Just like what Lara said, Uruguayans are really not into pageants like their other South American counterparts, especially those from the North. Uruguay is one of the few South American nations without any winner from the Big 3... And didn't you notice, most Uruguayan reps to MU are half-Italians... this is due to the fact that Uruguay is the only South American nation that has been blessed with rich Italian culture and heritage due to the fact that a large number of Italians migrated there before... :)

She is Lada Aengchawadechaslip. She represented Thailand in Miss World 2001 held in Sun City, South Africa last November 16.

Lada is 21 years old and stands 5 feet 8 inches.

Lada was not able to join Miss Thailand Universe 2002 since she was still under an exclusive contract with the Miss Thailand World Organization as their reigning queen. She will crown her successor this coming July. I hope she joins MTU2003 in March next year.

Lada is currently studying at the University of California in Los Angeles, majoring in Economics. She speaks English, Thai and Spanish. Her ambitions are to open own business and travel around the world.

For all we know, she just might be Thailand's 3rd Miss Universe! :)

Neha Dhupia was crowned Fa Femina Miss India Universe 2002 last January 19. She will represent India in MU2002 set for May 29 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Neha is 21 years old and stands 5 feet 7 inches.

Neha made her first international appearance during the MTV Asia Awards in Singapore last February 2. She presented the Favorite Artist Hong Kong Award, which was eventually won by Sammy Cheng. She was invited to participated because she was the MTV Most Wanted winner during the Femina pageant.

Will Neha be India's 3rd Miss Universe? We'll all find out come May 29. Stay tuned. :)

Last year Simone Regis, the 3rd runner-up to Juliana Borges, was asked to compete at the first ever Miss Earth Pageant. We all know Simone placed second to Catharina Svensson of Denmark. Vanessa Mendoza: reina en jaque

A un mes de concursar en Miss Universo con un gran favoritismo, Vanessa Mendoza lucha entre sus deseos de realizar un reinado que le sirva a su gente, y sus ganas de liberarse de las estrictas reglas del Concurso.

Sonreía por compromiso, nada más. Como pocas veces, aquella mañana de enero hubiera querido estar en su Unguía, jugando en las calles destapadas con una pelota de goma, espiando uno de los cuatro televisores del pueblo. "Esto ya me está cansando", dijo, ya sin sonreír, y se metió en un lejano cuarto adyacente al estudio de fotografía de la revista Cromos, para que terminaran de maquillarla.

En media hora comenzaría una sesión más de fotos. Vanessa Mendoza se contemplaba ante el espejo mientras diligentes maquilladores hacían esfuerzos por disimular unas minúsculas ojeras, pero ella ante todo veía a la que se convertiría en su sombra desde el pasado 11 de noviembre: la chaperona Ekaterina Lombana.

Era ella quien la había despertado a las cinco y media esa mañana, como todas las mañanas, y era ella quien decidía qué podría comer, qué llamada era conveniente recibir y qué vestido le sentaba mejor. Tres días antes, la Señorita Colombia le había tenido que pedir permiso para pasar todo el 4 de enero con su madre. Lombana le respondió que ella creía que no habría problemas, pero que quien tendría la palabra final era Raimundo Angulo.

Sin embargo, la llamada al presidente del Concurso Nacional de Belleza se dilató. Cuando por fin se realizó, todos los planes de Vanessa Mendoza se frustraron: Raimundo Angulo decidió que el 4 de enero la reina tendría que posar para una portada de la revista Cromos. Y en esas estaba sobre el mediodía de aquel viernes, aunque no lo deseara. Había comenzado a sonreír, a posar y a obedecer, concentrada ante la cámara de Claudia Rubio y ya muy metida dentro de su papel. A ello se había comprometido desde el 12 de noviembre del 2001, cuando dejó su firma y su huella en un contrato lleno de cláusulas y sellos que casi ni leyó: aún celebraba su título de la noche anterior.

Mariposas de oro

Durante un año, Vanessa Mendoza tendría que ser la imagen de todas las sesiones publicitarias que el concurso estipulara, lo mismo que participar en los desfiles, actos benéficos y correrías que se presentaran, acudir a Miss Universo y, ante todo, permanecer soltera. A cambio, recibiría un salario mensual cercano a los dos millones de pesos, alojamiento y comida. Los regalos que le llegaran serían eso, regalos, aunque habría que investigar su procedencia. Por aquel entonces, la Señorita Colombia tenía asegurados un reloj Gucci de oro de 18 kilates, avaluado en 18 millones de pesos, un anillo de diamantes, réplicas en collares y aretes de la cultura Tayrona y una mariposa en oro adornada con piedras preciosas, fuera de un cheque por varios millones. "Yo no quiero ser reina por los regalos y el dinero, quiero ser reina para ayudar a mi gente, siempre olvidada, siempre humillada", había dicho un mes antes de su coronación.

Ya como reina, empezó a cumplir sus palabras desde el primer día. En sólo dos meses había conseguido 318 millones de pesos con la Comisión de Regalías de la Presidencia para el alumbrado público de Unguía, la promesa del ministro de Desarrollo, Eduardo Pizano, de que su pueblo sería incluido dentro del Plan Pacífico -con la consecuente construcción de un acueducto-, y una ludoteca, donación de la Oficina de la Primera Dama de la Nación.

Era una reina feliz, aunque algunos medios de comunicación, sobre todo en la Medellín que la conocía desde hacía dos años, dijeran que había cambiado, que se había creído el cuento. Por aquellos tiempos pedía que la invitaran a la mesa de negociaciones en San Vicente del Caguán, "simplemente para aportar un granito de paz con mi presencia". Incluso, a mediados de diciembre pasado le envió un mensaje a Manuel Marulanda para que decretara una tregua de Navidades. Había sido condecorada con la orden de Caballero del Congreso de la República, con la Civil al Mérito José Acevedo y Gómez del Concejo de Bogotá y con la Medalla al Mérito Cimarrones, del departamento de Chocó; los periodistas de su región la habían elegido la Mujer del Año, y era convidada de honor del Ministerio de Cultura en el encuentro de Negritudes de Popayán que celebraba 150 años de la abolición de la esclavitud.

Una semana después de aquella cita, Vanessa Mendoza apareció en una estampilla de 800 pesos. De alguna manera, ser la cara y el cuerpo de un sello postal era pasar a la inmortalidad, seguir escribiendo una historia que era suya, pero al mismo tiempo de todos los negros en Colombia, felices de que por fin una reina fuera como ellos. No obstante, su imagen y sus victorias comenzaban a distanciarse cada vez más de su vida.

‘Te llamo desde la prisión’

Ella sabía sonreír por fuera y sufrir por dentro frente a las cámaras: realizó las campañas de Medias Ritchi, Armonía, Jolie de Vogue y el Instituto del Seguro Social, pero el día a día la reventaba. Así, fue acumulando rabias y rencores. Una vez tuvo que morderse los labios cuando un asesor le sugirió, en medio de una calurosa discusión en uno de los restaurantes del hotel La Fontana, de Bogotá, que abandonara a su novio, Sergio. Ella lo amaba, tanto como para escribirle cartas y cartas durante los días que antecedieron al reinado. Eran los tiempos en los que se realizaban los programas especiales sobre el reinado de Cartagena; tiempos en los que las distintas candidatas ignoraban a Vanessa Mendoza. Ninguna creía que pudiera ser reina y ella lo sabía: cuando le hablaban, lo hacían con una sonrisa de conmiseración. Eso era lo que más le dolía, pero todo lo atenuaba con escritos y dibujos para su amado.

A Raimundo Angulo no le agradaba aquella relación. Nunca le gustó, como antes no le agradaron muchas otras. En voz baja se le escuchaba comentar que Sergio era de otro nivel, que no tenía buenos modales. Y eso no tiene nada de extraño, según asegura Nini Johanna Soto, reina de belleza de hace 21 años: "El reinado se quedó en el tiempo, parece del medioevo. Hay elitismo y racismo, demasiados cuestionamientos morales, pero ante todo, un desmesurado interés por el dinero. Si Raimundo Angulo permitió que una negra fuera la reina, fue porque vio muchos millones detrás de ella".

Dicen que por estos días el noviazgo anda estable, con las típicas idas y vueltas de todos los noviazgos, pese a que casi ni se ven. Él la llama por teléfono todos los días, aunque también deba sufrir el desgaste de que su llamada pase por un filtro. Ella le cuenta de sus cosas y lo tranquiliza, prometiéndole un tiempo que no tendrá disponible, bien porque anda de mudanza hacia un apartamento que arrendó el Concurso Nacional de Belleza en Bogotá, bien porque tiene que prepararse para Miss Universo, bien por un desfile, una cena, una entrevista o una cita con el ministro. Su agenda va de seis de la mañana a doce de la noche, y a veces se alarga. A fin de cuentas, ella firmó un papel el propio 12 de noviembre –un día después del de la Independencia de Cartagena, y del reinado-, y cada vez que sale por su cuenta tiene que firmar otros para comprometerse a regresar.

Por lo pronto, apuesta con todas sus fichas a Miss Universo. Según Rafael Ramos, estilista de las reinas durante más de 30 años, Vanessa Mendoza es más que favorita. "Si gana esa corona, podrá comenzar a liberarse de Raimundo Angulo", dice. Pero ella no quiere esperar y ya comenzó a soltarse, muy lentamente. La primera semana de marzo, por ejemplo, se opuso a que la preparara en Venezuela el gurú de la belleza, Osmel Souza. "Prefiero a los colombianos y, sobre todo, estar acá", dijo, rompiendo una tradición de años. Esa, por ahora, fue su primera gran rebeldía.

Actually, YEAH... Vanessa's having conflicts... but not directly with the entire Organizacion Señorita Colombia-- only with its head, Raimundo Angulo... (he is Osmel Sousa's Colombian counterpart)...

According to this article, there was an instance when Vanessa request the pageant org to grant her January 4, 2002 as her rest day... she just wanted to be home in her native town of Unguia... but then Mr. Angulo ruled out against this simple request. He didn't allow Vanessa to go home because she had pictorials with Cromos magazine... So lumalabas, sakal na sakal na si Vanessa. All these were revealed by her chaperon Ekaterina Lombana.

Vanessa wants to be remembered as the beauty queen who helped the less fortunate and not as one na puro glamour, beauty and extravagance lang just like what most people perceive beauty queens are into most of the time... But since sakal nga siya, there's not much time to attend to this cause.

The last time Singapore made it in Miss Universe was in 1987, when Marion Nicole Teoh made it to the Top 10 in her hometown-- Singapore!

Singapore has never won any special award in Miss Universe.

Former Miss Teen USA 1996 Christie Lee Woods will be competing again at the Miss Texas USA 2003 pageant in July. The winner of this pageant will represent The Lone Star State in the Miss USA 2003 pageant set for March 2003 in Gary, Indiana.

Christie was 3rd runner-up to Kasi Kelly during this year's Miss Texas USA pageant. Aside from this, she also bagged the Swimsuit, Interview and Photogenic awards.

Christie is now back with a real vengeance. She was crowned Miss Houston 2002 yesterday. This gives her the exclusive right to represent her district in the state pageant.

Christie is 24 years old and stands 5 feet 8 inches.

I believe this year's venue (Roberto Clemente Coliseum) is bigger...sa pic pa lang na pinost ko kita na eh. Yung venue last year (Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum) ay parang ULTRA lang eh...

You're right, yung pinost ko na pic ng isa sa mga hotel rooms ay Suite nga. There are only 22 suites and 36 Club Inter-Continental rooms in the entire hotel. Itong mga rooms na ito ay ang pinaka-top of the line na... So, kukulangin ng rooms for the delegates kung doon sila-- between 81-83 delegates are expected this year eh... Kaya tama ka, sa superior or deluxe rooms lang sila for sure... kasi malulugi talaga ang hotel... mga 3 weeks pa naman sila doon eh...

MISS COSTA RICA & MISS NICARAGUA MEET EACH OTHER

Miss Universe contestants from neighboring countries, Miss Nicaragua and Miss Costa Rica, had a chance to meet prior to their trip to Puerto Rico on May 10th.

Miss Nicaragua, Marianela Lacayo, had a modeling assignment in Costa Rica, and while in the country, met with Merylin Villalta, Miss Costa Rica 2002, who invited the Nicaraguan representative to her house, and introduced her to her parents.

Both ladies are preparing very hard to achieve what so far only once has been achieved by each country, to make the top ten and have a shot to obtain the Miss Universe title. If one of them do, it would be the first time for any Central American nation.

During her brief training with Osmel Sousa, she will be drilled on pasarela (walking), make-up, grooming, wardrobe selection and other basics of Modelling 101 such as reading a newspaper, brushing of teeth, proper decorum during functions and posing for the camera... She is expected to meet up with reigning Miss Venezuela Cynthia Lander just like Miriam Quiambao and Zorah Andam did with their counterparts Carolina Indriago and Eva Ekvall during their respective years...

Chiqui Brosas Singson represented the Philippines in the Miss Universe 1975 pageant held in San Salvador, El Salvador.

Chiqui won 4th runner-up to Finland's Anne Marie Pohtamo on July 19, 1975.

It's a good thing the Miss Universe Organization brought back the 10-5-3 format...

It simply means from 80 delegates, it will be narrowed down to just 10 semi-finalists. This number will be further narrowed down to just 5 finalists then to the Magic 3 delegates...

This format is better than last year's... I just hate hearing 3rd runner-up and 4th runner-up nowadays... It's definitely soooo ANCIENT!

...After Greece, where? The Miss Universe Incorporated scouted around for another suitable site outside the United States, and had about four or five places in mind, Tokyo being somewhat foremost among those considered. Whether the team had the Philippines on their list is not quite so important, as the Philippines having the bright beautiful idea in mind that, if the country could manage to win four worldwide beauty titles in less than a decade (Gemma Cruz and Aurora Pijuan, Miss Internationa; Gloria Diaz and Margie Moran, Miss Universe) surely such a country, speedily gaining a reputation for being a land of beautiful people can afford to offer itself proudly, as the site of the next Miss Universe Pageant. And that's exactly what it did.

1999 was a good year for SPAIN...

Lorena Bernal did not participate in Miss Universe 1999 since she was underage-- only 17 (same case to that of another Lorena two years later). Miss Pontevedra Diana Nogueira Gonzalez, who was among the Miss España '99 Top 5, was invited to represent Spain instead after Lorena's 1st and 2nd runners-up rejected the offer. Diana gladly accepted the offer.

The rest was history... Diana Noguiera surprised the universe was placing 3rd overall to Botswana's Mpule Kenelweine kwelagobe. She also won the Oscar de la Renta Swimsuit and Evening Gown awards.

Lorena Bernal competed in Miss World 1999 6 months later... She made it to the Top 10 in London...

Carmen Ruiz competed in Miss International 1999 in Tokyo. She finished 2nd overall to Colombia's Paulina Margarita Galvez Pineda.

Stephanie Abla Walkins-Fia was crowned Miss Universe Ghana 2002 last month. She will represent Ghana in MU2002 set for May 29 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Stephanie is 22 years old.

The first and last time Ghana made it in Miss Universe was in 1999, when Akuba Cudjoe made it to the Top 10 in Trinidad & Tobago.

The first and last time Ghana won a special award was in 1993, when Jamilah Harunah was voted Miss Congeniality by her fellow delegates in Mexico City, Mexico.

Unknown to many, Miss Ecuador 2002 Isabel Cristina Ontaneda Pinto spent the last 3 weeks in Venezuela training and preparing for MU2002.

Here are her makeover and competition pictures... all courtesy of Venezuelan photographer Sergio Di Francesco. (same guy who took Natascha's pics)... Isabel's wardrobe was taken care of by top Venezuelan couturier Angel Sanchez.

The last time Ecuador made it in Miss Universe was in 1981, when Lucia Vinueza made it to the Top 12 in New York City, New York.

The last time Ecuador won a special award was in 1992, when Maria Soledad Diab won the Photogenic Award in Bangkok, Thailand.

Let's just wait for the girls come May 10, malay mo bigla nalang sumulpot yan. Remember last year there were some countries na wala sa list pero sumulpot. Kaya wag muna tayo maniwala sa mga pinagsasabi nila. Though Belleza is a reliable source, I trust MUI even more.

I definitely don't like Miss Canada this year. It seems her appearance expecially her hair is stuck in a time warp- circa early 90's- so old fashioned, and she looks old. If she doesn't have a make over soon goodbye sa top 10. Even if she has brains, but no looks naman.

Denise was in Las Vegas last week to assist in "Tiger Jam V", a benefit event organized by top golfer Tiger Woods . The event took place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

I AGREE ALL THE WAY! All what's left for her to do is to perfect her catwalk skills and select the perfect evening gown... and that's just about it...

TO ALL: What do you think should Karen wear during the Swimsuit Preliminaries...1-piece or 2-piece?

Miss USA at Miss Teen USA contestants lang ang alam kong strictly 2-piece talaga ang suot sa prelims at finals night... it's in their culture na... kung may mag 1-piece man, iilan lang... and they never make it...

Unlike sa Miss Universe... kung mapapansin niyong mabuti... every year, merong kahit isang girl (at least) who'll opt for a 1-piece... Nung 1998, sina Miss South Africa, Ireland at India.... Nung 1999, si Miriam at Miss Mexico... Nung 2000, si Miss Colombia at South Africa... and last year, si Miss Nigeria... It really depends on the girl (her peformance, physique, and religions/beliefs) carrying the swimsuit...

Unlike sa Miss Universe... kung mapapansin niyong mabuti... every year, merong kahit isang girl (at least) who'll opt for a 1-piece... Nung 1998, sina Miss South Africa, Ireland at India.... Nung 1999, si Miriam at Miss Mexico... Nung 2000, si Miss Colombia at South Africa... and last year, si Miss Nigeria... It really depends on the girl (her peformance, physique, and religions/beliefs) carrying the swimsuit...

I just got some info that Karen Agustin's national costume will be reminiscent to those worn during the Spanish Colonial Era-- similar to those worn by Miriam Quiambao and Zorah Andam during their respective years.

Karen's in Colombia at this very moment meeting up with Colombian couturier Alfredo Barraza regarding her wardrobe for Miss Universe 2002. Her national costume and evening gown designs are BEING FINALIZED at this very moment. Let's wait for the confirmation on this matter.

Meet the Philippines' representative for Miss Universe, Karen Agustin! She is 19 years old and 5'7" tall, from Quezon City.

What was your childhood dream?
As a child, I dreamt of becoming a model-lawyer.

How interesting! Is that a logical career combination?
It may be an unusual combination but I'd say it's not totally incompatible with each other. A good female lawyer can still be
smart and fashionable.

If you had to choose only one, what would you like to be - a model or lawyer?
I'd choose to be a lawyer since it is a lifetime career unlike modeling where career span is quite short. Models usually find themselves at the end of their career even before they reach the age of thirty.

Who is the greatest influence in your life?
That will have to be my parents from whom I learned so much. My parents taught me my principles and moral values. The way they brought me up gave me a high sense of responsibility and maturity. Everything that I am now, I owe to my parents.

What are your hobbies?
I love playing the piano which I have been doing for 13 years. I also enjoy running and reading books.

What book have you read that you enjoyed a lot?
I enjoy reading books of John Grisham. The interesting cases that they write about have interested me so much that it has influenced my decision to pursue a Law course.

We came to know that you can perform magic tricks. Where did you learn magic?
It all started when I was thinking of a number for the Talent Competition of Global Queen Philippines. One of my classmates suggested that a magic trick presentation would be interesting and unique. I was fortunate to have a classmate, Michael Ching, whom was a professional magician who has performed abroad and is a member of an international association of magicians. I performed magic tricks in both contests I joined and won two Miss Talent trophies. I hope to bring my magic to Puerto Rico and win a crown.


What have you achieved so far that you feel proud of?
I am particularly proud of the fact that I graduated with honors from grade school and high school. I am presently taking up Computer Science and I am happy to tell you that I am a college scholar.

Who is your favorite hero?
My favorite heroine is Gabriela Silang because unlike other Filipino women of the revolution who cared for the wounded soldiers, she herself led an uprising against the colonizers of the Philippines.

If there is one historical event that you wish never happened, what is it?
I wish World War II never happened because so many valuable and innocent lives were lost. Only God knows what these people would have become and what they would have contributed to Life and the world. If they had lived to the present, then there would have been a lot more people to celebrate Life with.

What physical feature or personal quality do you have that you think will be of big help to you in the Miss Universe contest?
My genuine interest in people, friendliness and ability to get along well with people will definitely be a big help in gaining friends from among the different beauty delegates. My strong interest to learn, especially about different cultures will surely make my Miss Universe stint a memorable experience.

If you had a chance to go on a holiday after the Miss Universe which country would you like to visit and why?
I have always been fascinated by Egypt - its rich, colorful history, great civilization and its ancient pyramids. I liked what I've read and seen on TV that I can't wait to visit Egypt.

What do you think of beauty delegates who undergo surgical enhancement? Will you go through one?
It is a personal choice for them and if that will make them a better and happier person, then I respect their decision. Personally though, I wouldn't go through one. When I join a contest I feel confident about my competence and I'm proud to represent who I am and what I really am.

Don't you think that surgically enhanced delegates offer unfair competition?
I don't think so. In the end it's still your individual performance that will matter.

In the short training period that you had while in the Philippines, what do you consider as the most significant?
My sessions with Zorayda Andam and her pep talks helped remove much of the pressure. Her words of encouragement gave me a sense of calm and confidence to face the challenge of the Miss Universe crown.

What do you feel about your training in Venezuela?
Of course, I am very excited about it. Aside from the help that the training will give me, I also feel excited about visiting Venezuela since I heard it is a beautiful country. I hope I can have even just a little time to see some beautiful sights in Venezuela.

What is the value of the Miss Universe title to you?
The Miss Universe title will put me in a position of great influence as a spokesperson for various causes and issues that the Miss Universe organization and I will personally espouse.

How do you rate your chances in Miss Universe?
I think I have a good chance of winning the title. Just like personal goals I've set for myself, I work hard towards achieving my goal and I never stop until I get it. I feel confident that I can stand out from the rest. I will surely give it my best shot!

BEWARE OF MISS COLOMBIA'S GOWN!

For the first time in 8 long years, top Colombian couturier Jaime Arango has designed gowns and dresses for his own country's bet for Miss Universe. He recently released the national costume, evening gown and other dresses that Miss Colombia Vanessa Mendoza will wear during the Miss Universe 2002 pageant.

Unknown to many, Jaime did 2 of the highest-scoring evening gowns in Miss Universe history. He did those worn by Paola Betancourt and Carolina Gomez during Miss Universe 1993 and 1994 respectively. Both ladies won 1st runner-up. Both also won the Evening Gown award.

Paola Betancourt holds the record for having the HIGHEST EVER scoring black evening gown in Miss Universe history... She got a 9.815.
