The article says that Cynthia's all set to wear this spectacular costume to Miss Universe 2002. The costume pays tribute to artist Yolanda Moreno.
Angel Sanchez used up 160 meters of cloth and nearly 2 hours just to finish the dress. It weighs 50 kgs-- roughly 150 lbs! Eccentric isabelino border was used to accessorize the dress. The article further stated that it was Cynthia herself who suggested that this costume be tight to enhance her figure more....

I just love it when former Spanish colonies like Venezuela turn to their rich culture when it comes to national costumes...
Breath-taking Venezuelan national costumes...

Since Miss Universe 2003 will be held in Panama (another former Spanish colony), what do you think should our rep's national costume should be?
I believe we should consult our mythologies, legends and history for some ideas...
Here are some characters that can serve as an inspiration to come up with a spectacular national costume...
Maria Makiling- Lara's suggestion
Ibong Adarna
Donya Victorina of Noli Me Tangere
Donya Consolacion of Noli me Tangere
Gabriela Silang
Princessa Urduja
Teodora Agoncillo
Here are some dances naman whose costumes can be used someday as a national costume...
Pandanggo Sa Ilaw
Tango
Flamenco
We can also revert to our stunning Muslim costumes...
Sarimanok
Yakan bridal dress
Manobo bridal gown
We can also revert to our costumes from the North...
Igorot tribal dress
Benguet matrimonial gown
Maybe we can also try our Chinese costumes...
Chinese New Year's Day dragon dresses
Chinese matrimonial dresses
Cheongsams
Our culture is so rich! We can never run out of ideas... :)

Oh yeah, it was worn particularly by the black slaves during the Spanish colonial era in Venezuela... this costume is called Manumisa Esclava... esclava means "slaved"... Manumisa might be the name of another character in Venezuelan literature.
No wonder it won 1st runner-up in the National Costume Show way back in MU99...

By the way, before anything else I just wanna say something...
Hindi ako nagsisi na we were once colonized by the Spaniards... to them we owe our colorful and rich culture, as well as our striking good looks... hehe
That's it! :)

Based on the descriptions posted on the Mabuhay MB, Karen's national costume might look like these...
This are not official photos or whatever ha... I just searched it sa net...
Knowing Alfredo Barraza's style, mas engrande at colorful pa dito... no more parasol for this year... one BIG, BIG shawl na lang daw...

Ah the ever so recognizable Venezuelan swimsuit pose- right hand on the hips and left hand on the side (or vice versa). Osmel has taught his girls well... but this two Venezuelan girls were the ones who executed it really well. Let's see if Cynthia can match them.

there are a number of delegates na iba na yung itsura kaysa sa mga nagkalat sa internet. i.e. Turkey, Finland, South Africa, India.
Oh well!!! Maganda pa rin naman sila. I was just used to their pictures from internet, which i appreciated.

Looking at the detail in the bodice, Charlene Gonzales added butterfly sleeves and a veil on this gown to make it her terno in the MU94 Santacruzan. Charlene was escorted by Monsour Del Rosario and Rudy Fernandez. I thought Pitoy Moreno made this gown...

Though Honduras doesn't send stunning girls, they try to make it up with the stunning costumes they made that would really rival the ones from Venezuela. They make you go agog!!! I wonder what costume Miss Honduras 2002 would wear... I assume they would want to bag the Best National Costume this year.

The 2002 Miss Universe pageant officially started on May 9, at 1:40 PM (Puerto Rico time) when Virginia “Gin” Ling Gridley, Miss Northern Marianas, became the first contestant to arrive to the International Airport of San Juan. Miss India arrived a few hours later, and yesterday, some other 50 ladies landed on the island of Puerto Rico. The remaining competitors will arrive today and tomorrow. Miss Venezuela, Cynthia Lander, will be the last contestant to get to her destination: She arrives on Sunday, on American Airlines flight 804, at 10:27 AM.

I remember when Jensie told me that back in 1993 when Dindi Gallardo was on her way to Mexico, she was wearing the Miss Universe delegate sash already at the NAIA. Probably borrowed it from Lisa Beroya. I guess this is what Miss Curacao 2002 did also.

:)
Yeah, Karen greatly improved. This marks the very 1st time our representative to Miss Universe received 100% pure Colombian training. Let's wait and see how Karen will do come May 29...
Unfortunately it's definitely too early to tell or even predict who will make it to the Top 10... I haven't even seen all of the delegates yet... there are so much things to consider pa before I can ever have my prediction list... This year is definitely a tough one... it's very difficult to come up with a Top 10 list... the Miss Universe 2002 pageant is just oozing with lots of stunners! :)

Oh yeah... hehe! Suot na nga nya yung Miss Universe delegate sash. I remember that send-off interview of Dindi with Star News... She was wearing a gray coat and a green blouse. Tapos yung earrings niya super laki-- yung talagang pang-Bb. Pilipinas! hehe.
All she said was she was "not promising anything daw to her fellow countrymen"... basta all she can say is she'll "do her best to bring home the MU93 crown"... Yun lang tapos may bouquet siya and she was sent off sa airport nila Ruffa (Bb. Pilipinas World) and Sheila Santarin (Bb. Pilipinas International)...

The 1980s format of the pageant is my all-time fave and by bringing some of its elements to the 1999 pageant, it's my favorite production in recent years. We also have to remember that the MU Organizers were very happy with the results of the 1994 production. :)

There are only 2 things of the 80's that I miss nowadays...
1. The Little Sisters and the immortal You Are My Star anthem...
2. Special production number with the reigning Miss Universe...
Yeah a lot of people were satisfied with the 1994 production... even the Mabuhay Opening Number had its share of praises.

:) Well, the thought of including Gloria and Margie in the opening spiel was just too much for me to imagine! They did not make the past Puerto Rican queens welcome us to the pageant last year.
What I feel bad about is that the recent productions have been focused too much on the hosts and the guest artists...well, it's the ratings game of course...

----------
Miss Dominican Republic is very beautiful and voluptious. When she arrived, everybody was amazed by her. She looks like a model; however, there is something about her that convinces me that she place among the semifinalists. Personally, I do not believe she will win.
Miss Colombia is a "black Barbie." When she got off the plane with Miss Philippines, nobody took their eyes off her - she is truly drop-dead gorgeous. I felt bad for Miss Philippines did not receive the attention Miss Colombia was getting. Vanessa arrived in a very fashionable outfit. She was very stunning, intelligent and amicable. I think she will be the next Miss Universe.
I'll keep you guys updated!

An angry Natascha turned around and promptly responded in English: "My mother is from Venezuela, I am GERMAN, I am Miss Germany, can't you read it on my sash??". Yeah... that song Mabuhay was written and composed by Ryan Cayabyab if my memory serves me right...
Alam ko our country has serious plans of hosting Miss Universe for the 3rd time if not in 2004, in 2005... I think 2005 kasi we are having our national elections in 2004 eh... siyempre mas uunahin naman yun ng gobyerno at media natin kesa sa Miss Universe...
I've also read before that there are plans of turning the Araneta Center into a world class and ultra-modern entertainment center, which aims of beating other centers of such kinds around the world... dun ata planong gawin ang next Miss Universe pageant dito sa Manila... I just dunno when this will materialize. Let's hope for the best... :)

TIDBITS FROM DAY 1 - 5/12
*Most of the girls appear a lot prettier in real life than in the pictures.
*There has been only one contestant who was a little bit arrogant, most girls are really nice.
*Aruba holds the record with the most suitcases: 20 pieces!
*Tonight is the Welcoming Dinner.
*People in Puerto Rico have been very warm and friendly, applauding us and saying hello to everyone.
*Rehearsals have not started yet.
*Everything has been very well organized and professional.
*This weekend all the contestants have been separated in groups to do the following:
1) Photo shoots - face, swimsuit and national customes
2) Interview Review: Website
3) Interview Review II: Long Format
4) Meeting with the doctor of the organization, a lady who is also staying at the hotel. The meeting's purpose is to find out if the girls have any special allergies.
5) They were also provided with the swimsuits for the photo shooting - dark gray - and for the ones for the competition.
6) Contestants tried their opening number jumpsuits on: some are black, others are gray, with silver details.

Wow! After a long absence, nakahanap din ako ng time to post here.
Grabe! Painit nang painit na talaga ang competition! RE "neglected" Karen vs. Miss Columbia, ok lang yan. At least, our "manok" can surprise us more when she shines later, just like Miriam. what to do e talagang stunning si Miss C.! But I know Karen still has a lot of aces tucked in her sleeves, and I bet alam yun ni Miss C.
Zack: I believe those Ash pics are from the soon-to-be-released Devdas, right? The other girl in the pic is Bollywood legend Madhuri Dixit. Incidentally, Devdas was supposed to be Ash and Sush's (Sen) first movie together. Perfect pa naman daw sana si Sush sa role because Sush is Bengali and so is the character. Sush had to beg off becuase she has so many commitments. She has already released 3 films in the first 5 months, the lastest being Aankhen, a certified hit, where she plays a teacher blackmailed to teach 3 blind men to rob a bank. She has been getting rave reviews with her performances.
RE Miss Earth, Justine, (candidate no. 22, Miss Water?) deserved to win. The winner gave a very apples-oranges answer. Other wise, she was also beautiful. In fairness, the Miss Earth candidates looked better than the Bb. Pilipinas candidates.
Any news re Cynthia Lander?

Unfortunately, pictures of Karen's evening gown and national costume have not been released for public consumption. All we have to do is wait for May 21 (National Costume Presentation Show) and May 24 (Presentation Show). This is Madame Araneta's strategy... a news blackout regarding Karen's preparations and wardrobe selection has been enforced since she left for Colombia last April 20...
Magugulat na lang daw tayo lahat... :)

Hi maniacal!
Well, that's what Belleza Venezolana reported yesterday. I just can't confirm or deny if Oksana's already in San Juan.
She was in Los Angeles, about to board her connecting flight en route to San Juan when she encountered problems regarding her visa.

Thank you Zorah for all the hard work! :)

Yeah, Nina Ricci's national costume is an entirely different story... it was more of a national insult and not a national costume... and yeah, she was oozing with talent and yet she was never given the chance to express herself in full detail... oh well...

Actually, okay lang yung National Costume, kasi the rules suggest that the costume is to depict something significant about your nation, and in the process promote it. Her statement to the press was that it represents the latest American Hero.
11 attacks. Ang pathetic na nila. As in kung saan-saan na lang puro in commemoration of Sept.11 attacks.

Yeah, Zorah explained to me before that a specific country's image in the international arena has so much to do with its inclusion into the semi-finals. She further admitted the Miss Universe is a "political" pageant... kaya naisip-isip ko, malas talaga nung year 2000... dahil sa ILOVEYOU virus and sa launch ng attacks of the Abu Sayyafs... sirang-sira image natin abroad... and I believe it had a big, big role in Nina Ricci's failure to make the semi-final cut... oh well...

Yeah me too... actually I smell something fishy with that statement of hers... mali nga ata... coz it was 1995 back then, and if she said it was the 25th anniversary at that moment, she's clearly pertaining to 1970 as the year the right to suffrage was honored, di ba?
Pero the dress doesn't look like it came from the 1970's... it looks more like it came from the 1920's... di ba?

Hehe, medyo nerdy pero nag research ako kung kailan nga nagkaroon ng Right to Suffrage ang American Women.
The long article I saw simply concludes that "...the Nineteenth Amendment was officially added to the United States Constitution on August 26, 1920..." This amendment indeed gives the Right to Suffrage to women.
Ang tagal naman ng official delegate headshots. Marami pa kasing delegates ang wala masyadong exposure. ie, Russia, Albania & Italy. And most especially, Portugal.

The long article I saw simply concludes that "...the Nineteenth Amendment was officially added to the United States Constitution on August 26, 1920..." This amendment indeed gives the Right to Suffrage to women.

Sorry, but Chelsi Smith's costume was from late 19th to early 20th century attire, not coming from the 1920's.

We, representing the countries of the world, in the Miss Universe Pageant, In order to carry the cause of peace, justice and mutual understanding, do solemnly dedicate ourselves to the highest ideals of sportsmanship, friendship and goodwill among all the people of the universe.
It was first recited during the Miss Universe 1960 by outgoing Miss Universe, Akiko Kojima. The last time that it was read was in 1990 by Angela Visser, Miss Universe 1989.

Question: Does Ms. Mauritius speak French? I watched Miss World 2001 last year and I think I heard Miss Madagascar speak in French. Geographically, Madagascar's proximity to Mauritius is like 890 KM. So does it also follow that these two countries speak the same language? Curious lang...

Yes, the official language of Mauritius is French. Actually, I noticed iba ang pagka French ng Mauritius, much slower and mas maganda pakinggan. Mahinhin ba... especially when you here them speak English with their French accents, ang lambing.

Actually the shawl is the flowery thingy, I think. But you can't really appreciate Karen's costume here kasi nasa beach siya at halatang ayaw niya malagyan ng sand ang costume niya kaya. We will see her costume in full glamour anyway sa official pics.

Arene Cecilia Amabuyok—Philippines (5th), Mirey Zamir—Israel (3rd), Penelope Plummer—Australia (Miss World 1968), Kathleen Winstanley—United Kingdom (2nd), Beatriz Sierra Gonzalez—Colombia (4th).
http://www.globalbeauties.com/gb/world/images/w68_phi.jpg
Penelope was the first Australia to ever win a major international beauty pageant. The favorites though were Miss Israel (best odds to win the crown) and a nun - Miss Philippines. Cecelia Amabuyok was the most popular girl among the contestants. At a banquet given by the male members of Britain’s Variety Club, the men whistled, stamped their feet and hoisted her on a table, several cheering her as “Miss World 1968.” She was actually the first Roman Catholic nun to be in a beauty contest. Her Mother Superior was furious after she secretly entered and won the Miss Republic of the Philippines contest. Cecilia managed to convince the convent sisters that she would bring them honor - “Now everyone will know that nuns can be beautiful and nice, too” - and she was finally granted four weeks’ leave of absence. Miss Philippines finished in 5th place while Miss Israel was second.

Thanks for posting this here. :)
Miss Amabuyok started our semi-final streak in the Miss World pageant.
4 years later in 1972, Evangeline "Eva" Reyes made the semi-final cut in London. The next year, another Evangeline, "Vangie" Pascual, narrowly missed what could have been our 1st ever Miss World crown by placing 2nd overall to Marjorie Wallace of the United States...
Unfortunately strong contenders Joy Conde and Peachy Veneracion withdrew from the Miss World '76 and '77 (not sure) pageants respectively due the rising issue of apartheid and racism concerning South Africa... a lot speculated that these 2 could have put on a good show had they not withdrawn...

Si Zorah na din ang may sabi na Miss Universe is a political pageant! So MUO might give China a chance of entering the Top Ten this year para naman bumalik sila sa pag compete next year! And remember those countries who join for the first time are usually making waves in MU. Silvia Lakatosova did it for Slovak Republic in MU 1994. And so did Mpule Kwelagobe in winning Miss Universe 1999 pa.
Don't shun the saying that it ain't over till the fat lady sings! Every delegate has a chance! Peace!

Well, yeah yun nga lang... politics, politics, politics... this is what scares me... With politics around, kahit mga hindi deserving ay nakakapasok sa Top 10... yun ang nakakasira, yun ang nakakatakot... yun ang nakakadismaya... and this is indeed a reality...
Colombia, Republic of China, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic and Botswana... What do they have in common? All of them made the semi-final cut during their 1st year in Miss Universe... and Colombia and Botswana even went on to win their 1st ever Miss Universe crowns...
With politics around, I won't be surprised nga talaga if the very same thing happens to China...

could not believe the day when I would see CHINA written in the Miss Universe delegate sash. Well it's a good thins they joined, but because of that, Taiwan backed out. Wishing someday these two countries would be seen in Miss Universe together
uhoh...be careful...by saying that Taiwan and China are two countries is politically incorrect!
i think china looks good...typical chinese look...she may not have the x-factor pero pretty naman...
di pa rin ako convinced kay venezuela...as in! di pa rin ako nagagandahan sa kanya eh...ang haba talaga ng mukha nya
I think the gals with x-factors are : colombia and france...di maganda france pero parang meron syang isang classic eyes...*** tipong may far away look ..reverie look in the eyes ba tawag dun.

You are oh so right! Taiwan is considered a renegade province of the government of the People's Republic of China! And that for them, Chinese Taipei is more appropriate than Taiwan, Republic of China!

Actually it's only China that considers Taiwan a renegade province. A lot of countries consider them as two seperate countries. China is just a bully kasi eh.

I don't think so.. There are lots of countries that are observing the One-China Policy! Our country is one of those countries that observed the said policy!

Ah ok. I guess so, yeah I'll take your word for it since your course is related to that. I guess why a lot of countries see the One China policy is because China is bully- a big country kasi eh and Communist pa. But I don't get it why they got away with it back in 1994 in Miss World when China and Taiwan sent a delegate.

Yeah, China is really aggressive! That's why a lot of countries observed the said policy. Regarding Miss World 1994 where both China and Taiwan sent their representatives, I guess (my humble guess...) that China's government wasn't too particular with that. Oh well, I could be wrong. But who knows?!
My concern now is the 2008 Beijing Olympics. What's goin to happen? Will Taiwan boycott the Olympiad? Haaayy... politics!

Oh well, sana she wouldn't feel left out pag dating niya.

It's not in being mataray, she had Visa problems. And it's a very good thing Miss Universe did that because it shows that they really value every single delegate. It would be improper if she was left out. And if they released the official delegate shots without her, then she would not have a fair advantage for the Miss Photogenic award.

An article about Miss Jamaica, it seems she was given what her island has to offer.
Robing the Queen
If Sanya Hughes' passion is retail therapy, then her wardrobe to Puerto Rico should allow her the perfect opportunity to indulge. It is perhaps the most extensive wardrobe ever, for any beauty queen leaving Jamaica. Sponsors, family, friends and well-wishers were not only thrilled last week Wednesday evening at the Penthouse roof at Pulse's 38A abode to wish the reigning Miss Jamaica Universe, Sanya Hughes, bon voyage, but were satisfied that her wardrobe affords her the ability to be totally confident at all of her many engagements. Local fashion houses, have certainly given the 19 year-old their own vote of confidence by providing her with the best of their collection for her three-week stay in Puerto Rico. Hughes' ensemble includes outfits for casual days, and nights, cocktail parties, dinners and formal events.
Sanya modelled her well-fitting, beautifully co-ordinated pieces well. Pieces which she'll wear alongside those of the 80 delegates as she travels through Puerto Rico, attending the national gift auction, the national costume shows as well as the preliminary competition.
The evening's show zipped several times, as the Ocho Rios-based team of Carl Williams and Mark McDermott from Uzuri showed their super sharp scissors. Sanya wore two of their form-fitting gowns. Gowns which sat perfectly still on the queen ó cut to enhance an already perfect body, the eveningís lights adding the final seams as they bounced off the lurex. When Hughes made her final entrance in a spectacular national costume, dubbed Ocho Rios Fiesta which depicts Jamaica's first inhabitants, the Taino Indians, it was to much applause. The costume was made from burlap, with a combination of jippi-jappa straw, madras bandana and raffia combined with sequins, beads, rhinestones, healing rocks and other decorative details.
The creation is said to reflect the melting pot of Jamaica's motto "Out of many one people". The tall plumes, bowing gracefully, atop her head was her final exit from the shores of Jamaica -- at least for now.
Sanya's trunk also includes designs from local designers Asanti Collection, Siim, and Roger Gary; and from local boutiques including Ammars, Lees, Max Brown, Eurowear, Outre, Profile and Just In Boutiques. In New York Sanya picked up several pieces from Barani, some of which were modelled Wednesday night. Jewellery is provided by The Royal Shop and Gem Palace. Beachcombers is also in the mix. Sanya's feet will be heeled by Heart and Sole.

Well they should be less of a bully from now on. They don't want the 2008 Olympics to be a total flop. hehehe Remember back in 1980 when USSR hosted the Olympics, a lot of countries, boycott the event with the US as being the most vocal among the countries who made the boycott.

Peace!
Correct me if I'm wrong. The name of the candidate who represented Miss Indonesia is Alya Rohali. Nagkaroon yata ng issue ito sa Indonesia nang malaman nila na sumali sa Miss Universe si Alya Rohali because na bawal sa kanilang religion which is Islam. Indonesia joins Miss Universe for the first time in 1996. Bakit di napili ang Indonesia sa 10 finalist ng Miss Universe 1996 since na first time itong sumali?

It wasn't the first time Indonesia joined Miss Universe. They also sent a delegate back in 1995, and before that during the 80's or 70's they would also send a delegate. Medyo hypocrite and Indonesian government eh, medyo magulo sila. A lot of Muslim countries send delegates in Miss Universe. From what I've heard, back in 1996 kakasuhan ata si Miss Indonesia back then ng government niya or she was told she could join but she should join the swimsuit competition. Sobrang irony, that a lot of Miss Universe winners would always go to Indonesia during the Miss Indonesia competition, but they could not send the winner to Miss Universe. Basta the Indonesian government are still stuck in a time warp.

Im not familiar with how they got away with it but if they have rephrased Taiwan in such a way that it seemed to be an autonomous province like Hong Kong, they could get away with it. Case in point is in the Olympics, Hong Kong is also represented in the Olympics but they are not announced as the country of Hong Kong or something to that effect but more of an autonomous province of China.
Im kinda poor in history but up to this date, the people of Taiwan are still divided with their beliefs of the right to be independent or the right to be absorbed again by China. As far as I remember, the first ever Taiwanese govt was held by the retreated defeated nationalist army troops during the civil war so technically, they are Chinese citizens but they have exile themselves to a territory of China wherein they establish their own government and announced themselves as a country. So there, that is one reason that the countries don't want to recognize Taiwan as a country. Well...of course, the political colorings might come in too.
Anyhus...back to the pageant...di pa rin nagbago ang pose ni karen :glee: pero pag tinabi mo pala sya kay colombia dyan sa pix (like the swimsuit pix posted), may laban sya kay ms.colombia :Beam: imo.
