My name is Geoff Chua. I was one of the earlier PExers but I took a leave of about two years from PExing. :)

I graduated from Uno in 1994. I took up Management Engineering at the Ateneo and graduated in 1998. I worked for two years in the industry. Then, in 2000, I started my masters in UP and also started teaching in Ateneo.

Some teachers we had in Uno who are still there are Mrs. Pascua, and Ms. Jao. God, I feel ancient. :(

melie, it's ok.

Ok naman ang ME. It's a highly quantitative (i.e. mathematical) management course. Basically, it's math applied to management.

Consequently, students need to take several math, economic, and management units. The program is very demanding and a good number of the good students in hs end up in ME. So aside from the difficult requirements, you also get to interact with brilliant classmates. Thus, you can expect good training.

Right now, I teach for the Department of Quantitative Methods and Information Technology (QMIT) of the School of Management (SOM). Subjects I teach are Operations Research, Computer Programming, and Statistics.

Btw, are you still in hs or college? What course are you in or plan to take? The ACET results are out since this morning. I wonder how many UNO students passed?

im a graduating hs student. hehehe im still thinking of what course i should take. i passed both admu and dlsu, and i love my courses in both schools. :(
is ME better than AE-BSA (economics and accounting)? :)

If ME is management and math, LM is management and law, while MAC is management and chemistry.

By demanding, I mean you cannot get away with just an excellent history. Being a hs valedictorian doesn't guarantee excellence in college. You have to continuously study hard and prove yourself. The course standards are intentionally set at higher levels than those in other programs.

LM provides students with a sufficient background on the legal aspects of management aside from the main functions of management, namely, operations, marketing, finance, and HR. It can also serve as a pre-law course.

MAC is a relatively new management course geared towards production. Understand that most production processes will require some chemistry. It is not as theoretical as a chemistry or chemical engineering course but it offers more applications, as well as management skills to market your products.

Among the three, ME is considered the hardest and most prestigious but the other two are slowly gaining recognition. In choosing a program, it still boils down to what your individual interests are.

melie, i get to teach about 60 to 70 percent of ME students at least once in their four years in ateneo. I teach them either in their second or third year. as for ME vs AE-BSA, i cannot give an objective comparison as i am not familiar with the latter's curriculum and reputation. i wish you luck in deciding where to study.

indigo24, catcher, are you also considering ateneo? are lm and mac your accepted programs?

anyway, the classmate i was referring to is from cksc and is currently taking ece in ateneo. i met him a couple of times on campus. about your ME batchmates, I haven't taught any first-year MEs yet. My earliest chance is this summer when they take up computer programming.

ok naman ang pagtuturo. masaya naman. twice a week ako sa ateneo at ganun din sa ACTS. sa UP naman, masters pa lang ang kinukuha ko. :) nasa thesis na ako. :cool:

anong balita sa yo? dalaw ka naman sa ACTS. :D

i guess these are things you have to think about at this crossroad of your life. please understand that i'm not discouraging you from going to ateneo. i'm just serving as devil's advocate (pardon the allusion) and i want you to see the other side of the fence. this may be one tough ponder, but this is the only way you can come out more certain of yourself and of your decisions.

yeah. i'm quite decided on going to ateneo. hmm... the only alternative i had planned to take is going to lasalle. i've thought about it and i realized that i'd like admu more than dlsu. hehehe my argument in lasalle's favor is a little weak. argh. i must admit that what first attracted me to lasalle is its big swimming pool. :p how mundane. i can't even swim, for crying out loud.
i prefer ateneo because i'm more used to the place than i am to lasalle, among other things. i can't really explain. :shrug2:

it could. what i want in life is always subject to change. it's not a matter of whether what i choose will fit what i will want in the future. i think it's a matter of adapting to what the future holds.
if i choose one college, i wouldn't exactly know if i'll have a better future or a better time if i choose the other. ae-bsa could be the right course for me; if that is so and i did take me, then i'll just have to deal with the consequences of my decision and turn them to my advantage.

Yup, I'm considering going into Ateneo; however, just like melie before, I'm having second thoughts because I really like my course in DLSU which is economics and marketing. I like my course in La Salle, but I think Ateneo is a better school. Hehe! Anyway, what are the job opportunities for MAC graduates? Is it true that since MAC is a hybrid (tama ba?) course, the students in managament and chemistry will be better than me? I mean, they would know more about chem and mgt, like I would just be in the middle or something, not really excellent in both. I sincerely hope you are not getting tired of our relentless questioning, GAC!

I've taught some programming courses (although more management-geared) for ME students during summer, and the most common comment is the need for a longer period to learn programming and to do their projects. So i can understand how difficult it is to do a machine problem in a span of less than four months. Anyway, good luck. May tiwala ako sa iyo. I know you can do it.

Wala kaming machine problems. Projects ang pinapagawa ko, gaya ng inventory, accounting, database, at payroll programs -- more management-related as i've said. For ME, I believe these requirements are more practical.

p.s. galing lang akong ACTS kanina. nagturo ako ng geom. :cool: hehe. dalaw ka!!!

well, i guess you're right. When i graduated hs, i also didn't know what i wanted back then. I regret not having done enough thinking and research. But still, I have no regrets going to ateneo and taking ME.

ateneo, for me, epitomizes the "university". I don't know if this is still the way people define it, but a university is supposed to instill in her students the core principles of humanities and liberal arts (which includes philosophy, theology, history, among others) on top of whatever technical skills they need. If the latter is what you only need, then might as well go to a vocational school. It really pisses me off when people criticize the fact that half of all ateneo curricula is made up of what we call the core curriculum, and only half is left for the "more important" technical skills. Still, it depends on the student. some are content with learning the techniques that can get them through life while others feel the need for a more holistic formation. I guess you will find out for yourself what you really want when next school year comes. good luck.

p.s. ME is tough and at times overrated, but i can testify that the training is superior.

programs (ME, LM, MAC, et al) in the ateneo are classified under two math tracks. The first track requires math 11 (college algebra) and one of math 12 (topics in finite mathematics), math 19, 20 (both calculus, but for different concentrations like economics, biology, management) depending on the program requirements. The second track requires math 18 (pre-calculus), math 21, 22 (calculus) and a few others as required by the program. LM and MAC fall under the first track while ME belong to the second. Therefore, LM students take only at most two math subjects. However, they also have to deal with quantitative management subjects like statistics, accounting, and finance.

as for LM's reputation, it is considered a semi-honors program and it has quite a number of outstanding alumni. Although LM studes are not as well-versed as ME studes in math, they definitely know more about the law than anyone else with the exception of Political Science majors.

i understand your reservations regarding MAC. Indeed, it is a hybrid program and you probably will not learn as much as both management and chemistry majors in their respective fields. But then, your advantage is sufficient exposure to both. Unless you want to be a pure chemist, you will definitely appreciate learning some management skills to match your knowledge of chemical applications. Likewise, the management program provides you with management theories without specific focus on any industry.

Then again, MAC is not as prestigious as ME, BMH (business management-honors), or PsCE (physics-computer engineering) and is not a semi-honors program like LM. This is largely because it's relatively new. However, in its short history, it has produced a number of good graduates and it's gaining popularity fast.

yes, i did fill in for one or two of the math sessions when R.P. couldn't make it. There are quite a number of you and i can't tell which one. Anyway, i hope we were of help.

We already learned about the ACET and LaSalle Exam (chic_188, how do you call it?) results and we are very disappointed. For one, R.P. is devastated he almost wants us to overhaul our program. I wish next year will be better. Btw, how did you fare? What improvements do you suggest? What do your friends say?

GAC: Ganun din nga exactly yun problem naming lahat: kulang sa time.. and the problem is one month lang per mp. 2 mps in a term which is less than 4 months... this term lima mps namin... hindi 'to exag ah... totoo talaga 'to.... hay 3 and a half months yan ah... siguro yun 3 mp mga 1500 lines.... yun 2, baka 1000 lines lang. Nabalitaan mo ba na gagawing 4 terms per year na ang dlsu( as in 4 na beses magbabayad and 1 month lang yun summer vacation namin). Imagine mo na matutuloy yun. May kakilala ako na baka lumipat sa Ateneo kapag natuloy yun 4 terms per year. Dumalaw ako sa acts nung thurs. at nakita ko si sir Robert...la ka nga doon eh...

yes, the description of the MAC program may not seem too enticing but realize that for all ateneo programs, half of the curriculum is basically the same (the core curriculum). If this half (refer to my reply to melie) appeals strongly to you, then it's something to consider.

also, you might end up liking the MAC program afterall. and if you don't, there's always the opportunity to shift programs. You just have to inquire about the shifting requirements.

finally, ask about your accepted program in the other universities. gather as much info as you can, and make a serious evaluation. i know it's hard, but i think you owe it to yourself. good luck.

as for the mps, it's not really the length of the program that makes it difficult, i think. It's how you formulate the algorithm. it's how you analyze the whole problem, reduce it to subtasks, then how to deal with each subtask and finally connect all the subtasks. Above all, it's the suddenness of the how new topics are introduced that shocks the students and much time is wasted recovering from this subconscious shock. well, enough of the psychoanalysis. :)

p.s. wala pala ako pag thursdays. sorry. my sched in ACTS is tuesday and friday afternoons, just in case. :)

personally, i believe PsCE is slightly harder but ME is slightly more prestigious. i don't know how you define "better". :)

GAC: "better" in this case is better in everything. :) hmm... let me rephrase-- bias aside, if you were the one choosing between the two courses, which one will you go for? actually, this isnt my concern. one of my friends got second thoughts about his course (PsCE) and started thinking of switching courses because the math is "tougher" in PsCE (i think its because of a higher grade requirement?). i just got curious as to which course is better. anyway, the shrewd in me tried to win him over to ME (what a better way to have a potential batchmate!) since i dont know anyone taking the same course. hahaha

sorry i took quite a while to reply. i wanted to verify (although still without perfect certainty) certain matters regarding PsCE.

first, i don't think any course can be "better" or "best" in everything. certainly, there are benefits derived exclusively from one course.

second, i remember having PsCE classmates in most of my math classes. i don't think PsCE has more math than ME. i think math in ME is about the same, if not more than PsCE. you might want to confirm this when you finally go to ateneo.

third, let me explain what i mean by PsCE being more hard-core. both ME and PsCE take a lot of math to prepare the students for applications in their respective fields. remember that math is the queen/mother of all sciences. and PsCE is a natural science (dealing with the natural laws of physics) and ME is management science (Incidentally, the counterpart of ME among US programs IS management science). although students in both courses apply math theories, applications in natural sciences ought to be more "hard-core" or "pure" in theory. i find difficulty in explaining this part. pardon me and i hope you get at least an idea of what i'm saying.

as far as i know, ME has more math than PsCE. Almost all math subjects in PsCE are also taken in ME. As far as difficulty level is concerned, there is screening in the ME program, i.e. there is a minimum requirement for the average grade in major subjects. I understand that this is non-existent in PsCE, which makes ME harder in this sense. The hard part about PsCE, though, is or are the many physics subjects that you have to take. Therefore, those very interested in physics will definitely love this program.

p.s. information above are still subject to confirmation. try to gather more info from the web, other acquaintances, or directly from ateneo when you get to visit.

Talagang may bayad.Dalawa pala games bukas(or am I mistaken?Si Minty ang nakakaalam.)-- yung aspirants na championship(game 2) vs. St. Stephen and yung HS team vs. Xavier.Siguro naman hindi tayo bokya sa both games.

Nikster patalo daw yung game last Saturday.Pinalaro yung mga benchplayers.No big deal yung loss coz pasok na rin naman tayo sa finals.Medyo nakakawalang-gana manood coz I know talo tayo.Pero pwedeng pagbigyan tayo ng Xavier para humaba yung series.Sana may X Squad bukas.Lagi silang nakakatuwa.
