Ay naku, ayoko na talaga. For three straight years, the Philippines sent strong candidates na hindi pinapasok sa Top 10. I am not satisfied with the Top 10, especially when I see undeserving girls in it. Colombia and the Philippines should have entered the Top 10.

No offense colombia lovers pero maganda sya talaga kaya lang patagal nang patagal parang nakakasawa *** beauty nya...(Im gonna duck just in case ive been thrown with stones and sticks...) imo lang ha...as for venezuela...hay naku, alam naman ng regulars dito na wala talaga akong bilib sa beauty nun...pero patagal nang patagal...may mga angle talaga sya na ang ganda ganda nya pero ayoko pa rin sa kanya ha...i still think last year's bet is more of a babe than her! :D
Hmm...I dont know...I also felt Karen wont make it...sabi nga nila guru Jensie at Lara (shucks I forgot who said such) na sana she should opt for a one piece swimsuit ...oh well...pero she got good reviews so at least, she exposed the country in a way na rin..at least her charm will go us good kase people will get to know that our country has nice people and stuff...baka in her small ways, makaboost pa ng tourism natin! whew! lakas ko mangarap! :D

feeling kasi siguro ni isis siya ang last na tatawagin, kasi si denise yung last na tinawag last year.
why does oxana remind me of amparo muñoz???? most probably because of her smoky eyes and hair.....
question: why are this year's candidates exageratedly well-endowed?????
jensie ano sa tingin mo sa mga awards na ito:
the kim yee award: miss germany (big momma)
the gul panag award: miss canada neelam verma with her amazing abs tied with miss albania and her one piece

...just my honest opinion....
Miss Russia deserves the crown. (Probably one of the most beautiful Miss Universe to date)
Miss Panama doesn't deserve the 1st runner-up...should have been Miss South Africa.
Miss China...very lucky...but her answer was not impressive.
Miss Venezuela...too confident..good for her.
Miss Philippines.....better luck next time.
Miss India.....come on....is it because of her sash? she doesn't deserve to be a finalist anyway....
Miss USA.....hey , this is Miss Universe..not the Olympics, ok? (blame it to the Miss USA judges):bah:
Marc Anthony....holy cow.....he is OVERRATED! Martin Nievera is WAY BETTER than him.
Noticed that black judges especially Tyrese were not smiling?
well.as usual..these black judges were not happy because there were no black finalists......see how they controlled the Miss USA pageants?...black judges= biased judging..:furious:
Good thing the pre -pageant has different judges than the pageant night or else..siguradong may itim na finalist naman .
now..sino ang may sabing "Beauty is only skin deep?"

First of all, lemme begin my post by saying that Oksana really, really deserved to win! She had it! Congrats to her and to Russia as well! Finally we have a European Miss Universe after 12 long years... :)
Secondly, I wanna thank AgnasKa and augustus_caesar for providing the thread with all the details and accounts of the pageant as it took place LIVE a while ago. Thanks, guys! We appreciate it! :)
Thirdly, I was impressed with the production this year! Now I truly feel that we are indeed living in the 21st century! Wala akong masabi sa stage, sa scoring display, at sa stage effects! Kudos to MUO!
Fourthly, I'm disappointed of course that Karen didn't make it. God obviously has other plans for her. Nevertheless, she still carried herself extremely well and represented our country the very best she could. Congrats Karen! You're still a winner! The fact na you're there in San Juan, you're already a winner. You've come a long way! From the Miss Wellcom pageant to the Miss Universe pageant! Whoa!!! :)
Lastly, I wanna say it was surely one hell of a horse race! Sobrang taas ng competition level ng mga delegates this year. Nahirap talaga ang marami na pumili ng mga bets nila-- isa na ako dito! :)
Until then... Let's all keep this thread alive until Miss Universe 2003!!! :)

Miss Venezuela Cynthia Lander-- the 19th consecutive Venezuelan to make it to the Miss Universe semi-finals...
Honestly, I was impressed more with Cynthia's beauty (per se) than I was with her catwalk skills or stage presence... She doesn't have the finesse and perfection of Eva and Minorka... Pero she's still as stunning as them! She truly looks a lot like Claudia Moreno! :)

Here are some facts regarding this year's Top 10 semi-finalists...
1. Miss Albania Anisa Kospiri- Kudos to Albania and Anisa for joining the Miss Universe pageant. I was so shocked the very first time I heard this Mediterranean country was sending a rep for MU2002... Unknown to many, Albania is a predominantly-Muslim country and yet it has the charming and "surprising" Anisa as its representative!
2. Miss Russia Oksana Fyodorova- A year's preparation surely worked perfectly to Oksana's advantage. After missing Bayamon last year in favor of her studies, here she is... Russia's 1st ever Miss Universe... the 1st European Miss Universe in 12 long years... Oksana has the body to die for! Flawless! Her catwalk skills and stage presence are exceptional! She also has this personal sense of style innate in Europeans... truly captivating!
3. Miss South Africa Vanessa Carreira- I never really paid attention to Vanessa throughout the duration of the pageant. I was so shocked to see the tremendous transformation she underwent since bagging her national crown in December last year... Vanessa has this charm that Sonia Raciti had 3 years ago... I'm not really shocked she made it as far as the Final 5-- even finishing 4th place overall!
4. Miss India Neha Dhupia- As expected Neha made the semi-final cut! Neha's the 11th consecutive Indian to make it to the semi-finals... She was a clear favorite! Unfortunately, her poor choice of evening gown and unflattering figure prevented her from bagging what could have been India's 3rd Miss Universe crown in just 8 years...
5. Miss Germany Natascha Borger- Again there are no surprises! All eyes were on Natascha as early as the Miss Deutschland 2002 pageant last January 10... Honestly, it was her "Venezuelan" charm that got her into the Top 10. Aside from her surname, I don't see any German traces in her at all! And don't forget that she's an alumna of Osmel's boot camp La Quinta... This greatly worked to her advantage... She's the 1st German semi-finalist after 13 long years...
6. Miss Cyprus Demetra Eleftheriou- Demetra is the 1st ever Cypriot to crack the semi-final drought for her island. She deserved it! She had the body to flaunt and the gown to show off... I believed she could have placed higher had she shown more enthusiasm and charm a while ago... oh well...
7. Miss Canada Neelam Verma- Neelam, as we all know, is part Indian. Her parents are from India and they transferred to Canada when she was young. Unknown to many, Neelam is the 2nd ever Canadian of Asian descent to enter the Miss Universe semi-finals... The first was Kim Yee a couple of years ago... Neelam had wit and intelligence... Unfortunately, she didn't have the figure or the style to place her further...
8. Miss Panama Justine Pasek- I had mixed reactions and emotions about this girl... until she charmed her way to the Top 5. Justine had a great personality and it truly showed in her interviews a while ago. She just knows how to charm an audience! She had great stage presence and aura. She deserved her 1st runner-up placing. Actually, that's the highest spot Panama ever reached in Miss Universe-- it hasn't won yet. Hopefully, Justine's good showing will give her country a boost and encourage more beautiful women like her to join the Señorita Panama 2003 pageant...
9. Miss China Ling Zhuo- After China's success in Miss World 2001 courtesy of Bing Li, here is Zhuo with another strong opportunity to bring back China into the international arena in the cultural aspect. This is indeed a big break for China, after having received bad publicity after it figured in a brawl with the White House over political issues. Zhuo truly deserved to be up there. She's the 1st ever representative from mainland China... coincidentally, she's also their 1st semi-finalist and 2nd runner-up in Miss Universe! Way to go, China!
10. Miss Venezuela Cynthia Lander- Like I said earlier, Cynthia's the 19th consecutive woman from Venezuela to make it to the semi-finals... Since 1979, this South American nation has proven to be the world super power in beauty pageants. Even the USA couldn't beat its consistency record (The USA didn't make it in 1999 and also this year!). Cynthia deserved to be up there! With more than 6 months of hard work and preparation, Cynthia showed the universe that there's definitely more to being a pretty firefighter! :)

I got only Misses China, Venezuela, Russia and India...
However, I was able to correctly predict Isis Casalduc's victory as Miss Photogenic.

Oxana and Evelina are incomparable. Its like comparing apple to oranges. I don't think Oxana beat Evelina in this category or vice versa. :)

Thanks for posting them here! :)
Grabe ang scoring ng mga judges this year! Nasa extremes! 9.88 is the highest swimsuit score ever in Miss Universe history (beating Veruska's 9.85 score)... 7.99 is the lowest swimsuit score in recent times...

O nga...white is really in...siguro kung nagwhite gown si karen...baka maiba rin ang takbo ng tadhana...tutal she looks good in her white swimsuit naman e! Ano kaya placing nya? :hmm:
Parang gusto ko maghoard ng white clothes this season! la lang ....

Hi cathybee!
Ayoko rin talaga yung buhok niya. Para siyang losyang. :) Hihihi...
Pero alam niyo for me, mas gusto ko talaga yung Mikimoto crown ngayon. You contrast kasi nung pearls at nung bato, ang ganda! What you think. :)

The Miss Universe 2002 Final Question
Host Phil Simms: What makes you blush?
Oksana Fyodorova: (Through an interpreter of the Precision Translating Services) When I do something wrong.
In my opinion, this is the simplest and easiest final question in Miss Universe that I know of... :)
Oksana nailing it with her wit and charm...

Congratulations to Miss RUSSIA. She's very deserving of the title. She carried her beauty and intelligence with class and composure. I didn't really get a chance to know the delegates through the website, but as soon as I saw her, she was my favorite. She had EVERYTHING. Very natural, sweet, and dignified. :)
I love her in her goddess looking gown. GUCCI all the way. Tom Ford is a god.
I'm very happy that we got an usual top 10 this year. The change is very positive. The final question was rather strange, and didn't require much thinking BUT it was good for the pageant. These girls come equipped with answers about hunger, poverty, subservience, womens rights, and 'the essence of being a woman'. Questions such as the final one this year demonstrates and brings out more of their personality and less of what they've learned through extensive preparation of the pageant. I like. You'll really see who's more natural, and less of a suck-up to the host country.

Miss PHILIPPINES - I think she did her best. We still love her. I like the way she speaks, and it's apparent that she's eloquent. She had a decent amount of exposure though in the video clips, and side interviews. Job well done. No sad faces, she did me proud.
Miss INDIA - I don't like her! She's over confident and feeling. Bad hair. Bad gown (my sister said it's one of those gowns sexy stars here wear to award nights). Bad choice of swimsuit. The hips, my gawd. Great birthings ones though. I'm very happy that she was put in her place. Smart judges. I think the Indian pagaent industry has become over confident. No offense to any Indians here, just my thoughts.
Miss CHINA - I know she's Asian, but I don't like her too. She can speak english, I'll give her since she didn't need an interpreter. During her interviews, she had a point but she was beating around the bush. She can't saying "LIKE ME!" and "RIGHT NOW". Sorry, I don't think that got the crowd nor the judges.
Miss PANAMA - She wasn't striking, but she has such [u]charm[/b]. I started to like her after her first interview. Smart girl. She's very deserving too, but tell me something. What was up with evening gown?
Miss VENEZUELA - She's a step below stunning. She's beautiful, sexy, poised, but something was missing. I don't know what it was. I like her, nonetheless.
Miss PUERTO RICO - Can someone clarify something for me. Why don't you guys like her? Mayabang ba? Feeling? Over confident? I'm just reading your posts and I'm wondering why. Didn't really see her that's all.
Miss USA - She doesn't look feminine at all. The judges were smart, we want women that look feminine and not like athletes. This is a beauty pageant. I believe she's in the wrong arena. There's this one other finalist, I forget her name, she had pandesals in her stomach too, and she scored poorly. I'm glad judges are making a clear distinction between feminity and being over-worked out.

...other thoughts
new crown - I LOVE IT. Initially, I didn't like it either, but it's beautiful. It's such a fresh change. I like. I like. I like.
production - I thought the set and overall production was amazing. I like how the scores were projected on the stage. good job on the part of the organizers. Though, they had one major error - at one point, the wrong script was projected on the teleprompter of Brook Lee. She paused for a very LOOOONG time. Yikes.
hosts - Daisy and Brook were good, I miss Bob Goen though. The guy was ok, but they could have gotten someone better. Gosh, he almost made a BIG mistake during the final question.
marc anthony - His performance was mediocre. Typical. Just surprised that he didn't serenade the girls, instead it looked for like a concert. Didn't like that idea.

This is the WORST year in my life when it comes to semi-final predictions in Miss Universe!
I only got 4 out of 10!!!
I got only Misses China, Venezuela, Russia and India...
However, I was able to correctly predict Isis Casalduc's victory as Miss Photogenic.
I was also able to correctly predict that this year's winner would be wearing white! Oksana wore white! :)
Hehe! Hi JENSIE!
Well, this ain't really the worst coz this is my first time to predict a top ten. During the 2000 and 2001 pageants, I didn't have my predictions. I just rooted for Nina Ricci and Zorah.
In my predictions, I got five (5) out of ten! Was that bad for a first timer?
I got Misses China, India, Germany, South Africa, and Venezuela right!
Actually, I feel bad because I placed Oxana Fyodorova in my suspicions list. I wasn't into her then. But come final night, when I was already seeing her move.. I thought I made a wrong judgment on her. Tsk tsk! I feel bad... really! :(
But I'm happy for her nonetheless! She has set so many firsts in this pageant. For one, she's the first one to wear the new Miss Universe crown designed by Mikimoto. She's also the first Russian Miss Universe. Add to that a record breaking swimsuit score. She garnered a whopping 9.88 in her score. Therefore erasing then Miss Venezuela Veruska Ramirez's record set in 1998.
Well, some pexer said that Oxana Fyodorova was destined to win. I so agree with him/her. She was supposed to compete last year pa but she prioritized her studies. She had to wait for a year to compete in Miss Universe. Then this year, she was the last delegate to arrive in Puerto Rico because she had problems with her VISA in Los Angeles. Everybody thought that she won't make it. They were all losing hope. But fate has it that she'd compete this year and so her visa problems were fixed. Tingnan mo nga naman, nanalo pa kahit last delegate to arrive.. Well, she taught me a lesson there. That Patience is a virtue!
This has gotta to be a first for me that I was satisfied with the results right after the pageant. During the last three years, it took time before I was able to accept and live by the results. This year's really great! What a start for the international pageant community.
I'd just have to say that I really loved the Swimsuit competition. The music, the backdrop, the waterfalls, and that white thing that they were carrying with them (what do you call that?). I loovveedd it!!
Well, on Puerto Rico taking the Miss Photogenic Award.. I don't think she deserved it. Howell, I really have this thing against Puerto Ricans eh.. :teehee: Sorry!

Raven-haired Russian is Miss Universe
30 May, 2002 06:01 BST
By Frances Kerry
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (Reuters) - Miss Russia, raven-haired post-graduate student Oxana Fedorova, has won the Miss Universe 2002 title at a glittering ceremony in Puerto Rico, sweeping away a field of 74 other candidates with her elegance and charm.
In second place was Miss Panama, Justine Pasek, while Miss China, Ling Zhuo, finished third. China, the world's most populous nation, had never sent a contestant to the glitzy pageant before.
The winners were announced at the end of a gala night of parades in figure-hugging swim suits and shimmering evening gowns in San Juan, capital of the U.S. Caribbean territory of Puerto Rico on Wednesday.
Crowned with a diamond and pearl-encrusted crown and smiling hugely, 24-year-old green-eyed Fedorova walked the catwalk before a cheering crowd and then launched within minutes into her year of flashing cameras and celebrity.
It was the first time a Miss Russia had won the contest, which is run by the Miss Universe Organisation, jointly owned by property tycoon Donald Trump and CBS Television .
Fedorova, who has a law degree and is working on a doctoral law thesis on civil law at the Russian Ministry of Interior University, gushed to reporters about how happy she felt. Speaking in Russian and using a translator, she smilingly noted she wanted to improve her English.
Visa problems meant she arrived a bit late in Puerto Rico for the three-week run-up to the contest, Fedorova said, so the national pageant director told her "either you won't get there at all or you will win Miss Universe.
The results were decided by how each of the leading five women in the contest responded to a series of questions, ending with one they all had to answer -- "what makes you blush?"
"When I say the wrong things, " said Fedorova, to the laughter of more than 6,000 festive pageant-goers in the packed Robert Clemente Coliseum.
Fedorova looked stunning, but with her academic credentials and poise, she has the sort of accomplishments Miss Universe organisers say they look for to get beyond an image of a pageant queen as focused on looks alone.
A show business perennial launched by a swimsuit company 51 years ago, the event draws a global television audience that organisers estimate at 600 million people in 176 countries.
Fedorova, statuesque in a floating white dress on Wednesday night, is a volleyball and shooting enthusiast who lives in St Petersburg. She wants to own her own law firm one day.
She won a year's salary, a wardrobe allowance, use of an apartment in New York and travel and public engagements around the world that include fund-raising for AIDS research. Travel starts with a trip to Kenya in two weeks' time.
"I really want to be associated with children's causes," said Fedorova. "Today's girls are tomorrow's mothers; they need to be taken care of."
Puerto Rico's Denise Quinones won last year's contest, also held in San Juan, to the joy of many on this island of 3.8 million people. The flag-waving crowd cheered Quinones on her on her last walk as Miss Universe on Wednesday night.
The contestants spent three weeks practising for the contest and taking part in preliminary rounds that narrowed the field down to just 10 of the 75 contestants. Those were not announced until the contest was underway on Wednesday night.
Then those 10 were winnowed down to five women, who faced a test of quick wits and steel nerves to answer questions in a matter of seconds -- and show a bit of style at the same time.
Panama's Justine Pasek, a 22-year-old model, won huge cheers when asked the question "what other country would you like to represent?"
"I would love to represent Puerto Rico," she said. "I am very grateful to this enchanting land."
Salsa star Marc Anthony warmed the crowd with two songs, acrobats soared overhead between parades and the family of Miss Ecuador, Isabel Ontaneda Pinto, brought 3,000 roses for women in the audience, making for a night on the town in San Juan.
But Wednesday night's result was a surprise -- and something of a disappointment for many in the audience, who had favoured Miss Dominican Republic, the bubbly beauty Ruth Ocumarez, or their own Miss Puerto Rico, Isis Marie Casalduc. Neither of them made it to the final 10 contestants.
"It was disappointing," said Carmen Rodriguez, 65, from San Juan. "We wanted Isis to win."
"But Miss Russia is very beautiful, and I liked her reply about what made her blush, which was very sincere."

Oo nga eh. How ironic, NO Caribbean in the Top 10! To think a lot of people (including myself and Lara_D) have initially considered the Caribbean the strongest region in this year's pageant... From this region, we have the over-hyped Misses Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Curacao... And the thing is, none of them made the semi-final cut! Even Miss Jamaica, who had perfection written all over her, failed to make it.
Well, Puerto Rico bagged the Arpeggio Photogenic Award and the 1st runner-up plum in National Costume. The Dominican Republic, on the other hand, won 2nd runner-up also in National Costume... Consuelo na nga kumbaga...

Post-Pageant Thoughts
-Bahamas was before Trinidad and Tobago in the Parade of Nations because they considered the name of the country as The Bahamas.
-I really loved France's accent. Very sophisticated.
-Wow! what a diverse group of semifinalists. This group will rival that of 1999 not only because USA was not there but because it is varied.
-I was very pleased with Miss Albania's inclusion in the top ten. She is my second in the looks category, second to Iva Lamarao.
-Amazingly enough, I wasn't very disappointed when Portugal was not called. This top ten is a very good one, although I wouldn't mind removing India and Canada.
-Albania has a very genuine reaction. South Africa almost didn't react at all. Venezuela was cute.
-Hehe, I got a glimpse of Iva Lamarao when Oksana was called. Like I said before, in the Portugal, PR and Russia batch, Oksana will get the nod.
-For the second time, the tenth spot was the only one left and USA and Venezuela haven't been called yet. And again, Venezuela gets the nod.
-With this style of prelims voting, USA will almost always be overshadowed by Venezuela. If this method of voting was used since 1993, I think the only year USA would have been in the semis would be in 1995.
-With the exclusion of Miss USA in the semifinals, Lindsay Douglas fans out there would definitely pound and disparage Shauntay Hinton.
-What an amazing entrance of the ladies during the runway show. Was that like a light or electric field or something? Fantastic!
-Add this light or electric field with Brook Lee's husky and somewhat mystical voice. Wow!
-Albania had a nice simple red gown. However, I must say that she walked really weird during the Semifinal Evening Gown.
-Contrary to what was expected, Venezuela did not change gowns. But she was still absolutely amazing. Russia did change to another gown. Oksana's prelims gown is a wedding gown, her semifinal gown was her maternity dress!!!
-It was amazing how Russia managed to get scores of flying colours, considering that it is so common for the judges to give scores from 8.00-9.00.
-Albania's 1-piece swimsuit may have ruined it for her. Tsk, tsk, she should have known better. Although it worked for her in prelims, it didn't work this time.
-Oksana Fedorova now holds the record for the highest semifinal Swimsuit score. She beats Veruska Ramirez's score of 9.850.
-the scores from the Semifinals can be likened to that of 1987 and 1989. The highest was way ahead of the rest and the lowest being really far from the highest.
-Venezuela was surely a crowd pleaser. She and Russia got the most applauses but towards the end, you could hear everyone cheer for dear Miss Russia.
-Panama and Venezuela used translators but replied in English. Russia was the only one who actually used the translator to get her ideas across. Panama asked to translate a word she didn't know what the English equivalent is.
-Panama wanted to get the crowd of PR so she said she would want to represent PR. China was doing the same to with her "Regarde moi" remarks. South Africa didn't really care, she just wanted to get her ideas across. Venezuela and Russia need not try to get the audience's approval. They already have it.
-What's the point of awarding US Virgin Islands the Congeniality award again? It surely was not a shocker. And the Photogenic award also was not a surprise. We Filipinos should have done our jobs and really voted for Karen, so as to show PR that we still are the Internet Voting Country.
-The final question was a shock. It's too simple and yet so difficult to answer. Will they answer it honestly, construct a coherent remark or just include it with a politically correct reply?
-Panama and South Africa's answers were typical of a good pageant response. China almost lost it. Venezuela wanted to add some remarks that were not entirely appropriate. Russia's answer was pure and simple. Nothing more, nothing less.
-I would have expected the judges would give their vote to Russia --- of course this was based on her sky-high semifinal scores. Venezuela should have at least gotten a higher ranking --- the judges based their vote for Cynthia from her answers. China got an unbelievably high ranking, although she was 3rd upon entering the top five. Panama's answers made an impression that catapulted her to the runner-up position. South Africa, I thought had very direct and almost unbelievably concise answers. The questions didn't seem as a shock to her. The judges probably used it against her for the possibility of overly rehearsed answers.
-Of the top five, the stand-outs were definitely Venezuela and Russia. Panama looked better during the last 3 weeks. South Africa didn't change looks. China's hair bugs me.
-The last time a non-English Speaking delegate won was back in 1996, when Venezuelan Alicia Machado won, a woman who barely spoke English.
-I reckon that this year will not have a "the-1st-runner-up-was-better" syndrome. Panama was a distant second. Russia really had the judges approval.
Corrections, Comments and Reactions are welcomed. What a Miss Universe Pageant this has been!

just my 2 cents...
for me the top 10 was a total disappointment consdering that i got 4 out of 10- germany, india, venezuela, and russia...
i am shocked by the scores given to miss china, who IMHO doesn't deserve 'em as well as she doesn't look well... philippines would have been on that spot... her answers aren't impressive...
russia was a real stunner... would someone argue that she is an elizabeth hurley look-alike? she is indeed... a true exotic beauty...
panama- doesnt deserve to be the 1st runner up... not impressive as venezuela or south africa...
surprising to not see colombia, usa, and the hometown queen herself puerto rico in the top 10... what w e n t wrong?
albania- i dont like her...
cyprus- resembles miss texas 2002...
india- a turn-off in the evening gown andher 8.1 score...
the stage was very good particularly the part showing the scores... the crown looked very sophisticated yet doesn't bear any insignia of miss universe...
the parade of nations is also really cool... the best i've seen so far...

Ah okay. So it'll be the 2nd time for Panama City to host Miss Universe. The 1st time was in July of 1986, where Venezuela's Barbara Palacios Teyde Perez Hernandez won. Kaya expect Venezuela to take revenge next year...Sentimental sa kanila yung Panama...

There are plans to host Miss Universe 2004... However, I don't think this will push through because by then we are having our Presidential elections... Siyempre yun ang uunahin ng gobyerno at press natin... Well, maybe sa 2005...
The Araneta Center has plans to expand... It plans of turning its present location into a world class entertainment center... a la Las Vegas na parang Bayamon. I read about this before. Millions of dollars are involved in this project... Pag natapos ito, dun mismo gaganapin ang Miss Universe pageant... (kung kelan man yun...)

-I also fell in love with Miss France's accent. Very sophisticated and sensual indeed... "I'm See-vee Tih-yeh from Fwruhnce!" Hehe.
-Since the year 2000, those who won the Swimsuit Award during the semi-finals went on to win Miss Universe: Lara, Denise and the latest, Oksana...
-Yeah, Musique's right... for the first time in 4 years, Miss Venezuela did not change gowns during the Live Telecast... I wonder why Cynthia stuck to her Presentation Show gown...
-Miss India Neha Dhupia also didn't change gowns. Weeks before Neha flew to San Juan, it was reported that she was to wear this elegant purple gown... I wonder why it didn't push through...
-I loved the Parade of Nations this year! That "street party" thingie is just soooo cool! It's the best since 1999...
-Miss Ecuador seems to be Karen Agustin's close friend... during the Delegates' Favorites segment, Miss Ecuador voted for Karen during the "Best Personality" voting... And then the two were seen together during the segment wherein hostess Daisy Fuentes was showing off the new Mikimoto crown to be won...
-This is the very first time that the Evening Gown competition preceeded the Swimsuit Competition...
-The Roberte Clemente Coliseum is way larger than last year's venue... (Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum)
-Neelam Verma is the 2nd ever Canadian of Asian descent to make it to the semi-finals. The 1st was Kim Yee a couple of years ago...
-There were 2 Indians (Miss India & Miss Canada) and 2 Venezuelans (Miss Venezuela & Miss Germany) in the Top 10... Hmmm... diversity, diveristy...
-The "magic bowl" which contained the questions during the Personality Q&A is the very same one used for the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants...
-Miss Nigeria might have lost the battle this time around... However, she hasn't really lost the war... Come November, she's expected to make waves in her very own hometown city of Abuja for the Miss World 2002 pageant... For all we know, Chinenye might even win a back-to-back victory for her country!

Vanessa's costume was designed by top Colombian couturier Jaime Arango. The costume is called Asi es Colombia. ("This is Colombia.") Vanessa is the 6th Colombian to win the National Costume Award in Miss Universe.
Here's a shot of Karen Agustin in her national costume. It was designed by Colombian couturier Alfredo Barraza.

Jensie: Miss India also stuck with one hairstyle (I would like to call it the Priyanka look)for both her swimsuit and evening gown...
CONGRATS TO MISS RUSSIA, Oxana Fyodorova first of all, and to the MUO for putting on a great show! I must say, I am very satisfied with the results :D
Now some comments and observations...
The parade of nations this year was quite different from last year's. The delegates introduced their names and countries as opposed to shouting the country's name only, and that is a good thing since we were able to hear them, at least.
Stand-outs in this segment were Misses France, Canada (nice costume!), Dominican Republic, India, Honduras, the Netherlands, Colombia, China, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore ( they both glowed, didn't you notice?) and of course, Miss Russia, with her superwoman-esque pose....
Miss USA Shauntay Hinton didn't make the cut this year, and so did Misses Puerto Rico Isis Casalduc and Miss Colombia Vanessa Mendoza.
Beginner's luck struck the two new delegates from Albania and of course, China.
Nice background music when the Top 10 was called out. Notice that there weren't any black delegates in the Top 10, this being dubbed as a year of the blacks...
The delegates who were in great fighting form during the swimsuit competition were Misses Russia of course, followed by Miss China Zhuo Ling (simply flawless!) and Miss Canada Neelam Verma knew how to walk the walk and talk the talk. IMO, she was overlooked. I mean, she didn't deserve the terribly low swimsuit score.
On to the evening gown competition... Miss Russia looked like a Greek godess in her gown. I liked how it hugged her form when she walked. Miss India Neha Dhupia, well, went for the wrong choice of evening gown. It was tad too daring for a Miss India. Miss Venezuela wore something (?) to hold her gown's form in place. Yun yung sinasabing daya sa gown niya.. ehehehe :)
Guys I don't know if you notice that the Final 5 of this year was very, very similar to that of 1999. Misses Venezuela Cynthia Lander and Miss South Africa Vanessa Carerra placed in the same manner as Carolina Indriago and Sonia Ranciti did three years ago.
There was an Asian runner-up and as well as a Latina runner-up in the person of Ling Zhuo and Justine Pasek, just like Diana Noguiera and our Miriam Quiambao. The only difference was that this year, Miss China placed third and Panama came in second.
And now, the winner came from a country with no previous Miss Universe title, again just like in 1999 with Mpule Kwelagobe... :)

-There were 2 Indians (Miss India & Miss Canada) and 2 Venezuelans (Miss Venezuela & Miss Germany) in the Top 10... Hmmm... diversity, diveristy...
Clearly, the Venezuelans edged the Indians in this year's pageant. With Cynthia finishing in 5th and Natascha in 6th. While Neha and Neelam finished in 9th and 10th respectively. Magkakasunod pa talaga eh no? 5th & 6th for the Venezuelans. 9th & 10th for the Indians. Galing!

MY VIEWS ON THE TOP TEN SEMIFINALISTS
This is just my personal take on the pageant and it's quite lengthy, but you could ignore it if you want to ;)
Let's start with the perennial semifinalist, India. No offense to all fans of Neha, but i don't think she deserves to be in the top ten. The scores that the judges gave her affirmed that. The spot could have belonged to someone else who could have given the frontrunners a run for their money. I am convinced that among the Indian semifinalists following Sushmita's victory in 1994, it is only Lara and Celina who rightfully earned their spot in the semis. All the others, Neha included, were due to the so-called "sash factor," and not because they were truly outstanding. Neha isn't that bad, but I am sure there were better candidates than her.
The same goes to a fellow Indian, Canada's Neelam Verma. It makes me think that the reason she was in the Top Ten is because she was of Indian descent. This time, it is not the sash factor at work, but the race factor, as I may call it. (Which can also be said of Germany, which as I would later expound is a different case). And I don't think that being Indian should give her an automatic advantage over the others, she should still have that extraordinary quality that places her above the rest. Unfortunately, I don't think Neelam has it. Again, the judges' scores reflected this.
As for Panama, forgive me but I really don't find her beautiful at all. The hair was a mess and the face was ordinary. I don't even find her charming nor captivating. CHARMING is Germany and CAPTIVATING, is Nigeria (Were you able to see her projection in front of the camera? It was the crown written all over her!). The gown also looks awful and the answers I think were unnatural. I think she and Miss South Africa look alike. Since I mentioned her, I might as well proceed with Vanessa Carreira. Just like, Panama's Justine Pasek, I also don't see anything special about her. If there's anything at all that I find in her, it would be that she's a cross between Laura Dern and Jessica Rodriguez. Plus, these two girls make me think I am watching Miss Universe in the 1980s. Their look was really old(?), seemed like they competed not with Oxana, but with Yvonne Ridding (Miss Universe 1984). By the way, Miss Uruguay could have made them a perfect trio.
China is very cute. But it reaches a saturation point. The moment she was called as one of the Top Ten, I was enchanted by her and it reached its peak during the Final Five Q&A portion. From then on, she appeared ordinary and plain. Her answer in the first part of the Q&A was charming. But when she used the same strategy again, (Look at me!, Right here!) I think it was already a clear overkill. And yes, I think it would have been better if she had her hair down at least for the swimsuit competition. I also don't like her body, it leaves much to be desired. But nevertheless, I find it refreshing for her to be in the Top Ten. In fact, I'd rather have her over Panama as the first runner up .
Germany! At first I didn't really considered her to be a contender. Though she may not have an oval face (which is said to be a must have to be beauty queen), her beauty grows on you. She looked every inch a woman, something that other countries had forgotten somehow (e.g. Brazil, Colombia). She has this confidence that does not irritate you unlike some candidates (Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico). And I don't know, whenever she walks and glides and looks at the camera, it seems like she is talking to you, saying something sweet. Though, her being a Venezuelan may have something to do with that, she is really a knockout by herself. For short, the fact that she was originally from Venezuela was not the reason she got the nod of the judges, it was her magical presence and aura that did it. Too bad, she didn't make the cut for the Top Five. And I almost forgot, what a KILLER figure! (as revealed in the Swimsuit Competition)
Next comes Venezuela. As always their representatives are, to say the least, stunning. And Cynthia is no different. The way she carried herself, just leaves you in awe. Like Natascha, she is not that outstanding initially, but she delivered when it was needed. The gown was really amazing and perfect for her. Despite what other pageant fans say about her, I think she definitely deserves to be in the Finals.
As for Cyprus and Albania, i think it was nice (and wise) of the preliminary judges to have included them in the Top Ten. They are both pretty and natural-looking. I think Albania could have stolen the limelight from Russia since it seems to me that they look alike.
RUSSIA. SHE DESERVES IT! She really stood out . And I am really thankful that the judges saw it the same way. However, it should have been better if someone could have given her a tougher competition. I believe that there is at least one lady among those excluded who could have provided Russia a good fight to the finish. But, it was clearly a runaway victory, and so give credit where credit is due.
In conclusion I think 5 girls deserved to be in the Top Ten: Cyprus, Albania, Venezuela, Germany, Russia
I am not sure about China. And the rest could have been replaced by other ladies like Nigeria, USA, Curacao and Ukraine and maybe even the Philippines.
Good thing the following did not make it:
Colombia, (forgive me, but most of the time, she looks like a transvestite. Again No Offense to the Transvestites, this just happens to be a Miss Universe contest) Puerto Rico, (pretty, but not that great) Dominican Republic (the most hyped girl)

-Albania has a very genuine reaction. South Africa almost didn't react at all. Venezuela was cute.
Kaya nga. Parang wala lang kay South Africa na natawag siya.
-With this style of prelims voting, USA will almost always be overshadowed by Venezuela. If this method of voting was used since 1993, I think the only year USA would have been in the semis would be in 1995.
Hehe, sana nga ganyan na parati. Pero its a bomb kung hindi makakapasok ang Venezuela at USA oo.
-With the exclusion of Miss USA in the semifinals, Lindsay Douglas fans out there would definitely pound and disparage Shauntay Hinton.
Hay, Lindsay!
-What an amazing entrance of the ladies during the runway show. Was that like a light or electric field or something? Fantastic!
-Add this light or electric field with Brook Lee's husky and somewhat mystical voice. Wow!
Loved this part also.
-Oksana Fedorova now holds the record for the highest semifinal Swimsuit score. She beats Veruska Ramirez's score of 9.850.
Venezuela's Milka Chulina holds the highest in interview (probably until forever na). Colombia's Carolina Gomez is highest in evening gown.
-The final question was a shock. It's too simple and yet so difficult to answer. Will they answer it honestly, construct a coherent remark or just include it with a politically correct reply?

Can somebody please post the FIRST Q&A here? thanks!
Here's my thoughts after reading all the posts after I left off :)
1. I also heard the host saying..."See you in Panama" so I assume that that will be the next place!
2. Okana's gown is Gucci!!! Ganda talaga! Gucci is also minimal but classy! *okay*
3. I really cant understand how Canada got there! If Im not mistaken, she's the one with the pandesal thing on top of her stomach...if not her, basta may isa dyan! Anyways, baka more than 50% *** Q&A sa preliminary which explains her being in coz there are some who commented that she really has it between the ears! but still......
4. Actually, I feel that there are lots more deserving but then, syempre, the results will not please everyone! But, Ms Russia, no contest ako dyan! :D
5. After watching the show, I think China should have gone to the 3rd or 4th r.u. but then, as someone pointed out, the judge might be thinking that South Africa has a well rehearsed answer than a confident answer which placed her down in the 3rd place. But for me, S. Africa gave a better and confident answer than China. China has shown jitters all over her BUT you have to give her credit...as she said in the clip on how beauty pageants in her country is...no one knows how she should act or what kind of preparation she should do since no one has experienced Miss Universe yet! For a country which more besotted with models than beauty queens, it is a job well done for her!
6. I dont like Panama's gown too...I think its too casual! And just like previous comments, the gown of Germany practically kill her despite the skills that she has in projecting it! Ayaw talaga lumitaw *** gown nya eh! As for Albania, nice choice of gown, really shown her beautiful complexion! :D
7. Ako rin..I found France's accent very breathtaking and sans the make up, shes really really beautiful (notice it on one of the interview clips!)
cathybee
Jun 1, 2002, 03:38 AM
8. I am thinking...maybe the reason for the too high a score and too low a score is that the judges have already a winner in their mind...so para sure eliminate *** ayaw talaga nilang nandun, they gave that contestant a very low score or a score that is really far away from the top gunners! Hindi kaya? :confusing:
9. Well PR really shine in the photo shoots lately but then...well...I think there are others much better in place of Miss Photogenic...siguro lang, mababa ang internet access sa country nila! :hmm:
10. Oonga, nakakakaba naman ungmistake nung host! Pero...syempre, di naman talaga sya masisisi, first time lang yata nya maghost ng pageant ! Pero okay naman sya, good voice projection and very objective looking!
11. I really cant say that Okana has won over Evelina...I still think Evelina is a very very exotic goddess...parang hard to reach Greek goddess...Now Okana is a more earthly (meaning warm and endearing) goddess! Iba pa rin talaga ang dating nilang 2 so iba ang feeling na makukuha mo from the two of them! I still think Evelina has a more kissable lips! hehehe....
12. ANGGGG LAAAKKKKIII nga ng venue! Nakakabulagta! And I also like the parade of nations! Parang mardi gras! kaso, bwisit na rpn 9, may mga contestants na hindi mo na naririnig *** salita nila dahil may nagwin over ng other voices!
13. Baka nanakawan si Ms India kaya hindi nya gamit *** naunang gown in mind hehehe...:glee: nagisip talaga ng palusot eh!
14. I thought Cyprus will give Okana a run on the swimsuit competition...heavenly body eh! Pero one thing's for sure, she is really competitive with Germany for the best physical assets! :naughty:
15. Halos lahat ng semi finalists e nakawhite! Tama sabi...white is really in!

Nakakainis nga talaga yung ginawa ng RPN 9 na yun... pero they made clear na sila lang ang "official Philippine broadcaster" ng Miss Universe 2002... so it means damay lahat ang mga cable companies within the country... hindi illegal ang ginawa nila...
Wala tayong magagawa dito...

I just love this year's swimsuit competition... It strongly reminded me of those Victoria's Secret fashion shows wherein the models sashayed on the catwalk wearing elegant capes... Kudos to MUO for finding ways to re-invent itself! :)

Bakit nangiwi ang lips ni Karen after Daisy asked her about the Mikimoto Crown.. nag-isip muna si Karen, medyo hindi alam ang sasabihin. For me she was not smart when it comes to that portion. Compare sa ibang candidates very game and attentive sa mga pagsagot ng mga questions ni Daisy..

I strongly believe sa swimsuit nadali si Shauntay... Those muscles were just too much, in my opinion... Impossible namang sa interview at gown siya sumablay...

I noticed a few (or totally no one) from the thread paid attention or focused on Miss Canada Neelam Verma... So here is her shot during the Evening Gown competition...
In my opinion, Neelam even looked more Indian than Neha... Neha looked either Nepalese or Pakistani...

Yeah, she most probably flunked the swimsuit competition. With that, she's the third woman from her country to miss the semi-finals. That must've hurt so bad. :depressed2:

Miss Russia Oksana Fyodorova performs in her national costume when the 75 delegates pre-taped the Parade of Nations segment that was shown during the Live Telecast.
Ang daring pala ng costume ni Oksana! Dito ko lang na-realize sa shot na ito...

Yeah, the 3rd after Kimberly Pressler and Barbara Peterson...
The judges during their respective years must have had good reasons to ignore and exclude them from the Top 10...
Miss USA 1999 Kimmy Pressler flunked the Evening Gown competition during the MU99 Presentation Show... Tinadtad daw siya ng mga ocho... Saka ang panget din ng gown niya eh... Gray long-sleeved gown... A wrong move indeed! It didn't compliment her 5'5" frame...
Miss USA 1976 Barbara Peterson naman was simply overshadowed by the delegates from HK, England and other former British colonies during Miss Universe 1976... Mas marami lang talagang mas charming kesa sa kanya... Oh well...

Neelam looks like actress Cherie Gil in this angle... :) Simply because nobody expected her to make it except for Jimmy of Jimmy's pageant page of course. I saw her World Tour interview and she was really good!
I noticed Canada's success lately comes from its citizens of Asian descent. Kim Yee (half Ukranian, half Chinese) in 2000 and this year, Neelam Verna of Indian descent. :) Sayang lang nung 1996 when Canada was represented by a Filipina. Nakapasok din sana siya.

Yeah, sayang si Renette Cruz... ang bababa ng prelim scores niya eh... way lower than those of Aileen Damiles...
Do you remember that episode of Eezy Dancing kung saan nag-guest si Renette? Gumanda siya dun ha! :)
