What if she joined Miss U? MAs nagbloom siya compared kay Lara- agree?

Chez-o, were you able to watch the Femina Miss India Prelims? How did you know na tumaba si Neha?

My favorite Miss Venezuela costume- kay Eva Ekvall, Carolina Indriago, and kay Marena Bencombo. Pinaka ayaw ko, yung kay Claudia.

Did Miss Paraguay '92 place in the top three of Best in National Costume Competition?

Someone posted this on the Mabuhay MB!

Someone has posted an article in Spanish on Pageant HQ message board. The article mentions several Miss Venezuela contestants who might be eligible to run for titles in other countries. Don't quote me exactly on this because I had to use Altavista translation.

Since Natasha Borger's victory as Miss Germany Universe, many Venezuelans and pageant officials are discussing which delegates could represent other countries at Miss Universe. It seems that Ligia Petit could probably run for Miss Antigua & Barbuda (or was it Aruba - please forgive my memory) because her father came from that island. Jerika Hoffman might be eligible to run for Miss England. Vanessa Cardenas, Miss Venezeula World 2001, has a Chilean mother and could be Miss Chile. Lorena Delgado has Cuban heritage so she could represent the free Cubans of Miami. The real topper was this: Aura Zambrano could run for Miss Philippines if in fact she has a Filipino grandmother.

Has anyone heard of this? Does Aura have a Filipino grandparent? It would be fascinating if she did. Not so much so she could run for Miss Philippines but just to show the diversity of the Venezuelan people. I would like to know more about this. So if anyone else has any knowledge or comments, please feel free to reply.

==============================================

Any comments? and/or violent reactions?

Aura sasali sa Bb? She's more latina then Pinay. Wala siyang Pinoy blood in her- metaphorically speaking. I bet di marunong magtagalog yun. Ano yung gagawin ng mga Venezolanos na yan? Parang bawat bansa mga Venezuelans ang magrerepresent sa kanila- that's too much.

But she won Best in Costume right?

I remembered her from all of my Mommy's stories about her winning in Manila. Yes, she also bared her breasts in that movie. But I guess it's normal (usual?) for them, right? Or talagang kinda porn actress siya?

i read somewhere na actually, she's not a porn actress daw...i mean baring in movies /tv is normal for spanish/european countries...well i guess this is true...mas sexual/sensual naman ata sila kesa sa americans...and she didnt like ata winning the ms universe crown kaya lang she was told na she can pass her title after six months pa....

Pano ba namang hindi sasama ang loob ni Alicia kay Brooke...

During the 1997 Miss USA pageant, the final question had so much to do with beauty queens and their physical appearance before and after they have won the crown. I can't remember the exact question. Brooke answered it with wit and spontaneity. Parang she said na "It doesn't really matter to me what I looked on the day I was crowned and the day I give away my crown. Beauty comes from inside out and it really didn't matter to me what I looked on the outside because I know I still am the same girl who won the crown that day..." To make matters worse, Alicia was a guest of honor during Miss USA 97. She assisted in the crowning of Brooke. Well, in the picture below, Alicia seems happy pa. :)

http://www.pageant.com/missusa97/images/usa150_1454.jpg

During the MU97 final question naman, the 3 finalists were asked: If there was one day and you could be outrageous, what would you do? With confidence and true wit, Brooke answered: I would eat everything... I would eat everything in the world...(laughs) You do not understand... I would eat everything twice! The audience automatically cheered her. This simple answer won for her the MU crown.

Her answers BOTH in Miss USA and MU were made in reference to the weight problem that Alicia was going through at that time. TIME magazine reported that she gained a scandalous 30 lbs. after she won MU96. It further reported that her 1st runner-up, Taryn Mansell of Aruba, must be prepared for any eventuality of a replacement. MUI denied these reports and affirmed that it was not concerned about the physical appearance of their queen. They further stated that it doesn't really matter even if the reigning MU gets fatter as long as she does her duties well.

So siyempre... aside from Marena winning only 1st runner-up, Alicia was naturally hurt after she felt that Brooke had just embarrassed her in front of a worldwide audience.

Splendid! Anyway, i studied Spanish during my college years. Here goes. . .

This is the typical suit that ERIKA will wear in Puerto Rico, this is called "GOLD MAYA". This is a typical male bird and suited for her measurement since this is a precious bird. Go ERIKA, you have the support of the people. Just be very happy by representing us. The best and GOOD ROAD be with you.

Lara_Ganda_ko: Thanks for posting here the spectacular national costume that Erika is set to wear in MU2002. I'm so sure it will be noticed by the judges. :)

SOME UPDATES ON BB. PILIPINAS 2002

- a pre-school teacher who does part time modeling during her free time is all set to file her application as an official candidate for this year's Bb. Pilipinas. I'm sorry I can't reveal her identity now or even her alma mater. I assure you this is the start of a "good" year for the pageant.

- most of the applicants so far are fresh graduates based in the Makati CBD. Others are teachers just like the girl I mentioned above. It can't be confirmed as of now if any actress is joining the pageant.

- there's a circulating rumor that the Bb. Pilipinas Universe winner will be flown NOT to Caracas, Venezuela but to Mumbai, India to be trained and groomed for MU2002. She will be trained together with the Femina Miss India Universe winner. However, a Colombian designer will still be commissioned to design the national costume and evening gown and cocktail dresses that our representative will be bringing to PR in late April.

- another rumor has it that Indian designer Hermant Trivedi will be commissioned to take part in designing the accessories that our MU representative will be bringing with her to PR.

- Remember, these are ALL RUMORS until proven TRUE. I will confirm them soon.

Regarding the Mexican costumes, paminsan minsan napaka plain looking ng costume nila (like last year, 1997, 1995, 1996, etc.) then in some years talagang woah!!!! Like 2002, 2000, 1994, 1993, 1998, 1999, etc) Let's just wait kung may tatalo pa dito this year- other contenders I guess Brazil and Venezuela.

I just finished watching Miss U 1994, and I would say that's the only MU pageant that i watched na sobrang high in energy and very emotional ang delegates saka ang crowd. That year was really emotional. during the credits I saw Michelle Van Eimeren and Lu Parker crying while carrying their little sister. Bakit kaya? Miskina our set designes weren't that great like in T&T, Mexico city or in Thailand, I think ang nagpabuhay sa pageant dito ay yung mga tao. And we're very lucky na it was held here.

no prob. It's ok if our girl will be flown to India para naman ma enhance ang speaking abilities niya and magkaroon ng depth ang kanyang sinasabi. May paninindigan and character ang mga siniasabi niya and not the usual "pa-cute" and mababaw that we hear oh so often from our girls. What really ticks me off is that PATI BA NAMAN NATIONAL COSTUME NATIN FORIEGNER ANG GAGAWA????? SURE THEY CAN MAKE THE GOWNS BUT "THEM" MAKING THE COSTUME IS A VERY VERY BIG SLAP IN THE FACE SATIN!!! AGREE??? WE CAN DO OUR OWN NATIONAL COSTUMES AND EVEN BETTER. Geesh I really hate Madame Stella!!!!! Lumalabas na wala talaga siyang believe sa Pinoy.

However, a Colombian designer will still be commissioned to design the national costume and evening gown and cocktail dresses that our representative will be bringing to PR in late April.

Did you know that our country narrowly beat the city of Istanbul, Turkey in the bid to host MU94? Reports had it that CBS, the official US broadcaster of MU, greatly considered convenience and practicality when it chose Manila over Istanbul.

If Istanbul hosted MU94, the live telecast would have started as early as 2 in the morning just to be tapat with the 7PM local time in New York. As we all know, CBS is based in NY. (What's so special with this 7 PM time slot? It's the primetime schedule for CBS's special events back then. Currently, it's 9 PM na.) This would have been very inconvenient for the delegates. The live telecast here in Manila began promptly at 8 AM and ended sometime between 10:45-11:00 AM on May 21, 1994, Saturday.

Kung budget lang ang pag-uusapan ay doble o triple pa ang budget ng Turkey Host Committee compared to that of the Philippine Host Committee. If my memory serves me right, only US$1.5 million was allotted by our country to host MU94.

We are really LUCKY. :)

Really?? I was speechless ah.... hehehe where did you get that info? So how come Turkey did not try to host Miss U this time? sayang. Kasi I know when it comes sa budget mura naman talaga dito eh. But I think if Turkey would host Miss U there would be 2 delegates na di sasali- Miss Cyprus and Miss Greece. Remember nung 2000 right?

In response to your comment regarding the national costume being designed by a foreigner...

Nina Ricci Alagao was all set to design the national costume and evening gown she would be wearing for the MU2000 Presentation Show. However, due to Madame Stella's "intervention", this long-time dream of her's went to the drain.

Everything she brought to Nicosia- her lingerie, casual apparel, cocktail dresses, and even her underwear- were reportedly all imported! Actually, the only thing "Filipino" per se on MU2000 was Nina Ricci herself! Everything has been designed by Alfredo Barraza, the Colombian designer who's also responsible for all of Miss Colombia's wardrobe set every year. The rest of Nina's clothes were bought by Madame Stella de Araneta on her numerous shopping trips abroad.

This is the main reason why the best of our local designers are keeping distance from BPCI...

I got this info back in late 1993 from:

1. My friend who read it from an international newspaper
2. Manila Bulletin when it confirmed Manila's victory in its bid to host MU94
3. Mabuhay Pageants Message Board- Actually, this was where I got to confirm it. A lot of people replied to my message back then and confirmed that they had also read and heard of this before

MORE MU94 TRIVIA:

- Did you know that Charlene Gonzalez was a guest of honor during Miss USA 1994? The Philippines was featured in that pageant as the venue for MU94. Charlene also met with Miss Hawaii USA 1994 Nadine Tañega who was born in Cavite but transferred to Honolulu at a young age. Nadine made it to the Top 12 but failed to advance to the Final 6.

That year, Miss South Carolina Frances Louise "Lu" Parker won the title over heavy favorite Miss Virginia Pat Southall, who topped the Interview and Jantzen Swimsuit competitions, and even snagged the Miss Photogenic award! Both were teachers back then. Charlene was present onstage during Lu's crowning. Dayanara awarded her the Miss USA sash, Miss Teen USA Charlotte Lopez of Vermont gave her the roses, while outgoing queen Kenya Moore of Michigan crowned her.

- 1994 was the last year when the Little Sisters participated during the Evening Gown competition. There also was a Little Miss Universe pageant sort of thing among the Little Sisters themselves and Little Miss Namibia won. She's that cute short-haired girl to whom the camera zoomed in shortly before Sushmita appeared onstage.

- The Philippines was also featured in the Miss Netherlands pageant of 1994. They showcased the basic tourist spots in the country. Irene van de Laar won the title that year.

- Miss World 2nd Princess 1993 Ruffa Gutierrez crowned Rea Toutounzi during the culmination of the Star Hellas Greece pageant of 1994. This was "reportedly" part of Ruffa's many commitments as the reigning Miss World 2nd Princess. (I find this weird talaga. Why her when she was only 2nd runner-up? and why a winner from MW when the lady to be crowned will be sent to MU? Weird talaga!) The pageant took place barely a week before the MU94 delegates were due in Manila.

After knowing what Madame Stella did to Nina the more nanghinayang ako sa kanya... tsk tsk. Now you believe me na wala na talagang kahit anong power si Pitoy. Honestly I wish na sana we won't make the top 10 for a couple of years. Para mademoralize yang si Stella so she could realize that SHE is the root cause why we stink in Miss U. Agree? I just really hate her. And I know a lot of Pinoys share this sentiment. The Miss India's kept on winning because eveything they have are Indian. i don't want the Philippines to win if she carries everything Colombian. But all of this opinions would mean nothing unless somebody would do something about it.

Hello pageant fans! You know who I saw awhile ago at Cafe Rizal in Greenbelt? Well, it was none other than Nina Ricci Alagao!! I was kinda starstruck for a moment there to tell you honestly. She's really gorgeous. She was seated by the window with a female friend and had her hair tied nakapusod. She had a nice back, too, huh? Nice shoulders. And nice tanned skin. Beats me why she was really not noticed at Miss U 2000 (was it?)

Anyway, I dunno but I have this thing with Bb. Pilipinas-Universe winners. Back in '99, I was also fortunate enough to interview Charlene Gonzales for a class project. In fact, we had the interview videotaped and submitted to our professor. Like Nina, she's also very pretty in person even sans the makeup. Very kind and accomodating too! :) Good day to you all!

Actually Lara, I wanna share something with you pa...

Zora told me that during MU2001, she got along better with the black delegates more than she did with the Asians. Of all the Asians, closest siya kay Celina Jaitley. Her room mate was Mei Chin Tung of Malaysia, who did not speak a word of English at all. She bonded with Jo-Ann Strauss (her bestfriend) and Miss US Virgin Islands Lisa Wynne, whom she eventually voted for Miss Congeniality. She also had the chance to talk and spend time with Agbani...

There was an instance when there was a function and they were all required to wear evening gowns. This wasn't the Presentation Show yet ha. Agbani didn't have a gown to wear at that particular moment. (I forgot the reason behind it. I'll ask Zora again) So Agbani went to Zora for help. She asked Zora if she could borrow "one of her gowns since Zora had a LOT of gowns... You know what? Zora felt really bad. She COULD NOT LEND ANYTHING AT ALL... EVEN AN EARRING OR SHAWL... Zora told me that all her accessories and stuff were owned exclusively by BPCI and only the Philippine representative had the right to wear them. Zora was "legally" prohibited from lending any of her stuff to any delegate as included in her contract drafted with BPCI. I'm sure she knew this beforehand since she's a law student herself. I don't find anything really wrong with this per se, because that is BPCI's right... pero parang sobra naman.

Even if she wanted to lend Agbani kahit na maliit na accessory lang she really couldn't. This is because may BPCI representatives doon na present sa PR. Saka most, if not all, of her pictures are flashed daily in Global Beauties. BPCI regularly checks that site. Makikita daw nila. And alam nila lahat ng accessories at clothes niya to the tiniest of details.

Agbani understood Zora's point and they are still friends up to this very moment you are reading this post. :)

Gawin nila what Miss Japan Miss Universe and T&T did, they only select the winner for Miss Universe. Eerytime you tell these stories all I can do is shrug kasi sayang talaga mga delegates natin. Stuck in a time warp talaga.

Finally it's Friday!!!!

sinner: nope, set (sony entertainment television) holds tv rights to femina miss india. sorry di mapapanuod sa zee.

diana noguerra also said in an interview that she thought miriam was always a frontrunner and she that she was winning the pageant at nashock daw siya nung si mpule ang nanalo (courtesy of tve [and my rusty spanish].

sushmita actually returned to manila a year after winning to lay a wreath sa tomb of the unknown soldier. i also read in femina (the magazine) that she was most intimidated with the latinas because sthey were always in a "united front" and they were always speaking in spanish even in the company of non-spanish speaking delegates. she also didn't drink the champagne (or wine?) during her ceremonial toast. she also felt sad for miss phlippines charlene gonzales after almost everyone isolated her because she won best in national costume. one staunch protestor is the very opinionated miss thailand, areeya chumsai.

bt. madame stella...hay naku.....no comment.

Regarding kay Charlene, pati naman ako nagreact when she won Best in National Costume. She should'nt have joined being the host delegate. What did you mean Miss Thailand being a staunch protester?

REgarding kay Madame Stella, I've said my piece na. She was lucky with Mirriam but I doubt if she could get lucky again.

Zora told me before na mabait naman personally si Madame Stella de Araneta. In fact, after she was crowned Bb. Pilipinas Universe last year, Madame Stella was teasing Zora that she strongly resembled Miriam and that she would definitely do well and even surpass Am's achievement.

Regarding Nina naman, after what happened to her... siguro naman we can assume ourselves na hindi siya natuwa sa mga nangyari sa kanya sa Cyprus because of Madame Stella. Nina and Am strongly supported Zora all the way. When Zora arrived in Bayamon, a Filipino was kind enough to give her a cellular phone. Yes, he gave it to her for free as a gesture of support. Because of this, Zora regularly received tips and support from Miriam, Nina, Rhea, Maricarl, Michelle, and Maricar. When Zora was in La Quinta Miss Venezuela training with Osmel and Eva, Miriam repeatedly boosted her morale through her daily text messages.

YES, Zora told me she was actually able to talk and spend some time with Denise before and after she won MU. Mabait at sweet daw si Denise. She told me that during their three weeks of roaming around malls and tourist spots in PR, it was only her, Denise and Eva Siso who always got the most autograph requests. Eva Siso was a huge favorite because Puerto Ricans admire their rich Spanish heritage. Zora told me that she herself was popular because of the huge Filipino population there. She said that if she wasn't mistaken, Filipinos account for the largest Asian race there... and to add to this, most of the Puerto Rican mens' wives are Filipinas.

Zora further told me that Denise won because she satisfied all of the judges' requirements... she had everything they were looking for... "She fit perfectly into the Miss Universe stereotype: sexy figure, exceptional stage presence, great audience support and impact, big hair, perfect teeth, and natural elegance.

Zora didn't mention if she had the chance to get close with Evelina. Basta all she told me is that maganda daw talaga si Evelina in person more than in pictures. Wala daw sinabi yung mga pics niya sa MU official website compared sa itsura niya in person. Saka Zora said Evelina was prettier whenever she smiled with her mouth closed. It added more and more mystery to her personality.

Thanks for the clarification regaring Ruffa going to Greece.

Hindi lang si Areeya Chumsai ang against sa National Costume victory ni Charlene. Pati si Miss Egypt Ghada El-Salem ay hindi sang-ayon doon. She was interviewed by ABS-CBN's Star News and said, "...they should have given others a chance." As I've noticed myself, malaki ang attitude problem ni Miss Egypt. When Sushmita won, she was seen in the background NOT CLAPPING AT ALL. It's like she was showing everyone na she was very very bored na. She was obviosuly unhappy with the judges' final decision... but does she really have to show her immaturity to millions of viewers?

Regarding Areeya naman, she was Charlene's roommate at the Manila Hotel. Medyo nagka-"friction" nga sila after Charlene won Best National Costume.

YES, beauty pageants are very, very popular in our country. In fact, I can't think of any other Asian country na mahihigitan pa ang excitement at fondness natin for beauty pageants.

Here are the proofs that pageants are very popular in our country:

1. We have lots of annual beauty pageants. We have 3 important local pageants alone. These are the:

a. Binibining Pilipinas Beauty Pageant- It selects the country's yearly representatives to MU, MW and MI.
b. Miss Philippines Beauty Pageant- It selects the country's representative to Miss Earth, held in our very own country.
c. Mutya Ng Pilipinas Pageant- It selects the country's yearly representative to the Miss Asia Pacific Quest, again held in our very own country.

2. Two of the most important beauty pageants in the world were started in the Philippines and were conceptualized and owned by Filipinos. These are the Miss Earth and Miss Asia Pacific pageants.

These two main reasons are above are enough to affirm our love for pageants. We just love celebrating femininity and beauty. :)

How would I rate Bb? I'd give it a score of 5 out of a perfect 10 because, like what you said, it greatly needs a LOT of catching up to do in order to be at par once again with the rest. They have committed a lot of mistakes in the past and these mistakes would be useless if they didn't learn anything at all from them.

1.The pageant date must be reset... dapat at least 6 months man lang before the Bb. Pilipinas Universe winner competes. (just like what was done for Charlene) BPCI must prioritize it over those Disney-On-Ice Shows.

2. Pageant wardrobe must be all FILIPINO. Our girls are representing the Philippines, not Colombia.

3. BPCI Management must be open to external intervention whenever necessary. Newer ideas must regularly be sought.

I think with these 3 suggestions, we can survive again.

It's a bit of an irony na we are a pageant crazy country but we sure stink in it. What I meant was, if pageants are sooo popular here, a lot of "beautiful" girls who have potential talaga think joinning Bb is really baduy. Like you said at the other thread you asked a lot of your female friends but they just shrug with disgust. Pageants here are really popular but not that glamorous. Kaya our girls who have real potential hesitate to join.

To make it short nga, mababa tingin ng tao when it comes to beauty pageants. Well except for our girls who go to Miss Universe- yung mga may "k" lang like, Charlene, Abbygale, Mirriam, Nina, and Zora- these girls I think stick in the minds of ordinary people. The others nakalimutan na ng tao, except for pageant fans like us. Sa Miss World naman, I have no recollection whatsoever kung sino ang mga reps natin dun. I only remember those from the recent years lang and by face pa not by name. Except for Ruffa and Cara S. Paano pa kaya yung mga ordinaryong tao? Miss South Africa, Monica Fairall, was told by pageant officials not to wear her psychedelic evening gown. The audience at the evening-gown preliminary judging gasped and gave a chorus of wolf whistles, cheers and applause after Monica walked to the end of the runway and then turned, revealing that the back of her sequin-covered gown was "cut as far below the waist as the law allows, even lower than her backless bathing suit."

This resembles the back of the gown of Miss Spain 1999 Diana Nogueira's. :D

Arlene Peterkin is a member of the cabin crew of BWIA Trinidad & Tobago Airways. She has a lovely baby daughter named Mia.

During MU95, she ranked 4th overall in the prelims with a 9.313. During the semi-final round, she got a 9.49 in the Interview competition which ranked 7th. During the Jantzen Swimsuit competition, she got a 9.51 which ranked 6th. And finally she got a 9.67 for her evening gown, again ranking 6th. She advanced to the Final 6 but failed to advance into the Top 3 because she got a 9.70. Miss India Manpreet Brar beat her for the 3rd spot by a hundredth of a point. Manpreet got a 9.71.

Here is my tribute to 2 of TNT's most beautiful women in the 90's- Margot and Wendy:

kada,
sorry there is no link about MU94. I have a copy of MU94, clear copy from the US but I don't know paano magrecord ng vhs to vhs.

could somebody help me, it says in the Femina Miss India Website:

Be part of the excitement at the Grand Final at Fa Femina Miss India 2002 ...Meet the contestants...Watch them being put through their paces...and see the coronation of this year's Fa Femina Miss India.

View the exclusive webcast of the Fa Femina Miss India 2002 tonight, 11:30 pm (IST) onwards.

But in the SET India sched, they would start showing the finals at 9 pm Indian time. If my calculations serves me correctly we are ahead of India by 2 1/2 hours. So it means 11:30 India 1 am dito? So delayed ang webcast?

What happened to my bet Miss Maracas Valley Jamille Selvon? She would have been the perfect Trinidadian delegate to MU because she resembles Verna Vazquez and her interview in the website was exceptional... what a waste... :(

Hi Apostle! :)

Unfortunately, I don't know any website where I can find pictures of Dindi Gallardo in action in MU93. Basta all I remember is her national costume was predominantly white, and was accessorized with pearls and capiz shells. I could not say if it was Muslim-inspired or what. During the Parade of Nations when the MU93 delegates were singing the opening song Viva La Noche, Dindi could be seen in front. She was stunning that night.

When she stepped up to introduce herself, here is what I remembered she said: Magandang gabi! I'm Dindi Gallardo from the 7,107 islands of the PHILIPPINES! There was a thunderous applause given the fairly-huge Filipino audience at the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City. It was the 3rd time that MU was held in Mexico, proving it to be MU's most favorite venue outside the US. Reports everywhere have it that MU2003 will be staged in Cancun, Mexico. However, there is no concrete confirmation yet.

Anyway, back to Dindi, she ranked terribly LOW in the preliminaries. She ranked 22nd overall and was tied with Miss Norway Ine Beate Strand. Her average was 8.643. I also could not find a website where her exact prelim scores are shown. :)

Jensie, i stumbled this piece in Mabuhay. Have you any knowledge of this?

A REDEFINED BB. PILIPINAS:
More Updates from www.mabuhaybeauties.com Pool of Insiders
by "J"

1. Bb. Pilipinas 2001 Zorayda Ruth Andam will co-host the 2002 Mr. Philippines World Pageant with German Moreno in GMA-7's Master Showman Presents on February 9, 2002.

2. BPCI Chairperson Madame Stella Marquez de Araneta, according to our BPCI Insider is determined to finally select a winner who can figure prominently in the top 10 of this year's Mr. World Search. A special group has been assigned specifically to handpick male counterparts of Zorayda Andam, Miriam Quiambao and Nina Alagao: bright, sensible guys with winning personalities and oozing with sex appeal.

3. BPCI staffers had been strongly encouraged to recruit quality candidates from the best schools in the country: St. Louis in Baguio, Holy Angel University and CLSU in Central Luzon, UP/UST/Ateneo/La Salle in Metro Manila, UPLB and La Salle Dasma in Southern Luzon, Nueva Caceres and Ateneo de Naga in Bicolandia, San Carlos/Silliman/La Salle Bacolod/UP in the Visayas, as well as Ateneo de Zamboanga/MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology/Xavier University/UP Mindanao/Ateneo de Davao in Mindanao.

Expect the final list of official candidates for both Mr. Philippines World as well as Bb. Pilipinas to come mostly from these schools.

4. Madame Stella has specifically instructed BPCI Executive Committee members and staffers to OFFICIALLY scratch off their lists applicants with questionable (READ: SLEAZY) backgrounds. While BPCI does not expect immaculately-conceived candidates to come out this year, BPCI is now leaning towards winners who can win international titles and be good role models for young Filipinos and Filipinas to emulate.

Obviously it has come to BPCI's knowledge that certain Filipinas who emerged from a rival beauty contest (NOT BB. PILIPINAS) placed in the top 5 of their respective "international" (READ: SMALL TIME) pageants for the past few years under very mysterious circumstances.

5. Mrs. Araneta wants to bring back the respectability of pageant winners during the 1950s to early 1970s (Think Bessie Buencamino, Chuchay Tuazon, Edith Nakpil, Gloria and Margie). She has specifically recruited new, young and dynamic BPCI team members and consultants to revitalize BPCI's pageants.

6. There is strong pressure for BPCI to replace Ruffa Gutierrez this year as host or as anchor. Advertising agencies and potential pageant sponsors have expressed preference to have Nina Ricci Alagao and Zorayda Andam as local counterparts of Ali Landry and Julie Moran. Certain pageant watchers feel that the Nina-Zora tandem will churn out excellent dish and backstage stories. (We'd love to see and hear Nina and Zora---two of our most articulate and personable Binibinis as Philippine pageantry's DISH QUEENS, as Carson Daly would put it).

If Paolo Bediones has ceased ties with Rejoice, he may be asked to emcee this year's pageant (Hooray! No Davids and Dingdongs this year!).

7. BPCI is strongly considering the public exposition of judges' scores on the TV screen a la Miss Universe, 2001 Mutya and Miss Asia-Pacific for the interview, swimsuit and evening gown competitions for the Bb. Pilipinas Pageant.

8. During a recent meeting that involved "annointed" BPCI members, this year's Bb. Pilipinas may also have one panel for both preliminary and final judging. If they will really institute this, BPCI is doing the country a great service. This was the usual practice when Lalaine Benette, Clarinda Soriano, Louise Veil Aurelio, Gloria Diaz, Aurora Pijuan, Armi Barbara Crespo, Margie Moran, Guada Sanchez, Chiqui Brosas, Dorothy Sue Bradley, Melanie Marquez, Chat Silayan, Desiree Verdadero, Izza Gonzales and Geraldine Asis----years when we figured prominently in the international pageant scene.

While the judging panel may have token representations from sponsors, diplomats and friends of the Aranetas, there is a strong sentiment from the young TURKS of the BPCI to allow EXPERTS to comprise the majority.

If BPCI were to follow this, we expect fashion designers, models, fashion icons, international pageant winners and watchers to fill up the judging panel. Just like in the Miss Venezuela Pageant (Until Osmel Souza's magic waned a bit recently), the judging panel is composed of not 7 not 8 not 10 but 25 to 50 members! We know that this is not logistically possible. So why not put 12-15 judges instead? 3 from the friends of the Aranetas/diplomats group; 3 from the sponsors group (we cannot get rid of this, they foot the bill); 3 designers or fashion experts (think 3 generations: Joe Salazar, Inno Sotto, Joji Lloren or beauty experts such as the make-up artists from PROPAGANDA in Greenbelt Mall like former Supermodel Lala Flores and her bosses or choreographer Ariel Lozada), 3 models/former titleholders (Melanie Marquez, Izza Gonzalez, Abbygale Arenas) and style icons (actress Angel Aquino, entrepreneur Tina Maristela, Mega Magazine's Top Ramp Model of the Year Joanne Bitagcol, actor Eddie Garcia, former government officials Rafael Alunan and Antonio Gonzalez of Mondragon fame). Bongga, don't you think?

9. What BPCI doesnt know: The same GMA-7 creative, technical and production teams responsible for the success of the 2001 Mutya and Miss Asia Pacific pageants have been asked to work on this year's 2002 Bb. Pilipinas Pageant.(Hooray for this one too! 2001 Mutya made it to the finals of the New York University-sponsored International Festival of Film and Television under the Specials Category over hundreds of nominees worldwide. Bb. Pilipinas production this year should be BETTER!)

10. Topnotch choreographer Christine Blando ---who did excellent work during the 1999 (remember the ballroom scenes during the evening gown competition), 2000 (take note of the movement during the futuristic opening number, the slowed down Bb Pilipinas theme and the evening gown competition descending the steps) and 2001 Bb. pageants (the movement during the fast-paced Bb. Pilipinas theme as well as Imee Su Martinez's a la Chat Silayan presentation during the evening gown competition together with the fabulous 2001 Mutya productions numbers with trapeze artists in the background---these were all choreographed by Ms. Blando)--- have been tapped to do the same in 2002. Christine Blando used to be Douglas Nierras' star dancer-choreographer in Hotlegs and later, Powerdance.

11. Some pageant watchers may not approve of the dance movements during the evening gown competitions (sometimes they distract the viewers) . However, this is one ultimate test of a candidate's gracefulness and queenly bearing as they cross the stage (Think Miriam's raw but imposing presence during the 1999 Bb. finals or Nina's formidable grace and movement).

12. BPCI is still deliberating whether or not to make Bb. Pilipinas Tourism as an official title together with the traditional top 3 (Universe, World, International). A prominent fashonista thinks that this should be the case. After all, regardless of Miss Tourism varieties and possibilities: phylum Macau, phylum Malaysia, phylum Turkey or phylum Colombia, Bb. Pilipinas Tourism can always work with the Department of Tourism for a year the way Emma Yuhico did it marvelously when she was a Mutya. Sheila Dizon was an excellent Bb. Pilipinas Tourism since she graced the Philippine Day of several of our embassies abroad)

We may see the end of mediocrity in the local pageant scene. We can only hope for the best. Break a leg Bb. Pilipinas 2002! - "J" of the Mabuhay Pool of Insiders

As early as December, I was already informed of the details and plans regarding the Mr. Philippines-World 2002 pageant. The rest of the information that you posted are "new". I got hold of them only yesterday.

Regarding naman Bb. Pilipinas 2002, screenings and applications are still ongoing at the Bb. Pilipinas Boutique. Hundreds of aspirants have already filed their applications since the first week of the month. The final screening will take place most likely between the last week of the month up to the first week of February. From about 150 aspirants, only 60 will be selected. This number will further be narrowed down to only 30 and these ladies will be this year's official candidates. The BPCI official website will not be updated until mid-February when their number tag assignments have been finalized.

Hi Lara! :)

Yes, I also believe she stands 5'7", I only posted 5'6" because I based it from the official Femina Miss India website. I've visited a lot of websites featuring her and they all affirmed her height was indeed 5'7".

Yes I agree! For all we know, Russia might surprise us all again in MU2002. :)

Did you know that there was a scandal brewing up involving Oksana?

Oksana Fyodorova has been elected “First Beauty of Russia” under pressure from the presidential administration. Such a scandalous news appeared lately in some Western media outlets. For example, "Sunday Times" and "Daily Telegraph" lashed out on Russia’s president in this connection. Apart from standard accusations of unleashing a “bloody war” in Chechnya and suppressing television networks, Russian President Vladimir Putin is now accused of influencing the results of the “Miss Russia 2002” contest.

Western newsmakers assert that Oksana and Vladimir first met in 1999, and since then Mr. Putin has been a secret admirer of a beautiful girl from Petersburg.

Oksana is currently a post-graduate student of the Police Academy, working on her Ph.D. thesis. So, there is no wonder that Oksana has won. And she did it quite rightfully.

Oksana was the very first MU2002 delegate to be crowned on her local pageant. She was crowned on April 16, 2001, Monday. The reigning Miss Russia Oxsana Kalandyrets has yet to fly to Bayamon for MU2001, where she placed 9th overall.

PAGEANTS FOR FEBRUARY 2002:

1.Sorry, I stand corrected. The Miss Nicaragua pageant has been moved this year. There has been no official reason for this. It will take place on March 2, Saturday. The winner will go only to MU2002. Ligia Arguello was crowned on February 4 last year.

A separate pageant will be held to select the Nicaraguan MW2002 delegate. The Miss Mundo Nicaragua 2002 pageant will take place on February 27, Wednesday.

The URL: http://www.missnicaragua.com/02Nica_Main.htm

2. The Miss Universe Argentina pageant traditionally takes place during the month of February. Last year, it took place on February 25. As of press time, there is no specific date or plan yet. We are not even sure if Argentina will send a delegate to MU2002 this year, given its worse crisis in years. I will do a thorough research on this tomorrow.

3. I can't find a date for Miss Verano Chile 2002 yet. Last year it took place on February 13. This is a new pageant organized by Miss Mundo Chile '98 Daniela Campos, who was a MW98 semi-finalist. The winner of this pageant represents Chile in MU.

4. Miss Suomi 2002 will take place on February 17, Sunday. The winner of this pageant represents Finland in MU.

The URL: http://www.misssuomi.fi/etusivu.html

5. Miss Costa Rica 2002 is on February 9, Saturday.

Jensie, so it means Miss Chile World 2001 won't be representing Chile sa Miss U? Believe ako sayo Jensie!!! Resourceful!!! I'm also afraid that Argentina might not be able to send a delegate this year because of their economic slump. mas grabe pa nga sila kaysa satin eh. But if they would just send a delegate nalang no coronation night... like their reps from the Miss World. Sana...

Miss Chile World 2001 Christianne Balmelli Fournier will NOT be representing Chile in MU2002.

A new organization called Una Reina Para El Mundo holds a separate pageant to select Miss Mundo Chile. Christianne won that organization's 1st ever pageant on September 25 last year. The Chilean MW franchise is now owned by Daniela Campos, Ms. Mundo Chile '98 and MW98 semi-finalist. It is co-owned by Millaray Palma.

The Miss Verano Chile (Miss Summer Chile) now selects Chile's MU representative. Daniela Campos also owns the Chilean MU franchise. The pageant began only last year, with Carolina Gamez Gallardo emerging as the winner. Carolina was crowned on February 13, 2001.

But if they would just send a delegate nalang no coronation night... like their reps from the Miss World. Sana...

Thanks! :)

Yup I agree!

If Argentina couldn't come up with a pageant to select their representative for MU2002, they might as well send Virginia Di Salvo. She represented her country in MW2001. She's 22 and stands 5'9".

Just a wild thought: Virginia Di Salvo might just be the lucky lady that Argentina has long been waiting for. The last Argentine woman to make it to the MU semi-finals was Virginia Alvarez in 1979. Same names pa sila! :)

http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant/pageant_image2.jpg

What went wrong for this Guaynaban charmer and wasn't called in the MU2000 Top 10? Reports have it that her thunder thighs did not give her justice during the preliminary swmisuit competition. To make matters worse, her poor, poor choice of evening gown sealed her fate, automatically ending the hope of what could have been Puerto Rico's 4th MU crown. Fortunately for this island nation, it had to wait for one more year before it could actually achieve this feat.

Miss Universe Flashback

- Our very own Geraldine Edith "Pebbles" Asis competing in Miss Universe 1987 held at the Megatrade & Exhibit Hall of the Singapore World Trade Center, Singapore on May 27, 1987.

Parade of Nations
- Unknown to many, Pebbles ranked 5th overall in the MU87 prelims. Her average was 8.132.

To the tune of Let's Go by Wang Chung, Pebbles introduces herself in her national costume which is very reminiscent to that of Zora 14 years later.
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant2/pageant2_image3.jpg

Interview
- This was Bob Barker’s last year as host. He resigned the following year, in protest of the awarding of fur coats as prizes at Miss Universe and Miss USA.

Pebbles earned an 8.231 and ranked 6th.
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant4/pageant4_image1.jpg http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant4/pageant4_image2.jpg

Swimsuit
- Pebbles on her Catalina Swimsuit. She earned an 8.603, ranking 6th again.
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant4/pageant4_image3.jpg http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant5/pageant5_image1.jpg

CONTINUATION…

Production Number
- Pebbles, together with the rest of the MU candidates, singing Everybody Have Fun Tonight by Wang Chung at the special number segment shortly before the evening gown competition.
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant2/pageant2_image2.jpg

Evening Gown
- Pebbles in this spectacular Louie Mamengo creation. Incidentally, she was wearing the very same gown when she was crowned Bb. Pilipinas Universe. This gown was responsible for her Best in Long Gown winning in Bb. Pilipinas. Notice how her gown blends with the stage presentation. Very Oriental indeed!

She earned an 8.915 here. She ranked 4th, beating top favorites Miss Puerto Rico Laurie Simpson and Miss Venezuela Ines Rodriguez in this competition.
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant5/pageant5_image2.jpg http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant5/pageant5_image3.jpg http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant6/pageant6_image1.jpg

Unfortunately, when all of these scores are averaged, she gets an 8.583. She was narrowly beaten for the 5th spot by Miss Venezuela, who got an 8.632. She could have been our 3rd Miss Universe back then, to think the pageant was held in Asia. However, Chile's Cecilia Bolocco was very impressive that year.

Nevertheless, thanks to Pebbles for putting on a good fight and a good show as well. We hope to see more of our girls like her in MU soon. :)

Pebbles Asis is such a winner!!!! I think it was the first time I watched a beauty pageant, to answer Jensie's question. After that, I also remembered watching Lorna Legaspi win in Miss Asia-Pacific and the 1988 almost all-Asian Miss U finals. I've been hooked since then.

And yes, THUNDER THIGHS si Miss P.R. 2000. and yes, poor choice of long gown. if that were red, mas ok siguro. mala catherine zeta jones in entrapment.

Question: Sino sa tingin niyo ang pinaka-undeserving na Miss U? or kahit finalist/semi-finalist? Who should have been in her/their place(s)? [hehehe, mala survivor jury question to ah]

Ah really? Me too, MU94 had a big impact on me. :)

Ako naman, the very 1st pageant I watched was MU89. Betamax pa siya nun. After nun, I was addicted na to every pageant I see on TV. It was only in 1992, when I seriously made tutok to pageants like MU. Tapos Ruffa's victory in MW93 inspired me more and more. It was the 1st ever pageant I watched wherein a Ms. Philippines made it to the top 10 and won 2nd RU.

Nung MU94 naman, I bought tons of pics from Fujifilm. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to watch the pageant live at the PICC. :)

Hi! :)

Here's my list of girls whom I personally think did NOT DESERVE to be in the MU top 10.

2001- Russia- with her flabs and lousy gown, pang-Miss Europe lang siya.
2000- South Africa, Zimbabwe, France- replace w/ Philippines, Germany, and Costa Rica.
1999- Jamaica, India- lousy evening gown for Nicole Haughton and Gul! My gosh, her figure wasn't pageant material at all. She only got in coz of her good interview and coz she was Miss India. Had she worn another sash, she wouldn't have made it.
1998- Ireland- lousy
1997- Estonia, India- Abbygale and Miss Colombia should have been in the top 10.
1996- Sweden- very, very lousy and dull
1995- NONE. All of them deserved to be in the top10. Chelsi deserved to win even though she struggled to be politically-correct throughout the coronation night.
1994- Switzerland, Sweden- bring in Australia and Brazil

Guys, these are all my opinions ha. :)

Same here, my first MU was way back in 1989 but I have no memory of it na kasi I was just 9 back then. From 1989 to 1993 I just watch MU on tv, i wasn't hooked on it back then. I just watch it for the fun of it lang. Then kapag tapos na back to normal na, like nothing has happened.

to answer Chez-o's question: for me the most undeserving Miss Universe in recent memory is Chelsea Smith- I think in the 90's she was the most boring Miss Universe. After she gave away her crown we haven't heard anything from her. Agree? Even most Miss Universe from the 80's we still hear some news about them now. Sana nanalo nung 1995 was Miss Trinidad & Tobago.

Sa semi-finalist naman na undeserving- Miss Jamaica 1999, Miss South Africa 2000, Miss Russia 2001, Miss South Africa 1998 (I find her face irritating i dunno why... hehehe), Miss Russia 1998, Miss Peru 1996, and Miss Trinidad & Tobago 1997 (dapat she wasn't among the top 3, I would replace her with either Miss Italy or Miss Curacao).

My favorite for Miss Norway:

Hi Lara!

Clash pala tayo ng opinions regarding Chelsi Smith. I dunno what I saw in her back then. When she won Miss USA 1995, parang I had a gut feeling na she would win MU din. Pero I also think Arlene Peterkin should have been in the top 3.

Ang napahiya talaga ako tungkol sa opinion ko about Brooke Lee back then. Sabi ko, she'll be the first Miss USA I'll ever watch not to make it to the top 10 in MU. Pero laking hiya ko when she did and even won MU... :) I really dreamed of Denny Mendez winning MU97 back then...

Nung 1999 naman nakakainis. I correctly predicted 9 out of the 10 semi-finalists. Nagkamali lang ako ng isa coz I included Kim Pressler on my list. Siya lang ang wala sa list ko. I was expecting her to make it coz her swimsuit was stunning and of course coz she was Ms. USA.

In response to your question, I read from somewhere that MU96 did not push through in South Africa simply because MU95 (which was held in its neighbor Namibia) suffered poor ratings after its May 12 broadcast. MUI had to find a more appealing venue in order to regain its good rating over the years.

As a consequence of this event, MUI had to immediately find a replacement and it eventually ended up in Las Vegas, Nevada. MUI repotedly did not think twice when it chose Las Vegas since it has also hosted MU back in 1991.

Di ko pa pala nasasagot ang question ko:
For me the most beautiful Miss UNiverse when she gave up her crown is no other than:

1. Sushmita Sen- everybody I think was expecting Lara to do the same, wearing a traditional Indian sari. But to my disappointment hindi. Though Lara was beautiful during her final walk, she was soooo plain. Sushmita was really regal... very queenly ang dating. Saka yung farewell speach niya may dating talaga and straight from the heart.

2. Michelle Mclean- maganda lang talaga siya nung final walk niya.
3. Wendy Fitzwilliam- maganda rin saka unique farewell walk niya.

MOST WINNINGEST FROM THEIR RESPECTIVE REGION / CONTINENTS:

MU

NORTH AMERICA: USA with 7 winners
SOUTH AMERICA: VENEZUELA with 4 winners
CARIBBEAN: PUERTO RICO with 4 winners
ASIA: INDIA, the PHILIPPINES and THAILAND: all with 2 winners each
EUROPE: SWEDEN with 3 winners.

MW

NORTH AMERICA: USA with 2 winners (technically)
SOUTH AMERICA: VENEZUELA with 5 winners
CARIBBEAN: JAMAICA with 3 winners
ASIA: INDIA with 5 winners
EUROPE: UNITED KINGDOM with 4 winners
AUSTRALIA / OCEANIA: AUSTRALIA with 2 winners

Some Notes:
-Notice the consistency of USA, Venezuela and India in topping their respective continent’s list.
-While Jamaica has won thrice ( 1963, 1976, 1993) in MW, it has made it to the MU semi-finals only thrice. (1989. 1991, 1999)
-No country has ever won back-to-back in MU.
-In MW, England has won back-to-back in 1964 and 1965. India achieved the same feat in 1999 and 2000.
-While USA has won in UK-owned MW pageant, the United Kingdom (England, Scotland and Wales) has never won in US-owned MU pageant.
-The greatest number of delegates in MU ever was 84 in 1984 and 1999.
-The greatest number of delegates in MW ever was 94 both in 1999 and 2000. (Global Beauties figures)

In MW99, it was reported lang na 99 delegates were scheduled to show up. But come finals night, only 94 were present. I should've included 1999 in my trivia portion pala.

I am not aware of such an "unwritten rule". I believe it's more of a curse. No country would ever win back-to-back in MU. The best that her successor could do the next year is settle for 1st RU. (Like Manpreet and Marena in recent times)

NOTE: When I say "semi-finals", I mean either the Top 10 (from 1952, 1984-2001), the Top 12 (from 1970-1983), or the Top 15 (from 1953-1969). As we all know, MU has evolved through its 50 years of existence.

Greatest number of Asians in the semi-finals:

NOTE: Egypt, Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon, Turkey are the only Middle Eastern countries currently participating in MU. (Iraq once participated in MU72) The Middle East is a region WITHIN the Asian continent per se, which is why I'm rightfully counting Cyprus, Turkey, Israel and Lebanon as Asian countries. Egypt, on the other hand, has long been considered a Middle Eastern country but is located within the African continent per se, which is why it is counted as an African country of course.

I am explaining this in response to confusion over their (with the exception of Egypt) participation in Miss Europe. They simply participate in that pageant because of their healthy ties and proximity to the European continent. Another reason is that they are also culturally-European. This also indirectly explains why Russia is able to participate in Miss Asia Pacific.

MU73- (5) Japan, India, Israel, Lebanon, Philippines

Greatest number of South Americans in the semi-finals:
MU54- (5) Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Uruguay
MU58- (5) Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Suriname
MU64- (5) Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Venezuela

Greatest number of Europeans in the semi-finals:
MU67- (10) Denmark, England, Finland, Greece, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Sweden ,Wales

NOTE: When I say "finals", I mean either the Top 5 (from 1952-1989 and 1998-2001) or the Top 6 (from 1990-1997). As we all know, MU has evolved through its 50 years of existence.

Greatest number of Asians in the finals:
MU88- (4) Thailand, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong

Greatest number of South Americans in the finals:
MU90- (3) Bolivia, Chile, Venezuela

Greatest number of Europeans in the finals:
MU56- (4) England, Germany, Italy, Sweden

Greatest number of Africans in the finals:
MU99- (2) Botswana & South Africa

Most National Costume Award winners:

MEXICO-
Acapulco in 1979
Cancun in 1989
Mexico City in 1993

NOTE: There are lots of unconfirmed reports that Cancun is hosting MU2003. If ever this plan pushes through, Mexico will regain its #1 spot as MU's most favorite venue outside the U.S.

PUERTO RICO- I am already including MU2002, PR's 3rd MU hosting. It's now tied with Mexico.
Dorado in 1972
Bayamon in 2001
San Juan in 2002

Country with greatest number of Best in Swimsuit, Evening Gown and Interview winners:

para saken, ang mga best rections ay based sa genuine reaction, so wala akong pakialam kung nagkalat siya as long na feel ko na hindi lutong macao ang result na feeling overconfident.

best reaction sa top 10: sushmita sen (with matching sign of the cross) and ms. ghana 1999 (talagang GULAT ang lola!), tsaka usually ang pinakalast (the 10th girl to be called) kasi hopeless na, with the exception of denise quiñones na talagang all the way ang pagkaoverconfident.

best 1st ru reaction: carolina gomez

best winner reaction: susmita (with the iyak) and mpule (with the WIDE bunganga);

worst reaction: ruffa g. (in binibini, talagang laglag ang mukha)and minorka, halatang ayaw sa result

so-so reaction: denise, nasobrahan sa confidence, pati ako di na na-excite. naexcite na lang ako sa mga tao, for a moment, the whole puerto rico seemed to hold their breath.

best ending scene: 1994, parang fiesta at talagang punung-puno ang stage

best opening number: 1999, sobrang exciting yung air kahit nanunuod lang sa t.v.

best walk with little sister: sushmita sen

sobra namang wa-poise yung kay abbygale, pero at least talagang natuwa siya....

For me the best reaction when they heard they're in the top 10

The 2 dark African girls back in 1999- Miss Botswana and Miss Ghana. Miss Botswana was a classic!!! gulat na gulat!!! hehehe And si Sushmita din.

Yung worst reaction naman regarding kay Ruffa, it's understandable naman na sumimangot siya. I think the whole country frowned with her when she won Bb. Pilipinas-World. Everyone wants her to be in Miss Universe diba? She's more Miss U material naman eh. Agree? Kaya I think sobrang pahiya si Dindi- walang napala.

Lara_Ganda_ko: Yup you're right. Ruffa revealed in several interviews before that it has always been her dream to become MU. She was disappointed with the Bb. Pilipinas World title. Maybe we can't blame the judges din for selecting Dindi, for she was on her best ever form during Bb. Pilipinas. However, when she got to Mexico City, parang nawala bigla ang charm niya.

Final 5 Interview
Ruffa: If I become Miss World, I'd surely be the hap- piest person on earth. Surely, it will change me in many ways, but definitely my sentiments for my family, parents, friends, loved ones and all my fans in the Philippines will remain the same, thank you."

Vanessa Williams: "What would you tell a girl suffering from low self- esteem to feel good about herself?"

Ruffa: "I would tell her to believe in herself because it's not only physical beauty that is important but also inner beauty. Just like what the little prince said, 'The essential things are invisible to the naked eye.' Definitely, character and personality are more important than physical beauty."

Bb. Pilipinas 2002 Update

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The Bb. Pilipinas Executive Committee has EXTENDED the PRELIMINARY SCREENING and SUBMISSION OF ENTRIES for Bb. Pilipinas 2002 to Friday, February 22, 2002. This information has been relayed by the BPCI Secretariat.

For now a number of beauties have passed the preliminary screening first held in early December. From there these beauties are being asked to come back for the Final Screening to select the official candidates for the 2002 Bb. Pilipinas Pageant. The date of the final screening has not been decided as of press time. Sources are saying that it will most likely be held on February 23, 2002 (Saturday) at the Food Dome of Araneta Center in Cubao.

Daily screenings are still being held at the BPCI Offices located at the South Gate of the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao from 1-6 PM everyday.

***This information above has been lifted from the Mabuhay Pageants message board a while ago... However, my source told me earlier this evening na sa February 16 daw ang final screening.... ang bilis namang i-move kung ganon...

The Final Screening is when the 150 aspirants will be trimmed down to only 25-30 aspirants. They then become this year's official candidates.

The official Bb. Pilipinas website will be updated for the 2002 batch sometime on the last week of February when their official number tag assignments have been finalized.

I am not yet sure... most probably I will. I, myself, have persuaded 2 ladies in joining this year. May dalawang pending pa...they're still thinking about it. I will reveal their identities, profiles, and alma maters once they indeed show up at the Araneta Center to submit all the requirements. :) Mahirap kasi pag premature announcement eh... lalabas speculation lang. :)

Maraming bigatin at may laban (most especially for MU). I just don't know if all of them passed the December screenings. Most of the aspirants are fresh graduates, print models, teachers, office girls, and some are even balikbayans. Let's see if these balikbayans indeed completed their required 6-month residency in the country prior to March 2002.

Sorry I really wouldn't know the answers to your questions regarding Madame Stella de Araneta. However, I would also love to know. :) Once I get info on this matter, I will inform you ASAP.

A ok. Thanks very much Jensie. If you say madami talagang stunners sa first screening nung December (yung mga pang Miss U) ang boblaks naman nila kung binitawan nila yun. But magaling bang magsalita? Regarding your friends naman na medyo having 2nd thoughts pa.... pakitaan mo sila ng mga Miss U pics saka sabihin mo na you could be one of these girls!!! hehehe ok ba? Think big!!! hehehe The reason why the Indian girls are winning is because may drive sila, tayo.. hmmm... I guess wala... right? Di BADUY masama ka sa Miss Universe kaya!!! hehehe

p.s.
Di ba alam ni Zora placing niya sa Miss U? Saka correction sa Number of delegates sa 93, they were 79.

Thanks for the correction! :)

Anyway just to inform you, hindi alam ni Zora kung ano yung final rank niya sa MU2001. She didn't even bother asking for it na daw. I asked her before kasi eh. I even told her about what I read in Global Beauties saying na she ranked "27th" overall daw. Hindi naman siya mashado nag-react coz it really didn't matter to her that much.

Regarding my friends, don't worry I'm doing the best I can to encourage them more. I'm going to show them pics of MU and MW na rin para ma-inspire sila. You're very right in saying na may drive ang Indian girls at karamihan naman sa atin ay wala... very, very true... :(

Sabagay I can understand Zora kung bakit di na niya tinanong. Eh wala na tayo sa top 10 so why bother pa di ba? Saka feeling ko, madali naman manalo ang Bb. Pilipinas-UNiverse eh, well compared to the Indian girls. If she knows how to strut her stuff, dali na yan. Saka sabihin mo manood lang sila ng F Channel, panoorin nila yung mga models kung paano maglakad, ayos na... hehehe tama?

it's just simple. Bb. Pilipinas isn't really that competitive compared to Femina, madali makita yung stand out girl. Madali naman makita kung sino may "k" at wala. At madaming mga walang "k" na sumasali anyway. And if that standout girl has the right element, madali niya nang maconvince yung judges saka yung crowd. Konting witty answers lang you have the crown na eh, if you look there are sooo many girls who blew it during the Q&A. di ko makita yung mga pics. What's the website nalang?

Ah ok thanks! :)

You're right. There was this curse before na whoever wins the Best In Swimsuit award in Bb. Pilipinas will go to Miss Universe...as we all know, this award is traditionally given before the semi-finalists are announced. The Bb. Pilipinas Universe winner would not be known until after an hour or two. Napansin mo? Gem, Alu, Liza, Dindi, Charlene, Joanne, Aileen, Abbygale, Nina... all of them won that specific special award and all of them went to MU din...this "curse" was broken lang in 1998 when Collette won it but was sent to MI. The next year, Michelle Arcangel won it but settled for 1st runner-up lang...Tapos last year, Maricar won it but was only 2nd runner-up

The point it is... obvious nga who stands out among the rest in Bb. Pilipinas unlike in Femina na mahirap hulaan...

The search for Miss Jamaica Universe 2002, the price is $1M -an article:

$1 million cash for Miss Jamaica Universe 2002

The winner of this year's Miss Jamaica Universe pageant will receive $1m in, the organisers have announced. Pulse, organisers of the event, staged under licence from the Miss Universe Organization, is looking for contestants capable of bringing the Miss Universe title home to Jamaica in May and, according to Pulse CEO Kingsley Cooper, "no stone will be left unturned, no effort will be spared. It is high time Jamaica, the land of the world's most beautiful women, won the crown."

The Miss Universe title is up for grabs again this May when the reigning title holder, Denise Quinones August of Puerto Rico, will hand over the title to the new Miss Universe. Miss Jamaica Universe, former TVJ newscaster Zahra Burton, will do the honours locally when the new Miss Jamaica is chosen on March 24.

Miss Jamaica Universe will win a number of other gifts and prizes in addition to the $1m cash. She will also win the Miss Universe competition wardrobe and a trip to the international pageant. According to Pulse, Jamaican young ladies who are "beautiful in face and body, bright, articulate and possessed of a vivacious personality" are encouraged to enter. Entrants must be between the ages of 18-27, must never have been married or had children.

The Miss Universe Pageant is 51 years old this year. It is produced annually by The Trump Organisation and CBS television. Each year the pageant moves across the globe to exotic locations. In the last four years for example, the event has been held in Hawaii, Trinidad and Tobago, Cyprus and Puerto Rico.

The Miss Jamaica Universe Pageant is presented by Pulse and has been since 1989, and the agency feels that a concerted effort to win the international crown in 2002 might well be met with success given the measures now being put in place. Jamaica, Pulse says, can be optimistic therefore that the outstanding achievements of Jamaica's Miss Universe top 10 finalists Kimberly Mais, Sandra Foster and Nicole Haughton might actually be surpassed in 2002.

Sponsors of this year's event include CVM, the Jamaica Observer and Smiroff as well as other major consumer brands to be announced shortly.

It's quite funny mas ok kung manalo ng Miss Jamaica instead of Miss U. Kung di isya masama sa top 10 ok lang kasi may $1M ka naman eh. And to think mas mayaman ka kays sa Miss Universe winner.

I think the BB Pilipinas organizers should really have a very very STRICT screening of candidates. But as consolation to them, Jojo Acuin (the Nostrodamus of Asia) gave favorable predictions on the Philippines' performance on beauty pageants this year. My mom bought Horoscopes and Predictions 2002 magazine this year..and this is what Jojo Acuin has to say...

"Kung sa mga nakaraaang taon ay puro mga runners-up lamang ang nanalo sa ating mga beauty queens, at kung manalo man ay sa mga pipitsuging beauty pageants lamang....may katiyakang mananalo ang dalawang beauty queens mula sa Pilipinas sa malaking pandaigdigang beauty pageant."

Regarding the "girls" in Talk TV, Jensie said a few posts back that there's still NO official delegates for Bb. and I think those girls who were there were just the applicants. I remember Jensie also said that there are quite a number of stunners this year- well we have to see it pa. Let's wait and see on Feb 16 when they announce the final delegates for Bb. Pilipinas.

And about the predictions thingy naman, I'm rather skeptical about it. First we need to know what other predictions came true first.

TO ALL:

1. Who for you was the most beautiful Miss World during her final walk?
2. Who for you had the BEST REACTION when she was crowned Miss World?
3. Who for you had the BEST REACTION when she was called in the top 10 in Miss World?

MY ANSWERS:

For me, I think the most beautiful Miss World during her final walk is Priyanka Chopra. Her evening gown was a mess though... Malaki ang ipinagbago niya a year after she won the title. Pumayat siya at nag-bloom talaga siya, as proven by the picture below.
http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/mnt/html/webspecial/missworld2001/pix/more_19.jpg

For me again, Diana Hayden had the best reaction when she was crowned Miss World. I really love genuinely-shocked reactions.
http://beau_land3.hihome.com/M-WORLD/Mw51-now/97/result/india-05.jpg

Cara Subijano naman had the best reaction when she was called in the top 10 of Miss World 1994. She was called in the 1st spot kaya gulat na gulat talaga siya. :)

I won't mind if she wins Miss Universe:

MISS RUSSIA DETERMINED TO WIN MISS UNIVERSE

Oksana Fyodorova (24), pictured, Miss Russia 2001, was unable to take part in the Miss Universe pageant last year because she had to pass examinations at the Interior Ministry training school. Both her runner-ups, Oxana Kalandyrets and Tatiana Pavlova, did amazingly well in the Miss Universe and Miss International contests.

But the gorgeous 5'10" police lieutenant from St. Petersburg, has not given up to the idea of attending Miss Universe. She commented that "if the vice Miss Russia (Kalandyrets) was a semifinalist, then Miss Russia should win (next year)". If her plans go as expected, she will be present in the island of Puerto Rico in may.

Lately, a beauty pageant is practically a synonym for controversy. Some newspapers published that Fyodorova had won because of pressure from the presidential administration. President Vladimir Putin was accused of influencing the contest's results, because of his admiration to Fyodorova.

Western newsmakers asserted that Oksana and Vladimir first met in 1999, and since then Mr. Putin has been a secret admirer of a beautiful girl from Petersburg. A very upset Miss Russia denied the allegations, stating that she had been indeed an admirer of the President, but that she did not know him.

She is currently a post-graduate student of the Police Academy, working on her Ph.D. thesis. So, there is no wonder that she won. And she did it quite rightfully

1969 - Ms. Philippines (Gloria Diaz)

Q. In the next day or so, a man will land on the moon. If a man from the moon landed in your hometown, what would you do to entertain him?

A. Oh, ah, it’s the same thing I’ll do. I think if he’s been in the moon for so long, when he comes over, he wants to change, I guess.

1973 - Ms. Philippines (Margarita Moran)

Q. Let’s make believe that all of a sudden (this is a perfect question for her) you have a million dollars, what is the first thing you would buy and why would you buy?

A. A house and lot. Because it is the most expensive thing and I can’t afford it. If I have a million bucks, I’ll buy a house and lot and live by myself and other people, of course.

1983 - Ms. New Zealand (Lorraine Downes)

Q. Miss New Zealand, many Americans are curious about your country, why don’t you does tell us about New Zealand.

A. Well, New Zealand is a beautiful country, it’s a very natural green country. And if you like easy outdoor life, then you like New Zealand.

Q. And at home there in New Zealand, have you watched Miss Universe in CBS?

A. Well, I’ve been watching Miss Universe pageant since I was about 8 years old and I can’t believe I am here now in it.

Q. Miss New Zealand, have you enjoyed your visit to St. Louis?

A. Well, it’s been wonderful. It’s one thing never to forget. And the best thing of my visit has been the people here in St. Louis. They’ve been so friendly and they made even one feel so welcome.

1984 - Ms. Sweden (Yvonne Ryding)

Q. Should you be the new Miss Universe, you will become a symbol to young women and girls all over the world, what would you like to tell them?

A. Yes, I think I wanted to tell them that have their own personality, always try to stand on both feet on the floor, and try to..., well, I think that’s the most important, always stand on both feet on the floor, and try to do other people happy and ... help.

1985 - Ms. Puerto Rico (Deborah Carthy-Deu)

Q. From your friends at home and your sisters contestants here at the pageant, you have an idea of what today’s young women want to say to the world. What message as Miss Universe would you want to give on their behalf?

A. I would like to tell everybody that they should really work hard, to try to achieve everything that they want to pursue and that always be very faithful and keep on working.

1987 - Ms. Chile (Cecilia Bolocco)

Q. What do you intend to do now that you have finished your study?

A. I would like to carry on now with my fashion designing. I would like to carry on with ballet dancing... classical ballet... and maybe marry and have a family.

Q. You’re going to be very busy?

A. I will take everything one at a time.

Q. Now, are you going to design clothing with your own line or are you going to work in a manufacturing?

A. I am going to do my own line because I have many original ideas. I don’t want to work in a company because they may change them.

Q. You are going wind up the interview with a commercial for your own line. You have to do it in English.

A. OK, next Christmas, ask Santa Claus to send you.. to give you a feather design by me.

1988 - Miss Thailand (Porntip Nakhirunkanok)

Q. How did you get to be Miss Thailand from Pasadena?

A. Well, you don’t have to live in Thailand to be a Thai person. I hope I’ve set a good example for the Thai people in my country for I am a Thai person and yes, I did grew up in Los Angeles, but I am a Thai person throughout. And I live a Thai culture, and I speak the Thai language and I just want everyone to know that I am proud to be a Thai woman.

Q. Who first thought you your English?

A. My English? Well, English is loudly spoken at home, also Thai is loudly spoken at home so I kept my language. So I think I owe it to Big Bird. I watched Sesame Street a lot when I was a little girl.

Q. Now, I know that you have a charity project for Thai children that you work on it.

A. Yes, unfortunately Thailand is not only a beautiful country that rich in culture and tradition, but it has a problem too on our children. In fact, 10,000 of our children died last year of malnutrition, and I am hoping that as Miss Thailand I can make a difference for these children.

1989 - Ms. Holland (Angela Visser)

Q. If you have to describe the French and Dutch people, how would you characterize them?

A. Well, the Dutch people in comparing, for example, to the Mexican people, are a little bit more moderate. It doesn’t mean that they are not nice people, but I see here in a lot of Mexican, they have such a lot of temperament. Maybe inside the Dutch people have it too, but we kept it a little bit hidden. If I have to say more about it…. I love to live in Holland. We are a very peaceful country. We are a very peaceful people and I’ve been borne and raised there, and I love it.

Q. About the other candidates here, who would you say has the most different upbringing other than yourself?

A. Well, my childhood was very lucky. I have a great family. I love my parents and my brother, and I think what I’ve noticed about all these girls is that they are very lucky inside. And we discussed about different kinds of families they came from, and I would say maybe it’s Ms. Nigeria. I had a conversation with her in the bus and I was really like amazed because for example, she has to be home at 7:00 in the evening and we started dinner in Holland then, you know, so if you talk about those things that are completely different, so she’s happy the way she is raised and I think we all are.

1990 - Ms. Norway (Mona Grudt)

Q. If you are a judge tonight, who would you vote to be the new Miss Universe, and why?

A. I think it will be very difficult to answer that, but I think it’s Miss Finland. Because she is always in a good mood, and always kind to everybody and sharing somebody open arms when they are down.

1991 - Ms. Mexico (Lupita Jones)

Q. What is the most difficult problem facing your country today, and what do you think should be done about it?

A. Well, I think the most recently thing we have in the hands is the free trade we are working on it. I think it will be hard for my country because we have to compete with a very advanced technology from other countries that are richer than we are. But I know we gonna make it. I know we are a big country and our people are great, so I feel hope with my people.

1992 - Ms. Namibia (Michelle McLean)

Q. If you became leader of your country tomorrow, what is the first thing you would do?

A. I would speak to the children, tell them that I am there for them. Because they are the foundation of our every nations, and I like them to know that I am there for them.

1993 - Ms. Puerto Rico (Dayanara Torres)

Q. If you were to become Miss Universe, what is the single most important thing you would want to accomplish?

A. I think that we will have to work basing ourselves on our past to working hard in the present to provide for a better future. I believe that we should turn our energies to the children of the world to provide for them a better future because that is where our future lies.

1994 - Ms. India (Sushmita Sen)

Q. What for you is the essence of being a woman?

A. I think they know woman by itself the very fact that you’re a woman is a gift from God, which all of us must appreciate. The origin of a child is a mother, and is a woman. And a woman is one who shares love and who shares and shows the man what love, caring and sharing is all about. That is the essence of being a woman.

1995 - Ms. USA (Chelsi Smith)

Q. If you have a power to do anything you wish to improve the status of women in your country, what would you do?

A. Well, actually I think they’ve come a long way so far. I do wish that people will look at women as just the same as they look men, that is equally in power. I know a lot of women can do anything that they choose and I am one of those women, and there are 80 of those women that are here today. So I think women are doing very well, but I like people to treat them as they should.

1996 - Ms. Venezuela (Alicia Machado)

Q. What do you think men can learn from women?

A. I believe that they can learn very much because thanks to most women, men are here in this beautiful theater seeing this beautiful contest, and applauding me because I am a beautiful woman.

1997 - Ms. USA (Brook Lee)

Q. If there were no rules in your life for one day, and you could be outrageous, what would you do?

A. I would eat everything in the world. You do not understand. I would eat everything twice.

1998 - Ms. Trinidad & Tobago (Wendy Fitzwilliam)

Q. A woman had just awakened after being asleep for 20 years. What you tell her she has missed?

A. Oh, she has missed so much in terms of technology. But unfortunately, she also missed the lack of sensitivity to our environment. She’ll miss now clean air, regular climates... that kind of thing. I will tell her that we have to... or I shall say in the process of turning around, that’s what she’s missing, in my opinion, fresh air, good clean earth.

1999 – Miss Botswana (Mpule Kwelagobe)

Q. If Miss Universe would become pregnant during her reign, should she be allowed to continue as Miss Universe?

A. Personally, I think Miss Universe is a symbol of a woman as well as she celebrating her femininity. And I believe (thank you), I believe if she would found pregnant and it would not in any way interrupt her duties, I believe as a woman she should celebrate her femininity.

2000 – Miss India (Lara Dutta)

Q. Right now, there is a protest going on outside here calling the Miss Universe pageant
disrespectful of women. Convince them that they are wrong.

A. I think pageants like the Miss Universe pageant, give us young women a platform to foray in the fields that we want to and forge ahead, be it entrepreneurship, be it the armed forces, be it politics. It gives us a platform to voice our choices and opinions that makes us strong and independent that we are today.

After her low placing in the preliminaries (5th place with a 9.083 average) and failure (10th place with a 9.06) in the semi-final interview competition, Marena Bencomo still managed to land in the top 3, and walk away with the 1st runner-up award.

Jensie, did you see this in Mabuhay na? What can you say? What's the news inside?

1. Final screening for the 2002 Bb. Pilipinas will be on February 23, 2002. The Finals Night will be on March 16, 2002.

2. Mr. Philippines-World final screening will be on March 23, 2002 with the finals to be held on April 6, 2002. On the age issue, BPCI contacted the Mr. World Organizers and got the reply that maximum age for Mr. World is 26 years old. Thus, they are retaining the maximum age of 25 years old for the local contest.

3. On the recent post here that Madam Stella Araneta has been invited as a judge in Miss Universe 2002, a Bb Pilipinas top official said that they have no knowledge of this bit of news. Madam Stella who is presently abroad has not sent word along that line either.

4. More Bb. Pilipinas wannabe's that we have invited to join have already sent word that they are indeed participating in this year's Bb. Pilipinas tilt :

a. Katherine Jane Lanuza has confirmed that she is planing in soon from Canada to file her application. This 5'7 sophisticate and charmer won the Star Models Search in Canada.

b. Another 5'7 beauty who recently won a personality contest in the Philippines is also vacationing in Canada and is coming home in the first week of February to enter the contest.

c. An 18-year old Filipina beauty who stand 5'8" has just signed up for the contest. Born of Filipino parents, she grew up in Norway and had some modelling stints there. She was also the national junior skating champ of Norway. This charming and articulate beauty is multi-lingual. She spreaks French, German, English and......Bisaya.

5. On standby are three other potential queens - a 22 year old 5'11 stock trader at the Phil. Stock Exchange, a 5'9" Business Management graduate who works in an Italian Fashion boutique and is an Anna Bayle lookalike and an 18-year old freshman at DLSU who stands 5'8". I hope these ladies make up their minds soon and if they do, this year's competition promises to be even tougher.

6. If you think the above teasers are exciting - wait till you hear the formal announcement of the candidacy of at least 2 towering and intelligent beauties who were discovered by our Mabuhay colleagues. I can't give any clues yet but seeing the pictures, I get the feeling that we may be having a grand time in this year's international pageants. - GERRY DIAZ

I think Brook Lee is a default Miss Universe. The judges preferred Italy or Curacao to win, but di sila nasama sa top 3. So I think I like the top 5 format. Can anyone understand Portugues? I think this is Miss Parana 2002 competing for Miss Brazil Universe 2002:

Yes, I've been informed of the Feb.23 final screening for Bb. Pilipinas last week pa. BPCI moved it to this final date to accommodate more and more aspirants who still can't make up their minds.

MUI's "alleged" invitation for Madame Stella de Araneta to sit as a judge in this year's MU cannot be confirmed as of the moment. I will ask around about this issue. I'm pretty sure it's not true.

I'm very sure that Katherine Lanuza will join the ranks of Anjanette, Tisha and Janelle if she joins and wins any major title. First of all, was she able to meet the 6-month residency requirement? Second, is she truly a Filipino citizen with an original and valid Philippine passport?

OFF TOPIC: The 4 ladies I've invited to join are:
1. A DLSU-*** graduate who stands 5'8".
2. A professor and print model who stands 5'9".
3. An ADMU graduate who stands 5'6".
4. A morena ACSL student.

These are the clues I could give for now. I promise to reveal their identities and profiles once they indeed sign up.

Jensie, so are there any more stunners this year besides Katherine Lanuza?
I think your 5'6 Atenean frined is too short for Bb. well she can join Bb. but if she wins a title, especially for Miss Universe, the competition would eat her up. but it's too early to say anyway. Ang tagal lang talaga ng Feb 23.

Yup marami pa... I'm praying so hard that they pass their respective screenings without any "scandal" or "miracle" brewing up. Remember when Janelle Bautista and Gemma Heaton passed their respective final screenings when they shouldn't have at all! They're not even Filipino citizens to begin with... Janelle even possessed a tampered Philippine passport when she is an American citizen... Tignan mo nga naman ang BPCI... imagine how they could have allowed this thing to happen when it could have easily been prevented! No wonder these girls ended up going home empty-handed.

Yup, 5'6" is really short... but my friend strongly resembles Aishwarya Rai without any exaggeration at all... all she needs to do is to tone her body more.

Oh that's nice. At least with Janelle it was a REEEEEEAL blessing in disguise. So you're friend resembles Ash, cool. But I think for a Philippine rep, we need to send taller girls so we could easily be noticed. But who am I talking here? It's waay too early, let's not count the chicks before they hatch. Ang ayaw ko lang kasi, as early as now, a lot of people are over hyping the girls na may Miss Universe na tayo, nagiging over confident nanaman ang iba eh. kaya yun ang nakaka rindi. Well, we can't blame them, kasi ang reaction nila parang ngayon lang nakakita ng maganda, unlike sa India, Venezuela, USA, every year there are stunners- too many to choose from. Di kagaya dito, on and off, may years na may magaganda merong years na wala.

Our new Miss Paraná 2002 is Keli Kaniak, 18 years old. She succeeded Glaci Lakoski last January 26, Saturday. Preparation is on going to represent the city and efforts have been saved for bringing the title of Miss Brazil 2002. For her preparation, Keli embarks this month for the United States to initiate her training for the Miss Brazil. It is one of the programs from the Miss Paraná 2002. The training includes beauty and style, classes of passarela, oratory and English. The intensive training also includes tactical interview, logical thought and fighting pressure to answer questions. After the season of preparation, Keli will return to Brazil and goes to Rio de Janeiro with the difficult task of representing Paraná for Miss Brazil 2002 this coming March.

Hi Lara! Well actually, Kristine should have been sent to other pageants after Miss World. By the way, pareho tayo ng bet for Miss Brazil. She has the it and if she wins this coming March, malakas ang laban niya sa Miss Universe.

Me too. :) Her surname sounds Jewish to me. After all, I believe there is a large population of Jewish-Americans in the East Coast...

We can all see how conceited Shaunna Gambill is on the pic above...
