Yeah Indonesia joined Miss Universe 1996... her name is Alya Rohali all right. :)

She was almost expelled from the pageant after posing in a swimsuit in Boulder Beach together with the other delegates. This shot eventually reached Indonesia and immediately the Indonesian Embassy in the US ordered her to pull out from the pageant. However, a compromise was made and she was still permitted to stay with the condition of not competing in the swimsuit competition or appearing in a swimsuit in public...

Bakit di siya napili pumasok sa Top 10? It's plain and simple: she DIDN'T deserve it... she scored a terribly-degrading 7.50 in swimsuit and evening gown and 8.60 in interview... for short, she was butchered alive...

Miss Amabuyok started our semi-final streak in the Miss World pageant.

4 years later in 1972, Evangeline "Eva" Reyes made the semi-final cut in London. The next year, another Evangeline, "Vangie" Pascual, narrowly missed what could have been our 1st ever Miss World crown by placing 2nd overall to Marjorie Wallace of the United States...

Unfortunately strong contenders Joy Conde and Peachy Veneracion withdrew from the Miss World '76 and '77 (not sure) pageants respectively due the rising issue of apartheid and racism concerning South Africa... a lot speculated that these 2 could have put on a good show had they not withdrawn...

Regarding the Miss Photogenic election, I haven't made up my mind yet. When I think about the Official Head shots, the delegate that striked me the most was Miss Nigeria, Chinenye Ochuba! But I don't wanna overlook the other delegates' head shots! There are quite a handful of delegates worthy of this award although this year's Official Headshots were a disappointment! So I guess I will think a hundred times before deciding to vote for that delegate!

Yes. Karen has a big, big chance of making the semi-final cut come May 29. It seems she really knows how to play her cards right. The true test is during the Presentation Show-- this is a make-or-break situation for all of the 75 delegates.

Karen left the country last April 20 for Colombia. She trained with top Colombian couturier Alfredo Barraza. Her national costume and evening gown were both taken care of by Barraza. She is unarguably one of the most prepared delegates in Miss Universe this year. With these reasons in mind, we are assured Karen will put on a good show.

Let's just hope for the best and prepare for the worst.


Me thinks Thailand has better chances. And that is not so good a news.

Yeah same here... haay... if my memory serves me right, Evelina was only 20 when she competed last year. Eva naman was only 18...

Personally speaking, I believe Evelina gave the best answer during the final Q&A... however, malakas lang talaga yung dating ni Denise sa judges... she was destined to win talaga on that fateful night...

I was shocked when Denise won of course! It was the very 1st time kasi that a hometown queen (besides Miss USA of course) outside US soil to win...

Well, if Denise got away with winning in her own country last year, I believe Isis won't get away with it this year...

It was ok for Denise winning the crown, but i just hoped she did not hoard almost all of the minor awards. Well, I think Denise has charisma and you could her dedication to her work. You will see that she really worked hard for the crown, so no regrets for me. She had overall stage presence, and that was the type of gal Miss Universe was looking for that year. I won't think Evelina would be able to do half the work Denise has done if she won.

Yan lang talaga siguro ang isa sa mga problema ng mga delegates natin. mejo kinakabahan pagdating sa interview portion. i think dito rin sana mag focus and BPCI sa pagtrain ng mga future Binibinis.

As for me, Pebbles, Ruffa, Charlene, and Cara were dynamic and showed and proved to people that the Philippines is not being left behind.

Hello people!!!

Wow, Miss Universe fiasco is really getting hotter and hotter everyday. I'm sorry Karen was not part of the 40 goddesses' choice. I guess she wasn't very striking with her official headshot. Anyway, I'm happy that my favourite, Iva Lamarao, made it. And here's another news, her official headshot has been replaced with another picture (of the same instance) but of a different angle. I like this second shot better (which btw is now the official headshot). Although, in the first shot, she was smiling. Anyway, I just want to tell you guys na if you have a copy of the first headshot, HOLD ON TO IT. In a few year's time, it will be one of the rare pics in pageant history. I have both pics.

News has it that there are more headshots that might be replaced. I'm guessing they will replace Malaysia & Puerto Rico, as well as and maybe, Croatia and Curacao. Kung meron pang ibang mag change ng headshot, it's okay coz I have the original headshots of all the girls kasi i saved the HTML page of the Miss Photogenic voting when I voted yesterday. Anyway, enjoy the remaining days of Miss Universe. I must say that I'm glad they changed Portugal's headshot. Although, I'm not very happy about her curly hair (she looks very elegant in her straight hair), I'm still rooting for Iva. She has a light and bubbly personality and she may very well be a dark horse. And in the long run, she may even be this year's Evelyn Mikomagi.

Anyway, enjoy the remaining days of Miss Universe. I must say that I'm glad they changed Portugal's headshot. Although, I'm not very happy about her curly hair (she looks very elegant in her straight hair), I'm still rooting for Iva. She has a light and bubbly personality and she may very well be a dark horse. And in the long run, she may even be this year's Evelyn Mikomagi.

Regarding her evening gown during the prelims, she scored a terribly-degrading 8.42! She wore that red floral tube gown... tapos naka-bun yung hair niya. Ang ganda-ganda niya... Sayang nga talaga... Fabiola's countrymen were really expecting her to make it to the semi-finals to make up for her predecessor's failure a year ago in their own country... sayang...

Any word pala in Portuguese ending in "ao" is pronounced correctly as "an" and vice versa...

Examples:

Sao Paulo- "San Paulo"
Japan- "Japao"

Kaya it follows na Iva's surname is correctly pronounced as "Lamaran" and not "Lamarao" as it is spelled literally... :)

Lara and I did a comparative study and analysis on this matter eh...

-TURKEY prioritizes Miss World. Cagla Kubat (the Turkish bet for MU2002) was only 1st runner-up in her national pageant. The winner traditionally goes to MW. It has more semi-finalists in MW than it has in MU.

-ISRAEL elects its representatives for MU, MW, MI in just one pageant. The highest position so to speak is the "Universe" title of course. (just like Bb. Pilipinas) I think it prioritizes both MU and MW since it already won once in both pageants kaya it has an equal perspective on both of them. Saka mas maganda ang performance ng Israel in MU in general.

-MALAYSIA holds separate pageants for its MU, MW and MI representatives. However, it sends more stunning reps to Miss World than it does to Miss Universe. Kaya it is evident that it indeed prioritizes Miss World. The first and only time Malaysia made it in MU was in 1970 pa! Tapos in Miss World naman, it made it to the semi-finals thrice during the 90's... (Rahima Yayah in 1994, Arianna Teoh in 1997 and Pick Lim Lina Teoh in 1998) I'm just not sure during the 80's, 70's and 60's...

-INDONESIA, naman, kahit hindi natutuloy ang pagsali sa kahit anong pageant abroad ay priority pa rin nito ang Miss Universe. Chelsi, Brooke, Lara and Denise even went to Jakarta to crown the Putri (Miss) Indonesia winner during their respective years as reigning Miss Universe titleholders!

-SRI LANKA used to prioritize MU... until, for unknown reasons, stopped sending representatives beginning the year 1996. It still sends reps to Miss World and Miss Asia Pacific to date.

-NEPAL has never joined MU or MI. It presently sends reps to MW.

-VIETNAM joined MI in 1997... If I'm not mistaken, that's the 1st and only time it ever sent a rep to any international pageant existing. Earlier this year it was reported that it plans of joining MU soon upon the invitation of the Miss Universe Organization.

-HONG KONG, even if it was absent for 2 consecutive years in MU, still prioritizes MU... The highest title is the "Universe" title. Just like Pinas, Korea and India, Hong Kong selects its MU, MW and MI reps in just 1 pageant.

-TAIWAN / R.O.C. prioritizes MU. Since it joined it in 1961 (or 1962 I'm not sure), it has religiously been sending reps. Well, it also sends reps to MW however mas mataas ang competition level nung reps nila sa MU. This year, it has decided not to send a rep since China has managed to make its way into MU. I hope it sends a rep next year para the more the merrier, di ba?

-MACAU ceases to send reps to MW. It clearly prioritizes MW over MU. Right now it only sends reps to ME. (I'm not 100% sure though.)

one thing ive noticed with our representatives... ours are always poised, and countries like mexico, puerto rico and venezuela, they have some kinda spunk when they are on stage na. compare the stage presence of miriam and ms puerto rico or mexico back in miss u '99 (sorry forgot the name). and compare zora to denise. parang our girls are ladylike when they walk, while others e pa-girl...

miss venezuela is one girl to beat, she is so gorgeous and really knows how to play with camera. as for miss mexico, i still have doubts. she is exotic yes, with make up. but without it, she's the average. i like miss thailand though i dont know if she's fluent in english. karen is gorgeous but there are some pics that shows she accesorize too much ...

Yeah, Cynthia is definitely out to kick some butts. She was clearly sent to win. It seems Osmel is hungry na for Venezuela's 5th Miss Universe crown-- and it seems he want it so bad this year. I love Cynthia's costume kahit na dull and monotonous...

I'm also not impressed at all with Miss Mexico. May mali at kulang sa kanya eh... I know for a fact na mas marami pang magaganda sa Mexico who can give Venezuela and India a real run for their money... oh well...

Miss Thailand is cute and pretty... but she's more of the mahinhin type of beauty... In a pageant were fierce and tough competition exists, mahinhin beauties are sure to be butchered alive... Let's wait na lang for Janjira's Presentation Show performance and see if she truly has what it takes to make it to the Top 10...

Yeah I agree again... minsan nakaka-turn off talaga whenever our reps accessorize too much. Mas maganda yung simple lang pero malakas ang dating! I hate to compare but remember Miriam's simple and humble fashion sense way back in MU99? Ganun dapat lagi para refreshing... :)

-All 75 delegates will model their respective national costumes. A judging panel will vote for the Top 3 best costumes and will award 2nd runner-up, 1st runner-up and the eventual winner of this category.

PRESENTATION SHOW

-All 75 delegates competed in identical Bluepoint swimsuits and evening gowns of their own choice. A preliminary judging panel will score them all. The Top 10 will be secretly chosen during this event but will only be revealed during the Live Telecast on May 29.

-Also during this event, the Arpeggio Photogenic Award winner will be announced. The winner was voted by everyone who visited www.missuniverse.com and voted for their favorite delegate.

>> On saturday, the 75 delegates will pre-tape the opening number in the streets of Old San Juan wearing their national costumes. The spectacular production is said to have the participation of more than 400 people.

>> The preliminary competition will not be aired live on television. Instead, a taped version of it will be shown on Monday, May 27th.

>> Most delegates talk about how happy they are to be in Puerto Rico, thanks to the hospitality of the locals. "They really know how to make someone feel like royalty", one of the contestants said.

>> The Bluepoint Fashion show was a huge controversy during the week, as some delegates and press felt that is was not fair at all to the contestants that were not chosen. It also had to do with the fact that half the countries chosen, are the same countries that have been dominating the Miss Universe finals for the past 11 years.

>> Miss U.S. Virgin Islands, Merlisa George, is said to be a strong candidate for the Miss Congeniality award, due to her friendliness, sparkle and fun attitude toward the pageant.

>> Miss Czech Republic, Diana Kobzanova, ended in the pageant by an ironic fate; first she was supposed to compete in Miss World and didn't. Then she was going to travel to Miss Europe, but didn't feel secure about traveling to Lebanon, so she didn't participate. We are glad that at least she got the chance to travel and enjoy a once in a lifetime experience.

>> Miss Honduras, Erika Ramirez, has been compared to current Miss World, Agbani Darego from Nigeria. Darego was also a semifinalist in last year's Miss Universe pageant.

>> Miss Panama is delighted with admiration for Puerto Rico and its people. "It's so beautiful and very similar to Panama, and the people, they are so great, so cool, so warm, they have a lot of salsa!". As a good Panamanian ambasadress, she is already inviting everyone to join Miss Universe 2003 to take place in Panama City. Miss Puerto Rico 2003 can be sure that she will have the time of her life next year!

>> This year the preliminary competition will be back to alphabetical order (last year they were divided by geographical regions). There are 2 groups of 10 delegates, and 5 groups of 11 delegates, completing the 75. The introductions include the contestants yelling their names, and the countries they come from. Those rehearsals must be a party!

>> The delegates will be required to wear their national costumes three more times (last Sunday's photo shoot was the first time): During Saturday's pre-taping sessions, the official costume competition on Tuesday, and the Presentation Show on Friday. For the final telecast, they have been given outfits to wear for the live opening and the calling of the "Top 10". (Television viewers will get to see the delegates wearing their costumes).

>> Although it's official that a Top 10 will be chosen, lots of people are wishing that what happened in Miss USA 2002, happens in Miss Universe: There was a triple tie, and a Top 12 was called.

Too bad Maria failed to make the Top 10 cut in Miss Universe 1995... in fact, no European made it that year... Helen Lindes, on the other hand, still managed to charm her way to the Top 3 despite the "nudity" scandal she got into...

Yeah, whenever I see Vania, I only think of Lorena... siya dapat ang rep ng Spain eh! It's Lorena's fault din eh-- she gave up her crown in the very last minute. Oh well, there's no use crying over spilled milk... Let's support Vania na lang... I hope she does well on the Presentation Show...

Brenda Robles represented her native PUERTO RICO in Miss Universe 1994 here in Manila. Unfortunately, she failed to make the semi-final cut due to her poor preliminary evening gown and swimsuit scores.

Right after the pageant on May 21, 1994, it was revealed and reported that she was 2 months pregnant (not really 100% sure though) during the duration of the 3-week pageant. Reports have it that she immediately apologized to her national pageant organization.

Don't take those voting and ranking "games" by Global Beauties so seriously... After all, it's only done for the glory of fun... It has no bearing whatsoever on the chances or performances of the delegates...

...we should focus our attention more on the upcoming Presentation Show on Friday, May 24. This is the main determining factor on a specific delegate's chances of make it to the Top 10 or not... this is something definitely worth looking forward to...
