a scripted manner, and I guess he's sounds "too rehearsed". But all in all, I say that the play was pretty good.

Been wanting to watch this but it's far. :( Oh well. A lot of people say it's good - I was wondering at first how a play about math stuff (proof! urgh! ) can be interesting. I used to really hate proving during college (those Ma18 teachers kasi!).
