Good luck KAREN! :)
Easy lang tayo! GlobalBeauties.com is not even connected in any way with the Miss Universe Organization! So what if they never put Karen on their list? Miriam Quiambao was on nobody's list until Presentation Night either. Karen has what it takes to potentially make it. And we should not depend on pageant fan sites to gauge how good Karen will fare. It all depends on how she conquers the Presentation Show and our prayers of course!
Karen, you won't be able to read this, but I believe in you so much! You were the only candidate I was rooting for in Binibini because you simply have it :)! Ano ba ang itsura ng gown mo? Nakaka-intriga naman!

My top 5 favorite National Costumes!
Philippines - If Zorah's costume bagged the first runner-up award in last year's Best in National Costume competition, I don't see any reason for Karen's costume to be overlooked by the judges this year. Very eye-catching! And definitely the best costume ever worn by a filipina in this pageant!
http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/ihl.macdonald/press/nc/images/philippines.jpg
India - I know her costume is a bit recycled already but who could ignore Neha? She knows how to give justice to her costume!
http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/ihl.macdonald/press/nc/images/india.jpg
Spain - I don't know.. I have a feeling that this one's goin to land in the top ten Best in National Costume competition.
http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/ihl.macdonald/press/nc/images/spain.jpg
Portugal - I like the simplicity of Iva's costume. I also couldn't explain the feeling. I think this one's goin to do well in the Costume Competition.
http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/ihl.macdonald/press/nc/images/portugal.jpg
Honduras - I'm not much into carnival-like costumes but Erika's an exception. Very impressive. Actually, hers and Miss Mexico's are of the same footing but the latter does not grow on you.

Yep. i've read that so many times already in the Jamaican newspapers, even before they had the delegates for Miss Jamaica 2002. It says in one of the newspapers, they'll be selecting the rep for Miss U 2003 as well, so the Miss Jamaica 2003 has one year to prepare.

Pulse to search for the million-dollar perfect girl in Jamaica
Observer Reporter
Monday, July 23, 2001
Pulse Model Agency last week announced that it intends to launch an island-wide search for what it describes as "the perfect girl" whom, it is hoped, will emerge triumphant in the next Miss Universe Pageant to be held in May 2002. And the agency, local franchise-holders for the Miss Universe Pageant since 1989, says it is offering a prize of $1m cash to ensure that a candidate capable of winning the pageant can be found. The prize will be jointly funded by the Big Ten event sponsors.
And in a radical shift in tradition, the Pulse CEO also announced that the selection of the Miss Jamaica Universe 2003 queen will also be selected at the same time as the 2002 winner. The 2003 candidate will then have a year to prepare for the Miss Universe Pageant.
Making the announcement at a power outage-affected cocktail reception last week, Pulse CEO Kingsley Cooper, said that this type of search was done "a few years ago" but has been revived.
"We have revived it because we think it's particularly important for 2002. And this search also extends to 2003 and of course, part of the reason for the search is because we are commited to victory for Jamaica in the next Miss Universe Pageant...," Cooper said.
He also announced that Pulse will conduct a Supermodel of the Caribbean competition next year, under the auspices of the prestigious Ford Model Agency, with which Pulse has been associated for several years. Winners of the competition could be offered modelling contracts by the Ford agency. Pulse has conducted a Supermodel of Jamaica competition since 1989 and Cooper said that this regionwide search could be considered to be an extension of that programme.
Under the licence granted by Ford, Pulse can conduct model searches in Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, St Lucia, St Vincent, Dominica, The Cayman Islands and Antigua.
The Pulse CEO also announced that his agency has received substantial financial assistance through the European Union for Caribbean Fashion Week, scheduled for November 7 11. Without disclosing a figure, he said that this commitment now meant that the event was approximately 70 per cent underwritten and he added that he hoped that by September he would be in a position to announce that the event was 100-per cent sponsored.
"This is very significant because the Fashion Week has a budget of just under US$1m and that is very significant for something like fashion in the Caribbean," Cooper noted, contrasting this with the major scale of the industry in fashion centres like Milan and Paris.
Cooper said that the inaugural Fashion Week would serve "as a catalyst to bring the whole Caribbean region together in this movement of popular fashion culture, an opportunity for marketing Caribbean style and creating a symbol, through the event, of Caribbean style..."
The agency is running a series of monthly television shows, called CFW Monthly, highlighting Caribbean fashion and style, as a precursor to the November event, hosted by Jamaican international model, Lois Samuels.

dapat...etong national costume, isama yan sa scoring ng kanilang chance to win kase binabale wala lang ng iba dyan eh...parang feel nila na they're just doing a favor by wearing a costume...e take note, they are ambassadors...they are the p.r. of their countries...and i think the national costume is one way to market your country...to get to know your country...tapos, you are just gonna ignore its importance! e d parang nawala na rin *** significance ng pagiging rep ng country mo!

tapos merong iba naman i think gown lang *** suot nila for their national costume e i dont really see any thing that has to do with culture with the gowns that they wore....
Im also disappointed with china's costume...centuries of history and they still settle for the chiong sam outfit which is already too worn out e iba ibang dynasty iba ibang outfits ang mga tao dun (korea's national costume is patterned after the costume during tang dynasty of china...btw)

It has something to do with history :) kase during tang dynasty...i think... start na may nagmigrate na mga chinese to korea...kaya there are certain cultures ng korea na nagrereflect from chinese culture...
actually parang japan din...kaya nga may mga words sa japanese na naiintindihan ng chinese kase parehong sulat at parehong meaning, iba lang nga ang bigkas

Yeah, maaga talaga ang Korea mag-select ng delegate for Miss Universe... how ironic... the last time they made it was in 1988 pa...
Yeah, let's give Nana a chance... 1 year to prepare siya! :)

I would rather stomach the yellow costumes of the Miss Swedens kasi at least sa kanila maganda at bagay sa kanila - regardless of your ethnic background. Bet natin next year YAN pa rin costume ng Miss France!!! hehehe
Yung kay Sylvie mejo nasa left side niya yung tail, baka next

I was expecting Miss China to wear something na mas engrande... I really wanna see those huge headresses and kimono-like gowns that Chinese women wear pag weddings, Chinese New Year, or other festivals... (Check out RPN9's Chinese movies every Sunday morning)
Ling Zhuo's cheongsam is just too plain eh... pero yeah, maganda nga siya... :)
She should have accessorized more... it's just too plain, she reminds me of those First Class flight stewardesses of Air China or China Airlines though...

Zack, all of these cabaret costumes were designed by world-renowned French designer Pierre Cardin... which is why I think Madame Fontanay (national director of the Miss France pageant) just won't let go of it...

The last German to make it in Miss Universe... Andrea Stelzer of Bayern... she was initially Miss South Africa 1985... but since South Africa was scrapped off from Miss Universe due to the rising apartheid in its land, Andrea wasn't able to compete back then... she then went to her "2nd" country Germany and tried out for the Miss Deutschland 1989 pageant... she won it and eventually represented Germany in Miss Universe 1989... she was a semi-finalist in that pageant held in Cancun, Mexico...

Nakakasawa na talaga! :( Guys, give France a break. Why is it such a biggie issue? C'mon, nobody in this thread even commented about the recycled costumes of Korea (hanbok) and India (choli). I believe it would be unfair to just complain about France's costumes when their country is not the only one that recycles. Greece and Netherlands did this in 2000 and 2001. So? If you don't mind.. Let's respect the decision of these countries that stick with their reliable costumes.

I think we're talking about France's national costume this way because we can't see its clear-cut historical value. The Korean and Indian, even Sweden's national costumes tell alot about their heritage, while the French costume does not even give us a clue. If the French girls dressed up as Marie Antoinette or Coco Chanel, then we wouldn't be talking about this.

It's just because the Choli and the Hanbok are part of the rich cultures of India and Korea. Even the Philippines' baro't saya has something to do with our culture. At least, for all we know, has different cuts, styles, and colors every year. And what i meant in that posting regarding Miss France, was that france has a well-off culture and its all the same color, style and cut that Miss France 2000 - 2002 has been wearing. All but literally recycled. Check out Miss Greece 2000's and Miss Greece 2001's National Costume, Miss Netherland 2000's and Miss Netherland 2001's National Costume. And you'll get my point.

loosen up a little, it's just a costume...

Yeah, and aside from that Zorah mentioned she was closer to Nina Ricci coz of Jeff Jeturian daw... I forgot to ask why... I'll ask her as soon as we get to talk to each other... :)
Yeah, you're right with your observation... medyo snobbish nga si Nina Ricci in a way... pero she can get really wild on night outs, I tell you... hehe!

well, she wore a white dress, na sleeve less and may ruffles konti, parang pheasant type (dunno if dat is correct, :) )..and simplicity best describes her kanina. miriam on the other hand wore a pink dress, long one with a tiara, kasi motiff (?) was about beauty queens. i dunno, miriam can get away with any color, remember when she wore an orange and a red gown last march?my mom even liked zora na ... hehehe

Because if that's what they could only afford to do for their candidate, then why react in an extravagant manner? No need to bluntly debase a delegate's costume.
I was just asking them to please give these countries a break. Because for them its so biggie an issue that Miss So and So used the same So and So! Duh!!

this year's batch is quiet imressive having watched the miss universe since 1994. of course there are the sentimental favorites and some darkhorses. but for me here are the girls that impressed me a lot based on the photos that i have seen so far and from the news that i have read.
xysher
May 22, 2002, 12:27 AM
my top ten so far in terms of headshots and other pictures i have seen. in no particular order
venezuela -- becuase she is miss venezuela and i think that she is very prepared for the pageant like the previous miss venezuelas.
india -- this girl fascinates me. i just love her face. it is a delight to see her face. there's this glow. and believe me, she has been through a very rigid training way back femina miss india.
colombia -- another lovely face. one of the most beautiful black candidate in years. although it surprises me that she is just 5'8(?). it would have been better if she were taller.
germany -- nice body and also lovely face. she projects well on the camera. but i'm not sure though about her wit. but nevertheless, she is a bomb!
dominican republic -- she is simply lovable. from the pictures that i have seen her and from the news it seems that the press people and the puerto ricans love her. this would work on her advantage.
usa -- she is not that physically appealing but i think that she has a lot to offer. also, the organizers of miss usa and universe are the same. i think that they saw something in shauntay. she has an impressive bio and she is a veteran.
nigeria -- stunning lady from africa. although not many was writen about her but i have this feeling that she would deliver. i hope so.
russia -- i just love those eyes. very soulful and mesmerizing. it was a surprise that russia made it last year but i won't be surprise this year. hope that she knows how to talk.
puerto rico -- it would be a big disapppointment for the host not to be in the top ten. although this is not a must but giving isis credit i think she will make it. she has prepared a lot. i can se her transformation.
south africa -- there is something about this girl that amazes. me.
curacao -- another beautiful black.
other potential ladies:
sweden, turkey, ghana, philippines (she's putting effort on this and hope it pays off)
i think it would be the year of the black ladies. :)
but let us wait and see what will be the reaction of the press and the puerto ricans after the preliminaries coz this would really matter.
what do you think of my assesment? :)

xysher,
Very nice top 10, and it seems you have done your research well. hehehe Even I'm having a hard time picking my top ten. But there are some strong delegates you left out like Misses Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Cyprus and Brazil to name a few. though I have to agree with you in picking Nigeria - there's something about this girl. Right now, I could not think of my top 10 because there are so many beautiful girls this year. It's so hard to choose. But I'm hoping Puerto Rico would be out of the top 10 this year. hehehe they had there share last year... hehehe

xysher: nice top ten! pero gaya nga ng sabi ni Lara, may kalakasan ding taglay sina Ms. Cyaman Islands, Ms. Jamaica, at Miss Cyprus. Miss Ghana is 6 feet tall, so she'll really stand out. Of course, let's hope Karen will get the judges' nod come prelims. Of course, let's leave 2 to 3 slots to "surprise" ladies. If I know, mapupunta yan sa mga "fave" countries (any of the ff.:Israel, South Africa, Canada, Estonia, France, Russia). May mga underrated ding girls like Switzerland, Portugal and exoticas like Dominican Republic and Honduras. This batch is a really exciting and competitive one compared to last year. Although masgusto ko pa rin ang batch '99. Next ang batch '96.
Napansin ko lang na masgumaganda si Neha at Karen A. sa mga pics. I didn't root for Neha during the Femina search but now, talagang ang lupet na niya!!!!!!
Miss Ukraine reminds me of Miss Belgium '94, I dunno why. Sorta innocence that borders on ditsy-ness.....:D
Jensie: Tama ka RE Kim Yee. sobra akong magdoubt kung bat siya na include sa kanyang Top 10 batch. When I saw her in her swimsuit, bumulaga sa akin ang MALAKING sagot. :D BTW, wasn't this the batch of Miss Estonia who also joined Miss Earth? Something Nikomage???? Isa pa yun!!!! Great assessment... I agree... However just like what you said, let's all wait for the Presentation Show--this is the main determining factor of those who'll make it to the Top 10... Anything could happen... And not all our favorites will make it whether we like it or not... Miss Universe has it's own little way of disappointing millions of fans every year...

Hello people!!!
I've watched and downloaded 2 Arpeggio Close-Ups in the Miss Universe site (Portugal and Philippines). Iva Lamrao's video was average but there were really questions where she speaks eloquently and not rambling for words. I especially liked her when she was singing her national anthem. I like her smile but I must say that she really reminds me of Evelyn Mikomagi, who is a good beauty pageant delegate and yet not of your typical competitive ladies.
Many are saying that Miss Philippines' video is sponaneous and that she was very articulate. Well, I cannot support this to the extreme but I must say that she has command of the language. She did a good job and I just hope that she would stop saying "um" and "that's it" and not be nervous when judgment comes.
Transcript of Karen's Close-Up video by Musique :
Note: I don't know exactly what the Nat Costume was called. And I'm sure what I wrote is different from the actual thing.
Q: Can you recall the first time you saw the Miss Universe competition?
A: The first time that I .. really watched the competition was in 1994 when Miss Universe was held in the Philippines and ... Sushmita Sen won that contest. That was the first time I watched it. 'Coz it was in the Philippines, you know, it was a popular thing then.
Q: Tell us about your national costume.
A: My national costume was .. designed by Alfredo Barraza and it's absolutely the .. most beautiful dress I've ever seen. Ah .. It's called the Monton de Manila and .. um .. during the Spanish era in the Philippines .. people use this .. um .. really big silk shawl with fringes at the ends and .. a really big skirt. And that's my cost..that's what my costume is going to be, it's hand-painted, the flowers are hand-painted and .. a the little brilliant crystals or gems are also .. um ... were stuck on the shawl by .. by .. by ... hands, I mean I saw it done in three days and it's great. It's beautiful.
Q: What country would you live in?
A: I don't know if I could live anywhere else, I just love the Philippines so much. I've grown up there, I was born there, I think I'm gonna die there. But ... if you ask me what country I would like to visit, I'd like to visit ... Egypt. Although I wouldn't live there. I'd like to visit Egypt because of the ancient history ... in there .. there's so much ... there's so much history there, there so much ... um ... I don't know ... um ... ancient stuff there like pyramids ... I want .. I want to go to the Nile. So I,I,I I've always wanted to do that. I've heard so many stories from my friends going there.
Q: Can you sing a few bars of your national anthem.
A: Okayyyy (laughs) (sings) Bayang Magiliw (puts right hand in left breast) Perlas ng Silanganan, Alab ng Puso, Sa dibdib mo'y buhay. (stop singing) Okay is that fine?
Q: What is the craziest thing that you have done?
A: There was this one time .. that I was able to put my fist in my mouth.
Q: What do you eat for breakfast?
A: Always rice. And .... whatever we have at home, I mean corned beef or hotdog or even chicken. (nods) I always eat rice. Rice during breakfast, um ... lunch and dinner, sometimes even during snacks.
Q: What is your nickname and how did you get it?
A: Dont...everyone just calls me Karen. Some friends, really few friends call me Ka. You know, it's just shortened Karen. That's it.
Q: What is your favorite dessert?
A: Ice cream. Chocolate ice cream. (smiles) or... or... double fudge or something. Anything with ice cream and nuts.. and .. and chocolate and nuts...that's great..great dessert.

For modem users, if you have trouble viewing the videos in realtime, just download them first using your favourite downloading software and just view them offline. It's much faster plus you get to watch it over and over again.

[end]
For modem users, if you have trouble viewing the videos in realtime, just download them first using your favourite downloading software and just view them offline. It's much faster plus you get to watch it over and over again.
Here's the URL for the videos:
URL http://www.missuniverse.com/movies/arpeggio/ph.mov
and just change the filename for other countries (ie, pt.mov for Portugal, us.mov for USA)
PS, Wala bang picture ng lahat sila in swimsuits by the pool. Puro putol kasi yung nakikita ko. Wala ba yung kumpleto? And also paki post na rin yun AA pic ni Iva. Thanx.

Oh well, I may sound sour graping but are the judges pure latinos / latinas? Well, I like Colombia's National Costume but Puerto Rico's National Costume is just too plain and dull. There are a lot whom i know deserves to be in the top three. We dont know what happened so i'll respect their decision but im still hoping for a fair contest. Regarding the National Costume Competition, I'm really disappointed with the outcome, i was expecting Mexico, Honduras, and even us bag that title. But I won't necessarily agree that they were bias, last year naman it was an Asian who won the best in National Costume, walang lutuan last year. And if there was then Denise would have placed in the top 3. At least hindi si Shautay ang nanalo kasi masusuka talaga ako nun. Pati rin naman tayo naging bias din eh, back in 94 pati ako napataas ang kilay ko nun nanalo si Charlene ng Best in National Costume. Hosnetly there were costumes that were more grand than Charlene's.

I still think that the costume of Colombia is too stiff...anyways, feel ko kaya natalo ang pinas kase there's something wrong with the coordination of the top and the bottom para bang ang ganda ganda ng dating sa taas pero pag dating sa baba parang wrong choice of colors ba....ang important kase sa gown na tulad nyan..kahit na lackluster *** top...dapat babawi sa baba lalo pa't mas malaki ang proportion ng skirt nya kesa sa top...:hmm: isip ko lang yan a :D

Here are the judges responsible for this year's DISAPPOINTING National Costume Show results...
Sonia Stege- Miss Puerto Rico '74 and Miss Universe '74 semi-finalist
Abniel Marat- Puerto Rican dramatist
Carmen Jovet- Puerto Rican journalist, commentator and producer
Salvador Alemañy- Puerto Rican botanist, florist
Lolita San Miguel- Puerto Rican ballerina, choreographer, educator and director
Silvio López- Puerto Rican mortgage business president
Linda Hernández- Puerto Rican director of News Channel 11
Nono Maldonado- Puerto Rican fashion designer
Mirtha Rubio- Puerto Rican fashion designer
Carlos Alicea- Puerto Rican environmentalist
Joyce Giraud- Miss Puerto Rico '98 and Miss Universe '98 2nd runner-up
I just can't confirm the nationalities of these remaining judges... pero I strongly believe they're all Puerto Ricans too...
Peter Cardon
Mariliani Soto
Dr. Juan Salgado
Felipe Flores
Nakaka-panlambot isipin na 11 of the 15 judges are PUERTO RICANS!!!! Wala talagang kalaban-laban ang ibang delegates (esp. the non-Caribbean and non-Latinas) kung ganun...
Last year, when Sa-Lang Kim and Zorah won, there were American judges and some with other nationalities as well... this year is different! Halos Puerto Ricans lahat...
Lara's right... ganyan din naman nung Miss Universe 1994 eh... All eyes were on the costumes of Miss Mexico Fabiola Perez Rovirosa and Miss Bahamas Meka Knowles... but Charlene won anyway... Maganda at stunning yung costume ni Charlene pero maraming pang mas engrande at mas magarbo...

It may be unpleasant coz the colors simply don't coordinate but it doesn't mean wrong choice of colors na yun. There's nothing wrong with that per se... This national costume involved months of careful research, planning and brain-storming... Madame Araneta even consulted historians and anthropologists because she wanted the dress to be perfectly natural...

Based on P-ex posts, press photos and publicity, these are my favorite delegates:
Germany - If Karen doesn't make it, I want her to win!
Colombia - The very first Colombian I liked since Carolina Gomez.
Philippines - I have great hopes about her!
Nigeria - She's very photogenic.
Puerto Rico - She looks more natural than Denise to me.
Delegates who will most probably make it to the Top 10 because of their sashes, aside from the fact that they are indeed beautiful: (Opinion ko lang ito ha...)
India
Venezuela
USA
Puerto Rico
:( Makes me think that there are only 6 spots being fought over...

Yah. Me sometimes thinks there are only 6 slots left. Pero naiisip ko rin na may mga current faves din ang Miss U (Israel, S. Africa). But based on what's happening now in the Middle East, Miss U might make another political statement and "overlook" Miss Israel altogether. Another thing is they might join in the Hollywood bandwagon and award this year's title to a colored lady. So, we might expect Kenya, Sweden, Cayman Is., Curacao, and the rest of the bunch.
Zack: I also thought the one in the middle will win. After all, last year sila ang 2nd RU sa Best in Nat'l. Costume. Besides, masgusto kong magproject si Erika R. kaysa kay Ruth O. Masmataray ang lola from Honduras.
RE GB choices, I'd rather have Honduras than Dom. Rep., Cayman Is. or Italy over Brazil, Peru over Panama, USA over Sweden, and Thailand over South Africa. There's something in SA's expression I don't like.
I just read the Miss USA Voy Messageboard and many Americans (?) were impressed by Karen's Aprregio close-up. Sila lang daw ni Miss USA ang natural at smart. Did anyone see Miss Columbia's interview? Pangit daw?

Yeah... Nina Ricci's costume was more of a national insult than a national costume... Peter Lim was supposed to design for her a national costume with peacock feathers... pero through Madame Araneta's intervention, this plan didn't push through... Barraza was commissioned instead...

Hi there Rosamae! :)
Unfortunately, the Miss Philippines pageant does not have an official website...
The Presentation Show is scheduled for Friday (May 24, San Juan local time)...
NO, the national costume DOES NOT have any bearing at all with regard to a delegate's chances of making the semi-final cut... The National Costume Show is a separate competition from the Presentation Show...
The delegates are scored in 3 categories: Interview, Bluepoint Swimsuit and Evening Gown... These 3 scores are averaged and the Top 10 composite avareges will determine who the Top 10 semi-finalists are... :)

I'm not sure about this issue involving Neha and Yamit... Pero I strongly believe it's not true...
