In reaction to Carlene's post related with Bb. losing it's touch, though it's true but it's not losing its prestige as what Jensie said. Ask a common folk on the street, what would the first thing in his/her mind when they hear the word beauty pageant? Miss Universe. And who has the franchise for Miss Universe? Bb. Pilipinas. Face it... the most recognizable beauty queen in the land is the girl who gets to go to Miss Universe - Gloria Diaz, Margie Moran, Charlene, and Mirriam to name a few - but we all know this already.

2. Charina Zaragoza, 1968 BB Pilipinas Universe became a recording artist in Madrid in the 1970s-early 1980s.
3. Gloria Diaz joined a small beauty pageant --Australian modeling agency owner June Watkins search for the top model. She lost. She was just a runner-up/
4. Aurora Pijuan got involved with a hair-pulling fight with a fellow student during her first day of classes when she was in Grade 1 at St. Scholastica's College. She lost. The woman who had beaten her became an Ateneo and La Salle Professor!
5. Armi Barbara Crespo (Miss U 1972 SF) and Chiqui Brosas (Miss U 74 4RU) wore evening gowns designed by their discoverer Rudy Fuentes. Fuentes also discovered Maria Isabel Lopez.
6. Gloria Diaz and Anthea Robles (Bb Pilipinas Intl 88) were first discovered by balikbayan designer Rene Factora although it was Renee Salud who entered the latter in the intl competition.
7. Chat Silayan was not favored by the press to win the Bb. Pilipinas Universe title in 1980. The early favorites were Wendy Villarica and Marilous Bendigo (Mutya 81). Both became movie starlets and did not place in the top 15. Incidentally's Chat's runners-up are distinguished women: 1st runner up was Susan Africa (now wife of Spanky Manikan and respected TV/film/theater actress). 2RU was Tina Maristela (Black Shop owner, top model, married to Rico Ocampo of Sari-Sari)
8. Incidentally Bb. Pilipinas Intl 80 Diana Jean Chiong was rude to her successor, Peachy Sacasas. Chiong whispered to Sacasas the words: "I dont like you..." when she was putting the crown on the latter's forehead. Sacasas is now a wealthy businesswoman married to an Alimurung, a top surgeon/cardiologist. Chiong is overweight but is into some business in Ozamis City.
9. Melanie Marquez nearly did not make it to the top 15 of Bb Pilipinas 79 because of her inability to speak in English. She only got 1 vote from Mario Tan of Plaza Fair (preliminary judge). However, the European royalty guests (here in Manila to inaugurate Marina Marbella now Caylabne Resort) of then First Lady Imelda Marcos saw Melanie during the final night and they insisted that she be included n the top 15. And Melanie got an extra boost from Gloria Diaz (one of the judges) who fought that her inability to speak in English properly should not be taken against her. Gloria said something like "If the only problem is her English, for God's sake make her Bb International."
10. Ironically, when Gloria judged in 2001, she was unable to see the very same wisdom she had seen in 1979. She was unable to convince other judges (especially Loren Legarda) to make Michelle Reyes go to Miss World and Maricar Balagtas go to Miss International. Legarda wanted the results to be based solely on the final answer. So Gilrhea (Gloria's niece, apparently) and Maricarl Tolosa (a ward of Ogie Atos, a BPCi choreographer and insider) won titles.

The moral of the long story: It's time to move on. BPCI must be overhauled.

Lalaine. 1RU Michelle Archangel is pregnant (she gave birth in November 1999) and overaged for Miss Intl (24). Joelle Pelaez refused the offer because she is busy with other things. Non finalist Georgina Sandico takes over. Notable delegates like Anna May Corveau, Joanna Paula ABinuman and Evita Bunyi did not make it to the top 10.
e. 2000: Everybody expected Nina Ricci to shine but she fizzled. Annwen and Joanna did not place.
f. 2001: Zora could only snatch a Best i Costume runner up position. The wrong girls end up winning the major titles (With the exception of Zora, Maricar Balagtas should have gone to Miss International and Michelle Reyes to Miss World--clearly, Tolosa and Quinzon should not have been in the top 10). And what happened to Imee Su Martinez and Precious Lara Quigaman in the top 10?
g. Nobody world-class qualified to be candidate. Worse, Pitoy took over and look at the Miss Universe results.

Someone has to buy the BPCI franchise or simply take over. Jensie is the most logical successor of Madame Stella. Or the PEXers from this forum should take over. I am sure Philippine pageantry will be alive and well again.

have to disagree. the malas is not with the crown but its with the organization itself. for me Binibini to regain its touch better get rid off Pitoy first thenn i think everything will be fine. And Anna Craig though beautiful had poor interview skills which will kill her in Miss World. That's it.

This dress was designed and conceptualized by Israeli designer Galit Levi.

With this creation, Galit wanted to show that life in Israel must continue despite the force in the Palestinian areas and the bomb attacks. "This dress symbolizes the security situation here. I want to say to the people to go out and amuse themselves, Galit added.

Ilanit initally planned to wear this rough bulletproof military waistcoat, which was embroidered also from diamond built up motives for flower, during the evening gown competition of the Presentation Show and Live Telecast.

Julianna admitted she had surgical silicon interferences in her cheeks and as well as her breasts. Besides fat being sucked off, her distant ears were "corrected" and certain birth marks were also removed.

Unfortunately for this babe from Rio Grande do Sul, her surgeries didn't pay off. She still went home empty-handed. Her poor choice of swimsuit (she wore a 1-piece) and evening gown obviously did her. Her poorly-done hairdo also got in the way...

Questions of the Day!

These are some of my questions in mind regarding Philippine beauty pageants...

1. Why are there so many special awards to be given?
Though there are a lot of sponsors needed by the event, why is it that there should be one for every sponsors. Miss Universe, Miss World, and Miss USA doesnt cater to giving a gazillion of special awards unlike Miss venezuela and Miss India. the question remains with a why.
Suggestions: Just give out at least 7 special awards: Miss Photogenic, Miss Friendship, Miss Talent(Like BPCI), Miss Style, Best in Swimsuit, and Best in Long Gown.

2. Why do we have to have the modelling of the longgowns and the swimsuit of all the candidates on the finals night? Cant we just have 2 Saturdays to show the preliminary judging and the finals para hindi masyadong dragging.

3. Why is it on the top 10, tanging q&a na lang ang pinapakita? Don't you think its unfair ang ganitong setup? I only see Miss Philippines doing such kaya lang dragging kasi sa situation sa number 2.

4. Should Unilever judges take a major say in the contest? There are instances when deserving girls competing were not able to land on a good spot because of conflict of interest. As well, nondeserving girls land on a goodspot because of conflict of interest. instance: Bb.Pilipinas 1993.

5. Why is it that of the three pageants, binibini is already losing its touch and prestige? Is it Stella Araneta? Is it Pitoy Moreno? Why can't they get a good batch of ladies just like 1993, 1994, 1996, 1999?

6. Who among the mutya candidates lastnight has a chance to vie for binibini next year?

i guess they can't do away na with the special awards. so siguro what i can suggest na lang is instead of giving sashes, flowers and plaques to the winners of special awards, trophy na like what they give in miss u. kasi di ba minsan there's a candidate na nananalo ng multiple awards. like nina before (sorry favorite ko talaga siya) anim na special awards ang nakuha niya. so anim na sashes, bouquets, and plaques yun so di na malaman kung saan ikakabit sa katawan niya. tsaka ang ******* magkabit ng sash yung ibang reps ng sponsors. lalo tuloy tumatagal.:D

regarding mutya naman, marami pa ba nanonood nito? anyway, i watched it saturday night. sobrang tagal ng pageant. it started at around 9pm saturday and finished at 1:15 am sunday. maganda ang presentation, i think it was better than binibini and at par with miss philippines. there were pretty candidates but not world-class beauties. average lang. in terms of the quality of the candidates, better ang sa bb. and miss p. winners were desrving but they were quite short. they had interesting background also. tsaka okey ang q & a. isa lang ang nag-buckle. si katherine aban. remember her? shes' a bb. 2002 semifinalist.

the winners were:

mutya - miriam chui, 5'5 1/2, a child psychology major from san antonio college and rep of the filipino community of california

1st - forgot the name. i like her. she's a sports science major from up diliman and member of the rowing team who competed in singapore

2nd - areza something. communication arts student from ust. nakakatawa to. she was awarded the people's choice award by a certain newspaper. voting was done thru text and a lucky texter can also win a prize. yung winner areza din ang apelyido. kamag-anak lang siguro niya ang bumoto sa kanya.

3rd - i also forgot the name. development studies student from up-manila.

4th - geraldine something. a landscape architecture grad from up-diliman and currentsly attending psid, taking up interior design.

ang pangit ng final question. how would they want to be portrayed by a national artist, through a song, painting, poem, or sculpture? kasi the theme that night was a tribute to national artists.

ano kaya yun. but the final five answered it beuatifully.

i think candidate #8 can join binibini. i forgot the name but she was the one wearing a minorka mercado-ish white gown. she's 5'9 and from pampanga, i think. nice body. she looks like a supermodel. she would fare better better if there was a different and younger set of judges.

the judges nga pala that night included richard gomez, joey marquez, rudy fernandez, and some "senior citizens" from god-knows-where embassies. there was only 1 female judge, imee marcos.

i guess they can't do away na with the special awards. so siguro what i can suggest na lang is instead of giving sashes, flowers and plaques to the winners of special awards, trophy na like what they give in miss u. kasi di ba minsan there's a candidate na nananalo ng multiple awards. like nina before (sorry favorite ko talaga siya) anim na special awards ang nakuha niya. so anim na sashes, bouquets, and plaques yun so di na malaman kung saan ikakabit sa katawan niya. tsaka ang ******* magkabit ng sash yung ibang reps ng sponsors. lalo tuloy tumatagal.:D

Example na lang yung kay Kate Manalo. I forgot the award though... Sumabit yung sash sa hair niya tapos natagalan talaga bago maalis... Tapos yung mga foreigner na presenters naman ay baliktad maglagay ng sashes. Laugh trip!

Saka you're right-- pampatagal nga ang mga special awards na ito. Isipin mo, after i-award, babasahin at uulitin pa ng anchor woman yung lahat ng names ng winners... Ang laking time na nako-consume nito.

just got this from mabuhay messageboard. according to an article daw on manila standard last sunday, gilrhea is being sought by the producers of baywatch for her to join the show but her mother doesn't approve. has anybody read it? wala kasing online na manila standard e.

i think she's really pretty now. last saw her in points of view. siguro they find her beauty exotic, just like the other baywatch babes. but she has to work on her diction though, kung totoo talaga.

Since Miss World scrapped the national costumes, I remember they opted for the girls to wear fantasy dresses made by their local designers for their introductions. The evening gown of Miss Croatia reminds me of that. But her evening gown suits her well. She looks beautiful in it.

Miss Universe Oxana Fedorova during the Fashion Extravaganza. New pictures of Agbani are not really that flattering. It seems she's posing in some cheap mag. It lacks the sophistication, some "umph," and the creativity compared to the official portraits of the Miss Universe winners. Miss World is just sooo freakin lame. If I can remember correctly during the Miss U pageant in manila in 1994, a giant picture slide was used.
if you can remember, The scene changed from BANAUE RICE TERRACES(presentation portion) to Taal Volcano(gowen competition).
I may have forgotten the other slides, If these are the kinds of slides you may be talking about.......... if not, just I am on the different line of thought:D

Those used during MU94 provided the stage backdrop-- different Philippines sceneries like the Banaue Rice Terraces, Mayon Volcano, Hidden Valley falls and Taal Volcano were featured.

It was originally used during the evening gown competition of Miss World 1998.

-The Miss International pageant was first held in August of 1960 in Long Beach, California. Colombia's Maria Stella Marquez Zawadzky was its 1st ever winner. As we all know, Madame Stella is the chairperson and head of the Bb. Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI).

-Long Beach hosted the Miss International pageant from 1960-1965. Tokyo, Japan hosted it from 1966-2001. This year, the pageant travels to Hawaii, USA for the 1st time.

-By the way, Hawaii sends a separate delegate to both Miss International and Miss World pageants.

You would really see Carolina Indriago's genuine sweetness!!! No wonder she has a lot of fans. Her sweetness is such a contrast from people's perception of Miss Venezuelas being cold competitors. She could have won Miss Congeniality. A big difference from Eva Ekvall, which some people mistook her as being arrogant.

That look and that gown would match perfectly in Miss Universe. An easy top ten spot! But too bad Zhuo Ling (the way her Chinese name is pronounced) surpassed her. The trend usually goes that most European countries send their more stunning girls to Miss World than in Miss Universe. Now, thank goodness it's the other way around!!!! Well, in Russia's case.

People raised a lot of eyebrows, when they learned that Miss Russia in Miss World 2001 was able to get in the top 10? What gives? And it's rahter obvious she sucked in the Q&A. By answering her question in just one word. There are times sablay talaga Miss World, you see their girls without any substance. And her smile looks freaky. hehehe

To the moderator, the picture-trading that's happening here is not for the Miss Universe pageant alone. Miss World and other pageant pictures are also posted here. The reason why Miss Universe pictures flood the last few pages of this thread is because it's the recently-concluded pageant. Miss International and Miss World will come at a later date.

I believe that a change of title is more appropriate. This thread has sense, gives a lot of information and is not in anyway offensive to either reading or non-reading P-Ex members.

My only concern is that of the 144 or so pages of this thread, only around a 10th of the pages will be accessed on a "regular basis." I just don't see the point of keeping the thread as long as it can go when even the most avid of posters will not even go back and look at the 10th previous page?

I'm not against picture-trading or anything, and I don't really see anything wrong with the thread. But I find it disturbing that, since this is the fastest-growing thread in this forum, in a few months time the space for this thread in the forum page will grow larger and larger and larger until it covers practically half of your browser window. Soon enough even your posting a new reply will take long to complete because the whole thread will have to be rethreaded before your reply is added, and thus more time will be consumed.

Pero I'll leave you regulars to decide what you want to do. Send me a PM when you arrive at a decision, whether to lock it or change the thread title.

Regarding the closure of this thread, I'm also against it - yeah change the title nalang. Well to point out some reasons why it should not be closed, I've been lurking around the Campus Chat Forum, and I've seen a lot of threads who have more pages than this. Example the "Dito ka kung Tomasino Ka" thread which is 161 pages na and the "s20 c2t5 elo!!! ** tayo!!!" (whatever that is) which is even longer with 188 pages long. My point is, unlike those threads, if you're not a part of any of those groups you can't really relate (may exclusivity in a way). But unlike here, everyone can relate to this and everyone is welcome pa.
