Hi mulan_rushdiary! :)

I will find my Gloria Diaz pictures ASAP. I'm so sorry I could not post them here at the moment.

Lara: You're right! It's too early to tell. Marami pang ngang countries ang wala pang representatives for MU2002...

We have yet to see the delegates from Greece, Curacao, Bonaire, Brazil, Estonia, Netherlands, Uruguay, New Zealand, Israel, Thailand, the PHILIPPINES and many, many more! :)

Haay, don't worry Lara... may awa ang Diyos sa atin... It won't be long until someone breaks the dry spell again. And when it does happen, I think this time around we will win... Konting panahon lang yan. :)

Panahon lang talaga ng Puerto Rico last year, at lalung lalo na ng India nung year 2000. Kanya-kanyang panahon lang yan. May panahon din tayo, believe me. :)

Yup! Naaawa ako talaga kay Nina Ricci...I think she's the most hyped representative ever to any international pageant... Hindi talaga siya makakakilos nang walang criticisms here and there back in Cyprus.

Practically almost all boards, polls, websites predicted she would make it to the top 10 or top 5... or would even win. Pero when the top 10 were announced and she wasn't on the list... heart-wrenching talaga. Nina Ricci even revealed that she locked herself on her own cubicle to cry out all her frustrations, pressures, and disappointments. Nanghina daw talaga siya...

The same thing went for Zoribel Fonalledas and Letty Murray-- two of the other over-hyped candidates in MU2000.

yeah and we can only blame the Colombian "has been" for ruining our chances with Nina. I know Mexico and Puerto Rico cried daw talaga, but Nina was a little bit composed, right? Ang laki talaga ng galit ko dyan kay Colombian has been na yun, hehehe and a whole lot more Filipinos share my sentiments. hehehe

Telisha Jean or TJ finally signed up for Bb. Pilipinas 2002. She is now in the thick of preparations for the contest. David's Salon for whom she has done poster ads is now doing her hair and make-up trials at the David's Salon outlet in Libis. She has also started her daily two-hour work-outs at the gym and has hired a trainor for two-hour kickboxing sessions in the evening. We have already done test shots and she will soon start her gown-fittings. - GERRY DIAZ

It's too early to tell but bet ko na siya for one of the BB. Pilipinas Crowns. Make way for the Queen. :D

Lara: Umaasa kasi talaga si Letty Murray na she'll make it to the top 10... she has all the right to to do so... she won the Clairol Herbal Essences Classic Style Award and the National Costume Award.

I believe she aced her preliminary interview, but stumbled greatly on her swimsuit and poor choice of evening gown-- it wasn't really impressive nor stunning in my opinion.

Wala siyang VA VA VOOM (as you would say it) compared to Silvia Salgado, at least.

Here's a proof that Michelle Shulte is dead serious with her "thing" for beauty pageants:

She's competing TONIGHT for the title of Binibining Parañaque 2002. She's representing Barangay BF Homes.

The winner of the said pageant will receive P 100T... very, very close to the grand prize awarded to the 3 major titleholders of Bb. Pilipinas. ( P 150T each)

Yup, she's from BF Parañaque. She's a fourth year high school student at the Marymount School.

I have a friend na ka-batch ni Michelle ngayon sa Marymount. I'll ask him about her pageant plans. :)

Zorah also lives in Parañaque right now. As we all know, her real home is far, far away in Baguio. She lives in her relatives' house.

Katherine Anne Manalo, the Sara Lee model who joined BB2001 but was excluded from the official list, is also from Parañaque, specifically Tahanan Village.

Bb. Pilipinas 1st runner-up 1996 Sovietskaya Bacud is also from Parañaque.

Maraming magaganda sa Parañaque. :)

Presenting here one of South Africa's bi-racial beauty queens: Vanessa Carreira. She's half Potuguese.

Sure she has the looks... but I don't know if she'll make it. Until now, I don't see any spark at all. I don't think she's a contender. I'll wait for her prelim swimsuit and gown pics before I'll make my final verdict on her. :)

From Mabuhay MB

Take this. She's a member of the Philippine Triathlete National Team, and just recently placed 2nd in a national competition held in Ilo-ilo. Now 22 years of age, she's a luscious 34-23-35 on a 5' 7" frame. A competitive girl that she is, she won the top prize in a modelling search for upcoming commercial and ramp models held last week in Quezon City. She's taking up a most complexed, almost perplexingly bizarre course which is Metallurgical Engineering in UP Diliman. Her name is even more intriguing, like a riddle borne of the klieglights - yes, she's the one and only Lakambini "Bing" Alto. Still unable to catch your breath

Oh ma Gawwd!!! She's vying for the title? she should have joined a more prestigious one. Sure win na siya sa Bb. Parañaque. Oh well, baka it's just a stepping stone for her. We should give her a break. Gudluck to her.

Ok, one by one muna, i'll comment muna on the girl...

MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHE'S MY BET FOR SAN JUAN!!!!!!!!!!!! BAGAY NGA SIYA SA MISS UNVIERSE KASI YUNG FEATURES NIYA MEDYO PAGKA ETHNIC!!!!!! I just hope she answers well, and magnonovena na ko para siya ang Miss Universe bet natin. hehehe Napaka stressful lang talaga when we're picking our bet for Miss Universe kasi panira talaga ang mga tao sa Bb.- they tend to disappoint us. But SHE is my bet na talaga!!!! At first I wanted Telisha Jean- ok din siya pero parang pang Miss World siya eh. Either of these two are my bets. But I hope this morena girl would win.

Zack, you're from BF as well? San? Just PM me nalang your answer or something if ya want.

And regarding kay Michelle Shulte, ok lang if she's competing for Bb. Parañaque (and to think she's representing my subdivision), because she ain't planning to join Bb pa naman this year eh. If she wins then that cash prize would help her prepare for Bb. Pilipinas.

JENSIE_G

Zack: Bing is a real contender. I think even TJ won't be able to beat her for the top plum. There are numerous reports that this year's Bb. Pilipinas Universe will train in Mumbai with the Femina team and Neha Dhupia. Given proper training and exceptional grooming, I believe Bing might just be our 3rd Miss Universe. :)

It seems U.P. is replacing U.S.T. as the beauty queen capital of the Philippines. After Nina Ricci and Zorah... here comes Bing-- a strong possibility for MU2002.

And you're right-- Bing IS a rich blend of Imee and Miriam. TJ, naman, strongly resembles Nina Ricci. :)

Lara: Stay tuned for the Feb. 23 final screening! There are more to come. I couldn't agree with you more! :) As of now, TJ and Bing are also my top 2 choices.

Lara: Im not from BF but I'm just near your subdivision. :D feeling ko lang di na kelangan ni Michelle ng 100T for preparation for the BB kasi she seems to be coming from a very well-off family.

Regarding Bing, possible siya sa BB Universe crown while TJ is for BB World. Kulang na lang ng isa at kumpleto na ang listahan ko. Lets hope for the best for these girls. Sabayan natin sa pagnovena si Lara. :D

Jensie: In my opinion, UP and UST are the Beauty Queen Capitals of the Philippines. These two schools, though they really excel in their own fields, also have many former beauty queens as well as present beauty queens be it a Binibini or a Mutya or from whatsoever pageants. Unlike some girls from DLSU or ADMU, they seem not to pay too much attention from pageants such as BB. What I like about the candidates or an MU, MW or MI bets from UP and UST, "aside from they get a more well-rounded educational experience, they also know how to deal and meet people from all walks of life." from Charlene Gonzalez

Are you talking about the worst performance of a Bb. Pilipinas in Miss Universe?

I believe the worst performance in Miss Universe of a Bb. Pilipinas (at least of recent times) was that of Violeta Naluz in '86. She ranked 36th place overall from 76 contestants.

what about, I'm back, after a long absence from this beloved thread (hehehehe).

But well, di naman totoo yun di ba? kulang nga talaga siya sa oomph....as the thread lingo goes, vavavoom.

Maganda yang torso nyang si Bing Alto. Sasali ba yan?

Medyo maganda rin ang Escape na kanta ni Enrique pang-swimsuit. Ang halay ng video!

It's too early to tell pero I'm eyeing na for Lakamibini and TJ. oh well, let's just wait and see when the appropriate time comes. Basta if ever they will be accepted as one of the candidates, they are my bets.

Yup you're right, Joyce Giraud was Miss Puerto Rico 1998.

I beg to disagree. :) Brunette ang mananalo this year and she's none other than Miss Texas Kasi Kelly. :)

Miss India Madhu Sapre was clearly the only Asian candidate that received the judges' nod. Even that year's hometown queen, Ornanong Panyawong, did not place so well.

Is this Osmel?

http://www.missuniverse.com/missuniverse/year-picts/venezuela2.jpg

I just want to comment on some of the people posting sa Mabuhay. Natatawa lang ako kasi as early as now ang dami nang mga hype. It all started when they showed the Fil-Am girl who looked like Aileen Damiles and Ruffa G- everyone was saying siya dapat pumunta ng SAn Juan, then si TJ naman, now si Lakambini. parang pabago bago talaga ng gusto. Saka from the looks of it, as the deadline grows near in announcing the official delegates lalong paganda ng paganda ang nilalabas nila. Haaay, we're indeed very immature pa when it comes to these things, nakakita lang ng maganda nag aamok na yung iba. Hyping mode activated. hehehe Well, Lakambini is still my bet, but as always too early pa talaga. Like last year everyone went agog over Michelle Reyes, remember? Sabi nila pang Miss U. Tapos nung nagsalita, AMP U C H A na.... hehehe no comment nalang ako. hehehe

Yup. Osmel is the man to Denise's right.

Kaya ako, I visit that message board once in a while for purposes of viewing or getting pictures. That's it! Hindi ako nagtatagal kasi I can't stand the aura of the discussions going on there... sobrang babaw, cheap, untrue, unconfirmed, unofficial and worst, very immature nga.

Diyan nga nadale sina Zorah at lalo na si Nina at iba pang mga candidates ng ibang countries. Nakakaawa yung mga naging contenders for the MU, MW MI or other pageants crowns.

In fairness to Mabuhay MB, as far as i know, they have a team which is composed of 3 - 5 individuals. Each member has his or her own candidates that he or she grooms for the BB Pilipinas 2002 kaya madami silang featured na possible na maging candidates for BB pilipinas. It's very true nga na it's too early to tell pero guys, let's just be more optimistic. Just hope for the best. hyping happens to almost all message boards including this one . . . the one that would differentiate it is of course the credibility . . .as per mabuhay pageants , the one "hyping" about the candidates are the people posting there . . . the moderators are just there to give them a glimpse of who they think are potential binibinis . . . too bad for our girls who have experienced that ( zora, nina specifically) because they could have been really great during their competition . . . nina suffered so much i guess since so much expectation was put on her shoulders coz of her predecessor. to zora, i guess the hype thing came in because they say she resembles mirriam, having trained in venezuela and all . . .

and now, we have lakambini, telisha who we say are deadringers for miriam/nina respectively . . . i am likewise optimistic (thanks to zack) that we would have a better year (or candidates).

An interseting article about Neha and the other 2 winners in Femina Magazine:

Catch A Rising Star
By Purabi Shridhar

A few minutes with her and you know what they’re talking about when they say the winner takes it all! Twenty-one-year-old Neha Dhupia, Femina Miss India—Universe 2002 has what it takes; confidence, beauty and brains neatly packaged in a genial, friendly personality. She exudes a warmth that is all-enveloping and an infectious feel-good aura.

A history honours graduate from Jesus and Mary College, New Delhi, with two years of professional modelling behind her, the title for Neha is a “dream come true. Few people actually get to live their dream. There is no other title like this; it takes you to an incomparable level of glory and gives you a high like no other.”

Getting Down To It
Neha laughingly calls herself a ‘civilised nomad’ because of her naval background. “I had to stay really focussed and had put everything else aside while preparing for the Contest. I’ve been modelling for two years, and it’s made all the difference; you’re more aware of yourself and command a certain presence on stage,” she says. But it was no easy battle, she admits, with the competition stiff, and each girl so good, that everyone had just a 1/26th chance of winning.

But then again, Neha has always had that bit of ‘je ne sais quoi’ to set her apart from the rest. Apart from the coveted Femina Miss India—Universe title, Neha breezed through the sub-contests, bagging the Margo Miss Beautiful Skin and MTV’s Most Wanted titles.

Marking Time
Neha has always been interested in theatre and has starred in the lead role in an Indo-Japanese feature film, and was doing a play for Roshan Abbas and Shiamak Davar, when a photographer offered to shoot her pictures, marking her entry into the world of modelling. With a number of leading campaigns under her belt, Neha knew it was the right time to aim for the crown. “I wanted to take part in the Femina Miss India Contest last year, but couldn’t. I was determined to make it this year. It was a good decision,” she smiles.

Determination met dedication, and the result was magic; “I gave it my all. I started working out, toning and sculpting my body, and concentrating on my diet and exercise routine. Being aware of my surroundings was not a problem, because I am not a bad blend of beauty and brains,” she says, with a confidence that comes naturally to her.

“The 45-day-long training prior to D-Day also helped tremendously, particularly the fitness training, Sabira Merchant’s speech and diction classes and the Art of Living course.” Neha concedes that if she has been able to achieve so much at so young an age, credit goes to her parents. “They’ve been extremely supportive in whatever I’ve wanted to do. Every time I’ve had an early morning shoot, my mother has always woken up first. It might not seem like much, but is so important to me. I’m glad I’ve done them proud now,” she says.

Even as Neha savours her victory that is ‘yet to sink in fully’, she is very sure of what is on her agenda next. No, it is not Bollywood yet, because, “right now my commitment and my dedication is towards the Miss Universe title. There can be no other distractions. Whether I make it or not is another matter, but I’m going to give it my best shot.”

It's official and confirmed:

Michelle Shulte won Binibining Parañaque 2002 last night.

I saw her on TV being congratulated by Mayor Joey Marquez.

This is a big stepping stone for this 17-year old. She is a graduating student of Marymount School and resident of BF Homes.

She won in the Bodyshots Competition last year together with SMB model Lauren Novero.

Miss Photogenic Memories in Miss USA

Here are the Miss USA Photgenic Award recipients from 1999 to 2001.

Miss Wisconsin USA '99 Elyzabeth Pham,
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant49/pageant49_image3.jpg
Miss Minnesota USA '00 Paige Swenson
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant49/pageant49_image1.jpg
Miss Colorado USA '01 Katie Doland
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant49/pageant49_image2.jpg

As we can see, the Photogenic Award results during these 3 years were all HUGE disappointments, in my opinion.

Miss Georgia Tiffany Fallon should have won last year.
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant50/pageant50_image1.jpg
Miss South Carolina Lisa Rabon should have won in '00.
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant50/pageant50_image2.jpg
Miss South Carolina Lauren Poppell should have won in '99.
http://www.pageants.net/gregoryellenburg/images/3.jpg

The voting for the Arpeggio Photogenic Award in this year's Miss USA pageant will begin this coming Monday, February 18, 2002.

Just visit http://www.missusa.com

Please vote wisely. :)

Hi Apostle!

It's not what you might have been assuming. I believe Kimmy works part time for MTV. She was touring this group of guys who greatly admire Linkin Park. Part of that specific tour was to provide exposure for these guys regarding the lifestyle and routines that members of that band have.

MTV Becoming, as we all know, is a show wherein die hard fans literally get to be the artist they admire. The show culminates with the fans dressing up and acting exactly as their idol and recording a video of their favorite song of that same, chosen artist.

Oh my god! What has she done to herself? I'm not totally impressed! I'm so shocked! She literally looks like a man nga!

I'm SO SURE aayusin ni Osmel yan in time for the MU2002 in May. She would definitely not make it to the top 10 with that "look".

Saka I just wanted to share sana... last night I had QuickTime Player installed in my PC para naman I could watch some videos. I went to missuniverse.com and watched the evening gown prelim performances of Zorah and Eva E.

Lara, you are so right! Zorah lacked some spunk and flavor. It was really obvious she was nervous. But I was overwhelmed in a way since a lot of people were cheering for her. When she turned around and stepped up the plate, she did not strike a pose. (that trademark pose w/c Osmel-trained beauty queens normally do with both arms placed sharply on the waist)

Eva E., naman, was pretty and all that... however, she also lacked that certain va va voom. (well at least compared to Claudia, Veruska, and especially Minorka) Hindi rin siya nag-strike ng pose when she stepped up the plate after her performance. She simply stood straight. Walang kadating-dating. Pero the cheers accorded to her were so flattering talaga.

:)

This goes to show na tao rin pala ang mga Miss Venezuela titleholders... ang perception kasi ng maraming tao all over the world is perfect at flawless sila... Tignan niyo, konting panahon lang pala ang hihintayin para maglabasan ang mga flaws nila.

Take the case of Veruska and Carolina. Hindi naman sila ganyan ka-sawi at ka-panget during their times, di ba? And si Cynthia... ang ganda niya when she was crowned MV, di ba? Pero as time went by, lumabas din ang totoo niyang itsura.

I've seen pix of Minorka, Marena and Denyse before and after their stints in MU. Ibang-iba talaga ang itsura nila.

Only Barbara Palacios, in my opinion, was truly able to retain her beauty and freshness.

I'm beginning to conclude na yan ang effect ng plastic surgeries at make-overs na pinagagagawa ni Osmel sa kanila before he sent them to MU.

Medyo mahirap kasi icontact yung mga TV stations na yan regarding the Miss U tapes kasi there is some copyright thingies. And especially ABS kasi they're very very strict about it. I have a collection of Miss U tapes (galing USA given to me by a friend) with matching US commercials na kasama hehehe. I just don't know how to record it vhs to vhs.

Miss Universe 1991-2001 (lahat malinaw)
Miss U Prelims 1999, 2000, 2001 (only 2001 ang malinaw)
Miss U 2001 costume competition (malinaw din)

Hi Lara! Thanks for the wonderful and rare pics. :)

I hope ang mailagay na name niya sa official MU2002 website ay Cinthia and not Cynthia. "Cinthia" sounds and looks more exotic and deadly kasi eh. :) After all, it was the very same name that appeared in the official MV website, so why change it pa di ba? I really hope they stick to that and let it be.

As early as now, let's accept the fact na no matter what happens, hindi magpapatalo ang Venezuela this coming May. By now, we should have already understood how the minds of the MVO organizers work. The "scary" Cynthia that we saw kanina in this thread will be entirely different to the Cynthia we will see in May.

Sa simula lang yan... may mapa-publish na pics ng reigning Miss Venezuela na hindi mashadong stunning at appealing... pero when the month of May comes, tulala na lang tayo sa make-over na ginawa sa kanya.

Aside from your comment about her look in PR in May, I also read somewhere that her looks will be patterned exactly to that of her cousin Irene Saez. Her hair will be brought back to its original color, which is of course platinum blonde. This is the same hair color of Marena Bencomo, Kandace Krueger, Cindy Lauper, and Gwen Stefani.

Regarding Miss Bolivar Carolina Barrios, may laban siya for Miss Universe... very, very exotic! Sana she joined at a later year.

Maganda naman siya dito ah. Question lang, the reaction of people now about Cynthia, did they also do that to Eva last year? I mean was she also rediculed saying she looked this and that? Then when she reached Bayamon everyone got stunned and went agog over her.

Actually, last year a lot of people were complaining that Eva looked too old, probably in her thirties already... when in fact she has just turned 18 then. These were her pics released shortly after she was crowned Miss Venezuela.

GAME SHOWS IN PAGEANTS

After the successful "reformatting" of the Final 5 Q&A competitions in the year 2000 editions of Miss USA and Miss Teen USA, I strongly believe MUI should consider introducing this idea to Miss Universe 2002.

During Miss USA 2000, the Final 5 Q&A was called Who Wants To Be Miss USA?... obviously, MUI patterned it exactly after the then-hit game show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. Even the lighting effects and background music were adapted to give it a more exciting feel for all. There were Life Lines, of course. For the Phone A Friend option, the finalists were allowed to directly ask their family members, relatives, and friends who were among the audience.
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant54/pageant54_image1.jpg

During Miss Teen USA 2000, the Final 5 Q&A adapted Survivor's format. During the announcement of the Final 3, those whose names were called by host Brian McFaden were those who were "voted off" by the judges. Their respective torches were immediately extinguished after they left the stage. Only the top 3 remained. The stage was turned to a vast tropical jungle-- it really gave the audience and finalists a real feel of the game show itself.
http://www.pageant.net/teenusa2000/images/quest.jpg

I hope MUI reformats the Final 5 Q&A in MU2002... They should call it Who Wants To Be Miss Universe?, complete with life lines... I think it's a great idea. It would surely somehow pull its not-so-impressive television ratings.

Jensie, question lang, do you have press access din sa Miss U Press site? Where do you get those cool pics? Regarding the Finnish beauties? If you look closely, compare them with the Swedes and the Norwegians, they're features are kinda strong no? Unlike the Norwegians and the Swedes, mas soft ang features nila- they look like dolls. But this year, I'm placing my bet on the Norwegians. The Scandanavian ladies rule!!!!

Nope, in fact I never had any press access for any pageant... Research lang talaga through different search engines. Thanks for appreciating these pix. :)

Of all 5 Scandinavian countries, Sweden proves to be the most winningest and successful. It currently has 3 Miss Universe and 3 Miss World winners.

Thanks for the info regarding the Miss Curacao coronation date.

Oo nga noh! Finns, Swedes, Danes and tawag sa mga tao. Finnish, Swedish, and Danish naman ang tawag sa languages nila. Thanks for the correction, Lara! Very wise! :)

Hi there cathybee! :)

It was too much make-up that kept her from showing her true beauty... ironically, make-up would also be her "saviour" months later...

Sure she might not have had any plastic surgery at all, but it's undeniable that she really looked mature and old before she went to Puerto Rico.

Osmel was able to solve the predicament by hiring the best make-up artists that there were in Venezuela... incidentally the best in the whole world.

Regarding kay Aileen about her Photogenic award, well, it made me think before, baka kasi ang bakaw ng mga Pinoy sa Internet dati kaya nanalo tayo ng Miss Photogenic. hehehe Tapos that was the same thing that happened to Abbygail- narinig ko sa Showbiz Linggo after ng Miss Universe- "Sa susunod magpadala nalang tayo ng litrato sa Miss Universe." hehehe tawa nalang ako nun. But Aileen deserved it naman eh.

Just went sa Miss USA website and I saw that the Miss USA crown is valued at $650 meaning P33,800!!!! woah!!!! And her HOYA crystal trophy is worth- $3,200- P166,400.

Is that right ba Jensie? Well, my point of view is the number one trademark of the Venezuelan girls is that they wear TOOOOOO much make up. I think gusto ni Osmel yun eh. And I think the Miss Universe make up artists did a very good job with Eva because she looked so natural. She looked so fresh and youn in her official protrait, she wasn't wearing any thick make up. Magaling ang mga Miss Universe make up artists.

Yup, Leng really deserved it. I saw this girl in person na for a number of times... she may be short (around 5'6" lang talaga barefoot) but she's really stunning, lalung-lalo na pag naayusan ng husto.

Sige na nga, I'll reveal the price of the Bb. Pilipinas Universe crown. It's valued at US$406... equivalent to around Php 21,000. :)

Mahal talaga ang products ng Hoya because ibang klase ang materials nila-- hindi lang basta plain crystals... Yung crown naman mura compared doon kasi rhinestones lang naman ang composition niya.

Magaling ang mga Miss Universe make up artists.

Yup, ibang klase talaga ang mga make-up artists who work for Miss Universe. Gaganda talaga ang isang candidate kahit taga anong bansa pa siya... :)

If I'm not mistaken, Sasha Cosmetics is the official make-up sponsor for Miss Universe, as it is in Miss USA. For Miss Teen USA naman, it's Caboodles Cosmetics.

Part of the "redefined" image that MU, MUSA, and MTUSA has embarked on 2 years ago is to always exude freshness and vibrance among its annual delegates... that explains bakit ganun ang "fresh" na theme ng make-overs nila... :)

Maganda na nga ang quality ng make-up na ginagamit, magaling pa ang make-up artist... gaganda ka nga talaga! :)

BTW, it's International Gem & Jewelry Show, Inc. that produces the Miss Universe, Miss USA, & Miss Teen USA crowns every year.

So it means talaga, the redefined Miss Universe isn't that bad at all, because even if a lot of people are complaining (especially the pageant fans) about the changes, madami din nagawang maganda si Trump sa Miss UNiverse. The problem I guess with the pageant fans, they can't accept change, they want the "old" Miss Universe. WEll to tell you honestly, before the redefined Miss UNiverse, I find some portions of Miss Universe a tad boring. The only thing I liked back then was the Parade of Nations. Now, medyo exciting din ang evening gown and swimsuit competition. The top 10 interview for me was also boring. The little sisters, though very nostalgic for some, should not be brought back because it was also boring also.

TRIVIA TIME

Mona Grudt of Norway, holds the record for being the Miss Universe with the longest reign ever.

http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant55/pageant55_image1.jpg

She was crowned on April 15, 1990 and crowned her successor on May 17, 1991.

That's 1 year, 1 month and 2 days! :)

Barbara Palacios of Venezuela, on the other hand, holds the record for being the Miss Universe with the shortest reign ever.

http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant55/pageant55_image2.jpg

She was crowned on July 21, 1986 and crowned her successor on May 27, 1987.

That's only 10 months and 6 days! :)

Margaret Arviddson of Sweden holds the record for being the only Miss Universe to reign for exactly 1 year.

http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant55/pageant55_image3.jpg

She was crowned on July 16, 1966 and crowned her successor on July 16, 1967. :)

By the way, Margaret holds another record-- she's the first ever Miss Photogenic winner to win Miss Universe! Nothing really beats Swedish beauty! :)

If Marena and Eva's costumes resemble those worn in Gone In The Wind... Barbara's national costume is exactly the same as those worn in the classic Maverick. :)

Spectacular!

The only things I miss from the "old" Miss Universe pageant format are:

1. the preliminary scores flashed on the screen during the Parade of Nations.

2. the Interview competition during the semi-finals-- specifically during MU98 & MU99, which both adapted the World Tour format. This was very, very exciting.

I really would have loved to hear Sonia Rolland, Agbani Darego, Ilanit Levi, Elodie Gossuin, Evelyn Mikomagi, Corrinne Crewe, Heather Hamilton, Catalina Acosta, Eva Siso and Oxana Kalandyrets talk.

3. the special production number with all the contestants dancing and singing their hearts out together with the reigning Miss Universe.

4. the Top 3 format during the Final Q&A. I am not very comfortable with the 4th & 3rd runner-up format being brought back again-- it's so ancient already.

I want to see only the Top 3-- and from the top 3 are the 2nd & 1st runner-up and the Miss Universe winner.

5. the feature done for the next host country shown during the live telecast.

Other than these, I'm okay with the "redefined" theme that MUI adapted.

Actually the top 3 is more exciting nga. Mas may suspense. But I liked 2001's Parade of Nations, well wished they said more than just their countries names. But yung mga moving delegate pics sa background when each delegate is introduced- it was cool. And it's a good thing they brought back the sashes. And the evening gown competition last year was the BEST so far for me. Sobrang hip!!!!

Yup, it's a good thing MUI brought back the sashes. The MU2000 pageant suffered terribly low ratings after the semi-final interview competition and sashes were scrapped off.

I agree again with your comment on the evening gown competition last year. It was very cool! I can't find any word to describe it. The song used was "Same" (Ashley Beedles Front Affoart Remix) by Smith & Mighty featuring Tammy Payne.

Pero for me, the BEST evening gown competition ever was that during MU99... not only was Miriam there but also because Julio Iglesias Jr.'s performance and song were exceptionally good.

Jensie, where did you get the info about the Miss U 2000 ratings went down hill when they scrapped off the sashes? I think theycan do away with the sashes for Miss USA but not ofr Miss Universe.

Two U.S. pageant directors who were affiliated with MUI posted this info in a message board way back in June 2000. Unfortunately, I was not able to take down the URL of the site containing the TV ratings for MU2000... but it was way sooooo low.

OFF TOPIC: Just wanted to share something... Did you know that MU74 topped all TV ratings in the U.S. during its July 21 live telecast here in Manila? Too think there was a storm at the very moment the show was taking place. Signal #2 pa nga eh.

SOME NOTES:

-First of all.... YEHEY!!!! All of my 3 favorites made it-- Misses Oland, Halsingland and Goteborg!!! If you could go back to page 30 of this thread... I placed my bets on them. I hope any of them wins the title! :)

-Second, thanks Lara for the Miss Suomi 2002 update! I'm doubtful on Janette Broman's chances in MU2002. Norway and Sweden na lang ang clear hope natin to break the Scandinvian dry spell in MU. :)

-Miss Uppland Malou Hansson is the only black delegate in Froken Sverige 2002, and she made it to the semis! If she wins, she'll be the first woman of color to go represent Sweden in Miss Universe.

-Miss Narke Senada Selman is the tallest in this year's semis. Let's go see if "height is might" in this year's contest.

-Miss Gotland Irini Tsakalou seems to be part Greek.

-Miss Goteborg Sofia Sjoholm strongly resembles Miss World USA 2000 Angelique Breaux!

-Miss Oland Emma Fredriksson resembles Miss Europe 2001 Elodie Gossuin!

Stay tuned for the crowning of Froken Sverige 2002 on February 25, 2002, Monday next week.

Kung sa bagay, napansin ko nga na mahilig sa makapal na make up ang venezuelans, actually, ang recollection ko sa kanila ay big lips (with matching bloody red lipstick), brushed up hair (parang trade mark na nga nila eto eh), and eyelined eyes (meaning putting dark eyeliner to open their eyes more e considering malaki na rin naman eyes nila hehe).....tapos white gown (iniisip ko pa nga kung may nagibang kulay na gown sa kanila eh....)

Hi cathybee! :)

You're so observant! Correct! White gowns have been one of Venezuela's well-established trademarks in beauty pageants... in my opinion, no other country can generally carry white gowns as perfect as Venezuela does. WHITE IS CLEARLY THE COLOR THAT KILLS!

As of recent memory, Alicia Machado, Milka Chulina, Carolina Izsak and Jackeline Rodriguez were the only ones who wore non-white gowns. The rest wore white... or at least with shades and hues of white... (take the case Claudia Moreno who wore a metallic silverish corset gown)

Alicia wore a mint green gown. Milka wore an orange balloon gown. Carolina Izsak and Jackeline wore stunning navy blue gowns.

So far, 43 delegates have been already crowned in their local pageants. These 43 ladies are now on their way to San Juan in May.

We have yet to see the delegates from...
the Caribbean...
Antigua & Barbuda- March pa daw ang crowning according to Lara
Curacao- March din daw
Jamaica- March 24, 2002-- let's see if the US$1M prize will bring its 1st ever MU... well, I doubt it. :)
US Virgin Islands- March din

South America...
Argentina- not sure if it'll send a representative due to its worst crisis in years.
Brazil- March 16, 2002-- I hope Miss Parana Keli Kaniak wins!
Chile- No definite date yet...
Ecuador- No deifinite date either...
Peru- Still no definite date...
Uruguay- No date din...

North & Latin America...
El Salvador- March 15, 2002-- goodluck to whoever wins... this year's competition is tough...
Guatemala- March 2002
Nicaragua- March 2, 2002-- like I've said, this nation is back on the right track. Check the pageant's website for the beautiful candidates.
USA- March 1, 2002-- need I say more!? Kasi Kelly should start packing for San Juan. :)

Africa...
Botswana- March pa ata...
Egypt- the week after Holy Week pa ang crowning ng rep nila.
Zimbabwe- March 2002 din
Ghana- March pa din
Nigeria- March pa din...

Europe & the Mediterranean...
Croatia- TBA
Estonia- March 8, 2002
Greece- March 22, 2002-- himala! they usually pick their MU rep a week before the MU pageant proper!
Hungary- March 22, 2002
Netherlands- March din
Norway- March 17, 2002-- Lara and I are counting on this Scandinavian nation to break the ice in MU2002.
Slovak Republic- TBA
Slovenia- TBA
Sweden- February 25, 2002-- next Monday na! I hope Emma Fredriksson wins! If she wins, I'm counting on Sweden too!
Ukraine- TBA

Asia & the lands Down Under...
Guam- March 2002
Israel- March 14, 2002-- I just hope no one bombs the stage where the pageant's gonna take place! The local candidates should all wear bullet-proof vests din. Joke! :)
Japan- February 22, 2002-- the best Japanese contestants I've seen in years! This coming Friday na ito! :)
Malaysia- March 23, 2002-- the pageant will take place in the Genting Highlands area. Cool!
New Zealand- TBA
Northern Marianas- TBA
Philippines- March 16, 2002-- Final Screening na sa Saturday! Sa Ali Mall yun! (unless the venue was changed)
Singapore- March 2002
Taiwan- TBA
Thailand- March 28, 2002
Turkey- TBA

If you'll notice, ASIA ang may pinakamaraming countries na wala pa ring representative for MU2002! Lagi namang ganyan eh-- cramming kaya bad results lagi every year. Korea ang pinakamaaga mag-crown ng representative... May pa lang meron na.

I'm still hoping Australia, Austria, Barbados, Denmark, Great Britain, Iceland, Lithuania, and Zambia would field representatives in MU this year... the more, the merrier di ba? :)

Yup... sorry I was talking about Venezuelan gowns in Miss Universe kanina...

Aside from Spain being called in the 1st spot since MU99, those who were called in the 5th spot (also from MU99-MU2001) finished 1st runner-up!

Miriam, Claudia & Evelina were all called in the 5th spot and they all finished 1st RU!

5 seems to be Miriam's lucky number...
-she was candidate #5 during Bb. Pilipinas '99.
-in MU99, she was called in the 5th spot during the announcement of the Top 10.
-she was again called in the 5th spot during the announcement of the Top 5.

MISS USA 2002 UPDATES

Sara Evans will perform in the Miss USA 2002 live telecast. She is a well-known country singer in the US.
http://sara.country.tzo.com/images/wpe28479.gif

Dr. Joyce Brothers and Survivor Africa contestant Kimberly Powers will sit as judges during the live telecast. It's quite surprising that there are only 2 judges during the finals night! Panibagong gimmick na naman ito ng MUI...

Take note that it's the 5th time Dr. Brothers will be judging in the Miss USA pageant. She has judged earlier in 1973, 1974, 1995 and 1999, where Amanda Jones, Karen Morrison, Chelsi Smith and Kimberly Pressler won respectively. No wonder MUI officials love her for her good judgment since Chelsi went on to become USA's 6th Miss Universe. MUI considers Dr. Brothers as their "lucky charm". Amanda won 1st runner-up to our very own Margie Moran way back in '73. Karen made it to the Top 12 in MU74 held here in Manila. Surprisingly, only Kimmy failed to make the cut...

In defense of her decision of voting for Kimmy Pressler during Miss USA '99, Dr. Brothers chose her because she gave a good answer and because she's not had any pageant experience at all. According to Dr. Brothers, its best to select a beauty queen without any experience in modelling, acting, singing or basically anything that has to do with the performing arts and fashion industry. This is so because it'll be easier to train that particular beauty queen since she'll be able to create her own style and moves-- for short, there'll be no space for stereotyping and imitations of all sorts.

Kim Powers joined Survivor Africa... which is why she knows the pressure that the 51 delegates for the title of Miss USA 2002 will go through.

Here are the preliminary judges:

Melissa Forman

Melissa has the ear of the Chicago listeners at WLIT-FM 93.9, where she is famous for crazy stunts including dog fighting in fighter planes, hanging from a crane for days at a time and living in a mall for almost a week. Melissa has also interviewed music greats such as Billy Joel and James Taylor.

Linda Grasso

Linda works as a correspondent for E! News Daily. She is E!'s woman on the street, a news reporter with style who's in the field on Hollywood's breaking stories, celebrity court cases, films in production and movie premieres.

Mimi James

Mimi has been the Vice President of Talent and Casting at VH1 Network for the past six years, where she oversees the casting of all hosts, VJs and celebrities that appear on the network and in the original made for television movies.

Charlie Katz

Charlie is Senior Vice President – Strategic Marketing for Universal Music Enterprises. He is responsible for the development and implementation of integrated marketing campaigns, direct-to-consumer programs, publicity, creative, brand management initiatives and strategic partnerships.

Corey Redmond

Corey is co-founder of Treston & Redmond, LLC, an international business consulting and management firm. He has experience with many facets of international business and the entertainment industry. He is involved in the business management of notable entertainers, personalities and professional athletes including Tyrese and Ahman Greene.

Ngayon ko lang napansin yung picture ni Evelina... geesh she was indeed pretty during her crowning!!! I feel kinda sad that she's going to give up her crown soon. Well, she's going to be one of the most loved 1st runner ups.

Regarding the Miss USA judges I think ganun last year ganun din nangyari sa Miss Universe, they did not release the complete list of judges.

Hi Lara!

I agree! She'll go down in world pageant history as one of the most loved Miss Greece titleholders ever... Evelina's beauty was phenomenal. At this point, let's accept the fact that it may take a while until Greece puts on a good show again in MU... remember that this Mediterranean country had to wait for 7 long years after Rea's superb performance in MU94 (imagine finishing 2nd in a pageant with 76 other co-competitors! It's not an easy task!) before it could make it again to the semis... and Evelina nearly pulled it!

Shucks! They really look great! Pinay na pinay ang dating ni Mississippi. I'm betting on these two delegates and hoping na manalo ang isa sa kanila lalo na si Miss Mississippi para dalwa rin ang Pinays na sasali sa MU 2002 like Venezuela and Germany, India, Canada and T&T. Sino pa ba? Hopin for the best para sa 2 delegates na ito.

Tama ka nga Lara. Seems so dark ang delegate headshots. Most likely, ganito rin ang pattern ng MU 2002 delegate head shot.

How about nakapost na rin ako, finally! Actually, I was supposed to post a "novel" yesterday, pero nagbisyo ang internet explorer ko, so, nabura ang nobela ko. Grrrrrr!

Cristina Gonzales (candidate for Miss Nicaragua) looks Pinay. Actually, kamukha siya ni Monina Bagatsing (Star Circle talent yata).

How about Marena Bencomo looking like Goldilocks in her national costume? With matching goody-two-shoes expression pa talaga e. Pero, ang favrotie ko talagang Ms. V national costume, like the rest of the gang ata, is Eva's. Ano kaya ang susuotin ni Cynthia?

Speaking of Cynthia, how about, sa aking humble opinion, ang PANGIT niya! Di talaga ako nagagandahan sa kanya. I'd expect Osmel's magic wand (and scissors, scalpel, drill, etc.) to make her more presentable, but di ko talaga siya type. She looks dumb pa talaga. Walang vavavoom. Maskinakabahan na tuloy ako kay Miss Spain, lalo na na maganda ang pinapakita nila over the past few years, banking on their flaws pa talaga (Diana with her big teeth and Miss S 2000 with her pixie face). At masmaganda naman si Lorena kesa kay Cynthia no!

RE the "redefined" Miss U, ok na sa akin lahat ng portions, except tangalin na nga ang opening number na guest performer, parang di naman sila ang show e. The show is supposed to be about the girls, e di dapat sila ang mag-open di ba! Tsaka huwag sanang putol-putol ang isang portion (3 girls tapos mtv tapos 3 na naman) kasi parang nasisira ang momentum. The rest ok na. Pero agree din ako na mas exciting ang final 3.

RE Miss USA photos, ang panget ng black/violet background ha. Sana ginawa na lang buong violet or buong black.

RE Miriam-Mpule pic. Pansinin niyo ang girl sa likod ni Mpule (was that Miss Aruba?). Parang nandiri.

Speaking of Miss Aruba, weird ang bansang (?) ito. Sometimes maganda ang pinapadala, minsan panget. Parang Pinas.

About Kim Powers, oks na si Li'l Kim (her nickname in Africa) ang pinajudge nila. Kesa naman si "From Genius to Bit*h" Kelly. Baka ipapapick pa niya ng number ang mga candidates sa final question.

3 days 'til Bb. Pilipinas deadline, right?

Keep the fotos and the info coming!

My god! What happened to Juliet! She looks older-- probably in her mid-thirties! She should have brought down her hair... she's a lot more sexier that way eh! I'm not impressed at all! She will definitely NOT WIN the Arpeggio Photogenic Award!!! To think these official headshots will be the basis for the online voting!

I'm placing my bet on Heather instead! :)

However, I just want to clarify that this "look" of Juliet has got nothing to do with my top 10 predictions... Of course I still consider her a contender for the Miss USA crown. A little "spark" in her preliminary swimsuit and "spunk" in her preliminary evening gown, and she'll definitely earn a spot in the top 10.

I agree with your comment regarding the violet background... it's not appealing at all...

The judging panel for this year's Bb. Pilipinas pageant will certainly include ambassadors, attaches, consuls, fashion designers and other celebrities...as it has traditionally been over the years.

I hope Gloria Diaz doesn't sit as a judge this year... I believe she's the main reason for the failures of top contenders Lara Quigaman, Imee Martinez, Angie Yambao and Joan Dimaliuat to make it to the Top 10.

The Final Screening is on Saturday, Feb. 23.

The hundred or so girls will be narrowed down to just 25-30. They then become this year's official candidates. Brace yourselves and prepare for the best and inevitable! :)

The updated Bb. Pilipinas website will follow soon! :)

Speaking of Miss Aruba, weird ang bansang (?) ito. Sometimes maganda ang pinapadala, minsan panget. Parang Pinas.

Yup I agree. Miss Aruba 2002 Deyanira Frank is not a contender for the MU crown... this year's competition is very, very tough... she'll definitely be eaten and swallowed alive...

She's the best black South American MU delegate I've seen so far... Miss Venezuela '99 Carolina Indriago, Miss Brazil '86 Deise de Souza and Miss Ecuador '96 Monica Chala are next in line.

If she maintains this aura and look, she'll definitely make it to the semis... or better, she might even win!

If the plan to send this year's Bb. Pilipinas Universe to Mumbai to train does not push through at all, she'll be sent to La Quinta Miss Venezuela again! She'll train with Cynthia and Vanessa the very way Zorah did with Eva and Andrea last year...

Miss Rio Grande do Sul Josiane de Oliveira is also a very, very strong contender. She hails from the very same state the reigning queen Julianna Borges is from. Miss Brazil '93 Leila Schuster and Miss Brazil '99 Renate Fan are some of the queens of recent memory who also hail from the same state. Ieda Vargas, who went on to become Miss Universe 1963 is also from that state kaya bigatin talaga ito.

Well, regarding sa delegate photos, not necessarily it would be the same pattern for Miss Universe. Like last year, the headshot background for Miss USA is blue and half body shots sila. then sa Miss Universe naman, pink background and only head shots lang.
Basta di ko nagustuhan yung pag make up this year sa ibang Miss USA kasi they look old. Well, sino ba dito use Netscape as their browser? Kasi mas nauuna inaupdate ang Miss USA site for Netscape then in Explorer. I have yet to see Texas and Tennessee's pics.

Tennessee- well she looks older in this pic. mas gusto ko yung dati niyang shot.

Sacha Cosmetics has been the make-up sponsor for both Miss USA & Miss Universe since 1999.

This year, it's Arpeggio Cosmetics.

Caboodles Cosmetics naman sa Miss Teen USA.

Grabe! sana palitan ng BPCI ang tactics nila to get one judge. Sana yung credible like top fashion designers, former beauty queens etca. ang kunin nila di katulad nung mga previous years na puro ambassadors ng ibang country, honchos etca na wala namang masyadong alam at di masyadong meticulous pagdating sa mga ganitong aspect.

Ganda nga talaga ni Miss Parana at ni Miss Rio Grande do Sul. If one of them wins, Misses USA, Colombia, Puerto Rico, India and Venezuela will be given a tough job for the MU crown.

I think Miss Mississippi is my bet for Miss Photogenic for the Miss USA 2002.

O nga eh. Carly should have opted for a 2-piece. Maganda siya Lara. At first I was really skeptical about her chances... pero habang tumatagal... she's slowly inching her way into my prediction list. :)

Parang kinda alangan din ako sa theme ng swimsuits nila... very corny... to think Blue Point manufactured these swimsuits. Blue Point, as we all know, is based in Athens, Greece.

For the swimsuit competition, I think it would be safe to conclude na gone were those days when a performer would provide the background music... I hope MUI patterns it after the swimsuit competition of MU2001... ambient music na lang or techno... after all, we're already in the 21st century.

Miss Brasil 2002 will be held on March 16, 2002, Saturday. The city of Rio de Janeiro will host the big event.

Keli Kaniak of PARANA is one of the strong contenders. She was Sereia das Piscinas do Paraná 2000 and Miss Curitiba 2001.

She's currently in the U.S.-- in the middle of intense preparations for the upcoming Miss Brasil pageant. She's being trained by top beauty pageant consultant Gerson Antonelli. Hi Guys!

Assuming BPCI breaks gold this year by harvesting a Major International Crown for us, their hard works as well as their cohorts will be well delighted. So what if BPCI won't really break the losing circle cycle? What if BPCI were not up to snuff to give us a global crown this year? Hi again! :)

Don't you worry... may panahon din naman tayo... just like what happened to India in 2000 and Puerto Rico last year... panahon lang talaga nila... even Venezuela could not beat them... FOR NOW, that is!

I believe it won't take long until someone from our country breaks the dry spell in any of the Big 3.

The last time we made it in Miss World was in 1994. Cara Subijano was a semi-finalist.
The last time we made it in Miss International was in 1998. Collette Centeno Glazer was part of the Top 15.
...And need I say more? Everyone knows Miriam is considered our latest pride in Miss Universe. (of course, how can we ever forget Zorah's spectacular costume that won for her, and for us Filipinos, the 1st runner-up award for the national costume last year) :)

May panahon din naman tayo... the next time a Filipina makes it into the semis in any of the Big 3... she can easily land in the Top 5... and even win! Just like what our folks used to say... May awa ang Diyos! :)

Hi Lara!

Unlike the Organizacion Miss Venezuela, which has commissioned top local designers Angel Sanchez and Jose Maria Almeida to be the official designers for the Venezuelan representatives, I believe there isn't really an "official" evening gown designer for the Brazilian representatives. Different designers get to create gowns for the Miss Brazil winners every year... which is why there is no uniformity and consistency in their evening gown presentations.

However, I read somewhere before that there was one top Brazilian designer who created gowns for the Miss Brazil titleholders during the late 90s. His name is Ocimar Versolato.

She will compete in the Miss Egypt Universe 2002 pageant scheduled to take place on April 16, 2002, Tuesday. The big event will take place at the Semiramis Interontinental Hotel in Cairo. At this point, she's favored to win the Miss Egypt Universe crown.

Raghda Ayoub (right) together with her 2nd runner-up Essra Zaytoun. (who happened to be another bet of mine!)

I dont think that it is a curse kung saan nakapwesto ang candidate (taas or baba) ang laging nanalo. I think it can be more of a coincidence na laging nasa tuktok o nasa baba ang halos lahat ng natatawag sa semifinals.

Oh well, What if there's a sudden ice breakage? A twist of fate, I may say. What if this year, halos lahat ng tawagin na semifinalists, asa gitna ng group shot? In my opinion, I think its a matter of luck kung mapasama sila sa semifinals lalo ngayon na there are a lot of delegates from different countries ang kasali. Every year, the competition gets tougher and more countries have been joining and chances na mapasama sa semifinals ang isang delegate is very slim kaya siguro, yung ibang countries, cost cutting. They tend to 'recycle' their delegates and let them join a minor pageant after MU. Oh well, my point is getting nowhere so i guess, bottom line there is good fortune. :D

wonder when they can duplicate her feat, even surpass . . . and hopefully, we could get it with this year's batch, and not just HYPE some girls which we think is the best but during pageant night, did not even become a semi - finalist
