I love Natascha without a doubt, but I feel that she is much prettier as Miss Yaracuy than Miss Deutschland.

Nope, Natascha did not make it to the Top 10 of MV2000. Worse, she did not win any special award at all...

MISS VENEZUELA TRIVIA :)

DISTRITO FEDERAL (now known as Distrito Capital) is the state with the most number of Miss Venezuela winners since the pageant began in 1952.

It has 7 winners:

1956- Blanquita Heredia Osio
1957- Consuelo Leticia Nouel Gomez
1960- Gladys Laly Ascanio Arredondo
1961- Ana Griselda Vegas
1965- Maria Auxiliadora De Las Casas McGill
1968- Peggy Kopp Arenas
2001- Cinthia Cristina Lander Zamora*

*NOTE: In the year 2000, the name Distrito Federal was changed to DISTRITO CAPITAL. They are one and the same.

MIRANDA is the most successful state in the pageant, having produced 1 Miss Universe, 2 Miss Worlds, and 1 Miss International.

Venezuela's 4 Miss Universe winners:

VARGAS- Maritza Sayalero Fernandez (1979)
MIRANDA- Irene Laillin Saez Conde (1981)
TRUJILLO- Barbara Palacios Teyde Perez Hernandez (1986)
YARACUY- Yoseph Alicia Machado Fajardo (1996)

Venezuela's 5 Miss World winners:

MIRANDA- Carmen Susana Duijm Zubillaga (1955)
ARAGUA- Carmen Josefina Pilin Leon Crespo (1981)
MIRANDA- Astrid Carolina Herrera Irrazabal (1984)
ZULIA- Ninibeth Beatriz Jimenez Leal (1991)
NUEVA ESPARTA- Jacqueline Maria Aguilera Marcano (1995)

Venezuela's 3 Miss International winners:

MONAGAS- Alejandrina Nina Sicilia Hernandez (1985)
MIRANDA- Consuelo Adler Hernandez (1997)
COSTA ORIENTAL- Vivian Ines Urdaneta Rincon (2000)

There are 3 ladies who were not crowned Miss Venezuela but went on to represent their country in Miss Universe:

1976- Miss Guarico Elluz Comoroto Peraza Gonzales was originally crowned Miss Venezuela 1976. However, she gave up the crown days later all in the name of love. She got married that same year. The first runner-up, Miss Nueva Esparta Judith Josefina Castillo Urribe, went to Kowloon, Hong Kong and placed second over-all to Israel's Rina Messinger.

1991- Jackeline Rodríguez of Miranda was hand-chosen by Organizacion Miss Venezuela president Osmel Sousa to go to Las Vegas, Nevada for MU91. MV's pageant date was pushed back from March to September, necessitating a delegate for MU91. Starting with the 1991 pageant, MV winners went to MU in May of the following year, while the Miss World Venezuela winner continued to go to MW on the same year.

Jackeline settled for the Final 6, losing to Mexico's Guadalupe "Lupita" Jones.

2000- Miss Miranda Martina Thorogood Heemsen was scheduled to compete in Nicosia, Cyprus for MU2000. Unfortunately, Donald Trump refused her entry because of her 1st runner-up placing in MW99. This achievement will certainly provide Martina an unfair edge over the other MU2000 contestants. Osmel then had to come up with a "small" pageant to select the country's bet for MU2000. It was called Miss Republica Bolivariana de Venezuela. Only 10 "hand-chosen" entrants competed in this pageant and Claudia Cristina Moreno Gonzalez of the Distrito Capital state won it by a landslide.

Claudia almost won her country's 5th MU crown when she placed 2nd over-all to India's Lara Dutta.

The way i see it, the thing that will contribute to the fall of the superpowers i.e. India, Venezuela, USA is them being so pageant patty!!!! Miss Universe have totally changed it's standards of it's winners and they no longer look for "I believe yada yada save the world and poverty" kind of miss. That's clear with Oxana's win, even Denise's!! India and Venezuela may enter the top ten consistently but seing them clinching the crown with their current formula might be a little hard. That's why we should start to formulate our own style of training and using the MUO standards as guidelines and not consistently trying to pattern those of the Latinas. But then again were talking about BPCI here so we could only hope so much hehe!!

Sana lang, in actual presentation, she'll retain that wow look! Tagal pa kase eh... Si Eva looks old for her age din d ba? She already joined Miss Venezuela. The trend in Venezuela is, once you've joined, that's it - no more second chances. That's why a lot of Venezolanas are going to other Latin American countries and try their luck there. Except for Natasha, she went to Germany. hehehe

Well it's about time, when Denise won, agad agad nagsulputan ang mga official Miss U Portraits niya, and it did not finish there. Weeks before giving up her crown she was given another make over pa, they dyed her hair. Agbani looks ravishing but still it looks a tad plain compared to the Miss Universe portrait shots- classy and ala super model ang dating.

Agbani looks like an Egyptian beauty in the era of Cleopatra there...at nagiging kamukha na nya si Naomi Campbell dyan  I think that is a better shot rather than the earlier ones---*** sugary spicy getup na nagmukha syang teenbooper!

Thanks for the pix of Aura! *okay* Ang kapal talaga makeup nya sa interview portion...talagang buong pack ng foundation ang nilalagay nila sa mukha eh! :rotfl:

Naku, if only Nigeria could send a delegate as stunning as Agbani in that shot, they would surely win!!!! *okay*

Good Luck to Miss Nigeria Chinenye Ochuba in Miss World 2002! The whole world is yours!!! Hehe!!

STOP HOLDING BACK AND LET THEM FLOOD THIS THREAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! heheheh!

thank you very much to the very cool person who was so generous and nice in sharing her pics...........

yun lang......

di naman ako parang sira 'no......

mas lalo akong nabuhayan ng loob when I learned that she's just 19......LIKE DUH?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! as if may pag-asa ako............ASA KA PA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dun sa runner ups ni cinthia....., yup, mas may magaganda nga sa kanya pero, you have to admit it...., she was good during the MU....good lang kasi si Miss Russia ang nanalo eh......if you watched her closely, she appeared so relaxed kasi she knew she would be IN...., one way or the other....she and Miss China lang yung ibang magwave sa crowd, pansin nyo?! si Miss China, wave ng parang bata.....first timer kasi eh......si cinthia naman, she had this confident wave na parang pitik lang.....gets?! yung iba, very generic beauty queen ang dating....lalo na si miss south africa.....ayun....talo kasi she tried too hard.....well, back to cinthia, you have to admit it also when her make-over pics came out, everyone was like bowing to OSMEL SOUSA........

btw, ba't nga pala na negative press si eva?! was it because she was thought of as being snooty and snobbish?!

OH WELL, LIKE KO PA RIN SHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

heyderguy >> Hi there!

I'm glad you're enjoying Eva's pics. Kakaiba talaga si Eva... She is the Miss Venezuela with the best catwalk skills ever! Watch the MU2001 tape again if you aren't convinced. She has these moves and "turns" which only a supermodel can execute. Kudos to Osmel for bringing the best out of his queens every year... Walang patid yan! Venezuela is always assured of a slot in the Top 5 no matter what!

Congrats! You were very observant during MU2002! Cynthia and Zhuo indeed have these unique styles of waving. Laugh trip yung kay Zhuo-- she's obviously excited. Yung kay Cynthia naman super polished... yeah, she's relaxed coz alam na naman niyang assured na siya of a slot in the Top 5... Regarding Vanessa naman, I believe she was too overconfident... This overconfidence ate her up during the latter part of the competition...

Regarding the negative publicity Eva received in Puerto Rico last May, wala yun. Inggit lang yung mga detractors niya. According to Zorah, Eva was a very kind and cool person... May malasakit sa fellow delegate niya... Zorah had a chance to spend lots of time with Eva when they trained and prepared for the pageant at Osmel's beauty queen boot camp in El Rosal, Caracas.

Jensie,
Eva's father is American not Swedish. Saka yung swimsuit shot niya sa Presentation show, nahalata ko ang dami niyang red spots... and look at her hand, medyo red, must have been ang lamig ng aircon sa Bayamon hehehe. Tama nga di na natatanggal ang mga stretch marks, even a Miss Venezuela couldn't be spared. Walang nagawa si Osmel.

I was able to get hold of Miss Universe 1989 and 1990 tapes, thanks to a pageant tape collector from the US. And here is what I found out:

*Greenland, Gibraltar, and even Haiti was still around that time
*Prior to earlier reports, the Dutch girls started using the "Netherlands" sash only in 1991 and not 1990. "Holland" pa ang gamit nila nung 1990.
*the most boring Parade of Nations was in 1990 when the girls told something about themselves, like this for instance, "I'm a model blah blah and I'm hoping to become blah blah, my name is Mona Grudt." Very boring isn't it? Not the usual greeting in your native tongue and shouting your country out loud. It was only in 1991 when they started the oh so familiar Parade of Nations where people had grown to love, "Hola, blah blah, from Venezuela!!" - something like that. And we all know it lasted til 1997 lang. I liked the Parade of Nations this year compared to 1990.
*If ever Latvia would send a delegate to Miss Universe, technically it won't be their first time in Miss U. Miss Soviet Union 1990 was from Latvia.
*The European girls still wore very traditional costumes from their native lands. Unlike now na puro fancy dresses.
*Eastern Europe was seperated from Europe during the Parade of Nations.
*Iceland and Greenland where included in the North America group in 1989.

Lara_D >> Hi there! Like I told you before, I also have a copy of Miss Universe 1989. :)

-Aside from Gibraltar, Greenland and Haiti; Austria and Luxembourg were also present during MU89. Saka Great Britain was represented by England, Scotland and Wales... Hiwa-hiwalay pa siya... Hehe!

-Miss Mexico Adrianna Abascal wore this funky black "Speedy Gonzales" national costume! Miss ko na yun! I hope the Mexican delegate wears it again next year in Panama!

-Miss Puerto Rico Catalina Villar and Miss Switzerland Karen Bergee were both stunners! They should have been in the Top 10.

-Juliette Powell is the 1st and only woman of color to represent Canada in the Miss Universe pageant.

-In my opinion, MU89 production was the best during the 80's.

Lara, di ba nung Miss Universe 1990, the Top 10 delegates were called wearing their national costumes?

-At 5'11", Gem Padilla is the tallest rep we ever sent to Miss Universe. She ranked 12th overall during MU90.

Yes. Because in the 1999 pageant, Martina Thorogood won that year. She was to compete in both Miss World and Universe (this was a wrong move on Osmel's part). Martina won 1st runner up in Miss World, so Miss Universe barred Martina from joining. So Osmel had no choice but to have a another pageant to select their Rep for Miss Universe 2000. So yun, Miss República Bolivariana de Venezuela was formed and Claudia Moreno won that time na. So in a way si Claudia yung parang tinuring na real Miss Venezuela rather than Martina, because we all know that Venezuela prioritize Miss U over Miss W. It was Claudia not Martina who crowned Eva Ekvall.

Hay! Palapit na ang Miss International, of course my Miss Earth, and Miss World...at oo ng a pala Miss Asia Pacific...

Well, in one of the interviews posted by Gerry_D of Mabuhay beauties, Miss Alzar said that sa pageant na sinalihan niya, modelling was the prime touch of the event and ginawa niya ang best niya na makaadapt dito sa sistemang ito.

That is true.

Sa local winners naman, look at those who clicked ... Ruffa Gutierrez who participated in Look of the Year in 1992 (now Elite Model Look) and Cara Subijano who won Supermodel Philippines 1991.

E paano naman sa Miss Universe?

Well, since Trump is in position hanap niya rin ang ganung standards subalit ang iba lang dito e dapat "refreshing" ang beauty mo...Take note of the winners and semifinalists like ...
Oxana Federova, Denise Quiñones, Evelina Papantoniou, Ling Zhuo, Wendy Fitzwilliam, Joyce Giraud, Verna Vasquez, etc. etc. etc.

More of bilugan pero pretty as in the winners nung 1990 up to present. Si Consuelo Adler lang siguro ang nagmukhang barbie doll pero talagang pretty siya.

Sa Miss Earth????

Well, Carousel kasi is changing its standard to a European one. Kaya nga pinapayat nila ng husto ako to be fit for the competition. It was tough luck nga for Catharina Svenson of Denmark to win the crown kasi isa siya sa pinakamatangkad. I was rooting for Evelin Mikomagi who was a semi-finalist in the Miss Universe 2000 to be in the top 4, and Shamita Singha. Too bad!!!

In general, I believe that the Philippine Pageant organizers should start changing their standards. Mahirap kasi yung naka-stick tayo sa constant look. For example, when Miss Quiambao won 1st Runner Up, everyone even up to the baranggay pageant keep on rooting for that look up to the present. Nakakainis kasi dahil nagbabago bago naman ang trend sa pagpili ng girl kaya maghanap talaga tayo ng okay.

Pangalawa, Philippine Pageants are becoming a declamation contest than a pageant itself. How are the winners adjudged?
You have to be able to share your thoughts and views but not to the extent na yun ang magiging basis for winning.

Lastly, favored to win...by the organizers! Alam ko na ganito ang sistema sa atin. I heard from a friend that in BPCI, Pitoy Moreno gets her "pets" to vie and makes sure that she wins a crown...
I think its okay kung okay talaga ang kandidata. Too bad naman kung hindi. Pero I believe na sana magpascreen sila ng delegada pero huwag nilang ipagdildilan ang kandidata nila to win kasi its very, very UNETHICAL.

We belong to a pageant-crazy nation like the latinas but who says we should not change our standards .

<PS... PowerBubbles, easy lang talaga. I know very intellectual ka and you know a lot pero sana huwag mo naman lagi-lagiin ang pang-cocorrect kasi tao lrin tayong nagkakamali!!! Ü>

Jensie_G and Lara_D thanx again!!!

Thanks Lara and Jensie for the answers. I dont know if its just me or does Claudia seems to look a lot like Jaime Lee Curtis. Also, She is one of the few Miss Venezuela with a warm personality along with Carolina Indriago.

Carlene >> Hi there! Thanks for droppin' by! :)

Thank you so much for your insights! I agree! Iba na ang mga beauty pageants nowadays. Everyone is going for the simple yet classy and refreshing look! Gone were those days when politically-correct beauties with thick layers of make-up would take center stage and shine.

Aside from the difficult task of preparing our girls intellectually, mentually and spiritually, we should never ignore their physical preparations and training. Take for instance the Miss Universe pageant, where the interview competition have been scrapped off from the semi-final round... MUO really wants to "sift" thtrough the Top 10... *okay*

Jensie wasn't all Miss R.B Venezuela 2000 selected from past Miss Venezuela pageants? I can only recall Jhoanna Grimaldo in 1998, Kerellys Ollarves, Miss Costa Oriental in 1996, Laura and Claudia in 1999, Sandra Buseth in 1997. When did the other girls vied for Miss Venezuela? I really liked Jhoanna Grimaldo. I think she should've been in the top 3.

My pleasure Jensie_G. Pero dun sa isangpost mo about the 1999 batch of beauties...well, I think hindi rin. Siguro with her (Ms Quiambao's) training in Venezuela tapos may supermodel features naman siya she could make it. Lalaine should have been a good rep for Miss International kasi yung features na yun ang talagang bebenta e.

By the way, heavy preparations ang ginagawa nina Tita Lorraine (Schuck) about the pageant. Let's pray na lang for April. Ü

Jensie, I think it's high time for us to contact Joey Espino para nang sa ganun makalaban next year si VernaLynn Buckley. She has all the good credentials to help her land in the Top 10. Ang ganda niya sa Mega Magazine. She represented the Philippines in Asian Faces Search in HK and was adjudged 2nd runner up. She is now representing th Philippines in the Shanghai Modelling Search with Marjay Ramirez. Plus, she competed in Supermodel of the World Philippines 1999. Palaban ito for Miss Universe!!!

Also, I recommend JP Abinuman for Miss International kasi kakaiba siya. Kung may alternate siguro si Grace Coloso.

For Miss World, I'm sure Joey Espino wouldn't mind letting her alaga Gayle Apelario Ong to compete for it. She also competed in the Supermodel of the World in 2001.

Ang daming possible candidates din gaya ni Justine Gabionza, Honeylet Gascon, Merriam Santiago, Gina Ritter. Secret girl Val de los Santos.

Plus I would like to add, change the sponsor na rin (kundi kami ang gagawa sa Carousel .... yuck as if papayag si Tita Lorraine!Ü) from Unilever to P&G.

Well, see ya all again.

With Oxana's win and the exclusion of pre-pageant favorites who was dubbed to be well prepared i.e. COLOMBIA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC and PUERTO RICO, I couldnt help but wonder, does long preparation really benefit anymore or is it about being in the right place and the right time??? I think Miss Universe 2002 changed the pageant forever. Clearly the Organization or should I say Donald Trump is looking for girls who are "super model-ish" type. In our local pageant scene however, we are still seemed to be stucked with Miriam's wave, just like what Carlene said, even the barangay pageants still sport that "Miriam Pose" So is it suffice to say that BPCI should hand over the franchise to the Elite modeling agency and have them stage the pageant for Miss Universe??? What do you guys think?

JENSIE_G

power(bubbles) >> Yup, correct. Aside from being former MV contestants, they were also supermodels from various modeling agencies scattered all over Caracas...

Here's the Top 10 again and the pageant they previously joined...

1. Daniela Mateu- Miss Monagas during MV95
2. Maria Alejandra Marquez- Miss Miranda during MV97
3. Claudia La Gatta- Miss Barinas during MV97
4. Johanna Grimaldo- Miss Tachira during MV98
5. Angie Perez- Miss Barinas during MV98
6. Susan Buseth- Miss Yaracuy during MV97
7. Hildeghard Gehrenbeck- Miss Merida during mV96
8. Claudia Moreno- Miss Distrito Capital during MV99
9. Maria Laura Lugo- Miss Costa Oriental during MV99
10. Karellys Ollarves- Miss Costa Oriental during MV96

Hi there Carlene, wow i cant believe a Beauty Queen actually comes here and post along with the fans. Anyways, i would just like to ask you a favor if you dont mind, Since you have a contact with Carousel and Ms Shuck, can you advise her to make the pageant even more grand this year and consider some of the pageant fans' suggestion such as the toning down of the huge sash and a new design of crown. Theres a lot of good suggestions at the Mabuhay MB and i think they are all good intention to better the pageant even more. I really believe that Miss Earth could be at par with Miss World and Miss Universe!!!

Carlene >> Hi again!

Yeah, Miriam was an exception. She was really destined to put our country back into the world map by making it big on the global stage of the Miss Universe pageant... :)

Yeah, Verns Buckley is a superb choice! This girl was modeled everywhere... With a solid foundation and a good background in modeling, Verns could easily rival even those from the Europe and Latin and South America... Good choice, Carlene! *okay*

JP Abinuman joined Bb. Pilipinas 1999. Unfortunately she did not make it to the Top 10. Worse, she didn't win any special award at all. However, she's only 21... still young and fresh to give Bb. Pilipinas another try.

Thanks again! :)

Lara_D >> Yeah I agree... Veruska kasi seemed so cariñosa... She was very emotional too...

sebastian01 >> It's more of a "being-at-the-right-place-at-the-right-time" thingie... Remember Miriam, she only had a month to prepare for MU99 but look what happened to her... She narrowly missed the crown just because of an unimpressive answer during the Final Q&A...

Your idea sounds good... Unless BPCI "re-invents" itself soon, our chances to make it big in the international arena will forever be slim...

Hey Jensie. Another stage which I liked so much was the set in 1993 that was very exotic, Manila was another great set for me. I find the Windhoek set pretty stuffy, but I liked the swimsuit set so much. 1996 was alright, it had the best set in swimsuit and evening gown especially that long flight of stairs. it'll really test your grace. btw can you post a photos of the following sets here? if its alright. ALso the 1992 evening gown back drop was way gorgeous.

Ako naman sindak ako talaga sa swimsuit competition nung MU99 coz of the excitement the limbo dancers added to the already-scorching hot competition taking place... *okay*

Astig din yung sa Las Vegas because all of the Top 10 delegates were stunning! Walang panget, I swear! Saka I loved that tent gimmick! Very reminiscent of the Miss USA 1996 swimsuit competition...

Okay din yung swimsuit competitions ng MU94 and MU95... Parehong ginamitan ng totoong tubig! Hehe! MU94 had fountains while MU95 had a beautifully-crafted waterfall on the stage's side..

:) Hey. Thoguh 1998 was also nice because of the intensity of teh competition, i found the music boring luckily Veruska, Wendy and Joyce were all there to increase the momentum of the pageant. in my opion i think they could've used a very lively Hawaiian luau music. I like the idea of the torch bearers and the hawaiian dancers there.

Hello. Though 1998 was ok, i find the music boring. they could've used a Hawaiian luau music instead of that. I like the idea of the hawaiian fire players and the hawaiian dancers there. You said. I know from the moment the music was played in 1996 that it'll be a nice swimsuit competition due in part to the quality of music, swimsuit and most of all the semi-finalists. And the girls, wow they did what they can during the swimsuit competition. The pose, the strut. All the elements of a great swimsuit competition. I also liked that of Miami Beach in 1997. 60's music top off by a wonderful swimsuit by Jantzen and an art deco inspired acrchitecture for the stage. What Miami Beach and South Beach are known for.

Everyone was so elegant, sophisticated, intelligent, sexy, and beautiful. Also all of them happanes to have great hair

Hi there Apostle , Unfortunately the 2000 preliminary ranking were not released to the public. These ladies are the ones in my opinion deserved citation. However though, the delegates that ranked 11'th to 15'th were released to the Cypriot press and if my memory serves me right, they were:

11 Czech Republic
12 Netherlands
13 Aruba
14 Germany
15 Japan.

I know that Czech Republic and the Netherlands placed 11th and 12th respectively but Im not sure if Aruba, Germany and Japan are in their right rank although Im sure that these are the five delegates that rouded up the top 15.

I really feel bad that Nina was not able to make the cut that year. It was her hair during the swimsuit competition and her gown. And of course, unforgiving media hype.

Read this article in yesterday's Philippine Star
------------------------------------------------------------

BEIJING (AFP) -- For China, taking third place in the Miss Universe contest the first time it entered a candidate might seem something to make hearts swell with pride. Instead, Chinese officials are going to great lengths to simply ignore the contestant, Shanghai model Zhuo Ling. More than that, some media are questioning whether the seemingly bizarre way the 19-year old was selected to represent her country this year makes her achievement closer to a scandal. The strange case of Zhuo Ling goes to the heart of China's deeply ambiguous attitudes towards women.

Although women are officially equal to men since the communists came to power, "holding up half the sky" in Mao's phrase - China remains a deeply sexist place which likes to pretend otherwise. Two months before the pageant, Zhuo was strutting nervously down the catwalk at a remote resort in south China's Guangdong province.

"Hello everyone. I'm candidate number one Zhuo Ling. I'm from Zhejiang (province)," Zhuo told judges at the Miss Universe China, before hurrying off.

No oher contestant emerged. Minutes later local cultural bureau officials marched in, declared the contest illegal and shut it down.

------------------------------------------------------------

It's the first time I've posted here but I've been following this thread for the longest time. I'm not sure if there's any truth to this article but thought it was worth posting it here since it's still a human interest story.

nice_only_child >> Hi there! Long time no see ah. Musta na? Thanks for the article...

I believe there's some truth to this article. I remember reading that the Miss Universe China 2002 pageant was indeed "shut down" a day before its scheduled grand coronation night... Tapos I was shocked na lang bigla to read in Belleza Venezolana that a certain Ling Zhuo had won that pageant held on March 31.

I also read a day after the MU2002 Live Telecast that a lot of Chinese people were dissatisfied and unhappy with Zhuo's victory... How could that be? Winning 3rd place overall in Miss Universe is not an easy task... Grabe ang crab mentality ng mga Chinese!

Mahirap talagang papuriin ang mga Chinese eh...I don't think that has something to do with gender issue kase sa Olympics naman...men and women are given much accolade for their efforts; in fact, since women seem more competitive in their respective sports, they are given much praises than their men.

Miss Indiana Melyssa Jill Ramos... Let's wait for her official headshot. I believe may igaganda pa siya! With her exotic looks, she just might make it to the Top 10... It's too early to tell though... :)

Actually the caliber of the Aruban delegates have greatly improved compared to the Miss Arubas of the 80's and early 90's. So meaning, Miss Aruba 2003 is way better and will be more prepared compared to her predecessors from the early 90's.
