I just don't like how our girls would pose in their swimsuit. Placing their hands on their backs????? You don't see that in any other pageant especially sa MIss U and sa Miss Venezuela. It's sooo fifty years ago... and the way they wave, good GOD!!!! Would you see Lara or Denise wave like that? Whoever taught our girls to wave like that must be stuck in some time warp. I watched the Miss Thailand Universe on cable and when Miss Thailand 2001, even though she wasn't that beautiful, pero maganda ang wave niya... hehehe

As we all know, Argentina is currently experiencing the worst crisis it has had in years... It may not send a delegate to MU2002... After the dirty scandal that left the Organizacion Miss España on the rocks two weeks ago, the issue regarding the Spanish representative for MU2002 continues to boil up to this very moment.

A lot have posted in various message boards that Lorena Ayala Van Heerde is no longer representing her country in MU2002. What's the real score? Unless some credible sources like Belleza Venezolana, Global Beauties or Hola! News confirm it, Lorena is STILL the Spanish representative for San Juan in May.

CONFIRMED

Miss España 2002 1st runner-up LOLA ALCOCER VASQUEZ of Sevilla will represent Spain in MU2002.

It can be recalled that Lola was originally the top favorite to win in the local pageant.

She's 21 years old and stands 5 feet 10 inches.

Too bad Lorena had to wait and prepare for a year... only to find out she won't be going anywhere at all... What a waste... Oh well, there's really no use crying over spilled milk... Let's just hope for the best. Besides, Spain is STILL a strong contender with Lola as its representative. :)

Hay naku! nag hahanap pa ako ng lakas mag post kasi nga parang nakakapanibago. well anyway, this year's batch of BB is a good one. i just hope they'll make us proud representing our country in the international arena.

Jensie: tama ang prediction natin. Nanalo si Karen. yung sa tumitira kay karen, well what can you say about that? not very much impressed with Alto.:D

Will there be another geraldine asis? i hope she can surpass what geraldine had acomplished last 1987. well lets just keep our fingers crossed and keep our faith. i know or we know that karen will do well in the Miss Universe Pageant.

BTW, some people said that Karen will be flying to Caracas first week of April to undergo a two - week training under Osmel. Is this true? well, i just hope everything will turn out really well. Good luck to our three ladies with a K Karen, Katherine and Kristine. :)

Sayang talaga... but I won't shed a tear because a lot of people originally picked Sevilla to go to San Juan, well they got their wish... hehehe diba Jensie? Gema Garcia (C), an undercover reporter, takes part in the Miss Spain beauty pageant in Algeciras, March 13, 2002. The Spanish television reporter, who could barely walk in high heels, earlier tottered off with the Alicante regional beauty crown despite not being a resident and after paying 27,000 euros. She was in the running for last week's Miss Spain contest but withdrew ahead of time when pageant organizers became suspicious of her and discovered she was older than the age limit of 24. The winner of the Miss Spain 2002 contest, Vania Millan Miras, of Almeria is at left.

Jensie: tama ang prediction natin. Nanalo si Karen. yung sa tumitira kay karen, well what can you say about that? not very much impressed with Alto.:D

Yupyup! I'm soooo happy that our bet Karen won. Saka by the way, remember your post on the alleged luto that should have ruled in favor of Kate Manalo? You posted it last March 15. At least Kate didn't win Bb. Pilipinas Universe! She would definitely NOT lose the excess baggage in two months time! Pang-Miss World talaga siya... She has 8 long months to shape up.

Regarding Bing Alto naman... hindi siya striking or stunning in person at all! Trust me! I was at the Araneta Coliseum's South Gate right after the Bb. Pilipinas pageant. I saw her up close! Hindi siya stunning at all! Walang K. At least I've learned that pictures on the internet can be very, very deceiving at times! Hah!

Will there be another geraldine asis? i hope she can surpass what geraldine had acomplished last 1987. well lets just keep our fingers crossed and keep our faith. i know or we know that karen will do well in the Miss Universe Pageant.

Yup this is true! Confirmed na daw! My source said before na she's scheduled to leave on the week of April 26. She'll proceed to La Quinta Miss Venezuela in Caracas to train. She's expected in San Juan on the week of May 10. On the course of her training, she will get to meet Cynthia Lander.

OFF TOPIC: Saka ang GANDA-GANDA talaga ni Charlene! My seat was very, very near to the anchor booth (where Charlene stayed most of the time). Ang payat niya! Para bang hindi siya nanganak at all! She never lost her touch and beauty! :)

News on Ms Hong Kong regarding joining of MU

I just want to share that I have read the news about this and it was said that the people handling HK bet to MU has not sent a candidate for last year and this year because they have a problem with the stipulations set by MU org. I think it has something to do with the rights with the delegate (as far as my translation is concerned). Since the HK organizers don't feel justified with the terms of MU Org..they would rather pull out a delegate for MU. Im not clear though if they have severed their franchise ties with MU org. On the other hand, there are some chismis going on that the rival (actually the rival tv station is atv station) of the said organizers (tvb station) is going to send its delegate (coming from its own held beauty pageant) to bid for the shenzhen slot for mu-china...to take advantage daw ng pagback out ng tvb station.

To clear things up, TVB handles the Miss HK contest which sends delegates to MU while ATV handles the Miss Asia contest which sends delegates to Miss Asia Pacific (yata).

Un lang po...hope that clear things up :)

 HELLO EVERYONE!

Jensie, you know Spanish, perhaps you can interpret this...

:confused3:

Hi cathybee! :)

First of all, thanks for posting the clarification regarding Miss HK. We appreciate it. :)

To answer your queries...

1. Lorena Ayala Van Heerde was originally Spain's representative for MU2002 in May. Two weeks ago, during the Miss España 2002 pageant (which selected the Spanish rep for MU2003), a constestant by the name of Gemma Marcos (Miss Alicante), was expelled from the pageant after it was initially discovered she was already 31 years old. Too make matters worse, it was eventually discovered that she was an undercover journalist covering the pageant.

So anong connection nito kay Lorena? It's simple. Lorena was Miss Alicante 2001. So sira na rin pangalan niya in the process sa ginawang scandalo nitong si Miss Alicante 2002. It was also discovered Gemma Marcos bribed the Miss Alicante 2002 judges so she could participate in Miss España 2002. Ang gulo noh!

For still unknown and concrete reasons, Lorena declined to participate in MU2002... an event which many pageant fans lamented...

2. Miss Malaysia Tung Mei Chin (Zorah's roommate during MU2001) was dethroned 3 days before she could even crown her successor. The reason? She complained that she never received her prizes in full... She further lamented the poor handling of the pageant organization of her... these are two things that organizers would just not tolerate... not this time around... Tung was very vocal about her complains dati pa daw eh...

So yun... she was dethroned...

I hope these info helped... :)

This article by Elvira Lora says that Ruth Ocumarez will be having the time of her life from May 10-29 during the Miss Universe pageant in Puerto Rico. The author also describe the feelings of happiness and excitement that Ruth has in connection with her winning of Miss Dominican Republic 2002 last May 2001.

The article also discussed Ruth's concerns on the education and peace situation in her country. These two topics will be her platform in the MU pageant. She will be an instrument to promote these. It also mentioned that her parents, Ruth and Angel, are ready to support her 100% in the upcoming MU pageant.

At the conclusion of the article, the author discussed the preparations Ruth undertook to prepare for MU. She took up speech classes, make-up sessions, gym instruction and walking lessons. Ruth said she was leaving everything up to God to decide on her fate and destiny on May 29...

I was really happy that Karen won this year's BB Pipinas- Universe! Grabe ang ganda-ganda talaga niya and she carries herself very well. A few polishing on her self-confidence and image will certainly make her a top contender for the Miss U crown in May! Anyway here are my observations:

> As usual the interview portion was a disaster. Nakakahiya! Lalo na yung first question asked by the Chairman of the Board of Judges, a Venezuelan beauty..What Filipino tradition are you most proud of...something like that?...Answer naman siya..."Fiestas! Pagkatapos non puro ka-ekekan na ang pinagsasabi as in!

>Lakambini Alto wasn't stunning at all! Parang Lorna Legaspi look-alike? Worse when asked by the wife of Heherson Alvarez...If you become a beauty queen and you were offered a movie role wherein you'll be required to be strip-naked...would you pose naked..... "No I wouldn't pose naked...because it will be a DISGRACE to the title! " Nyaaks she can't even give a good answer to justify her answer!

>The question this year was very GENERIC. Hello??? Sobrang gasgas na ang "In this year and age what do you think is the role of beauty pageants to women? (something like that).." As in hello!

>Kate Manalo was brought in with her a BATALLION of supporters! I was seated in Upper A and it was amusing to see that the pageant turned like a UAAP Basketball game! May mga placards..there were shouting and howling everywhere! Pero nakakatawa...and they helped! BUT, it breaks my heart to see all of them FROWN upon learning that Kate Manalo will not represent the PHilippines in Puerto Rico. HELLO! Ang taba kaya niya! And during the evening gown competition....di siya mapakali dahil di niya alam kung paano dalhin yung BALABAL.
But she's beautiful, and if she loses weight, mas gaganda siyia!

> Ang ganda ni Charlene at Miriam! Charlene is such a good SPORT. , "Charlene I'll send you a LOVE ICON!", Charlene pahingi ng Corned Beef! All throughout the pageant she would just laught with them... ang bait-bait niya!

> Si Miriam parang contestant pa rin! Ang dami niyang blurbs and she stutters! Welcome back to the BinibINANG Pilipinas!

GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE WINNERS ESPECIALLY TO KAREN!

So whoever wins Miss Peru on April 6 would have one year to prepare for Miss UNiverse. It seems again a lot of countries have been choosing as early as now for the 2003 competition. It's slowly becoming a trend already.

Marina was originally scheduled to represent her country in Miss World 2002. However due to a certain and unexplained "twist of fate", she is now headed to San Juan for the Miss Universe pageant on May 29. :)

Let's all see how Marina does. :)

Hi there archerguy! :)

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and experiences during Bb. Pilipinas 2002! We appreciate it.

I share the exact sentiment with you! Sherlyn Ram really messed up her interview! Big time, man! And what was that ek ek about the fiesta thingy? Ambassador Ramirez was obviously expecting more, more, more! Do you remember the part when Ogie Alcasid was serenading the Top 12? Ang ganda ni Sherlyn dun! Very elegant in that gold beaded gown! Kamukha niya sina Charlene at Gul Panag.

Regarding Lakambini naman, I agree again. Hindi talaga siya maganda in any way! No exaggerations whatsoever. Her face was sooo oily and rough-- parang sea urchin or something. She had a poor choice of evening gown. Dark green! I love my alma mater's color noh! GREEN! hehe! Pero dark green for an evening gown? Very tacky! At least I was able to prove that pics can sometimes be very, very disappointing!

Kate Manalo really had sooooo many supporters. A la Venezuela pag Miss Universe. Complete with the plackards, banners, and fliers! Tapos sa area naman where we sat (sa Patron A), andun yung battalion ng Singles For Christ. Taga-Parañaque din si Anna just like Kate eh.

Saka naalala mo pa pala yung moment before the winners were announced. I agree, Miriam is still in top form to compete abroad! :)

Malaysia is sending a unique-looking rep this year to MU. Karen's looks very, very different from Tung, Lynette, Jeanette, etc... She's 25 years old and works as a flight stewardess for Malaysia Airlines. Didn't you notice most Asian reps to MU are flight stewardesses--especially those from Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong?

Let's see how Karen does come May. :)

Here's the score on Marina Mora's election as Miss Peru Universo 2002:

Marina, who was originally set to represent Peru in Miss World 2002, was personally selected by Jessica Newton, Miss Peru Universo/Mundo National Director and MU87 semi-finalist, to go to San Juan for Miss Universe 2002 instead.

The winner of the April 6 national pageant will represent Peru in MU2003. This was done in order to give her more time to prepare. Marina was chosen because she was already prepared.

Wowo! Pex is back!!!!

First things first, congrats to Karen Agustin! She did deliver!!!! Only shows that hindi proque tagaAMA ay di magaling. She impressed me from her walk to her confidently-delivered answers! Miss Ram did dig a deep hole from a supposedly very good answer. Bing Alto looked sooooooo oily I had to wipe my TV screen thinking accumulated dust had make her look oily. But no!!!! Ms. Manalo delivered a more confident answer on the final round, less rattled and more sensible than the first round. Although naturn off ako sa superplastered smile niya while she was crwoned. Miss Magno was too breif and safe in answering.

RE Miss Spain. So no Miss Spain deleagte this year? That's a bummer! They've been doing so good. Means more chances for Karen then...hehehe....

RE Karen Ang. She has that "serene calm" look reminiscent in Thai candidates. That works for me definitely!

Ruth Ocumarez is so damn hot!!!!!!!!!!!

Last thought: Bat mabenta ang pangalang Karen sa Miss U ngayon? Just a thought... :D

here are some interesting stories regarding Karen Agustin.

Yup! her highschool days were spent at St. Theresa's College. So being a Theresian, may laman na talaga utak niya. I haven't encountered a Theresian whose a non-sense individual. One of my best friend was a schoolmate of Karen and Karen would call my Bestfriend 'Ate' when she steps on their classroom kasi ka'on' niya yung isa sa mga classmates nung bestfriend ko. yup! this was confirmed to me by my bestfriend. It's 'normal'daw naman sa isang exclusive school for girls.

College came and Karen went to Ateneo but stayed for only for a sem because of some conflicts regarding with her schedules and with her boyfriend. so she went to AMA to continue her studies. so guys, that's all i can share regarding Karen. Funny but true. But anyhow, my faith with her in representing our country wont fade away. Go Karen

I really admire Charlene. Such a sport. Both Charlene and Miriam are epitomes of a true Filipina beauty. Both inside and outside.
I just hope isali si Charlene sa Mrs. World. :D

YUP, Kate really had a lot of supporters. I was there katabi nung placards saying, "KATE MANALO, #17" Hinakot ba nya kasi yung awards so lalo silang naging ecstatic, haha. Si Charlene nga sinabi na Kate Manalo is a crowd favorite. Pinaka-confident talagang sumagot si Karen Aguilar. Kate Manalo should improve her diction. I swear, they tried answering the questions and from what I heard they can rival the Indian contestants with their substance and choice of words!

Ang tagal ng final deliberations noh? I think it took about 30-40 minutes. Buti na lang Dereck and Miriam tried to cheer up the crowd and tried to compare the number of the supporters,,syempre wala nang tatalo pa sa DAMI ng Kate Manalo supporters, hehe. Next yung Singles for Christ. Maganda yung song numbers nina Ogie and Billy. Crawford..lalo na yung kay Billy. Nakaalis ng boredom Ang ganda ng songs niya no wonder his albums are turning gold to platinum in Europe!

So when is Karen leaving for her Venezuala training? I have high hopes for her though I know this year's competition is TOUGH, basing it from the pics of this year's delegates. But nothing's impossible with God. Parang yung nanalo kay Miriam before. A lot were saying na ang pangit niya but she proved them all wrong! I hope the same luck will be passed on to Karen.

MABUHAY ANG PILIPINA! :)

First of all thanks Zack and scheme for sharing some info about Karen! We appreciate it. :) She will surely go places given her intelligence, wit and figure!

archerguy, Karen is set to leave on the week of April 26 en route to Caracas for a 2-week training with Osmel Sousa. From Caracas, she'll proceed directly to San Juan, Puerto Rico. She's expected there on the week of May 10.

chez-o, Spain still has a representative to MU2002. Her name is Lola Alcocer. Check out page 57 of this thread to see her pics and profile.

My mom is from STC also, and yeah... ang galing talaga ng mga girls na galing sa STC!!! She's complaining nga na a lot of schools do not give the same level of education that they got from the STC nuns. They're not that hyped and popular compared to the other girl schools, but they really have substance compared to the others who you could hear only the word "duuuh" coming out of their mouth. hehehe

Past Bb. Pilipinas hosts (at least of recent memory) include David Bunevacz (2001), Apa Ongpin ('93-'94), Paolo Bediones ('98-'99) and Edu Manzano ('95-'97 (?)). Am I forgetting someone?

http://www.globalbeauties.com/gb/images/Dianaback.JPG DIANA NOGUEIRA GONZALES

She did not win Miss España '99. She was not the first runner-up, neither the second. She was only a finalist. Nevertheless, she was fated to represent her country in Trinidad & Tobago, and now she is part of pageant history-- Miss Universe's greatest surprise ever.

On May 26,1999 she surprised the whole universe when she finished 3rd place overall. To add to this feat, she won the swimsuit and evening gown competitions. Diana will always be remembered as the "silent screamer" who took everyone by storm with her simplicity and elegance.

WOW! It seems Sweden is trying so hard to achieve that hot Naomi Campbell look! hehe

I share the exact sentiments... Last year's winnner, Malin Olsson, was unconventional too... Hopefully next year, a platinum blonde will win the Froken Sverige crown again... The last conventional Swede to win was Valerie Aflalo, Froken Sverige 2000. Am I right?

Lara, I just got this now from the Pageant Almanac MB...

NEW MIKIMOTO CROWN WILL BECOME JEWEL OF THE UNIVERSE

Mikimoto to Debut One-of-a-Kind Crown and Tiara
For Miss Universe 2002

New York, NY – March 2002 - It was announced today that Miss Universe 2002 will be awarded a newly designed crown created specifically for the Miss Universe Organization and their titleholders. The exclusive crown will showcase pearls cultivated by the world-renowned Mikimoto, official jewelry sponsor of the Miss Universe Organization. Miss Universe 2002 will be the first to wear the exquisite crown.

The crown is valued at approximately US$200,000 and will have 500 diamonds totaling nearly 30 carats. 120 pearls, both white South Sea and Akoya pearls, ranging in size from 3.0 –18 mm will adorn the new crown.

Denise Quinones, Miss Universe 2001, recently traveled to Japan where she joined designer Tomohiro Yajima for the first glimpse of the new design. The intricate design depicts the ancient symbol of the phoenix rising, which signifies status, power and the vision of great beauty. In addition, Denise traveled to Pearl Island in Toba, Japan, where they hand selected each pearl. Mikimoto Pearl Island is where pearls were cultured successfully for the first time in history in 1893 using a method developed by Kokichi Mikimoto.

In addition to the official Mikimoto crown, which will be kept by the Miss Universe Organization for the annual crowing of the new Miss Universe, each newly crowned Miss Universe will be awarded a pearl and diamond tiara valued at US$20,000. This tiara will be part of the overall prize package awarded at the conclusion of the Miss Universe 2002 competition in San Juan, Puerto Rico, May 29, 2002 on the CBS Television Network.

Unknown to many, Ayanette won Miss Teen International 2000. She was only 17 years old then.

With her height, pageant experience and looks, I'm sure Ayanette will surely create a big impact on Miss Universe come May 29. Let's all see if she will break Curacao's 5-year drought in Miss Universe. :)

Vietnam's government officially recognizes Miss Vietnam title for the first time.

The winner of this year's Miss Vietnam pageant-- long considered a sign of capitalist decadence-- will get the Communist government's official recognition for the first time, an organizer said Tuesday.

The contest has been held every other year since 1988 without official recognition, but reforms over the last 15 years have opened Vietnam to increased Western influence.

Vietnam's minister of Culture and Information plans to issue a certificate recognizing the new Miss Vietnam after the contest in September, said Duong Xuan Nam, editor of the Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper and organizer of the event.

The first contest in 1988 drew only several hundred participants, which swelled to nearly 5,000 in the most recent contest two years ago, Nam said.

Vietnamese women who are single, childless and aged 16-27 are eligible.

The newspaper also is holding a competition for the best question submitted by readers for judges to ask contestants. Critics have charged in the past that many contestants were empty-headed fashion models.

Contests at the provincial level are to be held in July and regional competitions in August. Between 30 and 35 finalists are to compete for the title in Ho Chi Minh City in mid-September, Nam said.

Miss Vietnam will receive 40 million dong (dlrs 2,650) in prize money and other gifts.

It cannot really be confirmed if Vietnam will be sending a representative to Miss Universe 2002 set for May 29 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. :)

An article about Violet Chang Miss Jamaica 2003 and 1st runner to Miss Jamaica 2002

Violet in Red
http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/magazines/AllWoman/images/20020331T230000-0500_23438_OBS_VIOLET_IN_RED_1.jpg

Miss Jamaica Universe 2002 will be remembered for many things -- the close race, the stunning top-three girls, the dramatic entrance of world boxing champion, Lennox Lewis, and finally the red dress worn by first runner-up Violet Chang.

Gasps of oohs and aahs travelled throughout the packed ballroom with many a woman envisaging themselves in something similar.

The dress designed by Guyanese designer, Roger Gary, was of toned red Chantilly lace, with gold threads running through the abstract floral pattern. The illusion of nudity made the dress that much more appealing. "Nudity with class," according to Gary with whom we spoke Tuesday evening. He went on to describe how he added over 1,000 crystals (all done by hand).

"I also took into consideration the occasion ... I wanted her to create an immediate impression. The dress would be viewed (for the most part) from a distance."

The bell-shaped sleeves, scalloped edges at the neckline, and cuffs added additional drama.

This one-of-a-kind gown, took three full days. And the cost? Let's just say. Not at all prohibitive.

And what does one do with a dress like this seen by so many eyes?

"Wear it again!" chuckled Violet. "Just not in Jamaica."

And what did her beau think of the ensemble? (there were gold shoes and earrings). He told me "that I looked stunning".

No argument here. The round definitely belonged to the champ.

Lara, Eva Siso really had a great figure-- even 100 times better than that of Helen Lindes.... Sayang talaga she was left in the Top 10...she should have been in the Top 5...

Oh well, let's just see how Spain will do this year... :)

Very sorry for not replying to my fave thread for days. Gotten used to no PEX and no office.

Very happy to see new countires (thus new beauties) Vietnam, PRC, etc etc. So, I guess Miss HK is joining PRC eh? Hope so. Hoping for a lot of delegates this year.

Also hoping for Miss Spain replacement to be as good as Diana, Helen, and Eva. Sana di maputol ang streak nila.

Where are babyboi and the rest? Miss ko na ang entertaining and informative posts (aside from Lara's and JENSIE's of course...)

If sumali nga ang Vietnam and Mongolia this year, I believe this year's Miss Universe pageant will hold the record for having the MOST number of delegates ever.

So far, MU84 and MU99 hold the record for having the most number of MU delegates-- 84... to think our country did extremely well during these 2 years. Desiree was 3rd runner-up in MU84 while Miriam was 1st runner-up in MU99. Both of them even ranked 2nd overall in their respective preliminaries! I just wanted to share... :)

For this year, 91 countries are expected to participate. So far, 72 delegates have been chosen and are already confirmed to head for San Juan. All delegates are expected to be there on the week of May 10.

Also hoping for Miss Spain replacement to be as good as Diana, Helen, and Eva. Sana di maputol ang streak nila.

Oo nga eh. I'm still hoping Lorena would be sent to MU2002.... Sayang kasi yung 1 year na pinaghandaan niya eh... But then if not, Lola is also a good choice! Very, very stunning indeed! Julio Rodriguez has not replaced Lorena with Lola in the Belleza Venezolana MU2002 delegate gallery... I know for a fact that Julio is a very, very credible and reliable source... talo pa niya Global Beauties or any other message board. He has DIRECT contacts with the Miss Universe Organization and lots of national pageant directors that's why he can never go wrong... Let's all hope for the best! I strongly believe Spain is still strong... whether she be Lorena or Lola... Spain will still put on a good show come May 29. :)

I dunno about Zack, Altwegg, cathybee, mulan_rushdiary, expelliarmus18, NakeD, Pattie, crybabymaki, SUX2BU, archerguy and the rest of the regulars... Baka busy lang sila with work, finals exams, vacations or whatever... Sana mag-PEx na din sila... :)

FINALLY IT'S CONFIRMED

Due to its worst crisis in years (just like what I've been posting in this thread ever since), ARGENTINA has cancelled its national pageant this year... therefore, it is official and confirmed that it is not participating in this year's Miss Universe pageant set for May 29 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Cuba is also not participating in MU2002.

KAREN'S NEW LOOK... :)

http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant111/pageant111_image1.jpg

This girl will certainly make waves in San Juan come May. GOOD LUCK KAREN! :)

This picture has been taken from Keiji's Pageant Hub.

Anyway, I received info that Karen's schedule has been revised.... It seems she will not be flying to Venezuela to train as originally planned since December last year. Karen has been placed on a super tight schedule. Since she snagged the Bb. Pilipinas Universe crown last March 16, there's nothing she has done but TRAIN, TRAIN and TRAIN. This is the main reason why she literally has no TV guestings or whatsoever.

Aside from the training that Osmel alumni Am and Zorah will provide her, Karen will also receive tips from Abbygale Arenas and Gloria Diaz. Nina Ricci Alagao will train her in make-up.

However, Karen's evening gown and national costume would still be taken care of by top Colombian couturier Alfredo Barraza.

VIETNAM SHOULD GIVE MISS UNIVERSE A TRY!

Here are two of the cutting edge designs that the Miss Vietnam contestants are set to wear for the 2002 national pageant.

Vietnam would really, really give other Southeast Asian nations such as Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore a real run for their money in Miss Universe.

Vietnamese beauty is truly exotic and oriental! Parang rich blend of the Thai and Chinese races.

I just wanted to share that my uncle's wife is a Vietnamese! And whoaw!!! Sindak lagi kami tuwing reunions and other family gatherings. Iba talaga ang beauty ng mga Vietnamese! Very, very exotic... My uncle's kinda dark... tapos Vietnamese yung wife niya (chinita)... as a result of their union, magaganda ang mga anak nila!!! Exotic din! hehe

It should really, really participate in MU!!! :)

Martina Thorogood Heemsen
http://colophon.corbis.com/CorbisImage/comp/12390502/UT0007032.jpg

I believe she should have been sent to Miss Universe 2000. Her first runner-up Norkis Batista should have been sent to Miss World 1999.

But even if Martina was sent to Cyprus, I believe Lara Dutta would still win... 1st runner-up pa rin si Martina... hehe! So ganun din... walang pinagkaiba... :)

BREAKING NEWS

Lomaswati Dlamini, whose name signifies "bella Swati" is the new Miss Botswana 2002. Dlamini, a freshman student at the University of Botswana, is 19 years old. She beat 19 other beauties at the Ditshupo Hall in Gaborone last December 8, 2002 to bag the coveted title.

The finalists are Lorato Kwelagobe, 21 years old (the favorite of the public); and Rita Machibe, 18 years old.

Outgoing Miss Botswana Masego Sebedi crowned Dlamini, who will represent Botswana in Miss World 2002 set for November in South Africa.

Let's all wait for the crowning of Botswana's rep for MU2002. I smell something fishy here... Why is the national pageant's winner suddenly headed to Miss World and not Miss Universe? I hope the 1st runner-up, Lorato Kwelagobe, goes to MU2002... Familiar surname, huh? :)

BREAKING NEWS

Pageants May Move From CBS

Donald Trump is shopping the Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants to various television networks against the possibility that CBS is going to end its long-running relationship with the franchise.

The network has been the broadcast home of the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants since 1972 and of Miss Teen USA since 1983. Its most recent, five-year contract to air the trophy shows ends this year. Sources at other networks say Trump has approached them about buying the broadcast rights to the pageants; one executive says the networks have been told that CBS is going to pass on the franchise.

Trump, who bought the pageants' parent company, the Miss Universe Organization, from Madison Square Garden in November of 1996, acknowledged yesterday that he was talking to other networks, but denied that CBS had declined to strike a new deal to continue broadcasting the pageants.

"We had a five-year deal that expires in August," Trump said yesterday. "At the end of five years I can go re-price it with other networks. I wanted the right, after a five-year period, to shop it for market value. I think it's very strong."

He can't be referring to the ratings, which have been slowly sliding for many years. Miss Universe, which back in '74 attracted more than 35 million viewers, last May suffered a worst-ever viewer average of 8.3 million. Miss USA drew nearly 30 million viewers in '74, but a worst-ever 7.6 million this past March. Miss Teen USA, which had 20 million viewers in 1984, averaged just under 8 million last August, though that was better than 2000's average of about 7 million.

Those ratings slides occurred despite efforts to update the aging franchise, including the addition of music acts, quirky hosts such as William Shatner, and interview and Internet elements to the broadcasts. CBS declined to comment on its plans for the pageants, saying through a spokeswoman that it is "planning to broadcast 'Miss Universe' in May and 'Miss Teen USA' in August, and further plans for the pageant won't be announced until later."

© 2002 The Washington Post Company

Lara: I told you so... the Miss Universe 1974 pageant TV ratings will go down in history as the highest ever. I hope we can grab a copy of that historical event. :)

This girl reportedly "promised" to enter the Top 10 of MU2002... Sorry, better luck next time for Ecuador... She doesn't have the "it" to be a semi-finalist... However, ANYTHING could happen... hehe! :)

Ecuador last made it to the MU semi-finals in 1981, with Lucia Vinueza as its representative. The last time it won a special award was in 1992, when Maria Soleded Diab won the Photogenic Award.

While a lot of people are disgusted over her looks and victory in the Miss USA pageant, I personally do not see anything wrong with her. For a fact, Shauntay's striking and unique looks would definitely earn her a spot in the Top 10 or even the Top 5. She's the 5th woman of color to win the Miss USA crown.

This girl is a communications student and works for a TV network in her native District of Columbia. She knows how to talk, talk and talk... Aside from her great figure and elegant white gown, it was really her interview skills and personality that won for her the coveted title of Miss USA 2002... Hi baby_boi! :)

I have to agree with this! Her figure is just something to DIE for! The last one was Carolina Indriago way back in MU99 pa. Claudia and Eva were both only 5'10". I know for a fact that Cynthia will do extremely well in the swimsuit preliminaries. :)

I'm also dying to know what her national costume and evening gowns will be... Di ba may trend ang Venezuela-- different gowns are worn during the Presentation Show and the Live Telecast. I wonder kung anong gimmick na naman ang gagawin ni Osmel for this year... We should watch out for this! :)

Hi to EVERYONE! :)

I just saw Miriam trip onstage in Sapul Kayo Dyan!. I must say poised pa rin yung pagkalaglag niya sa stage kasi pa-sideways eh. At least hindi nauna mukha niya or something. Impressed ako sa quick recovery niya! hehe :)

Here's a snapshot of that famous "recovery"...
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/pageant118/pageant118_image1.jpg

This accident of Miriam helped her "shine" during the Final 5 Q&A of the Miss Universe 1999 pageant.

Jack Wagner's question: "When you were in college, you stood up against your professor. What have you stood up for lately?"

Miriam's winning answer: Oh... when I fell on the stage last Friday... (laughs with the audience)... I believe that I have stood up for the rest of the women who have fallen whether on or off stage. I believe that through this example of mine I have shown courage & strength of being a woman, of being who I am, and I hope to be a good example to the rest of the women in the world. Thank you."

This answer landed her on the Magic 3 together with Diana Noguiera of Spain and Mpule Kwelagobe of Botswana. The rest was history... :)

1998 was BLOOPER YEAR for GHANA...

You might not have noticed or remembered that...

1. Miss Ghana Francisca Awuah tripped over Miss Venezuela Veruska Ramirez's evening gown... this scene happened just seconds after Miss Trinidad & Tobago Wendy Fitzwilliam was proclaimed Miss Universe 1998 in front of an estimated worldwide audience of 600 million.

Francisca Baafour Awuah...
http://beau_land1.hihome.com/M-UNIVER/MU52-now/98/entry/Ghana.jpg

Francisca, obviously a close friend and staunch supporter of Wendy, rushed to greet and congratulate her... all at the expense of the trail of Veruska's gown...

2. Miss Ghana Efia Marfo literally landed on her knees during the Miss World 1998 Evening Gown competition. Unlike Miriam, Efia never recovered from her fall in any way at all. This proved to be a real disaster because it even took like a minute or two before she could stand up and continue with the competition...

How could I forget the shot's angle? I asked a lot of people regarding angles and the response was unanimous... mas gumaganda daw talaga ang shot sa tao kapag kinunan ng side view or pa-tilt ang konti... it adds a mystery to the person's aura daw eh... Lorena Van Heerde may represent Spain in Miss Universe after all

5 ABRIL 2002

If indeed Lorena will still be the representative of Spain to this year's MU, then there's a lot more reason for us to get excited. Mas stiff ang competition this year!

Hi baby_boi! :)

To make long matters SHORT, this article only says that Lorena Van Heerde's parents have decided to exercise their legal options with the Organizacion Miss España by fighting for the benefits that their daughter had obtained during her year's reign as Miss España 2001. The Van Heerdes have manifested their non-conformity and have stressed that they can't accept their daughter not participating in Miss Universe.

With this move by her parents, Lorena's dream of representing her country in the universal beauty contest might just be a reality.

Yup, I agree! Lorena will definitely make it to the Top 10 or even the Top 5. :)

MEET JENNIFER... :)

http://www.radio.argovia.ch/bilder/Coole%20Bilder/MissJenniferAnnGerber-hoch.jpg

Jennifer Ann Gerber was crowned Miss Schweiz 2002 late last year. She will represent Switzerland in the MU2002 pageant set for May 29 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

She's only 18 years old and stands 5 feet 9 inches.

The very last time Switzerland made it to the MU semi-finals was way back 8 years ago here in Manila. Then-Miss Switzerland Patricia Ann Faessler made it to the Top 10. Unfortunately, she settled for 8th place overall.

Let's all see how Jennifer will do come May. Stay tuned. :)

Karen has that positive aura Miriam had when she won at Binibini. I can see a very humble and serene woman with lots of beauty and brains. I hope the judges see just that.

Well, just came back from out of town, after seeing Cynthia's pic, all I can say is she looks like Claudia Moreno!!!! And yeah she's beautiful with her new look but i'm not impressed because as always, ANG KAPAL talaga ng make up kapag sa formal shots ni Daniel Alonso. Like last year I wasn't impressed with Eva's Daneil Alonso's pics, but gumanda siya sa Miss U shots. I'll just wait for the formal Miss Universe headshots, I bet she would look even more beautiful and more natural looking.

IMHO- beauty pageants are just plain frivolous, and a waste of good money

It's no wonder that the Ms. Universe ratings have consistently dropped for the last 5 years.

No one cares anymore.

But that's my opinion- and I'm entitled to it.

Actually, maganda naman talaga si Eva and there's really nothing much to "change"... enhancements na lang and finishing touches ang kailangan to complete the package... the only makeover i really saw is the transition from the use of ultra-thick make up to soft-tone make up to jive in with the Miss Universe pageant's redefined image.

Miss Brazil Nationa Costumes through the decades, thanks to the Miss Brazil Message board. You could really hand it to them for having vintage photos.

In my opinion, it's the best national costume I've ever seen in any pageant in my entire life.

It's so huge that all the 75 other candidates were literally asked by the choreographer to move in front of the stage just to accommodate Flavia as she makes her way to the center of the stage moments after they sang the "Ole, Ole" opening number. Wala talaga akong masabi. Once I get hold of a picture of it, I'll post it agad here. :)

And just to add, the 1989 Miss Universe pageant production is considered by many the BEST ever during the Eighties. Cancun should host MU again in the near future.

BREAKING NEWS

MISS AUSTRIA 2002 CROWNED!

http://www.bellezavenezolana.com/images/MissAustriaWorld2002.JPG

Celine Roschek (center), 18 years old hailing from Bisamberg, won the Miss Austria 2002 title last Sunday night. She will represent her country in Miss World 2002 set for November in South Africa.

Her runners-up include Nicole Kern of Vienna (left) and Lerna Birnstingl of Steiermark (right). The finalists were Katrin Wachter and Lisa Kretzner.

Nicole Kern will most likely represent Austria in the Miss Europe 2002 pageant set for December.

How I wish Austria would some day be back in Miss Universe... The last time an Austrian participated in MU was in 1999, with Katja Giebner as its representative. :)

REgarding the new Miss Austria, last year's winner was more beautiful. Last year's winner can be Miss Universe material also, but the sad note is, even if the Austrians prioritize Miss World, it's not shown in Austria and the Austrians don't give a damn about it also... hehehe

but, in the brighter note:
So if there are 80 countries confirmed in joinning Miss Universe, ano pang natitirang countries ang sasali pero wala pang winner?

MEET NATASCHA... :)

A woman of two worlds...
http://www.uol.com.ve/estampas/2002/04/07/images/nati1.jpg http://www.uol.com.ve/estampas/2002/04/07/images/miss1.jpg http://www.uol.com.ve/estampas/2002/04/07/images/miss3.jpg

Natascha Vanessa Borger Sevilla was born of a German father and a Venezuelan mother. She has lived both in Venezuela and Germany. Two years ago, she joined the Miss Venezuela 2000 pageant that was in search of the Venezuelan representative for Miss Universe 2001. She entered that pageant as Miss Yaracuy. She did not make it to the semi-finals.

A year later, Natascha opted to move to Germany. She joined the Miss Deutschland 2002 pageant that was in search of the German bet for Miss Universe 2002. She entered the pageant as Miss Hamburg. This time around, Natascha won the coveted title. She is now on her way to the most prestigious beauty pageant in the universe-- the Miss Universe pageant.

The last time Germany made it to the semi-finals of Miss Universe was way back in 1989, when Andrea Stelzer made it to the Top 10 in Cancun. Andrea herself, was also bi-racial. She underwent 5 attempts to represent South Africa either in Miss Universe or Miss World. But all proved futile. Finally, Andrea moved to Germany (her father's country) and won the Miss Deutschland 1989 crown.

WOW! So Germany seems to be the land of luck for aspiring bi-racial Miss Universe representatives... :)

In my opinion, 1st runner-up Nicole Kern should really be sent to MU2002 talaga... sending her to Miss Europe is a BIG MISTAKE... Oh well, like Lara said, Austria isn't really into beauty pageants... Too bad... :(
