My bank just sent me an app form for a free upgrade of my ATM card to a Visa Electron debit card, which when charged, subtracts the money straight from my account.

There's appeal in the idea that I won't need to pay monthly bills, and I don't need the strict credit history that a normal credit card application requires.

Of course, I'm understandably leery at the prospect that my card number could be used by uscrupulous elements to charge for stuff straight from my ATM, without hope of cash recovery if that should happen.

So, any Electron users out there? How's the card usage working out? And is Visa Electron valid for Internet purchases where Visa is accepted?

Just to pre-empt KDanny, here's the past thread we had on debit cards: http://www.pinoyexchange.com/forums/showthread.php3?s=&threadid=36696 :D

Not a debit card user here, sorry.

Some advice, if you care for it. If you must go with this product and wish to protect yourself from losses due to fraud/misuse, one way is to limit the potential losses. How? Open another account (Account 2) with the same bank and keep most of your money there. Move funds from Account 2 to Account 1 only when needed, and keep the Account 1 balance as low as possible. Your losses should then be limited to the (low) balance in Account 1. Gets?

hi there I'm a visa electrn user. This is kinda a month delayed but I have been using my card for almost a couple of months now. I'm pretty satisfied with the service... except recently na may nangyaring blunder but was attended to within 24 hours.
Its not a credit card. It basically deducts whatever purchases you have from your ATM account. so kung walang laman ang bank account mo on the time of your purchase you can't use your card. The advantage of using Visa electron is not carrying around too much change and avoiding to line up on an ATM machine... At kung walang cash and unavailable ang machine nila to swipe the card hindi ka makakabili... it all depends sa user...

i've been a visa electron user since last year! napahiya ako dati sa PAL when i tried buying domestic plane tickets kasi parang 4k-5k lang pala limit ko per day... puede naman yata apply for a higher debit limit pero ayoko din! :beam:

has anyone ever used an Equitable electron to purchase items abroad via internet?

how long does it take to get this card?

I know several people with Union EON but they have problems encoding cards and God only knows when they will issue a card

i don't have an equitable visa electron but i do have a unionbank visa electron. you can really use it to purchase via the internet. my friend who doen't have a credit card used his unionbank visa electron to purchase something in the internet. ok naman ang transaction.

di ba sa equitable, you have to open a savings account then apply for a debit card. i don't know how long it will take. sa unionbank kasi i got my card notice after 7 business days. in less than 2 weeks, nakuha ko na card ko and i have it for more than 3 years na.

has anyone ever used an Equitable electron to purchase items abroad via internet?AFAIK, EPCI Visa Electron works only with swipe machines. how long does it take to get this card?It took me less than a week.I know several people with Union EON but they have problems encoding cards and God only knows when they will issue a cardUnion Bank seems to be in the news these past several days as I see people queud up in their ATM machines. Here's a post from ph-cyberview mailing list:Enticed by Jim's story of his positive experience with Unionbank EON CyberAccount's convenience of paying bills on-line through the Internet, I got one through. Well, I'm just about fed up with its incoveniences.

(1) Their network is almost always down when you need it. 15th/30th? Forget it. Either it goes down on those days or the next day.

I had the unfortunate experience of needing cash yesterday, and I couldn't withdraw money through the other bank's ATM machines because Unionbank's network was down. I went to the nearest branch to me, Anonas, and what greeted me was a long line of people snaking outside the bank, lined up on their ATM. Inside was not better -- filled to the brim. I decided to pass by at 10pm at night, the ATM was closed, shuttered!

(2) If you need more than PhP 20K, your out of luck. The ATM machine has a limit of 20K per day. So what do you do? Go over the counter, right? I waited for 2 hours over the counter while the branch e-mailed their Eon Account operations center and waited for its reply to allow me to make a withdrawal over the counter. They then asked me to fill up a new signature card so that it could be faxed to Cebu!

(3) Security? I mistyped my password last year and was locked out of the Internet portal. I got through their call center and recounted what had happened to the helpful technical support. I gave my username and account number. She was so helpful that she reset my password to the password I wanted without verifying my identity!

Now for my question. Is there a bank which offers an account which allows people to pay on-line but gives better service than Unionbank?

i can only think of unionbank and equitable pci when it comes to visa electron debit cards. how about mastercard electronics cards? i'm not sure if they can be used online but maybe yes if they display the mastercard electronics logo. just ask first. i have a BDO mastercard electronics ATM. all you need is to get a BDO atm savings account. minimum amt. to open is 1k only.

this was posted on their site:

"Cash can be withdrawn from over 1 million Cirrus ATMs in 120 countries worldwide and 4,000 BDO Expressnet and Megalink ATMs locally. Shop and entertain using the Personal Identification Number (PIN) or signing for transactions with over 10,000 BDO and EN-EPS (Express Payment System) merchants here in the Philippines and at over millions of Maestro and MasterCard Electronic merchant locations worldwide."

i used to have an Equitable Visa Electron. it's quite useful and you can monitor all your accounts throught their online site. i even used it once overseas when i was in dire need of cash. do yourself a favor and get one.

Hey there, I am a Unionbank Visa debit card holder for 1 year now and I am very satisfied with it. You don't have to carry cash, you only purchase when you have money in it, thus avoiding credit and interest, and it's also an ATM. For me it's much better than ATM and credit card.
