Hi Lara! :)
It is very, very clear that they are patterning Isis's aura and look after that of Denise. This picture speaks for itself. Laking tawa ko lang pag wala siya sa top 10 on May 29... :D
Anna Rigon is such a stunner. Can she break the dry spell for Italy? It's been 5 years na since this nation last made it to the finals.

Anna's "sharp features" strongly remind me of Lorena Bernal Pascual.

My original bet was Teina Tamada too. However, if she indeed wins Miss Japan Universe 2002, she cannot compete in MU2002. Click on her profile. She's already 27 years old.
According to MUI, MISS UNIVERSE® delegates must be at least 18 years of age and under 27 years of age by February 1st in the year they compete in the national competition.

Too bad for Teina... What a waste! :)
Anyway, marami pa namang magaganda eh. :)

Since Japan got a new franchise holder, they've been sending stunning delegates. Hoping this would happen here.

HI Guissepe, Lara, Jensie and to others
Ganda ng mga pics na pinost niyo. Di ko nga naipost yung picture ni Miss California when she won Miss USA 10 yrs ago. Re Miss Puerto Rico Isis Casalduc, she is now being patterned to look like Denise. Eto lang assumption ko. Since Puerto Rico will host again the Miss Universe, baka di mapasama sa top ten ang host country para ma win back nila the credibility that they've lost last year.
For me, I'm looking forward for a better and tougher competition this year sa Binibining Pilipinas.
Miss Japan will select na pala a delegate for the MU. Anyhow, sayang yung Teina Tamada. Strong contender pero overage na siya. nakakahinayang. I want to see Miss Japan sa top ten this year sa MU para maiba iba naman. As for me, here's my bet. :D

2 more judges added for Miss USA- hindi ko sila kilala.... hehehe
Audrey Quock
Audrey Quock is the only Asian American supermodel in the country. Her sexy layouts in the 1999, 2000, 2001 and now the 2002 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issues are testaments. Prior to her appearance in Sports Illustrated, Audrey had appeared in music videos for artists such as Julio Iglesias, George Michael, and Heavy D. Many people know her face from the Cover Girl Cosmetics print and television commercials, in which she appeared with Tyra Banks and Nikki Taylor. Audrey was featured in Autumn In New York and most recently was seen in Rush Hour II.
Nikki Ziering
A Southern California native with the classic California look, it was only a matter of time before Nikki Ziering set out on a career in showbiz. Every weekday millions of Americans see Nikki on CBS’s The Price Is Right, but in February, America will see her in a different light when she hits the big screen in Servicing Sarah opposite Matthew Perry and Elizabeth Hurley. She has also appeared on Love Boat, Beverly Hills 90210, Silk Stalkings, Young and the Restless, Pacific Blue, VIP, Mike Hammer, Babylon 5, and Black Scorpion.

Maganda yang si Teina. Too bad if she can't join Miss U if she wins Miss Japan. Kayi Hiroko na lang ako siguro. Or kay Yuki.
Baka di pwede ang international votes for Miss USA. Sa tingin nyo? Try ako mag-reg later.
Sali rin ako sa pagtawa kung matalo yang si Isis. But well, kung talagang pinapattern after Denise, hmm..... Isama nyo na rin ang laking tawa ko pag di nasali si Cynthia (Miss V).
JENSIE: Balitaan mo naman kami RE: Bb. Pilipinas screenings. Especially the last day, kung andun ka. I bet, parang COMELEC registration yan, maraming pahabol.
Maganda yang si Miss Italy. May vavavoom. Naku, pakonti na nang pakonti ang slots sa top 10. Hmmm....come to think of it, gaya ng sabi ni JENSIE, strong/sharp ang features ni Anna. Will strong features also help a rumored Bb. Pilipinas hopeful, by the name of TELISHA JEAN???? Abangan......

The Bb. Pilipinas 2002 Preliminary Screening takes place today, 2 PM sharp at the Araneta Coliseum. Today, the 105 aspirants will be trimmed down to around 60.
The Final Screening is scheduled tomorrow, 1 PM sharp at the Araneta Food Dome. Late na ng gabi ito matatapos. The 60 aspirants will be further trimmed down to just 25-30. They then become this year's official candidates.
The final screening is a closed-door affair. Madame Stella de Araneta, together with BPCI Board of Trustees, will be responsible for selecting the official candidates. Brace yourselves and hope for the best! :)
LATEST UPDATES:
Imee Martinez, Hergielyn Dimagiba, and Maricar Balagtas are NOT joining. This was confirmed to me a while ago.
TOMORROW IS JUDGMENT DAY: Bing Alto, Jazel Mañalac, Louise Magno, Karren Evangelista, Gia Aranas, Sheila Alonso, May Fortes, TJ Arguelles, Gilmarie Pacamara, Margie Bayot, Laarni Rivera and Mary Anne Samiado are all expected to make it to the "official" candidates roster. Stay tuned. :)
The Bb. Pilipinas official website will be updated for the 2002 batch right after the newly-selected official candidates' number tag assignments have been finalized. Perhaps by the first week of March, it'll be up na... remember, may Miss Internet voting pa yan. :)

Actually di nga nananalo parati ang mga African countries sa Miss World. when Miss Nigeria won last year, she was the first black African to win Miss World. NAunahan sila ng Miss UNiverse kasi si Mpule nung 1999 was the first black African to win Miss Universe. Dapat ang tanong mo is, how come puro puti lang ang nananalo sa Miss World? Kasi the only Asian country to win Miss World is only India and wala nang iba.

Hi again Lara! :)
India ('66, '94, '97, '99, '00) and Israel ('98) are the only Asian countries that have won in MW .
giddy: Egypt ('54), South Africa ('58, '74) and Nigeria ('01) are the only African countries that have won in MW.
And Lara's correct.. Nigeria holds the record for being the first African nation with a black winner in Miss World. Mpule of Botswana was the 1st black African winner in Miss Universe.
Trivia lang... :)
Botswana is the only land-locked country to have won in Miss Universe's 50 years of existence.
Austria, on the other hand, is the only land-locked country to have won in Miss World.
No land-locked country has ever won in Miss International.

Well regarding about the Bb. Pilipinas screening, I'm not that excited nor nervous. Kasi if ever that "Colombian Has Been" and her minions would make a booboo again (at di nanaman tayo nakapasok sa Miss U kasi mali ang pinili nila or mali ang mga pinaggagawa nila)- serves her right. Madami nanaman countries diyan ang pwedeng pagpilian for the top 10 eh. But I'm still keeping my hopes up nalang. But I'm not expecting.

What happens during the Bb. Pilipinas Final Screening?
-featuring pictures from last year's pageant... :)
During the final screening, the 60 remaining aspirants (which have been previously selected from the original 100 plus aspirants during the preliminary screening) troop to the Araneta Center Food Dome. They face Madame Stella de Araneta and members of the BPCI Board of Trustees.
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant62/pageant62_image2.jpg
They parade in swimsuits of their own choice together with the initial number tags they were assigned with during their earlier screenings. They then individually introduce themselves. They add more personal info about themselves-- ex. talents, hobbies, likes, dislikes... etc... etc...
Joanne Angeles aka Joey Mead (2nd from right) charms the panel.

FROM LEFT: Romina Calizo, Rosario Torneo, Kristine Alzar, Jeannie Andersen, and Hergielyn Dimagiba
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant63/pageant63_image1.jpg
The only ladies I recognize here are Jeremie Antiporda (2nd from left) and Christina Fandino (rightmost).
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant63/pageant63_image2.jpg
FROM RIGHT: Sheryl Franco, Aline Ramirez, Christine Recio, and an unidentified aspirant
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant64/pageant64_image1.jpg
After the individual introductions and swimsuit presentations, the panel then makes their final decision on who should comprise the official candidate roster.
They narrow down the 60 aspirants into just 30-- only these 30 will find themselves facing the contest's judges on the talent portion and finals night. Their official pictures will eventually be taken and stored, together with their personal profile and measurements, into the updated and official Bb. Pilipinas website.
The moment of truth for last year's newly-selected official candidates...

With tomorrow's final screening, expect a lot of excitement and disappointment. Once the official candidates roster is released... mabilis na ang lahat... and before we know it, coronation night na. :)

THE eliminations for Miss Jamaica Universe 2002 take place this Sunday at Villa Ronai, Old Stony Hill Road, beginning at 5:00 pm. Over 30 contestants will compete for the 16 places available in the finals and a chance to win $1 million cash, the title Miss Jamaica Universe and an opportunity to be crowned the next Miss Universe at the international finals in Puerto Rico in May.
Since late last year Pulse Ltd, sponsors of the contest, has been conducting an islandwide search to find contestants capable of winning the Miss Universe title, which has attracted a diverse group of beautiful Jamaican young women.
In the last two weeks the search has been stepped up a notch with a TV and print campaign aimed at enlisting Jamaicans to help find the perfect girl. Every Jamaican is a potential Pulse Scout and will receive VIP tickets to the finals as well as gift packages if their contestants become a finalist. If she wins the pageant her scout will receive air tickets for two to Miami.
Nicole Haughton
Miss Jamaica Universe will win a host of gifts and prizes in addition to the $1million cash. She will also win the Miss Universe competition wardrobe and a trip to the international pageant.
The Miss Universe Pageant is 51 years-old this year. It is produced annually by The Trump Organisation and CBS Television. Each, year the pageant moves across the globe to exotic locations. In the last four years, for example, the event was held in Hawaii, Trinidad and Tobago, Cyprus and Puerto Rico.
Jamaica has a proud record at Miss Universe but has never won the crown. Since 1989 when Pulse accepted the franchise, top 10 finalists from Jamaica include Kimberly Mais in 1991, who placed fourth, Sandra Foster in 1989 who placed sixth, and Nicole Haughton in 1999 who placed seventh. Sunday's eliminations will provide the first glimpse of the talent pool from which the winner will come.
Up to this Saturday Pulse will still be looking for Jamaican young ladies who are beautiful in face and body, bright, articulate and possessed of a vivacious personality are encouraged to enter. Entrants must be between the ages of 18-27, must never have been married or had children. Prospective contestants should visit or call Pulse, 38a Trafalgar Road, New Kingston, tel: 968-1089-90, fax: 968-1185 or e-mail: pulse44@kasnet.com.
The Miss Jamaica Universe Pageant is produced by Pulse under licence from the Trump Organisation and CBS Television. The 2002 event is sponsored by Smirnoff, Sacha Cosmetics, Palmolive Botanicals, Zephyrhills, Jergens, the Hilton Hotel, The Jamaica Observer, CVM TV, and the RJR Group.

Zorah advised me not to go anymore, since it's a closed-door affair and matagal pa ito matatapos. However, we might see each other instead today. Her talent scout Jonas will attend the final screening so he might text her na lang for updates.
As we all know, the final screening will begin at 1PM. God knows kailan na matatapos ito. Zorah told me that their final screening began at 3PM last year and ended late at night na. Pero of course it was worth all her energy and strength since she made it to the official candidate roster! :)

Yes, Zorah is going pero sa gabi pa. I believe the only ones allowed to take pictures later are BPCI's official cameramen. I really wouldn't know if the press and other members of the media are invited later because I think the official candidate roster would not be released until tomorrow or Monday.

Katherine Anne Ramos Manalo is 23 years old and stands 5 feet 9 inches. Last year, she was included na in the official candidate roster and Bb. Pilipinas website. However, a couple of days later, she reportedly "backed out" because it was discovered she was a model for Sara Lee, which happened to be a major rival of Avon. And as we all know, Avon happens to be a major Bb. Pilipinas sponsor. Sayang noh?
Pero she's back again this year and there's no stopping her. She's a member of YFC and resides at Tahanan Village, Parañaque-- malapit na naman sayo! :)

rivals?
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/aish_sush/aish_sush_image1.jpg
Rivalry among famous people is not rare. And in this famous case, the cause for rivalry is so much obvious. When 22 young hopefuls gathered at the Goa Renaissance for the Femina Miss India title, one was a little more hopeful. And all knew this girl was going to win. This young girl was none other than Aishwarya. Even Sushmita thought that this girl was destined for that most coveted title. And then stunning things happened. The irony of the whole pageant was that a girl (no doubt beautiful, and this beauty was further endorsed by Miss Universe Incorporate four months later) won the title by giving a dumb answer smartly. (She was asked—"What do you know about the textile heritage of India and what’s your wardrobe like?" She answered, "As far as I know, the textile heritage of India dates back to Gandhi and the khadi movement. And no, my wardrobe has no khadi in it, although I love ethnic clothes.") That this dumb answer (or whatever else) won Sushmita the title was a surprise to everybody; more of a surprise was that Aishwarya lost it. When Aishwarya turned backstage after the crowning, there was absolute silence from well-wishers who did not know how to console her (never having envisaged such a scenario). [See : Alluring Aishwarya]
Four months later another jolt excited the whole of India. On a lovely May Saturday morning (21st May, 1994) a tall Indian woman made India proud by winning the first Miss Universe title for India. This tall woman was Sushmita, an ugly duckling before her teens. Like at the Femina Miss India contest in January where no one expected her to win, she was the dark horse at the Miss Universe pageant as well. And with the title there was intense pressure on Aishwarya to repeat (or equal) Sushmita’s feat at the Miss World contest in November. Aishwarya had been snubbed once at Goa; she would have lost her credibility (by popular consent she was the most beautiful woman) if she could not prove that she was as good as Sushmita (having lost the chance to prove it at Goa) at Sun City (where the Miss World 1994 contest was held). At least on two counts this was rather difficult—1)She was under tremendous pressure 2)An Indian had already won at an international beauty pageant that year- it would have been politically uncomfortable to give the Miss World title to another Indian. And she won over the difficulties. 1994 was the watershed year for Indian beauty business.
Time and again Sushmita and Aishwarya came in a collision course, and the collisions became questions of ego. Sushmita was a girl who learnt that she too was beautiful and no less than Aishwarya, and Aishwarya was a girl who having been deprived once the chance to prove that she was the most beautiful, must now prove that she was as good as Sushmita. This rivalry was not hidden, but obvious and very very public. And all took advantage of this rivalry, especially the media. Coca-cola reined in Sushmita while Aishwarya was already a Pepsi model. Sushmita did Camay (beauty soap), and Aishwarya followed with Lux. With two years of winning the Miss India title, Sushmita’s debut film directed by the respected director Mahesh Bhatt, called Dastak (The knock) came to the theatres. It was a flop and Sushmita’s tinsel town chips went down. It would be some time before her next film would come. Down South Aishwarya was creating her space. She made her debut in South Indian films (ethnically she is a South Indian, ie, Dravidian)—a genre of film which makes very little sense artistically/cinematically, but makes very good sense financially. Most of her initial Dravidian offerings went flop. And it seemed for a while that Aishwarya’s and Sushmita’s fortunes work together. A television serial comedy came out depicting the hilarious rivalry of two neighbours and former college mates- the protagonists were called Sushmita and Aishwarya. Through the years this famed rivalry was made very public with both making sly but indirect remarks against each other. The only saving grace was Femina, the institution which acted as the launching pads for the career graphs of both models. Femina always treated both of them equally

Hi Zack! :)
Who are your 4 bets na ba? Lemme guess... TJ, Bing, Jazel, and Katherine? :) Tama ba?
To help you decide on your remaining 6 bets... why don't you consider Gia Aranas and Louise Magno...? They're both stunners too... remember, the more exotic, the better! You're right with your observation. Croatia is one of the many countries that prioritize Miss World over Miss Universe... Siyempre, sa Miss World binibili ang beauty nila kaya doon sila magi-invest more, di ba?
We have yet to see the representatives of other Eastern European nations such as the Slovak Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria, Estonia and Slovenia...
No Croatian has ever made it to the semis in MU. It has not won any award either.

Nope, no news yet. Zorah has not replied to any of my text messages since 8:30 in the evening kanina.
Personal Touch Pageant Sashes produces the sashes used and worn by the delegates of Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA every year. These are the same sashes that were used in the movies Miss Congeniality and Beautiful.
By the way, these satin sashes have been designed by Holly Hardwick-- the same designer of all the present Bb. Pilipinas crowns.
Yup, inuwi ni Zorah yung delegate sash niya. Yun daw yung suot niya on her flight from San Juan to Miami. Then from Miami to Los Angeles. Inalis niya ito habang nasa flight siya. Sinuot niya uli pagdating sa NAIA coz may press at saka BPCI people na sumundo sa kanya.
I have yet to take a pic of her wearing it. Maybe before she gives away her crown to her successor, sana man lang magka-photo op ako with her wearing her pageant accessories. :)

Jensie, I assume naman Zora would be able to keep her Miss U stuff including here sash?
Now back to the can you compare 1999 and 2001, well it seems naman na the 1999 girls were quite happy. Pero yung sa 2001 naman baka they were just tired. Anything could happen naman before and after those pictures were taken. Saka gonna share pala something, may added bonus yung mga Miss U tapes na pinadala sakin ng friend ko from the US when my friend went to Puerto Rico, it included some video clips na narecord niya from the coverage of Teleonce sa Puerto Rico, yung parang ginawa ng channel 2 dito, like what the delegates been doing, etc. NAkasama dun yung isang short clip ng press conference after the crowning, and when Miss Greece went up tha stage, she was genuinely happy and kept on waving sa Press people. And the tape also included Teleonce interviewing the delegates before they left, well the interviewed delegates who spoke in English like Greece and the Netherlands, said they were quite happy about Denise winning.
And here, remember when sa Press conference here, they acknowledge all the other 9 girls who were in the top 10? Well, Miss Venezuela did not show up during the Press conference. All the 9 girls were there except her. They were calling her nga but di siya dumating, sooo medyo sour grape si Eva.

Yup, Zorah's keeping all her pageant paraphernalia and stuff EXCEPT for the Bb. Pilipinas Universe and Miss Philippines Tourism World crowns themselves, of course. Ni hindi nga pinauwi ever sa kanilang tatlo ang mga korona nila eh. Nasa custody lang ng BPCI the whole time... they only get to wear them for official appearances, functions and affairs.

I've been hearing na ang gusto daw na ipadala ni Madame Stella sa MU2002 ay may super lakas na sex appeal... of course she can be either chinita, morena or mulatta... basta refreshing ang look (to correspond with MUI's "redefined" image) at saka supermodel-like daw ang dating with superb catwalk skills and a flawless "Asian" figure... Ang daming requirements, noh? :) Hehe
There are unconfirmed rumors kasi that the evening gown competition last year called The Runway Show will be retained this year... saka wala pa rin daw Interview competition sa Top 10 just like those of MU2000 and MU2001...kaya our representative must take the Blue Point Swimsuit and Runway Show Evening Gown competitions by storm.
Basta one thing for sure is our Bb. Pilipinas Universe this year will be sent abroad to train for 2 weeks before proceeding to San Juan... hindi lang nga tayo sure kung sa Mumbai or Caracas.

I think when Miss Norway said, "the land of the olympics" was because in 1994 they hosted the Winter Olympics, they did not use that again. But they're the ones who carry the title, "Land of the Fjords."

Well, regarding my bets for Bb. I need to hear them speak pa. And Jensie, I think DAPAT lang mataas ang standards ni Madame Stella regarding who is she going to send to Puerto Rico!!! And for the first time, SHE'S on the right track!!!!!! Saka regarding the catwalk skills, I think for some girls, they don't learn it eh, as in "inborn" nalang sa kanila. If you know how to carry yourself saka may confidence ka, madali na yun. Evelina lang ang girl na masasabi ko na wasn't trying hard when she walked down that ramp last year... dapat the girls should watch the F Channel. hehehe But, remember nung 1999, ang nagpahatak kay Mirriam, wasn't her top 10 interview, but her gown and swimsuit.

Finally, some sense has gotten into her head :glee: Anyways, Im still crossing my fingers that jojo acuin's fearless prediction is right pero syempre, tulad nga ng sabi nya, he's there to foresee but its up to prayers and the people themselves to make the destiny into reality :D
I dont feel good about Lourdez Magno because she's so sweet looking... I dont think a sweet looking gal is good enough for the 3 major pageants...(case in point, katherine de guzman, smart gal and sweet and cute but that's what makes her a weak contender in ms world...)

I've watched TJ sa movie nina Regine at Richard at mukhang nagbago ang pananaw ko regarding her. She seems not to look good sa movie. mukhang may kulang at lahat ata ng expect ko from her went down the drain. mukhang di maganda ang teeth niya and she seems to be small. hindi ko lang siya nagustuhan at all sa movie. i'm expecting a different TJ pa naman doon kaso, the opposite had happened to me. masama nga talaga ang mag expect too much.
Regarding the top ten USA tca, mukhang mahirap ata yun. basta i'll post before Feb 28 yung top ten ko for miss usa. kudos sa ating lahat.! :bounce2:

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but in the end... it's still a particular delegate's preliminary performance that has the last say. Just like what Ali Landry used to say... Anything could happen!

Yup... Kahit i-phase out pa ng MUI yung World Tour Interview competition nung MU99 ay pasok pa rin talaga si Miriam sa Final 5... in fact, 2nd overall pa nga ang rank niya kung tutuusin! 2nd siya kay Diana Nogueira sa Oscar de la Renta Swimsuit competition at Evening Gown competition eh. :)
And I also agree that FTV is an excellent source to learn superb catwalk skills. :)

Lara, hindi lang yan... it was also used in MU84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89 and 90 as far as I can remember.
This goes to show one thing... SOME countries, even though they are undeniably culturally-rich, are culturally-BORING. Take Sweden's case.
Hindi lang naman Sweden ang may boring at overused national costume eh... Here are some countries I remember:
NETHERLANDS- super overused na yung milkmaid costume nila... take note: with matching 2 pails pa!
ITALY- overused na yung Leonardo da Vinci-inspired costume nila.
SLOVAK REPUBLIC, POLAND, HUNGARY, BULGARIA, NORWAY, IRELAND, RUSSIA- milkmaid costumes galore!
GREAT BRITAIN- there was a point in time na lagi nilang suot yung Beefeater costume nila.
CANADA- it also has its own version of the Beefeater costume na matagal ding inulit-ulit esp. during the 80s.
THAILAND- ang walang kamatayang classical dancer costume nila-- complete with that golden temple-like headress with long fake golden nails to match.
KOREA, JAPAN- ang immortal nilang mga kimono costumes... paiba-iba lang ng kulay at headress every year pero it's basically the same.
URUGUAY- yung haciendera costume nila complete with the big hat, knee-length boots, dark coat and whip... overused na din.
Compare it naman to other countries (especially those who were former Spanish colonies and territories)...
Here are countries that, in my opinion, never had boring national costumes: Venezuela, India, Puerto Rico, USA, France, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, Spain, Costa Rica, TNT, Aruba, Bolivia, Chile and other Latin American & Caribbean countries...
Di ba? What do you think? :)

MISS UNIVERSE FLASHBACK
Exactly TWO YEARS AGO TODAY...
FEBRUARY 26, 2000, Saturday
Just as we Filipinos astonishedly watched as the dusky 22-year old Candidate #14 Nina Ricci Caldo Alagao win the most coveted Binibining Pilipinas Universe crown, Venezuelans were triumphantly rejoicing over the victory of Osmel favorite and top supermodel Claudia Cristina Moreno Gonzalez in the Miss Republica Bolivariana de Venezuela pageant.

I remember some countries who recycle their national costumes.
Netherlands and France used the same costume design (or same costume talaga?) in MU 2000 in Cyprus and MU 2001 in Puerto Rico.
In India's case naman, I believe they're not recycling their national costumes but they've been using the same design and effect in almost all of their costumes. The ones worn by their delegates in MU are called Choli (Am I right?). Nakakasawa na... If you could also remember Shamita Singha's national costume at Miss Earth... Sobrang identical. I read somewhere that her costume is usually worn by brides in matrimonial rites. Tama ba ako sa observation ko JENSIE?
Can somebody post the National Costumes of Indian Delegates thru the years? para ma-scrutinize talaga natin kung pare-pareho ba?
Thanks!

FEBRUARY 26, 2000, Saturday
Just as we Filipinos astonishedly watched as the dusky 22-year old Candidate #14 Nina Ricci Caldo Alagao win the most coveted Binibining Pilipinas Universe crown, Venezuelans were triumphantly rejoicing over the victory of Osmel favorite and top supermodel Claudia Cristina Moreno Gonzalez in the Miss Republica Bolivariana de Venezuela pageant.
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant70/pageant70_image2.jpg
Both ladies flew to Cyprus months later for the Millennial Miss Universe pageant amid a sea of expectations and a clamour to bring home the most coveted beauty title in the whole universe.
I just wanted to react on this... Isn't it that most Venezuelans were not confident of Claudia? They didn't think of her as strong as Martina Thorogood? And they thought that she'd break the semi-final streak by Venezuela in Miss Universe? But when Claudia set foot in Cyprus and wowed the judges with her amazing body and sincere answers, she proved all of them wrong! Hhmm... Anyways, that was what I've always thought. I could be wrong on this.

BREAKING NEWS
Vanessa Mariño, originally crowned Miss Galicia and set to represent the province of Lugo in the forthcoming Miss España 2002 pageant, has been DISQUALIFIED.
Vanessa in the scandalous picture series that cost her the chances of representing Spain in MU2003

Her "top-less" appearance in a popular local magazine prompted pageant organizers to disqualify her from participating in the national pageant, scheduled for March 15, 2002, Friday. It will select the country's representative to Miss Universe 2003, Miss World 2002, Miss International 2002 and Miss Europe 2002.
The pageant organization is strictly enforcing its move to ban such candidates from entering the local pageant after Miss España 2000 Helen Lindes figured in the very same scandal 2 years ago.

Aside from the fact that it almost cost her the national title, it almost expelled her from the Miss Universe pageant that took place in the Mediterranean island-nation of Cyprus.

Let's all see if she indeed wins the title on March 2, 2002, Saturday
For all we know, she just might break her country's dry spell in Miss Universe. Nicaragua is obviously back on the right track after Ligia's good showing in MW2001.

BREAKING NEWS
Puerto Rican singer Marc Anthony has turned down MUI's invitation to perform during the live telecast of MU2002 scheduled on May 29, 2002, Wednesday, 9PM ET.
http://www.musicofpuertorico.com/pics/marc_anthony_sm.jpg
He rejected the offer since he was already scheduled to make an appearance in Cleveland, Ohio on that very same day.
This leaves MUI with the ultimate options of inviting Spanish balladeer Enrique Iglesias and Colombian pop diva Shakira to perform instead. MUI is in the process of finalizing everything for this year's pageant.
http://www.enriqueiglesias.com/images/h_photo.jpg http://www.shakira.com/english/pictures/images/image11.jpg
As we all know, this will be Enrique's 2nd performance in MU if ever. His first was during MU97 when he performed his hit Only You during the special number that also starred then-reigning Miss Universe Alicia Machado.
On the other hand, this will be Shakira's first performance in the said beauty pageant.

baby_boi, there's this case wherein India "recycled" national costumes.
Those worn by Lara and Shamita were EXACTLY THE SAME... the accessories, color, hue and yes, even their make-up, were all THE SAME. Dito sa pic na ito, hindi suot ni Shamita yung shawl... na exactly the same as Lara's.

Hi baby_boi! :)
I'm not aware with what you're saying that most Venezuelans "were not confident" of Claudia. However, I've read and heard lots of reports that many complained that the Miss R.B. de V. 2000 pageant appeared to be "fixed" since fave nga daw ni Osmel si Claudia... and Osmel had this reputation that he always gets what he wants, no matter what.
Ang alam ko is masaya karamihan ng tao dahil they wanted Claudia to win imbis na iba pa. It's like saying na Claudia was the next best choice na to go to MU2000 and no one else. As we all know, Claudia was a top supermodel saka she was also a semi-finalist and heavy favorite (Miss Distrito Capital) during the Miss Venezuela '99 pageant, where Martina won by a landslide...
Pero of course a lot were saddened that Martina wasn't able to represent Venezuela in MU2000.

THE FIRST EVER WOMAN OF COLOR TO REPRESENT SWEDEN IN MISS UNIVERSE!
19-year old Malou Hansson, representing the province of UPPLAND, has been crowned Froken Sverige 2002 just hours ago. She stands 5 feet 8 inches.
http://www.tv3.se/frokensverige/grafik/uppland2_300.jpg http://www.tv3.se/frokensverige/grafik/uppland1_300.jpg
The 1ST RU was MISS VARMLAND Sophia Hedmark, 19 years old, 5 feet 11 inches. She will go to Miss World 2002 in November.
http://www.globalbeauties.com/gb/newsimages/sweden1st.jpg
The 2ND RU was MISS OLAND Emma Fredriksson, 18 years old, 5 feet 9 inches. She will go to Miss Europe 2002 in December.

(At least 2 of my bets made it to the Top 3!) :)
NOTE:
Unknown to many, Malou is her country's 2ND woman of color to ever participate in an international beauty pageant.
The FIRST was Ida Manneh (also of UPPLAND province), who represented Sweden in Miss World 2000, which was held in London, UK. Ida was first runner-up to Valerie Aflalo, who went to Cyprus for Miss Universe 2000.

A shot of the new Miss Sweden- well it seems ang dami talagang mga "first" black delegates this year. Nung 2000 ata they send their first ever black Miss Sweden in Miss World- she was a beauty. Now we have to wait for Norway...
http://media.expressen.se/picture.asp?id=59846
REgarding the Miss India's national costume- I read before a lot of the Indians are complainning sa ibang mga messageboards that yung type of costume na Lara used and yung kay Shamita for instance (and even kay Celina ata) only come from one region of India. Ang dami naman daw saris and cholis to choose from.
Regarding the recycled national costumes- I like the Thai national costume- I'll ask my Thai friend later what it was called again. And I think the European countries like Sweden aren't "Culturally boring," I guess gusto lang nila talaga gamitin yung national costume na yun- it doesn't mean they're boring. But I know is ang daming costumes from all regions of Scandinavia to choose from. Hindi ata mga milkmaid costumes ang tawag sa mga costumes na nakikita natin sa mga European girls. They use them in wedding,s gatherings, blah blah... hehehe
Sa Norway naman, I like their costumes, I dunno why? kasi you can distinguish the Norwegian costumes because they're the only ones who use dark colors, preferably blue. They call it the Bunad.

The most unique Indian national costumes I ever saw were those of Namrata Shirodkar in MU93 and Manpreet Brar in MU95.
Namrata's costume obviosuly showcased Britain's rich cultural heritage and influence. Manpreet's costume was created by top designer Ritu Kumar. It was black and it gave Manpreet a more mystifying look...

Norway won the National Costume Award in MU93. This was quite a surprise to think the pageant was held in a Latin American country, where there were lots of other spectacular and breath-taking costumes. Eventually, Norway still managed to win! :)
And you're right, Norwegian costumes have this distinct dark blue hue.

ang fun naman ng national costume discussion. very informative, indeed, kaya gustong gusto ko ang thread na ito.
RE MIss USA- actually the girls i found nice in the PICTURES lang are: AK, CT, GA, HI, IA, IO, TX, WA, MS, and MO.
RE National Costumes-Wala talaga tayong magawa kung yan at yan na lang ang costume nila. E kesa land of the Windmills sila eh. Hahahahahaha. Sukang suka na rin ako sa Thai costume with matching mega tulis na kuko. When India won the award ('84), Juhi Chawla only wore one of her prizes as Miss India (given by one of the sponsors, which is a well-known sari brand.) Well, actually, sa sobrang diverse ng India, ang dami nilang costume na pagpipilian. I don't know why they stick to the choli-wedding dress. Baka swerte. Masearch nga.
RE Miss Sweden. Exotica! She looks like Tyra Banks! Ganda!

Jermaine Jackson to Be Celebrity Judge; Joe to Perform at Miss USA 2002; Ali Landry will be co-Host
by Lisa Shidler/Post Tribune Staff
Former Jackson Five member and Gary native Jermaine Jackson will be a celebrity judge for the Miss USA Pageant Friday, and her will participate in the Fortune 500 Expo on Thursday, city officials announced.
Jackson is excited to be coming back home, said his cousin and agent David Fossett. Fossett, who lives in Gary, said he asked Jackson to come back as a favor.
I didn't have to persuade him," Fossett said Sunday. "I told him about the events and he was excited with the build up of the city."
The announcement of Jackson's appearance is the most recent in a trickling of news by city and pageant officials about Friday's live telecast.
Pageant officials also confirmed that Joe, an R&B artist will be one of the three musical acts.
Joe will join country singer Sara Evans on the stage. Joe is nominated for two Grammy awards for his multi platinum album "My Name is Joe."
Miss USA 1996 Ali Landry, 28 will co host the pageant with former football and baseball star Deion Sanders. Landry has been on Sunset Beach" and was named by People magazine as one of the "50 Most Beautiful People."
Jackson joins Dr. Joyce Brother, Survivor's Kim Powers, supermodel Audrey Quock and Nikki Ziering as judges.
Pageant officials are finalizing contracts and planned to make the final announcements today, including the final four celebrity judges.
Jackson's appearance will bring back memories for residents who recall the superstar's family of the 1960s and '70s growing up in Gary.
Fossett said he's not sure when the last time Jackson has been to town was, but it's been several years. Fossett said sometimes members of the Jackson Five return to town unannounced. Recently rumours filled Gary that Michael Jackson had whisked into town.
The Jackson 5 had its first four singles all reach #1 in the early 1970s.
Recently Jermaine appeared with his other siblings and Michael Jackson in September at New York city for a Jackson Reunion. Fossett said Jackson has also been doing projects in Africa, but declined to detail the specifics.

The Miss USA 2002 Presentation Show pics are now up at the official Press Site. Hindi pa kumpleto at saka nagloloko yung mga pictures.
...Pero the good thing is I got to see some of the evening gowns that the delegates wore. The only lady that caught my attention was Miss Mississippi Heather Soriano! She's wearing an elegant, black version of Ali Landry's gown in Miss USA 1996. Naka-bun yung hair niya kaya she strongly reminded me of Lea Salonga in a way.
Marami pa ang wala pa mga pics tulad nina Miss Texas at Miss South Carolina. I read at the American beauty Message Board na standout daw talaga si Miss West Virginia sa gown. We'll see soon! :)

Maybe you meant Texas is the first and only state to have won 5 consecutive times in the entire Miss USA history. Its winning streak was from 1985 to 1989. :)
MORE TRIVIA:
Carole Gist of Michigan was the FIRST EVER black woman to win the Miss USA crown. She won in 1990.
Mai Shanley of New Mexico was reportedly the FIRST EVER bi-racial woman to win the Miss USA crown. She was part Taiwanese. She won in 1984. (Please correct me if deemed necessary) :)
NEW YORK holds the record for being the FIRST EVER state to have won in Miss USA and Miss Teen USA. Jackie Loughery won Miss USA 1952 while Ruth Zakarian won Miss Teen USA 1983.
VIRGINIA holds the record for having the MOST Photogenic Awards. It has won SIX so far.
VERMONT holds the record for having the MOST Congeniality Awards. It has won FOUR so far.
ALASKA holds the record for having the MOST State Costume Awards. It has won FOUR.
FLORIDA is the state with the MOST semi-finalists WITHOUT a Miss USA winner. It made it 20 times.

Regarding the Thai costume, hindi naman every year gamit nila yung may mga matutulis na kuko. I still have to ask my Thai friends kung ano tawag dun, saka sana wag naman tayo ganyan, we should learn to appreciate yung culture ng iba. What if they said sa mga messageboards nila na sukang suka na sila sa Maria Clara natin? Unfair lang kasi sa mga friends ko na ginaganun natin sila.

Based on the evening gown pix and my general impression so far, it seems only Mississippi, Connecticut and Texas have the right to make it to the Top 10. The rest are plain Janes with no schmaltz and spunk at all... I have yet to complete my list. Kaya I have to see the rest. :)
Regarding the 5'11" half-Nigerian girl... like I posted before, Madame Stella is in search of aspirants with oozing sex appeal with supermodel-like features, superb catwalk skills and a flawless "Asian" look and figure... I've been hearing a lot that the important "Asian-looking" requirement has been emphasized for a number of times... The finals screening that took place this year is definitely a deadly one-- so many deserving girls did not make it.

My apologies for the strong words re: Thai costume. Come to think of it, if I remember correctly, Areeya Chumsai didn't wear the Siamese dancer costume with matching mahahabang kuko, right? She wore the long sleeved costume ata. Again, my apologies.

Sorry something went wrong with the facepics.com, texas nalagay ko... hehehe well here are the picture of some of the girls, including Miss Connecticut. If you see Miss Colorado's gown looked like a gown wore by a Miss Venezuelan candidate a few years back. Surprisingly, maganda rin ang gowns ng Alabama and Tennessee.

Miss New York's gown looks like the one Penelope Cruz wore at the Oscars last year. But what happened to her hair?
Miss DC looks like a cross between Angela Bassett and Alfre Woodward.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Ms. Colorado's gown look like Denise's in blue? Or is it because same [very low] neckline lang sila?
Well, Lara, Jensie, Zack, cathybee, baby_boi, etc., pageant analysts in their own right, are we ready to make predictions re: Miss USA? Based lang sa gowns and pics. Katuwaan lang po. Or you can just post your top ten fave gowns (or best "bearers" of the gowns).
BTW, my own humble contribution to this thread's archives:
Its not that Indian girls have become prettier all of a sudden. Its just that they are more professionally prepared for contests nowadays, writes Meher Castelino (Miss India 1964).
What is it that is suddenly making Indian girls the cynosure of international eyes at all beauty contests? Is it their physical beauty? Come on, Indian women have always been known for their good looks and grace. Is it their intelligence? Remember we had a woman Prime Minister long before the western countries did. So what is it that has suddenly catapulted Indian beauty queens to the throne even though we have been sending a beauty representative since the late 50s and have scored occasionally only in the runner-up positions?
The key factor here is - preparation. Beauty contests are a business, which require the correct training to make an impact. Venezeula knew it years ago and has grooming schools for beauty queens. Even in the USA and UK aspiring contestants go through training and then move from contest to contest to get the necessary experience.
When I went for the Miss Universe contest in 1964 to Miami Beach, Florida, I was the first representative sent by Femina to that contest. I had to use my intelligence and financial resources to clothe myself. I went to the local darzi with some glittering fabrics and selected a dress design, which I thought would be just right (how wrong I was!), a few saris, salwar kurtas and jewellery along with 2-3 pairs of shoes and I was ready. I had two small bags all packed and set to make an impression.
When I arrived in Miami Beach I realised I was the most ill equipped contestant. I had to compete with girls who had with them an entourage of persons from dress designer, hairstylist, makeup men, PR agents to advertisers who guided the girl every day as to what she should wear and say. Since there were no question and answer rounds I couldn’t even display my knowledge.
The gown I had taken looked terrible (it would never have won any award). Fortunately for me, my room mate Miss Michigan had five beautiful gowns with her and she lent me one so my evening gown matched the gorgeous ones worn by the other girls. For the national costume I wore a lovely red brocade sari. It was eye catching no doubt but it was nowhere near the dramatic costumes that the girls wear today.
On my return from the contest I informed Femina about what future contestants from our country should do to make an impact. Unfortunately, no one bothered till 30 years later in 1994 when a program was charted out to give the beauty queens the necessary training and backup in the form of wardrobes, makeup, hairstyling, speech, etc. from experts.
So India has two Miss Universe winners -- Sushmita Sen in 1994 and Lara Dutta in 2000. We also have five Miss World Queens -- Aishwariya Rai in 1994, Diane Hayden in 1996, Yukta Mookhey in 1999 and Priyanka Chopra in 2000. The only other big win was Rita Faria -- Miss World in 1965. An Indian -- Diya Mirza -- even managed to clinch the Miss Asia Pacific Crown in 2000.
Today the best designers in the country dress Indian beauty queens. Hemant Trevedi and the Sheetal Design Studio spend months creating the onstage wardrobes of the girls. Ritu Kumar sets her craftsmen into motion to create the most dramatic national costumes that have won for her many awards. Bharat and Doris Godambe teach the beauties make-up and hairstyle tricks, while Sabira Merchant guides them through the correct pronunciation in English. No wonder they all end up sounding like the Queen of England! Experts take care of all the diet, teeth, skin, body and even their mind's problems. So the final product that Femina sends has to be a winner.
2000 has been a super year for India and of course Femina. All three girls selected bagged beauty crowns around the world. It will be a long time before this hat trick can be equalled in the century. But till then let’s enjoy the reputation of being a country that has beautiful and intelligent women. Let’s not be sore winners. That should be left to the rest of the world who has suddenly realised that India is a country to reckon with in the beauty business.

Also, just to add to Jensie's already proficient explanation of the differences of the Spanish dialects, I'm including some more points (as a result of a disagreement with a Mexican and Spaniard boss, yes po, napagalitan ako kasi they spoke the same thing [I thought] but actually, hindi pala, tuloy naparesearch ako). Of course, this is one step in our search of being "true pageant afficionados":
There are several kinds or varieties of Spanish including Castillan Spanish of northern Spain; Latin American Spanish of countries such as Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela and Chile; Carribean or "Tradewinds" Spanish; "Lunfardo" or Argentinian Spanish mixed with Italian; "Chabacano" or Creole Spanish of southern Philippines, "Papiamento" or Creole Spanish of Aruba, Curacao and the Netherland Antilles; "Ladino" or the Spanish of some overseas Jew communities; "Guarani" or creole Spanish of Paraguay; and "Espanglish" or the mixed Spanish-English of the second generation Hispanic immigrants to the United States.
While the Philippines was the most distant country colonized by Spain, and consequently had the smallest number of Spanish settlers, the Spanish language still had a significant influence on the major Filipino languages and dialects. "Chabacano" or the Creole-Spanish of the Zamboanga area in the southern Philippines has been reported to have a Spanish word content of up to 90% while the noted Spanish linguist, Antonio Quilis, asserts that the two major Filipino indigenous languages, Visayas and Tagalog have a 20% Spanish word content.
Excerpt # 1:
Spanish is the most widely spoken of the Romance languages, both in terms of number of speakers and the number of countries in which it is the dominant language. Besides being spoken in Spain, it is the official language of all the South American republics except Brazil and Guyana, of the six republics of Central America, as well as of Mexico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. Additionally it is spoken in the Balearic and Canary islands, in parts of Morocco and the west coast of Africa, and also in Equatorial Guinea. In the United States it is widely spoken in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California (in New Mexico it is co-official with English), in New York City by the large Puerto Rican population, and more recently in southern Florida by people who have arrived from Cuba. A variety of Spanish known as Lad mo is spoken in Turkey and Israel by descendants of Jews who were expelled from Spain in 1492. All told there are about 350 million speakers of Spanish.
The purest form of Spanish is known as Castilian, originally one of the dialects that developed from Latin after the Roman conquest of Hispania in the 3rd century A.D). In the years that followed, Castilian—now Spanish—became the language of a vast empire in the New World.
Spanish vocabulary is basically of Latin origin, though many of the words differ markedly from their counterparts in French and Italian. Many words beginning with f in the other Romance languages begin with h in Spanish (e.g., Ilijo—son, hilo—thread). The Moorish influence is seen in the many words beginning with al- (algodón—cotton, alfombra—rug, ahitohada—pillow, alfiler—pin) . As in British and American English, there are differences in vocabulary on the two sides of the ocean-patata (potato) is papa in Latin America, while melocotón (peach) is durazno. Spanish spelling is based on generally consistent phonetic principles, and reflects better than most languages the way a word is pronounced. The consonants b and v are pronounced alike, the sound falling somewhere between the two sounds in English (boca—mouth, voz—voice). The letter z, and the letter c before e and i, are pronounced as a voiceless th in Castilian, but more like s in southern Spain and Latin America (zapato—shoe, ciudad—city). The letter j, and the letter g before e and i, are pronounced like the English h (jardin—garden, general—general), though in Spain it is more guttural than in Latin America. The hard g sound is represented by g before a, o, and u (gato—cat), but gu before e and i (seguir—to follow). The combination ch is pronounced as in English (muchacho—boy), but is considered a separate letter of the Spanish alphabet, occurring after c. Similarly ll, pronounced as in the English 'million" in Spain but as y in America (calle—street), comes after 1 in the alphabet; ñ , pronounced ny (pequeño—small), comes after n; and rr, a rolled r (correr—to run), comes after r. The h is always silent (hombre man).
The stress in Spanish likewise follows a consistent pattern, falling on the next to last syllable in words ending in a vowel, n, or s, and on the final syllable in words ending in other consonants. Exceptions to this rule are indicated by an acute accent (árbol—tree, corazón—heart).
English words of Spanish origin include cargo, siesta, sombrero, mesa, hacienda, patio, armada, guerrilla, junta, plaza, canyon, rodeo, pueblo, adobe, vaizilia, armadillo, tornado, embargo, and bonanza.
Excerpt # 2:
The Spanish spoken by most second generation speakers in the United States is very different in some ways from the Spanish spoken in the interior of Mexico. Mexicans can recognize a Spanish speaker from the USA no matter how well they speak the language. Most Hispanic-Americans live relatively isolated from the rest of the Spanish-speaking world which has led them to "invent" words. Some use "Anglicisms" such as "parkear el carro" for "park the car". Others use outdated Spanish that they inhereited from their ancestors who may have migrated two or three generations ago. They also use regional dialects that are not familiar in Mexico.
With travel between the US and Mexico becoming more and more frequent and with TV crossing all borders, some of theses aberrations in the Spanish language are even being heard in central Mexico. The following are some examples of these "anglicisms"...needless to say, they are not correct Español, but see if you can figure them out.
"bil" - as in bills, bills, bills by Destiny's Child "Tengo muchos biles para pagar."
"chainear" - as in "Necesito chainear mis zapatos."
"daime" - as in dime "No tengo dinero, ni un daime ."
"hauchar" - as in "Tengo que huachar los hijos de mi hermana."
Those were pretty easy, but we are tired of taipiando for now and anyway it is time to lonchar. If your Spanish only went to escuela alta, then perhaps you need to espeliar better.
Excerpt # 3:
If after years of Spanish classes, some people still find it impossible to understand some native speakers, they should not worry. This does not necessarily mean the lessons were wasted. Millions of Spanish speakers use neither standard Latin American Spanish nor Castilian, which predominate in U.S. schools.
The confusion is partly political—the Spanish-speaking world is very diverse. Spanish is the language of 19 separate countries and Puerto Rico. This means that there is no one standard dialect.
Latin American Spanish
The most common Spanish dialect taught in the U.S. is standard Latin American. It is sometimes called "Highland" Spanish since it is generally spoken in the mountainous areas of Latin America.
While each country retains its own accents and has some unique vocabulary, residents of countries such as Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia generally speak standard Latin American Spanish.
This accent is noted for its pronunciation of each letter and its strong "r" sounds.
This Spanish was spoken in Spain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and was brought to the Americas by the early colonists.
Castilian
However, the Spanish of Madrid and of northern Spain, called Castilian, developed characteristics that never reached the New World. These include the pronunciation of "ci" and "ce" as "th." In Madrid, "gracias" (thank you) becomes "gratheas" (as opposed to "gras-see-as" in Latin America.)
Another difference is the use of the word "vosotros" (you others) as the formal form of "you" in Spain. Latin Americans never use "vosotros," favoring "ustedes" instead.
Castilian sounds to Latin Americans much like British English sounds to U.S. residents.
"Trade Winds" Spanish
The third major type of Spanish is spoken in the Caribbean, coastal areas of Latin America, and in some cases in southern Spain. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the accent in Seville, Cádiz, and other cities in Andalusia, in Southern Spain, began to change. Speakers began to drop the final "s" on words.
The settlers and traders of southern Spain took this dialect with them to the Caribbean and other coastal areas. Today Caribbean or "Lowland" Spanish is characterized by its relative informality, its rapid pace, and the dropping of "s" sounds, allowing people to talk more quickly.
Italians Influence Argentina
A fourth type of Spanish has developed in and around Buenos Aires and in parts of Uruguay. It is characterized by some out-of-date grammar, and a vocabulary and pronunciation heavily influenced by Italians who settled the area in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Generally in the Spanish world "tú" is the singular way of saying "you." In Buenos Aires, however, "vos" is used instead. It is accompanied by a modified old Spanish verb form. It is as if part of the English-speaking world still used "thee" and "thou" in everyday speech.
In addition, the residents of this region have a tendency to "sing" (para sigurong mga Ilonggo) their sentences like Italians and to pronounce certain words differently from other Spanish-speakers. For instance, they pronounce the "ll" as an English "j," while most other Spanish speakers pronounce "ll" as an English "y." (But don't Puerto Ricans also do this? )
The Buenos Aires accent is instantly recognizable throughout the Spanish world. Gaucho poetry and twentieth-century Buenos Aires novelists have preserved this speech as a literary style.
The influence of Italian has even led to the development of a separate language, Lunfardo, which blends Spanish and Italian. Argentine intellectuals have produced Lunfardo dictionaries and books in an effort to keep the language alive.

My oh my... what happened to Kasi?!? Just look at those thunder-thighs!!! :( Very, very reminiscent of Zoribel's 2 years ago in Cyprus... Expect Kasi's swimsuit score to be low. Fortunately, she made up for the loss by wearing that killer gown. She's still going to make it to the Top 10, believe me.
Lara, sinong "Miss Venezuela contestant" ang sinasabi mong nagsuot ng gown na kapareho ng gown ni Miss Colorado? Do you remember na? :)
Take a closer look at Miss Tennessee's gown... it's exactly Lynnette Cole's gown in MU2000 except that it's gold... Both gowns were obviously created by the same designer...

For those who have the time tonight, I encourage you to do the same. Masaya, believe me. :) I've been doing this method to select the Top 10 for Miss Universe, Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, Miss World and Bb. Pilipinas since 1995. Ang saya talaga. Nakakapagod nga lang. :)
Saka I just wanted to share... my MOST SUCCESSFUL Top 10 prediction was that of MU99. I got 9 out of 10. Ang mali ko lang is I did not predict Jamaica would make it. :)

I also appreciate Aileen Damiles's national costume. It had a unique concept indeed! FYI lang, Pitoy Moreno designed it.
Do you remember Joanne Santos's national costume in MU95? It's THE BEST Philippine national costume I've ever seen in Miss Universe so far! Joanne stands 5'10", but it made her look taller... Napaka-engrande talaga! Kaya no wonder nilagay siya sa harap ng stage nung Opening Number. Gitnang-gitna pa!
Nope, Areeya did not wear a long-sleeved national costume. In fact, she wore a sleeveless costume that had a very striking similarity to the uniforms of the First Class cabin crew of Thai Airways International Ltd. It's very classy. :)
Baka you were talking about her preliminary evening gown... Areeya wore a golden off-shoulder long-sleeved gown with a slit to match...

jensie, after seeing all of the Miss USA gowns, well ang dami sa kanila this year ang gaganda talaga. Unlike the previous years na napaka-Kano ng dating, kinda dull and plain unlike you see sa mga Miss Universe gowns. But this year... woah!!!! It's like they're getting their ideas sa mga Miss Universe gowns, or shopuld I say, they're getting their ideas internationally. May pagka foreign na ang dating. I also like Miss Georgia and Miss Georgia's gown.

1. Ruffa's spectacular and colorful costume in Miss World 1993 was inspired by the mythical Sarimanok. It was designed by Ben Farrales.
2. Charlene's stunning costume in Miss Universe 1994 was also inspired by the Sarimanok. However, it had a totally different concept. It was designed by Pitoy Moreno.
3. Aileen's unique costume was inspired by the Igorot tribe of Northern Luzon. It was also designed by Pitoy Moreno.
4. Abbygale's costume was inspired by National Artist Fernando Amorsolo's famous Planting Rice masterpiece that was reported to be worth millions. Pitoy Moreno designed it.
5. Miriam's costume was inspired by the Santacruzan festival that takes place during the month of May. It was designed by top Colombiam couturier Alfredo Barraza.
I would really appreciate it if someone could post the costumes of Jewel Lobaton (yellow ati-atihan costume), Joanne Santos (maroon-red Manobo wedding dress) and Dindi Gallardo (similar to Miriam but had lots of pearls and capiz shells in it).

BREAKING NEWS
Last week, the official candidates for the upcoming Miss Jamaica Universe 2002 pageant were announced. Only 13 lucky ladies were selected from the thousands of aspirants to make up this year's roster.
The local pageant organization has commissioned Mrs. Dawn Johnson (Eva Ekvall's mom, who happens to be a resident of the Caribbean island-nation) to coordinate and assist in the selection of this year's queen. Eva, herself, has volunteered to help her mom with the process. According to Eva, this is an opportunity to share and use her many experiences as former Miss Venezuela.
Here are the Lucky 13 for the million-dollar pageant that takes place on the 30th of March, Black Saturday at the Hilton New Kingston Hotel.

2. Charlene's Farrales[/b].stunning costume in Miss Universe 1994 was also inspired by the Sarimanok. However, it had a totally different concept. It was designed by Pitoy Moreno.
Ahem! Mukhang nagkamali ka ata this time Jensie. Yes it was designed by leading Filipino couturier Jose "Pitoy" Moreno, but the winning costume draws its inspiration from the ceremonial garb of the Manobo and T'boli, two of the Philippines' most colorful indigenous tribes.Described as "electric ethnic," it is made up of a midriff top and full skirt done in handwoven fabric. The ensemble is then pulled together by an elaborate feather headdress and an intricate brass-chased belt decorated with tiny bells. ;)

here's what i got from mabuhay pageant for this year's bb pilipinas:
The Bb. Pilipinas Pageant kicked off officially this week. With the selection of the 25 official Bb.Pilipinas 2002 Candidates comes along with it a plethora of personal appearances that will include TV guestings, promotional appearances, social functions and sponsor courtesy visits.
Last Monday the girls had a brief briefing in the Cubao offices of BPCI. The sessions provided the girls information about this year's pageant. Also the customary measuring of the girl's vital stas were done as well as meetings with couturiers.
On Tuesday night after meeting up at the Araneta Complex, a select group of Bb. Pilipinas 2002 candidates that included Katherine Manalo among others were invited to watch the opening night of Neil Goldberg's Cirque show at the Araneta Coliseum. The world acclaimed circus entertainment group is in Manila for a series of performances that started yesterday (February 26) to end on March 10. The Cirque's opening night was well attended by former Bb. Pilipinas queens. Among those spotted by my sources were Miss Universe 1999 1st runner up Miriam Quiambao, Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2001, Nina Ricci Alagao, Bb. World 2001, Katherine anwen de Guzman. Quiambao would gamely join Bb. 2002 Katherine Manalo in an audience participation portion of the show to the delight of the capacity crowd.
Today, Wednesday there will be further briefings at Araneta Center. The girls are scheduled to appear in the next two weeks at various Araneta Center locations like Ali Mall, Farmers' Plaza to promote the pageant.
Other News :
GMA TV executives headed by Wilma Galvante , VP for TV Production and Marivin Arayata, GMA Producer in Charge for Bb. Pilipinas 2002 and BPCI executives led by Bobby Roca, Project Coordinator signed the contract designating GMA as the Official TV Network for this year's Bb. Pilipinas. The network get exclusive right to broadcast this year's Coronation Night on March 16, 2002.
More news if my good friends at Mabuhay will allow me coming soon. Thanks so much

UNCONFIRMED REPORT
SOURCE: http://www.geocities.com/presentedus/news2002.html
The Organizacion Miss Chile Universo could no longer afford the franchise to Miss Universe. The last time it sent a representative to MU was in 2000. Fortunately Daniella Campos, a famous Chilean model and former Miss Mundo Chile '98, bought the Chilean franchise for Miss Universe last year. Her pageant is called Miss Verano Chile (Miss Summer Chile).
Unfortunately, it was reported that she had no time and money to hold the 2002 edition of the national pageant, herself, but promised to hold one next year. As a consequence of this unforeseen circumstance, she has decided to send Christianne Balmelli, Chile's entrant to MW2001.

Christianne Balmelli Fournier
AGE: 22
HEIGHT: 5 feet 10 inches
*If ever this pushes through, this is definitely good news for Chile. The last time it made it to MU was in 1990, with Urania Haltenhoss as its representative. :)
Christiane could have been a strong contender for the MW2001 crown. She topped most of the predicition lists of many pageant web sites. Unfortunately, for mysterious reasons, she did not make the semi-final cut.

The Miss Ecuador 2002 pageant will be launched soon. At this very moment, potential aspirants are being summoned and encouraged to sign up for the national pageant. The pageant is set for the last week of March.
SOURCE: http://www.super949.satnet.net/ame.htm
*The last time this South American nation made it to MU was in 1981, when it was represented by Lucia Isabel Vinueza Urgueyez.
*Ecuador has won a special award in MU only once, and this was way back in 1992. It's representative, Maria Soledad Diab, won the Photogenic Award that year.

Well, I'm watching the film clips ng evening gown saka ng swimsuit competition sa Miss USA site, and lo and behold, they're still playing "Same" by smith and Mighty sa evening gown competition, it seems di pa rin sila sawa dun. hehehe nice Well, so far nasa "I" pa lang ako eh. PEro heck, baka di na matapos so here's my top 10 na.
Alabama
Illinois
Connecticut
Tennessee
Texas
Indiana
Mississippi
Washington (but I doubt it)
Kansas
Nebraska
though this is subject to change as long as I haven't seen all the video clips. Regarding the over used white gowns posted by Jensie, I rather like Miss Alabama's white gown. Saka I've noticed na iba mag runway walk ang mga American girls, notice sa video clips, they don't walk like the supermodelish type we see in Miss Universe (iba ang trainning sa kanila)- special mention from 2001- Misses Venezuela, Netherlands, Greece, Israel (yes she had a sexy way in projecting her black gown), Spain , Switzerland, Nigeria, Panama etc. These girls have a sexy way of walking, the American girls are kinda stiff. Oh well, back to the video clips.

Actually I'm not much of a pro in I'm making a top 10 list for Miss USA. But for Miss Universe, well.... that's another story. Can't make my top 5 or my top 3 (if ever meron), I want to be surprised. I think they faced out the style award since Clairol is no longer a sponsor this year.
Ok, I'll replace Miss Washington with Miss Wisconsin

Wow Lara! Parehong-pareho tayo ng Top 10 bets! Ang wala lang sa listahan ko ay si Miss Alabama Tara Tucker! Hindi na ako nanood ng mga video clips nila dahil masisiraan na ako ng ulo. Basta I scored them on their bios, swimsuits & gowns. :)
Let's hope for the best na all our predictions make it. Saka tama ka, Miss USA contestants don't have the catwalk skills at all... unlike some European representatives in Miss Universe...
Are they playing the remixed version of Same, or is it only the album version...? Mas pamatay kung remixed version by Ashley Beedles yung ginamit... yun mismo yung ginamit sa Bayamon last year during the finals night. Pang-runway show talaga.

Hi Musique! :)
I have to agree-- Miss Kansas is one hot babe indeed... Nag-shine siya talaga nung prelims. Shortly after she was crowned Miss Kansas USA 2002, I really didn't notice her... but here she is now... with the strong chance of winning Kansas' 2nd ever Miss USA crown after Kelli McCarty in 1991... :)

Hi guys! I've been hearing lots of unconfirmed and unofficial rumors that Miss USA 2002 will have 12 semi-finalists (yes, 12) and not 10. May nag-triple-tie daw for the 10th place eh.
Oh well, I'm not surprised... the last time Miss USA had 12 semi-finalists was in 1995. Saka I also wanna share na during Miss USA 1987, there were 11 semi-finalists... weird noh?
Miss Universe lang ang strict na kailangan Top 10 lang talaga sa semi-finals (walang labis, walang kulang) ever since it implemented the Top 10 format in 1984.
I want to share na during MU92, Miss Sweden Monica Brodd and Miss Iceland Svava Haraldsd were both tied for the 10th spot. MUI sticked to its policy that only the Top 10 delegates can and will be selected to compete during the finals night. Consequently, MUI chose Miss Sweden to enter the Top 10 because she had a higher preliminary interview score than Miss Iceland. Unfair noh?
Another similar situation happened during Miss Teen USA 2001. Miss California Casey McClain and Miss Massachusetts Marianna Zaslavsky were tied for the 5th spot after the semi-final round...
Since MUI redefined its image in 1998, only the Top 5 are selected after the semi-final round, and no longer the Top 6. Consequently, MUI chose Miss Massachusetts to enter the Top 5 because her preliminary interview score was higher than that of Miss California.
At this point in time, it's already safe to conclude that the preliminary interview is very, very important and must never be underestimated... It has more weight compared to the swimsuit and evening gown competitions.
Anyway, I'm adding 2 more ladies para sure... Here's my FINAL Top 12 for Miss USA 2002 (just in case):
MISSISSIPPI Heather Michelle Soriano, 24, 5'3"
CONNECTICUT Alita Haawah Dawson, 22, 5'8"
TEXAS Kasi Laine Kelly, 20, 5'9
TENNESSEE Allison Leigh Alderson, 25, 5'9"
WISCONSIN Cortney Kathleen Owen, 22, 5'6"
INDIANA Kelly Lloyd, 25, 5'6"
NEBRASKA Stacey Skidmore, 21, 5'10"
KANSAS Lindsay Douglas, 23, 6'0"
WASHINGTON Carly Kay Shorten, 19, 5'10"
ILLINOIS Amanda Sue Reynolds, 23, 5'8"
VERMONT Brooke Elizabeth Angus, 20, 5'9"
PENNSYLVANIA Nicole Dawn Bigham, 25, 5'8"
Pero siyempre I'm hoping na sana Top 10 pa din... :)
Which of the following final night formats do you prefer?
15-5, 12-6-3, 12-5-3, 10-6-3, 10-5-3 or 10-5?

Hi RollinRolly! :)
Yup, I agree! Hazel could have been better off in MU2002... oh well, there's no use crying over spilled milk. I don't think one's own race has any effect on her chances of making it in Miss World-- for a fact we all know it's a very, VERY unpredictable pageant. It's really up to Julia Morley and her fellow judges. Let's just expect the worse and hope for the best. :)
Regarding Slovak Republic, I think it should prioritize Miss Universe over Miss World since it already made it to MU-- remember Silvia Lakatosova in '94? It has never made it to Miss World.

excerpt from post-tribune
The dress is formal, all black-tie and sequins. It's definitely not the night for jeans.
The show will have a patriotic spin with the contestants decked out in red, white and blue outfits.
McMillan describes the show as Americana rock 'n' roll.
Co-host Deion Sanders will hope to charm the crowd and TV audience, with crooner Michael Bolton (another performer)providing the entertainment.
Nine minutes into the show, the audience and the world will know which contestants made the judge's cut for Top 12 another confirmation of lara's report ;) .
In the end, Krueger will make her final walk down the stage and wave her little wave.
Then, a new reign begins.
Who are the celebrity judges? this is the complete list...
Supermodel Audrey Quock, Jackson Five member Jermaine Jackson, pop music siren Willa Ford, New England Patriots player and Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady, health and wellness expert Joyce Brothers, CBS' "Survivor Africa" participant Kim Powers, "King of Queens" co-star Victor Williams, and actress and model Nikki Ziering.

What happened to Tennessee, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Washington, Mississippi, Hawaii and the other favorites?!?!

Scandals temporarily mar pageant memories for some participants
By Bob Kostanczuk / Post-Tribune staff writer
The whiff of scandal wafts from the storied annals of beauty pageants.
In some ways, it has fueled interest in them.
With the Miss USA Pageant set for Friday in Gary, here's a look at some scandalous fare that rattled tiaras.
Vanessa Williams' relinquishment of her Miss America crown in 1984 is the King Kong of
pageant scandals.
Williams made history in September 1983 by becoming the first black Miss America.
But before the singer from New York state could complete her one-year reign, nude photographs of her - taken prior to the pageant - were published in Penthouse magazine.
Worse yet for Williams, the pictures showed her in sensual poses with another nude woman.
The first black titleholder in the pageant's 62-year history was forced to resign in July 1984 - two months before her term was up.
Williams eventually fashioned a stellar singing career.
You live here?
Michigan-born Alecia Rae won the Miss Michigan title in Miss America-sponsored competition.
She then moved to Bremen, Ind., in May 1986 with dreams of becoming Miss Indiana in the Miss USA contest.
Rae had lived in Indiana for seven months prior to the Miss Indiana USA pageant in Merrillville.
As fate would have it, the woman with the Michigan driver's license won.
Some cried foul.
A Hammond woman who finished third to Rae didn't hide her displeasure: "It's not really fair to the girls who have lived here all their lives.''
Rae brushed off critics: "There are jealousies in all pageants.''
Anonymous complaints to pageant officials led to a probe of Rae's eligibility.
The pageant's headquarters ruled that Rae met residency requirements - by one month.
Jamie Swenson, a pageant-contestant consultant, said state jumping is a tool of the ambitious.
"That's very common,'' said Swenson. "Some states are easier to win than other states.''
Family ties
Katherine Shindle, Miss Illinois, was named Miss America in 1997.
But it soon came to light that daddy served on the pageant's board of directors.
Gordon Shindle took a leave of absence from the board a few months before his daughter was crowned.
But he was still on the board when she won a Miss America preliminary in Illinois.
The Miss America Organization assured, however, that the judging system wasn't corrupted.
Kate Shindle kept her crown.
A royal pain
A Miss USA title should lead to some nice gigs.
But 1992 titleholder Shannon Marketic supposedly endured an unwelcomed stint as a plaything for the opulent Sultan of Brunei.
In one of the strangest post-crowning sagas, Marketic said she was "forcibly detained'' and forced to party on palace grounds during a nightmare trip arranged through a talent agency.
Marketic, who claims she traveled to Brunei under false pretenses, also alleged that she and other young women who made the trip were lewdly treated. In her lawsuit against the sultan and talent agency, Marketic said a party guest once told her, "What do you think you are here for? You might have been Miss USA, but you're a ***** now.''
The sultan denied the charges.
A federal judge ruled in 1997 that the sultan could not be sued because he's entitled to immunity as a head of state.
Marketic's attorney said this month that the case had been "discontinued,'' refusing to further discuss it.
In her lawsuit, Marketic had said that after 32 days of detention in Brunei, she was given her passport and told she had 20 minutes to pack.
"She's lucky she escaped with her life,'' said beauty pageant writer Dawn Perlmutter.
The real thing?
Miss Brazil Juliana Borges stirred controversy at last year's Miss Universe Pageant when it was reported she had undergone cosmetic surgery - as many as 19 surgeries, in fact.
For the record, she maintained she "only had four surgeries.''
Miss Universe operates under the same corporate auspices as the Miss USA Pageant.
Are "enhancements'' an option for the Miss USA delegates in Gary?
"We have absolutely no rules about plastic surgery,'' said pageant spokeswoman Mary Hilliard McMillan. "It's not something that we encourage, but we don't have any rules banning it.
"We want the girls to look and feel their best, whatever it takes for them to feel confident and to feel good about themselves
...i think this is good read :D

Today na nga! The Top 12 have been announced an hour ago. At this very moment, the pageant is on going. In fact, patapos na.
jensie_g im a a tad confused...sino *** rep sa ms nicaragua--hazel o cinthia ba un?!?!
Last Wed, Hazel was crowned Miss Nicaragua Mundo 2002. The Miss Nicaragua Universo 2002 pageant is scheduled to take place tonight. Cinthia is my bet to win this pageant since Hazel won na. Hazel was original bet for MNU a long, long time ago.
btw, i think i like the format of top 10 (wag na top 15 parang sobrang dami ng iaanalyze mo nun eh! nakakadrain) tapos top 5 tapos top 3....panget naman kung *** top 5 e mananalo lahat kase parang whats the point of competing e panalo na rin naman kayo kahit anong gawin mo...kumbaga, may titulo na rin naman kayo kahit anong mangyari...corny nun di ba...so im for 10-5-3 same as you, jensie
Good choice! :)

Interesting thread. I just wanna share that Marilyn Villata, Miss Costa Rica 2002, is a friend of mine. We (her friends) might go to Puerto Rico to root for her.
PURA VIDA COSTA RICA! :)

We have common friends. She was just introduced to me last year. She's a gorgeous darling. I just actually called her and she is watching Miss USA right now on CBS. I think the Top 5 is about to be announced. :)

Jensie, where did you get the info about Miss USA? Well regarding the surprises this evening, I expected Washington not to make it because her gown was plain and her swimsuit were really awful. I'm really disappointed about Tennesse not making it. Mississippi and Hawaii are too short kasi eh. Well Texas hanggang top 10 lang, well figures, geesh look at her killer thighs!!!!!!
My choices for Miss USA Connecticut or Kansas
