I like this one than Who Wants to be a Millionaire primarily because of the insults that the host is giving to the contestants. :D And I think this is more challenging than the other because the questions are not multiple choices.

last monday's episode was truly disappointing, to say the least.

imagine vaugh, the professor-contestant,
who answered all questions correctly except for two,
having been booted out by his fellow contestants,

who was booted out in the next round for the same reason. :grrr:

it's a good thing that terri, the eventual winner,
who was statistically the weakest link in the initial rounds
acquitted herself by doing relatively well towards the end.

the show is ok. i kinda' like the host. she's really nasty but i guess that's why people love to watch it. i think the only time i saw her smile was during the celebrity edition of the show, when rob schneider practically threw himself at her.

what i don't like about the show is that non-deserving people reach the finals. and there is a tendency na yung mga girls conniving to outvote the men. i wish di na lang pinagbobotohan yung weakest link. that the statistical weakest link is booted out automatically.

just like last monday nga, vaughn was voted out. dan didn't even think na he would be the next voted out. it has always happened that when there are 3 left and the 2 are women, it's the guy who is always voted out.

I've been here in the states for the last couple of weeks and there's this new gameshow that has got me glued to the set. It's called the weakest link and it's a combination of "Who wants to be a Millionaire" and "Survivor".

I think the host is very good and also has a lot to do with the success of the game.

i didn't really like Weakest Link at first for i found Anne Robinson too *****y and nasty... but after i pushed myself to "endure" one episode, i got hooked! i ended up liking Bancroft! she's really funny and i love seeing the contestant's reactions! some look like they're ready to strangle her while others take her "insults" in good stride! the questions are more challenging too, it's not in multiple choice like in "Millionaire..." and minsan Regis is too patronizing na rin! saka ang cute din nung pagiging parang Survivor nila - voting off the weakest link and getting the voted-off player to comment - aliw!
question lang, has anyone won prize money bigger than $100,000??? all the episodes i've seen had the strongest link bringing home like only $80,000+... that's what they get for not banking anything in the preliminary stages of the game!
if u want strategy beyond saving all ur lifelines for the big kahuna questions, weakest link is way better than millionaire!

yeah, they had some celebrities during sweeps last may. they featured the contestants from Survivor I one time and richard was voted off first.:p

surprising as it may seem, robinson isn't as sarcastic or brutal in real life. at least that's what she says. she was a guest on The Rosie O'Donell Show and she seemed quite likable. she says that the person we see on Weakest Link is just am image she portrays.

I'm not really sure of the mechanics pero I read somewhere that its a contest to be played by 8 to 10 players yata. Each one will be asked questions in succession, parang chain. Then the contestants will be asked to vote-off one of them, the one they all think is the "weakest link" dahil hindi masagutan yung questions.

This round of questions and voting-off goes on until only the "strongest link" remains.

Parang combination ng "WW2BAM" and "Survivor" ang dating ng show. Of course, it comes complete with dazzling cameraworks, lighting and sound effects that heighten the sense of excitement.

If you were to describe the show in terms of other shows, it would be Fifteen to One crossed with Big Brother. Rather than getting William G Stewart, Davina McCall and Anne Robinson in a house to see what would happen under the pretence of socialite experiment, this goes the way of a quiz where the contestants vote each other out until the last person left wins all the cash that they'd accumulated as a team.

Psychological counselling may or may not be on hand for losing contestants. And blimey, they might need it because hosting the show is Anne Robinson in ultra-stern mode, but more of that in a moment. (Behind the scenes rumours have reported there have indeed been a few bruised egos during production.)

The rules then. In the beginning there are nine people and a possible £10,000 up for grabs – and that's a lot of money for a daily game show, let alone a BBC daily game show. Questions are fired off to people one at a time over a time limit which starts at 3 minutes and gets 10 seconds lower after each round. For each correct answer they get a 'link' in the 'chain' which begins at nothing and gradually goes up towards a thousand pounds through nine links, the values between each link getting higher each time. There is a thousand pounds maximum to be won in each round.

If someone gets a question wrong then the chain is broken and they've got to start again from the bottom. Therefore, if everybody in Round One gets their question right straight off then they'll win the thousand pounds on offer for that round. As this is extremely unlikely, there is another way to build up cash. At any time before a question is asked of someone they can say "Bank" to safeguard the cash they've got, but then the chain is reset to £0. This means they can amass their £1000 by several smaller chains, but this requires more correct answers (e.g. five chains of four answers in a row = 20 correct answers, instead of 9.)

At the end of every round each person votes out who they think is The Weakest Link – in the chain, do you see? – by writing the names of another contestant on the bits of metal in front of them (with pens that don't seem to write very well, it would seem). Whilst this is going on, Voiceover Man says something along the lines of 'the statistics show that the strongest link for this round was Simon who got all his questions correct and banked £600. The weakest link was Nigel who not only got all his questions wrong but is also wearing pink underpants. Of course only the contestants can decide.'

We then see everybody's decision. Anne will ask why they picked such and such. The point of this is somewhat dubious, because nearly always they'll say "because they answered their questions wrongly". Anne will sometimes come back with "But you were rubbish also, weren't you? Come on then, Outside. Now." After all the verbal fisticuffs, the contestant attracting the most votes from their peers will get a curt "Goodbye" from Anne and have to walk out of the set.

Now, the set is fairly nice, but it's also quite clumsy. It would have been better if there were some doors at the back where eliminated contestants could walk out. As it is, they have to step very carefully around the semicircle to walk off. It's not very elegant. And they're using those lights yet again? Did David Young buy a job lot or something?

Furthermore, if there are equal votes then the strongest link (the person getting the most questions correct) gets the casting vote. Now, they can change this from the person they actually put down – but usually there's no real reason why they would ever want to, so why ask?

There's a quick post-game interview with the losing contestant (usually with things like "I hope Natalie dies a long, painful death. And I think that Nigel will be out next round.")

Continue until only two people remain. Yes, that's seven rounds that are nearly identical. There's then a kind of a bonus round where the two finalists work together for a 90-second round and the winnings are trebled (quick! call Action Time!).

Once Anne has told them how rubbish they were for a final time, they decide who wins the pot by virtue of a quiz in the style of a penalty shootout competition. It looks like the batteries in the Anne Robinson robot starts leaking voltage at this point as the gaps between her phrases get longer and longer in what can be described at best as a way of increasing attention and at worst as a way of being incredibly annoying: "What colour is... the... character... of Colonel... Mustard... represented by in the... game... C... l... u... e... d... o?".

In the final, each player has to step forward to the single podium to receive the questions which is actually quite annoying and looks very A-Level Theatre Studies. The winner gets all the money run over all the rounds. The loser wins nothing.

So, does the whole package fit together as well as Millionaire? If we're being honest, not really, because there's a rather long list of (admittedly minor) niggles on our mind. Allow us to brain dump.

Firstly, the title of the show sometimes doesn't deliver on its promise. Clever and tactical voting often dictates that people vote out a stronger player so they have a bigger chance of winning at the end. So then, neither is this show the Weakest Link or the strongest link but rather the link that was at least six and a half times as good as the weakest link, but only about two thirds as strong as the strongest link.

Next is the promise that there's £10,000 at stake. Yeah, well there is theoretically, but they rarely pay out anything approaching that. But, to be fair, it's still possibly the highest dosh-attracting show on daytime TV, which is to be welcomed (does anyone still get excited by the £2000 doled out by Wheel of Fortune?)

The questions are clever in that they are all pitched in such a way that you think you should know them and yet you manage to get the wrong answer (such as "What is the smallest planet in the Solar System – Mercury or Pluto?") A few are uneven in difficulty, with some contestants being asked daisy-cutters such as "What is a quid?" (like... duuuuh) which makes those contestants look better than they really are.

The chain of values motif is clever, but the ramped values don't seem steep enough. Would you rather have £450 guaranteed or the chance of getting £600? Millionaire works because the double-or-nothing ramp is very steep, so even £250,000 winners are still tempted to at least consider the next question.

That said, there are some subtleties in the scoring. Players need to decide for themselves whether they should bank the cash and be seen as a team player or hold their nerve and win cash a lot quicker but risk incurring the wrath of the whole team when they lose the £200 or whatever that has been built up. It's still a bit dull when they insist on banking every other question though. Mistakes are magnified as the rounds go on as the questions come round a lot faster and players being tested a lot more – it's no wonder that in the post-game interview a lot of the players say that that was the hardest thing they'd ever done and with weak links going round by round there is always the added pressure of expectation of doing well.

But the really, really bizarre thing about this show is Anne Robinson's no nonsense attitude. We half expect her to take out a gun and shoot the losers (now there's an idea for a show!) The ultra-serious approach is certainly an interesting experiment, and credit to them for trying.

With Anne having an attitude like "You have banked £20. You could have won £1000. That's pathetic." you as a viewer feel bad. Don't get us wrong – this kind of negative entertainment can be a perfectly valid objective for a TV show, but it does take a lot of getting used to. That said, once you've got over the first couple of episodes she becomes really entertaining and she's only saying out loud what we're actually thinking at home.

Take this for example. Let's imagine a show called "The Nicest Link" hosted by Les Dennis or somebody. Instead of "Well in that round team you banked a pathetic £50," we'll have "well team, in that round you banked £50, well done!" Instead of "You work for an insurance company, how come you didn't know what 25% of 400 was?" it would be "well, it looks like you got a question wrong." Instead of "Julia, in fact you were FAR worse than any other player in that round but it's votes that count and with four votes Bob, you ARE the Weakest Link - goodbye," we'd instead get "well Bob, I'm afraid you've been voted off. Have you had a good day? Excellent. Let's give him a round of applause!"

Let's be honest, it's not as good is it? It's true that this show is a lot less so much about winning as not losing, and we know that's unpopular in some circles, but the fact is that the show is actually pretty compelling once the initial culture shock has worn off.

Champions League

The compulsive nature of the show has meant that the BBC has promoted it for some shows on BBC1 in a prime time slot. The Weakest Link: Champion's League was born with slight changes to the format. First, bigger studio and more importantly a studio audience. Opinion is divided as to whether this is a good thing or not, it loses the claustrophobic atmosphere of the daily afternoon show but it does feel more like a Coliseum and as such the insults become that little bit more humiliating. It is only television however.

Secondly, this version is played with eight champions from the afternoon daily show. This is genius because theoretically the team should do better because they've already proven themselves but no, champions are liable to making lots of mistakes too, magnified by the harsh but fair tongue of Anne Robinson.

Thirdly, and this has been complained about by other channels because it's paid out from the licence fee, the prize money has been doubled. There's now £2,500 up for grabs each round, eight players to start the game with instead of nine and the money is doubled for the final round. That's a total of £20,000 up for grabs.

It's hardly Millionaire but perversely, even though the prize money is the main "thing" of the show, it's also the least important thing about the show. Oh, and the cards have been replaced with whizzy electronic pencils.

There's a risk that the Beeb are now going to overdose on "nasty" shows which may pale in comparison to this original. In the meantime, though, the BBC can enjoy in having their first big hit of the decade.

i got to watch the original gameshow back in the US... i totally dig Anne Robinson! she's very sarcastic and somewhat rude that it's appealing... :D anyway, i think her demeanor is all part of the game to psyche out the contestants... she does it so well that there are times when a contestant is booted out, they cry in front of the camera and wish that they can whup Anne Robinson's a$$ for insulting them with their defeat :glee:

Edu's style has always been to make fun of somebody (even himself) but with a smile and in such a way that the other person won't take it personally.:ahh:

i was watching the weakest link here...and there were only 2 contestants left...and one of the final questions was 'who is the first woman philippine president who ousted dictator ferdinand marcos'...at syempre nag-isip ng mabuti yung contestant, kse pag-nasagot nya yon, sya na *** strongest link & the other contestant is the loser (weakest link)...nag-isip sya ng mabuti, tapos sagot nya is 'buttha'...he he! :D sino 'yon?...syempre mali, nung ni-reveal na *** right answer...nag-react *** contestant as if it's on the tip of her tongue, he he! :glee: ...

actually, i was thinking, paano kung total strangers na yung mga contestants? hindi na sila magkakakilala kaya wala ng masyadong bangayan :p sana maremedyohan nila to.

Sobrang astig talaga ang Weakest Link!!!

I like the concept of the group building their cash stash together pero along the way, ihuhulog nila isa-isa ang mga taong sa tingin nila ay "Weakest Link" (i.e. threat sa kanila pagdating sa Head-To-Head).

It's a nice concept and it makes the show one thrilling roller-coaster ride at talagang you'll watch it until the very end when the "Strongest Link" emerges the winner.

The Rock says this, it's even better than what The Rock expected.*okay* The show is fast-paced. No waiting around and thinking of some answer that's going to be wrong anyway. You rely solely on yourself and half-rely on your teammates. No audience, no phone-a-friend, no computer limiting your answers. Kung di mo alam, sorry ka na lang.:belat: Edu's hosting is a perfect fit. He removed his trademark smile and pa-cute tendencies and instead became more sarcastic, cold, unfeeling, and downright insulting.:evilgrin:

I agree with all of you. The Weakest Link is a great game show kasi it's engaging and exciting. Lagi na nga lang natatanggal iyong picks ko and I hate it when the strongest link is removed para lang makalamang sila. I guess it's the object of the game and the fact na naiinis ako is what makes me tune in. Edu is perfect! Nagpipigil ng tawa. Heh. :p

Yeah, she didn't finish college, but here in Britain, she was one of the most prominent journalists before she actually hosted The Weakest Link. Tapos noon, she moved to the States to do the US version and to earn more money. Mas nakakainis dito sa England, kasi maliit lang ang winnings, tapos talagang pinagtitripan ng mga contestants usually ang strongest link para no competition sa last round. Daya nga, e.

Anyway, back to Anne. Did you know that she is a recovered alcoholic? Sa sobrang gahaman niya sa alak noon, she lost custody of her daughter and it to. Ganda nga bio niya, e. How she resurrected her career and her life is remarkable. And now she's earning 2 million dollars a year sa States.

Today's episode with the DJ's siyempre was very exciting..
The DWTM tandem of Moe and Miles vs KCFM tandem of Chico and Delamare. You kinda know it was coming...

I was really thrilled to see who would become the strongest link in that round coz i knew that their would be a tie..
Miles was very fortunate to be the strongest link at that round... I mean Delamar was in a hot streak...

I thought for sure Delamar would win if the Chico-Delamar tandem where in the finals...

Anyways... Great show!.. Nice Episode! The questions where a lot harder though compared to the questions received by the PBA stars... :D

Great show, kaya naman pala after barely a week of showing it eh ang dami ko nang nabasa sa thread na ito, and count me in sa list ng mga bumibilib sa show na ito.

I was just bored when it came down to the final three links. Mo and Miles were out of sink but since Chico was the odd one out, eh aalis talaga sya. Miles...you dont remember Darwin? Anyway pag tense k talaga eh ganun nga, nasa dila mo palagi. But to go scoreless in the last round certainly aint pretty.

Delamar was great sana pero breaks of the game ang nangyari dahil si Miles ang strongest link sa round na yon. I was cheering for Del, ang ganda nya don.

Great show, with a great host. Give this show another week or two and Millionaire will slowly lose its lofty position as the king of gameshows.

It was my first time to watch TWL last night and I must say the show's format and concept are fantastic! The only downside on last night's episode were the contestants themselves! It was so frustrating kasi for them to blow those easy questions and bank carelessly.

As for the host, he is just too tame. And his "goodbye" thingie is so artificial. Dapat the host should be someone really intimidating, who doesn't have to exert much effort in freaking the contestants out! Dapat si... JESSICA ZAFRA. She is kinda Anne Robinsan-esque kasi in here remarks.

Isa pa, the Philippines is not yet ready for an "Anne Robinson"-type of game show hosting, I guess. Tama lang na si Edu Manzano lang muna ang nandyan, and besides he's doing his job well.

Sana aga-agahan naman nila ang time slot ng WL. Well, come to think of it, at least masasabi ko na without batting an eyelash na "Buset, pinupuyat ako ni Edu!" :glee:

Kung di sila nagbabank habang maliit pa ang pot ay malamang siguro na malaki ang pot money na nakuha nung nanalo kasi kayang-kaya naman nilang sagutin ang mga tanong lalo na nung 1st 3 rounds na kung di sila nagbabank ng maaga ay naabot nila ang maximum na 125,000/round.

Sana ay politicians ng ibat-ibang lugar at positions ang kinuha nilang contestans kasi halos mga konsehal at mga taga-manila ang kasali. Sana ay nagsama sila ng isa sa mga spice boys o bright boys sa congress at sina ralph, kiko, loren etc. sa senado. Mga mayor tulad ni joey marquez, mga gob. etc.

Ok yung episode kanina.*okay* IMHO, this was the best episode so far. Magagaling sila.

Kumbaga sa gitna lang at low profile para di mapagdiskitahan ng ibang contestants.

So far, this was the worst episode of TWL. The only reason why I continued watching this episode was because of Jen. I just liked the way how she played the game. You can see that she was having fun unlike the other contestants.

They were not able to answer some easy questions like:

True, this was perhaps the dumbest show I've watched.

And to think they were university students.

The problem was that the good players got booted out early. Ayan tuloy P80,000 lang nabank nila lahat. Mga natira puro mahina, except for Marc I guess. Bilib nga ako kay Marc e kasi you never really thought he was quite knowledgeable. I guess start pa lang he was keeping a low profile.

Problema kasi tong mga studyanteng to walang inisip kundi sino ang threat sa kanila sa last round instead of who can help answer questions hence earn more money... feeling siguro nila magagaling sila lahat... ayan natira mga hindi marunong, walang maibank.

Kung ganito ang trend palagi, kung puro gulangan, palaging maliit ang prize.

its not a good feel show after hearing contestants being interviewed and they blame each other......
i guess the show must evaluate itself... we need to bring peace not war to people....

They had nice views and insights in their Metro section and Sunday Magazine.

I guess the strategy there is to appear really really smart in the first 2 rounds but them keep a really really low profile in the middle until the final rounds.

Strategic oustings only surface during the middle rounds, and the real weakest links are voted out during the first rounds.

A few comments on tonight's episode:

- What's up with those guys on tonight's episode? They voted-off Maricel because she's a girl.:down: They're a bunch of chauvinists.

- Naawa ako kay Wilson kasi nagkamalisiya sa isang question and that's the reason why he was voted-off. Nangingiyakngiyak pa nga siya when he was giving his statements after he was voted-off.

- So far, in this episode, it had the best finale IMO.:up: 1 on 1 between Richard and Ramon. They both got 5 correct answers and it ended up in a sudden death match. In sudden death, they were both wrong in their given first questions. But, in the end, Richard came out as the victor.

Surprisingly, Richard and Ramon have already met in the past in another quiz contest.

This episode will be one very tough act to follow. Richard Pante and Atty. Ramon de las Alas have known each other for years so obviously they protected each other. A combination of both strategy and mental acumen pulled them through.

Their final showdown will definitely be a classic. Too bad that a contestant has to sit out six months before joining again as per contest rules.

My comments for last nyt's ep:

* ang bagal ng pacing ng show... because of the contestants themselves...ang mga naiwan yung medyo mga weakest links talaga... sayang yung Peter and Teddy...yun ang magagaling eh...

* Sobrang nadidsmaya lang ako sa mga kontestants... kawawa naman yung Boy... yun dapat ang gift niya sa asawa niya... :(

* First time kong nakarinig na di siya na disappointed na siya ang unang na-kicked-out sa sa 1st round... in fact he was happy daw to join the game... I forgot nga lang his name... nevertheless...I admire him for that... :clap:

* Dahil sa bagal ng pacing ng show...di niyo ba na-noticed na ang bagal din magsalita si Edu???
