(that's how i'll call it) I think this 3 are the best talkers of this years semifinalist. SImply great hearing them talk during that portion. Thanks.

Hi power(bubbles)! :)

Here are their short speeches about themselves during the Fashion Walk...

South Africa- People often ask me why the judges chose me over other eligible delegates to represent my own country at the Miss Universe pageant. I replied, "I know what it takes, I have what it takes, and I'm willing to do whatever it takes."

India- Being a history student has taught me to cherish my past and move ahead into the future. In one word, I would describe myself as positive, because I always look at the sunnier side of life. I believe that if you smile your way through life, the world shall smile with you.

Canada- I'm an explorer. I want to explore different people, cultures and above all, myself. I've traveled to over 25 countries and through each journey I've noticed and celebrated the unique beauty of each people and the other countries. Tonight, I hope to share with you my beauty and the spirit of my country.

I noticed that with South Africa's speech and the way she answers her questions that she wanted so much to win - and she tried too hard.

Hi!

I just want to ask if the semi-finalists see their scores really appearing on the stage floor or were the scores were digitally added for television.

I wonder what Oxana would have thought seeing her whoping 9.88 and on the other hand Neelam with her 7.99 on the water.

It seemed like the top 5 knew who they were. Russia kept on pulling her gown after clapping during the announcement of the 5, though its inevitable since she topped the "Bluepoint Swimsuit and Fitness Competition."

The evening gown scores obviously appeared from the stage floor. However, the swimsuit scores were digitally added only for television viewers to see.

ang panget no pag halata *** lip liner...dapat kase #1 swabe *** color of the lip liner at ng lip color na ginagamit...#2 dapat bineblend in *** lip color with the lip liner mark...para magmukhang iisa lang ang kulay...ang purpose lang naman kase ng lip liner is to provide contour to the lips plus it will also help in the applying of lip color kase may outline/boundary ka na na susundan para di maglagpas lagpas ang pagapply ng lip color

Actually, alam mo ba na may paraan para hindi magsmudge *** lipstick...again it has to do with the application process uli

As for Ms Ghana...sana man lang naturaan sya ng kahit na basic make up skills lang kase medyo nakakahiya naman for a beauty representative to create such a booboo...parang nakaka-"unglamorize"...:ayaw:

Miss Germany Natascha Borger in her Franco Montoro evening gown during the Live Telecast.

Franco is the same guy who did Natascha's gown during the Miss Venezuela 2000 pageant, where she competed as Miss Yaracuy.

Franco is Venezuelan, but his style and creations are completely different from those of Jose Maria Almeida and Angel Sanchez... This only shows the diversity and wealth of Venezuelan talent and craftsmanship.

Thanks jensie. In my opinion if there wre an interview competition this year i believe this 3 girls might composed the top 3. they are just so eloquent. But on the other hand i don't find South Africa to be matapang or arrogant but very intellectual. Not only Vanessa but Neelam and Neha as well due to the British type of education that they've received and as well as the British influence. It really shows on this 3 ladies

FINAL QUESTIONS & ANSWERS IN MISS UNIVERSE

1969- Miss Philippines Gloria Diaz

Q: In the next day or so, a man will land on the moon. If a man from the moon landed in your hometown, what would you do to entertain him?

A: Oh, ah, it’s the same thing I’ll do. I think if he’s been in the moon for so long, when he comes over, he wants to change, I guess.

1973- Miss Philippines Margarita Moran

Q: Let’s make believe that all of a sudden you have a million dollars, what is the first thing you would buy and why would you buy?

A: A house and lot. Because it is the most expensive thing and I can’t afford it. If I have a million bucks, I’ll buy a house and lot and live by myself and other people, of course.

1983- Miss New Zealand Lorraine Downes

Q: Miss New Zealand, many Americans are curious about your country, why don’t you does tell us about New Zealand.

A: Well, New Zealand is a beautiful country, it’s a very natural green country. And if you like easy outdoor life, then you like New Zealand.

Q: And at home there in New Zealand, have you watched Miss Universe in CBS?

A: Well, I’ve been watching Miss Universe pageant since I was about 8 years old and I can’t believe I am here now in it.

Q: Miss New Zealand, have you enjoyed your visit to St. Louis?

A: Well, it’s been wonderful. It’s one thing never to forget. And the best thing of my visit has been the people here in St. Louis. They’ve been so friendly and they made even one feel so welcome.

1984- Miss Sweden Yvonne Ryding

Q: Should you be the new Miss Universe, you will become a symbol to young women and girls all over the world, what would you like to tell them?

A: Yes, I think I wanted to tell them that have their own personality, always try to stand on both feet on the floor, and try to..., well, I think that’s the most important, always stand on both feet on the floor, and try to do other people happy and ... help.

1985- Miss Puerto Rico Deborah Carthy Deu

Q: From your friends at home and your sisters contestants here at the pageant, you have an idea of what today’s young women want to say to the world. What message as Miss Universe would you want to give on their behalf?

A: I would like to tell everybody that they should really work hard, to try to achieve everything that they want to pursue and that always be very faithful and keep on working.

1987- Miss Chile Cecilia Bolocco

Q: What do you intend to do now that you have finished your study?

A: I would like to carry on now with my fashion designing. I would like to carry on with ballet dancing... classical ballet... and maybe marry and have a family.

Q: You’re going to be very busy?

A: I will take everything one at a time.

Q: Now, are you going to design clothing with your own line or are you going to work in a manufacturing?

A: I am going to do my own line because I have many original ideas. I don’t want to work in a company because they may change them.

Q: You are going wind up the interview with a commercial for your own line. You have to do it in English.

A: OK, next Christmas, ask Santa Claus to send you.. to give you a feather design by me.

1988- Miss Thailand Porntip Nakihurankok

Q: How did you get to be Miss Thailand from Pasadena?

A: Well, you don’t have to live in Thailand to be a Thai person. I hope I’ve set a good example for the Thai people in my country for I am a Thai person and yes, I did grew up in Los Angeles, but I am a Thai person throughout. And I live a Thai culture, and I speak the Thai language and I just want everyone to know that I am proud to be a Thai woman.

Q: Who first thought you your English?

A: My English? Well, English is loudly spoken at home, also Thai is loudly spoken at home so I kept my language. So I think I owe it to Big Bird. I watched Sesame Street a lot when I was a little girl.

Q: Now, I know that you have a charity project for Thai children that you work on it.

A: Yes, unfortunately Thailand is not only a beautiful country that rich in culture and tradition, but it has a problem too on our children. In fact, 10,000 of our children died last year of malnutrition, and I am hoping that as Miss Thailand I can make a difference for these children.

1989- Miss Holland Angela Visser

Q: If you have to describe the French and Dutch people, how would you characterize them?

A: Well, the Dutch people in comparing, for example, to the Mexican people, are a little bit more moderate. It doesn’t mean that they are not nice people, but I see here in a lot of Mexican, they have such a lot of temperament. Maybe inside the Dutch people have it too, but we kept it a little bit hidden. If I have to say more about it…. I love to live in Holland. We are a very peaceful country. We are a very peaceful people and I’ve been borne and raised there, and I love it.

Q: About the other candidates here, who would you say has the most different upbringing other than yourself?

A: Well, my childhood was very lucky. I have a great family. I love my parents and my brother, and I think what I’ve noticed about all these girls is that they are very lucky inside. And we discussed about different kinds of families they came from, and I would say maybe it’s Ms. Nigeria. I had a conversation with her in the bus and I was really like amazed because for example, she has to be home at 7:00 in the evening and we started dinner in Holland then, you know, so if you talk about those things that are completely different, so she’s happy the way she is raised and I think we all are.

1990- Miss Norway Mona Grudt

Q: If you are a judge tonight, who would you vote to be the new Miss Universe, and why?

A: I think it will be very difficult to answer that, but I think it’s Miss Finland. Because she is always in a good mood, and always kind to everybody and sharing somebody open arms when they are down.

1991- Miss Mexico Guadalupe Jones

Q: What is the most difficult problem facing your country today, and what do you think should be done about it?

A: Well, I think the most recently thing we have in the hands is the free trade we are working on it. I think it will be hard for my country because we have to compete with a very advanced technology from other countries that are richer than we are. But I know we gonna make it. I know we are a big country and our people are great, so I feel hope with my people.

1992- Miss Namibia Michelle McLean

Q: If you became leader of your country tomorrow, what is the first thing you would do?

A: I would speak to the children, tell them that I am there for them. Because they are the foundation of our every nations, and I like them to know that I am there for them.

1993- Miss Puerto Rico Dayanara Torres

Q: If you were to become Miss Universe, what is the single most important thing you would want to accomplish?

A: I think that we will have to work basing ourselves on our past to working hard in the present to provide for a better future. I believe that we should turn our energies to the children of the world to provide for them a better future because that is where our future lies.

1994- Miss India Sushmita Sen

Q: What, for you, is the essence of being a woman?

A: I think they know woman by itself the very fact that you’re a woman is a gift from God, which all of us must appreciate. The origin of a child is a mother, and is a woman. And a woman is one who shares love and who shares and shows the man what love, caring and sharing is all about. That is the essence of being a woman.

1995- Miss USA Chelsi Smith

Q: If you have a power to do anything you wish to improve the status of women in your country, what would you do?

A: Well, actually I think they’ve come a long way so far. I do wish that people will look at women as just the same as they look men, that is equally in power. I know a lot of women can do anything that they choose and I am one of those women, and there are 80 of those women that are here today. So I think women are doing very well, but I like people to treat them as they should.

1996- Miss Venezuela Alicia Machado

Q: What do you think men can learn from women?

A: I believe that they can learn very much because thanks to most women, men are here in this beautiful theater seeing this beautiful contest, and applauding me because I am a beautiful woman.

1997- Miss USA Brooke Lee

Q: If there were no rules in your life for one day, and you could be outrageous, what would you do?

A: I would eat everything in the world. You do not understand. I would eat everything twice.

1998- Miss Trinidad & Tobago Wendy Fitzwilliam

Q: A woman had just awakened after being asleep for 20 years. What you tell her she has missed?

A: Oh, she has missed so much in terms of technology. But unfortunately, she also missed the lack of sensitivity to our environment. She’ll miss now clean air, regular climates... that kind of thing. I will tell her that we have to... or I shall say in the process of turning around, that’s what she’s missing, in my opinion, fresh air, good clean earth.

1999- Miss Botswana Mpule Kwelagobe

Q: If Miss Universe would become pregnant during her reign, should she be allowed to continue as Miss Universe?

A: Personally, I think Miss Universe is a symbol of a woman as well as she celebrating her femininity. And I believe (thank you), I believe if she would found pregnant and it would not in any way interrupt her duties, I believe as a woman she should celebrate her femininity.

2000- Miss India Lara Dutta

Q: Right now, there is a protest going on outside here calling the Miss Universe pageant
disrespectful of women. Convince them that they are wrong.

A: I think pageants like the Miss Universe pageant, give us young women a platform to foray in the fields that we want to and forge ahead, be it entrepreneurship, be it the armed forces, be it politics. It gives us a platform to voice our choices and opinions that makes us strong and independent that we are today.

2002- Miss Russia Oksana Fyodorova

Q: What makes you blush?

A: When I say the wrong things.

Miss France 3rd RU 2002 Emmanuelle Jagodsinski

HEIGHT: 5 feet 11.5 inches

Hi there!

I'm just not so sure about Lupita's height... but I estimate it to be around 5'6"-5'7".

Yeah, Anjanette was supposed to represent us in Miss Universe 1991 but was stripped off the Bb. Pilipinas UNIVERSE crown due to conflicts regarding her citizenship and residency. She could have given Lupita a real run for her money. Anj had a perfect command of flawless English and had the body to die for. Sayang nga talaga.

Lara, this answers your question...

Miss Russia Oksana Fyodorova is indeed on the topmost row!

It has been a curse in Miss Universe (even in Miss USA and Miss Teen USA!)... The winning candidate is either standing on the topmost row or sitting/standing with a part of the body submerged on the pool's water... Tested and proven na ito!

I even encircled Oksana para makita niyo... :)

Sour graping as it may sound, a friend of mine who also happens to be a pageant freak/analyst said that our country could have made it to the MU2002 Top 10 had Sherlyn Ram been sent instead... "Mas bibilhin daw ng judges ang beauty niya" coz part-Indian daw... Eh "we all know naman daw na hot sa Miss Universe kapag may Indian blood daw"... Take the case daw of Miss Canada Neelam Verma...

I agree with you. But 1991 was really Lupita's year based from what i've heared. But i think the Philippines will be better off if Patty Betita was sent to Miss Universe instead of Alou Gonzales. I think even Selina Manalad will be an excellent delegate to Miss Universe that year.

Yeah! I really dunno why Madame Araneta chose Alu to go to MU91. Andyan naman sina Patty and Selina...

Ang labo kasi ng Bb. Pilipinas Charter eh. It states there na the 1st runner-up is not necessarily elevated to the next level in case something happens to any of the Big 3 winners...

When Tisha Silang gave up her crown on March 26, 1998, Jewel Lobaton assumed the vacated post. As we all know, Jewel was that year's 1st runner-up...

But then, the next year when Janelle Bautista met the same fate, Miriam replaced her. She was Bb. Pilipinas World as we all know...

So ang labo di ba? Walang clear rule on what to do in such a situation... Anything goes palagi kaya walang consistency...

(Well of course, no regrets siyempre on Miriam taking over... hehe)

Patty would have been a good alternative for 1991. For the 1998 edition, I wish they sent Collette Centeno instead of Jewel Lubaton. A little polishing lang and she could have stood a chance.

Other Filipina delegates sent to Miss Universe aside from Alou I regret:
1. Liza Berroya in 1992 - she does not have it.
2. Dindi Gallardo in 1993 - after Bb. Pilipinas, she lost her magic. If Ruffa were sent, talbog niya sina Colombia and Venezuela.
3. Perfida Limpin in 1988 - Anthea Robles na lang sana ang sinali natin. Her exotic Asian look could have made its way in the Asian Top 5.

Liza Berroya won only coz of her brains. She was a MENSA member back during her DLSU days... As we all know, pag MENSA member ka, all-around yung utak mo di ba? hehe. Saka I have lotsa DLSU-Main friends who got the chance to see Liza up close... Hindi naman daw stunner eh... Ordinary lang daw...

Dindi really lost her magic. Sayang. Do you remember her famous Close-Up TV commercial? "There's something on your cheek..."... Ang ganda niya dun! hehe! :)

Pebbles Asis could have been the perfect Filipina rep for Miss Universe 1988! She joined in the wrong year! With her stunning Oriental looks and height (5'10"), she really could have been in the MU88 Top 5... She could have given Porntip the ride of her life...

Yeah, okay lang. Competitive na yan. Her composite average is 8.056. She was #12 overall.

Miss Taiwan ROC Tzui-Pin Wen, who was #11, had a composite average of 8.070.

The preliminary 10th placer was Miss Turkey Julide Ates. Her composite average was 8.090.

So as you can see, hindi naman nalalayo si Gem. Too bad nga lang she failed to make the cut because of her not-so-impressive interview score.

I agree with you with Collette but she was only 17 at that time. In short hindi siya pwede. I think Rachel Soriano would've been an good alternative to Tisha. And i think she could've easily knocked off Ms. Ireland Andrea Roche of the top ten.

In my opinion we would have been better of in Miss Universe if we sent the following girls.

1991 - Patty Betita or Selina Manalad over Alou Gonzales (another why was she sent)
1992 - Marina Bennipayo or Marilen Espino instead of Liza Berroya
1993 - Ruffa Gutierrez or Ana Gonzales over Dindi Gallardo
1995 - Supermodel of the World 1993 Semi-finalist Lorena Pangan instead of Joanne Santos. (a really big mistake that they chose Joanne over the statuesque Lorena made me wonder 6 years after Joanne's victory. I think even sending Snow Tago to Miss World was a mistake where we could've send Caroline Pobre another tall and exotic looking lady)
1996 - Though Aileen Damiles was ok, i think Yedda Mendoza should've competed in Miss Universe.
1998 - Rachel Soriano instead of Jewel Lobaton (wonder what prompted Stella to send Jewel)

I have a question. What if Cara Subjiano was sent to Miss Universe '94 and Charlene to Miss World '94? What do you think would've happened?

1995- How about Gladys Dueñas? Maganda rin siya ah! She has that exotic look that could easily give Miss South Africa the shock of her life and displace her from the Top 10 in Namibia.

1996- Yeah, Yeddah's also a good choice... I wonder why Daisy Reyes got into the Top 3... Anna Marie Craig is a better alternative too! She looked 90% Latina and 10% Filipina...

RE: Gladys was just alright for Miss International were she was a semi-finalist. So it was ok for Glady's to be placed for International. No regrets on that part.

In 1994 every delegate sent to World, Universe, and International were the right girls to the respective pageants so no change for 1994.

I like Anna Craig. But from what I heared she wasn't witty. I think her weakness was her interview. But i think the placements for 1996 should've been like this: Universe - Yedda, World - Aileen and International - Daisy

Elsie was ok but i think she has poor interview skills which would kill her chances. And with regards to Collette joing the pageant in 1999 i think it'll be difficult for her since 1999 was a very strong batch. We have Miriam, Lalaine and other beautiful and gifted girls of 1999. So i think 1998 was really the right year for her.

Additional. other disappointments of the Philippines to Miss Universe

1970 - Simonette De Los Reyes over Aurora Pijuan. I think if AuAu were sent, Marisol Malaret will have a really hard time winning the title.
1976 - Dolly Ascalon should've been sent to Miss Universe instead of Lizbeth de Padua.
1978 - Any other girls who were beautiful? I think 1978 was a waste.
1981 - I think Maricar Mendoza was ok for Miss Universe but i think we could've been better off with Peachy Sacassas (not sure of the spelling)
I don't know of any girls could've been better than the winners of '82, '83, '85. As what i heared Alice Dixon was only 16 that's why she wasn't chosen for Miss Universe. Though I heared that Maria Isabel Lopez was a UP student at the time of her joining the pageant.

Hello!

Yes, Jensie, those were the Iva Lamarao pics I was looking for. Thank you for the nth time. Hay naku sayang talaga! Sana striaght na lang din yung hair niya sa headshot. although i must say na her curly haired looks grows on you.

Wow! Globalbeauties included Miss Portugal on the National Costume award. Actually I like her costume, though mukhang witch costume, pero ganda niya talaga. If only Iva Lamarao was in the top ten, she could have rivaled Arianna David as my all time fave delegate. Hehe, lamang lang talaga si Arianna dahil nag top ten siya.

Regarding doon sa humihingi ng photo ng gown ni arianna, marami ang naghahanap niyan dito, myself included. anyway, if i do find one, i'm sure i will post it here.

another request.

can anyone post a picture of denise quinones in the preliminary evening gown competition last year. kahit yung picture na hawak niya yung kanyang photogenic trophy. basta yung naka gown siya with her hair up.

and also, does anyone have a high-res pic of oxana in her gucci gown?

thanx in advance.

I read somewhere that Aurora Pijuan was originally crowned Bb. Pilipinas Universe in 1970 but Stella Araneta twisted the rules a bit to guarantee Aurora victory. She knew that the chances of a back to back victory are very slim and so the trading of places. But look at Aurora Pijuan - she was crowned Miss International in one of the easiest victories ever. : )

Thank you very much!

Si Cara naman, with her 5'11.5" height... pasok talaga kahit saan. She's a real stunner!

Tama ba? Nachika lang sa akin ng friend ko eh.. parang hindi ako sure. Yes, its true that she got a 2.00 from a certain judge. I believe the judge punched the wrong key. It wasn't intentional. Sobra naman siya kung ganun. I think it was supposed to be an 8.00 Pero I couldn't remember if she finished last in the semi-final interviews. JENSIE, please confirm. :)

Thanx!

Hi twisted1982! :)

baby_boi is correct. Sirio Maccioni punched the wrong key indeed and it wasn't really intentional. It was supposed to be 8.00 all right.

The very same thing happened to Miss South Kerishnie Naicker a year earlier. A judge punched 2.00 but it actually meant 8.00. Kerishnie's interview score finally appeared on TV screens and it was a 9.02. Hindi naman aabot ng ganun kataas yun if 2.00 nga ang isinama sa computation, di ba? Nagkamali lang for short.

I hope that answers your question. :)

Miss Malaysia Lynette Ludy Mei Ling (3rd from the left) works as a flight stewardess for Malaysia Airlines. This year's rep, Karen Ang, is also a flight stewardess for the same airline. Malaysia surely loves sending stewardesses to Miss Universe! :)

If Singapore wants to make it to Miss Universe, it should send a flight stewardess from Singapore Airlines! Believe it or not, SIA requires them to maintain a 26-inch waistline! Contractual sila with the airline-- nakalagay sa contract na if the waistline exceeds the required limit, tanggal na sila sa trabaho. Kaya if you guys noticed, sexy lahat ng SIA stewardesses! Saka malalaki pa ang boobs! hehe! :)

1. South Africa
2. Russia
3. India
4. Puerto Rico
5. Nigeria
6. Germany
7. Venezuela
8. USA
9. China
10. Colombia or Portugal

Sorry to all the fans of Ms. Philippines, I don't think Ms. Philippines will make the cut considering there was a new mode of choosing the semi-finalists using paper votes and not electronic scoring, she's not a stunner, although she has a great body as seen during the Swimsuit. I think she'll just be a wallflower come pageant night. She really reminds me of Lorena, aka "Niknik", Simang's daughter in Sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan

6 out of 10 ain't bad, of the 6, 4 were finalists

I should have learned my lesson that when a Puerto Rican wins Miss Universe, her successor will fair poorly, take the case of Dayanara and Brenda Robles, now Denise and Isis.

Wrong choice for black candidates, bakit kaya walang black this year considering na madaming maganda blacks sa batch na to.

As for Ms. USA, I didn't expect her to follow the footsteps of Kimberly this soon, in ten years or more baka pwede pang maulit pero not this soon.

Did you know that… :)

…even though Puerto Rico has never won the National Costume Award itself, it has won the Congeniality Award in 1957 and the Photogenic Award in 1999, 2001 and 2002.

…in 1967, Miss Puerto Rico Ivonne Coll, lent Sylvia Hitchcock, that year’s Miss Universe pageant winner, the evening gown in which she was crowned.

…Marisol Maralet won the pageant using a fake hairpiece…in reality, she wore her hair short.

…Miss Puerto Rico 1975, Lorell Carmona and Miss Puerto Rico 1984, Lourdes Mantero, got sick a couple of weeks before the pageant and were not able to be interviewed by the judges. Both of them were there for the final night only.

…in 1987 Puerto Rico did not have a local pageant, and they chose Laurie Tamara Simpson, a finalist from the 1986 pageant,
as Miss Puerto Rico. She was fourth runner-up in the Miss Universe pageant, Miss International 1987 and Nuestra Belleza 1991.

…Miss Puerto Rico 1991, Lisette Bouret was informed that the Miss Universe pageant would be held in Russia, and learned the Russian language to perfection. A couple of months afterwards it was announced that the host country had changed and it would be held in Las Vegas.

…Miss Puerto Rico 1995 Desiree Lowry was totally against using exaggerated ornaments on her head as part of her national costume.

…three Miss Puerto Rico have participated in the Miss World pageant: Ana Rosa Brito Suarez in 1993/Miss Universe 1997; Joyce Marie Giraud in 1994/Miss Universe 1998; and Sarybel Velilla in 2000/Miss Universe 1996.

…Zoraida Fonalledas, Miss Puerto Rico 2000, created a foundation that helps non-profit organizations and charities.

...Manila beat the city of Istanbul, Turkey to host the Miss Universe 1994 pageant. The Miss Universe Organization, together with the official station CBS, greatly considered convenience for all televiewers, especially those in the New York area. The Live Telecast was on May 21, 1994 at exactly 8AM, Manila time. It corresponded with the 7PM-New York prime time schedule.

...Sun City, South Africa was the original proposed venue for Miss Universe 1996. However, due to the low ratings the Namibia pageant received, MUO decided to look for a more attractive venue... It landed in Las Vegas, which earlier hosted the pageant in 1991.

Miss Venezuela Lucbel Carolina Indriago Pinto in her Esclava Manumisa national costume during Miss Universe 1999. The dress, which was inspired by African slavery, was awarded the 1st runner-up prize during the National Costume Presentation Show.

The dress was designed by Jose Maria Almeida. It has 20,000 crystals. 170 meters of fabric were consummed. It weighs around 30 kilos (66 lbs.) Anthropologist Isabel Aretz did a research on the costume.

Since Donald Trump is handling the Miss Universe pageant and Julia Morley the Miss World Pageant, here are my suggestions on how BPCI can help themselves in dealing with the 2 front-running international contest...

10. That it's high time to change the MNC sponsor Unilever to either Colgate-Palmolive or Proctor and Gamble to differentiate it fromother local pageants like Mutya ng Pilipinas and Miss Philippines.

09. That it's high time to deviate from the traditional pageant production to a modelling tilt production so that the ladies can be at par in the Miss Universe and Miss World Competition.

08. That it's high time to get really stunning ladies from the batches of Elite Model Look Philippines circa '98-'99 and Supermodel of the World Philippines circa '99-2001 to be able to enter to the top 10.

07. That beauty is more important than brains and those who can speak English - besides we can still use an interpreter and still land in the top 10

06. That it is better to get a lady who is statuesque and stunning and have graduated from a British or an American university as compared to a lady who graduated summa cum laude with just a pretty face

05. That the panel of judges should be composed of beauty connoisseurs - fashion designers, fashion directors, magazine editors, and recent beauty queens who made it big in their competition - not sponsors because of vested interests (AND IT HAPPEN ALWAYS).

04. That we can use Colombia for having arrange our national costume, but to save money it is high time to use our local designers (unless BPCI wants to monopolize the gowns with their outdated evening gowns courtesy of their boutique or a yucky gown by Pitoy Moreno)

03. That investing in a modelling school - like Cal Carrie's or John Robert Powers - here in the Philippines for a longer grace period is better than training in Venezuela for a shorter period (crash course)

02. That Julia Morley and Donald Trump are looking for ladies with supermodel qualities and sports illustrated figures.

01. That it is high time that Pitoy Moreno be removed from the BPCI Executive Committee and include Joey Espino and Rene Salud to the team.

Hi Carlene! :)

Thanks for posting this here.

I strongly agree with #s 9,8,7,5,3 and 2. In fact, I couldn't agree even more!

However, I strongly disagree with #6. Having an American or British degree tucked under your belt isn't everything. It does not always guarantee success. It's an added plus though...

It's useless naming names within the BPCI Executive Committee... After all, it's still Madame Araneta who has the last say... Ask Lara_D for more details.

What do you think about these instances? Do you think they would land in the top 10?

1. What if in the early '90s (1991 or 1992) Nanette Medved, for her Latina look, represented the Philippines in the Miss Universe pageant?

2. What if Ana Marie Gonzales was Bb. Pilipinas-International 1993 instead of Sherylle Santarin?

3. What if Lorena Pangan competed for the Miss World pageant or the Miss Universe pageant?

4. What if Yedda Mendoza competed in the Miss Universe, Ailleen Damiles in the Miss World, and Sonia Santiago in the Miss International pageant?

5. What if Abigail Arenas competed in both Miss Universe and Miss World?

6. What if Rachel Soriano competed in Miss Universe, Collete Centeno for Miss World, and Esabela Cabrera for Miss International?

7. What if Joanne de Mesa, who applied for Binibini but was not included in the official listing yet emerged as a semifinalist in Supermodel of the World 2000, was chosen to represent the Philippines in the Miss World, given that Miriam was alreday Bb. Pilipinas-Universe, and Lalaine Edson as Bb.Pilipinas-International? How about Evita Bunyi if not Joanne de Mesa?

8. What if Nicole Hofer was chosen to compete for Miss International, Nina Alagao for both Miss World and Miss Universe?

9. What if Joey Mead was not rejected to the official list and competed for the Miss Universe, Michelle Reyes for Miss World, and Maricar Balagtas for Miss International, with Zora Andam as still for Miss Tourism World?

10. What if there was no pageant for 2002 and shuffled former binibini queens - Collete Centeno for Miss Universe, Nina Alagao for Miss World, and Rachel Soriano for Miss International?

QUESTION FOR THE DAY: If Assunta de Rossi had not gone as a bold star, do you think she should compete for the Miss Universe pageant now that to be able to enter the top 5 one must be able to do well in swimsuit and evening gown in the semifinal round?

Hi again Carlene! :)

Here's what I think...

1. Nanette Medved is a superb choice! She really should have competed in Bb. Pilipinas during the early 90's.

2. Yeah, Anna Marie Gonzales should have been sent to Miss International '93 instead. Sherylle was intelligent and pretty, however, she doesn't have the "X factor"...

3. Lorena Pangan was one of the "elegantly-wasted" beauties during Bb. Pilipinas '95. At 5'11", she could have given other delegates in MU or MW a run for their money. Too bad she didn't win. She could have fared well-- especially in Miss Universe!

4. Yedda is stunning indeed! However, Aileen still has this look na pang-Miss Universe... Even if her Photogenic Award victory was online-based, she truly deserved it. Daisy Reyes should have been sent to Miss International coz mas bibilhin ang beauty niya dun! Don't forget na she stayed in Japan for quite some time before coming home for Bb. Pilipinas '96. Saka dig ng Hapon ang ganung look ng Pinay.

5. Miss World '97 was a truly competitive year. I believe Abbygale will still not make it. Susan Jane Ritter also has this "pang-Miss Universe" look. Sexy siya!

6. Esabela Cabrera is the perfect choice for Miss International '98!!! I agree with you all the way!!! However, I believe Colette would be better off to Miss Universe. Sexy siya and sultry-- 2 characteristics that MUO thirsts for... Bagay si Rachel sa Miss World. No regrets about that.

7. Yeah puwede si Joanne de Mesa. She's tall all right! Evita Bunyi is also an excellent option. With her 5'11" height measurement, I'm sure she'll put on a good show. Saka Evita has the looks. I still don't understand why Georgina Sandico was chosen. She doesn't have the "it" in the very 1st place.

8. No I don't agree with Nicole Hofer as your choice for Miss International. Filipinas Gabriel or Gemma Heaton are the perfect options for Miss International. Jamine Esperat is perfect for Miss World.

9. Yeah, Joey Mead would surely bag the Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2001 crown had she not been excluded from the pageant. No doubts about that. Zorah Andam will be for Miss World and Lara Quigaman for Miss International.

10. Yeah I agree. Puwede. Colette is really ideal for Miss Universe.

:)

Guys, tanong ko lang. What happened to the Miss Maja International Pageant? I remember nagkaroon ng search for BB Pilipinas-Maja in 1995 pero wala na'kong nabalitaan. I can still remember Joanne Alivio nga ba yon who won 2nd runner in Miss Maja 1989. She was so pretty! She was called Maja Filipina by the judges. There was a song number before they announced the winners...yung apat na nasa final five ang likot...umiikot-ikot parang di mapakali...yung Filipina delegate just stood poised and all-smiles. I love her!

Miss Jamaica Universe Sanya Hughes in an Uzuri gown

Pulse-very proud of Miss Jamaica Universe

The Editor,

Pulse, organisers of Miss Jamaica Universe, is very proud of Sanya Hughes, Miss Jamaica Universe 2002. Pulse feels all Jamaica should also be as well. Despite not making the top 10 of the International Pageant last Wednesday, Sanya was an instant favourite as well as a great ambassador for Jamaica from the time of her arrival in Puerto Rico on May 10th. She was regularly featured on the main website for beauty Pageants --globalbeauties.com as a leading favourite for the title and went into the Coronation Show on May 29th at a nione to one favourite.

Sanya shone throughout her stay in Puerto Rico maintaining her vibrant personality, naturalness and composure, features which, when combined with her stunning good looks, endeared her to contestants and national directors from around the world. For the first time (early in the live coronation telecast on May 29th), contestants were asked to say who their choices were for the title as well as best personality, most photogenic and most athletic. Close to a billion around the world saw Sanya hailed as the most nominated contestant, receiving multiple nominations in three of the four categories.

Sanya's campaign might have suffered from poor timing. After five years of black, Indian and Puerto Rican dominance (winners Miss USA, Miss Trinidad and Tobago, Miss Botswana, Miss India and Miss Puerto Rico), the competition went almost completely white this year with a heavy emphasis placed on European countries. Miss Russia's coronation coincided with President Bush's new treaty with President Putin in Moscow. Panama and China (top five finalists) will host the Pageant in 2003 and are bidding for 2004 respectively. Albania (also a finalist) was a first time entrant and top 10 countries such as Canada, Cyprus and Germany returned 'beauty' respect to those parts of the world after years in the wilderness. A White South African and representatives from traditional beauty powers India and Venezuela rounded out the top 10. That left no space for Jamaica, Nigeria, the Dominican Republic or Columbia, all beautiful, all black and all heavily touted going into the final night.

This analysis might seem overly cynical, but a Miss Universe Pageant held in the Caribbean without a black or Caribbean semi-finalist is undoubtedly a slap in the face to the region.

Although the world's major beauty pageants have displayed varying doses of political considerations at one time or another, national directors for Miss Universe will have to decide when this becomes too much. 2002 was clearly such a year. However, through it all Sanya shone brightly. As P A Chin from Toronto wrote in a letter to the editor...

"On day two of the contestants' arrival in Puerto Rico, this is what was reported: 'the most beautiful faces we've seen so far included Puerto Rico, Canada, Jamaica, Mexico and Columbia.' 'Jamaica was also mentioned as one of the head-turners at a formal cocktail party held last week. Then, Blue Point -- the official swimwear company of the Pageant in Puerto Rico, selected 10 girls of all 75 contestants, to model their swimwear at a premier fashion show. Jamaica was one of the selected models and the review went on to say: 'Along with Puerto Rico and Brazil, Miss Jamaica had the best figure yesterday. She is a pleasant surprise and cold be a top 10 finalist.' Another review went on to say: 'Miss Jamaica keeps competing strongly with her lovely personality and beautiful face'."

It is never usually the top favourite who wins these contests, usually there is a back runner who gradually races to the finish line and gets the tiara. Humility, intelligence and personality, together with a natural sweetness are key factors, in contests where there are many beautiful faces and racial types. True beauty is indeed mysterious. Good luck to Sanya, regardless of the outcome, you've represented the island well!"

note:
I understand why the other Carribean girls did not make the cut, Miss Curacao because of her gown, Miss Dominican Republic because she just didn't shine, Miss Puerto Rico, self explanatory, but I just don't get it why Miss Jamaica failed it? I would easily replace thunder thighs Miss India for Jamaica.

I hope Pulse sends Sanya to Miss World 2002. Don't forget that this island has won 3 Miss World crowns since 1963... I'm pretty sure Sanya can take it all!

May I add that the word uzuri is Swahili for "beautiful".

Uzuri International is a major sponsor for both the Miss Jamaica Universe and Miss Jamaica World pageants. Mark McDermoth and Karl Williams are its designers.

I love her!

Hi carlos! :)

The Miss Maja International pageant no longer exists. The last time it was held was way back in 1995. Its name was even changed to Miss Maja del Mundo that year!

Yeah, BPCI held a separate pageant to select the Miss Maja '95 representative. That year's winner was Tiffany Sayson Cuña. She made it to the Top 15 in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico that year.

Correction... Joanne Alivio was NOT our representative to Miss Maja 1989. Our representative was Jean Therese Hilario. Jean won 2nd runner-up.

Joanne Alivio won Bb. Pilipinas INTERNATIONAL 1992. She competed in Miss International 1992.

1. What if in the early '90s (1991 or 1992) Nanette Medved, for her Latina look, represented the Philippines in the Miss Universe pageant?

nanette medved was interviewed before and she was asked if she had plans of joining beauty pageants or modeling competitions..

ang sagot niya, maraming nagkukumbinsi for her to join a modeling contest. more so when abbygale arenas won supermodel of the world-philippines in 1992, who according to many people looked like her. but she always got cold feet, since she was already starting to do movies then.

:)

Hey Jensie. Though I agree with most of your post I have to disagree about numbers 5 and 4 respectively. I think Abby will make it to Miss World if she was sent that year. Look at this, Miss Australia Laura Csortan was 13th at MU97 and Abby was 11th. So I think Abby had the upperhand over Laura.

With reagrds to number 4. Though I Aileen was excellent for Miss Universe, Yedda has more charm, intelligence and beauty. Also I prefer her body over Aileen.

With Lorena she will surely make waves in Miss Universe or Miss World. With her experience as a semi-finalist at th 1993 Ford Supermodel of the World competition, she'll surely do well in the pageant. No doubt on that.

It's rather obvious that Madame Genevieve de Fontenay's Miss France Organization is more prestigious than the Miss France World Pageant. I read before during the selection of Miss France 2002, it was talk of the town. The Miss France Organization is easily getting high praises and recognition among the French. And look at Miss France World (whoever she is), she does not have the same aura and elegance that the Miss France Universe winners usually have. Maybe except for Miss France World 1998, the girl from Martinique, but the representative back then also came from Madame Genevieve's Miss France.

Madame Genevieve's Miss France Organization is more than just a beauty pageant. I believe it was able, through time, to transcend the purpose of its existence. Kaya a lot of people in France really look up to it.

What I know is Lalaine was elevated to the Bb. Pilipinas World position. Since the Bb. Pilipinas International post was vacated, BPCI then turned to 1st runner-up Michelle Arcangel. Pero hindi siya puwede coz she was already 25 then. 23 is the age limit for Miss International. BPCI then turned to the 2nd runner-up, Joelle Marie Pelaez. For some unknown reasons, Joelle declined.

That was when BPCI turned to the remaining semi-finalists. Georgina was chosen because she was #6. Gets?

oo nga noh! *okay*

Btw, just want to share...I saw Tell the People on ANC yesterday and they're talking about beauty pageants again...they guested Nina Ricci Algao and the three reigning Bb. Pilipinas queens and Pitoy Moreno. I think Julie Yap Daza commented that usually, all the queens BLOOM after their reign. As in, they get prettier and prettier. Also, when asked about Nina being asked to join a pageant again, she said that she wouldnt think about it. One experience is enough.

Tapos (this is my personal opinion), I find Katherine so fakish in smiling...she's the one who's projecting the smile a lot and its kinda irritating coz she gives a Cheshire Cat's grin e...pero she got a tan na (part of the preparation daw) so she's not milky white as before (but i think i like her being milking white more)

They also confirmed that they got training abroad (Colombia perhaps) and they (Katherine and Kristine) has just come back from abroad not long ago.

Ang reason nga pala ni Pitoy kung baket laging foreign designer ngayon *** kinukuha for the making of the gowns e para raw maging "global" *** perspective. Whatever that means.

Im not sure if someone in this board has commented this (or sa ibang board) but tama nga, parang lahat e ginagaya kay Miriam Q *** look ng mga rep natin and I think Pitoy confirmed this saying that, yes, we usually patterned our rep from the past winners of Ms Universe. Kaso, ang hindi lang yata nya makuha e...e baka di naman bagay dun sa rep natin *** look e kaso pinagpipilitan ba. imo :D

watching tell the people, it's easy to see why karen lost in the miss u. wala siyang appeal/X factor talaga, physically. she's not pretty. ok, she's pretty, but not semifinalist-pretty. the three reigning queens were there, naka-gown and crown pa talaga. nina alagao was also there very casually dressed, but she was the loveliest for me.

jullie asked how the titles are assigned. pitoy answered na they brief the judges daw on what intl pageants are looking for. bb. p-u daw should have personality, bb. p-w daw should be very tall, and bb. p-i should be pretty, the traditional beauty, yung with blue eyes. so sabi ni jullie dapat daw kristine should wear blue contacts. i wonder what kristine was feeling that time. based on pitoy's answer, dapat tigbakin na talaga siya sa binibini. napaka-archaic ng pananaw ng taong to. tall daw for miss world e si priyanka 5'6 lang.

Yeah, Zorah also told me na Madame Araneta wants tall girls for Miss World. I dunno why pinagpipilitan ito. Aishwarya Rai and Jaqueline Aguilera (two of the loveliest Miss World titleholders ever) are both below 5'9" if I'm not mistaken. "Height is not always might"...

Shocked ako sa remark ni Pitoy na "blue eyes" ah... No comment na lang...

In my opinion, here are the BEST SONGS ever used in Miss Universe:

1. Would You Go? by Touch and Go (MU2002 swimsuit song)

2. One More Chance by Julio Iglesias Jr. (MU99 evening gown song)

3. Same (Ashley Beedle's Front Afroart Vocal Mix) by Smith & Mighty featuring Tammy Payne (MU2001 evening gown song)

4. Flying High by Byron Stingily (MU2001 swimsuit song for the Mediterranean beauties during the Presentation Show)

5. Limbo Fire (MU99 swimsuit song)

6. Everybody Have Fun Tonight by Wang Chung (MU87 special number)

7. Forest Hymn by Deep Forest (MU95 evening gown song)

8. All My Life by K-Ci & Jojo (MU98 evening gown song)

9. Where Do I Go From You? by Jon Secada (MU95 special number)

and

10. You Are My Star by the Little Sisters (MU88-MU94 evening gown song)

:)

P.S. Guys, I strongly suggest you download Days Go By by Dirty Vegas. Bagay na bagay ito sa evening gown competition ng Miss Universe. I hope they use it in the near future.

It was a good thing that I logged in before 7 pm because I was able to watch the replay of Julie Yap Daza's "Tell the People. " I have to agree with MingTsai's remark that Nina was the loveliest among the queens. It was rather obvious that they mainly talked about the Miss Universe pageant, rather than the other two. And I quite laughed when Julie asked Nina why she did not make the cut back in Cyprus - of course we know the answer, thanks to Stella being an authoritarian- of course she cannot say that, so she just said it was just tough luck.

The 3 queens were really stiff, while Nina was relaxed and natural but still poised. I think when you're wearing those darn crowns, you can't really move. They just really bloom after giving up their crowns it seem. Kate Manalo looks good with her new tan, I think she would have been a good representative for Miss Universe - if she had her tan and if she didn't have those "Neha" thighs!!! Too bad... if ever she was the one to be sent to Puerto Rico, Neha and Joseane Oliveira (Miss Brazil) would have a stiff competition on who has the biggest thighs. And yeah, her smile was kinda stiff and fake looking.

I did not bother to see the show til the end because the last parts were quite boring. And yeah they Pitoy Moreno's comments seemed like talaga "pinagiwanan na ng panahon" he looked like he was still living in the 60's. They're really so freakin outdated. But honestly i think, Pitoy was just a cover up. Unknown to many, Pitoy does no longer have any power whatsoever in Bb. Si Madame Stella nalang talaga. HOw do I know this? Modesty aside, my mom knows Pitoy - and she told me wala na talagang paki si Pitoy sa Bb.

Well Aishwarya is 5'7 but i think Jacuqeline is 5'9 as what was said when Miss Venezuela was televised here in Manila. If you look at the current Miss World trend tall Supermodel type girls rule.

I think it's not only in Miss World where they have the Supermodel type girls, it's rather obvious that in the past 2 years, Miss Universe is incorporating the runway type of competition - so medyo related sa pagiging supermodel. And this year, I just forgot how many girls who are 5'10 and up, I know more than 20 sila. This is that batch with the most number of tall girls!!! Tingnan mo nagkatotoo ang hinala ko na si Shauntay was eaten alive by the tall girls.

I could no less agree with you. In the past 2 Miss Universe yes Supermodel type girls lands in the semis. In Miss World I have to say its been longer when the Supermodel type of women landed the in the semi-finals.

These are some of my questions in mind regarding Philippine beauty pageants...

1. Why are there so many special awards to be given?
Though there are a lot of sponsors needed by the event, why is it that there should be one for every sponsors. Miss Universe, Miss World, and Miss USA doesnt cater to giving a gazillion of special awards unlike Miss venezuela and Miss India. the question remains with a why.
Suggestions: Just give out at least 7 special awards: Miss Photogenic, Miss Friendship, Miss Talent(Like BPCI), Miss Style, Best in Swimsuit, and Best in Long Gown.

2. Why do we have to have the modelling of the longgowns and the swimsuit of all the candidates on the finals night? Cant we just have 2 Saturdays to show the preliminary judging and the finals para hindi masyadong dragging.

3. Why is it on the top 10, tanging q&a na lang ang pinapakita? Don't you think its unfair ang ganitong setup? I only see Miss Philippines doing such kaya lang dragging kasi sa situation sa number 2.

4. Should Unilever judges take a major say in the contest? There are instances when deserving girls competing were not able to land on a good spot because of conflict of interest. As well, nondeserving girls land on a goodspot because of conflict of interest. instance: Bb.Pilipinas 1993.

5. Why is it that of the three pageants, binibini is already losing its touch and prestige? Is it Stella Araneta? Is it Pitoy Moreno? Why can't they get a good batch of ladies just like 1993, 1994, 1996, 1999?

6. Who among the mutya candidates lastnight has a chance to vie for binibini next year?

Hi there Carlene! :)

It is true that our local beauty pageants (specificially Bb. Pilipinas) give away TONS of special awards... Miriam Quiambao categorized these awards into two: special awards and corporate awards...

The special awards are those given by BPCI itself:
-Best In Swimsuit
-Best In Long Gown
-Miss Friendship
-Miss Talent (1st and 2nd runners-up positions included)

The corporate awards are those given out by the major sponsors:
-Miss Close-Up Smile
-Miss Lux Super Rich Standout Beauty
-Miss Creamsilk Beautiful Hair
-Miss Pond's Rosy White Skin
-Miss Philippine Airlines (formerly Miss PAL Sunniest Personality)
-Miss Myra 300-E Inner Beauty
-Miss Agfa Photogenic
-Miss Yehey Internet
-Miss Avon
-Miss Red Bull Supreme Energy

This year, the Miss Universe pageant started giving out only 3 special awards:
-Arpeggio Photogenic Award
-Congeniality Award
-National Costume Award (1st and 2nd runners-up positions included)

I contacted the Miss Universe Organization and they confirmed that Clairol Herbal Essences is no longer a sponsor of theirs. This explains the sudden disappearance of the Style Award this year.

The Miss World pageant gives out 4 special awards:
-Miss Photogenic
-Best Dress (This is the counterpart of the National Costume Award in Miss Universe)
-Hawaii Pacific University Scholarship Award (it was 1st given out last year)
-Miss Talent (I believe this award was also a new award which was given out last year)

Aside from this, the Miss World Organization also awards the top performers of each continent/region. It gives out the:
-Asia's Continental Queen of Beauty
-South America's Continental Queen of Beauty
-North America's Continental Queen of Beauty
-Caribbean's Continental Queen of Beauty
-Oceania's Continental Queen of Beauty
-Africa's Continental Queen of Beauty
-Central America's Continental Queen of Beauty

The Miss International pageant gives out only 3 special awards:
-Miss Photogenic
-Best In National Costume
-Miss Friendship

Hi again!

I agree with your comments in #s 2 and 3. They should do that para hindi nga dragging pag coronation night na.

I also agree with #4. A perfect example is the reigning Bb. Pilipinas World Kate Manalo. She joined the Bb. Pilipinas 2001 pageant. However, since she was a model for Sara Lee back then, she had to pull out from the pageant. Why? As we all know, Sara Lee is a big rival of Avon, a major sponsor for Bb. Pilipinas.

Yeah, Bb. Pilipinas seems to be losing its touch. The quality of its candidates seems to be deteriorating too.

However,I disagree that it is losing its prestige. It still is the most prestigious beauty pageant in the land... Hawak pa rin nito ang franchises for Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss International... It still has presitge, grandeur and class written all over its face with these 3 important and anticipated beauty pageants on its hand...

The MISS WORLD USA 2000 pageant was indeed a memorable one... :)

http://www.tftj.com/archives/Miss/World00/WorldLocals/US/MissWorldUS00.jpg Angelique Breaux won Miss World USA 2000. She represented the United States in Miss World 2000, where she was a semi-finalist. She earlier won 2nd runner-up in the Miss USA 1999 pageant, where she represented her home state of California.

http://www.tftj.com/archives/Miss/World00/WorldLocals/US/abigailroyce.jpg Abigail Royce was Angelique's 1st runner-up in this pageant. As we all know, Abby competed in the Miss Earth 2001 pageant, where she was a semi-finalist.

http://www.tftj.com/archives/Miss/World00/WorldLocals/US/janellebautista.jpg Janelle Delfin Bautista was a semi-finalist in this pageant. How could we forget Janelle? She was earlier crowned Bb. Pilipinas Universe '99. Unfortunately, she had to give up her crown and title after figuring in a citizenship and residency scandal after she was discovered to have possessed a tampered Philippine passport.

http://www.tftj.com/archives/Miss/World00/WorldLocals/US/feilanibennett.jpg Feilani Bennett was also a semi-finalist in this pageant. Feilani was also crowned Miss Asia USA 2001. She was almost included in the official Bb. Pilipinas 2002 roster. Unfortunately, she had to withdraw due to conflicts with her citizenship and residency.

When Aileen Damiles, Daisy Reyes and Yedda Mendoza wore the new Bb. Pilipinas crowns I knew something wrong will happen to Philippine pageantry. The crowns are MALAS. Bb. Pilipinas has turned from BAD to WORSE The crowns carry webs of misfortune. We better change it before it's too late:

We have not won a single MAJOR world title! and...

a. 1996:Yedda should have been sent to Miss Universe, Anna Craig to Miss World and Aileen Damiles to International
b. 1997:Abbygale Arenas missing the 10th spot to a not very outstanding Indian delegate; Bob Mackie gowns did not help Abby or Kristine to the top 10. Pre pageant favorite Susan Jane Ritter misses Miss International 2nd runner-up position by One Vote.
c. 1998: How can Tisha Silang win? Jewel Lobaton was not supported well by BPCI in Hawaii, had to run for Larry Espinosa for help but she was reprimanded by Pitoy, et.al Colette Centeno missed Miss International 2nd runner-up position by hairline. Rachel Soriano did not place.
d. 1999: Someone gets dethroned again. Miriam misses Ms Universe title by a hairline. Venezuela had no effect on. Lalaine. 1RU Michelle Archangel is pregnant (she gave birth in November 1999) and overaged for Miss Intl (24). Joelle Pelaez refused the offer because she is busy with other things. Non finalist Georgina Sandico takes over. Notable delegates like Anna May Corveau, Joanna Paula ABinuman and Evita Bunyi did not make it to the top 10.
e. 2000: Everybody expected Nina Ricci to shine but she fizzled. Annwen and Joanna did not place.
f. 2001: Zora could only snatch a Best i Costume runner up position. The wrong girls end up winning the major titles (With the exception of Zora, Maricar Balagtas should have gone to Miss International and Michelle Reyes to Miss World--clearly, Tolosa and Quinzon should not have been in the top 10). And what happened to Imee Su Martinez and Precious Lara Quigaman in the top 10?
g. Nobody world-class qualified to be candidate. Worse, Pitoy took over and look at the Miss Universe results.

Someone has to buy the BPCI franchise or simply take over. Jensie is the most logical successor of Madame Stella. Or the PEXers from this forum should take over. I am sure Philippine pageantry will be alive and well again.

I praise you for this post. Those crowns, aside from looking tacky, were signs of bad times in Philippine Pageantry.

The next "new crown" question is:

Will this hold true for every Miss Universe starting with Oxana Federova?

Hi there jj9527! :)

Thanks! haha! I'm flattered and honored... Pero that's way too much... hehe! And besides, it would definitely be a team effort since marami magagaling at may alam dito sa thread na ito. :)

Thanks for this informative post. Thanks for posting it here.

Here are the "cursed" Bb. Pilipinas crowns, as you put it... hehe...

You're right. 1996 was the year when these crowns were first used by Bb. Pilipinas. Leng, Yedda and Daisy were their first bearers.

TRIVIA: The Bb. Pilipinas World crown is the MOST EXPENSIVE of all 3 crowns. Sorry I can't post its value here. hehe.

BONUS PIC: Here's the Miss Philippines Tourism World crown that was awarded to Zorah during the Bb. Pilipinas 2001 pageant. I believe Zorah is the 1st ever woman in Bb. Pilipinas history to be crowned twice in one pageant coronation night. As we know, she also bagged that year's Bb. Pilipinas Universe title.

Yupyup! :)

20 na si Cynthia tomorrow!

Yeah, it's ironic to note that Eva Ekvall was only 17 when she was crowned Miss Venezuela and 18 when she competed in Miss Universe... yet she really looks thirtysomething na...

I think it's not the crowns fault why we stink in the Big 3. Jensie and I can give you a lot of reasons why the Bb. Pilipinas stink, and that's not because of the crowns fault. In other words, Bb. Pilipinas is being run by people who are obsolete and out dated. I really admire the people who run Miss Universe Japan, they have become modern and are not the conventional Japanese Pageant prganizers (take note: the very obsolete Miss International). It's rather obvious that their winners are competitive and very hip looking. Basta they know how to prepare their girls, who would think that Miss Japan would be one of the most stunning Asian delegates this year? Her wardrobe is very fashionable and very stunning. If you compare the wardrobe of Miss Japan Universe and the gowns of Misses Japan World and International (with their so usual obsolete flowery Cinderella gowns), Miss Japan Universe looks so hip - not the conventional Japanese beauty queen.

A shot of the super weird Señorita Colombia crown...
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant428/pageant428_image2.jpg

It's the most important beauty pageant crown in Colombia. It's considered a symbol of beauty, power and prestige all in one...

:)

P.S. What's with the cross? It looks more like a crown of a Pope or King during the 15th-17th centuries. hehe!
