Tska sa Miss World mostly Europeans and Blacks ang nanalo. May favoritism ata e

Yup, you're right... Miss World productions are very dull and dry...very typical of British productions in general...
Take for example the Brit Awards, which is the direct counterpart of the Grammy Awards of the U.S. Which one is dry and lacks promotion? Which one is livelier and is watched more by people around the world?
Get my point? It's not that I'm discriminating or something, I'm just stating facts.

Miss Universe... need I say more?? Miss Universe has a very special place in every Pinoy's heart!!! Remember Shusmita?? heheheDon't you wonder everytime Bb. Pilipinas comes along ang habol nila is who gets to go to Miss Universe? My avatar is Miss Universe 2000 Lara Dutta from India. And Miss Universe gets more exposure.

MPULE & AGBANI COMPARISON TRIVIA:
1. Both are the first ever black African winners of their respective pageants. Mpule Kwelagobe was the first ever black African Miss Universe and Agbani is the first ever black African Miss World.
2. Both of their countries won their first ever titles in world pageant history when they were crowned.
3. Both are 6'0" tall and are slim.
4. Both sported the "business look" (coat & pants) during their first day as queens.
5. Both competed at both Miss World and Miss Universe pageants. Mpule competed in Miss World 1997 and lost. Agbani competed in Miss Universe 2001 and also lost.
6. Both had Asian looking first runners-up (Well Miriam Quiambao is truly Asian, of course! Zizi Lee, on the other hand is Caribbean but she has Asian roots for sure...) and European-Caucasian second runners-up.
7. Both were dark horses during the duration of their respective pageants.
8. Both NAILED IT during the final Q&A, which is why they won...

Umm, I think a black woman already won in the Miss Universe pageant before Mpule. I think it was Miss Trinidad and Tobago (even before Wendy Fritzwilliam, Ms T&T 1999). This was in 1977.
Anyway, I like the Miss Universe more since it's livelier than Miss World. However, I don't like the Miss Universe these past years compared to the early 90's. Sobrang ganda nung 93 & 94. I hated it when when they got rid of the parade of nations. And now, la na ring interview sa Top Ten.... sobrang nagtitipid sa airtime.

A bad production done by Miss Universe is waaay better than Miss World. At least they brought back the Parade of Nations this year, even if they only shout the country they represent.

Miss Universe ! ! !
Ang Miss World kasi napaka unpredictable ng winners. Ma-surprise ka na lang at minsan kung sino talaga ang nagugustuhan ng organizers (Morley and co.) ay mukhang yon talaga pinapanalo nila.

I stumbled this post in some message board, read on- this explains everything do you agree?
I recently stumbled on an article that featured Lara Dutta. In it, she said, "In times to come, people will not judge us by the creed we profess or the label we wear or the slogans we shout, but by our industry, sacrifices, honesty, and purity of character." Why can't our Filipina delegates speak like this?
Everytime I watch a Q&A portion of a local pageant, I always get so embarrassed that our women are so shallow and inarticulate. They are always trying to be pathetically cute. The only time I was really ever impressed with someone was with Darlene Carbungco's final response at Mutya. I think she said something profound, like "you can't remedy a mistake with another one." The point of all this is that our women do not have any substance. When it comes to their opinions, they hardly hold any. And this is why they stumble during interviews: they lack a firm stance on anything. They would much rather give an answer that would probably sound good at that moment rather than show others what they believe in. I think that many women have become complacent and do not even try to philosophize (?) the world around them. They are not well-read anymore. That, to me, is a shame.

I think Miss U is the best.
First, kahit llamado palagi ang USA, deserving naman sila, unlike sa Miss World na palaging llamado ang mga negra, bakit kaya?
I agree with Lara_Ganda_Ko, Indian women utter words with grace and profoundness, e dito papipiliin lang kung beautiful o smart, di pa maka-decide
Religion siguro ang reason kaya palaging philospphical ang mga Indians, Hinduism is diverse and deep, marami kang matututunan about Life and Nirvana, Indians usually base their answers on life's experiences and how religion shaped it.
Pero, in fairness to Ms. World, I liked their previous winners like the 1999 Indian Winner who looked like Audrey Hepburn and the Venezuelan winner in 1995. Talagang pretty

Yup, I also agree. The two big challenges Indian delegates in the past (especially the 90's) always go through are only the swimsuit & evening gown competitions. Once they score well in these two areas, the interview portion is easy for them... Kung baga once they enter the top 5, there always is that big possibility for them to bag the crown.
Take for example Miss India 1999 Gul Panag. She stumbled in the swimsuit competition. She got an 8.77 which ranked 10th in the semi-finals but her interview was 9.27, which ranked 1st. Because of this, she did not make the final 5 cut. Had she made it, she surely would have won the crown because of her perfect and witty answers.

Sorry JENSIE_G... nabobo ako dun ah.... hehe... :)
I agree with Lara, medyo tagilid ang mga Bb. Pilipinas contestants natin. And I don't understand why Stella Araneta can't scout for girls who are actually capable of delivering smart answers. I mean, ok fine, if they can't speak English well; they can answer in Tagalog anyway. But even then, kahit Tagalog na yung language nila, the other contestants still can't answer well....
For my part, Nina Ricci Alagao was the last Bb. Pilipinas winner that impressed me. Zorayda Andam is pretty ok, but NIna is more articulate and witty... I really expected her to make it in the Top Ten.... May thread na ba na ganito? - Who's the best Ms. Philippines-Universe representative? My top 3 would be 1.) Nina Ricci Alagao 2.) Charlene Gonzales 3.) Miriam Quiambao :)

Maybe the reason why Nina Ricci did not make the cut was because of her gown- it did not give her any justice- at ang lakas talaga ni Lara. And what frustrates me is that Stella Araneta ay walang believe sa mga Pinoy designers natin, and she would opt for the Colombian ones. Pati national costumes natin Colombian made!!!! Insulto na nga!!! It's kinda true that our local designers can be at par with them especially Inno Sotto. We have many beautiful women but because of the organizers our women cannot show off their full potential.

I think you're kinda right. Nina, herself, claimed she wasn't really, really impressed with that gold, backless halter gown and demanded last minute adjustments. Unfortunately, it was too late and she had to go on with the preliminaries by hook or by crook.
My hunch is that she received a very, very high prelim interview score, a satisfactory score for prelim evening gown, and a surprisingly low score for swimsuit. Although her figure was superb, her hair and make-up was not very impressive. I really don't know what happened. She, herself, was a professional make-up artist but what happened?
To tell you the truth, she was at her very best during the Bb. Pilipinas 2000 pageant. I really don't know what happened to her in Miss Universe. It remains a big mystery...

NEWSFLASH: From Global Beauties
The city of PORT LOUIS, MAURITIUS is set to be the VENUE FOR MISS UNIVERSE 2002!
MUI officials are awaiting the logistics details that the Mauritius Host Committee is set to submit not later this week. Tonight, the Miss Mauritius National Pageant will also take place. The winner will represent the island-nation in Miss Universe 2002 after its absence this year. Reports have it that Mauritius is dead serious in hosting this next year's pageant because of the tremendous exposure it would bring to the nation. Of course, the boost to tourism is expected.
Here is a list of the other cities that Mauritius is set to beat:
1. Hong Kong, Hong Kong
2. Sofia, Bulgaria
3. Miami Beach, Florida, USA
4. Isla de Margarita, Venezuela
5. San Juan, Puerto Rico
Let us all wait for the final announcement of MUI.

Hi there chez-o! NO, I am not from Bb. Pilipinas Charities or whatever organization you might think of. I'm just a simple citizen like you who loves to make regular follow-ups on beauty pageants. Unfortunately, I don't personally know Donald Trump or any other officials of MUI. =) Hehe. But I find your suggestions very important.
I have another suggestion for the evening gown portion. I think they should bring back those navy cadets dressed in their blue uniforms and make a formation consisting of two (2) rows. The semi-finalist will then pass between these two rows while the cadets raise their swords in the air. (sabres or whatever you call them for that matter) It's very classy and elegant. This was done during the Miss USA 1995 Evening Gown competition, where Miss New York Shanna Lynn Moakler won that competition by a landslide. =)

I'd say that Miss Universe this year was rigged... The title should have been given to Miss Greece or Miss Venezuela... Grabe talaga ang Puerto Rico mandaya... pati Clairol Herbal Essences Award, and Miss Photgenic binigay nila sa kandidata nila... Haayy... Imagine Miss Puerto Rico's costume making it into the Top 10 Best National Costumes that year? Eh ang pangit ng Costume ni Miss Denise Quinones? Waahh... Sana pati Miss Congeniality binigay na rin nila kay Denise para sweep talaga nila yung Awards.... Aayy... pati Best in Swimwear and Best in Long Gown din pala... Swimwear? Eh ang laki ng hita nung Denise na yun! Saka simple lang yung Gown niya huh! Di maganda... Best in Long Gown dapat kay Miss Venezuela or Miss India... Yun lang... Haayy!! I don't believe Miss World is catching up kasi sobrang boring ng Miss World. Wala pang parade of nations or swimsuit.
Regarding naman sa MU venue, I'll go for Mauritius nga- very different. Nakakasuka na sa Puerto Rico, mga bakaw pa sila. But I would say the best in long gown was supposed to be kay Miss Greece, even if her gown was simple sobrang galing niya magdala!!! But I think denise deserved the crown and not all of the awards- kasi makikita mo sa kanya ang determination na gusto niya manalo. Miss Greece ata won her title less than a month before going to Puerto Rico so magaling nga siya- natural beauty queen siya. Saka maganda evening gown competition this year- runway style saka astig yung music.

Uhhmm... Actually, I was impressed with the latest edition of Miss World (in Sun City) kasi makikita mo talaga yung improvement from previous editions eh... Maganda nga yung Stage Design ngayon, yung Venue sobrang Ok at yung mga places na pinuntahan ng mga delegates to shoot their Swimsuits... And mas behave nga ngayon si Jerry Springer... Yung quality ng candidates sobrang Ok din... Kaya ok sa kin ngayon ang Miss World... Feeling ko nga... Miss World ang mananalong Best Pageant of the year and Best Venue...
Lam mo, kaya walang swimsuit segment ang Miss World sa coronation night kasi marami ang umaangal... kesyo para daw silang "karne" na pinapapila ng organizers para ibenta sa mga judges... Oh well, may point sila dun...
At saka sarap panoorin nun sa Miss World, 90+ contestants wearing their national costumes... Diba parang ang ganda tignan!
Uhhmm... Seoul, South Korea as the venue for next year's pageant? Wala pa naman pong confirmation... At pinagpipilian pa nila ang mga cities bidding to host the next year's pageant. Pero maganda pa rin talaga sa Mauritius! Sobrang waaahh!! The best!
I really dont think Denise deserved the title... It was rigged! Parang hello? Obvious naman eh... The crown should have been place on the head of Ms Greece (Evelina Papantoniou) or Miss Venezuela (Eva Ekvall)... Ayun... Haayy... Basta Puerto Rico = MADAYA!
Hey, heto nga pala yung pic ni Evelina Papantoniou as she was proclaimed Global Beauties' Sexiest Woman Alive!!
First Runner-Up: Leslie Turner (Miss Ireland-Universe)
Second Runner-Up: Oleksandra Nikolayenko (Miss Ukraine-World)

My source informed me that Seoul, South Korea will host Miss Universe 2002. Unless this is confirmed in the following days to come, let us all stick to what has been posted at Global Beauties that Mauritius is all set to host next year's beauty pageant.
Reports have it that the Miss World pageant will travel to Puerto Rico next year and then to China in 2003. These are all merely reports... none of which are 100% sure unless confirmed by MWO officials.

thanks. But can you also ask her when is Bb. Pilipinas 2002? Don't you think that they should choose the winner early? So there is more time for our girls to prepare at di tayo maging kulelat? And do you agree that Bb. Pilipinas and a lot of people there are still stuck in a time warp? Too obsolete already?
It's kinda odd about Korea, di siya nakalist sa mga countries that are vying to host Miss U 2002. You mean Korea knows it already but di pa formally announced to keep the suspense?

No problem. I already asked her and she said that the deadline for the submission of applications is on the second week of January 2002, which means that the pageant will take place probably on the second Saturday of March. The screening itself is a tedious task and it certainly will take a lot of time.
I was also shocked when she said Korea. Actually, before I asked her I already informed her about Mauritius and the other cities vying for the hosting of MU2002. When she said Korea, I didn't bother to argue with her anymore. She furthermore stressed that we must select an Oriental-looking chinita representative because that would surely impress the judges in Seoul. She referred to 1988, when 4 Oriental Asians made it to the Final 5. MU1988 was held in Taipei as we all know, and that year's winner was also an Asian.

off topic pero.....
talagang madaya!!!!months have passed na pero im still gritting my teeth. i mean, sige na, home crowd advantage pero having 2 puerto rican judges na magasawa (d torres n m anthony) solid vote for puerto rico candidate na yan! grabe! ang daya! and as ever, palpak lagi ang translator (kahit naman sa ms world palpak e) actually wala pang pageant na hindi palpak ang translator! :verymad:
ok..to answer the question...may kanya kanyang uniqueness *** pageant eh...sa ms universe syempre mas renowned (para sa akin) ms world mas exotic, mas innovative, mas out of this place ang judging (sa totoo lang ha!) kung gusto mo hindi mahigh blood, mas good bet ang ms u pero kung gusto mo ng surprise element sabay kamot ulo, ms world...dahil classic tlaga *** hinanakit ko nung nanalong 2nd princess si ruffa g. grabe, pag nakita mo sa dyaryo (e d pa uso ang colored prints ng newspaper nun) talagang naging shadow *** winner at *** 1st r.u.....oooppss racist remark na to :( pero what im pointing is, she can really win naman pero i think that time e medyo issue *** pagiging free ng south africa from apartheid becoz of efforts of mendela (mendala, mandela...alin ba ang alin  )so talagang mas nabenta *** beauty nung nanalo :D
wala akong reklamo sa ms world this year except for the choosing of semifinals na ewan ko kung pano napunta *** japayuki looking na ms russia. deserving manalo si ms world kase she hit the right mark - sya lang nagsabi ng wanna help ekek...*** ms universe  ako dyan! pretty nga si ms p.rico pero naman naman....

Jensie,
thanks. The question is, san nakuha nila Zora yung info? And can you tell her even if she wasn't able to make top 10, she was REALLY deserving to represent us in Puerto Rico- no regrets there. Along with Nina also. And can you suggest that hoping they would improve the girls walking skills, I mean tingnan mo lang kung paano maglakad si Miss Greece.... natulala ako. Ang graceful niya and very suave. I mean our girls need talaga to feel comfortable and have this confidence. Panoorin mo lang and mga models sa "F" channel matututo ka nang maglakad eh.
cathybee,
I know Miss Universe this year sucks pero mas ok siya compared sa Miss World- at least binalik ang national costumes. Sobrang boring pa ang Miss World!!! Denise's win is water under the bridge now. Move on na tayo, saka malapit na kaya matapos ang reign niya and we should be looking forward next year. I think she was really deserving of the crown, iba ang stage presence niya eh, saka may personality at halatang pinaghirapan niya. What I don't like is that binakaw niya lahat ng awards except the Congeniality and the Best in National Costume. We know na if Denise didn't win, malamang mag amok ang mga latinos na yun... remember what happened nung 1993 sa Mexico? So they wouldn't settle less than the crown itself na. But next year it's entirely a different story, they would get their just deserves and maraming bansa ang gaganti sa kanila... hehehe

I really don't know where Zora got her info regarding Korea, but she really, really sounded so sure and certain when she narrated this to me.
Don't you worry because I already told her long before that she really was deserving to represent us in MU2001. She also confessed that she originally planned to join Bb. Pilipinas 2002, but she realized that she would be 25 then (too old already because that is the age limit for Bb. Pilipinas), which is why she joined Bb. Pilipinas 2001 instead. It's interesting to think of what could have happened had she joined a year later...
Regarding Miss Greece, I was also impressed by the way she carried herself. The very first time I saw her funshot pic posted, I knew that she would put on a good show during the finals. And she did! Regarding the way she walked, I believe that was very, very natural-- it seems as if she learned it all by herself and no pageant consultant or organizer taught it to her. Her body is also natural-- it obviously was not molded in the gym or something...she was born WITH IT.

Duda naman ako na sa Korea ang next pageant! Unang-una, kandidata lang si Zora at wala siyang koneksyon sa Miss Universe Organization. Pangalawa, nung nag commence na ang Miss Universe in Bayamon, Puerto Rico at nagkaroon sila ng party for the winner... Donald Trump announced that the next edition will still be in Puerto Rico because of the same time zone and Puerto Rico's gonna shoulder everything... Pangatlo, kung hindi man sa Puerto Rico ang next edition... Bakit walang KOREA sa list of cities/countries na nagbibid for the next year's pageant? HHhmm... Opinion ko lang naman po. Thanks!

Well, that's the point of it all-- the fact na she's a candidate, she undeniably has a big, big "edge" kahit papaano over us ordinary people on inside information about tidbits and news regarding Miss Universe.
It is TRUE that Donald Trump announced Puerto Rico as the host again for next year. But why would Mauritius and the other 4 countries suddenly appear in the limelight? This only shows that there indeed is a possibility that other countries proved more attractive than PR after all. Anything could have happened between that Coronation Ball on May 11 (when the announcement was made and the present month) up to the present month which is December.
It is true though, that I haven't read any article so far in the net or anywhere about this Korea hosting... which is of course suspicious because it's already December and MU is just around the corner. Well, maybe it's meant to be a big surprise for everyone.

Inside information could easily be passed within this "network" of her's.

No, there won't be any confirmation regarding the Bb. Pilipinas 2002 candidates until the official roster has been posted. Those reports we read at Mabuhay Pageants Messageboard are good tidbits but then again they are just speculations and reports until officially confirmed. I just don't know the date for this. From a field of 150-200 hopefuls, these figures will just be trimmed down to between 25-30 official candidates. This usually takes place during the last week of January or first week of February. By then, the Bb. Pilipinas official website has been revised and updated for the 2002 batch.
Regarding Miss Greece again, she really did well in the evening gown competition... It's a good decision of her wearing the same gown again for the finals. It really gave her a big, big advantage because she really glowed onstage. I think it will take a long time before Greece puts on a good showing again in Miss Universe. The last time they did it was in 1994, and as we all know, Rea Toutounzi ranked 2nd in the prelims... to think she was only crowned Miss Greece '94 barely a week before proceeding to Manila. And by the way, it was Ruffa who crowned her during the Star Hellas Universe pageant in Athens during the 2nd week of April 1994.
Ruffa was really disappointed with her bagging of the Bb. Pilipinas World '93 crown. With this, she was determined to do well in Miss World '93. This was also the time when then Senator Ernesto Maceda's Expose on alleged Brunei beauties exploded. Ruffa left for Sun City barely a month after that fiasco. The next thing we knew, she was standing tall and proud representing our country well in the MW finals. She has stated for a lot of times her dream of becoming Miss Universe. In fairness to Dindi, she was stunning during the Bb. Pilipinas pageant. Again, we don't know what happened to her in Mexico City. She lost her touch.

Miss Greece 94 Rea Toutounzi placed first in the preliminaries despite the fact that she was crowned barely a month prior to the Miss Universe Pageant.

And in reaction regarding TRump saying he wants it again in Puerto Rico, siya ang nagsabi nun and it wasn't the MU Organization- informal lang yun. There wasn't any formal announcement from the company. Saka likely they would host Miss World next year kaya malabo, and hearing from other message boards, Miss U 2001 did not gather enough revenue as what is expected.
And to jensie,
Sino pa ang mga naging close ni Zora sa Miss U? naging close ba siya kay Miss India? ano ugali niya? And ano ang personality ni Denise, Eva, and the others? NA curious ako.

Ahh... ok. Pero Trump is the owner of that company diba? So what Trump wants, Trump gets. Anyways, I heard that Miss World will be held somewhere in South America (Chile? or Brazil?) not sure... Hay naku, if its gonna be held in Puerto Rico... expect that Agbani Darego's successor would be Puerto Rican...

Ang alam kong close ni Zora is Jo-Ann Strauss, Miss South Africa. Both are aspiring lawyers. And her roommate was Miss Malaysia. Uhhmm.... I don't think Zora was 'friends' with Celina Jaitley. I also read in Zora's Global Beauties interview that she's getting along with Eva Ekvall since the latter helped the former with the training in Venezuela. Siguro mabait si Eva. Si Denise parang approachable... Friendly din siguro. Sana nakuha din ni Denise yung Miss Congeniality Award!

Zora told me her best friend is Miss South Africa Jo Ann Strauss.
However, she said she voted for Miss US Virgin Islands Lisa Wynne for the title of Miss Photogenic. Yes, her roommate was Miss Malaysia Mei Chin Tung but she got along better with black contestants.
She also considered former Miss Venezuela Eva Ekvall a good friend not only because they met in "La Quinta" (Osmel's beauty palace in Caracas) but also because they had a lot in common. Both got along very well throughout the duration of their training before heading to Bayamon.
Zora didn't deny the fact that Miss India Celina Jaitley was sort of an "airhead". Sorry I had to use here the term she used. Celina was kind daw but she had this certain superiority complex that made her isolated from most of the contestants, most especially the Latin Americans. Most were uncomfortable because of her mannerisms and attitude. However, Zora stressed that even if Celina was like that, she was the only Asian candidate she was probably closest to.
Zora also told me she met Denise Quiñones for a number of times even before she was crowned Miss Universe. She was kind and accommodating and spoke perfect American English. According to Zora, Denise had everything MUI was looking for this year-- the typical Miss Universe stereotype: with big hair, perfect smile, sexy aura, and bubbly personality. But Zora did not discount the fact that Evelina could have been a better Miss Universe. Zora said that Evelina was best whenever she smiled without showing her teeth. It gave the audience and viewers an air of mystery and fascination over her beauty.

Yes, we know Imee Martinez. Zora told me she will still talk to Imee regarding Bb. Pilipinas 2002. She told me that Imee is a strong, strong contender not only for Bb. Pilipinas, but Miss Universe as well. Zora told me that she is probably the only person Imee would consult and listen to regarding her joining again next year.

thank you so much jensie, mas tumaas tingin ko kay Eva. And to think Miss Venezuelas are known to be competitive talaga and medyo with airs. It was really nice to hear na maganda personality niya. Di na ko nagulat kay Celina kasi (I ain't being racist but being observant lang), I think naging ganun sila ka feeling superior after they had won lots of beauty titles- saka nature ata ng mga Indians ang feeling superior. I miss the days talaga na there were Indian girls like Sushmita- unang tingin mo lang she has no airs and and has a very bubbly personality- at hindi sila feeling na sila na ang mananalo. Makikita mo naman sa mga Miss U 94 tapes na ang cheerful niya sobra, and she wasn't expecting na mananalo pa siya. She is indeed a pioneer and waaaay better than Lara.
BTW, I would like to start something to discuss over: Do you think it is right for our girls to be dressed by Foreign Desingers? I mean is that a major slap in the face satin? I could name one world class Pinoy designer who could really dress our girls and has PURE TALENT- Inno Sotto. Napa elegant talaga ng mga gawa niya. Simple but very elegant, I could not explain it in words. I mean it was good enough na rin that Zora's costume was 1st runner up, but I think it wasn't made by a Pinoy designer. We could do better, it wasn't Filipino enough. MAslalo naman sa costume ni Nina last year- that must have been the biggest insult satin- what was that???? I dunno, that is what i don't like about Stella, wala talaga siyang believe satin mga Pinoy- love your own kung baga. And not to mention some of the girls weren't able to wear their preferred gowns and they were forced to wear those truly obsolete Bb. Pilipinas Boutique clothes (blech).

Thanks to Renuka Balsubramanium for this article.
Confessions of a Beauty Queen
After competing in the Miss Universe pageant, local entrant Jaime Teo dishes the dirt on the pageant, Puerto Rico and prissy competitors.
Co-hosts Naomi Campbell and Elle McPherson: "Both of them were very snobbish and kept to themselves. Backstage everyone was fawning all over Naomi and she was ordering contestants not to take her picture."
Crowning glory: "Miss Puerto Rico deserved to win. She did have an advantage, though, because the pageant was held in her hometown where she's a huge celebrity. We'd do appearances at shopping malls and over 25,000 of her fans would turn up. It was like we were touring with Britney Spears."
Ricky Martin: "Here he was backstage, surrounded by the most beautiful women in the world, and he didn't seem all that interested" (Why aren't we surprised?)
Backstage *****iness: "Miss Israel, Miss USA and Miss Venezuela all spoke to you with their noses in the air. I don't think Miss USA deserved to make the finals. During the prelims, she tripped on her evening gown four times."
Backstage Buddies: "The Asian contestants stuck together. I shared a room with Miss Taiwan and she was a lot of fun. She'd done a few of these before, so she advised me on what to wear. Miss Switzerland was fun and Miss Italy was crazy!"
Sweet Slumber: "We'd be lucky to get five hours of sleep a night. We had to be at breakfast by 7 am, so that meant we had to get up at least an hour beforehand to put on make-up and get ready. Most nights we would have functions to attend until 1 am.Most of us ended up quite sick."

Yup! I agree with you. Gone were the days when we would enjoy the humility and simplicity of Indian representatives to Miss Universe. I agree that Sushmita was humble and not very expecting of her victory here in Manila. I read an article in an Indian messageboard posted by Sushmita's mother narrating their experience here in the Philippines in May of 1994. She narrated that during the final dress rehearsal, (a day before the coronation) Sushmita was not called as a semi-finalist during the dry-run. From that moment on, she lost hope and did not really feel she had a chance at all. She was depressed and took that rehearsal thing seriously. But when May 21 came, she was the first to be called in the Top 10 and she was so shocked. This is a concrete example of humility that we are rarely going to find in Indian representatives in the years to come.
Regarding naman your topic of evening gowns and foreign designers...this is a very controversial issue. It is obvious that BPCI does not seem to learn from its past mistakes. It's true that they are "stuck" in an obsolete time warp. They should be open to newer ideas. I think we should still stick to local designers. I agree with Inno Sotto as your top choice. He bagged most of the major awards in the recently-concluded MEGA Fashion Awards sponsored by Roehr Philippines and MEGA Magazine of course. He was successful in combining that Western look with our native roots. I can't understand why Madame Araneta can't see this. Well, maybe she wants to stick to her native culture more. (which is Colombian culture of course) This is a very crucial topic that must not be taken for granted especially by those in power...

I am not really sure about this. I hope Imee really gives in to Zora's request. She really deserves to join again.
Nevertheless here is a brief trivia about girls I know of who joined more than once in Bb. Pilipinas.
1. Sovietskaya Bacud- she joined Bb. Pilipinas 1994 and made it to the top 15. She joined again in 1996 and won 1st runner-up.
2. Jewel Lobaton- joined Bb. Pilipinas 1995 and placed in the top 15. Joined again in 1998 and won 1st runner-up but as fate had put it, was crowned Bb. Pilipinas Universe a month after Tisha Silang gave up her crown due to technical reasons.
3. Abbygale Arenas- joined Bb. Pilipinas 1994 and won 1st runner-up. She joined again in Bb. Pilipinas 1997 and won Bb. Pilipinas Universe. She ranked 11th overall in Miss Universe and also won the Philippines' 4th Miss Photogenic title in the said pageant.
4. Jamine Esperat- joined both Bb. Pilipinas 1999 and 2000 and failed to enter the semi-finals for both years.
5. Gemma Heaton- joined Bb. Pilipinas 2000 and made it to the top 10. Joined again in Bb. Pilipinas 2001 but did not qualify for the semi-finals.
Let's just hope and pray that things will go right for Imee Martinez if ever she decides to join again next year. =)

As much as we want this to happen...it's impossible. BPCI is already an institution that is not easy to replace. I don't think any party can buy the Miss U franchise from BPCI. However if this indeed happens, it will be a private firm with lots and lots of money and influence.

This is a very interesting article. Thank you for posting it here.
Zora also told me that they had to wake up early (probably at 6 in the morning) just to take a shower, put on make-up, and do every necessary preparations before breakfast. With the international and local press scattered like ants everywhere, nobody surely wanted to be caught looking like a zombie. Zora also mentioned this dinner wherein they all went home around 1 or 2 in the morning. It was very tiring daw pero every minute was worth it.
Contrary to Miss Singapore Jamie Teo who narrated that most of the Asian candidates stuck together, Zora enjoyed the company of black contestants. Aside from Misses South Africa and US Virgin Islands, Zora also had the chance to hang out and bond with Miss Nigeria Agbani Darego.

hello regulars!!!
VERY emotional when they lose/don't make it to the top ten (i could just remember the mexicans!)
as regarding sa mga ugali nila, feeling ko talaga ay medyo showbiz si celina. sa india pa lang e vj na siya sa mtv india before she joined femina. and yes, i love the femina batch of '94! sush and ash both won (i bet kilala nyo na sila, kayo pa!) such a winner batch....mala batch nina cara subijano....
si denise naman ay mukha talagang mabait at poised na poised nga lang....pati siya mukhang di nagulat nang siya ang tinawag na miss universe....she is beautiful talaga, but she won in p.r., leaving a bad taste in every beauty pageant fan's mouth.....too bad miss south africa wasn't appreciated in miss world, e di sana both miss u and miss w won in their respective homelands di ba! :D

more info on madhu in Tom's Page of Miss Universe Mania...but i guess you already know that as you asound like a fan of hers....
Altwegg:
info? the only info i could think of now (actually historical trivia) ... the judge who stood in evangeline pascual's way of being the first filipina miss world was actor gregory peck who was allegedly a racist..........
Uhhmm... I thought the girl in your avatar is Madhu Sapre. Uhhmm... I'm not really a fan of hers. And I'm not fond of Bollywood actresses.
I'd have to admit that I like Aishwarya Rai (the most beautiful MISS WORLD accdg to Global Beauties), Lara Dutta (articulate), Diya Mirza (beautiful) and Priyanka Chopra. I don't like Celina Jaitley, Sara Corner, and Yukta Mookhey. And uhhmm... I find Gul Panag's face very charming. Sweet girl.
Sa venezuelans naman, I like Claudia Moreno (natural beauty), Eva Ekvall (regal, beautiful), Carolina Indriago, and Alicia Machado. I hate Cynthia Lander!!!
Sa americans naman, I like Lynette Cole (the abs) and Kandace Krueger (great interview, but she looks old).
Sa Puerto Ricans, I like Dayanara Torres and Brenda Liz Lopez. Denise Quinones is ok (I just hate the fact that they rigged the pageant. Denise deserves her victory but not in her hometown. It was very obvious) and so is Isis Casalduc (ordinary!). Uhhmm... I dont know but I have this grudge against Puerto Ricans... lolz!
Sa Spanish delegates, I love these girls: Diana Nogueira (the body to die for), Helen Lindes Griffith (photogenic face), Eva Casals (dry but pretty nonetheless), Lorena Bernal (beautiful), Macarena Garcia (I loved the way she carried herself in MW 2001, and the gown, the sweet face!), and who else? Uhhmm... and oh Lorena Van Heerde (although I have not seen her compete internationally, I've seen photos of her that convinced me that she's a stunner!) Viva Espana!
Sa Mexicans, WALA! I dont appreciate Mexican beauties that much... and I so hate the girl that Nina Alagao competed with? What's her name?
Uhhmm.... Sa Colombians, I like Carolina Gomez, Catalina Acosta, Andrea Noceti, Carolina Cruz, and Vanessa Mendoza (beautiful black lady, she looks more like a barbie to me!)
Uhhmm... I'd have to ask this to you guys. Do you think Miss Spain 2001 Lorena Van Heerde's goin to compete in Miss Universe 2002? I hope so because this girl is a stunner... She'll continue the semi-final streak for Spain. :D
That's all!

NO, as I said earlier Kuh Ledesma sat as a judge in Miss Universe 1991 when the pageant was held in Las Vegas, Nevada. Too bad she was not impressed at all by our country's representative Maria Lourdes "Alu" Gonzalez in that pageant. As we all know, Alu was the last minute replacement to resigned Bb. Pilipinas Universe Anjanette Abayari, who had to surrender her title due to citizenship reasons.

Probably because that was the period of the peak of her musical career both locally and in the US. Kuh has embarked on a number of concerts and muscial tours around the States during the early 90's and that's maybe how MUI noticed her and finally invited her to sit as a judge in MU91... and as we all know, MUI always goes for cultural diversity when selecting its judges for a particular year.

I agree with you. Cynthia was not very impressive at all (well, compared to Aura Zambrano or Norelys Rodriguez at least) when she was crowned Miss Venezuela... As we all know, what Osmel wants, Osmel gets whenever, whatever it takes. Cynthia is a second cousin of former Miss Universe Irene Saez. She grew up in the United States and reportedly speaks flawless American English.
But it's only December and MU is still in May... Osmel could still accomplish A LOT to improve or "reconstruct" his chosen representative to MU. Cynthia looks like a man probably because of her sharp features that traditionally pertain to masculinity at times. But didn't you notice her similarity (sort of) to Miss Venezuela 1997 Marena Bencomo? Maybe it's because of the hair and smile...

Yup, Global Beauties reported before the Lorena Ayala van Heerde will indeed represent Spain in MU2002. This means that the Miss España pageant will have to be held on a later date.
She was crowned Miss Spain in March 2001. Since she was only 17 at that time, she had to give up her title to her first runner-up Eva Siso Casals. Lorena was then scheduled to compete in Miss World this year since she was already 18 but again refused to. Her second runner-up Macarena Garcia Naranjo accepted the title. Lorena was finally handpicked to represent Spain in MU2002 and she accepted it... MATALINONG BATA! :)

Point of information:
Lorena Van Heerde DID NOT give up her title (Miss Spain 2001) to Eva Siso Casals or Macarena Garcia. Its just that Eva and Macarena were sent to this year's competitions. And that wouldn't affect the status of Lorena as Miss Spain 2001. Whether she competed or not, she'll still be the one to crown the next Miss Spain in 2002.

Question:
Venezuela has Distrito Capital, Trujillo, Tachira, Vargas, Portuguesa, Amazonas, Aragua, Barinas, Carabobo, Falcon, Apure, Costa Oriental, Guarico, Nueva Esparta, Cojedes, Bolivar, Peninsula Guajira, Anzoategui, Zulia, Miranda, Delta Amacuro, Monagas, Peninsula de Paraguana, Municipio Vargas, Dependencias Federales, Lara, Yaracuy, Merida, Sucre, Municipio Libertador, Departamento Vargas, etc etc...
And Colombia has Choco, Valle, Atlantico, Santander, Huila, Cartagena, Bolivar, Cauca, Valle del Cauca, Cundinamarca, etc etc...
What are these? Names of cities? States? Provinces? And does this mean that these girls really hailed from that particular place? Or are just awarded to them? Or what? Uhhmm...
Sana ganyan din dito sa Bb. Pilipinas, Mutya ng Pilipinas, and Miss Philippines-Earth. Mas exciting diba? And makikita talaga natin kung saan parte ng bansa may pinakamaraming winners. And sana provinces yung irerepresent... Provincial winners will qualify for the National finals. Tapos may sashes sila... hindi yung puro numbers... Ang pangit tingnan.. Tapos, sana isa lang yung winner ng Bb. Pilipinas tapos runners-up na lahat. Wala lang... wishful thinking... :D

Hi baby_boi!
Everything you enumerated under Venezuela are called STATES, while those you enumerated under Colombia are called DEPARTMENTS. It does not necessarily mean that these candidates really hail from any particular state or department for that matter...
For example, look into the Venezuelan map and you won't find a state named Costa Oriental... According to Details magazine, (December 2000 issue) Osmel only made it up because the more states in his pageant, the more contestants, and therefore more profit. (Usually there are 26 contestants every year.) Osmel merely designates a candidate into a particular state and eventually she is entered as an official candidate in the pageant "supposedly" representing that state. It does not necessarily mean that she literally hails from that state.
I am not really sure if the same thing goes for other national pageants. Well, maybe it does in some cases...
Your suggestions concerning Bb. Pilipinas, Mutya Ng Pilipinas, and Miss Philippines Earth are all good ones. I believe these matters have been brought into the attention of concerned pageant officials a long time ago but no concrete action has really been undertaken to address it.
I remember a time when Mutya Ng Pilipinas went regional on its search for candidates. I remember reading in the newspapers candidates from different regions crowned as Mutya Ng Davao, Mutya Ng Pampanga, Mutya Ng Ilocos and even Mutya Ng Pilipinas - North America... and once every regional winner has been crowned, they all gathered in Manila for the crowning of Mutya Ng Pilipinas. I think this was in 1997 or 1998 if I am not mistaken... Budget constraint will be the #1 impediment to this proposal of yours.

Hello JENSIE_G!
I see... I thought these are cities or provinces in Venezuela and Colombia. And that these girls really hailed from that particular place. Thanks for the info. :D
I know that in Spain and Puerto Rico, its a different story. Like for example, Utuado is represented by a local girl, Isis Casalduc in the Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2002. And Denise Quinones represented her hometown Lares in Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2001. In Spain naman, Helen Lindes Griffith is from Gran Canaria so she represented the island in the Miss Spain 2000.
The same goes for Miss USA, Brazil, France, Indonesia pageants. Sana ganyan din dito sa Pinas. I also know that in India, the candidates are not designated with numbers and sashes. First names lang nung candidate ang ginagamit. Parang redundant kasi eh pag laging, Candidate no. 8, Candidate no. 10, Candidate no. 1, Candidate no. 13... Parang hello? Ang baduy! Mas maganda kung Miss Davao, Miss Cebu, Miss La Union, Miss Ilocos Norte... Diba? Agree ba kayo?
I'd just like to ask if the girls wore sashes during the Mutya ng Pilipinas tilt (97-98?)? Or if they were given numbers na naman?
I know na mahirap na magkaroon ng regional search for the local pageants. And not all regional winners are stunners... So I think magandang mag designate na lang din tayo ng candidates for each province or region like what Venezuela and Colombia is doing. Ano sa tingin niyo? :D

agree ako kay baby_boi. it would be fun to have a nation-wide search. para talagang represented lahat ng provinces. i mean, what are all those pageants tuwing festivals for di ba? tsaka it would also be a good way to promote local modelling industries. plus added tourist attraction din yun di ba? at para na rin madiffuse ang concentration ng beauties sa maynila. huwag naman sila matakot na baka barok ang provincial candidates kasi i bet mangingibabaw ang regional pride ng mga taga probinsya at igo-groom nila ang mga pambato nila, kesa halos lahat ng candidiates taga maynila at walang masyandong nagtatrain sa kanila. wadya think jensie!!!????

Ako naman, di ako aasa muna na mag karoon ng regional representatives ang Bb. kasi they REALLY do need to shape up muna. I mean time warp talaga sila eh, napaglumaan na- the pageant isn't hip enough tapos they won't even let the girls choose their own gowns. I think revamping Bb is nearer to reality. Sana kunin na ni Lord si Madame Stella... hehehe what an insult a Colombian running our pageant- wala naman yung believe sa Pinoy eh. Kaya hanggang thank you girls nalang tayo, that's the reason why a lot of our Filipinas are hesitant to join.
REgarding sa Femina, sayang sa January I won't be able to watch it kasi tinanggal na ang Sony, anong cable ba meron? Yeah the best batch was 2000- but if to choose between Lara and Sushmita- Sushmita pa rin ako... hehehe wala nga lang siyang avatar eh. hehehe

Even though these Mutya '97 and '98 candidates were regional winners in their own rights, I remember they were still given number tags and not sashes. Regarding Bb. Pilipinas naman, I have observed that the "lucky" number tag is #14. Charlene and Nina Ricci had that number tag when they competed and they won the top plum. =)
I agree with you that Miss Davao, Miss La Union...etc etc sounds more appealing. Number tags label the candidates as merely "items" or "commodities"... "Miss" titles sound more professional and formal. Aside from Bb. Pilipinas, other national pageants that use number tags for their candidates are Miss World Venezuela, Miss Jamaica World, Miss Tanzania, Miss Israel, Star Hellas Greece, Miss Hong Kong, Miss Korea, Miss Thailand Universe and World. I know there are still more but I can't specifically remember the rest.
The things you mentioned above regarding Isis Casalduc and Helen Lindes are true. They indeed hailed from the place they were representing in their national pageants. I think this is also true for Alicia Machado. She entered her national pageant as Miss Yaracuy, and she is indeed from the city of Maracay, which is in Yaracuy. She was an exception though.

It is indeed fun. But our local pageants have been tightening their belts due to financial constraints. If ever this happens, low budget naman at obvious na tinipid. Panget.
There are exceptions though. Remember the Miss Philippines Centennial pageant of 1998? They had this regional search, right? Then during the final coronation night, the top winners were awarded Miss Luzon, Miss Visayas, and Miss Mindanao titles. The main plum was the Miss Philippines Centennial title itself. I think the pageant was successful in a way.

Oo nga no? 100 years magrereign ang Miss Philippine Centennial!! Grabe, its got to be the longest reign of a beauty queen in our history. Uhhmm...
Yung first runner-up daw? I'm not sure bout this... Pero bakit? Ok na si Isis... Wag na nilang palitan!
Lara, baka naman meron webcast ang Femina Miss India this year. Kasi sabi mo diba wala nang Sony sa mga cable dito sa Pinas? Sa totoo lang, di ko wish manood ng Femina... Ang haba ng palabas nila... Mamumuti ang mata ko!
Chez-o, agree ako na mukhang malakas si Lorena Van Heerde this year... And malakas din naman ang Colombia this year ah? Maganda siya, payat, at kakaiba! Ang mahina lang this year ay Venezuela! wish ko lang di sila maka pasok sa top ten this year nang matauhan yan si Osmel na yan!
For next year's Binibini naman, I hope Imee Martinez joins again. May potential siya at matalino. Si 2tay Maristela din may X-factor! Haayy.... Kelan kaya ulit tayo magkakaroon ng top calibre winners? IMHO, the best batch of winners: 1994 and 1996!

Baby-boi, yep tama ka nga saksakan ng tagal ang Miss India!!!!! Dami pa kasing mga intermission crap eh. Daming sumasayaw pa na mga Bombay... hehehe I remember nung January the show started at 11 pm Phil time, it ended at 5 AM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pero naaliw ako kasi every year yun ang sinusubaybayan ko... hehehe may silbi pala yung channel na yun sa mga non-Indians like us kahit once a year.
Regarding Puerto Rico, maybe "cow droppings" lang yun. Somebody is just spreading rumors lang. We should not believe everything we read. Saka my early favorites for Miss Universe are, I like Spain, South Africa and would you believe I like Angola also!!! Cayman Island has a nice smile, i watched her sa Miss World. And my favorite as for now is MISS DOMINICAN REPUBLIC!!!!!!! Colombia, ok lang but I prefer her 1st runner up eh 5'10 ata yun sayang. Canada din may potential. But there are more countries we have to wait for.

Yup I know. I'm already worried. 2002 is just around the corner and I still haven't seen any confirmation or at least reports updating us about Korea's hosting. If I get to meet up with Zora this Christmas break I will surely ask her everything about this issue.
And what happened to Mauritius? There hasn't been any development or follow-up report after that news regarding its hosting spread in Global Beauties.
I would also love to see Korea host MU2002. For a change naman.

Anyways, correct ka jan Lara. Sobrang nakakasuka na sa Puerto Rico. At ang balita ay hindi si Isis Casalduc ang magrerepresent sa Puerto Rico. Yung first runner-up daw? I'm not sure bout this... Pero bakit? Ok na si Isis... Wag na nilang palitan!
Lara, baka naman meron webcast ang Femina Miss India this year. Kasi sabi mo diba wala nang Sony sa mga cable dito sa Pinas? Sa totoo lang, di ko wish manood ng Femina... Ang haba ng palabas nila... Mamumuti ang mata ko!
Chez-o, agree ako na mukhang malakas si Lorena Van Heerde this year... And malakas din naman ang Colombia this year ah? Maganda siya, payat, at kakaiba! Ang mahina lang this year ay Venezuela! wish ko lang di sila maka pasok sa top ten this year nang matauhan yan si Osmel na yan!
For next year's Binibini naman, I hope Imee Martinez joins again. May potential siya at matalino. Si 2tay Maristela din may X-factor! Haayy.... Kelan kaya ulit tayo magkakaroon ng top calibre winners? IMHO, the best batch of winners: 1994 and 1996!
:D
Hi there again. I think it has long been Femina Miss India's tradition of having a webcast. I think last year meron... I have been hearing reports of a certain Thai channel (I dunno what Cable) that broadcasts big time pageants like MU live on the dot. I dunno what the channel's name is but one thing I'm sure about is that hindi delayed ang telecast at konti ang commercial breaks.
You might be forgetting about Miss Mexico Erika Cruz. She's the first ever woman of color to win the Nuestra Belleza Mexico crown. This is an advantage for her for sure. Just like her, Miss Colombia Vanessa Mendoza will also be the first woman of color to represent Colombia in Miss Universe. I think they'll both do good.
Regarding Imee naman, Zora will still talk to her. She will do everything possible to convince her to join again because "sayang" daw talaga. Zora also told me that Maricar Balagtas should join again because she'll automatically win any of the "Big 3" titles of Bb. Pilipinas. However, she already won Miss Globe 2001 and therefore is not permitted anymore to join.

I think she would have put on a good show in MU or MW because of her stunning chameleon looks, height and experience advantage. She was too old na kasi eh... Sayang...

I have a feeling the one posted in Globalbeauties MB about Puerto Rico is a bluff... keep your fingers crossed.
note:
Femina Miss India has updated their website already and you could see the 26 Miss India contestants. I hope they could choose a good rep for Miss U but I hope India doesn't win next year.

My faves for next year: Spain, Colombia! Di ako masyadong nagagandahan kay Vanessa Carreira, Miss South Africa. Miss Dominican Republic is exotic at sexy... nice legs! Pero I doubt if she's gonna crack the top ten. Yung first runner-up ni Vanessa Mendoza baka sa Miss International natin makita. Hhmm... Canada? di ako nagagandahan. sobrang hyped na si Neelam Verna. Di naman deserving. What do you guys think of Miss France who hails from Lyon? IMHO, maganda rin siya... pero mas patok siguro ang France kung yung Miss Cote d'Azur yung nanalo. Anyways, ganun talaga.... bow!

IMHO, Joey Mead would fare better in Miss World. Kasi unpredictable ang top ten ng Miss World. Sa Miss Universe kasi three days before the finals halos nahuhulaan na ng lahat kung sino ang papasok sa top ten. Pero kung sa Miss Universe this year nag compete si Joey Mead, im sure may chance siya sa top ten. Siguradong talbog si Miss Russia and Miss Israel kung ganun. Sayang, na disqualify pa siya.

Joey was 26? or 27? nung nag file siya ng application for this year's Binibini. Eh yung qualification ng Binibini hanggang 27 din... So puede pa siya diba? Puede pa din siya sa Miss Universe... she's too old for Miss World and Miss International. I just dont understand why they chose to disqualify her. Maybe because nag protesta yung ibang candidates. Kasi alam nilang ligwak sila kay Joey Mead.
From the missuniverse.com FAQs
Are there age requirements delegates must meet?
A: Yes. As of 1993, MISS UNIVERSE® and MISS USA® delegates must be at least 18 years of age and under 27 years of age by February 1st in the year they compete in the national competition. MISS TEEN USA® candidates must be at least 15 and under 19 years of age by July 1st in the year they compete in the national competition.

Thank you for posting this. The age limit for Bb. Pilipinas is 25.
For Miss World I think it is also 25 and for Miss International it's 23.
The oldest contestant I know who competed in Miss Universe is Miss Uruguay 1994 Leonora Dibueno. She was 27 when she competed here in Manila.

Neha
Tina
Elitra
Ankita

REgarding sa webcast, ok lang sakin yun!!! hehehe mamumuti nga lang mata ko. hehehe Pero sayang talaga kasi I want to record din yun eh- minus the song and dance. But di ako masyado believe sa mga candidates this year. I mean sa picture parang walang standout. Maybe they're better sa tv.

Yes, ano pa nga ba...? Laro-laro lang nga as you said yourself. Bb. Pilipinas is good at that. Proven na yan through time. Ilang buhay na ang nasira dahil sa inefficiency nila on handling controversial issues including technicalities.
It's always flashed in the TV and advertised in the newspapers everytime new Bb. Pilipinas pageant seasons are being launched that the required age limit is between 17-25 years old... Aside from this, potential candidates must be at least 5'5" in height, must be at least a highschool graduate, must be of good moral character, must have a residency in the Philippines of at least 6 months prior to the contest, and must be, of course, Filipino citizen.

Jensie_G,
Have you talked already to Zora about the MU 2002 venue? Well anyway I agree na sayang si Zora. But a friend of mine from the US, also Pinoy, was able to go to Puerto Rico and narecord niya ang Miss U 2001 prelims then he gave me a copy. I was able to watch it and honestly when I saw Zora in swimsuit and gown, she lacked the x-factor. Medyo hirap siya maglakad sa gown niya and di niya kayang dalhin sarili niya. Sayang talaga... I think that is what is lacking with our girls. Kulang talaga sa confidence and they don't know how to carry themselves- they're not comfortable with their sexuality- naks!!! hehehe pang Miss U!!! hehehe

Nope, I have not spoken to her yet. But I am hopeful that I will anytime within this week before she proceeds to Baguio for Christmas.

Back to Zora first, whne my friend watched the prelims sa Puerto Rico, he told me na nadismay siya kay Zora sa gown. And for those who have the Miss U 2001 tape, nung evening gown competition you would see Zora with her long beautiful hair down- sana ganun nalang ginawa niya nung prelims. Natulala ako din kasi ang ganda niya nun eh. Zora I guess, in my opinon kulang lang sa projection during that time- but no regret nevertheless for representing us.
Since everyone of us medyo hesitant regarding Puerto Rico hosting MU 2002 I'll display this post written by somebody- actually mayron nga siyang sense!!!! We should not react and emotional about the situation!!!
Don't worry - Just because PR is hosting MU'02 doesn't mean PR will win any prize
Cool it, guys! So you're worried that having PR as host country means that all prizes are in the bag for Isis Casalduc (or whoever ends up representing PR in MU'02)??? Well, how about a little history lesson, my friends. PR hosted MU in 1972 - an era when Puerto Ricans were still going gah-gah for this pageant, in the wake of Marisol's win in 1970.
And how did Miss PR 1972, Barbara Torres, fare in MU '72? She didn't make top 12 (the number of semis in those days) or even Miss Congeniality or Miss Anything. And was the public upset? NO WAY! Because, you see, Puerto Ricans are pragmatists & cheer their own when they know that the delegate stands a real chance of winning or placing. In other words, we have a little grey matter between our ears. Barbarita Torres was 'nice but no great shakes' and the media did not prop her up and there was no great expectation on the part of the public. The big favorites & 'media darlings' that year were Brazil (Rejane Costa), Venezuela (Maria Antonieta Campoli) & Portugal (Iris DosSantos) , with Philippines (Armi Crespo) & Australia (kerry Wells) also receiving positive publicity. Barbara Torres was not help up by a bunch of 'fanatic Puerto Rican Pageant Loonies' (as some of you term us) because all of us knew that she didn't stand a chance.
And Isis Casalduc is very much in the Barbara Torres mold - a sweet 'girl-next-door' gal with a great body but so-so face. We'll love her & be polite - but that is all.
On the other hand, Denise Quinones was a 'knockout beauty' from the get-go and would have been at the very top regardless of host venue. Perhaps the fact that PR was host venue spurred her to work all the harder to tone her figure & make changes? That much I'll concede that there was a connection between the venue & Denise's win...but foul play? No way.
Just wait & see - unless there is a miraculous transformation in Isis between now & then, you have nothing to worry about by having PR play hosts to Miss Universe 2002. Isis will receive our polite & loving applause, and so-so support from the local press, but nothing extraordinary. Just like the 1972 MU pageant.

Wow! bilib naman ako sa yo... pati shoes ng mga delegates napansin mo... :D I agree, missuniverse.com is the best of all pageant webbies. 4) Boring and incapable hosts! Sana ibalik yung nag host nung 1999 (Bob Goen ba yun?)

Hi to everyone, its been a while since I posted a message here, since I thought nawala na tong thread.
;)
Lots of interesting topics here from Miss U/World followers. I'd like to comment on some:
1. On Puerto Rico as MU 2002 host
- This is a wrong move on the part of Miss U organizers, people might lose interest on the pageant, look at Miss World, they keep coming back to South Africa, o ayan, even the locals are tired of it, didn't anyone notice that the arena this year for Ms. World was full of empty seats, baka mangyari yan sa Miss U.
- This might make the pageant boring, O ano, pakakantahin na namn si Ricky Martin o si Marc Anthony naman.
2. On Miss U
- Ever since Donald Trump became the producer of Miss U, pumangit na to, he took out lots of Miss U original portions like:
a. The Top 10 interview
b. The Parade of nations featuring the delegates prelims scores
c. The Little Sisters in the Evening Gown
- When the pageant was held here in 94, di pa nabili ni Trump kaya mganda pa, he bought it in 97 or 98 ata, dun nagsimula ang awful changes sa show
- When Brooke Lee won in 97, talagang nadismaya ako kasi di sya deserving sobra and to think na sa Hawaii ang pageant, lutong-luto, tanggap ko pa si Denise Q, kasi deserving naman sya, eventhough Hometown decision din ito.
3. On Miss World
- Every year, this pageant is hyped pero when you get to watch the live telecast, one gets dismayed kasi ang boring, ipakilala ba ang 96 or so contestants ng isa isa, then mamadaliin ang interview, tapos itatago pa yung mga finalist sa backstage pag i-a announce yung winner. And now, ano na namng pakulo to, may on line voting pa, para na syang hi-tech na Beauty contest sa perya na may popularity contest.
4. On Ms. India
- mukhang tapos na ang Indian dynasty sa mga beauty contests, di na sila ganun ka stand-out, esp. Celina Jaitley, I hate this Indian entry, ang OA, pandakekok pa. India also failed to enter the Miss World Top 10.
- gone are the days of sophisticated and smart Indian girls like Sushmita, Aishwara, and Lara Dutta
5. On Venezuela
- natututo na ang Venezuela na mag send ng English speaking delegates kasi doon sila natalo ng India in the late 90s.
- Venezuela has lost its grasp on Ms. World, 2 years na silang di pumapasok sa Top 10, last year they sent a candidate na look a like ni Rachel Lobangco, kaya lang mas mukha lang mabangis.
6. On Miss International
- Itapon na tong pageant na to, super brainless and sexist. As if binebenta na ang girls sa mga Hapon na nanunuod.
- Face Value lang ang needed sa pageant na to.
- Super boring, at ang crown hanggang ngayon nakatali sa ulo, sinasali pa pati mga Japanese candidates sa mga presentation, super weird, I think Ms. Earth is now the No. 3 sa mga beauty pageants kasi sa Femina Ms India, they have reserved a spot for this pageant na dati ay for Ms. International.

Another thing why I like Miss U:
-the web site (always updated and very cool)
-the delegate's formal pictures have uniformity and is organized.
-same goes during the swimsuit, all of them are wearing the same kind of shoes- very organized.
Of course we CAN and we WILL keep this thread alive!
Basta let's all keep on posting the latest buzz, updates, and tidbits regarding beauty pageants. =)

:D
I agree with everything you posted here! =) Especially the part regarding PR's MU2002 hosting. Let us not be intimidated or afraid of Isis Casalduc. (or whoever will represent PR) Worst comes to worst, malay niyo wala pa siya sa Top Ten! =) Anything could happen...
History has proven for the Miss Universe pageant that LIGHTNING DOESN'T STRIKE TWICE! It's impossible for them to have a back-to-back victory held for two consecutive times in their very own homeland! =)

Well, we have to accept and be optimistic nalang that ONCE again MU will be in Puerto Rico. Just because what happened in 2001 will happen in 2002. We can't compare Denise with Isis anyway. So let's just keep our fingers crossed and support nalang our Thank You Girl... ah I mean our Miss Philippines 2002. hehehe Saka sabi nga nila, with all of this fiasco going around dapat nga sa isang US territory gawin ang mga ganito. Haaay...

Hello skaya!
I have a few minor corrections sa post mo. And also comments sa mga sinabi mo... :D
1.) Femina Miss India's 2nd runner-up does not go to Miss International. They send the girl to Miss Asia Pacific. Para sa kanila, mas importante ang Miss Asia Pacific kasi mas mataas ang level ng competition compared to Miss International. Pero next year, the second runner-up won't be sent to either Miss Asia Pacific or Miss International. Instead, she will be sent to Miss Earth na filipino-produced.
2.) Sa tingin ko, yung sinasabi mong dynasty ng Indian beauty queens is not over yet. Hindi pa natin alam kung anong meron ang India for next year. It does not mean that if they failed in Miss World and Miss Asia Pacific this year, their domination is over. Tingnan na lang natin if their failure continues in three years time. Then saka na lang natin sabihin na nabubulok na din sila.
3.) I bet a lot of Filipinos hate Miss World. Pero IMHO, they're getting better and better now that Julia Morley is the president of the organization. I've come to appreciate Miss World's concept now. Boring naman kasi kung puro Miss Universe na lang. Eh ok nga yung Miss World kasi unpredictable sila. Hindi yung year after year, the same old countries are entering the top ten at Miss Universe. Look at Miss World this year, walang Venezuela, India, USA and other hyped up delegates. This for me is a good sign that everyone is treated fairly. And that everyone has a chance to be in the top ten.
4.) I believe that Donald Trump bought Miss Universe in 1996. Correct me if I'm wrong. This was the same year that the "Little Sisters" portion was abolished. (Am I right?) And that same year, walang national costume sa opening number? (Tama ba?)
5.) I agree that Puerto Rico as host of next year's Miss Universe is a very unwise move. Di ba sila nag iisip? At may chismis pa na Lebanon and Egypt MIGHT not be allowed to compete next year. For God's Sake, what were they thinking?

Correction, yes Trump bought Miss U in 1996 pero may parade of nations pa rin. 1998 nung nawala yung Parade of Nations. Saka I think we should not believe everything that is written sa Message Boards. Wala naman official statement ang MUO eh.
And regarding of Miss World:
Honestly I still find it very boring. The production and the music wasn't really that hip. maganda nga ng diverse ang top 10 nila but yung iba di rin deserving sa top 10. What i like lang dun is yung opening number nila this year. Typcial British, very stiff.

Ah, remember, MU 1996 was the year na Alicia Machado won and the Evening Gown was so boring, Oo nga, this was the year Trump bought the rights.
I agree, super boring ang Miss World, the only time i liked Miss World was when Ruffa became our representative in 93, that Miss World was not boring, it had nice production numbers and video stills, kasi at that time, Sun City was just a new attraction kaya super promote ang ginawa using the delegates.

Hi there again baby_boi!
I believe 1994 was the last year when the Little Sisters participated in the evening gown competition. The classic MU song "You Are My Star" was also played for a short moment for the last time in history shortly before the 1995 evening gown competition began because "Forest Hymn" by Deep Forest was used for the entire evening gown competition itself.
1997 was the last year when the preliminary scores of each delegate were flashed on the screen for the TV audience. In 1998, the national costumes during the Parade of Nations were removed. Instead, the candidates wore black cocktail dresses accentuated with Hawaiian garlands. In 1999, the national costumes were brought back again during the Parade of Nations however, the prelim scores proved to be gone for good.

Thanks for the correction, Lara. I wasn't that hooked into pageants kasi that time... Thanks for that. :D
Anyways, I'd like to reiterate that I love Miss World this year. The opening was great. Ang taray nga eh... Tip: Miss Philippines-World 2001, Girlrhea Quinzon was priviledged enough because she was positioned in front.
Uhhm... I dunno why... but I really like Miss World this year... the Top Ten, the host, the co-host, Opening number, Top Ten selection... I love Miss World winner this year! (Minus the South African guest performers) :D

The only thing I liked about Miss World this year is the opening lang. Medyo sobrang boring yung parade of nations nila. Saka nahalata ko sa speech ni Girlhea, medyo may wrong grammar siya!!! Nakakahiya!!! She said, "I think South Africa should be top list of one's vacation." Parang bitin? Medyo superficial ang dating. Parang robot magsalita.

1990- MISS TAIWAN / R.O.C. Tzui-Pin Wen
1991- MISS GREAT BRITAIN Helen Upton tied with MISS BRAZIL Patricia Godoi for the 11th spot
1992- MISS ICELAND Svava Haraldsd (actually, she was tied for the 10th place with MISS SWEDEN Monica Brodd. However, Miss Universe doesn't allow a top 11 semi-finalist field. MISS SWEDEN was selected to enter the top 10 because she had a higher interview score than MISS ICELAND in the preliminaries. Very unfair, isn't it? SOURCE: the OLD Tom's Page of Miss Universe Mania)
1993- MISS PERU Deborah Souza-Peixoto

1997- MISS PHILIPPINES Abbygale Williamson Arenas

tama ka nga, pang laugh trip manood ng Bb. Grabe namutla ako nung narinig ko last year magsalita si Girleah, si 1st runner up (forogt her name), and si "Quiet" girl. Friend ng friend ko si 1st runner up and we were talking over the phone while watching Bb. Grabe nagmumura siya nung narinig niya yung interview ng kaibigan niya!!!! hehehe Kakahiya talaga mga ibang tao satin sobra!!!! hehehe
I saw this message sa GB MB what do you guys think?
TOPIC A
~~~~~~~~
Well, there is a lot of talk on about whether the Puero Ricans needed security in case Denise lost.
Well there is an OFFICIAL ANSWER TO THIS:
Evelina Papantoniou, (1st RU) stated when she returned to Greece that the crowd threatened they would BURN the stadium unless Denis won.
That statement is not a gossip.
Ask Evelina. And please, don't say that I have something against PR, I am just REPORTING FACTS, NOT OPINIONS!
TOPIC B
~~~~~~~~
The Miss Greece Pageant is probably going to be held somewhere between February and April.
There will be some advertisments on TV, calling girls around Greece to compete, tempting them with the good job Evelina had in MU.
Rumors have it around us, the models, that this year there will be a lot of participations from models of Greece, and not just amateurs. There are some girls that are so willing to be Miss Universe!
Honestly kakahiya talaga yung mga Latinos na yan...
cathybee
Dec 23, 2001, 09:49 AM
Feel ko lang ha...kaya ganyan ang mga Latinos e kase wala na silang ibang pwedeng imarket with their countries kundi *** mga top caliber beautiful women daw nila kuno!Un na lang ang maiooffer nila eh...Di ba...pag naiisip ng tao ang Venezuela..naiisip nila *** mga laging finalist na gals nila sa mga beauty pageants other than that, do we know anything about that country, wala. Kaya life and death nila ang beauty contests...na parang life and death ang soccer sa Europe

Sa tingin ko, di rin naman natin masisisi yung mga girls to commit mistakes. Grabe ang pressure sa kanila and for sure sobrang nervous yang mga yan. At isa pa, hindi comfortable yung iba sa English... Pero kailangan eh, so nagta-try hard sila to converse in English kahit di carry. Nakakahiya man, eh ano magagawa natin? Buti nga they've mustered up the guts to join...

All I am saying is that sana those Bb. peeps could train their girls in public speaking, etc. Like what they did in Femina, pero geesh, they would cram their trainning for bb. in less than 2 months or so, unlike in Femina they train their girls as early as August or September. We lack girls with substance and character, remember this post from the first page? this says it all na eh.
Everytime I watch a Q&A portion of a local pageant, I always get so embarrassed that our women are so shallow and inarticulate. They are always trying to be pathetically cute.
The point of all this is that our women do not have any substance.

The last day for submission of application forms is on January 12, 2002, Saturday. The screening process will take some time. The confirmation of the 26 or so official candidates will take place if not on the last week of January, the first week of February. By then, the Bb. Pilipinas web site has been updated for the 2002 batch. The coronation night will be held most probably on the second Saturday of March 2002.

BPCI traditionally train their girls on vulnerable areas such as public speaking and grooming. The only BIG BIG problem is that they train them after they have won because by then, their respective contracts with BPCI have formally taken into effect. That is the only time when BPCI becomes responsible for their training and grooming. This is a BIG disadvantage especially for the Bb. Pilipinas UNIVERSE titleholder. Sad to say, kung sino pa yung isasabak sa pinakamabigat na beauty pageant ay yun pa ang gipit sa oras to prepare. That 1 or 2-week stint in Venezuela is really useless. Dapat talaga she has been trained for MONTHS and not WEEKS.
I really hope they could hold the Bb. Pilipinas pageant again during the month of October, just like what happened in the 1994 pageant. It was then BPCI's 30th anniversary and at the same time the MU pageant was to be held in the country in May the next year. Charlene really had a LOT of time to prepare. And it really payed off. Cara even made it to the Miss World '94 semi-finals because she had a year and a month to prepare!

Infos from www.globalbeauties.com
MISS FRANCE ORGANIZATION TO LAUNCH MEGA INTERNATIONAL PAGEANT IN 2002
Mr. Xavier de Fontenay, Madame de Fontenay's son and director of the Société Miss France, or the Miss France Organization, which sends French representatives to Miss Universe, Miss International, Miss Europe and many other international beauty competitions, announced yesterday night on a popular French talkshow that Société Miss France will launch its own international beauty pageant in 2002.
Ever since the Société Miss France become financially powerful, this idea started taking shape, and is now about to become a reality. Monsieur de Fontenay's ambition is quite clear: to compete with Miss Universe and Miss World. He promises a mega production to match the two most important beauty pageants in the world.
The name of the competition is still a secret, but he already declared that it will be tvbroadcast in France and in many other countries. 80 nations or more are expected to participate in the first edition of the new pageant.
==============================================
Naku, panibagong pageant na naman... Siguradong bongga yan. At malalaos na ng tuluyan ang Miss International and Miss Earth. Kawawa naman... :(
Ano naman kaya ang magiging pangalan ng pageant ng Miss France Organization? Sana maganda din.
Anyways, I saw pictures of delegates competing for the Miss Europe Pageant. And it looks like Elodie (Miss France Universe 2001) is competing once more. Makakapasok kaya siya sa top ten on her own merits? Tingnan na lang natin.
Guys, Merry Christmas!! Sana ok na ang Bb. next year! That's my wish this christmas. :santa3:

The 1994 Bb. Pilipinas was the best batch ever. Charlene was a finalist at Miss Universe, Cara was a Semi-finalist at Miss World and Alma was also a Semi-finalist at Miss International. I hope BPCI will have enough time to prepare our delegates just like what they did with this batch.
Sayang talaga si Charlene. She should have joined Miss World 99 para may Miss World na tayo. Walang sinabi si Yukta Mookhey ng India sa kanya. :)

We can't be sure how Charlene would do in Miss World. Napaka unpredictable nung pageant na yun- there were lots of very beautiful girls sa Miss World pero di naman nasasama sa top 10. Ang masasabi ko is, sayang si Ruffa, we could have another Miss Universe sana nun- Dindi dakilang thank you girl. 1999 was a very competitive year sa Miss World kaya. Remember si Miss Venezuela Martina Thorogood?

Hi cathybee!
Yung baby fats naman niya ay concentrated sa face eh. At least wala siyang flabs na super obvious. I think it's in her genes na tabain siya.
Remember Angela Visser's comment shortly before the MU94 swimsuit competition: " This is a real moment of truth for Charlene Gonzalez, Miss Philippines, because when she was growing up as a kid, believe it or not she was five feet four and weighed a hundred and sixty-seven pounds...and her brother even nick-named her Miss Piggy!" Then co-host Arthelle Neville was quick to counter react: "What!? I saw her at the preliminaries last Sunday night and no one's going to call her Miss Piggy tonight!" Hehe! Did you guys remember those side comments during MU94? Review the tape. Kakatuwa mga comments nila. Then Charlene earned a 9.425 for her swimsuit. She ranked 6th.
By the way, a week before the Bb. Pilipinas '94 coronation that took place on Oct. 31, 1993, Showbiz Linggo interviewed the outgoing Bb. Pilipinas '93 batch. Ruffa, Dindi, and Sheila revealed that Charlene was their unanimous bet for the Bb. Pilipinas Universe crown and they were all right!

I think Charlene could have scored HIGHER in the evening gown competition if she wore her blue, sexy terno instead of that yellow-gold balloon gown. Lalo lang siyang nagmukhang mataba. Saka her hairdo was BEST for the all the competitions EXCEPT for the evening gown competition. Dapat naka-bun na yun by then...A lot of people had negative comments regarding her hairdo.

Oo nga... Making it to the top ten was already enough... Pero question lang, Siya ba yung last dun sa Final Six Q & A? Or was it USA's Lu Parker or Slovakia?
I also didn't like the hair... And the gown! Sayang si Michelle Van Eimeren, Miss Australia. She placed 11th lang. She could replace Miss Switzerland and Miss Sweden that year!

Hey guys,
I watched Metro Manila Film Festival Awards Night and Miriam Quiambao was one of the hosts! She wore different gowns. I noticed one gown similar to that of Carlene Aguilar, Miss Philippines-Earth.

Yikes!!!!! The Frutella gown??? hehehe Well i haven't seen the awards night- sino nanalo? At least si Mirriam may "K" naman dalhin, but can't she wear other unique designs? That type of gown I think is not really suited for Big pageants like Miss U. I dunno why she won best in long gown, I liked Miss Kazahkstan's gown more. Is it true that Mirriam has an attitude problem?

Hi baby_boi!
Congrats for being so observant and alert! You are right! She is indeed wearing the same evening gown Carlene Aguilar wore in Miss Earth. I personally did not like the gown from the very beginning. Too exagerrated...
You are also right for saying na she should not have worn the exact gown because parang wala siyang originality and delikadeza. However, I liked the previous black tube gown she was wearing earlier in the show-- labas na labas ang pagka-exotic niya dun. It was complete with matching accessories and jewelry, and make-up!
Off topic again: I found Assunta's blue gown very plain with no "spark" at all... to think it showed too much flesh... And what was Alessandra wearing!?!?! If not for that big rose in her neck, she could already be considered a walking "basahan"... Sorry for the harsh comments. I really did not like her gown and get-up.

I believe it was none other than Pitoy Moreno. He designed everything for Charlene: from her cocktail dresses, Sarimanok-inspired national costume, Philippine terno, silver gown worn during Peabo Bryson's special performance, to that yellow-gold balloon evening gown.

Mismo!! She didn't deserve her spot in the Top Ten of Miss Earth! Promise!
sa mga nanalo naman,
Best Actor - Cesar Montano
Best Actress - Assunta da Rossi (na shock ako! promise!)
Best Supporting Actor - some guy from Bagong Buwan
Best Supporting Actress - Alessandra da Rossi (walking basahan)
As for Miriam wearing the "frutella" (thanks for the term, Lara!), I believe she carried it well naman...

Parang hello? Bumababa ng level si Miriam. Di ko talaga ma-take! Promise!

Or if she wore the Muslim inspired green gown or the white gown that she wore during the "A whole new world" production. It resembles Ruffa Guttierez' black gown when she won 2nd princess at Miss World 1993. It's really a standout.
Another no-no was Cara Subijano's gown during Miss World 1994. It really sucks. Mas maganda pa yung white off-shoulder gown niya when she won Bp. Pilipinas - World.
