Hey everyone! :) Any of you still studying?
Oh btw, I'm from Corpus Christi. I moved here 2 months ago from New York City. I have had so many people coming up to me and asking why the hell did I move from the city to the country. Im asking myself the very same question *lopsided smile* Anyway, it's really not THAT bad living here; it's so laid back and way cleaner than NYC. But my heart belongs to the big city though *sigh*
Has any of you attended GoodPhil? It's an annual gathering of Filipino college kids in Texas. It'll be cool to see some of you there next year :)

If you cannot join, please kindly refer the site to your relatives and/or friends who might be interested to join, you can do that through the Refer-A-Friend located at the top portion of the page. People who can join are only those who have US mailing address and I don't know many people here yet... that's why I need your help. Hello Texan Pinoys! You guys and girls out there don't have a thread so I started one for ya'll.
I'm from Glendale, Cali, 24 female, ready to leave this boring sleepy city behind and about to graduate from college in a year and thinkin' of relocating to a livable city with a much lower cost of living than LA and an abundance of stable jobs. I got Chicago info from some helpful pexers here already but I think it's the same COL in Chicago as is here in LA....so...kaya...
I would LOVE to hear more about TEXAS, in particular, the Houston area. Kahit anong texas town ka pls share some info.
-What parts of Houston are there many Asians/Pinoys? Pinoy groceries/restos?
-In apartments.com there is this info about Houston and the vicinity and can you tell me where it's safe for a single female like me to live and find an AFFORDABLE apartment, close to groceries and malls, etc., and can you give me some 411 on these areas and what they're like:
Inner Loop
Northeast
Northwest
South/Southwest
Southeast
West/Southwest
http://apartments.com/maps/RG0006.gif
-Is Texas similar to Cali in terms of transportation...would I need a CAR? Is there freeway gridlock during rush hour traffic times? Road Rage?
-How's the racial demographic? Are street gangs a problem? Discrimination towards Asians rampant?
-Are there a good supply of jobs? I'm not in the healthcare field(Office/Marketing/Business) is my edu background and thinkin' of getting a teaching credential, as well.
-Is there a CFC Singles For Christ catholic christian chapter there?
-What is the major airport there?
-Has anyone driven from LA to Texas before?
-How's the weather in TEXAS? Is it dry, aarid weather? How's your 4 Seasons?
-How's the cost of groceries?
-How's the real estate/aparments market? Median range of really ugly crampy old houses here in LA/Orange Cty. are around $300,000.
-How are the people in Texas? Perky or Jaded City Folk?
-What's to do there? Beach, amusement parks, nature/national parks, etc?
-How far is Plano, TX from Houston? Kasi that's where many company headquarters are based and I'm interested in getting a job with these guys. Penny's and Frito Lay are in Plano if I'm not mistaken.
I dunno...what else. Uhhm. Just any other helpful info would be greatly appreciated.
By the way I've been doing research and for this year's Employment Review magazine and CNN Money's Best, they rank either Houston or Chicago as the most livable cities in the nation...that's why ang kulit kulit ko magtanong about these cities.
Thanks for putting up with me.
Thanks! Thanks!

Shempre naman! Voicestream allows sending and receiving SMS in the Philippines. Kaya lang, they'll charge ya for $.10 per message. If you want, you can subsrcribe to their Ping-pong 500 which costs $2.99 for 500 incoming and outgoing messages. You know why? Because Voicestream uses GSM - Global Service For Mobile Phones which is also used the Philippines. :kittycat:

But when she told her mother, "Ma, pinoy din sila". The mother told her, "I don't know."

haha, i guess thats true, some look hispanic kase... sometimes i'd look at people who i think are pinoy, and then they open their mouths and a torrent of spanish words come out.
bu then again, some of the people i think are pinoy, i smile at them and they just stare at me. actually,i take it back, i have run into some pinoys here. a mom and a kid and the kid was talking in tagalog and i was actually about to go up to the kid and say hi (im so desperate to see other filipinos hahahahhaa) but the mom was like "dont speak in tagalog, its not nice!"
tsk,tsk.. oh well... to each his own i guess. i happen to be proud of my heritage

^ I graduated from SWT..... it's a nice quiet place to live. Just 30 minutes from Austin and 45 minutes from SA. What are you guys doing in San Marcos anyway? I left there 2 years ago. I went to Austin then to Dallas and then I'm now here in Manila.
the brain - I went to Palayok years ago. It was decent pero masikip sa loob. All you can eat pero not buffet style. The food was ok. I heard there's another pinoy restaurant in Arlington but I don't know if they're still in business.

I'm back in the philippines already ....... more than 2 years na ang nakalipas ...... by the way, it's fun reading your post about the malls that you have visited ....... grapevine mills is indeed huge, galleria on the otherhand is quite pricey, but the other mall that we really like to visit is stonebriar in Frisco, if you are in 635, you have to go north at Preston Road, it's quite a long drive though :D

pareho tayo. proud din ako sabihin o humarap kahit kanino as pinoy.

Nice to know that you both are proud of your lineage ...... Btw, there are a lot of Filipinos in Garland and Plano area, I can assure you that they are very nice, mga kasama ko kasi sila sa work  ........ Some of the filipinos, who like me had their training there are living within the Richardson area ......
I would just like to share with you our experince when we were ther ebefore ..... When ever we go to the grocery or the Chinese market, most of the Filipinos that we met were very happy to see us, they're the ones who introduce themselves actually ...... They are actually glad to see Kababayans hanging around, they must have missed our country as well as speaking Tagalog :)

we changed plan.we went to valleyview instead.pero this coming easter sunday,sa galleria na kami mag-malling.ako naman,jan.19 dumating.nice to know na may kasama ako dito.i'm here in dallas, texas.until now,di pa ako nakakapasyal sa filipino resto o kaya sa chinese market. i would love to kaya lang di ko pa alam at gamay ang place.
i went to church kanina sa our lady of guadalupe at may nakita kaming mga pinoy at nag-tagalog pa.nginitian namin pero na-deadma kami as in parang walang nakita.grabe sa pagkamahadero at mahadera.
it's true.indians have this closer union than filipinos.in addition, they are friendlier to co-asians like filipinos.nasasabi ko nga,mas mababait pa sila kaysa kapwa pinoy.

A few downed power lines, blinking streetlights, razed billboards...other than that, everything's intact. It's as if nothing happened. I dont know how to start a conversation.

Guys i need your help....
My friend gave me a call kanina lang. Gusto niya makausap yung asawa ng tita who's ANDRE F. KING address 8908 Park LN #167 Dallas, Texas 75231.
Or kung kakilala nio, just give to us the number so that they can call Andre. Worried kasi yung family.....

hey guys... share ko lang... you know how when you're in texas, people easily mistake us for mexicans kasi we're brown (well... except for those who look chinese or mestizo... me... i'm utterly brown...)... anyway, it was funny kse ever since i got here i've been mistaken for mexican, hawaiian, pacific islander and the latest was... irish... ha ha! it was actually a hispanic client of mine... sabi niya, "excuse me, are you irish?" i wanted to laugh pero siyempre hindi... every time i tell my friends here (puro puti... haaay... ala bang pinoy dyan from abilene!?! represent naman peepz! hahaha!) tawa sila ng tawa... personally i didn't think it was that funny pero they think it's sooo hilarious... eh kung pedyakin ko kaya sila isa-isa? haaaay... sorry po... pa-vent lang... medyo nawiwindang narin ako kasi christmas na... first time away from the family... alam mo na... :bop: :mecry: :bop:

hey guys, may nakita na kong simbang gabi pero gabi talaga as in 7:30 pm.
but this is truly a Filipino simbang gabi. the priest is filipino and the mass is taglish. the best thing is most of the songs are in Filipino. so talagang masaya at mararamdaman mo talaga.
one is in St. Mark Church sa may 1201 Alma Dr. Plano, Texas and the other one is in St. Pius in 3030 Gus Thomasson Rd Dallas Texas. Both masses start at 7:30 pm from Dec 15 to Dec 22.
The last simbang gabi mass will be a concelebrated mass combining attendees of both churches to be held in St. Augustine Church 1054 N. St. Augustine Dr Dallas, Tx 75217

This is an appeal on behalf of my cousin Christine Pechera, a young Filipina-American woman who is dying from non-hodgkins lymphoma and is desperately seeking a bone marrow donor.
Her best chance for a match is someone who is full or part Filipino. Sadly, there are simply not enough Filipinos (all minorities, for that matter) registered with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP). Can you please go to www.savechristine.com (http://www.savechristine.com)and see if you can help ? Make sure you check out her video.
Please let your Filipino friends and family know. Free self-test kits are available to Filipinos who are U.S. citizens. No blood is involved; you simply swab the inside of your cheek and mail back the kit.
She doesn't have much time left... :depressed:
Thank you and please say a prayer for Christine.
Please ask your Filipino friends and family if they can help, too.

We had a great time in our Christmas Eve celebration. We started at around 3 pm and had our last round of Karaoke singing at 3 am. WOW!
Went to mass at 12 pm on the 25th. Tuwang tuwa yung mga kids. Kahit malayo tayo sa Pinas, we make the Filipino way of celebrating Christmas happen here.
Next stop would be in Houston, Texas for the New Year's Eve celebration.

Maraming noypi sa Austin Texas. In fact, meron sila dyan basketball team na from time to time e dumadayo dito sa Dallas to join tournaments. The climate there I guess is pretty much similar to Dallas. Sa Houston lang naman medyo warmer eh. Usually temperature there is 4 or 5 degrees higher than in Dallas.

Hey pipol, we're back from Houston. Touchdown in Dallas was 2:00 am Jan 2. Moody Gardens is nice although medyo expensive yung kanilang package. Better ***** kung it was bundled with Schlitterbahn. We also went and dine at boardwalk and we spent some time playing with the water sa Galveston sea wall.
Our last stop was at NASA. This time, Saturn V was available for viewing unlike last year. We didn't get to it at Gold Ribbon cause they were closed that New year's day. Sayang yung $6.99 na buffet. But anyway, mission accomplished. We had a great time with our friends plus with some other new friends.

Jerome, if you're still looking for info about Austin, I'm gonna chime in :D
I actually live north of Austin, maganda dito -- I like Central Texas, it's a tad cooler than Houston (where I lived previously), and nag-snow pa nga last Feb. Year-round, the weather is not bad. Summers are typically in the 90s, winter can dip into the negatives (pag may coldfront lang naman), spring and fall are perfect! It's nowhere near humid as Manila, so bearable naman ang init.
The Round Rock area is nice -- it's really booming and everything's within 10-15 min drive, only downside is the bad traffic. If you're driving to Austin on 35 it's like a giant parking lot :D
And yes, madaming Pinoy dito... unfortunately, I've yet to find a decent Pinoy or even Asian store...
HTH!
may alam ba kayong nearest outlet store sa arlington/dallas? we'll be there this june 10- aug5
Yeah, Grapevine Mills lang ang malapit-lapit. There's a cruddy one in Hillsboro, south of Dallas. If you want good outlet shopping go to San Marcos :D

Thanks, baka next year na lang kami mag-move. hopefully mabenta kagad tong bahay namin. because it's a buyers' market, medyo mahihirapan kami but it's ok, we'll see if austin would be the one for us. this christmas, travel kame sa austin. we'll find out what you texans have :)
we went to raleigh, nc last april and 2 thumbs up sa min yung city. raleigh-durham-chapel hill bale yung area. it's maybe similar to austin considering that both are college towns. unc, duke and ncsu being the schools.
pros ng north carolina; lots and lots of trees, very hilly, very green, maraming outdoor malls, and less humid than other cities in the south. cons naman is parang too laidback and malayo masyado sa pinaka big city ng nc which is charlotte, tapos 2-1/2 hours from the beach. a little far for us.
we're not expecting anything from austin, dahil sabi nila texas is very flat and not much trees. so we'll just wait and see on christmas. thanks again...

^Well kelangan mo muna dumaan ng Agency sa Pinas na tutulong magprocess ng working papers mo sa US. Ano ba ang natapos mo?
Industrial Engineering and natapos ko. me background ako sa Production Planning & Material Control, currently working ako as Buyer / Materials Planner .

Medyo maliit ang chance mo for US kasi IE ka unlike mga RN sten at PT na in demand dito sa US. Ang chance mo makapagwork dito eh mag-asawa ka ng US Citizen tapos kapag nasa US ka na pwede ka magapply sa mga company dito.

I will be in Austin, Texas from the 28th of October until the 15th of November then from the 28th of November until the 9th of December. I believe that Dallas is roughly 3 hours away by bus from Austin.
