hello, meron ba work opportunity sa Davao? I am currently working here in Jeddah Saudi Arabia... gusto ko na bumalik sa Pinas...

Instead of applying for immigration, I would still prefer Philippines, but ayoko na sa Manila. (I am from Antipolo City nga pala)

Hello Everyone! I lived in US the last 25 yrs. Before that I've only lived in Baguio and Pangasinan, Northern Luzon. I've never been to Davao City. But reading about Davao city makes me want to travel there. I aslo hardly know Manila at all. I am 47 M and plan to travel alone. When I say alone I mean by myself. I do have cousins in Pangasinan but they have families, and I don't want to take them away from their families. I don't want to be responisble for anyone incase things don't go the way I plan. I do have my own family I want to come home to after my stay. I speak Tagalog fairly well. I speak English without a Filipino accent (so they say). I could also speak fluent Pangasinan and Ilocano. Any suggestions or advice or anything you could tell me about Davao City is appreciated. I plan to stay less than a week in Davao alone, then most of my months stay will be in Manila, Pangasinan, Baguio and Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. Could someone tell me something about Buhangin, Davao City? Thank you!

hey uncle louie!!!

my family lives in buhangin (i separated and now live in bangkal, dc)....buhangin is one of the towns of davao...most of what u see here are just small shops and subdivisions...but city proper is just a ride away...

hmmm..i don't know what else i can describe about buhangin...but with davao as a whole..it is great...and the most livable city i know...less traffic jam...nice people...credible mayor...clean water...clean air...beautiful beaches...and a lot more...hehehe..hope u can come here...

Uncle Louie
Jun 16, 2006, 12:30 PM
Mei, thanks for sharing! Davao sounds like a great place. Plane fare from Manila seems very reasonable, too. Why is the town called Buhangin? Is it near the ocean or the beach?
I was planning on visiting this August if things go as planned.
So far things are not going my way. My cousin in Pangasinan just got burried last week. Then I just heard tonight that my Aunt had a stroke this week and is not doing well. If my aunt doesn't get well I might have to take an early emergency leave. Then, the visit to Davao is going to have to wait for another time in the future.
By the way, why is your location "Parker Republic"? And could you elaborate on "a lot more".

mei_kilan
Jun 16, 2006, 01:54 PM
hehehe..

hi again Uncle Louie..i'm sorry for your situation...i will pray for ur cousin and ur aunt...

u have quite a lot of questions..huh...hehehe..first, why buhangin?got no idea..hehehe..i didn't grew up there..well i didn't grew up in any town, because we jump from one place to another...

why parker republic?i'm a fan of sandara park..and we have this online fan community called Parkers...that's why...

Lot more?hehehe..we have great outdoors angd hang-out places here...and its safe to roam around the city 24 hours...beautiful women...hehehe.............uhmm..i think that's it for now....

Uncle Louie
Jun 17, 2006, 01:02 AM
Thanks for the prayers Mei...
Any info about about Davao is appreciated, doesn't have to be just Buhangin. Any recommendations on nice hotels there with easy airport access. Safe to roam 24 hrs? Is the city awake 24 hrs? Beautiful women! Hmmmm... I already knew that ;)

mei_kilan
Jun 17, 2006, 09:46 PM
hehehe...uncle louie:wave:

yep its safe to roam 24 hrs....no one will harm u here...or else they will be punished by the mayor..hehehe...

uhm..easy airport access hotel?try grand regal hotel, my father used to work there...but the hotel i can recommend for good service and amenities..but not quite famous is orange grove hotel, it is also near the airport...but its quite small...if u want big hotels...we only have one 5 star hotel here..it's MARCO POLO, quite far from the airport but it's in the heart of the city...i think its great..but i'm not quite sure with service...my boss used to stay there and she didn't like the service at all....hehehe..uhm...u can also stay at apo view hotel, it's more than 50 years old...but its well-known...took its name from mt. apo..highest peak in the philippines...:D

if ur in to some shopping, we have sm city davao here...but quite far from downtown area...we also have nccc mall, the newest mall...on the north part of the city...airport is at the south...if u want easy access, u can go to gaisano mall..one of the busiest malls in davao...

if u want to take a dive...you can go to samal...you'll find a lot of beaches there...pearl fam, paradise, isla reta (talikud island)..but if you don't want to go to another island, we also have some beaches on the far north of the city...in TORIL, we have mergrande, dumoy, and a lot more...

hmmm..if u want to eat...you can go at torres st., we have a number of restaurants there...u can try my aunt's restaurant, "verdebarr", mostly italian cuisine...we also have harana, nanay bebeng's...and more...

hmmm....what else?night life?hehee..u can go at venue compound...or at mts...or at rizal promenade..or at autoshop...hehehe..

what else????uh..u can ask me anything ok?and i'll give u details...hehehe..and if u want i'll show u pictures if i have..ok?

have a great day uncle louie...

Wow, I asked and I received, :) Thank you very much for the info Mei. Davao, indeed sounds like a very nice place to visit or live in for that matter. Yes I did read, they call your mayor "The Punisher of Davao", or something like that. I wasn't sure what to think of it at first, but sounds like he likes to keep the peace and order in his city, which is good. If I do get the chance to visit as initially planned, I will definitely check out your aunts Italian food... yummy, and all the other great places you mentioned. I'm not super picky about hotels, but if I'm paying for the stay, I like friendly service, and clean and comfortable rooms. I prefer friendly, happy people that make me feel at home rather than being treated like a VIP. I miss the Filipino hospitality the most. :) I'll try to browse the web for pictures, but If i need more I'll PM you my e-mail address, that's if you have and want to send pics. Thanks again, Mei for taking the time to respond.

hi! i'm not from davao, but I'm married to a davaoeno. I've been there just once pero i really liked it. Very safe. Unspoiled. Yung asawa ko who works in davao city but hails from Samal island, is really very proud of Davao, at dapat lang. The food is great, and cheap. Yung taxi's nakakatuwa kasi it's always readily available, at mura! We took a cab ride for almost an hour and paid only less than P150! Gulat na gulat ako. Di nakailangan ng airconditioned cab kasi sariwa ang hangin at malamig. The people are very warm, and accomodating sa hindi taga doon. He's been in manila at talaga namang lalo syang naging proud sa province nyo kasi alam naman natin ang status ng manila. I'm going back there, hopefully next year pagbabakasyon ulit. At saka I really feel safe sa davao. Living in Rizal all my life, hindi ko in-expect na sasabihin ko sa sarili ko about Davao na "I could live here..." at hindi lang dahil taga davao ang asawa ko. Davao feels like home to me...

Mei, I hope your feeling better!!! You think you could get me hotel rates in Davao. My experience while staying in Makati 5 years ago was that rates were cheaper if booked locally rather than going through online booking. I wonder if it is the same with Davao. Also how much is needed per day per person (hotel, food , transportation, etc) to visit Samal. I read in the other forums, Pearl Farm is a must visit place. Or would you recommend other places? Thanks in advance and it's ok if it's too much troulble. Take care!

Thanks for the links Mei! Has anyone been to paradise island? From their website it seems like a nice place. Their rates seem a lot more reasonable than pearl farm. Is pearl farm worth the extra cost? I don't need a spa as their are nice spas all around me here in California. How is the weather there in August?

Mei, If we meet it would probably be just by chance...perhaps at your aunts restaurant. If I meet you it will be cool, but, realistically, I probably never will.
If I do make it to Davao, I will be visiting a family in Buhangin and my stay would be short (about 3-4 days). I was hoping to be there for someones birthday in August. Unfortunately, August is not looking good as far as my trip :(
Take care and thanks for all the good information you shared about your beautiful city.

I responded to this a couple of days ago, but I guess it never got posted  Mei, I'll pass this info to my cousin here. I think she could make use of this if she doesn't already. I don't call there much anymore as most of my cousins and friends are oversees. I wish this was available a few years back.

My August trip, due to unforseen circumstances, has unfortunatley been cancelled, otherwise I would have been there on Aug 10 :( . I've rescheduled my trip to Manila in mid October. Hopefully I have better luck during that time.

hello! you two (mei and uncle louie) sound as if you guys are truly having fun hehe you almost have the entire page :) i wonder now if you two should really meet. no excuses, uncle louie! you should meet up! :D

"What"... due to this site and the internet, I know more about Davao City in the last two months, than in my entire life, including the 13 years I've lived in Luzon *okay* . But, I would have never inquired about Davao if I would have never met a couple of nice people (to remain anonymous) on the 'net from Davao.

So, because of what will be a hectic 3 week itinerary while in the Philippines, I was planning to spend around 3 days in Davao to meet them in person. This is why I'm reluctant in promising a meet with anyone else including Mei because it may be disrespectful to them to do so. But, if everything turns out ok and we do meet, coffee, tee or soft drinks is cool with me. Caffeine happens to be my drug of choice.

The impression I am getting so far is Davaoenios are nice, fun-loving people and I feel my trip there will be well worth it. :)

Kadayawan... wow that's where those colorful pictures are from. I had to search "kadayawan" on the net just now. My friends never told me my original itenerary would put me there in the middle of your festival. I'm sorry I'm missing it :mecry: .

What's Oktoberfest? How do you celebrate it? When is it?

You guys celebrate holloween? Since when? All I remember is All Saints Day and All souls Day :D . I would either be in Baguio or Laoag on Oct 31'st but never planned on celebrating holloween. I plan on visiting relatives graves on Nov 1 or 2 in Pangasinan then fly back on the 3rd or 4th. Hmmm......I just realized what a hectic itinerary I have planned :( .

After college, I had to do a little "soul searching", though, so I now only come back whenever there are business-related trips or job-related trips. halloween...well, filipinos don't actually celebrate halloween..but this october 31st, our baister family in davao...(check out www.baister.net...)will be having a halloween street party...and i'm really excited about it....hehhe...

j42002 --- in davao standards, ahfat's prices are a bit steep. you know naman how we're all sanay to order good food and yet only pay a very reasonable price. however, if you're from manila or abroad, you'll find ahfat's prices to be super cheap. i brought my manila friends there the last time i was in town and they went so crazy ordering lobsters, shrimps and crabs LOL i think we only paid P400.00 for 4 pieces of crabs. that's so unheard of in manila :D

Wow, so many good places to eat in Davao, I'm going to have to figure out how I could extend my stay in October.

Could someone tell me how fresh the "sashimi" is at Tsuru, specially their "hamachi"? How are their prices there?

Garlic tuyo? Mmmmm, I'm going to have to try that.

Any hotel recommendations in Davao City?
I'm a shorts, t-shirt and tsinelas kind of guy when vacationing in the Philippines. The place must be clean, with AC and a hot shower and have a friendly staff.
Has anyone stayed at The Waterfront Insular or Crowne Regency before. Also doesn anyone know of a good site that has a large detailed map of Davao?

hello there, try calling sampaguita tourist Inn... 0822272958 pag ndi na ito ang number hanapin mo sa directory. its clean and cheap malapit pa sa davao doctors hospital;..may kainan sa loob ng bldg, or sa labas madami kainan... ..malimit puro ahente (med rep) doctors students din ang nakatira **...ilang araw ba need nyo stay??? you can get a plain room w/ or w/o cr, pwede naman per call ang tv...hehehe portable miski malaki:rotflmao: . ok security. babaan at sakayan ang front building...nasa middle itong bldg. na ito....safe at nsa downtown.

to go there...just ask the taxi/jeep drivers na ibaba ka sa davao doctors hospital,sa likod lang rightside, 2nd street.

hope this helps;) merry:) christmas and happy new year*okay*

di natin alam.. meron din kcng pwedeng magdisguise as DDS and pumatay na lang ala DDS .. yun ang problem.. it can be abused and maybe one time the killing will not be for criminal elements alone.

I just wondered bakit walang napapatay na "big fish"? puro small time? takot ba sila?

I heard that PDEA davao.. has been doing the things....like what happened in Manila that the PDEa agents are using and selling the confiscated drugs for their own profit. not destroying them..

It depends kung ilang hours of work and how many meals. 20-30 pesos fare (back & forth) 30-50 pesos per meal.

80-130 pesos per day siguro. Then again it varies. Kung walang affordable carenderia(spelling?) sa paligid ng workplace, baka abot ng 230 pesos. Yung sa fare, jeep lang yan ha. Sa lawak ng Davao, mahirap na mag-taxi.

Executioners’ on killing spree

UNIDENTIFIED killers are preying on young men whom the killers identify through notes left on the bodies as members of "Luwa Gang," allegedly involved in petty thefts.

Friday dawn, a taxi driver identified as Juanito Onin passing through Lakandula Street at around 4 a.m. noticed two blooded bodies by the road.

Police Officer Jeffrey Bangkas of the Sta. Ana Police Precinct described one of the bodies as having no shirt and wearing a pair of gray jogging pants, stands between 5'1"-5'2" with dark complexion, and around 30 years old.

The body bore a wound on the chest and face, believed to be caused by a blunt object.

The second body was wearing a pair of maong pants, a violet t-shirt, around 5'1" in height, with a slim built, and also around 30 years old. The body had a slashed nape.

A P50-bill was recovered at the crime scene, along with a paper that read: "HUWAG TULARAN. LUWA GANG. MANGUNGUOT. (Don’t follow. Luwa Gang. Pick pocket)"

The Sta. Ana police are still conducting further investigation to identify the suspects. As of Friday, the bodies of the victims remain unclaimed and unidentified.

Another body was found at around 6:20 a.m. at Purok 9, San Rafael Village, Davao City by a one Lexter Pepito Baring, 24, a resident of Sitio Felomina, Catalunan Grande, Davao City.

Based on investigation led by Police Officer Pablo D. Eguia of the San Pedro Police, the body bore a stab wound on the upper right chest, causing his instantaneous death.

A fourth body was found along Pearl Street, Marfori Subdivision, Davao City. The victim is believed to be around 28 years old, with brown complexion, 5'5" tall, big build, and with letters "JC" tattooed on the chest and "wheng" near the buttocks.

The body wore a light brown polo and maong pants and had a gunshot wound on the head.

Inside the victim's wallet was a message written on paper that read: "Salbahis mangongo-ot luwa gang basura sa katawhan (Bad, a pocket pick, luwa gang scum of humanity)" (MS)

Several years back, when Island Buenavista Resort was simply called Small Ligid (because a Big Ligid isle is not far away), the Ayala family of Davao regularly retreat to this private hideaway with amenities only catered to its owners. Opening it to the public stemmed from an idea that maybe there are those who harbor fantasies of owning the whole island while being pampered in solitude. How many would love that if they can afford it?

Now a first class resort dubbed as Davao’s version of Amanpulo, the Island Buenavista can be reached within an hour from Davao City. Its jumpoff point from Samal Island is Ana Marina Resort (also owned by the Ayalas), where a boat awaits to transfer guests across the isle within view in 10 minutes. Once you step on the four-hectare isle, the expanse of powdered white sands and aquamarine sea sparkling under the sun lulls you into a very relaxed tropical state of mind. You either want to immediately explore or just find a nearby hammock and step into dreamland. Laziness and serenity beckon.

While the sight of airconditioned villas, open beach huts, suites, pavilion and a secluded swimming pool provide material comforts and luxury, one cannot help but feel the urge to throw caution to the winds, shed any strip of clothing and run naked along the shore…your shore, for now! Of course very friendly waiters in soft sarongs hover unobtrusively, bringing you the island refreshment of newly opened buko juice served with straw.

Private individuals, corporations, foreigners and celebrities have visited this little paradise gently surrounded by sapphire blue waters of the Davao Gulf. And nothing, not even celebrity buzzes, have reached curious mainland ears. “Owning the island” gives you an overwhelming sense of privacy where you live an exclusive indulgence away from a stressful civilization.

http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/5421/biri2mn3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Food is locally prepared by the staff according to your preference. A long buffet table in the Pavilion offers fresh seafood, pork and chicken barbecue, “pinaputok na tilapia”, hito (catfish) and other native dishes worth gaining the pounds for. Sometimes they tempt you with a taste of sea urchins dipped in vinegar, “sea roaches” delectably tasty like peanuts which you can chew, and that very intriguing, funny shaped oyster shells which locals amusingly call “bilatbato” (ask a Visayan what it means).

With the island to yourself, you can sleep anywhere: in the comforts of your airconditioned room, in a tent, or barenaked on the shore. The soothing music you can only hear are waves rushing to shore, and the cries of exotic peacocks strutting around the isle. You get up in the morning with breakfast waiting at your table. You can snorkel with the fishes, go kayaking or exploring the underwater delights of the deep blue. You can also visit its turtle sanctuary. For the more adventurous, arrange for a short intro dive course with a professional dive master. You can paint, read a book or write poetry at the Gazebo or Teahouse. Have your dinner prepared on the beach under the stars. Drinks are also available at the well-stocked bar in the Pavilion or Poolside. The island is well-lit in the evenings having two generator sets on stand by.

An exclusive use of the entire island, facilities, food and accommodations, sports amenities including boat transfers for an overnight stay will cost a minimum of ten persons a rate of US$215++ per night for each guest. A day tour package will cost you US$100++ per person for a group of ten. Philippines city flourishes under rule of the gun

By KATHY MARKS

DAVAO - In the Philippines and beyond, the southern island of Mindanao is a byword for civil war, anarchy and violence. Its mountains and jungles harbour separatist guerrillas locked in a struggle for an independent Muslim state. Kidnappings are rife, and a Communist insurgency has raged for decades. Tribal warlords backed by private militias rule a fearful population at gunpoint.

The exception is Davao, a bustling metropolis on the south coast of Mindanao, nestling at the foot of Mount Apo, the country's highest peak. Under the leadership of its mayor, Rodrigo Duterte, the rate of street crime in the sprawling port city has plummeted. Davao, voted one of Asia's "most liveable" cities by Asiaweek magazine, is booming. Foreign investment is flooding in.

But Davao's reputation as an oasis of law and order in one of the world's most dangerous regions masks a dark secret. Since Duterte took office three years ago, the city has witnessed a wave of murders, carried out in daylight by assassins on motorbikes. The victims are young men and street children suspected of petty crime. The death toll has reached 241, and not a single person has been arrested. This is one statistic that proud civic authorities are not so keen to trumpet to the outside world. For the killings are believed to be the work of a shadowy vigilante group, the Davao Death Squad, which reportedly operates with the blessing of the police and City Hall.
In fact, it is difficult to find anyone in Davao who is not convinced that the squad was created by Duterte himself. The mayor, who has acquired nationwide notoriety as the "Dirty Harry of the Philippines", denies that the murders are officially sanctioned. But he recently boasted on the campaign trail that the number of killings – more than 100 last year - would double if he was re-elected this week.

"Let me tell you a secret," says a taxi driver, in a conspiratorial whisper. "He is mayor by day and terminator by night. They should rename him Arnie Schwarzenegger."

Bizarre though it seems, few people in this city of 1.2 million are disturbed by the sight of dead bodies turning up, almost daily, on the streets.

They call it the "40-pesos solution" to crime, referring to the cost of a bullet. "I like it," says Davao's tourism officer, Edmundo Acaylar, stuffing a handful of cashew nuts into his mouth as he waits impatiently for dinner.

"Whoever is doing it, I say 'thanks very much, you're doing a great job'. "They are ridding Davao of criminals and making it a safe place. I call it a process of expurgation." Most of the victims come from the city's slum communities, where half a million people live in grinding poverty. Many are teenagers, some as young as 14, whose only "crime" was sniffing solvents - said to take away hunger pangs.

Others are suspected drug pushers, pickpockets or thieves, with a record of snatching handbags and mobile phones. Justice is meted out by two men on a motorbike, one acting as look-out, the other as assassin. Many of the murders have been carried out in public places, in full view of crowds of onlookers. But no witnesses have come forward to testify.

"People fear that if they give evidence, they'll be next," says Carlos Zarate, president of the Davao chapter of the Philippine bar association.

Lawyers believe the death squad is run by Davao police, in collusion with Duterte. Bernie Mondragon, the co-ordinator of the Kabataan consortium of children's advocacy groups, agrees.

"These are summary executions," he says. "They are state-sponsored killings. Otherwise, the death squad could not operate with such impunity."

Police deny any involvement and blame turf wars between rival drug gangs. "There have been some killings but, fortunately or unfortunately, the victims were all criminals," says Conrado Laza, the chief of Davao police.

He looks incredulous when shown a list of children who have died. "These names are not in our records," he says. Laza claims that the death squad is a myth, "a creation of the media". Despite the 241 unsolved deaths, the Davao police department has received national accolades for reducing crime.

Clarita Alia is a tiny, grief-stricken woman who pushes a vegetable trolley in the public market in the slum district of Bankerohan. Alia used to have seven sons; now she has three.

First to die was Richard, 18, who was stabbed outside a cafe in July 2001. Three months later, 16-year-old Christopher was killed while eating a plate of barbecued chicken at a roadside stall. Bobby, just 14, was attacked as he left a karaoke bar in November 2002. A man plunged a hunting knife into his back. He collapsed in the middle of Bankerohan market.

Weeping frequently, Alia, 48, recounts how a police officer warned her before Richard's death that "they will get my sons, one after the other". She says: "He told me that the Alia brothers were on his 'order of battle'. Later, after Richard and Christopher were killed, the police warned me that Bobby would be next."

The Tambayan Centre, a charity that works with youth gangs, smuggled Bobby out of Davao and placed him in a shelter in General Santos, another city on Mindanao. But he was unable to adjust and returned to his mother. Soon afterwards, he was killed.

"It was a terrible blow, because we all knew it was coming," says Tambayan's programme officer, Pilgrim Gayo-Guasa.

The Alia brothers had been in and out of trouble for alleged crimes ranging from theft and solvent abuse to possession of a knife. "I don't believe they committed any grave offence," says their mother.

"Whatever they did, my sons didn't deserve to die." Duterte talks tough and packs a .38 pistol. He rides a Harley-Davidson and runs the city like a Mafia boss. He rarely goes into the office, patrolling the streets at night and sleeping until noon. In the past, he has posed as a taxi driver and street vendor to catch criminals. He has been known to slap errant motorists in the face.

Children have been dragged to City Hall for a beating. The mayor is a one-man crusade against crime, but he loathes the drug trade with a particular vengeance. He went on local television to read out lists of alleged peddlers and addicts, warning them of dire consequences unless they left town.

In the ensuing weeks, many people named were killed. Others were targeted after being picked up by police, murdered within days - or even minutes – of being released.

Duterte's zero-tolerance policies are enormously popular. The President of the Philippines, Gloria Arroyo, has appointed him her special adviser on law and order. His constituents credit him with transforming the image of Davao, once the most lawless city in the Philippines.

Callers to talkback radio extol his achievements. The summary killings were the main issue in this week's election, which saw him swept back into office with a big majority.

Sofronio Jucutan, the president of the Chamber of Commerce, says the elimination of criminals is good for business. "We don't condone summary killings, but we want society to be cleansed of its scum," he says. "These people are garbage and, just like any garbage, you have to dispose of them."

He adds: "But we are a Catholic country and we value human life."

At one of his campaign rallies, Duterte, 59, told the crowd: "If I win, more criminals will get killed because I have vowed to protect the people of this city. It's true that there have been killings. But who were those killed? Weren't they criminals? They were all fools. Now if you tell me you won't vote for me because I've killed many people, then don't vote for me."

In an interview, he is more circumspect. "If you are asking me whether these are state-sponsored killings, they are not," he says. "But I am pleased that these criminals are no longer around to bother law-abiding people." Cracking his knuckles, he says: "If you deal in drugs, eventually you will die. Sometimes, in this world, you have to pay for your sins."

The interview follows an eve-of-election press conference, called to reject a claim by his mayoral opponent, Benjamin de Guzman, that Duterte was plotting to assassinate him.

Holding court in a Chinese restaurant in Davao's Grand Men Seng Hotel, the mayor pokes fun at his rival.

"If I kill de Guzman, it will not be because I want to win the election," he says. "It will be a mercy killing, to put an end to his agony. It will be political euthanasia."

The local journalists giggle sycophantically. Duterte, mightily pleased with himself, repeats the joke several times.

The mayor is a tightly coiled spring of a man, with a cold smile and elegantly manicured fingernails. He quotes, variously, from Virgil and the Bible.

According to one story, much repeated, he once took a notorious criminal up in a helicopter, opened the door and threw him out.

The local television station has footage of him kicking the body of one of the death squad's victims - to check he was dead, he explained afterwards.

Duterte's word is law in Davao. Police raiding premises without a search warrant announce that they are acting "on order of the mayor".

Alia, meanwhile, lives in dread. After Bobby was killed, strangers tracked down her two youngest sons, Fernando, 13, and Raymond, 7, who are living in a shelter.

She has been warned that another son, 25-year-old Arnold, will be next. She says, "What have I done to deserve all these deaths?"

DAVAO CITY — Recent data from various diver organizations citing the increase in number of the poisonous “crown-of-thorns” or known as “dap-ag” have alarmed the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Crown-of-thorns is a red starfish with thorn-like spines sprouting all over its body. Its long spines are capable of pricking and stinging, inflicting great pain that can last for hours, as well as nausea and vomiting if accidentally touched or stepped.

DENR noted about 3,000 pieces of such starfish in the Coral Garden, Island Garden City of Samal.

Regional Technical Director Emmanuel Isip said that this number is very much alarming which pushed the office to consider crown-of-thorns as harmful to the water system.

“ The increase in their number would translate an imbalance of the ecosystem because they destroy the coral reef.”, he explained.

Studies showed that this species is at least partly responsible for the loss of coral reefs, because they are voracious predators that can wipe out large areas of coral; one starfish can consume up to 6 square meters of living reef per year.

Isip attributed the decreasing number of Napoleon Wrass or “Mameng” to the proliferation of the poisonous starfish.

“Mameng” is said to be the biological predator of the “crown-of-thorns”. Due to the high market demand of “Mameng” especially as a food specialty in Chinese restaurants, plenty of this species have been cited as endangered.

Davao Gulf and Management Council’s Margarita Moran Floirendo said that environment advocates had started inspecting restaurants in Manila if they sell and cook “Mameng” which costs about P2,500 per piece.

Floirendo said that Davao could somehow do the same in strictly monitoring restaurants and pushing for their closure if proven to have been selling such variety.

DENR, on the other hand, could only strengthen its education drive by informing the people on the need to preserve “Mameng”.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) claimed that certain steps have been started in Palawan to take care of its breeding. (PIA XI/Mai Gevera)

Cats: beach bum

Canibad Beach Resort used to be a wonderful secret down Barangay Aundanao, Samal Island, located on the other side of the isle facing Davao Oriental. Now everybody knows about it. This hidden cove (which takes an hour’s rugged but scenic trip from the IGACOS pier) is ideally situated where creamy white sands meet crystal clear emerald waters. Sarap ang tubig! But our wacky group came here for a swimsuit fashion pictorial all for fun. The trip was worth it. We just paid P20 per head for the entrance because we weren’t staying overnight.

Dap-ag is a local term of the crown of thorns.....well its sad to note that its population is increasing...well before i leave Davao City, its already one of the problem that samal is facing....and one of the activities that is lined up to get rid of these is dap-ag collection. I know how hard to remove this creatures in the sea, cause you are not going to kill it underwater you have to take it from there alive cause if you will kill it under water the more it will proliferate.....and its not easy to get it.....

for me....

if you'll be in matina pangi, it is so accesible to the beaches, malls, etc..

if you'll be in toril, indangan, cabantian... I think, layo siya sa city proper...

kung catalunan, dili siya layo.. pero, so so.... but it's peaceful... so, kung quiet moments ang imong gusto, ok ni...

I hope I've helped you... just be here and *** na bahala sa place na gusto nimo...

land transportation will do...

land transportation from Mati directly to Bislig City? How long would the travel time be?

Mati is 3.5 to 4 hours away from Davao.

And Mati is still part of Davao right? From Mati, can we go directly to Bislig or do we need to go back to Davao so that we could have a ride going to Bislig?

Anakariz
Nov 9, 2007, 09:35 AM
It's part of the Davao Region but It's in Davao Oriental.

I really don't know the travelling hours going to Bislig coz I haven't been there...

Canibad Beach Resort
