Too bad for Hong Kong... :(

Anyways, if my calculation is right, if ever Hong Kong will send a candidate in Miss Universe 2002, the representative will be Ms. HK 2001 as Ms. HK 2002 has not yet been chosen till may or later pa yata....TVB is the franchise holder of Ms. HK as far as I remember

Eddie Mercado is good, but then he's too old...

We need someone not too old, not too young, has the looks to die for saka hindi boring. Mahirap maghanap ng ganyan nowadays.

Past Bb. Pilipinas hosts (at least of recent memory) include David Bunevacz (2001), Apa Ongpin ('93-'94), Paolo Bediones ('98-'99) and Edu Manzano ('95-'97 (?)). Am I forgetting someone?

What's their common denominator?

BREAKING NEWS- WELCOME BACK MISS GUYANA!!!!
According to an article on the Pageant Almanac message board, taken from a Guyanese newspaper there will be a new Miss Guyana Universe selected April 13 in a contest to be televised. Apparently there will be new franchise holders! Great! Olive Gopaul thus will not be going.

McNeal Enterprises to stage Miss Guyana Universe pageant -- *.*, 15:05:49 03/07/02 Thu
January 28, 2002

Guyana has in the past made major inroads at the Miss World Pageant but never at the Miss Universe contest. However, the new franchise holder for the Miss Universe contest is not only confident of staging a pageant with a difference but that the queen will stamp her authority at the event billed for May on the island of Puerto Rico.

A new spin to this year's Miss Guyana Universe pageant, expected to be staged at the National Cultural Centre on April 13, will be a grand ball for the queen and delegates after the pageant where they would be serenaded by international artistes.

Negotiations are also in the final stages to have two former Miss Universe queens appear at the pageant.

This year's franchise holder is McNeal Enterprises, run by businessman Odinga Lumumba. He has established a committee to aid in the preparations.

The committee members are coordinator, Nickolet Trotman, designers Michelle Cole, Pamela Fox and Pat Coates, physical fitness instructor, Regina Spencer, pageant organiser and beauty salon owner, Pamela Dillon, commercial interior designer, Supriya Singh and Clem David and Steve Ninvalle as the public relations officers.

Trinidadian Lester Rauseo will be entrusted with the task of training the sixteen contestants.

This is not the first time Guyana will be seeing Rauseo at work as he was intimately involved in the last Miss Guyana Universe pageant hosted in 1999. That year's queen, Morvinia Sobers, participated in the Miss Universe contest which was held in Trinidad.

Speaking to Stabroek News on Friday, Ninvalle said that the committee is aiming to have a pageant with a "difference."

Flashback: the 1971 pageant to choose Miss Guyana sa Miss Coca-Cola Nalini Moonasar (centre) being crowned as the queen. The first runner-up was Minerva Leow (left) while Miss Chronicle Faye Clarke was third.

Though these are sentiments that were heard before from the coordinators for the 1999 Miss Guyana Universe and last year's Miss Guyana World pageants, Ninvalle assured that steps have been taken to ensure that this contest will be the talk of the town long after it is staged.

The pageant will see some sixteen girls participating and these girls must have a minimum of five CXC subjects with at least a Grade Two in English A.

Ninvalle said that the committee is hoping to attract contestants from across the country. Applications would be available for potential contestants by next Monday and the coordinators would be visiting the various regions and distributing applications. Contestants must be between the ages of 18 and 27, unmarried and have no children.

According to Ninvalle, five finalists will be chosen from the 16.

Prior to the pageant the swimsuit competition will be staged and points from this will be collated with the scores from the other segments on the night of the pageant.

This together with television and radio programmes, where the contestants will be asked questions by members of the public, are novel features. Points from the question and answer programmes will also be used in choosing the queen.

It will be a night that the contestants are unlikely to forget as they will be the centre of attraction at the grand ball. A venue for the ball has not been identified as yet but Ninvalle said it will be a canopy style affair catering for some three thousand persons.

The ball will be spiced with the electrifying voices of international singers, including Jamaican reggae singer, Freddie McGregor and a band called `QT' also from the land of reggae. The public relations officer said that the committee is also negotiating with Trinidadian soca singer, Machel Montano and a Grammy award winning singer.

The franchise holder is hoping to make the event an annual one and hopes that it will be a tourist attraction as Guyana attempts to invigorate its tourist industry.

The organisers have not yet decided on what prizes will be given to the winners of the pageant but it has been promised that the girls will not have problems securing what they win. Also they would not be saddled with the responsibility of finding sponsors as the co-ordinators will assist in this aspect.

So Guyanese can sit back and relax and wait for a pageant of a lifetime, or so the organizers promise.

Guyana has been quite successful at the Miss World in the past, although never capturing the ultimate prize. In 1967 Shakira Baksh placed third at the Miss World and in 1971 Nalini Moonasar copped fourth place at the pageant. That was the last time Guyana placed at any pageant although last year's Miss Guyana World, Olive Gopaul was widely acclaimed for her performance at the pageant held in South Africa.

CONFIRMED

Great Britain will indeed participate in MU2002.

Yanna Booth, 21, 5'11", will represent her country on May 29.

She is scheduled to undergo intense preparations under the training of Felix Farias, director of Miss Tourism Venezuela. She will fly to the city of Valencia in Venezuela soon.

This year's MU is really tough... imagine 4 of the 80+ delegates have had Venezuelan training.

They are Misses Venezuela (of course), Colombia (Marianela, Catalina and Andrea all had Osmel training. Vanessa will follow), Germany (of course Natascha was Yaracuy's rep in MV2000) and Great Britain (Yanna's flying to train soon).

Take note, wala pa sa list yung representative natin, na most probably ipapadala din uli sa La Quinta to train.

"I became a ballerina, beauty queen and top model.. thanks to Sharon Stone"

MISS GREAT BRITAIN'S STAR SECRET

SHE was crowned Miss Great Britain, and lovely Yana Booth turned to face the flashing cameras and the cheering crowds.

She cried of course. It's what beauty queens do.

But Yana's tears weren't just for herself - she was also thinking of the secret friend who inspired her, Hollywood actress Sharon Stone.

"If it hadn't been for Sharon, there might have been times when I would just have given up," Yana, 21, said. "She always reminded me to keep my thoughts on being successful at whatever I tried to do in life."

Yana, who won the beauty title last week, was just 14 and a gifted ballet dancer when the long-distance friendship was forged seven years ago.

It was Sharon who paid the £50,000 fees for her to study at the world's finest ballet school, the Bolshoi in Moscow. And Sharon kept in touch with messages of support through her years of training and study.

Amazingly, the two have never met - the only time they have spoken was when Sharon phoned briefly to wish Yana good luck as she set out for the Bolshoi school.

But the Basic Instinct star and the mechanic's daughter from Bexley, Kent, began writing regularly - one from Hollywood, the other from a spartan Moscow flat.

"I think Sharon recognised a bit of herself in me," Yana said. "She told me I was setting out on a great adventure and whenever I got homesick or felt the work was too tough, then I should keep reminding myself why I was there.

"She said I was chasing a dream, just like she had done.

"She told me about the times before she was successful and famous, when she had been working as a waitress and modelling part-time to earn the money to keep her dream alive.

"She knew what it was like. She had a goal in life and dedicated herself to achieving it, and she wanted to give me all the encouragement she could to do the same."

It had been sheer chance that Sharon ever heard about Yana - who this week launches a new branch of her career... modelling. Tight-makers Pretty Polly have hired her to show off their new range with her 37in legs.

AT home in LA, Sharon saw a story on the CNN news channel about the British girl with a dazzling talent, who had won a place at the Bolshoi and whose family would have to struggle to send her.

She had just set up the Sharon Stone Trust to help fund youngsters studying performing arts and she told aides to track down the new prodigy.

At first Yana's family - dad Ian and her Russian-born mother Lara - thought that the call from Hollywood offering financial help was a hoax.

But it was the star's words of advice, as much as her money which Yana found invaluable as she worked her way through the Bolshoi.

In one letter, Sharon wrote: "Artistic achievement is a discipline and an endless sacrifice. But you are gifted. Follow your joy, for inside that joy - beyond your technique - lies your talent."

She sympathised as Yana wrote how much she missed home and told about the hardships of life in the Bolshoi college - the cockroaches in the toilet and the poor food.

When Sharon's replies arrived, Yana only told a few close friends about the movie star who had become her patron.

"We were only young teenagers, not old enough to see her Certificate 18 films," Yana said. "But we used to go through the magazines, looking for her photo. I always thought her letters were too personal to go showing around, though she never discussed her own life or her work."

In one letter, when Yana was struggling with exams, Sharon wrote: "Never give up. It's difficult, I know, but unless and until you are 110 per cent certain that you are just never going to make it, then never give up." In the end, Yana grew too tall to be a ballet dancer, reaching 6ft. "I wrote to Sharon explaining how things had ended, and she was very sympathetic and said I shouldn't despair because I had done my best

"She told me that experience was never wasted, and I believe that's true. I've trained as a ballet dancer, at the finest school. I never expected to be a beauty queen - a friend persuaded me to enter as Miss Kent because it seemed a bit of harmless fun - and I certainly never expected to win.

"But strangely enough, when I was out there on the platform, I took it seriously.

"I remembered my Bolshoi discipline. And _ I remembered what Sharon said, about always trying for success in whatever you do.""

Meanwhile, her Miss Great Britain title was being celebrated at a mansion in Hollywood...

"This is great news," Sharon Stone said. And she was still dispensing advice...

"With hard work, discipline and thoughtfulness, Yana may be able to turn this into the career of her dreams, and I wish her every success."

sinner: well, ganyan talaga kapag impressive ang school and other activities. pero, as cathybee said, sa wit and charm madadaan yan, lalo na sa final stretch ng pageant.

What happened to Ms. Manalo's swimsuit pic? She looks....flabby. Hope she shapes up in time for coronation night, para naman masma-heat up ang competition.

RE China C. I really think she should hone her hosting skills more bago siya ipasabak ulit sa isang hosting event of Bb. P. magnitude. Well, GMA was "noble" enough to copy international pageant formulas like backstage interviews, but they certainly chose the wrong people. Backstage interviewers should convey to the tv audience at least half of the excitement and "electricity" in the backstage air, something which, IMHO, Gelli and Janice failed to do (not to mention Janice's poor choice of frock, IMHO). Maybe someone more talkative and in the know of pageantry, e.g. Ruffa, or someone with pizzazz and energy e.g. Suzie Entrata and the like.

RE Miss HK. Hmmmm siguro nga they'll integrate it with Miss PRC. Para naman madagdagan ang mga girls, which I think wil be mostly coming from Shanghai and Beijing.

NATIONAL COSTUME TRIVIA
I was able to speak to my friend from Thailand, and the name of the costume Miss Thailand 2001 wore was called a "kinaree," it was influenced by both Indian and Thai cultures and there is a story behind it. There is an angel princess who lives in the Himalayas and has seven of these dresses and all of them have wings (that is what you see at the back), this story was derived from the Bhuddist bible called, "*** tai pee dok"

This type of costume is worn by folk dancers in central and the southern parts of Thailand.

Miskina if we think na nakakasawa na ang mga costumes nila, when you hear the story behind it, it becomes interesting pala.

I think puwede basta galingan mo lang diskarte mo. After all, the event's gonna take place at the hotel's poolside area... and as we all know, this area is an open area for the public, especially for the hotel's foreign and local customers. Siyempre, they just can't force people to leave the area just because a press presentation's taking place...

But then, I'll ask para sure. :)

Bigger pictures from Miss Shanghai Universe. It seems na mas singkit sila compared from the delegates we see from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. Mas strong Chinese features.

Chez-o, lately they put "Taiwan" sa sashes nalang, without the R.O.C.

WHEN was the last time a Filipina won an international beauty title? Feminists may howl in protest over such a question, but like it or not, beauty contests will remain part of Pinoy culture, much like Pinoys’ passion for politics, basketball, show biz and gossip. With the beauty contest season upon us again and the Bb. Pilipinas organizers crowning a new batch of beauty queens on Saturday, the question is quite timely.

By international, we’re not referring to the Manila-based Miss Asia-Pacific Quest or some obscure beauty pageant inspired by the earth, moon, sun and stars. We mean the big three: Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss International.

It has been—count ’em–23 years since a Filipina brought home a major crown. Melanie Marquez won Miss International in Tokyo, Japan in 1979. Before that, the Philippines produced four world-class beauty queens in less than a decade: Gemma Cruz, Miss International, 1965; Gloria Diaz, Miss Universe, 1969; Aurora Pijuan, Miss International, 1970; and Margarita "Margie" Moran, Miss Universe, 1973.

No Filipina has won the Miss World title, although three women almost made it: Pinky Amabuyok (first runner-up, 1969); Evangeline Pascual (first runner-up, 1974); and the once-controversial Ruffa Gutierrez (second runner-up, 1993).

"I’ve never lost faith in the beauty of the Filipina," says veteran fashion designer Pitoy Moreno. "We were like India then. Almost all our girls made it to the semifinals." As co-chair of the Bb. Pilipinas Charities, Inc., Moreno has been active for several decades now in the annual selection of beauty queens to be sent abroad. (Unfortunately, Stella Marquez de Araneta, founder and current chair of the Bb. Pilipinas Charities, Inc., is out of the country and unavailable for interview at press time.)

Still, a 23-year title drought is something worth looking into. Not a few are wondering why a country famed for its beautiful women hasn’t produced a single international beauty queen in more than a generation now. Other countries—particularly Venezuela, Puerto Rico and, lately, India—have been winning the beauty titles that were once within easy reach of the charming and sharp Filipina.

“There’s really no formula to winning,” says Moran, who bested 70 or so women for the Miss Universe title in Athens, Greece. “In my case, I consider my victory providential. I really can’t say why we haven’t been winning lately because we’ve been sending some of the most beautiful women abroad.”

Of course, Moran had everything going for her during her time. Photographers and the Greek press so adored her that they voted her Miss Photogenic. She immediately impressed virtually every judge except for one: legendary Spanish matador El Cordobes. But by the time of the final judging, even the skeptical Spaniard had been charmed by the Filipina, although she would not know until later what changed his mind.

Moran says she only found out about the matador’s change of heart—and what brought it on—years later after she read a book on the contest written by one of the pageant’s Spanish-speaking interpreters, the same woman who interpreted for El Cordobes. “Instead of speaking to him in English," Moran recalls, "I spoke to him in Spanish during our one-on-one interview. My Spanish wasn’t perfect, but it managed to win him over. In the end, he was said to have voted for me."

Moran, however, didn’t lose sleep preparing for the big event. Unlike Miriam Quiambao, who almost ran away with the Miss Universe crown three years ago, Moran didn’t train under a “beauty magician” like Venezuelan Osmel Sousa to polish her act. “Except for my regular trips to the gym and a daily dose of current events,” she says, “I hardly prepared for the contest. I was more concerned about tanning myself to look exotic.”

Of course, Moran wasn’t exactly unused to being in the limelight when she joined Miss Universe. The one-time actress and dancer had gained enough poise and confidence after several years of performing on stage. While still a student, she modeled clothes for Auggie Cordero, one of her mentors. Cordero designed Moran’s gown for the finals, while Aureo Alonzo did her terno.

Moran, however, is among the few “unprepared” exceptions. Pitoy Moreno underscores the importance of preparation to help boost a candidate’s chances of winning. Preparation should start long before she joins a local contest, he notes, and should continue even after the title has been won.

In Venezuela, young hopefuls enter the so-called beauty schools to prepare themselves years before joining a national pageant. Reports have it that preparations include cosmetic surgery to enhance or correct certain flaws. In India, a nation of close to a billion people, beauty contests have reportedly become almost weekly events, from the biggest cities to the most remote towns.

Beauty pageants have become big business in Venezuela not only for organizers, but also for couturiers, stylists, image consultants and cosmetic surgeons. Like their Philippine counterparts, not a few Venezuelan beauties have parlayed their titles into careers in show biz, politics, media and tourism.

“Pageant organizers in Venezuela even get government support,” says Moreno. “Although we’re still able to get a modest number of sponsors, it’s nowhere as close or as generous as the support they get in Venezuela.”

In the absence of "beauty" schools in the Philippines, Moreno and company have considered holding the local competitions much earlier, possibly one or two years before they participate in international pageants to better prepare the women. "But we had to abandon the idea," he says. "No woman would be willing to wait for a year or two before getting a chance at competing abroad. Filipino pa? We’re known to enlist at the last minute. Worse, not a few winners think that everything ends once they win. It’s just the first step. The main event is the pageant abroad."

The country’s representative to the Miss Universe, for instance, has less than two months to prepare before competition. Although winners are virtually considered “properties" of Bb. Pilipinas, in some cases, organizers have had to compete for the women’s attention after they’ve been crowned.

“Winners are usually swamped with invitations from friends and relatives to grace this or that affair," Moreno sighs. "In the end, they only get to spend 40 percent of their time with us."

Moreno also underscores the importance of being able to speak English well (Melanie Marquez was just lucky the Miss International tilt didn’t have a stringent Q&A portion.) He notes the diminishing ability of beauty contestants to express themselves in the language over the years. This has become a liability since international beauty pageants, particularly Miss Universe and Miss World, expect Filipinas to be fluent in English.

“That has been India’s edge over the Philippines in recent years," he says. “Their candidates are so eloquent in English.” He adds that it’s unthinkable to ask Miss Universe organizers to provide a Filipino contestant with an interpreter the way they provide interpreters for Latin American beauties.

What about cosmetic surgery? Are local organizers desperate enough now to resort to the Venezuelan formula to enhance, say, the trademark Pinoy nose? “We don’t as a rule encourage women to undergo cosmetic surgery,” says Moreno, “but if they feel that it will enhance their looks, we’re not stopping them from having one. Filipinas, by nature, don’t resort to cosmetic surgery except the matronas."

Fashion designer and legendary Pygmalion of many a beauty queen Renee Salud agrees: “If it will help them, why not? Cosmetic surgery is like giving a woman the right hairdo and makeup. Although in the case of Melanie and Chat (Silayan), both didn’t undergo such during their time.”

The articulate Silayan, although not as striking as Marquez, almost won the Miss Universe crown, landing third runner up in 1980. Not a few observers credited Silayan’s poise for boosting her chances. The image of her gliding on stage in a strapless, off-white serpentina designed by Salud (“Mama Renee” to his pretty wards) remains etched in many a gay’s memory. "Those were memorable days for me as well," Salud waxes nostalgic.

Aside from the two women, Salud claims to have mentored such local beauty queens as Dorothy Sue Bradley, Anna Lorraine Kier, Rose Anne Blas, Desiree Verdadero, Joyce Anne Burton, Sarah Jane Paez, Thea Robles, Gem Padilla, Patty Betita, Marina Benipayo, AJ Abayari, Malou Gonzales, Jennifer Fernando and even the late Maria Teresa Carlson, among others.

Bradley and Verdarero were also runners up in their respective international contests. Salud’s list doesn’t include his protegees who did well in the Mutya ng Pilipinas, another prestigious local beauty pageant.

“There was a time when all major winners in Bb. Pilipinas had trained under me,” says Salud, referring to the 1981 batch composed of Maricar Mendoza, Peachy Sacasas and Josephine Bautista.

Salud finds fulfillment in seeing a commoner Jane blossom into a full-fledged beauty queen. That’s why he emphasizes the importance of exposure and packaging in producing a potential winner. “You have to know the girls very well,” he says, “to determine what works for them. They became my friends first before I brought them to beauty contests.”

Like Moreno and Ben Farrales, Salud once trained his protegees by making them model his clothes here and abroad. The experience, he says, not only enhanced their poise but also boosted their confidence. “They weren’t clueless when they were sent to compete abroad. They already knew how to project and take care of themselves.”

Salud speaks in the past tense because he has lost interest in helping cultivate budding beauty queens. His disinterest started during the early 1990s, and he blamed Bb. Pilipinas organizers for this. Although pageant insiders deny it, Salud has accused them of barring titleholders from wearing gowns by local designers in international tilts.

He cites the case of Jewel May Lobaton (1998 Bb. Pilipinas Universe), who was allegedly reprimanded by organizers for wearing a gown by Larry Espinosa. There’s probably some truth to Salud’s accusation. When we interviewed Quiambao in 1999, for instance, she said she wore a gown by Halston in the finals. We found this strange because as far as we could remember, local beauty queens traditionally wore gowns by Filipino designers.

"They started to become strict during the time of Marina (Benipayo) and Patty (Betita)," says Salud, without referring to any particular organizer. "I don’t care who gets hurt, but I find it insulting for local designers to see Filipinas wearing gowns made by foreigners." He is candid enough to admit that such global events have provided designers like him a venue to showcase their work and promote their names.

With the current policy, he says not a few couturiers have lost interest in grooming potential winners. "The poor designer is left with nothing if you deprive him of this. I’m very grateful to beauty contests, not necessarily to the organizers, because through this medium, I was able to make a name for myself. The mileage it offered was really fantastic."

When asked about the alleged policy, Moran says, “Designers go through a lot in polishing these girls. In fairness to them, they should be given an incentive by allowing their protegees to wear their gowns. It’s important that you project the Filipino couturier."

But Moran sees nothing wrong in allowing a candidate to wear, say, French couture or an American-made gown straight from a Sears’ catalog. "As long as she looks good in it."

A Bb. Pilipinas insider, who asked not to be named, admitted as much. “It doesn’t matter where you get your gown as long at it works, but every item a candidate wears during the finals has to be approved by Mrs. Araneta. She’s the expert.”

This line of reasoning has proven detrimental, says Salud, who also encouraged Quiambao to join the Bb. Pilipinas after voting for her years ago in a campus beauty contest at the University of Santo Tomas. “Good for Miriam who hit upon the right look, but if we want to boost our chances of winning, we can’t go on resorting to such a hit-or-miss formula."

As other countries have discovered, producing world-class beauty queens is fast becoming an exact science.

EDGAR ALLAN, fashion designer

BEAUTY pageants have become big business with major multi-national conglomerates as sponsors. Sponsors are interested in highly populated areas where their products can be widely promoted. And since the developed countries of the west are already blasé toward the idea of beauty contests, pageant organizers target their venues at highly populated developing countries or regions where beauty pageants still command wide interest.

Some densely populated developing countries like India in Asia and Venezuela in the Latin America treat beauty pageants as an important tourism tool and back their local contests with generous government support and rigid training, So they produce the most polished candidates in all major international contests.

Political agenda can also influence pageant results. An aggressive developing country very interested in promoting its tourism industry or deodorizing its political status can mount an effective lobbying campaign to influence pageant results.

AUGGIE CORDERO, fashion designer

WE don’t have a finishing school to prepare our candidates way, way ahead of the major competitions. India was recently featured in Time Magazine. They train their candidates so well that most of their women are entering the modeling business. Winning major beauty pageants has become such a big promotion for their country. Most of their women want to join the beauty business. Venezuela has beauty schools for their women, who are trained for the question and answer portions. If you’d notice Venezuelan candidates are confident on stage, they have confidence, they know where to stand and where to put their hands.

I believe our women have potential but they should be trained to speak better, carry themselves well, deal with people, fix themselves, and project themselves to the audience. They should also read, read and read. They must be in the know of the current events. For me, they need to be trained at least a year or so.

BEN FARRALES, fashion designer

IT’S not that we’ve ran out of beauty contestants. But if you want to go global, you also have to base it on luck, fate and moral support. In South America, they even put up a school to train beauty candidates. But we cannot expect that in our country because the government is focused on peace and order and the economy.

Today’s candidates are not that intense. And what are their dreams? Becoming another Melanie Marquez or Aurora Pijuan is not really an ideal thing. Marquez has had several husbands and Pijuan, on the other hand, has been separated for many years now.

Another reason many girls are hesitant to join beauty tilts is that candidates are subjected to a lot of scrutiny. A beauty title is not enough to lure these girls to join. Participating in one has many setbacks -- you have to give up your privacy and so many other things.

NES JARDIN, President, Cultural Center of the Philippines

MANY of our beauty queens have the beauty and brains but a lot depends on the personal preferences of judges. Also, other countries like Venezuela have taken beauty competitions seriously and even established schools to train their titleholders in all aspects.

EMMA NAVARRO, painter of female nudes and a former nude model for National Artist Jerry Elizalde Navarro

WE lack preparation. Other countries send their picks only after a rigorous training not just intellectually, but they also seek the help of doctors to fix whatever imperfections they have. Our entries are not so bad. In fact, they can outdo the others in some aspects. But if they have the face and the intellect, they lack the height, or vice versa. We produce a much taller generation now. I hope we focus on their height, and let them pass the long training that they need before ever sending them.

ELMER QUINTANA, VP for special events, Backroom

MY observation of major international beauty pageants point to a bias for the fair complexion types like South Americans, Venezuelans, Brazilians and Europeans, who are always in the final 5 or 10. Asians barely reach the final round with the exception of Miss India, who, probably because of the Indians’ philosophical upbringing, tend to be more witty and eloquent over the rest.

RICKY REYES, hair and beauty expert

ALL our women are beautiful but, sad to say, they are not groomed or trained well for the international pageant. Our women have to be trained at least two to three years before they compete. Take a look at Venezuela and other Latin American countries. They have beauty factories. They train their girls as early as 13 years old. Plus, they are supported by their government. Here, our ladies join the contest at 18 or 19 and they lack exposure. I feel it’s best that we train potential candidates as early as 16 and let them join the contest at 18 or 19. It’s not enough to be beautiful only. They should develop elan and confidence, and should be trained in public speaking. They should be exposed to fashion shows and parties to meet different types of people. Rowena Burgos, Vangie Baga-Reyes and Constantino Tejero, Inquirer News Service

Mas prestigious pa nga sila nalang ang kumuha ng rights for Bb. Pilipinas eh...

When was the last time ABS-CBN televised Bb. Pilipinas? I think it was way back in 1995. (I'm not really sure ha) Si Edu Manzano pa nga ang host noon eh. Saka anchor si Giselle Toengi. Eto ata yung nag-launch ng career ni G. eh.

Lara, hindi ba ABS-CBN ang official TV station ng MU94?

Hi guys! This year's search for Miss Brasil is a blast! There are just too many perfect contenders for the crown. Three of them are Keli Kaniak, Josiane de Oliveira and Roseane Lima.

I just hope whoever wins the Miss Brasil 2002 crown on April 13 will be as strong as her...

LEILA SCHUSTER- In my opinion, she's the MOST BEAUTIFUL Brazilian representative to MU ever...

As we all know, Leila topped the entire MU93 preliminary competition. No wonder, her training with Osmel in La Quinta really, really paid off. Too bad she settled for 7th place overall because of her poor swimsuit and interview scores.

She really could have been Brazil's 3rd MU...

I dunno i think it was either 97 or 96. Yeah ABS was the official station of MU94. I was just trying to point out lang na after 94, they did not broadcast MU anymore, sayang, then ngayon they would just settle in broadcasting a trying hard pageant like Miss Earth? If they want high ratings, they should broadcast Miss U, agree? Not Miss Earth, blech sino manonood nun?

Alam mo Lara, I think tama ka. 1997 nga yung last time that ABS-CBN televised Bb. Pilipinas. I remember it clearly na. Kasi nung 1998 ay GMA 7 na ang sumalo ng pageant na ito. Tamang-tama it coincided with the Centennial celebration. Ito ang nag-launch ng career ni Paolo Bediones.

Yup I agree... who needs Miss Earth? Napaka-trying hard. Ultimo logo (logo na lang ha!) ginaya pa talaga from the redefined MU logo. Bulok pa ang delegate and winner sashes... pati corona ang panget din! Too think, hindi naman pangit ang mga delegates. They didn't deserve all those flaws and snags in the first place. Saka I find the titles "Water", "Fire" and "Air" very, very tacky!!!

By now, I'm assuming alam nyo na ang trend ng Venezuela sa MU. Iba ang gown na suot sa prelims sa suot sa live telecast. Iniiba nila para mas may suspense. I wonder what Cynthia's really gonna wear... pamatay na naman sigurado... basta expect WHITE, WHITE, WHITE!!!

Actually Lara, sa tingin ko lang... Walang site na nag-report nyan. Kasi ang daming beses ko nang nabasa na baka white daw ata uli ang susuotin ng Venezuela sa MU. Kaya I posted the sketch of Martina Thorogood's gown in MW99... parang ganyan siguro ang kalalabasan ng susuotin ni Cynthia... :)

Yup, Froken Sverige 2002 was a huge disappointment... I was expecting top fave Emma Fredriksson to win the top plum!

It seems that a LOT of national pageant directors are sending their MU2002 representatives to Venezuela to train.

The reigning Miss Trinidad & Tobago Universe Nasma Mohammed could have been one of the many students of Osmel Sousa, head of Organizacion Miss Venezuela. However, the Trinidadian pageant organizers have decided NOT to send Nasma anymore to prepare for MU2002.

Question lang... I hope anyone in this thread can provide an answer...

Bakit madami at well-established ang mga Japanese sa Peru?

Here's a concrete example. Remember Peru's half-Japanese president Alberto Fujimori? Imagine, a Japanese for a president of a South American nation? Weird, huh?

Puwede ko pang mainitindihan why Hawaii, Guam and Northern Marianas are Filipino-infested territories-- it's because of the proximity of these places to our country.

Pero ang hindi ko talaga maintindihan is bakit ang dami talagang Japanese sa Peru... What's with Peru and the Japanese seem to be so in love with it? Is there a historical explanation for this?

Kanina kasi I was surfing www.perumodels.com.pe and was so surprised to discover the large number of Japanese-Peruvian models there!

I hope someone can enlighten me... :)

PARAGUAY used to be known as one of the weakest nations participating in MU every year.

However, it seems that the year 2002 will be different for this South American nation. Paraguay usually sends weak representatives. But lo and behold, (Lara's trademark term! hehe :)) look at this year's representative...

Maria Gabriela Riquelme Escuna
AGE: 20
HEIGHT: 5 feet 10 inches
HOWMETOWN: Asuncion
http://www.globalbeauties.com/gb/gbl/IntlMisc/RS01_paramain.jpg

With her stunning looks, Gabriela could make history by being the 3rd ever Paraguayan to make it to MU.

The last to make it in the MU semi-finals was Vivian Benitez, in 1991.

The first and only (so far) to win a MU special award was Pamela Zarza. She won the National Costume Award in MU92.

Lara, thanks for the correction, re Miss Taiwan. Medyo mas Chinese nga talaga ang mga contestants from PROC. I hope they do find a Zhang Ziyi amongst their contestants.

Madame Stella as an expert? I have my doubts. Sayang Mama Rene has already turned her back on beauty pageants. Stunning yung mga alaga niya. I bet, she could have encouraged her alaga Phoemela to join, kung involved pa siya, IMHO.

Jensie, based on the pic you posted, Miss Paraguay looks beautiful, indeed! Medyo Latina version siya ni Evalina, IMHO. Based lang sa isang picture na yan. I hope she lives up to my expectations come MU.

To answer your question, you're in luck. I did a college paper on Asian immigration. To start, Japanese began migrating to other parts of the world in 1868, when it proclaimed itself "open" to the rest of the world (abandoned its close door policy). Its rural population (which was more predominant during that time) made itself possible especially to the needs of the outside world in the latter's Industrial Revolution.

The first wave (1860s) of 200 workers went to Hawaii and Guam as sugar plantaion workers. The Meiji government, however, decided to stop further export of labor becuase of reported "subhuman" working conditions. Instead, the latter batch was sent to Hokkaido, the country's northernmost island. Then, in 1889, Hawaii and Japan signed an agreement sending 29,000 workers to Hawaii sugar plantations under 3 year contracts. Most of the Japs did that exactly; they didn't settle in Hawaii but became dekasagi workers (sort of OFWs, pagnakaipon na, umuuwi balik sa Japan).

The Meiji's next step was to build overseas "colonies" inorder to expand their territory for surplus goods and labor. The plan in 1897 of building one in Mexico failed. This didn't deter them, further sending 790 people in Peru. The difference between Hawaii with Peru is that The Japanese in Peru chose to stay in Peru. Further, up to 6 waves of immigrants left Japan for Peru, totalling over 6,000. Only in 1923 was Japanese immigration to Peru abolished. By that time, Japanese immigrants have established themselves and have spawned generations. I think Mr. Fujimori is already a 4th generation Jala (Japones-Latino).

Hope that helps! :D

Yup I agree! Our culture is soooo rich... Kailangan lang talaga nating mag-explore pa... there are endless possibilities! Yun nga lang... our very own designers are not given the chance to use their talents...

Unfortunately, I've heard numerous inside reports that our MU2002 representative's evening gown and national costume will be taken care of either by Colombian deisgner Alfredo Barraza or by the House of Halston. Her personal wardrobe will be taken care of naman by Madame Stella herself-- take note: She went abroad just to shop!

Take a peek into these stunning Venezuelan Miss World representatives. I wonder why they failed to make it to the Top 10 during their respective years...

1997- Christiina Dieckmann Jimenez

1998- Veronica Schneider Rodriguez

2001- Andreina Prieto Rincon
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant91/pageant91_image3.jpg

Miss World surely lives up to its reputation as the most UNPREDICTABLE beauty pageant that ever existed!

TRIVIA: Christiina and Veronica are both half-German, Vanessa is half-Chilean while Andreina is pure Venezuelan. :)

baby_boi: My source told me that the Press Presentation tomorrow is strictly for the press and media. HOWEVER, since it's gonna take place in an open area naman (Century Park's pool area), be discreet na na lang daw if ever you're really planning to go. Bahala ka na sa diskarteng gagawin mo!

Saka there's nothing to lose naman eh... your place is just around the corner... :)

Good luck! If ever matuloy ka nga, please post na lang the happenings here! Saka share your fearless forecast regarding who you think will win! Thanks! :)

THE SWIMSUIT DEBATE: 1-PIECE OR 2-PIECE?

After seeing the Bb. Pilipinas 2002 Press Presentation pics (thanks to Zack!:)), I was able to make a very important conclusion...

I believe it'll be better if all 23 official candidates wear ONE-PIECE SWIMSUITS during the Coronation Night.

This is the ONLY option available for all of them. Coincidentally, it also happens to be the BEST.

Generally speaking, their swimsuit shots in the official website was a disaster. Pero after today's press presentation, marami ang nakabawi. Bing Alto is one. Des Magno is another. Karen naman, looked hotter! I hope tuluy-tuloy na yang improvement na yan. At least some were able to redeem themselves...

Our MU2002 rep should opt for a ONE-PIECE during this year's upcoming Presentation Show.

Di bale nang mag 2-piece siya sa funshots, photo shoots at taping sessions. Wag lang sa Presentation Show because that's an entirely different story! For Filipina MU reps, I believe mas make-or-break ang swimsuit competition kesa sa evening gown at interview competitions.

Nina Ricci and Zorah both wore 2-piece swimsuits during their respective presentation shows. Let's face it, they were both stunning indeed! But I hate to admit na ito ang talagang humatak pababa sa kanilang mga preliminary composite averages.

http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant95/pageant95_image3.jpg
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant95/pageant95_image1.jpg

Well, as if they had the freedom to choose what to wear... Kahit na sa mga bagay na ito, si Madame Stella pa rin ang may last say! Obviously, they were ordered to wear 2-piece swimsuits. They could have really scored higher had they worn 1-piece swimsuits.

This year, it's about time we learned from our past mistakes. Our rep should strictly stick to a 1-piece for BOTH the Presentation Show and Finals Night (if she indeed makes the Top 10).

(Remember Miriam 3 years ago? She was a real standout kahit na 1-piece lang ang sinuot niya-- no questions over that. May VA VA VOOM pa rin kahit na 1-piece lang.)
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant95/pageant95_image2.jpg

In my opinion, a 1-piece will ALWAYS and FOREVER PERFECTLY emphasize the Asian figure.

very nice pics Jensie, look at Nina's hair? Medyo sablay sa kanya at di bagay. I think one of the things that spoiled our chances was the hair. Pati yung kay Zora din, especially her hair during her evening gown (yung naka bun). the hair for her nga was during the final night in the evening gown competition where she paraded with her hair down, very silky and very shiny. Ang ganda!!! Her hair sa swimsuit presentation was kinda flat. that's a no no. But in fairness to Zora and Nina, they have the "K" to wear a two piece.

Mas ok for me kung two-piece ang suotin ng Bb. Pilipinas Universe natin. I thought Zorah looked great in her swimsuit.. Mas nagkaroon ng curve after her training in Venezuela. Yung hair lang talaga ang problema. :bungi:

Quite funny that some of our girls gumaganda kapag tapos na, especially si Zora, she really shined during the final night when she failed the top 10. And Zora in her 2 piece, she's great in her two piece but her hips look kinda big in the pic. Add ko lang kay Nina, her hair was too flat that's the problem.

Well sad to say, Nina's disastrous hair and make-up was a result of Madame Stella's "instructions" to pattern them both after that of Latin and Venezuelan beauties, specifically Claudia Moreno.

(to think professional make-up artist and expert siya ha!) Tapos to make things worst, ultimo make-up at hairstyle niya, dinikta pa talaga kung papaano dapat gawin...

Lara, I agree that both Nina and Zorah had the "K" to wear 2-piece swimsuits.

No need to sourgrape, hope for the best nalang this year- yes it is a waste. Well, told you Madame Stella walang believe sa Pinoy and how VERY STUPID of her to copy the Latinas, obvious naman ang style nila hindi pwede sa mga Asians. Perhaps Zora told you this about Nina no? I think si Colombian "has been" is making our girls more Latina than Pinoy. Wala ngang originality and all she does is copy things here and there- pati headshots this year diba?

Hi guys! I just wanted to share...

I was surfin' kanina sa official U.S. Embassy Manila website. Inutusan kasi ako ng mom kong mag-print ng guidelines and FAQs regarding the non-immigrant and tourist US visa applications. Napaka-complicated pala talaga ng process noh?

Parang natatawa ako kasi yung Bb. Pilipinas Universe every year ay isang araw lang ang kailangang hintayin. The next day, tapos na lahat ng papers niya for travel to the States. Isang tawag lang ni Madame Stella ay ayos na. Unknown to many, she's the charges d'affaires of the Embassy of Colombia, which happnes to be located at the Araneta Center din. :)

Si Joanne Santos at Nina Ricci Alagao lang ang alam kong mga Bb. Pilipinas Universe na hindi dumaan sa U.S. during their respective trips to Miss Universe (as of recent memory lang ha). Joanne boarded a PAL flight en route to Frankfurt, Germany. From there, she boarded an Air Namibia flight direct to Windhoek. Nina Ricci naman, I believe, boarded a PAL flight to Dubai. From there, she took a Cyprus Airways flight direct to Nicosia.

Charlene went to the U.S. to participate in the crowning of Miss USA 1994, where Lu Parker eventually won. Charlene also supported then-Miss Hawaii Nadine Tañega, who happens to be a Caviteña by blood.

Aileen, Abbygale and Jewel all flew to the States for their respective MU pageants.

Miriam and Zorah passed by the States because they had a stopover in Miami for last minute instructions from Arturo Marquez, Madame Stella's bro. Saka it's in Miami where they both got to see their evening gowns and national costumes.

Miriam and Zorah both took the Manila-Los Angeles direct flight via PAL. From Los Angeles, American Airlines flight direct to Miami. From Miami, American Airlines flight uli direct to Caracas.

I forgot what airline Zorah took when she flew from Caracas to San Juan. Basta ang alam ko is American Airlines from San Juan to Miami the day after the coronation night.

I dunno Miriam's airline from Caracas to Port of Spain and from Port of Spain to New York nung pauwi na siya.

Hmmm... lemme see...

If Lakambini Alto bags the Bb. Pilipinas Universe crown, I believe dapat talagang mag 2-piece siya sa MU2002 Presentation Show. There's just something about her na bumabagay sa kanyang magsuot ng 2-piece.

BUT, if fate and destiny rule in favor of Karen Agustin, I believe she must really wear a 1-piece during the Presentation Show. In case she indeed makes it to the Top 10, saka na lang siya mag 2-piece dun. Di ba? :)

Venezuelan training would definitely not hurt! Our MU bet this year should be sent to La Quinta!

Ritu Kumar’s fashion collection for the participants of the Femina Miss India contest 2002 is inspired by the aesthetics of the Kutch region. Striking red and gold and brighter hues of vibrant colours make a bold statement. The bandhini patterns are ablaze with gold and sparkling with mirrors, much like the embellishments used in the desert land. The silhouettes include trouser suits and saris with sexy tops inspired by the Rabari nomads, and peshwaz like those worn by the Lohar community. The line has a contemporary feel, yet remains Indian in its essence.

Nice costumes! Thanks din for Madhu's national costume!

Ritu Kumar is the designer responsible for the evening gowns, cocktail dresses and national costumes worn by almost all Femina Miss India winners (Universe, World & Asia Pacific) to their respective international pageants from 1994-2001.

Ang hindi lang ata ay si Yukta Mookhey, whose gown and personal wardrobe were all created by Hermant Trivedi.

A NEW LOOK FOR THE MISS UNIVERSE CROWN

http://www.bellezavenezolana.com/images/corona.JPG

This year, the Miss Universe crown will sport a new look. The new crown will feature precious Japanese pearls from big sponsor Mikimoto.

Apparently, Denise Quiñones modelled the new crown during her recent travel to Mikimoto's headquarters.

The new crown is smaller than the existing one. Denise will be the last Miss Universe to wear the crown with rhinestones.

DENISE SET TO PERFORM IN MU2002

http://www.bellezavenezolana.com/images/denisesinger.jpg

Just like her fellow Puerto Rican Dayanara Torres exactly 8 years ago, Denise Quiñones is set to make her musical debut when she performs live during the finals night of MU2002. She is now undergoing intense preparations to make her debut a memorable and special one.

This is definitely something to look forward to come May. :)

The last outgoing Miss Universe to make a musical debut was Wendy Fitzwilliam of Trinidad & Tobago, when she sang excerpts from a single from her debut album during her farewell walk in MU99.

Miss Deutschland 2002 Natascha Borger has postponed her trip this week to Caracas. She will be flying instead right after the Holy Week.

Natascha is flying to her "hometown" upon the invitation of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Humboldt Foundation, both based in Caracas.

She will also undergo intense preparations for MU2002. She will take a peek into her personal wardrobe and evening gown-- all taken care of by a top local designer.

Thanks for posting the pics of some candidates vying for the Miss Thailand Universe 2002 crown.

In my opinion, mas magaganda pa rin, generally speaking, yung Bb. Pilipinas 2002 candidates natin compared to them. What do you think?

Meet Lorena Ayala Van Heerde, Spain's bet for this year's Miss Universe pageant. She's 18 years old and stands 5 feet 10 inches. She's one of this year's strongest bi-racial contenders for the coveted crown.

Despite being born of a Dutch father, Lorena inherited her mother's strong Castillian features, which is why she is such a stunner!

She is now undergoing intense preparations to become Spain's 2nd Miss Universe winner in 28 years.

I could not imagine Miss Universe without that crown, I hope these are just rumors. Saka come to think of it, if they were planning to change the Miss Universe crown then they should have changed the Miss USA crown firstt right? Waht would the alleged "new" crown look like with pearls?

She strongly reminds me of Dayanara Torres! GOODLUCK SAMANTHA! :)

If she wins tomorrow night, she will represent Nueva Esparta in the Miss Venezuela 2002 pageant set for September 18, 2002, Wednesday at the Poliedro de Caracas.

Also if she indeed wins, she'll automatically be one of my bets for the title of Miss Venezuela 2002.

She is Anna Rigon, 24 years old and stands 5 feet 9.5 inches.

Anna was crowned The Miss for Miss Universe 2002 last year. This awards her the right to represent Italy in the 2002 Miss Universe pageant set for May 29 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Let's all see if Anna will be Italy's first semi-finalist in 5 years.

The last Italian to make it was Denny Mendez, during MU97. It has not won any MU crown yet.

Moises Kaswan, an Israeli-born orthodontist, examines this stunning lady's teeth and smile. She has earlier signed up for the coveted Miss Venezuela 2002 pageant. Osmel Sousa, head of Organizacion Miss Venezuela, looks on...

If she satisfies the taste and requirements of Osmel, she will be then designated a particular state, wherein she will compete in its state pageant. If she wins it, she'll be on her way to the Miss Venezuela 2002 pageant. As we all know, this pageant (known as the Mother of all pageants in Venezuela) will select the country's representatives to Miss Universe 2003 and Miss International 2002.

Rehearsals. . .

http://mabuhaybeauties.com/rehearsal5a.jpg

FROM MABUHAY MB

Bb. Pilipinas 2002 Technical Rehearsal Highlights
by Ed Saludes, Gerry Diaz, and Fidelio Blas

1. Maricar Balagtas, Miss Globe 2001, who will play the role of the forest nymph during the opening number had to beg off from the rehearsal due to a minor accident that happened today. She had a 1 1/2 inch scar behind her right ear which resulted from the said accident. Together with a BPCI staff, she went to QCMH for skull x-ray. Despite of the incident, she still looks poised and very radiant.

2. While waiting for a GMA staff, we saw the other four reigning queens, Zora, Michelle, Rhea and Maricarl leaving the Araneta Coliseum. Earlier that day, they attended a charity event.

3. Parade of Beauties was cancelled due to unknown reason. This event will finally be held tomorrow at 3pm.

4. How sweet it was for Sheila Alonso to go out her way and greeted us. She is one of the favorites of the male dancers who will be performing with the official candidates during the opening number.

5. We learned that Sherilyn Parcon was Bb. La-Salle Dasmarinas two years ago. Gerry Diaz had a brief chat with her.

6. Kate Manalo was busy toying with her palm pilot. She also loves eating chocolates. Criselda Osorio and Kate are unseparable during the rehearsal.

7. Criselda Osorio's mom is Bb. Pilipinas 1973 semifinalist, Maria Nenita Parawan. She had a ****-a-**** with Mabuhay's Boyet Blas. Her aunt happened to be the former PRO of Lea Productions - Boyet Blas' family owned now-inactive film production outfit.

8. Much thanks to Bang Arespacopachaga for giving us the permission to cover the technical rehearsal. She is an exec producer from GMA-7.

9. It was fun watching the girls doing their routines on stage. Their choreographer who is a very perfectionist person that a single mistake will not pass her strict eyes unnoticed. Guess who commited the most mistakes?

10. The following girls are still in their best forms despite of the rigorous schedule and tedious rehearsals that they are doing :
Lou Magno, Jazel Manalac, Kate Manalo and Margarita Bayot.

MISS MALAYSIA/UNIVERSE PAGEANT 2002
Beauty Comes From Within, Say Hopefuls
By Sharen Kaur mmnews@nstp.com.my

"BEAUTY is like a bonus and it also comes from within a person. Basically, it is a different definition for everyone."

This is what 20-year-old Julia Wong had to say when asked what the word beauty means to her.

"A beauty pageant, on the other hand, is also about charity and raising funds for the needy," said Wong, one of the 12 finalists in the Miss Malaysia/Universe Pageant 2002 to be held on March 22 at Hotel Istana Kuala Lumpur.

"Women take part in a pageant not only to compete and win the title, but to prove that beauty is more than just looking pretty and parading oneself in front of the audiences."

This undergraduate in information technology studies also finds the Internet a useful tool to learn and understand different cultures and languages, and to find out about various topics.

"I took part in this pageant as I wanted to do something special for myself and to gain confidence. I think my fellow contestants and I each stand a good chance of winning," said Wong.

For Ipoh-born Kong Sei Wai, taking part in the pageant means gaining good exposure and experience.

"To me, a pageant is special as I get to meet a lot of people, learn to be punctual and understand cultural values. I also learn grooming and make-up skills, which are important to any woman out there.”

The 23-year-old, who enjoys singing and swimming, stands at 178cm and is the tallest contestant among all.

"This is my second pageant. Last year, I was one of the top six winners in the Miss Perak Beauty Pageant. I decided to take part again to build my self-confidence," said Kong.

Kelantan-born flight stewardess Karen Ang, 25, felt that being a finalist is already an achievement.

"We all have our good qualities and plus points. By making it to the finals, all of us are winners here," she said.

"I had previously taken part in the Miss Malaysia/International 2001 pageant and the experience has served me well for the current pageant."

The only non-Chinese in this year's pageant is Christina Chelliah, a 19-year-old student who comes from a musically-inclined family.

"I love singing and dancing since I was a child. Besides that, I enjoy reading. These are the things I do to fill my time," she said.

Chelliah previously took part in the Miss Pahang/World 2001 beauty contest and was fourth runner-up. She also won the Miss Photogenic title.

"There were people who were surprised when I told them that I was taking part in a beauty pageant,” she said.

“They thought that I had not done well in my studies. They told me only bimbos take part in such a pageant. I want to change their perception. This is why I took part.”

The winner will represent Malaysia at the 51st Miss Universe Pageant in San Juan, Puerto Rico from mid-April to mid-May this year.

Prizes for the Malaysia winner are RM5,000 cash, a crystal trophy, a complete wardrobe worth RM40,000 specially designed by a local designer, VISS shoes, a Carlo Cardini timepiece, Marigold products hamper and assignments during her reign in the region of RM30,000.

Ten subsidiary titles will be awarded, namely, Miss Marigold Body Beautiful, Miss Marigold Fresh Look of The Year, Miss Carlo Cardini, Miss Pola Natural Beauty, Miss Thomas & Guys Crowning Glory, Miss Praise Slim & Beauty, Miss Love & Lace Photogenic, Miss VISS Sexy Legs, Miss VIOR Personality, and Miss Congeniality.

Miss Japan 2002 and the first runner-up will be in Kuala Lumpur to grace the Miss Malaysia/Universe finals on March 22.

FEILANI BENNETT
Miss Asia USA 2001
Miss World USA 2000 Semifinalist
Hollywood Actress/Model
Child Tutor
Filipina-American

Early this year, she went back to Manila to retrace her roots. This Fil-American beauty who was born in Seattle, WA had always had a soft spot for the Philippines where she spent her formative years (her dad was in the US military), graduating there in high school.

In an interview she said, "The Philippines had a strong influence on me, because there's so much I learned there culture wise, and it taught me to appreciate things in the United States like "safeway". It is also where I learned to speak Tagalog." "Although I was born and raised in the US and am half-Filipino, I consider myself full Asian, because I am also one fourth Chinese," she added.

Her decision to join Bb. Pilipinas came out of the blue, says one of her Los Angelss based supporters. She never really planned on joining a pageant in the Philippines but was encouraged to do so by a mutual friend who knew her LA mentor and discoverer , Monet Lu - known in Fil-Am pageant circles as an "undisputed queen maker."

Banking on her past pageant experiences, primarily as Miss Asia USA 2001, Feilani thought she had a good chance of being included in the final list of candidates. Not to everyone's surprise, she made the official list.

Clearly, sources were saying she commanded a strong presence in the final screening. With her hair pulled back and flowers in her hair (her name in Hawaiian means "flowers"), flawless skin she was impressionable. The exotic looking Filipina/Chinese/American was on her way to compete in the Philippines' most prestigious beauty pagean, which thrilled her to no end.

But things it seemed were not meant to be. Her agent got the call two days after the final screening results were released that it was a no- go for her as apparently she lacked the 6 month residency rule required to join the pageant. Initially, the unfortunate news affected Bennett. But then, she would later take it with a grain of salt realizing that God has better plans for her.

Currently, Feilani Bennett is still in the Philippines enjoying a reconnection to her Pinoy roots - which was what she came back for in the first place. Again people are telling her to join another forthcoming Philippine pageant -
Miss Philippines Earth - a pageant that is more open and accepting of Fil-American beauties. Bennett, remains undecided even as we are writing this.

Will we see a beauty and brains the likes of Feilani Bennett again this time at Miss Philippines- Earth? Was it someone who just said, "It ain't over till its over." So stay tuned.

Aloha and Mabuhay Feilani !!

PHILIPPINES TO HOST MISS UNIVERSE 2004?
http://freepages.outdoors.rootsweb.com/~sunshinegal/stellajorge.jpg
Jorge and Stella Araneta : POWER COUPLE OF THE HOUR

Heard thru the grapevine and persistent whispers at Tuesday's Bb. Pilipinas 2002 Press Presentation was the talk of a Miss Universe Pageant Manila comeback in 2004.

While the talks are unconfirmed and remain as speculations, there have been earlier rumors that Jorge Araneta broached out the idea of the Philippines hosting the 2002 event to Donald Trump himself when the two met up at the Miss Universe Pageant in San Juan last May.

The move to host the pageant according to reliable sources will entail a joint effort among private Philippine groups (Araneta Group of Companies)and other interested parties to put up the necessary funds needed to bankroll the event.

The Miss Universe 2003 Philippine hosting speculations were furthered relived early this week when the Araneta Group of Companies annouced that they are putting up a P2 billion shopping mall at the Araneta Center in Cubao. Mr. Araneta who is the Araneta Grp Chairman and President said the mall project is part of the 20 year master plan started in 2000 to transform the Araneta Center into a business district that can go head to head with similar developments in Ortigas and Makati. Construction for the mall has recently started and Araneta further revealed it is an entertaiment oriented mall which will have a Cineplex of 10 - 12 theaters once completed. Construction of the mall is expected to finish by December of 2003.

Sources are speculating that Araneta wants to host the Miss Universe 2004 Pageant to showcase the new 100,000 square meters mall to be called the Gateway Millenium Mall -part of the Araneta' Grp's plans to polish the tarnished image of the Quezon City based retail complex.

Other related tidbits annouced by Jorge Araneta this week:
~While planning for the Master Plan of the mall and other Araneta Center redevelopment projects, Jorge Araneta and architect planners considered demolishing the Araneta Coliseum. Araneta said the Coliseum is a money losing venture , never making money since its opening in 1960. In the end though, a decision was reached to retain the Coliseum for sentimental reasons.

~Ali Mall Renovation is currently ongoing to the tune of P150m. Eventually though the mall complex named after the great boxer Muhammad Ali will be torn down to give way for a bigger and modern mall in 10-15 years time.

~The New Frontier Theatre at the Araneta Center will be renovated into an entertainment type theater for live shows.
The project's development is ongoing with the help of Cirque show producer, Neil Goldberg, whose circus/magic group recently held shows at the Araneta Center.

Will Filipinos be afforded the chance to host the Miss Universe Pageant in 2004? Meantime, its a wait and see attitude. Hope for a fruitful outcome just like we do with our yearly batch of Bb. Pilipinas queens.

Lara: Thanks for the articles regarding the Misses Jamaica and Malaysia Universe pageants.

The new Miss Turkey is beautiful indeed. Let's see how she does come May. If she makes it to the semi-finals, she'll be the 3rd ever Turkish representative to make it in MU. The last to make it was Julide Ates during MU90. Turkey has won only one special award, which happens to be the Congeniality Award during MU98. Asuman Krause won it.

Thanks for the pics of Diana and Carolina during Batimamselle. I have a big pic of them with Miriam and Angela Ukpoma (Miss Nigeria '99) wearing pink dresses. Once I find it, I'll post it agad here.

expilliarmus18: Thanks for the article on RP's alleged bid to host MU2004. Lara, I told you so... may plano nga talaga ang Pinas na mag-host ng MU sa 2004... In case matuloy nga, the girl to watch out for will be Miss Greece! Remember, the Olympics will be hosted by Athens in 2004! If ever Miss Greece wins MU2004, she will get to participate during the Olypmics Opening Ceremonies.

To add to Lara's post on the new set of Miss Turkey winners...

Last night, the Miss Turkey 2002 pageant took place in the city of istanbul with a total of 20 beauties participating.

Crowned Miss Turkey 2002 was Azra Akin, 20 years old and 5 feet 10 inches tall. She will represent her country in Miss World 2002.

1st runner-up was Cagla Kubat, 23 years old and 5 feet 11 inches tall. She will represent her country in Miss Universe 2002 set for May 29 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

2nd runner-up was Esra Eron. She will represent her country in the Miss Europe 2002 pageant set for December.

Completing the Top 5 were Nihan Akkus and Melikke Akkaya. It still cannot be known as of the moment who among the two will represent Turkey will in Miss International 2002, set for October in Tokyo, Japan.

Colombian diva Shakira performed during the pageant's coronation night.

--Turkey obviously does not prioritize the Miss Universe pageant. The winner goes to Miss World. 1st runner-up lang yung sa MU.

a ok. so the Turkish runner up would go to Miss Universe lang pala, bummer. But she is the tallest among the three. Regarding the Turkish girls sa Miss Universe, IMHO, the two most beautiful gals that represented Turkey is Misses turkey 1998 and 2001, maganda gown ni 1998 but sobrang Turkish influenced ang gown ni 2001, di ma apreciate ng mga Western judges. to bad, but she was a bomb during the swimsuit competition.

Yup I agree. Sedef's swimsuit performance was a blast! It was clearly her gown that did her...too bad.

Miss World 2nd runner-up 2000 Yuksel Ak should really give the Miss Universe pageant a try. She's stunning and elegant.

Another girl that was also a stunner and has very great catwalk skills but she lacked zeal and energy while competing that's why she failed to make it. Aside from Miss Greece, Miss Switzerland has one of the best catwalk skills. And to think her gown was really recycled, but SHE knew how to carry it well, very well!!!!

Jensie,

Mukhang exciting ang Bb Pilipinas dahil sa Hosts palang eh pampagana na. I can't wait for these two placers for the 90s. Goodluck to both of them and I know they know how to cary themselves very well. Both of them are one of the classiest Filipinas who became a Finalist in the early 90s and a Runner up in the late 90s.

There are only 10 official candidates vying for the Miss Guatemala Universo 2002 crown.

Here's my bet to win: CANDIDATE #5 Soraya Elynor Martinez Valdez
AGE: 22
HEIGHT: 5 feet 5 inches
WEIGHT: 110 lbs.
http://www.globalbeauties.com/gb/gbl/MexGuate/GT02_elyonor.jpg http://www.globalbeauties.com/gb/gbl/CA/GT02_5.jpg

Soraya may be short but among the 10 official candidates, she definitely has the most pageant experience. She's the reigning Miss World University Guatemala 2001. After all, Guatemalans are known for sending not-so-tall delegates to the Miss Universe pageant.

The Coronation Night for Miss Guatemala Universo 2002 is on March 19, 2002, Tuesday.

MISS BRASIL 2002
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant103/pageant103_image1.jpg

The much-anticipated Miss Brasil 2002 pageant is scheduled for April 13, 2002, Saturday. It was originally scheduled for today (March 16), but was moved to give the candidates ample time to prepare. The exotic city of Rio de Janeiro is hosting this year's pageant. Rede TV will telecast the big event live.

Meet the STRONGEST contenders for this year's coveted crown:

MISS PARANA Keli Kaniak
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant103/pageant103_image2.jpg

MISS RIO GRANDE DO SUL Josiane de Oliveira

http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant104/pageant104_image1.jpg http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant104/pageant104_image2.jpg

Any of these 3 stunning beauties will definitely give Venezuela, Colombia, Germany, USA and other MU2002 contestants a very hard time. This year's Miss Brasil pageant will go down in history as one of the toughest ever.

The Miss Brasil 2002 winner will go to MU2002 set for May 29 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The 1st runner-up will go to Miss International 2002 set for October in Tokyo, Japan. Either the 2nd runner-up or 3rd runner-up will go to Miss Earth 2002 set also for October in Manila, Philippines.

A separate pageant called Miss Mundo Brasil will be held sometime in September to select the South American nation's representative for MW2002.

PANAMA IS ALL SET TO HOST MU2003
http://www.chagres.com/panflg_m.gif

In commemoration of its Centennial Celebration next year, the Republic of Panama is dead serious in bringing back the coveted Miss Universe pageant into its shores. It hosted the 1986 Miss Universe pageant.

Panama submitted its proposal to host MU2003 yesterday. Others that submitted theirs were Venezuela, Chile, the USA and the Peoples' Republic of China. MUI is set to hand down its verdict on Monday (March 18). However, it will be kept secret.

The Panamanian Host Committee has indicated in its proposal that the prospective MU2003 pageant will take place at the Centro de Convenciones del Panama Canal Village in Amador, situated exactly in the entrance of the Pacific Ocean to the Panama Canal in Panama City. Furthermore, it has disclosed that it is shelving a whooping US$ 9.9 million to host the big event.

At this very moment the Centennial Commission of the Republic of Panama, Panamanian Tourism Institute and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry have received necessary information regarding this from the Presidential Cabinet.

MUI will officially announce the 2003 host during the culmination of the MU2002 pageant set for May 29 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

GOOD LUCK to PANAMA! Sana Pinas ang manalong mag-host ng MU2004. Puro countries starting with the letter "P" ah! Puerto Rico (2001-2002), Panama (2003) and the Philippines (2004)... hehe. Sana matuloy talaga! :)

18 year-old sharon Noel from Ratnapura glowed last Saturday night, as she was crowned the first Miss Sri Lanka Universe in five years. Brought up in Dubai until she was 9, she is the product of her Venezuelan father Jaime her Lankan mother Maria. The spectacular gala was held at the Taj Samudra ballroom in downtown Colombo, with a packed house of 400 eager attendees.

A professional model studying Literature at University of Colombo, Sharon's dream is to travel to Europe and model on the runaways of Paris and London, which should not be a problem with her 1.80-meter height and 58-kilo frame.

The twenty finalists competed in swimwear and the designer formalwear section, from which eight finalists were chosen for the question and answer round. The girls gave witty responses to question from the judging panel, which included former Miss Sri Lanka Shivani Wedanayake, fashion photographer Natasha Fernando, entertainment manager Dinnesh Nayakkar and Indian model and beauty queen Shvetha Jayashankar, who flew in from Chennai.

At the end of the night, Sharon Neol was awarded the Miss Sri Lanka Universe title along with the Miss Body Beautiful award, and received her crown from Shivanthini Dharmasiri1, our last representative in Miss Universe. Coming in second was Sumithra
Amarasinghe from Kandy, and Rajmata Hariram from Colombo came in third. Miss Personality was Melani Codipilly, while Miss Photogenic was Deeshani Kodithuwakku.

The guests of honor were the beautiful Miss Universe 1999 Lara Dutta and veteran actor Sanath Gunatileke. Sharon will follow in Lara's footsteps, as this May she will travel to Puerto Rico for the Miss Universe Contest.

Sana matalbugan ng Sri Lanka ang India this year. Sri Lanka has always been the underdogs. These two south asian countries are sort of rivals in Miss Universe, in a friendly sort of way. May edge pa siya kay Neha, 1.80 m siya!!!! Hope she knows to talk the talk.

(just like what I correctly predicted loooong before) I just like to point out that the Bb.
