I've been here in Cali for 17 years na pero every time I go back sa Philippines mas masaya pa rin talaga.
I miss the beach outings, night outs and reunions with my remaining family and friends there. I'm already looking forward to spending time with them again on my next visit.

Couple of friends just came from there. Uggghhhh...miss it badly. Been here for 18 years, it gets better, but it will always stay with you. Like desire I can't wait to go back. I already got a ticket reserved for Dec 20, I just have to make/save my money. It's family that I miss most of all, they treat you so well and take you in like you never left. Think about them all the time.

Been here 16 years and I've only been to Pinas twice in 3 week summer vacation intervals. First visit back was Summer '97 when I was 19 yrs old. and Summer '98 when I was 20 yrs old.
Top three things why I miss the Philippines:
--Tropics Weather
--Tropical Scenery
--Memories it evokes from the relatives you have there that knew you from way back when you were born.
From my dad's house in Antipolo there's a highway called Sumulong Highway that we took to go to Pagsanjan, Laguna where my paternal Lola has a small old spanish style ancestral house.
The route we take is longer since we're not using the "freeways" there in Pinas and so this weaves us in and out of small towns and a view of Laguna De Bay and then rice fields and more rice fields and coconut trees and off road fruit stands and more green, green, lush tropical scenery.
Wowwow...you know how many pics of that I took. I love the humidity. I love the tropics. You can't see that here in California that's for sure.
And the feeling I get when I see the few close relatives I have there who knew about me and my life there in Pinas before we left in 1986 is the best.
I guess if you don't have close family there like if they're all here abroad with you already or you didn't grow up there then there won't be a reason to miss it as much as others.
But you'll still miss Pinas because of the beautiful landscape!!

witty_gal and all of you who are losing it. Hang in there! It gets better, really. There will never be a place like home but don't worry it's not going anywhere. It will always be there for you. We are survivors, welcome to the world of Filipinos living outside PI. Meanwhile make the best of your new surroundings. Don't compare, it will never be like PI but it will have it's own advantages.

I miss all my friends that wept for me in the airport when I left... that was the most dramatic moment in my life...

I've been here since 94 and everyday I wish I were back home. I've had a few Christmases alone and they were not fun. The thing is, there are so many other Filipinos in the same situation, especially here in Southern California that they will eventually find you. I'm pretty sure you'll have good company. Hang in there.

Hi everyone!
Yep, miss ko rin ang Pilipinas. I've been here 10 years, and the first four was the roughest. Somehow the homesickness wore off, except everytime umuuwi ako sa Pilipinas super lungkot ako pagbalik dito. I realized I can never relive my experiences back home. All of them are just memories. Senti tuloy ako. Anyway, I'll be spending this Christmas in Manila. Yeyy! I can't wait!!!

i hope i get to meet friends like that. been here for almost a year and almost all my friends are either my kapatids' friends or my husband's ilocano friends (which is nakaka-OP kc i'm not ilocano). i feel like i'm standing behind his shadow, like i lost my own persona. no girlfriends whatsoever.. and the saddest part is, i can't drive so i can't even drive my son around!! hay naku, i have to wait for my husband to get off work pa to make gala. and it's so annoying that i can't take him to places kc wala akong alam pwedeng puntahan na nde pa sya nakakapunta. do you guys get me? it's so frustrating.
i miss the usual maingay gimmickans in makati and malate (i heard libis is thriving, too). i guess america is making me pretty domestic. i actually like just eating out, watching movies, and arcade!! stuff i did when i was a seventh grader in manila. haven't attended a single party in months!! i miss having my friends around.

hello all!
pareho kami halos ni kat and witty_gal. my whole barkada (14 people) sent me off sa airport last month. grabe, ang drama nila, andaming iyakan at apologies dahil nag-away kaming lahat sa despedida ko (a week before i left), so i really didn't expect to see them there.
i miss them like heck. i miss the gimiks and the sitting sa sunken garden and the cheap movies and the cheap food. dito kasi i feel like i'm starting from scratch...making friends all over again (a nightmare for antisocial me) habang solid pa rin sila dun sa Pinas.
and i miss the weather too. kahit summer dito, ang weird dahil my usually oily skin is drying out and i'm breaking out too. i think i'll hate it here even more when winter comes (i'm not much of a polar bear).
hopefully, i'll be busier in the fall and i won't have the free time on my hands to think about what i'm missing back home. life goes on! but until that happens i'll still be missing my home. :(

Hello Everyone!
I've been here in NY for almost 3 yrs now. I know it's hard to forget all the fun and laughters that we kinda used to when were still in the Phil.
:) :) :)

- the typhoon names :glee:

- the "misadventures" around our place
- this little hill we all overlooking @ our subdivision

Hey Triglyceride...really? Cool! Saan?
We're in a subdivision called Filinvest East Homes...well that's where my dad's house is. I know the nearest palengke is called Masinag.
But I don't usually stay there long...last time I was there my dad was usually at work and it gets lonely...so I opt to crash at my other relatives on my mom's side at UP Village near Claret Church and have my dad pick me up there na lang when we go places. That was the arrangement.
Kaylan ka uuwi ulit? Sheesh you work naman ah...save up lang and then grab a ticket and see your Mommy!
Last I saw my dad was 3 to 4 years ago Summer vacation 97 and 98 and then before that I didn't see him for 10 years or so.
So I think I deserve to see him from time to time para he's reminded of his biological children that he didn't raise...blah blah blah....you know with the divorce and moving away to the US and all.
When all is said and done he's still my father, I only have one, and thank God he's still alive for me to turn to for some kind of guidance and love. I guess...weird kasi when you don't live with a parent day in and day out.
How old ka ulit Trig? I'm 23 you're 21 right? I think you mentioned before you work and go to school at the same time right? Part Time or Full Time school?
I've been a full time student and part time worker for the first 3 years of college and then when I transferred to CalState I decided to quit working and do full time school till I graduated which was 2 more years. Well 1 year has passed and I'm burned out, tired with a GPA bordering on probation pero dipa below 2.0 :p .... stupid Managerial Econ and Finance...aaahhhkk...I don't want to be a full time student anymore:p
Kaya when I come back after vacation, it's off to find full time work in la la land and finishing school part time in the evenings na lang for me. Like so many of my classmates in the evening classes anyway...they all work and they're all older than me.

Naku, pa'no ba 'yan?
'Ber months na! Sa Philippines, magsa-start na ang four-month Christmas Season.
Pretty soon, we'll be hearing the strains of "Christmas In Our Hearts" by Jose Mari and Liza Chan at "Pasko Na, Sinta Ko" by Gary Valenciano. Magsisimula na ang carolling!
Frenetic Christmas shopping will be everywhere. Malls and tiangges will be filled by eager Christmas shoppers. Balikbayans will soon take over the Metropolis. The youth will be on an endless gimik binge!
Manila and major Philippine cities will be ablaze in lights as they take on a very unique charm during the Holidays.
The air will soon turn crisp and cool, and will soon mix with the aroma of puto bumbong and bibingka. Church bells will be pealing.
So mga kababayan!!

Filinvest...Masinag. Off Sumulong hi-way I live at the other side... - the Ortigas side at this place called Valley View. So you see, I'm the Valley girl here ;) :glee:
You're gonna visit this year right? For the holidays? You mentioned that you might leave this October? WOW!!! Saya!!! Have fun!
Girl...I want to go home for the holidays this year. I've been planning on that for quite sometime now. I'm still waiting for my grade from this transfer math class I took this summer. It's the only class I need to tranfer to SFSU * Anne goes there * spring of next year. I'm done with all my tranfer classes and all I'm waiting for is this freakin' math grade. That's why I didn't sign up for fall classes this coming semester. I hope I passed. It's in the Quantitative Reasoning cluster or whatever they call it. So when I get into SFSU next spring, that'll be another CSU student PExer in here besides you and Anne. :) I'm currently looking for a second job so that I could pay for my school expenses next spring AND hopefully save enough money to buy plane tickets :) I was a full time student and I work part - time...although sometimes it seems like it's full time...
what's your major? If you don't mind me asking. Is it business? That's my major. My concentration, well I'm not so sure yet. I picked Computer Info Sys but I'm also thinking of Finance ...heck I'm also considering to have a minor in Econ..but you know..I'm getting way ahead of myself here hehehehehe...
When you come back from vacation, that'll be your last year right? Good for you girl!
and about my age, sure I can be 21. I stopped counting at that age anyway :D
Wow! I bet your Dad's looking forward to spending his first ever holidays with his baby girl and baby boy in ..more than 10 years right? What about your Mom girl? She'll be lonely :)
Hey if my holiday homecoming pushes through, feel free to swing by our place if you want to; afterall, we're practically neighbors ! You can ride a jeep hahahahhahahahaha! Have you ridden any jeepneys during your last visit? I doubt if you did. Even my sister rarely rides jeepneys now. She prefers the ACed FX. I on the otherhand, still rode jeepneys when I visited last year.....crazy as ever! hehehehehe But I also have to get used to crossing the streets Pinoy style again. My friend has to walk me everytime I cross a busy street during the first week or two...kinda strange coming from someone who got cited for jay walking at EDSA a few years back hehehehehe...and there I was, too scared to cross a narrowed-down part of Ortigas hi-way! Such a shame! But I got over it pretty quick. I've ressurected the jologs in me - actually I still am what am I talking about? hehehehe
take care neighbor!

The newest place that everybody was waiting to open before I left was Greenbelt. They renovted it and was hoping to bring in the Malate crowd. Maganda naman daw. Maganda rin sa Rockwell. Pero Malate pa rin!
I miss....Hap Chan ang North Park!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Delizhuz!!!! There's nothing like it here.
Grabe, Goofy, ha? That really hit me! It sounded soooo lonely. I still dream of my mom, dad, brothers, sisters and friends. Every single night!

haaaaaaaay very much....
can you just imagine the frustration...
half of your life have been spent there in your homeland...all is served...friends on your side, caring family, career to start, then all of a sudden......it went boom within a wink of an eye...i'm here with family though & realtives...i miss my friends bad!
went there last march, same old country that i left a yr ago...kinda bad status but still its my home that's where my heart & soul is...up to know...miss my friends...miss the girl that i used to date...miss my cousins..miss my dog..my room...
yeah when i went there, they said the fort isnt the in thing there kaya hang out ulit kamisa usual...street parties sa malate...
but its fun here too...simple life yet you can afford to buy things that you want in just an arms length... friends of diff ethnicities... greener pasture (well its turning brown a little bit :) )

Hello everybody! Please allow me to join all your reminiscing!
Be already glad that all of you are in the States! You can still find a hint of home with food, the Filipino population around and at least the language still!
I have been here in Paris for just over a year now and I am still in my denial stage. Feeling ko I am just on holidays pa rin! Here, there is not a single hint of my 27 years in the Philippines kaya imagine the struggle! What's worse is the language handicap. I have been going to school to learn French forever!
What I miss most in the Philippines is the warmth of the people. Those shiny happy people kahit mahirap buhay. I miss the terrific beaches and damn, the weather! But, it's true we cannot compare, as well as to say it is better in one place than another. No place is better or worse, they are all just different.
Happy to come across this thread. It made me smile!
Thanks everybody!

- mga nagkalat na taong naga-text
- flexible-minded people
- service crew at sales personnel na talagang friendly
- malls na nandoon na ang lahat
- malls na open till 9pm even on Sundays and holidays
- ER ng hospitals that can serve you in less than an hour

Dallas Girl, siguro kaya ka bored dyan eh konti sigurong pinoy sa dallas, texas? I live here in San Francisco, CA, and in here eh para kang nasa pinas. Daming noypi dito. Well, you'll get to that.
I've been here for 6 yrs now in the states, and adjusting is really difficult at times. Pero oks lang yan. Pasyal-pasyal ka para di ka ma-bored. Or best is relocate ka dito sa CA. hehehe...just kidding.
Take care.

Some Filipinos are happy to scrutinize other kababayan... pero kung tutuusin they are acting the same thing. kakainis lang kasi nakarating lang sa ibang lugar medyo lumaki na ang mga ulo or yumabang na. Sana all the Filipino all over the world will be a good example.... be humble... try not to look for the weaknesses of other kababayan instead be a good example. Tama ba ako... well i guess some of you will agree with me.

Yeah I know. It's a shame that many Filipinos tend to get this certain attitude once na nakarating na sila sa ibang bansa. Pero mind you, maraming Pilipino din sa Pinas na mga relatives nasa ibang bansa, yumayabang din like they have all the money in the world.

I agree with you.... sad to know that some of our kababayan are like that.... kung alam lang nila how hard to earn money here. siguro they will change their attitude. Anyway there are are some Filipinos na really mahangin but i still have lots of Filipino friends here na mababait rin naman.

yeah... i do... a lot... am almost a year here in Japan now... sometimes, i hang out in the Philippines restaurant near here, just to enjoy the sounds, the taped tv programs back home, the cooking...
(short vacation nga lang... 3 weeks is all i get... tapos, balik na naman dito for another year... then another... *sigh*)

To send SMS to Pinas:
Just send it the normal way. The phone number should be in a format like +63917xxxxxxx. There should be the + in the front, the country code, then the rest. They usually receive it in seconds or minutes unless walang traffic.
To receive SMS from Pinas: (if they have a normal SIM card).
This has to be done via email. A voicestream customer has this email format number@voicestream.net
The number is the 10 digit number with area code and tel. number
So from the globe cell phone when you write a message, type the email address space then the message. Then send it to 2300.
I know for sure this works. I've been using this. Receiving normal SMS from pinas doesn't seem to work.
And sending emails from globe is 2 pesos for each message whether or not the email was received. This actually works better because if globe customers send an international text, it will cost them 10 pesos. Mas mura pa di ba?
Hope this helps.
Uy try this. This is what I've been doing for about a year.

mayumi hindi naman masyado halata...
i just noticed your last word, nauwi...kasi dito sa amin in bulacan we usually use umuuwi instead of nauwi...well i have many classmates in UP na taga southern tagalog region din and used the same words llike you. minsan nga eh nahahawa na ko and that's good kasi i become more diverse...
nice name...mayumi...sounds so pinoy.

just one question
what if i graduate with a degree in Organizational Communication in UP and decided to go to the US to look for a job...what are my chances of getting a job related to my course?will it be hard?
organizational communication is pretty much like masscom...the only difference is that Orcom is more corporate affairs oriented.

Well each Filipino has their reasons why they gave up their allegiance to the Philippines and shifted that to the U.S., Canada, Australia etc. and I respect that.
Sa akin lang, being created a Filipino is a gift from God and I think hindi naman niya ako pababayaan dahil sa Pinas niya ako nilagay.
I won't give up my citizenship dahil I feel na nire-reject ko ang gift na ito galing sa Diyos. I'll do the best that I can do in the Philippines and be a success where I am. I think iyon ang gusto niya.
This is my opinion lang naman. Sorry off-topic. Now back to the topic. ;)

I can't totally relate, kse mga 3 weeks lang max ko everytime I stay, but even then 2 weeks pa lang when I'm done buying stuff (and my cash supply is depleting) I suddenly wanna go back.
Funny cuz everytime I take my vacation the first day I always tell whoever i'm vacationing with that i wanna stay for longer than 3 weeks, tapos ayun, gusto na umuwi, miss na mga dogs sa bahay, friends, my room!
Anyway, I am gonna go on vacation on Feb uli... and will try my luck there and see if I can migrate. I'm wary now after reading your posts, it seems that I should stop taking advantage everything that is Filipino.
