NBC's beauty pageant deal

HOLLYWOOD, California (Reuters) -- NBC has inked a $50 million deal with Donald Trump to become the mogul's new beauty pageant partner, Variety reports.

The network replaces CBS, which has opted to sell its 50% stake in the Miss Universe Organization -- which produces the Miss USA, Miss Universe and Miss Teen USA pageants -- back to Trump, who will sell it on to NBC.

Under the five-year deal, NBC will pay Trump $10 million per year to broadcast the three pageants starting in 2003. As part of the pact, NBC sibling Telemundo will become the exclusive Spanish-language broadcaster for the three telecasts in the U.S. Also, ShopNBC will handle merchandising and fulfillment for Miss USA pageant-related merchandise on TV and the Internet.

A CBS spokesman said the network notified Trump in March that it wasn't interested in renewing its deal for the three pageants and that Trump was free to shop the telecasts elsewhere. CBS' contract with Trump officially ends after the network airs the Miss Teen USA pageant this August.

The Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants have aired on CBS every year since 1960, while the Miss Teen USA franchise has also been seen on CBS ever since it launched in 1983. But CBS is said to have lost interest in the three pageants after this year's disappointing Miss USA returns. This year's telecast, which aired March 1, attracted just 7.6 million viewers -- the lowest in history and down dramatically from 14.3 million in 1998, the start of its most recent five-year pact.

NBC is said to have found interest in the organization after the Miss Universe pageant performed surprisingly well last month, attracting 11.3 million viewers -- its best showing since 1998's 12.3 million.

Well both of them were "Close but no Cigar" Both Delegates were near misses from the magic ten. Chantal placed 12th on the 2000 Edition while Kim Kotter finished 11'th as reported by GlobalBeauties. Jensie, do you know Nina Alagao and Karen's ranking. I know that Zora finished 27th was that but not sure though.

19-year old Rava Maiarii was crowned Miss Tahiti Nui 2002 last June 7. She stands 5 feet 8 inches. She will represent her island in the Miss World 2002 pageant set for November in Abuja, Nigeria.

Lara_D: I believe tapos na yung conflict between Tahiti and the Miss France Organization. Nagka-conflict lang coz si Mareva Galanter yung gustong ipadala sa Miss World '99. Eh hindi naman puwede coz the Miss World France Organization selects the French rep for Miss World. As we all know, Mareva was then under the exclusive contract with the Miss France Org. Kaya ayun... nagkagulo sila...

I agree. Tahia is definitely Miss Universe material. I will definitely root for her next year in Panama if ever... :up:

Well Japan sent a really shocker this year. A real stunner... I was disappointed pa nga na she did not make the cut. But she's one of the strongest Miss Japans in recent years. Since somebody took over the franchise for Miss Japan Universe, it seems that the Japanese girls come well prepared and come with very very stylish and not to mention very expensive wardrobe. TRINIDAD and Tobago's Jeannette La Caille is not fancied by the English bookmakers to follow in the illustrious footsteps of Giselle La Ronde (1986) and win the Miss World title in idyllic Seychelles today.

According to the latest odds, Jeannette is posted at 25-1 to win the contest from the 85 other participants.

The early favourite is Spain's Rocio Fernandez at 6-1, with South Africa's Kerishnice Naicker close on her heels at 7-1 followed by the British Duo of Emmalene Mcloughlin (a florist from Manchester) and Ireland's Vivienne Doyle both at 9-1.

Miss Holland 1984 looks better in the live Miss Universe telecast. I thought she will enter the top 5. I remember during the prelims only 2 girls got a score above 8.000---Miss Sweden (the eventual winner, Yvonne Ryding) and Miss Philippines (Desiree Verdadero).

Desiree was smashing in the opening number with her Renee Salud Muslim-inspired gown a la Ruffa Gutierrez in Miss World with a difference: Desiree's costume was all white!

Desiree did not expect to enter the top 10 so she focused on winning the costume award.

But she was a top favorite and she placed in the top 5 of the interview ("I will tell them that modeling is not a stable job..it is not an easy job...I have a lot of designer friends so they will get me when they want to get me!") and top 3 of the swimsuit and evening gown competitions of her batch.

She can easily place 1st or 2nd but she delivered a weak answer in the final round: "I will tell them Miss Universe is pride and I will spread peace and goodwill to all!" in response to the question: What will you tell young girls around the world in your travels as Miss Universe?

The pageant during Desiree's batch was held July 9 at the Miami Convention Center. In contrast to 2002's 78 candidates, 1984 had 81 delegates.

Miss Universe was SWEDEN's Yvonne Ryding, SOUTH AFRICA's Leticia (Tisha) Snyman was a surprise 2nd placer. VENEZUELA 'S Carmen María Montiel Avila placed 3rd, Desiree Verdadero placed 4th and heavy audience favorite COLOMBIA's Susana Caldas Lemaitre placed 5th.

GERMANY - Brigitta Berx
GUATEMALA - Ilma Julieta Urrutia Chang
HOLLAND - Nancy Neede
THAILAND - Savinee Pargarnung
USA - Mai Therese Shanley

Jessica Palao of Gibraltar was Miss Amity. INDIA's Juhi Chawla won Best National Costume. URUGUAY's Yissa Pronzatti Pérez was 1st runner-up, with HONG KONG's Mina Godenzi as 2ND runner-up. SPAIN's Garbiñe Abásolo García was Miss Photogenic.

It is interesting to note that Miss Thailand is from Temple City High School in Los Angeles (where 1988 Miss Universe Porntip Nakhirunkanok also studied briefly. Miss Guatemala Ilma Julieta Urrutia Chang eventually won Miss International 1984 title in Japan.

i saw some parts of the intro (national costume and that marc anthony performance), announcement of top 10 and the announcement of the top 3, the crowning and the victory walk of miss russia... (kasabay kasi ng pay it forward sa HBO so hindi ko pinanood ng buo! hehe)

it started at 9:30 and ended at 11!

this telecast had chinese subtitles, better audio and video quality (very clear reception!) and most important of all, LESS COMMERCIALS!

definitely waaaay better than the RPN 9 telecast!

About Justine, did you notice when Phil Simms was asking them if they were ready for the results, she was nodding. Parang di mapakali. Si Oxana naman, unassuming and relaxed. i was able to watch the Miss Universe Pageant in Star Phoenix on cable. And it feels really good when you're watching it and there are no commercials, clear picture and sounds. Now I finally heard the voices from Miss Switzerland to Yusgoslavia. The sound was so clear and loud that I could here the tingling sound created by Miss Colombia's costume during the Parade of Nations.

I knew those foreign channels are of some use even if it comes once a year. hehehe I love STAR PHOENIX!!!!

Pero other than these, Star Chinese Phoenix's telecast (kahit ba delayed) ay perfect!!! Ang linaw na ang ganda pa ng sound quality! Sana mag-live telecast din sila in the near future... I will definitely choose them over RPN 9 anytime! :up:

The reason why Star Phoenix cut a lot of segments was because they were trying to cut the pageant to 1 hour and 30 min lang - originally it's 2 hours long. Too bad, but nevertheless, it was perfect because all the juicy stuff was left intact. At ang ganda ng quality pa.

Jensie, Andrea really looks good, she was one of "Osmel's Angels" She, Zora and Eva. I wonder what happened to her. She was also a heavy favorite but not as hyped as this year's Miss Colombia. Btw, i forgot to mention i was in Puerto Rico last May but I wasnt able to catch the Miss Universe frenzy because I went during the first week of May and I stayed at The Westin Rio Mar, this same hotel that the 2001 delegates stayed at and I must say it is a GORGEOUS resort and Puerto Rico itself is breath taking!! No wonder MUO held the pageant there twice in a row, its really a beautiful place!!!!:D

Remembering Arlene Peterkin...

She represented Trinidad & Tobago in Miss Universe 1995, where she was a finalist. Too bad she gave a canned answer during the Final 6 Q&A-- which is why she didn't advance to the Magic 3... Oh well..

She works as a flight stewardess for her flag carrier, BWIA International Airways... :)

Thanks nga pala sa info ha about the mu turn mw delegates! In line with that, so that means na pag runner up kase sa mu, you can not join mw na di ba? Kase that will be conflicting interests/responsibilities..di ba? Pero let's say, nanalo sila this year on Ms World (kahit runner up lang), can they join MU next year? (Eto'y para sa mga cases na tulad nila S.Africa at Nigeria na both MU and MW rep of the country :) ) E sa local pageants natin, pwede rin ba na this year runner up or winner sya sa Mutya tapos next year, she tries her luck naman in Bb since tapos na ring reign nya?!?

During the last quarter of 1999, the Miss Universe Organization implemented a new rule na once a certain delegate makes it to the Top 3 of Miss World, she can no longer compete in Miss Universe. Unfair advantage daw kasi. Take the case of Martina Thorogood as an example.

The last Miss World runner-up to see action in Miss Universe was Michelle Khan of Trinidad & Tobago. She won 2nd runner-up in Miss World 1995 and competed the next year in Miss Universe 1996. She did not make it to the Top 10 though...

Sabrina Schepmann of Germany was then-reigning Miss Intercontinental 2000 but was still allowed to compete in Miss Universe 2000 in Cyprus. She did not make it to the Top 10...

Gabriela Aguilar was then-reigning Miss Asia Pacific 1996 but was still allowed to compete in Miss Universe 1997, where she ranked 12th overall!

Miss World, on the other hand, is not that strict...

Sonia Raciti made it to the Top 5 of Miss Universe 1999 but was still allowed to compete in Miss World 1999, where she won 2nd runner-up...

Regarding Mutya & Bb. naman...

If you competed in Bb. Pilipinas on a certain year and landed on the Top 5, you can't join Mutya or any other pageant coz of the responsiblities that go with your runner-up position. Madame Araneta loves to experiment a lot... Kaya tignan mo, napadala sina Maricar and Mitch sa Turkey nang wala sa schedule-- and they both won! Maricar won Miss Globe 2001 while Mitch won Miss Tourism International 2001...

Saka if you win a runner-up position in Bb. Pilipinas, you can till compete again provided na hindi ka parang sina Maricar and Michelle na nanalo ng international title. Gets?

If you competed in Mutya naman and landed in the Top 5 there, okay lang na mag-compete ka in another local pageant agad. Eto ang alam ko ha.

I like the Miss Universe 1999 contest kung saan nanalo ang ating Philippine delegate na si Miriam Quiambao.

I think Miss Spain and Miss Philippines are very close friends kasi nakita ko sa Miss Universe 1999 contest na hinalikan ni Miss Spain si Miriam Quiambao on the Final 3.

Nakita ko sa isang newspaper na magkayakap silang dalawa ni Miss Spain at saka si Miriam after the pageant.

If I'm not mistaken, hindi pa nagkakaroon ng time nagkasabay ang Summer Olympic Games at FIFA World Cup kasi I think talagang ang ginamit nilang year for World Cup is in between the Summer Olympics.

Pero, since 1998, sabay ang Winter Olympic Games sa FIFA World Cup. Dati kasi magkasabay ang Summer at WInter Olympics, pero ginawa nilang 2 years apart ang Summer at Winter Olympics, para siguro hindi mainip ang tao, kasi mahirap nga namang every 4 years ang hihintayin nila to watch an Olympic match.

Imagine, kung every 4 years din ang Miss Universe!

Nagtataka lang ako kung bakit ang Filipinas, which was also colonized by Spain, like South America, ay hindi mahilig sa soccer. Eh samantalang ang buong South America ay baliw na baliw dito.

Anyway, sayang talaga ang England, my fave team of all time.

Grabe if every 4 years ang Miss Universe, maraming mababaliw nun! Hehe! If that's the case, then MUO must really put on a good show for everyone since every 4 years lang nga kunyari ang pageant nila... Oh well...

I'm no expert in Philippine history ha... Pero I believe the main reason why we aren't in to soccer that much is because of America's strong influence to us... If I'm not mistaken, they introduced basketball to our culture-- and kumapit talaga tayo dito... Ang nagtataka ako ay bakit hindi sikat ang baseball dito mashado...

Wow! Ibang istorya pala ang kapalaran ng Venezuela sa soccer! Hehe! Kung gano nila kalakas lamapasuhin Brazil sa mga pageants ay ganun naman din sila kalakas talunin ng Brazil sa soccer! Bigayan lang, hehe! :D
