Yeah, sayang si Renette Cruz... ang bababa ng prelim scores niya eh... way lower than those of Aileen Damiles...

Do you remember that episode of Eezy Dancing kung saan nag-guest si Renette? Gumanda siya dun ha! :) No, wasn't able to watch that show when they had Renette Cruz. Is that show defunct already? Does Nina still host the show?

I don't see a hint of Russian in her National Costume. Iba pa rin yung costume nina Inna Zobova and Ilmira Shamsutdinova. And yeah, it looks daring. Tapang niya ha? Di kaya siya nasilipan? :teehee:

1996 pa yung episode na yun. hehehe! Sorry I forgot to mention it kanina... :)

Yeah I believe si Nina Ricci pa rin ang host...

Were you able to watch the episode last year when Zorah guested sa show? Kakabalik lang niya from Bayamon nun eh... Ang ganda niya sobra! Sinayaw nila ni Nina Ricci yung Uptown Girl ng Westlife.... Ang gaganda nila pareho! :)

Yeah pero putol eh... Di ko napanuod ng buo... Gusto ko nga bumili ng copy nun from ABS-CBN eh... Pati sa ABC5 for her Eezy Dancing guesting... :)

Martin interviewed Abbygale Arenas and Zorah Andam when they returned from their respective pageants. Si Miriam ay hindi na-interview coz si Jessica Soho na ang nag-feature sa kanya sa Brigada Siete a week after MU99...

Si Nina Ricci naman ay ininterview ni Boy Abunda sa The Buzz... kakauwi pa lang din niya from Cyprus...

I watched Abbygale's and Nina Ricci's interviews...

Sana i-interview din ni Martin si Karen! I'll watch out for that for sure! :)

Ey guys napanood ko kahapon si Miss USA 1999 Kimberly Pressler sa MTV Becoming Limp Bizkit. Guess what she was doing there?

She was playing hostess to the 5 guys who were supposed to become Limp Bizkit at the Playboy Mansion... heheheh :D

Tapos, nakita ko rin sina Joyce Giraud, Wendy Fitzwilliam, Ali Landry at Brook Lee sa Wild on sa E! They're all over these past few days, huh?

I just got back from abroad kaya now lang ako naka pag Pex uli. Too bad i wasn't able to watch Miss U 2002 pa, but after learning the winer and top 10 (no thanks to jensie kasi hindi ko siya macontact dahil "subscriber cannot be reached" palagi), I was quite surprised about the outcome. It was a good thing Cyprus made it the top 10, I knew there was something in her. Natawa nalang ako when I learned that USA and Puerto Rico were out of the top 10. hehehe But ang ganda nga ng winner. No regrets there... mas bagay sa kanya kapag yung Old crown and suot niya. Ang panget talaga ng Mikimoto crown. Ok... Pex nalang ako later, I haven't unpacked yet.

lalo si Ms. Greece 2001, evelina yata name… yan talaga yung maganda…

ang ganda rin kaya ni Ms. Cyprus... the smile!

my observations:

Venezuela didn't deserve a 4th runner up placing, and I must say she should've bagged at least the Evening Gown award. She was stunning and very confident (but projection-wise, Germany's wowed me). She deserved better. Her gown and projection was wow, even teh swimsuit!

What is Canada doing there?

India's wide hips hurt her scores...

China was witty, but it sure was politics that placed her there. Anyways it's nice to see an Oriental beauty make it.

Russia sure was deserving of the crown! congratulations...

Felt bad for Isis though. She had spark, she's not a bad successor to Denise for the Ms. Puerto Rico crown.

I didn't feel any hint of sympathy for USA. IMO she just isn't MU material.

Yeah, Venezuela should have placed higher... Pero she was visibly shaking during the Final Q&A eh... struggling to find the right words... Sayang...

Canada only got in because of her personality and interview... Remember her swimsuit performance? What was that bulging thing in her stomach? Eww... Major turn-off talaga!!! Hindi ka sigurado kung abs o alien na lalabas sa tiyan niya eh...

Aside from her hips, India was flushed out of the competition due to a poor, poor choice of evening gown... The color, the style, the cut, the accessories, her hairdo-- WRONG COMBINATION lahat... I ain't surprised with her placing...

Yeah China got in because of politics... but she gave a wonderful performance during the Live Telecast! Very witty for a first-timer! Yeah it is nice to see a beauty from the Far East sa wakas... India at Pinas lang nung 90s ang pasok na Asians eh... Let's see if China will be able to maintain a consistent record of making it to the Top 10 in the future... Let's see if it will be a mainstay like Venezuela and India...

Yeah, Isis should have been in the Top 10 talaga... Sayang...

Yeah, TRUE! I never liked her from the beginning. Pero she was soooo stunning! Ang laki ng improvement niya since winning the Miss South Africa crown last December... She kinda reminded me of Ali Landry during the Miss USA 1996 pageant. Ganun din yung dating niya eh. hehe. :)

I know she'll do well in Miss World 2002 come November...

Hi guys, I just wanna share na I just watched Karen's Presentation Show performances... She has great catwalk skills. :)

Okay yung performance niya sa evening gown! Kaya lang, sana hindi na siya gumamit ng hair extenders... In my opinion, panira eh... Masyado nang "over" eh. Sana yung simpleng hairdo lang.
The gown was great. She carried herself so well... And as usual, she got a thunderous applause.

Sa swimsuit naman ay okay din... Ang ganda talaga niya pag nakababa ang hair... Exotic! :)

You know whats one startling trait of Chinese --- being so hard to please! Lagi may reklamo..kahit okay na, maghahanap at maghahanap pa rin ng butas! Di kase uso sa Chinese ang praises kaya kahit maganda o okay isang bagay, may pintas pa rin! :p

May competition talaga ang mga provinces/regions sa China---one is always saying they are better than the other so Im not surprised that somebody from another region is saying they have the better girls..pero one thing's for sure, if you come from northerrn china, you're usually tall and with fair complexion that's why many models and beautiful actresses like zhang zhi yi etc come from there :winker:

She looked old dahil the makeup and the hair are really horrible! :ayaw: Ako nga hate na hate ko *** hair and makeup...actually pati gown di ko rin type PERO pag nakita mo sya sans the makeup (just like in the interview clips shown in between the show), pretty naman sya eh!:beam:

Maganda daw, in your opinion, what's your analysis about the Miss U 2002 production? It was really great.. Walang sinabi yung production last year. There were a couple of boo-boos from Phil Simms and Brooke Lee but were forgivable. It didn't matter because this year's production value was high. I think the major flaw of this event was Marc Anthony's performance. Last year's Ricky Martin was better. The opening number was great. The delegates were able to speak out loud their names and their countries. This was done in alphabetical order. Then we had Marc Anthony's first performance. They then announced the Top Ten delegates. What a surprise because the Tadashi Opening Dresses actually looked good on the delegates. Like in 1999, there were lots of surprises in the final 10. After that, they had a segment that showcased the delegates' catwalk skills. This is interesting production-wise because their opening number dresses perfectly fitted with the effects of the background in the stage. It seemed as if they appeared from nowhere when their countries' names were called out. Very unique.

Then they had the evening gown competition first. These delegates strutted their choice of gown. They entered in the left side of the stage. Then surprisingly, they didn't flash the scores in our television screens. And they didn't show the scores of each judges. Instead, they flashed the average scores in a floor made of glass or something. I'm pretty sure, the audience weren't able to see this. The winner of this competition was Miss Russia with a 9.64 followed by Miss China with a 9.15. Then came the swimsuit competition. They entered in the right side of the stage. There were like some smoky effect with a white background. You wouldn't actually see the delegate until her countries' name is called. You'd only see a woman's figure. Then they had to walk on a ledge with water beneath it. Running through it is a mini-falls. They wore the white bikini and a white, thin cape. Very nice!! After that, interviews with the rest of the delegates backstage. Then another Marc Anthony performance. Then the top 5 delegates were announced. The five finalists were asked about a question thrown in by their co-delegates. This portion was not judged by the judges. Then another round of Q&A. This time, its the final question. Host Phil Simms almost read the whole question to Miss Panama without having the remaining finalists to go to the earphone thingie. Major boo-boo. Then after all of the delegates have answered. Co-host Daisy Fuentes asked Miss Universe 2001 to have her final walk. Then the results were announced. They did it quite fast (just like in Miss USA). Then that's it.. Miss Russia was crowned with the Mikimoto tiara. :)

She's ugly? China's netizens think so...
By Xie Hong

The occasion called for a celebration. But many Chinese were not rejoicing that Miss China was the second runner-up in the Miss Universe pageant.

China's Miss Universe contestant Zhou Ling was "no real beauty" , claimed the disappointed netizens. -- AP
The fact that an entrant from China had come in among the top three was made all the more remarkable because it was the first time a contestant from China took part in the pageant.

But comments in Chinese websites moments after the results showed that many Chinese did not think she deserved the placing.

Their quibble: that 19-year-old Zhuo Ling is 'no real beauty'.

At China's leading Internet portal Sina.com, descriptions like 'ugly' and 'too old' were bandied about by netizens who were disappointed by the country's choice for the competition.

One posting said: 'She's so ugly. How could she have won the Miss China title? It's so disgraceful she has been sent to represent China.'

Neither did Miss Zhuo, a Shanghainese, get support from neighbouring Zhejiang province, which is famous for beautiful women.

A Zhejiang netizen said proudly: 'Just pick any girl on the street in Zhejiang, and I'm sure she'll be prettier than Zhuo Ling.'

Many also questioned her real age, saying she looked too old and mature for a 19-year-old. Some suggested she could be 29 or 39 and should instead be crowned 'Auntie Universe'.

But there were also postings that praised her fluent English and expressed happiness that she won honour for the country.

One said: 'I think she's very beautiful and graceful. She should be rewarded.'

Who do you think is better?

Sonia Raciti or Vanessa Carreira?
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant384/pageant384_image3.jpg http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant383/pageant383_image3.jpg

Sonia is half-Italian while Vanessa is half-Portuguese.

Sonia was Miss Universe 1999 Finalist and Miss World 1999 2nd runner-up. Vanessa, on the other hand, is Miss Universe 2002 3rd runner-up.

Since South Africa returned to Miss Universe in 1995, they were the only ones to make it to the Top 5.

Finally I was able to watch Miss U 2002 thanks to Jensie's tape. There's only one word to describe what i felt... tulala. This year's production was really one of the best!!!! Ang ganda nga ni Russia, though she has a similar walk like Evelina's they could not really be compared. And I think Evelina's bagging first runner up was already given justice because finally an Eastern European girl finally won. The Parade of Nations was really ok. Yeah I agree with a lot of people here that Miss France was really so elegant during the parade of nations. She was really elegant when she spoke. I really applaud Baby_boi's bet. Too bad nga lang na kung kailan deserving ang France sa top 10, wala sila. She was more deserving to be up there than Elodie. Nahalata ko rin na bubbly and funny (even kissing the tulips she was holding) si Miss Netherlands, halata naman sa Parade of Nations eh. Miss Brazil was also nice, lovely accent. Miss Japan was ok as well, with her matching pose with pamaypay.

Regarding the top 10, well it just goes to show na Miss USA is also vulnerable. Medyo humihina sila kasi after 2 years lang, wala uli sila sa top 10. Regarding the prodcution naman, ang ganda ng top 10 runway walk, na may pagka futuristic ang dating. Before the girl steps out, may parang laser thingy. The Evening gown competition was also nice, though slower than lasty year's, i liked it. It's still runway music anyway. Ang ganda. I liked it better than the swimsuit competition, though sana hinuli nalang nila yung evening gown.

Regarding the other top 10 delegates:
Miss Venezuela- she lacked the vavavoom Eva had. She has no spark. Though I like her "oooh la la" remark. hehehe
Miss South Africa- like the previous Miss South Africa's since 1998, she sounded too rehearsed, saka medyo arrogant pa ang dating niya. The girls from South Africa I think are beginning to be known for being too rehearsed and boring. yawn...
Miss India- isa pang too rehearsed ang dating. She does not deserve to be up there.
Miss Cyprus- at long last Cyprus finally made it. It was long over due. I knew it there was something in her.
Miss China- even yesterday pa when we had our stop over sa Hong Kong, her pictures were posted in a lot of Chinese newspapers. Medyo nagulat ako at first kasi baka political nanaman to. But she was deserving naman, she's bubbly and happy pa.
Miss Russia- wala akong masabi, tulala talaga ako. Ang ganda niya... but i think the old crown would fit her really well. She has a very lovely face as well, I think natauban na si Lara Dutta when it comes to having a striking face (compare their pictures). hmmm... I think i'll change my avatar na... hehehe

And it was nice na na-close up si Dayanara after Oxana was crowned. Halatang deja vu para sa kanya. Ganda pa rin niya.

Basta this year was waaaay much better than last year's. My final comment is, "L E C H E ang RPN 9." hehehe

Worth reading guys! I know that you will love this article about Miss Russia!

Don't tangle with her

ST PETERSBURG (Russia) - The cadets and officers at St Petersburg's Police Academy celebrated an unusual honour on Thursday - the crowning of one of their own as Miss Universe.

Miss Oxana Fedorova's victory - a first Miss Universe crown for Russia - led nationwide newscasts on Thursday.

They juxtaposed images of her in a white toga-like gown at Wednesday's pageant in Puerto Rico with shots of her firing weapons with perfectly manicured nails and walking in police academy halls, jet hair flowing over her drab green uniform.

Her biggest fan base is among police colleagues.

After graduating from a police academy in the north-western Russian city of Pskov, she worked as an investigator and is now seeking a graduate degree at the St Petersburg Police Academy in civil law.

Her dissertation is on regulating privacy and security activities, according to Mr Yevgeny Protsenko, head of the department where she studies and lectures.

'All her students liked her. We had big hopes for her victory, because she is such a purposeful, persistent and charming girl,' he said. --AP

Miss Russia as a Policewoman ...

Oxana says that firing weapons is a favourite pastime. She is well known for her speed at taking apart and assembling a Kalashnikov assault rifle. Mr Vladimir Salnikov, head of the Interior Ministry University, said Oxana was:"Physically in good condition... knows how to keep state secrets."

Miss Russia as a Beauty Queen ...

The 1.8-m tall new Miss Universe will take home prizes worth US$250,000 (S$445,500), promotional contracts and a scholarship to New York's School for Film and Television. She also wins a year in the Big Apple on a salary and with a luxury riverside apartment provided.

2 days delayed na ang balitang ito. Pero let's recall what's happened in the Miss Universe 2002 pageant.

Miss Russia wins 2002 Miss Universe title

SAN JUAN (Puerto Rico) -- Oxana Fedorova of Russia won the 2002 Miss Universe crown on Wednesday night, wearing a white evening gown and telling a roaring audience that she blushes when she says the wrong thing.

After the evening gown and swimsuit competition, the final five contestants were asked 'What makes you blush?'

'When I say the wrong things,' the 24-year-old from St Petersburg said, grinning to a raucous crowd waving American flags.

Miss Fedorova takes home prizes worth about US$250,000 in addition to promotional contracts and a two-year scholarship to The School for Film and Television in New York.

She also gets to spend a year in New York on a salary and is provided with a luxury riverside apartment.

Miss Panama, 22-year-old Justine Pasek, took first runner-up in the competition; Miss China, 19-year-old Ling Zhuo won second place; Miss South Africa, 22-year-old Vanessa Carreira took third; and Miss Venezuela, 19-year-old Cynthia Lander Zamora took fourth place.

Miss Russia, who also won the swimsuit competition in a white bikini, gasped when her name was called and last year's queen, Puerto Rican Denise Quinones, placed a US$250,000 crown of diamonds and pearls on her head.

The Russian beauty queen wants to be an attorney and become a mother. She is fluent in English and Russian.

Miss Albania, Anisa Kospiri; Miss India, Neha Dhupia; Miss Germany, Natascha Borger; Miss Cyprus, Demetra Eleftheriou and Miss Canada, Neelam Verma made it into the top 10 but were eliminated in the final round.

Miss US Virgin Islands, Merlisa Rhonda George, won the Miss Congeniality award, taking home a US$1,000 cash prize and a trophy.

Absent from the top 10 were Miss USA, 23-year-old Shauntay Hinton and Miss Puerto Rico, 21-year-old Isis Marie Casalduc, who was named Miss Photogenic, winning US$1,000 and a crystal trophy.

Contestants were judged in three categories - swimsuit, evening gown and the interview.

With acrobats dangling from a rope and fountains gushing streams of water on stage, Latin crooner Marc Anthony - dressed in a white suit and black sunglasses - performed two numbers in English.

The New Yorker born to Puerto Rican parents had wanted to perform a salsa number in Spanish but CBS wanted him to do two of his best-known hits, which are in English.

Former National Football League player Phil Simms and actress-model Daisy Fuentes hosted the contest at San Juan's Roberto Clemente Coliseum. Contestants from 75 countries and territories were competing.

Here's what happened...

Oksana Fyodorova was originally crowned MISS RUSSIA 2001 on April 16, 2001, Monday in Moscow.

The 1st runner-up was Oxsana Kalandyrets.

The 2nd runner-up was Tatiana Pavlova.

Since the winner, Oksana, had to attend to her studies at the Interior and Local Ministry, she just couldn't participate in MU2001.

So her 1st RU, Oxsana Kalandyrets, was sent to Bayamon instead. Oxsana made it to the Top 10 on May 11. She settled for 9th place overall.

The 2nd RU, Tatiana Pavlova, competed in Miss International 2001 in Tokyo, Japan in October. She won 2nd runner-up to Poland's Malgorzata Rozniecka.

Tapos Oksana was sent to MU2002 in San Juan early last month. She won Miss Universe 2002 last May 29.

What an inspiring story noh? Just like what baby_boi said before, "Patience is virtue"...

Oksana even encountered problems with her visa at the Los Angeles International Airport. Consequently, she was the very last delegate to make it to San Juan... Just as the famous saying goes, "Better late than never"... hehe!

According to a report in the MV MB, Justine's 1st runner-up victory in the recently-concluded Miss Universe pageant really "silenced" other neighboring nations like Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Brazil, who invest so much more to train their beauty queens yearly...

The Puerto Ricans were delighted with Justine's answer during the Personality Q&A, wherein she said she wanted to represent the "enchanted" land of Puerto Rico given the chance. This answer earned the instant admiration of many, most especially those watching in the Roberto Clemente Coliseum that night.

Yeah! I like Janjira's pose best! Ang galing! Saka mas maganda pala siya pag ladlad ang hair... Pag binanat, nagmumukha siyang older eh.

I hope Lada Aengchawadechaslip joins Miss Thailand Universe 2003! By then tapos na exclusive contract niya with Miss World Thailand.

They say in Thailand, "one girl, one chance." So i doubt if she would join again (but sana pwede). But the Thai people don't like her (like what my Thai friend told me) because she can't speak Thai, and that's an insult for them.

1. Germany - She has this "beauty queen appeal" I can't find in any other delegate. She is my "It" girl for this year's edition. In fact, I want her to win. If only she could change her gown to a better one come finals night.

2. Colombia - Whoever said that she is a Black Barbie is definitely correct. She is the first Miss Colombia since 1994 who made so strong an impact on me. And she has great clothes too. She must wear that red gown during the pageant.

3. Philippines - I have faith in this girl. She did not fail me during the local pageant. Great fashion sense. The white swimsuit really worked in her favor! And she has this Miss Philippines appeal I only found in Gloria Diaz, Armi Crespo, Desiree Verdadero, and Miriam Quiambao. This is the Miss Philippines the discriminating Miss Universe judge is looking for! And great legs too!

4. Curacao - Regal, serene, yet can be seductive in pictures. Great face with great skin. Much like Verna Vasquez of 1997.

5. Nigeria - Her country is fast becoming a pageant powerhouse! Agbani was just the start!

6. Puerto Rico - I like her better than Denise for being natural. And she seems unpretentious to me, too...

7. Portugal - Sweet girl. Not exactly pageant material but her simplicity is a welcome change.

8. South Africa - Rampadora! Great command of the stage. I'm eager to see her in action on pageant night.

9. Venezuela - Osmel made full use of his magic wand on this girl. I'd like to see her on pageant night with simple hair "down" style. From a mediocre sometimes ostentatious blondie to a brunette bombshell, she just might take it all.

10. Chile - Very appealing. Great gown, great projection. I wish to see her in full pageant action.

Anong nangyari sa akin??? 3 out of 10?!?!?!?

Hi there!

I understand how you feel. I can relate. Ako I only got 4 out of 10!!! This is the worst year in my life when it comes to Top 10 predictions...

Nung 2001, I got 7 out of 10. Misses France, Russia and Israel ang hindi ko na-predict.

Nung 2000, I got 6 out of 10. Misses Zimbabwe, Estonia, France and South Africa ang hindi ko na-predict.

Nung 1999, I got 9 out of 10. Miss Jamaica lang ang hindi ko na-predict...

Haay... every year Miss Universe just keeps on getting unpredictable...

Hi there!

Unfortunately, wala pang latest pic ni Kate na na-release. It's too early pa naman eh. She still has 5 long months to prepare. I dunno if the planned Venezuela trip will still push through. Let's just wait na lang for further announcements.

Hi there!

I heard about that too... Probably it's because of her 3rd runner-up placing in Miss Universe 2002. I'm not so sure though.

Remember Sonia Raciti back in '99? She made it to the Top 5 in Miss Universe but still went on to Miss World, where she eventually won 2nd runner-up.

If ever Vanessa won't get to compete in Miss World 2002, it's okay. Her 1st runner-up in her national pageant, Claire Sabbagha, is as stunning and charming as she is. South Africa has nothing to lose kung tutuusin. :)

Here's a shot of Claire Ann Sabbagha, 1st runner-up Miss South Africa 2002...

Hi there!

Greek's representative for Miss World 2002 is Katerina Georgiadou. She's 19 years old and stands 5 feet 9 inches.

The last time Greece made it in Miss World was way back in '96, and Irene Skliva even won the crown! So far, she's the only Greek woman to win in the pageant.

Let's all see how Katerina will do come November.

Though I initially felt upset with the Top 10, I still have to praise MUO and the judges for coming up with a fair line-up. :) This year proved that media hype (including new media such as the Internet) can never define a judge's standards. If not for "beginner's luck", I would be more convinced though.

Thank you Karen. You did great! :)

Well, I've been reading that the Puerto Ricans handled it well naman. I haven't heard about anything bad happening naman.

They're so proud of Miss Panama Justine Pasek on her answer during the Personality Q&A wherein she proudly said that she's willing to represent the "enchanted" land of Puerto Rico, if given the chance. A thunderous applause greeted her as a consequence of what seemed to be a spontaneous yet sincere answer...

I asked this because I wasn't able to watch the pageant pa. I was on vacation and I'm getting my copy tomorrow pa.

Bigla ko lang naalala nung 1993 when the Mexicans booed Miss USA Kenya Moore. Parang they were blaming her for taking the spot that was supposed to be for the hometown delegate.

:) Ah ok. I think its true that both Tin and Kate were in Puerto Rico because Jimmy was also there to give support to Neelam. Obviously, he wouldn't write it in his report if he didn't see them there. This guy is quite credible.

Newaiz, if its indeed true that they're goin to be trained in Venezuela, that's good news for Kate and Tin-tin. Because they have a lot of time to prepare and master their craft. I wish them good luck. :)

I just can't help but notice that unlike her predecessors where they really shined during their reign. Face the fact gumanda sila Denise, Lara, Mpule, Wendy, Brook, even Sushmita after they won. But when they were crowned they weren't really that stunning pa. But Oksana is a very rare case, her beauty is sooo natural at ang ganda niya na talaga. Look at her pic, and it seemed matagal na siyang nabigyan ng make over ng Miss U. Now that is real beauty - so natural.

The HIGHEST SCORING-EVENING GOWN in Miss Universe history-- UNBEATEN pa din!

Oksana may have beaten Veruska's 9.85 record, but she sure wasn't able to beat Carolina's 9.897 record...

Colombian couturier Jaime Arango designed this gown for Carolina Gomez. She was wore it as early as the Señorita Colombia '93 pageant...

9.10 SWEDEN Victoria Lagerstrom
9.07 ICELAND Solveig Gudsmundsdottir
9.05 PUERTO RICO Anna Rosa Brito
9.04 MEXICO Rebecca Tamez
9.04 USA Brooke Lee

***It is surprising to note that heavy favorites Venezuela and Trinidad & Tobago weren't part of the Top 10 in swimsuit! What a surprise!

***Notice Curacao and Italy's super consistent performance during the Presentation Show!

Here are the results of the preliminary interview competition held at a separate date from the Presentation Show:

TOP 10 in Interview

9.62 PANAMA Lia Victoria Borrero
9.59 TRINIDAD & TOBAGO Margot Bourgeois
9.56 USA Brooke Lee
9.50 VENEZUELA Marena Bencomo
9.45 COLOMBIA Claudia Elena Vasquez

9.37 CURACAO Verna Vasquez

9.31 PHILIPPINES Abbygale Arenas

***Panama's Lia Borrero tops this competition with a whooping 9.62! I believe that's the 2nd highest preliminary interview score after Paula Betancourt's 9.70 score way back in MU93.

***Sayang si Abbygale! She was even included in the Top 10 of swimsuit and interview! Too bad she didn't shine in her evening gown... She really could've been in the semi-finals. She was beaten by India's Nafisa Joseph by a hundredth of point! Abbygale was 11th overall.

Here are the Top 10 delegates (semi-finalists) and their composite averages:

9.420 CURACAO Verna Vasquez
9.333 PANAMA Lia Victoria Borrero
9.237 USA Brooke Lee

I find this very very strange...i made some research and I learned that shanghai is like part of zhejiang province!

Hi there!

Really? I'm not really familiar with any of China's cities or provinces. I just based my post on that article from the Singapore Straits Times. Feel free to fill me in.

some comments:

cathybee: correct, shanghai is a different province but it is north of zhejiang province. the province (with shanghai) as a whole was divided into different portions during ww2 (russian, german, american, british) all the more adding to the beauty of their people (aka marami nang halong dugo)...for more info, refer to spielberg's empire of the sun (also a book by j.g. ballard)

sinabi na ni phil simms na sa panama ang 2003 MU so.........

pageant review:

* the production this year was better, although something was missing.........did rpn cut some portions??? i thought ba't parang ang konti ng participation ng mga delegates? masmarami pa ang spiel ni san juan mayor kaysa kanila eh.

* also, nagmukhangdekorasyon lang talaga si brooke lee. i thought she and daisy should have done the usual side comments about their bets and the scores, ala julie moran and ali landry. that should have added more excitement. ang dry ng production, idagdag pa si phil simms (bring back bob goen!!!). pero the stage, lights, everything else was a-o.k. less cluttered and more focused on the delegates.

* the mikimoto crown is nice, although i still prefer the old crown. o well, let's wait and see if it grows on me....

* I LOVE THE OPENING NUMBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! brings back the electricity and excitement of 1999. (although the cyprus one was elegant, di masyadong exciting) 2001 was not good at all, for me.

* MISS RUSSIA rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!! She brought back the classic beauty queen look last seen in the early '80s! ANG GANDA NIYA!!!!! Justine Pasek winning would have been just another latina beauty, but Miss Russia IS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

* What's with Miss China's nanay look? During the delegate's choice segment where she was featured, she looked so pretty and fresh. What's with that losyang harido!!!!! INJUSTICE!

* cathy and jensie, may kalakihang taglay nga ang chest portion ni Miss Cyprus, pero mas pronounced ang cleavage ni Miss Germany at maspinangangalandakan talaga pati sa gown! Kaya para sa akin, this year's Kim Yee award still goes to Natascha....pwede na ring tie sila ni Miss Cyprus......

* I believe those were rock hard abs in Neelam's stomach, this year's Gul Panag awardee.

* I thought the delegates' questions being answered by the finalists portion was o.k., but wouldn't it be better for the delegates themselves to ask the questions para mas exciting and interactive? I mean parang mas may zest ang dating nun lalo na kung ang napiling candidate ng semifinalist ay, let's say, ayaw sa kanya........e di mas exciting!!!

* It's my 3rd year of 6 out of 10 predictions.
- This year, I didn't predict Albania, Cyprus, South Africa (I was stubborn, I knew she would be a shoo-in but I just didn't like her), and Russia, which is the BIGGEST BOOBOO. I'd rather have 1 prediction coming true and that prediction goes on to become the winner than have 9 out of 10 and have the missing candidte winning. GRRRRR. I totally snobbed Oksana....

- Last year (2001), I was also a 6/10 with Russia, Israel, France, and Nigeria. Although I thought Agbani would win Miss Photogenic.

- Like Jensie, I also thought Estonia, France and Zimababwe would make the 2000 cut. I thought S. Africa would make it, but I thought bubbly girl Kim Yee wouldn't. also a 6/10.

- 1999 was a better year for me as I had an 7/10. I overlooked all the black semi-finalists - Misses Jamaica, Ghana, and Botswana.

* If Lorena of Spain competed, nakapasok malamang yun ng Top 10. At baka una na naman siyang tinawag (ehehehe)

* I think Miss USA didn't make it becuase of her too-musculine figure. Neelam's disastrous swimsuit acore affirmed that. Sana si Shauntay na lang nilagay nila instead of Neelam.

* I was kinda relieved not to see Miss Colombia and Dominican Republic on the Top 10. I found Miss Colombia's head too small for her frame and Miss D.R. was way amazon-ic for Miss U.

To commemorate this thread's 130th page, two trivia items:

- Jensie was the first pexer to respond to Altwegg's question, which is better, Miss Universe or Miss World. Jensie, posted Nov. 18, 2001.

-This thread had to be bumped by cmars Nov. 20. To think that currently, this thread hasn't moved from page 1 of the Movies and TV thread list. Amazing, indeed.

Watching Miss U between catnaps

DIRECTLINE by Boy Abunda
The Philippine Star 06/03/2002

In between bouts of narcolepsy, half awake and half human, at 9 a.m. (sinfully early for someone like me who retires at sunrise), I thought – or rather, I was sure – that everytime I opened my eyes I was watching the Miss Universe 2002 being beamed live from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

I would catnap during commercial breaks. By the time I would wake up I could not tell Miss Universe from the commercials. One second, I thought Marc Logan (Grabe! Puting imposible, sa Tide posible!) was co-hosting with Miss Serapio, the school teacher "na matibay ang pinagsamahan with Standard Electric Fan."

I would fall asleep again until I heard someone knocking – and when I opened the door – who would it be but Diether Ocampo with new American Classic from Pizza Hut. Then I heard someone say, "Di ba tayo malulugi dito? Hindi, hindi! We’re not going to lose. It’s good business. Can’t you see? I’m working so hard." I screamed and I woke up to the announcement of the 10 semi-finalists.

I liked Miss Russia , Miss China, Miss Panama and Miss South Africa – Miss Philippines was not mentioned. Oh, well, what’s new? I yawned and consoled myself Miss Philippines must have been number 11. Besides, there will be another one next year and hundreds of Miss Gay beauty pageants in between.

I fell asleep again as the commercial break started. I swear I saw a man sipping a cup of hot Campbell soup. "Hmmm, good. I feel better." I just smiled at him. Anyway I was asleep. And then I heard familiar voices. Lani Misalucha, Janno Gibbs and Vina Morales were asking me to lean on them. "Why?" I asked. They just smiled. I simpered. "When you need a friend, I’ll help you carry on." "How sweet," I muttered.

And suddenly, I saw some feet in Darlington socks, that said "sa bawat hakbang mo." And then proud AMAers appeared. But even before they could tell me why they were proud, a mob of happy converts were chanting "parami ng parami ang bilib sa tigasing – speed sa kaputian." Silly, naughty, little me thought they were talking about something else.

But before I allowed prurient thoughts to distract my somnolent state, I saw Martin Nievera simply, amazingly smart with the longest human line holding hands behind him. Then Tin-Tin Bersola suddenly appeared with the number one exfoliant Exoderm that refreshes her face. Bernadette Sembrano and Cristina Pecson seconded Tin-Tin’s testimony.

Perhaps realizing I was in deep slumber, I had to be told again that "this program is brought to you by Rejoice, HSBC, Kodak, Max Factor." And that RPN is the exclusive station for the Miss Universe 2002. But how many times do you tell a moron this? I started to complain until I woke up again during the Q&A portion. I noticed my dream-catchers hanging quietly from the ceiling. I said "Thank You" for driving away nightmares. I rejoiced with Rejoice at the next portion – tried hard to open my eyes and ears, not wanting to miss out any word from the finalists.

I think the idea of having each contestant write a question was brilliant and truly interesting. At this point each finalist was made to pick one question from a bowl. Miss Panama got the question from Miss France.

"If you were to represent another country, what would you choose?"

"Puerto Rico… because I’m at home here," elicited screams from the Puerto Ricans.

Miss China picked her own question. She had to pick one again. And this time she got the question of Miss Nigeria.

"What is the biggest misconception about your country?"

"That the Chinese people are traditional, quiet, etc. Look at me," vivaciously declared Miss China.

Miss South Africa got the question of Miss China.

"If there is one weakness you need to overcome about yourself, what would this be?"

"I’m very critical."

Miss Venezuela picked the question of Miss Belgium.

Miss Russia got the question of Miss Costa Rica.

The five finalists in this year’s Miss Universe were all deserving. Unlike in other years when there would be some finalists who would surely be beaten black and blue in a Miss Gay contest in Malabon. All of them were pretty smart.

It was time for another break. I decided to stay awake because the first commercial was The Philippine Star ad, "the only paper you read from cover to cover. And truth shall prevail." I decided to take a cold shower, took my sweet time, sang Wildflower – "Let her cry, for she’s a lady, let her dream, for she’s a child – let the rain fall down upon her, for she’s a free and gentle flower growing wild." Then, I went wild with Kahit Isang Saglit – still under the shower enjoying the lather of Lush natural soap. Feeling like Miss Universe, I tried singing "Ikaw Ang Miss Universe sa Buhay ko!" I realized I was repeating the lines over and over because I didn’t know the song. I ended my bath with a promise in my heart that it was going to be a beautiful day.

By the time I got back to watching TV, the final Q&A had not yet started. The commercial break didn’t look like it was going to stop.

"Ok, fine," I told myself! It’s going to be a nice day.

Right after being challenged to "Take the Nestea plunge," it was finally the final Q&A.

The question was, "What makes you blush?"

Here are what the finalists said:

Miss Panama – "When people compliment me."

Miss China – "Right now!"

Miss South Africa – "When people make fun of me."

Miss Venezuela – "Oh lala! When people say something cute on me."

Miss Russia – "When I say the wrong things."

I loved the final question. I thought it was politically correct compared to questions about the Middle East conflict and America’s war against terrorism or Bono’s debt relief crusade.

I also thought that Miss Russia, hands down, deserved the $250,000 Mikimoto crown. I think the whole universe agreed.

My answer to the final question "What makes you blush?" When someone asks me, "Game ka na ba?"

To those who have a copy of Miss Universe 2002... please watch the coronation segment again!

Shortly after Oksana was announced as the winner, she accidentally grasped Denise's left breast. To make up for it, she obviously apologized by whispering something shortly before Denise put the Mikimoto crown on her...

hello pexers! hehe, it's been a while.

isa lang ang masasabi ko to the new miss universe --- congratulations, you deserve the crown. i love that gucci dress, very elegant.

anyway, ang ganda talaga ng pageant this year. i really liked albania and cyprus. at grabe si cyprus noong swimsuit, feeling ko talaga is magpapakita na ang kanyang mga physical endowments habang naglalakad siya. and to miss albania, i adore your gown.

also, thank god hindi nag top ten si shauntay. hehe, obviously, i'm a lindsay douglas fan. if kansas won miss usa, siguradong makikipaglaban siya sa mga puti this year. ang with her slim and tall structure, for sure, shine siya.

to musique: i think scott grossman is the man who was carrying the flowers come announement of runner-up and miss universe. and if i'm not mistaken, siya rin yung may hawak ng earphones ni miss russia. pero, i am not sure.

'MISSES' WHO WERE HITS
by Henrique Fontes

BRAZIL - Dil Brasil, webmaster of Misses do Brazil, considers Joseane Oliveira to be Brazil's best representative since another Oliveira: Adriana, 3rd runner-up in Miss U 1981. A favorite until the night of preliminary competition, Joseane was a victim of an awful dress (same old story) and poor guidance by her country's organization.

COLOMBIA - a regal beauty considered by many as the best South American in 2002. She was the Webmasters' pick and should have placed higher.

CURACAO - one of the best figures and most stunning faces in this year's pageant. Her gown choice was criticized.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - A huge press favorite, Ruth's downfall was probably adopting an old fashioned beauty queen style. Even Osmel Sousa (Miss Venezuela director) knows that that type still works only for few national Latin pageants…

ESTONIA - this sexy blonde had a remarkable and very original evening gown presentation.

FRANCE - the most elegant delegate in the competition. Heavy make up made her look older and probably took some precious points from Silvie Tellier. This Michelle Pfeiffer look-alike had the most stunning pair of eyes in the competition.

GHANA - Stephanie's regal runway skills and beauty made her a favorite since the very beginning. GREECE - one of the most beautiful in the pageant. She overdid the 'Evelina walk'.

JAMAICA - with a flawless preliminary presentation (both in gown and bathing suit) and a perfect face, it is difficult to understand how Sanya missed the semis.

JAPAN - Mina probably missed a spot in the top 10 by very little. She had beauty, intelligence and one of the most fashionable wardrobes.

NIGERIA - this African queen was included in most experts' top 10 lists. She was GB's Face of the Universe 2002. Miss Nigeria will compete in Miss World in Lagos, where she will have a fair chance to achieve a back-to-back victory for her native land.

PHILIPPINES - simply the best in evening gown. Karen was also one of the friendliest contestants in this year's group.

PORTUGAL - beautiful face and perfect body. Portugal became some sort of "sentimental favorite" for pageant fans in recent international pageants. Iva was no exception.

SINGAPORE - the biggest surprise in the preliminaries, Miss Singapore could have easily been a finalist, especially after her glittering gown presentation (photo).

SLOVENIA - even most other delegates considered Iris to have the best figure in the pageant. Her evening gown was also one of the best (incredible improvement from last year's "super hero" fiasco).

SPAIN - an unconventional beauty whose performance in the gown competition was among the best.

nakuha ko to sa global beauties, i just felt like posting it because of the review about karen... grabe kahit hindi siya nanalo, i'm still so proud of her. simply the best in evening gown daw o... ang galing niya!

He's the guy who gives the Hoya Crystal to the winners of the special awards. He's also the guy who held Oksana's earphones. He's the same guy who gives the flowers to the newly-crowned Miss Universe...

Hi there! :)

Here's a shot of choreographer Scott Grossman as he presents a Hoya Crystal trophy to Miss Bahamas Nakeria Simms as she was announced winner of the Congeniality Award during last year's Live Telecast on May 11, 2001.

Here's another shot (front view naman. hehe) of Scott as he escorts Miss India Celina Jaitley moments after she was named 4th runner-up during last year's Live Telecast on May 11, 2001.

Zorah, just like the rest of the 76 other delegates, got a chance to meet up and be with Scott. According to her, he's "sweet and kind".

***Aside from choreographing steps for the film Miss Congeniality, Scott also choreographs for the annual Miss Texas USA pageant every July, Miss USA pageant held annually during either February or March and the Miss Teen USA pageant held annually during August.

Here's your request...

Augustine Masilela was the 1st South African to compete in the Miss Universe pageant after an 11-year absence. Prior to her participation in Miss Universe '95, the last time South Africa joined the pageant was in 1984. In 1985, it was refused entry due to the rising apartheid and racism in the country.

Here are Augustine's shots while in action during Miss Universe '95...

Philippines - Of course this list wouldn't be complete without her. I know she is not one of the most beautiful out there but she has class. I am confident that she will make it this year.
Nigeria - Nigeria is the new African beauty pageant powerhouse. I just love how the swimsuit look on her.
Colombia - Over-hyped perhaps? But she really deserves a spot in the top ten at least.
Dominican Republic - One of the prettiest faces this year, I know she will make it to the top.
Chile - Lonshot, but she has the makings of a Miss Universe. I wouldn't be surprised if she makes it to the top 10.
Portugal - This girl reminfd me of Olivia Williams. She may not have the beauty queen aura but I think she really is pretty.
Curacao - My number one pick, Curacao has the makings of a beauty queen. I've never really read anyu interviews of her. I just hope that she has the brains. I remember in 1995 or was it 1996, when Miss Curacao scored high in the prelims but she just didn't do well in the interviews in the semis.
China - She can make it.
Korea - This year is the year of the Asians. She is stunning yet casual. Sexy yet girlish. I just simply love her.
Greece - I always believed that last year's Miss Greece really won that crown. Even though she is not as pretty as last year's representative, I think she too can make the cut. I just love her evening gown

*fingers crossed for Karen*

Though there was only one bet that I would like to see in the top 10 and that was Miss Cyrpus, and she did make it and I'm quite content with the wild card of mine. hehehe
