... oh please let me know 'cause I'm new here.

I'm 19 and I'd like to meet up with people around my age to hang-out with while I'm here. I've only been in Houston for a week, and it's been terribly boring. I need excitement in my life! Argh. It kinda sucks to be transplanted in another country right in the middle of the school year, you know! I smell a whole new adjustment coming up... oh boy.

This ain't my first time in the U.S. though. Before college, I was over at the Bay Area, CA. Now I've moved in with my mum here in Texas.

By the way, I live around the Hobby Aiport area, in case you're all wondering. I'd really appreciate it if you'd drop a line! Later all.

Hello Texan Pinoys! You guys and girls out there don't have a thread so I started one for ya'll. Oops wait...thanks to KD moderator I found your threads...yeehaw!

I'm from Glendale, Cali, 24 female, ready to leave this boring sleepy city behind and about to graduate from college in a year and thinkin' of relocating to a livable city with a much lower cost of living than LA and an abundance of stable jobs. I got Chicago info from some helpful pexers here already but I think it's the same COL in Chicago as is here in LA....so...kaya...

I would LOVE to hear more about TEXAS, in particular, the Houston area. Kahit anong texas town ka pls share some info.

-What parts of Houston are there many Asians/Pinoys? Pinoy groceries/restos?

-In apartments.com there is this info about Houston and the vicinity and can you tell me where it's safe for a single female like me to live and find an AFFORDABLE apartment, close to groceries and malls, etc., and can you give me some 411 on these areas and what they're like:
Inner Loop
Northeast
Northwest
South/Southwest
Southeast
West/Southwest
http://apartments.com/maps/RG0006.gif

-Is Texas similar to Cali in terms of transportation...would I need a CAR? Is there freeway gridlock during rush hour traffic times? Road Rage?

-How's the racial demographic? Are street gangs a problem? Discrimination towards Asians rampant?

-Are there a good supply of jobs? I'm not in the healthcare field(Office/Marketing/Business) is my edu background and thinkin' of getting a teaching credential, as well.

-Is there a CFC Singles For Christ catholic christian chapter there?

-What is the major airport there?

-Has anyone driven from LA to Texas before?

-How's the weather in TEXAS? Is it dry, aarid weather? How's your 4 Seasons?

-How's the cost of groceries?

-How's the real estate/aparments market? Median range of really ugly crampy old houses here in LA/Orange Cty. are around $300,000.

-How are the people in Texas? Perky or Jaded City Folk?

-What's to do there? Beach, amusement parks, nature/national parks, etc?

-How far is Plano, TX from Houston? Kasi that's where many company headquarters are based and I'm interested in getting a job with these guys. Penny's and Frito Lay are in Plano if I'm not mistaken.

I dunno...what else. Uhhm. Just any other helpful info would be greatly appreciated.

By the way I've been doing research and for this year's Employment Review magazine and CNN Money's Best, they rank either Houston or Chicago as the most livable cities in the nation...that's why ang kulit kulit ko magtanong about these cities.

Thanks for putting up with me.

Thanks! Thanks!

Southwest/southside is where Chinatown is at. Lots of Flips in the Sugarland/Missouri City Area. There's a strip of Filipino-owned businesses along Bissonett and another one around Holcombe in the Inner Loop (particularly in the Medical Center)

Inner Loop
Northeast
Northwest
South/Southwest
Southeast
West/Southwest
http://apartments.com/maps/RG0006.gif

Inner Loop (around downtown/Medical Center)
Medical Center: Pretty expensive but well-manicured apartments to choose from. Single bedroom costing as much as $800/month. It is relatively safe and classy because it's within the vicinity of West U which is a rich people's neighborhood. Nearest mall there is Rice Village. It's ambiance is kinda like Alabang Town Center back in Manila. Lots of students also in the area because it's where Rice University and St. Thomas University is located.

Downtown: Some areas are nice, some aren't. You just have to choose wisely. Lots of clubs around the area and there's the Bayou Place around the Theatre District where you can shop, and dine. Kinda tourist-y sometimes but it's ok. Hermann Park, an accessible greener alternative to malls, is just around the vicinity, it's where the zoo is also housed.

South/Southwest (Sugarland, Missouri City and Stafford)
Lots of Pinoys and Asians in general. Includes the East Asians too like Pakistanis and Indians. More houses than apartments. Nice neighborhoods, and nice malls like First Colony. Has this homey non-metropolitan feel to it. Everything is so clean and organized.

West (Galleria/Uptown)
Another part of town full of rich people. Nice houses, expensive apartemnts but well worth it because it's int he middle of everything. Upscale malls like the famous Galleria and West Oaks just around the corner. Lots of clubs, active nightlife, great to drive around after dark because of the lights, especially around the Holidays. Not much Filipinos/Asians live here but they just go here mainly to hang out.

Southeast (Hobby Airport, Pearland, Pasadena, Friendswood)
This is where I'm at--near the airport. Lots of apartments around here. Not that expensive, but choose the area well because some parts are ghetto. The place around Hobby Airport is nice, quiet and well tended with rent just around $600. Lots of resturants around here and malls like Pasadena Town Square, Almeda Mall and Baybrook Mall which is pretty large and upscale. Not a lot of Asians, just lots of Hispanic people, but they're friendly, no discrimination of whatsoever.

Anywhere North
Haven't been around this area yet but I heard there's a lot of Vietnamese people. Great places to shop include Katy Mills and Willowbrook on the northeast side and Deerbrook Mall on the northwest side.

-Is Texas similar to Cali in terms of transportation...would I need a CAR? Is there freeway gridlock during rush hour traffic times? Road Rage?

You'll definitely NEED a car. Not hard to find one because there's a LOT of dealerships everywhere. It takes at least 40 minutes to get anywhere here with or without traffic! Buses are reliable but slow. Once it took me 2 hours just to get from Hobby Airport to the Galleria area! Gosh! If you hate traffic, take the Beltway 8 which is located in the outer loop (inner loop is the 610), but you gotta pay toll tho' around 25 cents - $2 max. Traffic ain't that bad in general, but in the Westside, it gets bad especially around late afternoons and early evenings where people are hurrying to go to the Galleria area to party. Speed limit was recently lowered from 70 to 55... argh!

Part 2

-How's the racial demographic? Are street gangs a problem? Discrimination towards Asians rampant?

There are gangs, Hispanic and Black gangs mostly but there're not a problem. Asians are very well accepted everywhere and there's no stereotyping except in some really remote parts in Houston. Rice boys are everywhere, especially in the west and southwest, but not as rampant as in California.

-Are there a good supply of jobs? I'm not in the healthcare field(Office/Marketing/Business) is my edu background and thinkin' of getting a teaching credential, as well.

Jobs are okay, but there are more openings for educators and anything to do in the medical field.

-Is there a CFC Singles For Christ catholic christian chapter there?

Yeah, I think so but I am not sure since I'm Protestant.

-What is the major airport there?

George Bush International which is located up north. If you want to get to downtown faster, get off at the smaller airport Hobby on the southeast side.

-Has anyone driven from LA to Texas before?

Yeah, I know some who has. Took them three days.

-How's the weather in TEXAS? Is it dry, aarid weather? How's your 4 Seasons?

Summer is hot, like Pinas-hot--only not as humid. Fall is kinda wet, winters are the best because they're mild and crisp averaging 50 degrees. Spring is sunny but not hot.

-How's the cost of groceries?

Not that expensive. $25 will suffice for a single person in a week provided that you eat at home twice a day.

KiTTY2babe
May 1, 2002, 09:36 PM
Part 3

-How's the real estate/aparments market? Median range of really ugly crampy old houses here in LA/Orange Cty. are around $300,000.

You can get a REALLY nice two-three bedroom and two-bath home in a quiet classy neighborhood in the south/southwest area for around $150-$200. Rule of the thumb: The closer you get to downtown, the pricier real estate gets.

-How are the people in Texas? Perky or Jaded City Folk?

PERKY PERKY! Everyone's always saying "How ya'll doin?" everywhere, from the malls, the the bus stops, even in the streets. People sometimes wave at you even from cars.

-What's to do there? Beach, amusement parks, nature/national parks, etc?

To start with there's a Six Flags Astroworld and Waterpark located near the Inner loop. Then there's Hermann Memorial Park and Zoo downtown, Space Center is just down south near Friendswood, and Galveston beach just an hour away south from Houston.

-How far is Plano, TX from Houston? Kasi that's where many company headquarters are based and I'm interested in getting a job with these guys. Penny's and Frito Lay are in Plano if I'm not mistaken.

Umm, I'm guessing around four hours away.

By the way I've been doing research and for this year's Employment Review magazine and CNN Money's Best, they rank either Houston or Chicago as the most livable cities in the nation...that's why ang kulit kulit ko magtanong about these cities.

Thanks for putting up with me.

hi there! im from Houston myself (in the TexMed area) but given the choice, i would pick College Station over Houston :D
College Station is a university town (home of Texas A&M) and its so much more prettier than Houston...

people there are real nice - its a predominantly white population but lots (and i mean LOTS) of Asians attend A&M kaya you'll never feel lost there...

traffic is not that bad, its a small town and people give way to each other... ang dami nga don na naka-bike lang, the streets are THAT safe

im not so sure bout the real estate but im pretty certain that the prices are quite reasonable - they have students in mind kaya nde naman nila pwede masyado taasan... there are lots of small subdivisions in the area and in the nearby city of Bryan. George Bush the Elder lives in Bryan and occasionally rubs elbows with the 'mortals'...

and since its a university town there are lots of places to go to. lots of bars and some medium-sized malls... and they have my fave place Freebirds World Burritos :D i saw a Filipino-Thai restaurant in the middle of A&M, im sure they have more (mostly Jap and Chinese stuff) because of the Asian population...

:) College Station is about 5 hours away from Plano, compared to Houston which is like 6-7 hours away :D

a caveat though - if you have allergies you cannot live in College Station - they have like all those hills covered with wildflowers, so if you have an allergic reaction to pollen... its the 2nd worst city in the US for people with allergies

i will try to post more info about College Station, hehe, i haven't been there often enough to be that familiar with the town, but its really gorgeous :D

Kitty2babe one more quick question if I may.

In light of the devastating hurricanes that happened in those areas this week, do hurricane storms/tornados or floods occur in Houston?

As you know LA has earthquakes...am used to it though.

KiTTY2babe
May 4, 2002, 07:03 PM
muggle: Yes, Houston is a very nice and homey yet it takes time to get used to because of it's size. Unlike other cities like LA and NY where everything is so compact and within reach, Houston's is very spread out. You honestly spend more time driving than being at the destination itself so to speak. But nonetheless, the drive is always worth it.

Cali4Nia: Unlike in California where there are tremors all the time, hurricanes don't come by that often. Sure we do have our share of sucky wet weather but it's not that bad. You'll even be glad it rained because it's usually sunny and warm. :D The last major flooding that happened here was when Huricane Allison hit in the summer of last year. Hm, I'm not quite sure what happened because I was in Manila that time, But I saw pictures and most of the freeways were submerged!
