hi, sa pagkakaintindi ko pwede naman kahit anong course mo e. as long as you take the NMAT-required units of chem and bio (which is a really good idea, kase that way you know what you're getting into).

u have to take up required these subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Physics & Math ( i dunno kung ilang units per subject dapat) then take ka ng NMAT (National Medical Admission Test) then ok na, puwede ka ng mag-med.... but before that nga pala, u have to think it over & over again because medicine is kinda tough.

actually parang gusto ko kasing mag-medicine din e... i think parang di ko trip yung course ko ngayon e... and i would like to have some alternatives e... actually gusto ko din mag-i.t. pero parang napakadali ng makakuha nun e and you can learn programming through reading and training e since marami dyang nag-o-offer... but medicine is kinda hard e... sa aking opinyon lang ha... :silly:

aba puwede ren!
not only Mechanical Engineering but also related to medicine.

ever heard of BioMechanical Engineering?

medicine and Engr ang course na yon.
applying Mechantronics or Machine Design sa field of medicine, gaya ng robotic or artificial limb, etc.

hi Benyaki!!! am a biostudent and most of my friends went to med school na. anyway, about ur question... y ou need to take up comparative anatomy, chemistry, zoology, botany, physics etc.

you will have a hard time in med if you dont get the simple basics first because there, you will study the same things at the human body level so mas mahirap.

anyway, about kung mahirap ang medicine... hindi naman siya mahirap as in mahirap intindihin ang subjects... mas malaki ang responsibility kaysa sa hirap at bukod pa dun, maraming oras kailangang binubuhos. yun ang nagpapahirap. if you've got IQ for engineering, im sure... you have enough for med. pero yun lang nga, kahit smart ka... medicine is still a GIFT. some people are born healers while others are not kahit smart sila.. that's what my doctor friend told me.

alam ko sa UP-PGH, you just have to have a bachelor's degree in any course , pero you also have to take extra bio & chem units.

sa st. luke's: 15 bio units, 10 each of chem, physics, math units. parang ganun din ata sa iba.

bad breath : bs bio ka rin? UP? me too! :beam:

benyaki, guys,

i'll also be graduating now from Computer Science course and like you benyaki, i'm plannning on taking up pre-med, something like biology or microbiology. My goal is to land a career in research work or something like that kasi ayaw kong mag doctor as in doctor sa ospital = )

ok na ba pang start yung bs bio or microbio guys ? and what schools can you recommend ?

you don't have to shift to a pre-med course any more. i have classmates that have degrees in totally non-medical fields, like philosophy and masscomm.
you do need to take a few additional units though, like i did. most medschools require that an applicant have at least 15units in biology, 10units chemistry, 5units physics, 9units math. i suppose you already have enough units in chem, physics and math so you probably only need to take up the additional units in bio.

now, think loooong and hard before doing this because medschool, quite literally, is hell on earth!! but it's also a lotta fun ;) so there ya go, hope that helps :)

that's also the goal of one of my classmates. she doesn't really want to practice medicine, so medschool is like her stepping stone to getting an m.d.-ph.d in research.
yes, try microbiology or molecular bio and biotech. ust has microbio, up has mbb.. i don't know of any other school that offer these courses. maybe la salle does.
from what i hear, maganda yung mbb program ng up. and my classmates with that degree are really mahusay! :)
hope that helps..

The UP college of medicine accepts graduates with any bachelors degree. The thing is, the NMAT is also required for admission. The NMAT requires you to have some units in bio, chem, etc. (I'm not quite sure).

I graduated from UP med recently. I have classmates from AB Philo and BA Psych. Some upper classes have Comp sci grads, Business administration and accountancy grads, and Music grads.

Biomedical engineering is an up and coming field. So far, I do not know of any formal training course offered in the Philippines. Its an exciting field because of how fast technology improves now. Postgraduate courses are offered in universities abroad though. And I feel that it is time for the country to have people interested in this specialty. Imagine treating patients from remote locations (telemedicine). Or creating microscopic robots which can unclog arteries without having the patient undergo expensive and risky surgery (nanotechnology). Or creating affordable robotic hands and legs for amputees.

In the near future, this country will need doctors whoa re also specialists in this field. So if you are really interested in medicine and you are willing to spend a few more years burning the midnight oil, go for it. Take up medicine. Many doors will open for you and you will make a difference. (ok ba pep talk?)

There is this field called medical informatics. You might be interested in this field. I'm planning on pursuing this too. If you want to know more, you can email me.
Good luck

Forgive me for a second off topic post...

Bio is really not that hard. I didn't exactly do great in my Bio subjects (except the taxonomy ones..hehe), what I did was just to read (important), take notes (important too) and listen (you can sometimes get off without this). A "secret" to doing well in Bio is to learn how to memorize. Memorization isn't just remembering stuff, you have to organize it in such a way as to make retrieval easier. My personal technique was making big, complete tables by hand so that I could easily compare stuff.

I'll tell you this early that if you don't develop your reading habit now, you'll find medicine extra hard. I'm at UP-PGH right now and I'll say two things: 1) I guess studies here are at least twice as hard as in Bio 2) There are really lots of stuff to read and memorize. My goal is not to scare you but to tell the truth :) . Since you're only 2nd year, then you still have time to prepare - you can still make the most out of it.

P.S: If you get subjects under Ms. Sumugat (Bio 101/101.1) and Ms. Posa (Bio 132.1), say hello for me, they're my batchmates :).

If you're interested in doing research (and not averse to studying abroad), biomedical engineering is a good option. You can take up graduate studies abroad, will usually take about 5 or 6 years to get a PhD. Some schools will offer you the option of spending an extra 2 years after you earn your PhD to get the MD. The simplest way to get more info is to look up the whitaker foundation website (www.whitaker.org).
Good luck.

:silly:

You don't need to shift to another course. Just take the needed prerequisite subjects (can't remember anymore the complete list and corresponding units needed) during the summer.

Medicine is harder than your college course. I finished Med Tech, and boy, 1 sem's biochemistry (in college) is crammed into 2-3 hours in medicine! However, nalampasan ko na iyan, and I don't have a single regret for following my childhood dream.

Follow your heart...

Where are you guys pursuing Medical Informatics? I know of this group called Phil. Medical Informatics Society - members are mostly from UP PGH and UPD Computer Science (ironic but I don't think there's a member from UP LB or even UP Manila Computer Science). I have seen some Health Informatics projects from UP D students - they sure are practical... yet impressive as well. If you want to know more about it, send me a private message - I might be able to hook you up with this prof from UPD.
