Ateneo po. :) Share lang ako... my blockmate's friend is taking up European Studies in UP. She asked my blockmate, "Musta Ateneo? Baka naman conio ka na!" Sabi naman ng blockmate ko, "Sus, hindi noh! Wala ngang conio sa block namin eh!" (Wala talaga... buti naman! :D) Her friend replied, "Talaga?? Buti pa kayo... sa block ko, ang daming conio!" Hehehe...

i thought people from lasalle were models, actors, total wannabes. they really didn't study and all they ever did was go to parties. i thought lasallians weren't very smart. they think they're so popular.

but after staying in lasalle for 2 trimesters, i realized people from lasalle weren't like that at all (except for a very very small number). they were really serious about studying and extra curricular activities. they aren't apathetic and are very intelligent.

I agree!

Example...

Nicole Hernandez....at first I thought she was just pretty face in campus. But after having been her classmate for 1 sem, I realized that I totally misjudged her. She was very serious in her studies and was very participative. In addition, what really shocked me was, she was the highest in our class!!! Surprised ako! :surprised:

NA LAHAT NG NAG-AARAL SA UP AY MATATALINO...

Marami akong kakilala who seem to be intelligent, pero when they start to speak, nahahalata na what they're really made of. Confident lang talaga ang mga taga-UP na matatalino sila for the sole reason that they study in UP.

For me, that's what sets UP students apart from other schools: confidence in their intellectual capacity, or the lack of it.:p

Bopols like charlie_g and mac_bolang are perfect examples of these "feeling" intellectuals. But then again, UP's admission process doesn't screen for mental illnesses (charlie_g's sub-80 IQ) and physical abnormalities like mac_bolang's being a hermaphrodite.

The good thing is that the bright UPians like Les, monsterboy, seav, lancaster et al outnumber the dumbos like charlie_g and mac_bolang. It's too bad, however, that these bozos are the more visible ones, especially in PEx, which tarnishes UP's otherwise good image. I suggest the respectable UPians police their own clowns by reprimanding them for their unbecoming behavior. I'm tired of putting them in their rightful place...in the stinking cesspool.:D

hindi naman siguro. im rathers sure na meron din namang laman ang utak ng mga schoolmates ko. its just that some are way too confident and they flaunt this arrogance in front of non-UP people. tsk.

so far, i dont have any misconceptions about my school. i did expect it to be a microcosm of philipine society, and it (for me) really is. even if it doesnt reflect the current social srata in the country. *sigh*

Greatest misconception about UP is that the students are bright.

Best proof this is false is mac_bolang and charlie_g, the epitome of the exact opposite of "bright."

Regarding mac_bolang, he collects "bolos" and is into judo, which exemplifies his extreme concern for his questionable masculinity or lack thereof. Why don't we EB and have a duel, mac_bolang? My 45 against your judo and bolos? I promise I won't bring my bodyguard.:D

if you want to stalk someone in PEX, i suggest someone of the opposite sex.

the first man who draws weapon is the first to run out of arguments. didn't the jesuits tell you that? and you may bring your bodyguards if you want. i doubt if they'll outnumber my brods, or out-gun my ABB-friends.

Go ahead and bring your brods (or is "sis" the more appropriate word) and ABB friends along. The more, the merrier. I can then contribute to the control of unwanted population growth in the Philippines in one fell swoop. I'll ask my bodyguards to bring their armalites instead. Don't worry. It will be swift and painless.

That La Sallites are showbiz peeps and De La Salle is ONLY good in IT and Accounting

That Atenans are “men for others” and Ateneo is next after UP (both Asiaweek and CHED say it's La Salle!)

That Thomasians are “patay-gutom” and UST is ONLY a Med School

That UPians are apathetic and UP has ample budget for its expansion and research

Misconception #1: UP is the premier university in the Philippines.

Fact #1: UP is the premier state university in the Philippines but not the premier university. Private universities like the Ateneo, DLSU and UST are much better in terms of quality of education, the quality of their graduates, their world-class global connections (i.e., Jesuits, Christian Brothers, Dominicans), etc. Results of licensure and other Board exams do not support UP's contention as the "premier" university as students from the private universities tend to produce superior track records. Furthermore, UP, despite its size, is outnumbered by the alumni of Ateneo as well as DLSU in the corporate boardrooms. The economic elite of the country are dominated by Ateneans, La Sallians, and Thomasians, not UPistas. UPistas domininate the government agencies and bureaucracies.

Fact #2: UP tends to rank no. 1 in surveys mainly because: 1) it is the state university, and 2) it offers the most comprehensive course offerings of any school in the country.

Fact #3: UP is just another third-rate public school in an impoverished Third World country and does not enjoy the international status and global "brand" names of the Jesuit, Dominicans, and Christian Brothers. :D

That Benilde is the dumping ground of Lasalle rejects....NOT!

Our school used to be part of Lasalle but we gained independece in 1988, we are also part of the Lasalle System, hence Lasallians or Benildeans are the terms we use to address ourselves. Courses offered in Lasalle differ from Benilde.

It's like asking if you're a Bedan when you're from St. Benedictine College. Same thing if you ask me. So why make a big deal out of it in the first place?!

Perhaps, in some areas of learning, but not in everything. If the Asiaweek survey would be the basis, then it's more or less equal with Ateneo and DLSU since the latter schools are just ahead with only a few decimal points. A 0.-- something or so makes a negligible difference.

if ure an atenean or la sallian, they automatically think ure sum sort of a rich cono.
if ure from up, then u must be sum sort of a brainiac
if ure a thomasian, the first thing that comes is the flood.. or that were logging behind the big three
and if ure from ama...ure a jolinian or sumthing....

i might have offended sumbody in the other threads, but not exactly bashing a university, just answering the question there, so dont think im a hypocrite

why cant people judge u from *** u are, not *** school ure from??

misconception: we're all RICH.

the truth is, a good number of students are under scholarship. the population of scholars in the Ateneo is continually growing.

mac: i don't have anything against UP. i have a great deal of friends (kabarkada) who chose to study there coz of the incredibly low tuition fee. fortunately, i have a scholarship that's why i'm in ADMU. otherwise, i'd be in UP too.

i just don't know why you HATE (this is a big and ugly word) Jesuits. is that bitterness? a bad experience with a priest?... or are you an atheist?

The greatest misconception about the Ateneo is that

everyone is rich and/or smart.

About 1/7 or so of the tuition goes to scholars, that's why the loyola schools are in the red, among other reasons.

And you will wonder how some students got into Ateneo. Is it because there are loopholes in the admission system? Or is the quality of primary and secondary education in general worsening?

Private universities like the Ateneo, DLSU and UST are much better in terms of quality of education, the quality of their graduates, their world-class global connections (i.e., Jesuits, Christian Brothers, Dominicans), etc.

>>> I think UP has more world-class global connections with other universities or institutions, not with religious orders. Hindi ko na papatulan yung quality of their graduates and quality of education kasi different naman per program.

>>> Hindi naman ata sukatan ng kagalingan or success ang kayamanan o kung saan naka-upo yung mga alumni natin. Karamihan sa mga UPean hindi naman pinipili yumaman, full-time na aktibista, NGO, nagtuturo at sabi mo nga govt agencies. Service to our country, sabi nila. Karamihan nga ng kakilala ko na sa corporate world, kapag naka-reach na daw sila ng certain no., stop sila and retire or teach. At saka wag naman UPistas, UPean na lang or taga-UP. heheheh :)

Fact #3: UP is just another third-rate public school in an impoverished Third World country and does not enjoy the international status and global "brand" names of the Jesuit, Dominicans, and Christian Brothers.

>>>> Siguro third-rate public school nga kami pero kinikilala naman ang UP. Sa asiaweek na survey meron dung part na academic reputation. Nung 2000, pang 18 ang UP, DLSU 56, ADMU, 58 and UST 71.

Taken from Asiaweek: Academic Reputation: Each university was asked to rate its peers on a scale of 1 to 5. Thirty Asian corporations and 11 foreign universities (among them Columbia University, University of California Los Angeles and University of Leicester) also gave ratings.

1. UP - Hindi lahat ng tao sa UP Mautak at masipag mag-aral.

As in they pay no tuition fee at all.

3. DLSU - Although atenean ako, I must give justice to la salle naman. Although most of them are mapera nga lang.

4. UST - Hindi Jologs ang USTE! I happened to study in UST for a year before transfering to Ateneo. In fact, almost every month may concert sa USTE and even MTV Asia had a show sa eng complex ng USTE last year. At hindi sila always nasa 4th. They have many things to brag about kaya nga lang they do not voice out those achievements loudly. They should be proud of their school which is rich in history and other things.

Bottomline: Hindi tayo dapat nag-ge-generalize masyado about a certain school. What we saw in one case does not reflect the entire thing about something. Diba?

PEACE! :)

you're quoting "popular" mis-conceptions without really understanding the schools.

opinion ko lang:

lahat naman ng schools (mapa main, csb, ust, up, ateneo....) have good and quite a number of bad characteristics. all schools have "feeling students" na kala nila sobrang ganda ng school nila and sobrang bulok na yun iba... i think that really is the problem. yun iba naman may dala lang car sa school sobrang taas noo na! eh ano kung nagcocommute ka di ba? yun iba naman makasuot lang ng maganda with matching accessories pa sobrang yabang na! eh ano kung ang suot mo ay local or fake lang? papansinin pa ba yun?

i mean let's all admit it.. nag-iiba yun image ng school because of the attititude of some pathetic students..
