Sorry, no latest pics of Karen have been released yet. Hopefully she'll pass by Venezuela this week before flying to San Juan on May 10. If ever this pushes through, top Venezuelan photographer Daniel Alonso will take her makeover pics. Daniel is the very same guy who takes pics of the Miss Venezuela titleholders and contestants. He also took pics of Miriam, Lalaine and Zorah when they all trained with Osmel Sousa during their respective years...

Please understand that there is a news blackout on Karen's preparations and wardrobe selection because this is Madame Stella Araneta's strategy... This matter has been confirmed to me just last night... What BPCI wants is for us all to be surprised na lang come the Presentation Show on May 24...

I don't think RPN 9 will show any Miss Universe Primer. The very last time a primer of such kind was aired was a day before the Miss Universe 1995 pageant (May 12, 1995, Friday, 9PM). ABC 5 aired this primer showing all the 82 delegates in Windhoek, Namibia. Out bet back then, Joanne Santos, was fine... but not really a stunner or babe...

I just wanted to share na kaninang morning (around 6:45-8:00), I was looking for something to watch when I suddenly landed on Channel 13 (Star Mandarin Channel) sa Destiny Cable...

It was a Chinese movie (Sorry I dunno the title) shot in Hong Kong and Manila... Guess who's the bida? None other than Bb. Pilipinas UNIVERSE 1982 Isabel Lopez! The movie was shot during the mid-80s...

The story was about a Chinese gambler based in HK. He then came to Manila to buy a Filipino wife... Take note "buy" ha... Until he found Isabel (Wendy sa movie)... He brought her with him to HK to be an "amah" (a maid)... Utusan, sunud-sunuran... Until they finally fell in love...

Parehong nakaka-degrade at nakakatuwa yung movie... Nakaka-degrade coz ang baba talaga ng tingin ng karamihan ng mga foreigners in general sa mga Pinay... isipin mo maid pala ha! Of all roles... beauty queen ang kinuha nilang actress to play the role of an abused maid!!! Di ba nakakainis?!?!

Nakakatuwa naman dahil super impressed sila sa exotic beauty ng Pinay... Imagine... choosing Isabel over other Chinese actresses to star in the film! I believe it's an honor na din. Napaka-exotic ni Isabel sa movie! No wonder she really won Bb. Pilipinas Universe!

It may sound as if I'm contradicting my own self ha... pero I just really have mixed emotions about this movie...

But in fairness to her, she had a good interview score in the prelims. Miss Universe 1995 had a high scoring preliminary contest and so Joanne landed on the 16th spot. If she competed in either 1993 or 1994, she could have secured a spot in the semis for herself...

Miriam's case was an entirely different one. We only knew she had been under Osmel Sousa a day after she placed 2nd overall to Mpule Kwelagobe. Prior to that, no one really gave a damn what she went through. And yun ang mas maganda-- walang hype, walang publicity, and most of all walang expectations whatsoever from anyone... :)

Yeah, even Nina Ricci herself was very, very disappointed with that golden Barraza gown. She was not comfortable with the fitting-- the color was not really that impressive and the tad was way too short. She even demanded last minute adjustments, but to no avail. She had to wear it to the Presentation Show by hook or by crook... And her national costume was a real mess... it was more of a "national insult" than a national costume...

Zorah, on the other hand, was very satisfied with her evening gown, wardrobe and national costume (of course) during last year's pageant. Moreover, she was grateful to Osmel for "an experience of a lifetime" at La Quinta... She found him to be very "kind and fatherly".

This year will be entirely different. Miss Colombia Vanessa Mendoza was exclusively handled by top couturier Jaime Arango, leaving Karen to be exclusively handled and pampered by just one designer... Mas nakapag-concentrate daw talaga si Alfredo this year... talagang he gave his 100% best just to one woman... unlike last year, divided ang talent and attention niya kina Zorah and Andrea Noceti... kaya expect a better output this year...

Don't expect any of Karen's wardrobe or gowns to be presented to the press just like what Erika Cruz, Isis Casalduc, Cynthia Lander, Deyanira Frank and Vanessa Mendoza did... It ain't gonna happen... Come May 24, during the Presentation Show, magugulat na lang daw tayo!!!

Well not really childish... hindi lang siya talaga mashadong "polished" for the pageant. She could have done better pa sana... Her preliminary swimsuit performance was a mess-- dun siya nadali...

During the Bb. Pilipinas '95 pageant, Joanne was the real contender for the Bb. Pilipinas Universe crown... Her toughest opponent, Reham Snow Tago (who eventually went to Miss World) was way too short and she stuttered during the Final Q&A... Joanne won not only because she was young (only 18), but also because of her height advantage. She was one of the tallest in that batch. She stands 5 feet 10 inches. Saka during the Coronation Night on March 12, 1995, she aced all her interviews.

During the Top 15 Q&A portion, an American judge asked her, "Would you pose in front of an artist who wants to do a nude painting of you?"... Joanne replied with confidence and wit... "No, because I'm a Filipina and I'm very conservative".... This was the answer that catapulted her to the Final 5... the rest was history...

During the Miss Universe 1995 pageant, Joanne almost won the Congeniality Award. She was narrowly beaten by Miss Nigeria Toyin Hajit Raji by just a couple of votes! Joanne grew up exposed to a beauty parlor environment back in Pampanga kaya mahilig siya talagang mag-ayos ng buhok at tumulong sa pagme-make up... this was what she did daw to her fellow delegates during the duration of the pageant kaya she gained a lot of friends...

Joanne's evening gown got a very, very high score during the preliminaries! It got a 9.22! Even Charlene Gonzalez' ball gown a year earlier wasn't able to beat that score. Charlene's gown only got a 9.08... Among all Filipina bets for Miss Universe during the entire 90's (when the preliminary scores appeared on TV screens during the live telecast), Joanne was the one who received the highest evening gown score ever during the prelims... Aileen Damiles' red gown only got a 9.06 while Abbygale Arenas' blue ball gown got a terribly-low 8.81... I think the rest got 8's...

We really love the gown of Miriam Q. in MU'99. It is very elegant and she carried it well. I hope Karen will have a gown like that. Sayang Nina Ricci didn't make it to the top 10 coz she has the brains, the body and beauty but the gown isn't really nice for her. :p

Just want to share, though Miss Universe 1998 is considered the WORST Miss Universe ever (because of the changes). It is considered one of the if not the best year in terms of calibre of candidates!!! I haven't seen a STRONG batch such as this, though mahirap din this year, it's still not as good as in 98. There were so many beautiful women who left out that year and I don't get it why the likes of South Africa 98, Russia 98 and even Colombia (I don't find her beautiful) were included in the top 10. Were you able to watch Points Of View last night? It was all about the relevance of beauty pageants in the country today. Among their guests were:

Gemma Cruz-Araneta - Miss International
Margie Moran - Miss Universe
Gilrhea Quinzon - libido girl
Renee Salud - talent discoverer and fashion designer

It was a very enlightening and entertaining conversation! I wish lang talaga that Nina Ricci Alagao was there to provide more insights and educated views, unlike Gilrhea who was virtually "pipi" especially when Gemma Cruz was already speaking her mind. Ano naman ang panama niya diba?

Margie Moran is as beautiful as ever. Gemma is her elegant self. Mama Renee gave comic relief and funny remarks to offset Gemma's otherwise "stiff" viewpoints.

I even won their promo backpack for texting my "point of view".

Says Gemma, during her time, world events and politics played a very important role in pageant victories. She alleges that Miss Finland 1952 Armi Kuusela-Hilario won the very first Miss Universe title because Finland was the first country to pay its debts to the United States after World War II. In her case, the U.S. was convincing the Philippines to send troops to the Vietnam war and that was a major factor in the final judging.

Could it be true???

Yeah, you're right Lara... there were a lot of breath-taking and mesmerizing delegates during MU98... it's really unfortunate that out of the 81 beauties, only 10 had to be chosen... I wonder how those judges sleep at night... :)

In my opinion, 1998 was the year that Argentina, Japan, Uruguay, Ecuador and Hong Kong sent their BEST EVER delegates and yet they were all ignored by the judges... oh well... I strongly believe may panahon din ang mga countries na ito...

Vía telefónica, Montoro se mostró muy satisfecho por los resultados obtenidos con el diseño. 'Marianela es una muchacha con mucho porte y elegancia, lo cuál hace mi trabajo más fácil' dijo Montoro.

I like Karen in this evening gown. It's classy, elegant and not typical. I just think na kapag yung classic white or black ang colour ng gown niya, hindi siya mag standout. Oh yes! sa dami ng stunners, masasapawan si Isis for sure... Yeah, all of the dresses that Isis will be wearing were copied/patterned/adapted from other gowns that past queens wore... It's a shame, really... tsk tsk... Definitely a WRONG move by Puerto Rican designer Angel Olivera...

anyway, may kuha na ba kayo ng latest ni karen? mukhang tinatago pa siya hanggang ngayon. yung ibang countries, lalo na yung mga latinas, may mga photos na sila ng mga candidates nila pati susuotin sa MU pageant. oh well, im just confident with karen na she will do well in puerto rico. i cant wait to see her national costume with a big big shawl. :D

Last night I dropped by Starbucks in San Antonio Plaza, Forbes park for my caffeine dose. Guess kung sino ang bumulaga sa akin??? It was your friend ZORA ANDAM!!!! She was waiting pala for Maricarl Tolosa. I think they went to the wedding reception inside the Parish complex that evening. Zorah was wearing a lace and brocade gown and her diamonds. She is very stunning pala! Sayang coz she did not make it last year. Maganda and very Pinay ang dating. She looks a bit like model Eazel Don pag malayo. Even Tolosa is pretty.

For the first time after so many years the gown of Miss India wasn't made by Hermant Travedi. Neha's gown was designed by Shahab Durazi and it would be color purple. Ritu Kumar made her costume and Indian ensembles, Ashley Rebello provided her western cocktail and party dresses. And her "jaw" was re-aligned too- whatever that means.

Just like what has traditionally been non-stop since 1992, expect India to enter the Top 10 this year. She is assured at least of a Top 10 slot... Don't underestimate "purple" as her gown's color... we know for a fact that Indian designers in general are oozing with talent and creativity.

I particularly hated the red assymetrical gown that Lara wore in Cyprus. It's too "westernized" na nga... I prefer Celina's gown by a landslide!

With feverish excitement, Neha Dhupia boarded her flight to Puerto Rico early this morning. When Bombay Times met her, she was in the middle of packing her five big Samsonites with her mum and also her stylist Komal Shahani helping her. She smiled her bright smile, and to think that just a few hours ago she was at Dr Sandesh Mayekar’s clinic getting her smile fixed. “Mayekar has made me brave. I was so scared when I first sat in that chair and he injected me four times. It was like taking an afternoon nap. So easy. Before I knew it, he had aligned the length of my canines,” says Neha.


Whether it’s her diction or her looks, Neha’s all prepared. Sabira Merchant is already impressed with the way her student’s speaking. Make-up experts Doris and Bharat Godambe have made sure they teach her the tricks of their trade. The result? In three days flat, Neha is like a trained make-up artist. “They taught me how to fix my wigs and do my face. As a model, I used to just sit in front of the mirror and not worry about how it was done.”


It’s been a hectic schedule for the Miss Universe participant. She’s hardly had any time. In fact, she wasn’t really keen on posing for pictures or giving interviews because she was engrossed in her sessions with dietician Anjali Mukherjee, and her skin care person, Dr Jamuna Pai. And hair expert Apurva Shah’s made sure she has a great mane. As she spends her time in Puerto Rico preparing for the final, she will stroll around in fascinating casuals from Ixtapa and Indian wear from Gimmicks. Her already sculpted body looks even better with her workouts at Moksh and Regent.


While her stylist Komal tells her abour her Regal shoes about which shade will go with which outfit, Neha carefully puts away her Indian costumes by Ritu Kumar. “The Indian outfits are getting me really excited because that’s what make us unique. No other contestant will wear such outfits. But I am as thrilled with my evening gowns that have been specially designed by Shahab Durazi. Ashley Rebello, too, has done a good job with my cocktail and party wear,” says Neha.


They may have all done their jobs but the rest is in Neha’s hands. And she knows that it’s no easy task. “My dad is a commander in the Navy, but he says watching me compete will be more nerve-wrecking than being at war,” says Neha.


Neha, all packed by now, confesses, “I have left a little space in my bag to bring the crown back. Even God gives you three chances in life but these pageants give you just one.”

I'm sorry but the Miss Universe Presentation Show would not be shown outside Puerto Rico. But you would be able to watch the Miss Universe finals live on CBS at 9pm (New York time) on May 29. Check your local listings.

Unfortunately, the Miss Universe 2002 Presentation Show will be aired live ONLY in Puerto Rico. Local television station Televicentro de Puerto Rico will air the event live on May 24, 2002, Friday. The event will take place at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum.

Only the Live Telecast will be aired by CBS. It starts promptly at 9PM (Eastern Standard Time) on May 29, 2002, Wednesday.

Larissa was the sure winner... until the Top 5 Q&A, where she CHOKED BIG TIME when asked if the media's need for controversy was bad for sports. She also could not come with the name of a female athlete claiming that she was a Art major and not a sports fan. The judges had no pity. I agree! It remains a big mystery up to this very moment. Even her overall preliminary ranking was never released for some unknown reasons...

Here are the 2 theories that I have gathered...

1. Nina Ricci aced all her interviews. In fact, prior to her departure for Nicosia on the 3rd week of April 2000, she even took a crash course in Greek- the official language of Cyprus. She charmed both the local and international press and as well as the judges. Her wit and eloquence would always be remembered and there are no questions on that.

The problem originated from her swimsuit and evening gown performances.

Nina Ricci, as we all know, is a professional make-up artist. The big mystery is... why on earth did she have excessive make-up during the Presentation Show? Her hair was a mess too... I did some research and found out that she was ordered to pattern her make-up and her looks (in general) after those of Latin beauties... specifically Venezuelan beauties... Imagine that!

We could not deny the fact that Nina Ricci was not so toned during the swimsuit competition. What happened to her? Way back during the Bb. Pilipinas pageant, she was at her best ever form- even better than her form during the Elite Model Look Philippines 1997 contest (Nina won 1st runner-up in that modelling pageant)! What happened the moment she set foot in Cyprus? It seems everything was taken away from her.

Her evening gown performance was fine... It mesmerized the whole planet, but it obviously failed to live up to judge's expectations. Again her hair and make-up were both a mess. Nina Ricci, herself, was not satisfied with the gown's fitting and demanded last minute adjustments from Colombian couturier Alfredo Barraza, its creator. Unfortunately, her requests weren't met and she had to wear the gown to the Presentation Show by hook or by crook. The gown's tad was way too short... parang bang bitin ang dating...

I strongly believe it was her preliminary swimsuit score that brought her down.

2. Another huge theory to consider is the ILOVEYOU virus incident that hit the whole world that coincided with peak of the Miss Universe 2000 pageant. To everyone's shock the crime was traced to the Philippines, which immediately gained notoriety. A lot of people were saying that Nina Ricci failed to enter the semi-finals because of the bad publicity that our country was getting during that time. It was also the point in time when the Abu Sayyaf was beginning their black propaganda to bring down the country's image.

Even Zorah revealed that the Miss Universe pageant is indeed a political pageant. A nation's reputation or "aura" has so much to do with a delegate's inclusion in the semi-finals. Nina Ricci, just like what she herself revealed, was a victim of bad politics. Sour graping as it may sound, it's true. Zorah also shared that Miss Israel Ilanit Levi and Miss France Elodie Gossuin only made the semi-final cut mainly because of the publicity they got weeks prior to the Live Telecast. It was the talk of the town in Puerto Rico.

Regarding Karen Agustin, I believe she just arrived in San Juan at this very moment. She was originally scheduled to fly there on May 10 (San Juan local time). Her trip to Venezuela was already aborted. Hence, there will be no Daniel Alonso makeover pics of her. Osmel Sousa also didn't get to train and drill her. It was Colombian couturier Alfredo Barraza who took care of everything. There was a news blackout on her preparations and wardrobe selection. This is Madame Araneta's strategy. No sketches or pictures of her evening gown, cocktail dresses or even national costume were released for public consumption. Magugulat na lang daw tayo lahat come May 24, during the Presentation Show!

After 5 years of absence, the traditional Volendam costume is back at the international world of pageantry. Kim Kötter, who left for Puerto Rico at 6 a.m. this morning (amsterdam time), decided she did not want to wear the 'windmill-dress' that had been used in Miss World since 1994. She wanted to bring back some old fashioned wooden shoes, white 'boeren'caps and of course the Dutch tulip.

The reason why the Miss Swedens ALWAYS wear the same yellow costume every year is because:

1983 - THE YEAR SWEDEN ESTABLISHED A NATIONAL DAY AND A NATIONAL COSTUME.
On the 6th of June 1983, Sweden celebrated its first National Day and on the same day a Swedish National Costume was introduced, modeled by Queen Silvia. Actually it existed since the 1900's, but the costume was not accepted as the National Costume until then.

Yeah I visit different Voy Forums everyday. I visit mabuhaybeauties.com too. Pero hindi ako member doon. Hindi rin ako nagpo-post ng kahit ano dun. I just go there to gather pictures.

I didn't post that Celina didn't hang out with other Asians... What I posted in American Beauty before was that Zorah rarely hanged out with her fellow Asians coz they didn't speak a word of English at all... Of all Asians, kay Miss India Celina Jaitley lang close si Zorah. Zorah got along better with the black delegates from Africa and the Caribbean. Her best friend was Miss South Africa Jo Ann Cindy Strauss. She voted for Miss US Virgin Islands Lisa Wynne during the Congeniality Award voting. Zorah was also close to Miss Nigeria Agbani Darego. They spent a lot of times together.

Yeah according again to Zorah, Celina had this "superiority complex" written all over her. She shared that there was once a breakfast incident wherein self-service ang motif. Celina shouted at the hotel attendants to get her a spoon and fork.... even the Latin delegates were kinda uncomfortable daw whenever Celina was around.

Zorah didn't bother asking for her overall preliminary ranking anymore. It doesn't matter naman na daw eh. Global Beauties was the one that reported that she ranked 27th overall among 77 beauties. However, this remains unofficial and most of all unconfirmed.

WOW! What a spectacular costume... Venezuela lang na naman ata saka Pinas ang may balloon-type na national costumes this year! Parang last year! hehe! :)

The name of her national costume is Doña Ana Teresa Matos de Guzmán, which took inspiration from the famous Venezuelan dancer herself.

Mabigat talaga yan unang-una coz ball gown ang style eh... pa-balloon... may support system pa yan underneath the skirt itself...

First comments about the delegates so far -- Angel Rodriguez, 02:01:13 05/11/02 Sat
Last day, as you guys know, girls from the entire world arrived to the island in order to take part of the pageant. So far, the delegates that I have seen are Aruba, D.R., Philippines, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Colombia, Peru, and T&T.
From what have seen, I have to say that I’m very impressed with some particular delegates, among them, Colombia (gorgeous, well dressed and very elegant, just perfect!), Aruba (never liked her pictures, but she looks radiant and beautiful, and she has excellent communication skills), Dominican Republic (very natural and beautiful, as well!), and the Philippines (very pretty, intelligent and elegant, she was asked by the local press about national issue of Vieques, but, unfortunately, the interview was interrupted).
These are early comments, I'll be back latter to update my impressions. Enjoy the pageant!

Elizabeth "Liza" Berroya... won the Bb. Pilipinas 1992 pageant because of her wit and charm... she was the lady that started my love for pageants. Un traje que rinde homenaje a Yolanda Moreno y a la herencia histórica de Cynthia Cristina Lander, la vestirá en la parada nacionalista del Miss Universo 2002, que se celebrará en Puerto Rico por segunda vez consecutiva.

Para estas horas, Miss Venezuela 2001 ya debe haber partido rumbo al concurso más importante de su tipo con un equipaje de tres maletas, entre ellas el vestido diseñado por José María Almeida, quien desechó las ideas rebuscadas para crear este traje que a su decir rinde homenaje a Yolanda Moreno, artista infaltable en los espectáculos del evento, y además a los 'genes' de Lander, descendiente de Ezequiel Zamora.

Almeida confeccionó este vestido de época, de 160 metros de tela, cuello alto y con un inusual ribete isabelino. La fantasía recuerda la usanza femenina del siglo XIX en tonos blanco y negro, con toques de pedrería. La propia Miss Venezuela 2001 le sugirió al diseñador que terminara el vestido con un escote más bajo y un talle más ceñido. La creación, a decir de Almeida, será su amuleto en el concurso.

El traje realza los atributos de la miss, quien luce mucho más espigada y delgada. Como toque final, lleva su pelo recogido y sostenido por un tocado de flores plateadas. El vestido pesa cerca de 50 kilos y Cynthia comentó que todo el proceso le lleva cerca de una hora entre maquillarse, peinarse y vestirse.

Al final de su desfile, Miss Venezuela soltará una frase: 'Vengo de la tierra de los libertadores y la esperanza', un abreboca para iniciar la competencia. Dice no temerle a las preguntas del jurado y espera que su inglés no la traicione esa noche. 'Me traigo la corona'.
