i think we have an old NYC thread from last year :)
well as for me...i went to college here in the states and i just graduated last may..i've been here for 4 years..give or take..but before graduating, i used to go home every 4 months or so..i used to spend 4 months out of a year in Manila...now that was the life... I MISS IT!!!! :(

well New York is becoming pseudo-Manila because of a sudden exodus of manila kids. Lotsa..as in A LOT of manila kids are here now either looking for work or studying. Sometimes when i go out, it feels like i'm in Il Ponticello!! :lol: NYC has sooooooo much to offer. i'd suggest exploring the city and what it can offer. It's the best city in the world :p (ok ok, for the homesick Manilan like me, a near second ;) )

Need some advice New Yawker dude and dudettes!

My ma and I will be touching down at Islip airport in Long Island sometime around September.

I'm so excited. Gawsh...I'm finally going to be traveling to the other coast. And I hardly get to travel so this is a biggie event.

We'll be staying in Dix Hills Long Island but are going to be toured by our relatives there I'm sure.

I just wanted to know ahead of time what places in New York are worth visiting in our 3 days over there?

Subway numbers and streets are welcome. What spots? What malls? What areas?

Is there a Jollibee and Goldilocks there? I wonder if our relatives would like us to bring them some of these goodies but if there are these establishments over there already then forget it.

Are there things New Yorkers can't find there that we have here on the West Coast that you guys and gals know of? I highly doubt it though.

amber-if you're a finance grad, NYC is the place to be. It's the world's financial center..from wall street to midtown, all the companies focus on finance. The city is great especially on a social level and there's a lot of very decent filipinos who are both US educated and PInas educated. I highly recommend it. BUT right now may not be the right time, the US is in an economic slowdown. The finance field is also very, very, very competitive. I'm a financial analyst in a top firm and i went through a lot of challenges and obstacles even if i am US educated(i went to college here in the US). Finance is a man's world and they're very keen about how motivated and driven you are. I would like to suggest that you should take your MBA here for the mean time to get a good grip of the market and the way recruiting goes. A lot of my friends who went to college in pinas but took their MBA here had an easier time looking for jobs in finance. You should also have a good GPA(grade point average) and a stellar resume to get prime jobs on the Street(wall street). I cannot stress competitiveness even more. It's very very very competitive especially now that a lot of people are closing up shop and all these brilliant young minds are competing for fewer jobs. Another thing is, recruitment process in finance jobs especially with top firms are very long and arduous. One position in Ibanking for example, takes 4 rounds of interviews and the last round is usually the whole day with at least 6 different people interviewing you. I've been through it and it's not a pretty process. What field in finance do you want to get into? Ibanking? trading? Consulting? Accounting?

As for apartment situations, it's pretty hard to get a good apartment in Manhattan if you're just starting out. Well, iba na ang usapan if your parents pay for the apartment but if you're the one who's paying for everything. It's EXTREMELY out of your mind expensive.

But i really can't complain about it right now, if you make it here, you can make it everywhere. :)

thanks trinity! :) NY, being the financial center of the world. is one of the reasons why i wanna try living there but with that kind of cutthroat competition...hmmm, now i'm more determined to take my MBA there! i haven't decided yet what field of finance though. but i'm leaning towards consulting, investment banking..

well as for in demand, Ibanking seems down and out....there are only but a few M&As and IPOs. Consulting seems like a good bet. I would suggest you find your interest first before going head on.... during interviews they are very specific and you would have to expound on why you made your choices so you really have to be passionate about what you picked. There are numerous of sites on the internet that would help you decide. If you want Ibanking(which i dont really recommend unless you're a workaholic nutcase), try www.vault.com, the site offers lot of stuff about Ibanking and the recruitment process that comes with it. And try to get prime Internships in reputable firms, if you're still an undergrad. i would recomment at least 2 solid internships so you have your hands dirty on how the Finance world works. Also start reading the Wall Street Journal and try watching CNBC so you get used to the lingo.

as for clothes tax, actually...i think if the clothes are less than 120 dollars, it doesnt get taxed. above that, you get 8.25%.

Some airlines like PAL object to CD players claiming it can interfere with their cockpit systems, so just in case, bring some cassette tapes an a walkman with you. Do you have a laptop? Bring it! Airlines like PAL allow use of laptops after take-off and before landing, which makes me wonder why PAL prohibits use of CD players.

Airlines like PAL allow use of laptops after take-off and before landing, which makes me wonder why PAL prohibits use of CD players.

actually nagbabago na nga ang kulay ng bull. especially dun sa part na madaming humihimas. i think nagiging green na yata. that bull is one of the favorite spot ng mga tourists to have their pictures taken. i heard that it was built right after the market crash of 87 to siginify bull market.

mahirap mag organize ng EB lalo na kung busy lahat. i work from monday to friday and i'm not really a set 9-to-5er(i actually get to work early and go home sorta late just as long as i get done with my projects) so my only free time is the weekends which i spend either sleeping, shopping or going out :p i'd suggest somewhere downtown...tourist-y if you want or edgy or trendy..it's all up to the vibe you want. i don't know what your budgets are or something..i can suggest a number of places where i usually go and hang out. or if you want, we can do it in some decent Filipino place. I highly recommend Cendrillon(the only Filipino restaurant in Zagat's) in SoHo but they serve Filipino fusion not neccessarily traditional pinoy cuisine. it's a great area..i love hanging out there...in fact, a lot of hollywood people and models eat at Cendrillon(i've personally seen Willem Defoe, Brook Shields, Kristy Hume, Caroline Ribeiro). Or we can go really gung-ho and we can go eat at Elvie's, it's a turo-turo on Avenue A and 14th

but guys, you're in new york already. you can't just go to places that don't say anything about how great the city is. the beauty of NYC is that there are so many places here that are fun, cultural and yet does not neccessarily mean expensive. i hope you guys are adventurous enough in exploring what this city can offer because fact is, there are so many things better than just what a mall can offer. in the first place, who ever goes mall-shopping in manhattan is just nuts and lacks creativity. that's my opinion. if you tell me what you guys exactly want, i can give a lot of suggestions. and don't think that just because i like shopping in saks or barneys all i like are chi-chi places. so not true. i like places that are worth both my time and money. let your stay in NYC not be just another way of being homesick. there's really a plentitude and a plethora of wonderful and amazing things this city can offer.
