I think that any of the following languages ought to be added:
1. LATIN -- Latin is the very language on which French, Spanish, Italian, and a lot of parts of English are based on. Learning Latin will not only allow us to be able to come into a greater sense of the Western side of our heritage, but to a greater grasp and understanding of the other Western languages as well.
2. SPANISH -- Easily one of the most popular languages, Spanish is already a part of the curriculum in some schools. In the different areas of the world, Spanish is the dominant language (or base for dialect).
3. FRENCH -- The language of romance, and the lingua franca that replaced Latin during the height of the French empire under Louis. Practically as popular as Latin, French is another globally-reknowned language.
4. MANDARIN/CHINESE -- The major language of the East is spreading rapidly throughout the globe, as there are many Chinese people in different parts of the world. It is even predicted that Mandarin will be one of the most popular languages in the world, second only to either English or Spanish.

Whether it's part of the curriculum or not, I think that taking Chinese will be useful and relevant. You might want to think of the 21st century as the "Chinese Century" in Asia in much the same way as the 20th century was the "Japanese Century". The Chinese nation will be an increasingly important economic, cultural, and maybe political force in this region during your lifetime.

Why not? But it is not a language to be taken for a few terms. It should be taught starting nursery or elementary level.
Then again, English will never fade out naman e. How do u do www.nameofsitehere.com in Chinese? D ba u can't?
E, the Chinese are now learning English just to be able to surf the net. No english, no net. And we all know, ang net ang present and future.

if i had it my way, i would let the student choose which language he or she wants to learn. however, to be able to master a certain language, a student must be constantly exposed to it for a very long period of time. i think it is very recommendable for the student to start learning at a very young age. the problem with this is that the current educational system in the country will not be able to support such a process or curriculum.
i think mandarin is ok. it is a very widely-used language anyway. personally, i want to learn japanese and spanish. but i think its too late for that now, unless i migrate to either japan or spain right? i do not agree with latin. learning latin isn't being progressive.
another thing, if someone wants to learn a language, one must know why he or she wants to learn it. focus more on how or when you would use that language. wala lang. random thoughts on the issue. :D

Know what, I've actually read in several articles that Mandarin is more widely spoken than English in the world.
Spanish would be a nice language to learn, so law students can read the "originals" like Manresa, Viada, etc. :)

ok lang, as long as there's a good professor to patiently guide you through it... buti na lang samen na-wipe out at napilitang mag-Nihongo ang lahat. wala kseng prof na available eh. baka there'd be 6 units worth of Japanese tuloy. *cringe*
which reminds me, i miss school...

I study in a Catholic-Chinese girls school and god I should have at least listened to my chinese teachers
I mean the lesson was boring and useless, the teacher stinks, masungit pa (since I was half-pinoy, I look a bit pinoy) but my god! advantage yung fluent in Mandarin like my friend's sister got a job na grabe yung sweldo! just to translate stuff in Chinese! In demand yung mga Fluent in Chinese!
And my friends like when we go around Greenhills (mababaw lang to ha), they bargain like my Aunts but they get what they want because they were able to spaek and persuade the Chinese.
The future is with the Chinese, sana man lang mag-aral sila ng English para di tayo mahirapan grrr
