ever prestigious bmcc? lol
this is my 2nd semester @ bmcc. so far, i like here better than hunter (w/c totally sucked!). hehe... i'm taking nursing too but i didn't apply for the program yet. sabi ng classmate ko, i need to finish at least 1 bio to get in so this sem i'm only taking anatomy 1. ok naman. i mean, ok naman prof. ko. :) yung isang classmate ko nga from last sem, he came from hunter too so medyo nagchikahan kami. he was telling me that bmcc's lab. courses are wayyy better than hunter's. kasi daw he have this lab at hunter tapos mga 2 or 3 students ang nagsha-share sa 1 microscope. :rolleyes: ano kaya yun? lol.
choice of school also depends on where you'll be coming from. tapos how long you're willing to travel. ako kasi i work here in midtown so medyo accesible yung bmcc for me. kung sa queensborough kasi, medyo malayo. tapos nde naman sya malapit sa subway so you really gotta take the bus. :)
yun lang po.
anyhoo... happy valentines everyone! :)

...nyc_finezt..bmcc ka pala no! sori! sana hindi ka na-offend :D ...nursing ka pala, cool!...in fairness, i think that the bmcc campus is more modern than hunter's naman kaya i think u have a point there..i mean importante talaga lab for clinical subjects...tapos located pa sya sa tribeca kaya ok! :)

The International Filipino Association of NYU's Annual Pass the Mic Night (formerly known as Pinoy Pop Night) will be going down March 6th!!
A night of passionate crooning, ridiculous serenading, and godlike vocalizing, Pass the Mic has been described as "a mind-blowing assault on the auditory senses" by one imaginary audience member. In the tradition of IFA programming, Pass The Mic seeks to unite all in an evening of talent-filled fun for performers and spectators alike.
This year, Pass the Mic will be held on March 6th at New York University's Kimmel Center.
If you would like to participate in this display of vocal ecstasy, here's your chance.
We are looking for performers to sing, play an instrument, perform spoken word, or read poetry.
Contact Dom Francisco (def215@stern.nyu.edu) to sign up. Don't be shy!! Everybody's a winner at Pass the Mic!! Plus there'll be a dope afterparty too.

Hey NY pinoys!
I want to study in NY. Any schools you can recommend? I'm considering two types of schools:
1. good (high standards) but expensive
2. not so good (not so high standards) but inexpensive
Considering the money I have now is all in peso, I'm leaning towards the second type... any suggestions on what school I should apply to?
Thanks, pips. :)

What kind of field are you planning to study? What type of degree do you want to earn - professional (MBA, LAW, MPA), academic/research (MS/MA, Phd), bachelors' (BS/AB) or certification?

Some of the higher-ranked b-schools in the NY metro area are Columbia, NYU and Yale (1.5 hrs away in New Haven, CT). Costs are on the higher-tier but career prospects after graduation (salaries, inustry, etc.) are excellent espescially if you have US work authorization (green card). Caliber of faculty and student community is also among the best in the world. Loans at friendly terms are available to all students.
CUNY-Baruch (NYC) and Rutgers (NJ) are state universities w/ MBA programs that can cost significantly less than the ones mentioned above espescially if you can get state resident tuition for NY or NJ respectively. Career prospects and caliber of faculty/students may not be at the same level as Yale, Columbia et al.
NYU and Fordham have part-time programs in Manhattan where you can study while working, making your MBA more affordable.
If you are in a more senior management position, you can qualify for an executive MBA program (EMBA) offered in Columbia and NYU where they have classes on weekends only.
What's your current immigration status? Can you work while studying? How long have you been working? Are you looking to change industries?

Columbia University will be hosting its annual Filipino cultural festival entitled - "Barrio" on May 1. Those who attended last year's event had a fun-filled evening of music, dance, comedy and Filipino food. This year's event promises to be bigger with greater variety in the performances. Details are as follows:
DATE: May 1, 2003
TIME: 7:00 PM
VENUE: Roone Arledge Auditorium, Alfred Lerner Hall (near 15th & Broadway)
DIRECTIONS: Subway - take #1 or #9 and get off at 116th St. (Columbia University) station.
I don't have the ticket prices as of the moment, but based on last year's show, it should be approx. $10 each.

Rabbaddal--are you a Westchester, NY resident? If you are, would you be able to recommend an apartment where a friend of mine can stay in around that area? She's a pediatrician who's about to start working in St. Barnabas Hospital in June, and she's having a difficult time looking for a studio apartment that's decently priced (i.e., below $800) and within 20 minutes away--Yonkers and Bronx area would also be okay. The most decent one we found was in Ossining, but that's 45 mins. away. Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean by "internship", but she will work as a doctor permanently there--she's already a full-fledged pediatrician, not just a medical student. She carries an H-1 visa, so she can't avail of any student housing programs or dormitories. Her salary is large enough for her to get a small place of her own, but the places she liked cost over $1000/mo without utilities, and she's not willing to spend that much for a place that she won't be staying in most of the time anyway.

I work in Scarsdale in Westchester county. It might be a bit pricey for her to rent over there if her budget is $800. I'll ask a friend of mine who's living in Bronxville if there are any decently-priced apartments in her neighborhood. She also knows some Fordham Pinoys renting off-campus in the Bronx so she might be able to get some feedback (last I heard, 2 bedroom high ceiling in the Bronx costs $1,200 w/c divided by 2 would amount to $600 - need to double check). Does your friend have a car or will she have to take the subway/Metro North?
Ira
Apr 23, 2004, 01:48 PM
Okay, thanks a lot! Bronx would be fine--it actually doesn't matter where, as long as it's near the hospital. She has a car, but having the subway just a block or two away would be very convenient as well.

According to my friend in Bronxville, some 1-bedroom apartments can rent for as low as $900, which is very cheap by Bronxville standards (upscale community, access to Metro North, beautiful town center w/ lots of shops, near Sarah Lawrence etc.). Your friend can search for available appartments there through the ff. website: www.thejournalnews.com
There are also areas near Fordham in the Bronx that rent out two bedroom, one bath, large living room and kitchen for $1,100 for the whole place or $550 if shared w/ another person. I'll let you know if I hear of any available units in the Bronx.

im doing interactive telecommunications at NYU. it's important that before you look at what schools and courses there are, you first have to decide what you want. gradschool, especially sa NY is SOOOO expensive, it's crazy. it took me 3 years to decide exactly what i want, and im glad i thought about it well and hard. it was the best decision for graduate school i ever made.
but that still doesn't mean it's any less expensive. still, at least im really getting my money's worth

I applied to the MS Financial Engineering program at Columbia. I have yet to here from them though. I got an email saying that they were going to recommend me for admission but I still don't know what my chances are.
I want to work in Wall Street eventually so I'm really interested in living in New York. Also planning to get my MBA but I guess that's still about 3-4 years from now.

Just curious, how much would you expect to spend in New York for a decent meal? How about housing? Aside from food and rent, what are the other major expenses in living there?
Saikee
Apr 25, 2004, 05:23 PM
hi krystle.
on the average, a typical meal would cost around $7. If you calculate... thats over P350. That's why you don't calculate when you're here. It will kill you :)
housing naman, it really depends on where you live. im not sure how much places in other burroughs (queens, brooklyn, etc) cost. but you can get a enough decent place for around $900 a month. if you're a student, i suggest you apply to International House
www.ihouse-nyc.org
you can pay as low as $700, plus u have free gym, wireless internet, an in-house pub and cafeteria, and a community of international students you can interact with. the rooms are pathetically small, but people shouldn't really "live" in their rooms in NY diba? so ayos na rin siya.

Columbia has an excellent FE program. If they said that they'd recommend you for admission, then your chances are probably good. BTW, what particualr area of Wall ST. (ex. i-banking, quant analysis/derivatives, i-management, equity research, etc.) would you want to work in after your MSFE?

I'm interested in working in i-banking, maybe in corp fin or M&A. I tried applying for analyst positions already but I have been rejected everywhere so I figured that I probably need further studies. I just graduated from Ateneo last March (BS ME) and I'm taking an extra summer class now (AB Eco-H).

Thanks. I was an ME grad myself. The reason I asked was because it's generally difficult to enter an i-banking analyst program in the US if you're not a US citizen or a green card holder. Not exactly impossible, but extremely difficult these days since 2000. Associate i-banking programs are more open to work visa sponsorships but these tend to be open only to MBA grads and usually to those who were former analysts or into related fields themselves before b-school. The Wall ST. area where foreign masters students in the US are typically recruited as analysts these days - for which banks are still willing to sponsor - is quantitative analysis in options and derivatives, which incidentally is the focus area of financial engineering. Quantitative analysts come from science and engineering programs such as physics, math, mechanical engineering and FE to name a few. If you get good grades in your FE program, then you have a pretty decent chance of landing a quant analyst position in Wall St. after you graduate. The people at Columbia's FE dept. know options and derivatives career opptys very well bec. many of their grads get placed in these positions. It might also be a good stepping stone into an associate i-banking position after you get an MBA in the future.
But if you're still intent on working as an i-banking analyst, you might either want to consider working in Asia, networking heavily and/or leveraging on connections.

Well, actually, I am a green card holder so the work visa would not be a problem. Although I'm kinda leaning towards i-banking, I'm not sure yet if I can take the long hours. I like the idea of meeting clients, traveling a lot, and working on deals though.
I already tried applying to analyst positions in Asia via the online applications of the major banks. As for networking, how would you recommend I go about it? I don't really have relatives or close friends who are into i-banking. How do you ask people for job prospects without seeming like a "user" type?

In that case (having a green card), your career options with an MS FE from Columbia expand many-fold! Getting into an i-banking analyst program is still very competitive even for those w/ US work authorization, but at least the odds for you are a lot better than for those who have the skills and the degree but w/o authorization.
If you insist on i-banking, you can enter an analyst program of a large bank - BOFA, for one, is hiring analysts agressively for both the NY and SFO offices - or work for a small boutique bank. Some boutiques hire analysts and pay them a pittance (or none at all) despite making them work long hours, but are good stepping stones into large i-banks as lateral hires (i.e. 2nd-year analyst) since they can provide referrals and recommendations. Or if you stick w/ them long enough, they can even write strong b-school recommendations for you when you decide to pursue your MBA. Other options available to you are other Wall St. services such as options & derivatives, equity research and trading. You might also be interested in consulting since having a green card means you can apply to smaller firms besides the McKinseys and Bains.
You are right about i-banking's long hours. You mentioned before that you interned in CSFB so I guess you know what the environment is like. As an analyst, you won't be able to really travel a lot and meet with big name clients like Donald Trump. That's something assigned for senior associates and VPs. Understand, however, that the analyst program provides the best way to enter higher-level i-banking and be a VP or MD someday. Besides giving yourself an advantage in background, the experience will help you understand just how the industry works and how you can work yourself up the ladder. If you can get your foot in the door sooner, then don't wait until you finish your MBA.
As for career prospecting, Columbia's career services can provide you w/ the best advice and strategy on how to approach i-banks both formally (recruitment process) or informally (ex. cold call/networking). Besides having an extensive Wall St. alumni database, Columbia hosts a lot of i-banking career events such as cocktails and panel discussions. A typical modus operandi would be to get a list of alumni contacts and call them to "ask for career advice on how to enter the industry", of course they really know you're looking for a job referral but at least you're not being too direct.
As for me, I'm currently working as an analyst for a small boutique i-bank doing mainly M&A but I may have to transfer into IT marketing soon for the work visa sponsorship since I don't have a green card. I'm currently using my 1-year student work permit. Still on the lookout for an associate position in i-banking anywhere in the world.

Thanks, I will try applying to BofA this year. I actually already applied to some boutique banks last year and I got an email from HLHZ that they would be interested to interview me. As I was in the Philippines though, they just told me to submit my resume again if I am in the U.S. already. I guess they didn't want phone interviews.
My short term goal right now is to get a good job that will give me a good international experience and pays relatively well. I'm still not sure exactly what Wall Street or even consulting job I want. Although I read about the different roles, for me it's still hard to imagine if I would actually like the job once I'm already there. I figured I'll just try the "right" jobs like i-banking and consulting. I also like the idea of handling different types of companies all the time I guess.
As for the long hours, when I interned at CSFB I didn't really experience it because it was just a 9-6 job for me. They didn't really make me do the real analyst work. So I still don't know if I'm cut out for it.I'm also kinda worried about my financial and computer skills. Even if we took up VBA, I still cannot really do it. So even if I do get accepted at Columbia, I'm kinda worried that I will fail or get really low grades. The prerequisites are mostly pure engineering stuff like differential equations or programming with C++. Since ME isn't reall a real engineering program, I am not really familiar with them. Did you have a hard time understanding the technical math or programming part of finance when you got your MBA?
Good luck with your career. I'm sure you'll do well since you already have an MBA from a great school. :) That is also my goal after a few years. Btw, may I know what type of job you had before your MBA? Also, are you planning or do you have a CFA? I want to study for it but with the Columbia decision still pending, I still don't know when I should enroll and start studying for it.

Don't worry about not yet being directly exposed to i-banking or not knowing VBA. I-banks hire people from different backgrounds/majors such as philosophy, psychology, political science and engineering for their analyst programs. They usually like people who are intelligent, can handle the workload and ambitious. They also provide training in technical skills because for them, skills in these areas are not what make good i-bankers. Besides, not all engineering programs teach VBA and C++ programming in-depth. This is something that you can learn only through practice. To make it a little easier, you might want to take stock of the basic programming languages that you'll be using in Columbia and buy those self-tutorial kits that are sold in bookstores. In my case, most of the modeling we did in MBA was done in Excel so no programming was required. Technical math skills was not a problem either because they build on the theories that we learned in ME. The MS FE program is different from the MBA program, however, as there will be more focus on the technical side. However, it is still just anew application to the theories you learned in ME. I don't think you'll have that much trouble.

I did marketing for an IT company before going to b-school. I'm not planning to take a CFA because it's not really a value-add in i-banking, which is my focus. The CFA is more applicable in fields such as investment management or equity research where credentials are displayed in public and where professionals have to understand the relationships between finance and economic theory.
My personal view is that you can't go wrong having both a CFA and an MS FE degree - assuming you have the time to do both without making compromises to your other plans - at this point because you still haven't made up your mind on what career path to follow. At the very least, it will look good in your resume.

hi beanie,
i'd suggest getting more working experience before going into grad school. sometimes, going about your day to day life may seem trivial, but you'll learn things. also, grad school isn't cheap. if you jump into the bandwagon too early, you might be getting in something you'd suddenly realize you didn't want pala. And then that's when you can really say "you wasted your time".
two years before i went to grad school, i wsanted an MBA. and then a year later, i found out i didn't want an MBA. Kukuha sana ako ng MFA (fine arts course). but as i thought about it, i realized i didn't want a fine arts degree. that's when figured i wanted something in between an MBA and MFA. And that's when I was able to really hone in and understand my future direction.
after all, no one would want to spend around five million pesos just "guessing what they wanted". it's a major decision, a life changing one, and you really have to prepare for it. it may take years.
lastly, i'd advise you to try to answer the questions in this website:
http://www.mba.com/mba/SeeYourselfasanMBA/IstheMBARightforYou/AreYouReady/SelfAssessmentCanHelpYouDecide/Pre-MBASelf-AssessmentChecklist.htm
The questions are very simple, but if you really REALLY read them, they can be very difficult to answer. Answering that website can help guide you better.

excellent program. a few buddies of mine were in the FE (headed by emanuel derman of BDT fame) and mathematical finance (karatzas teaches there) programs. although their career planning office is independent from the other programs (i.e business school), which can be both good or bad. a lot of big firms on the street as well as hedge funds recruit from those programs for their quant desks.
have you looked at NYU-Courant as well?

You need to ask yourself 3 questions: (1) What do you expect to get out of your grad degree? (2) What background and skills/work experience do you currently have? and (3) What is your immigration status in the US?
All of these questions are inter-related. Let's say for now that your objective is career advancement and that you would want to pursue an MBA or some other business-related masters program. Even before you start your MBA, you will have to decide what field (ex. marketing, finance, etc.) in business you would want to work in, and most likely put in a few years experience in that field. For example, if you want to work in the consumer marketing field after your MBA, you may have to work for 2 - 3 years in brand management before your MBA. Most b-schools and recruiting companies now require students/applicants to demonstrate focus and knowledge of their target field to improve their hirability. This early, you may probably want to decide what you want to do and start transitioning into that industry.
Furthermore, let's assume that you want to work in the US or sine country other than the Philippines. Almost all companies require that applicants have permanent work authorization (aka. green card) in the country they are applying to. Most companies these days are not willing to sponsor work visas. And contrary to the spin of some MBA promoters - who would love to see talented applicants from around the world flock to their campuses - this is not primarily dependent on the economy (because if the economy would improve, they would argue, then so would the hiring of foreigners). Companies like P&G, for example, would have to go to great lengths to explain to immigration authorities why they should hire foreigners for a marketing position instead of a US resident. Given these difficulties, most companies do not even bother to look at resumes of foreign students. Therefore, even if the economy were to improve, foreigners would still be at a disadvantage in terms of finding post-MBA work. There are a few exceptions. Some investment banks and consulting firms hire MBA grads regardless of their immigration status. However, these positions tend to be very competitive (they get primarily those who worked in Wall St.-type/consulting industries before their MBA) and you will have to ask yourself if these are the kind of careers you would really want to pursue (ex. What if you are the marketing tye of person?). If you have a green card, on the other hand, then the chances of you finding post-MBA work in the US increase many-fold assuming that you have the necessary work experience in the field you are targeting. If you don't have a green card and you don't plan to work in investment banking or the likes, you might want to work on your immigration status first. When I was in b-school, some of my foreign-born classmates worked on getting their green cards (in one way or another) before their MBA so they would have an easier time finding work after.

thank you very much rabbaddal! first, i dont really intend to work in the u.s. after grad skul though if there will be an opportunity then i would gladly grab it... but im open to working in the philippines (together with the hope that the economy will recover) or in asia... though i graduated with a marketing degree, i would want to go into investment banking also... so do you suggest that i get some work experience first before i go to b-school? i've attended few talks in manila re: u.s. grad skuls and i've noticed that many prospective applicants are new grads so is this really a significant part?
i also think that grad skul will help me not only in terms of added education but also the experience of being in grad skul. it will allow me to meet a lot of people that will be a big advantage when i deal with other people outside b-school. is that right?
thanks again!

I checked out the International House and it seems like a fun place. Did you stay there? What were your experiences with housing, like how do single dorms and shared apartments compare? I still don't have my admissions letter though so I don't want to get worked up over housing yet. I do hope I get in though.
The CFA is more applicable in fields such as investment management or equity research where credentials are displayed in public and where professionals have to understand the relationships between finance and economic theory.
Speaking of other fields within finance, how does i-banking compare to investment management and private equity? I read many posts in forums wherein people who were into i-banking are itching to get into investment management, hedge funds, or private equity. Aside from the supposed shorter hours, are these fields really better (more prestigious, more financial gains) than i-banking?
excellent program. a few buddies of mine were in the FE (headed by emanuel derman of BDT fame) and mathematical finance (karatzas teaches there) programs. although their career planning office is independent from the other programs (i.e business school), which can be both good or bad. a lot of big firms on the street as well as hedge funds recruit from those programs for their quant desks.
Cool. I'm kinda worried about passing and doing well because I don't really have the prerequisites like programming and differential equations. Would you know if your buddies were particularly good in math and programming even before the program? Did they get good jobs right after graduation?
I applied to Princeton, NYU-Courant, USC, and Columbia. Got rejected by the first three. I'm still waiting for my letter from Columbia.

Given that your current job is very different from i-banking, it would be helpful (to land an i-banking job after you finish your MBA) if you can get a few years pre-MBA experience first in i-banking. Since the i-banking job market in the Philippines is quite small, you could try other indutries related to capital markets such as corporate banking, investment management, venture capital private equity. Even in the Philippines, i-banking firms tend to be very selective in their recruitment (if ever they do) and they will likely expect some demonstrated capability in the field.
MBA students typically have anywhere from 3 to 5 years of work experience on average, although you can find a good number of MBA students with 7 or more years under their belts. MBA programs tend to be very collaborative where learning and contributing is a 2-way street. Your ability to get the most out of an MBA will depend a lot on how much you can contribute. The more experience you have, the more you can contribute.

Yes, business education will allow you to get exposed to different people of different backgrounds, as well as knock heads with some of the best talent in the world - doctors, engineers, lawyers, entrepreneurs, etc. The experience can be very rewarding.

Columbia rents out housing units to international students at very good rates. Besides I-House, there are other places on-campus that rent out very cheaply.

I-management and private equity (PE)/venture capital (VC) involve making equity investments. I-management differs from PE/VC in the sense that it involves investing in public (listed) companies whereas PE/VC firms invest in private (non-listed) companies. Entering into I-management, PE or VC usually requires I-banking or management consulting experience first - either pre or post-MBA.
Working hours are not necessarily shorter than i-banking, contrary to the general perception. Perhaps working hours may be a little shorter, but there is a lot of pressure in i-management and PE/VC to get the maximum returns for investors. One difference is that you spend less time doing pitchbooks and powerpoint slides than i-banking and instead focus on making strategic investing decisions.
Prestige is relative and it's hard to say which field has more prestigious firms (assuming that by prestige, you mean fame). For example, i-banking has as many famous firms like Goldman or Morgan Stanley as does private equity with KKR and Blackstone. Hedge funds, on the other hand, tend to be very low-profile and tend to shy away from the limelight. Besides former i-bankers, hedge funds also recruit ex-traders and ex-quant analysts. Besides, Wall St. has a small world environment and people will judge you more for what you've done, something they will know about, rather than the name of the firm you were affiliated with. And firms tend to share info. w/ one another about the real accomplishments of their bankers. For example, a small boutique i-banker can have a more extensive deal history than a Goldman banker and may find himself/herself more hirable. Or, Lazard may be a smaller i-bank than Citigroup but their bankers are experts when it comes to M&A.

(hmm... my initial post did not upload)
anyway, i study Econ (phd) at Columbia.
i took a look at the FE curriculum. it would probably help if you have some background in real analysis, probability theory, and time series econometrics/statistics. that means, if you do have that background, great -- you have a headstart. if not, no problem. you will be taught in class, you will study them like crazy, and you will be fine. i took a continuous-time finance course sems ago and we were taught concepts like ito's lemma and solving for the pricing kernel... i think you will encounter the same stuff in stochastic processes/continuous time asset pricing.
knowing some programming language is good but, personally, i think it is the easiest to learn.
hope this helps.

UC Berkeley has an FE program under Haas but the application fee is $ 150 and work experience is recommended so I did not apply there anymore. I may be wrong, but I think the program in MIT is just an option for the MBA. There are other programs such as in U Mich Ann Arbor, Stanford, and Cornell. However, I've read some stories that graduates sometimes have difficulty finding jobs. Thus, I decided to apply to NYU and Columbia for the location. USC because I have family there so I can save on room and board. And Princeton, well, because I've always liked Princeton.
If I don't get in anywhere, I am considering going to California State Polytechnic University Pomona to get an MS in Economics with a Financial Economics specialization. Do you think this is a good idea? My goal is to get an analyst position at an i-bank or consulting.

Better check the reasons why these UM and Stanford students are having a hard time finding work and see if it applies to your situation (also, whether attending Columbia will make a big difference in your career prospects vis-a-vis these schools). Could be that many of them are foreigners w/o US work authorization, or that they are targeting jobs that are very competitive that even Columbia and NYU FE grads might find it tough. When I brought my college friend to the FE department last year, however, the administrator told us that hiring was good in specific industries such as quant analysis for trading and hedge funds, and risk management.

I stay in Montclair right next to Pomona when I'm in LA. The nearby town of Claremont where Pomona College and Harvey Mudd are located is a beautiful place to visit.
If you get good grades in your MS degree to suppliment your Philippine college degree, then an analyst position may well be within your reach. Understand, however, that big-name Wall St. i-banks recruit first from top-tier universities for their analyst programs. This is because around 90% of their hires are selected by so-called "alumni committees" of university alumni working in these firms - in Morgan Stanley, for example, there is a Harvard committee, Columbia committee, Princeton committee, Dartmouth committee, Stanford committee and so on so whether intentionally or not, there is a bias for top-tier university grads.
In case you go to CSPU-Pomona and you find it challenging to enter an analyst program in the big firms, you can try to enter one of the regional boutique i-banks like RSM Equico or Montgomery and then shift to the larger banks as a lateral hire after a year, or go to b-school and enter a large i-bank as an associate after. Analysts from boutiques are pretty much in-demand in the larger banks as long as i-bank hiring picks up. Some of the analysts in the small i-bank I work in are now with larger firms like Lehman and BOFA.
It's also possible that some of the large firms could be hiring into their local offices where you can apply to right after you graduate. BOFA and Merrill are increasing their analyst staff in LA. When you get to Pomona, find a friend from UCLA or USC to forward you the job positings in their school career services database. You can also search for analyst postings in glocap.com and vault.com.
Whether you attend Columbia or CSPU-Pomona, you will have opportunities to work in i-banking.

I just got my admissions letter so I'm pretty sure to go to Columbia this July. :)
It seems that I have to prepare a lot of stuff though. About housing, I've been looking at the options and I-house seems to be highly regarded. To people who went to Columbia, what housing would you recommend? What are the pros and cons of the different housing options. I would definitely prefer a single room because I'm not comfortable having a room mate. If I were to choose I-house, are there particular floors/rooms that are better? Is it worth it to get a room with a sink or with the park view? If I get a Columbia university housing, are there any particular good apartments/streets that you would recommend? My rent budget should be around $ 750 a month, right? It would also be good if the place is not noisy or dangerous. Better too if near Columbia, the subway, and inexpensive supermarkets and restaurants.
I'm in Manila right now so I will probably do some shopping here first since it's bound to be cheaper. What things should I make sure to purchase here because they're considerably more expensive in New York? I would probably get a haircut, and go to the dentist and optical shop before I go.

i think knowledge of PDE is standard, you start out with an intro to math finance, then stochastic calculus.
most of my friends were from IT, so they had solid programming skills. but from what i know, the programming part shouldnt be that heavy. i guess you have some time to read up now before you start. if you have even the slightest experience in programming, im sure you can get past the learning curve easily.
the jobs part is a bit tricky. the class is pretty much spread out - you have new grads and 40yr old managing directors. one of my friends is still out of work (got an offer but was retracted later), because he has no experience at all. if you are serious about being a quant, remember, it's phd or nothing, since the industry has become much more sophisticated. if you have an ms, you'll start out as a junior quant (and you'll do the "dirty work" i.e. programming - you won't be building models yet, you're there to compile data, program, and backtest)

Congratulations!
I’m sure you’ll have a great experience studying there. Here’s a useful tip: try to use/experience ALL that the university has to offer, and not just your home department. Cross-enroll in other subjects that are offered outside your dept. if it interests you: watch university-hosted plays, attend university parties and festivals, get involved w/ campus ministry etc. – whatever may interest you. Even just studying in Butler Library can be a good experience. You’ll definitely be busy above your head with work but try to go exploring if you have the free time. One of my biggest regrets is limiting myself only to the b-school universe during my first year. By the time I was in my second year, I realized that there was only so much that I could do in my last year. Sayang. You only get to do this once in your life (or maybe twice if you decide on an MBA). BTW, I recommend that you join Liga, the Columbia Filipino club. They’ve been pretty active and successful over the past 2 years, with their events being well-attended by the Columbia community. No need to be active if you’re too busy but join the general group and help out in some events if you’re free.
Let me know when you get here so I can connect you to the Liga team for next year. I’ll also put you in the Ateneo NYC young alumni group. We’re about 120+ in membership and our events are usually well-attended. Looking forward to having you on board.

I just signed up online for university housing. I got a good location right across Columbia at 113th & Broadway and paid a measly $570/month for a room w/ shared bathroom and kitchen (no sala or dining room). My apartment wing had around 7 tenants.
You can also opt for an apartment share – your own room in a 3-room university apartment w/ shared kitchen, living room and bathroom. It’s slightly more expensive than my dorm bec. You share with much fewer people.

Saikee, I read in the I-house website that there are only 4 bathrooms for a whole floor. Is this a big problem like would there be a line if you have to take a shower and stuff? How clean are the bathrooms?
I am also planning to apply for the scholarships like the Outreach Grants, WIL, and LCU Foundation Grant. Are these relatively easy to obtain?

i agree that you should try to apply for an apartment via University Apartment Housing. you will get a good share at $750 -- share meaning you share an apartment, not a room. i pay only 600 for an apartment share but i live in a walkup (no elevator).
not to discount the firsthand testimony above regarding the ihouse but some friends do not like the ihouse because they say you can get a better room for a lower price. they do have a lot of activities, though, but looking at your curriculum i think you will be doing a lot of studying anyway (the rest of the time you will most likely spend with your classmates). i have never been to the ihouse rooms so you don't have to put much weight on this.
also mentioned above, the apartment in 113 and broadway great since it is cheap and spacious. it is like a dorm as a cleaning lady cleans the common areas like bathroom and kitchen unlike in a share.
when looking for my apartment (my 2nd), i really chose to be near broadway because it is closer to the subway, shops, and there are always people late at night. if you're on broadway, it might be noisy but new york is really noisy and you just get used to it.
aside from proximity to broadway, i also wanted a relatively spacious room since i study at home (beware: some rooms are really small), a share with only one other person (2 bedroom share), and large windows for natural light. i have these but my place has no elevator and i have to do laundry in the next building -- a real pain during winter. point is that it is hard to find a cheap and good place so you just have to settle with what is really important for your comfort and do away with what is not so important.
good luck and congratulations

Sometimes the weather in NYC is so unpredictable....for fall, wear at least a light jacket, sweater/sweatshirt.....but then again, if this is your first fall/winter in NYC or in a cold place...I would advice you to bundle up a little bit....Winter, the stuffs you needed are gloves, thermals pants/shirt/socks...scarf..ear muffs....boots....also since your in NYC, I would advice you to buy a decent sneaker. Your going to spend most of your time walking....so take care of your feet...
Most of the stuff you needed can be purchase in a dsicounted store....such as Century 21, Canal Street/china town, there's a lot of factory store around the tristate area....woodbury common, clinton crossing, etc.
One advice again is your buying something in china town/canal street...there's no harm haggling....just like if your buying something sa palenke...tumawad ka....most of the time you get the price you want....
Good luck with your career....hope you will like NYC....

The rooms at the i-house are pretty small - smaller than the cheap dorm room I got at 113th. And yes, the rates are more expensive than what you can find in other u-housing buildings.
The plus side of it, like Saikee mentioned, is that there are lots of social/cultural activities going on there. Also, the i-house has in-house facilities like a deli, bar that serves alcoholic drinks and a game room to name a few. I-house is also known to be a cupid's hunting ground where residents find significant others from all over the world - and they advertise successful cross-national relationships through testimonials in the halls.
As for me, my priority was convenience and to save money so the 113th room I got was just right. There are a couple of bars anyway w/in the same block and I was already meeting people from different places simply by attending/joining campus activities when I had the free time (which won't be much if you're a grad student).

Julie-d, now that you mention it, the apartment shares sound interesting. Aside from the ones in 113 and broadway, what streets would have nice furnished apartments (2-4 bedroom)? I would want to have my own room and the apartment should preferably be bright with a reasonable amount of windows. It would also be great if the place has its own laundry room.
btw, which specific apartment shares are the ones with the cleaning lady?I'm quite picky with the bathrooms so they have to be clean.
rabbaddal, do you live in an apartment share? you mentioned that you have 7 tenants in your place but the apartment share description says that there are only 2-4 bedrooms in an apartment. what are the differences among the buildings at 113 and broadway? i noticed that there are lots of choices in that area.

I didn't get an appartment share. I stayed in the dorm. Besides the price, dorms are different from apartment shares in that:
1. Dorms have more people sharing in a wing. I mentioned that I had 7 tenants to share with. Appartment shares, at least for single people, on the other hand, have only 3 people at most (1 for each room).
2. Dorms for grad stduents don't have living rooms and dining rooms. Appartment shares have both.
I'm not sure if apartment shares include cleaning ladies, though. Yup, there are lots of choices in the 113th area, not to mention the proximity of 3 well-stocked groceries, bars, cafes, St. Paul's chapel and Riverside Park. It is also a short walking distance from both 110 and 116 Sts. subway stations. For the price I paid, it was well worth it given my priorities.

I've been doing some research and from what I read, the Riverside Drive vicinity seems to be an attractive place to stay. I went to the housing website and 610 W 115th is described as spacious with large windows. I also like the fact that it's near Broadway, Columbia, and Riverside Drive. I also found another apartment description in 434 W 120th and they said it had an elegant lobby so I'm thinking perhaps the rest of the building is pretty ok too. The picture of the building at 423 W 118th seems good. Unfortunately, most of the apartments in the housing site do not have descriptions and pictures.

hey krystle, CONGRATS! Welcome to the group!
Shopping:::
Yes, definitely shop in Manila. It's much cheaper. Get your winter clothes there. I got mine in Greenhills.
Computer:::
I'd suggest you get a pc with wi-fi (wireless internet). Columbia is wired with wi-fi. NYC is full of wi-fi hotspots. I've hardly ever hooked up my laptop to the ethernet or cable; it's almost always through wi-fi. And, its FREE!
Misc:
BTW, I suggest you buy some OPMs (original philippine music) and bring VCDs of pinoy movies. It sounds cheesy, I know, but trust me - you'll be glad you had them with you once you're here in NY =)
lastly, kyrstle, i sent you a PM. check mo nalang dun. Congrats ulit!

does the topic refer only to New York City or New York State?
Anyway, I'll be attending graduate school in SUNY-Buffalo (MS/PhD Computer Science) starting this Fall, and probably would be migrating after (probably not in Buffalo... ahaha).
Anyone from the Buffalo/Niagara-Western New York area?
Buffalo? Crazy weather there. I don't think there are a lot of Filipinos there--I met a lot of Polish and Russian doctors in Buffalo, but not Asians. Ikain mo na lang ako ng buffalo wings at Anchor Bar at North St., just a couple of blocks away from the SUNY-Buffalo hospital. It's where Buffalo wings was invented. Best buffalo wings I've ever tasted. I'm still dreaming of it.

EVERYONE (and i mean EVERYONE) who I have talked with regarding Buffalo always warn me to brace for snow storms, blizzards and the like. But i guess its a blessing rin since I dont have any other choice but to concentrate on my studies/research.... stuck in the lab! hahaha.
I have heard about Anchor Bar, I'll make sure I go there when I go to Buffalo... even though I'm not a fan of Buffalo wings here, but it should be a good thing to do.
SUNY-Buffalo hospital is in the south (city) campus, I'll be in the north (amherst) campus so I won't get to go there too often. Or at least that's what I read. Besides, I dont think Id go more than a few miles during winter. hahaha

To those who lived in Columbia UAH, how hard was it to get housing? Someone told me that my chances of getting housing were quite low. The website indicates that someone from at least 250 miles away would be given priority. Do you think that someone from the Philippines would have a significantly better chance than someone from the U.S.? The thing is, though, I would be putting a U.S. address as my permanent address.

Hmm, I guess I could do that. I just thought that maybe I would need to put the U.S. address as the permanent one because of the green card. Is there a risk of getting penalized though since I'm supposed to already live in the U.S.?

Since you graduated from Ateneo only recently, you can argue that your residence for the past 4 - 5 years has always been in Manila. If you want to play it safe, you can declare your relatives' address in the West Coast.

Hey peeps!
Been working here in New York for the past year, and I so miss Max's Fried Chicken! Buti pa sa west coast, there are a few restaurants...Would be great if you could share tips/secrets how to do it...could not find anything on the net at all (unlike KFC, pwedeng ma-duplicate based on internet recipes). Chicken looks very simple to prepare but easier said than done. A friend told me to use patis and pepper, and to steam it first before deep frying but I don't know about that...
I have tons of Jufran at home but no Max's chicken to enjoy it with...
Help!

as long as you apply early, i believe you will be assigned an apartment.
pros and cons of apartment sharing... cons, 1. no cleaning lady (you and your share mates clean your bathroom and kitchen); 2. you pay utilities over and above the rent -- 1 bill for gas and electricity; 3. you usually cannot choose who you are sharing with. from other people's experiences, the person you are sharing with can really make a lot of difference to your happiness in your apartment, more so than in a dorm. pros, 1. more space since you have a living room... you can even throw a party; 2. you share with only 1 or 2 other people unlike in a dorm.

Do you think there will be a discrepance if I use my Philippine address as my permanent housing? The thing is, I will be using the US address for other documents like registration, financial aid, etc. Speaking of financial aid, I looked at the site and it is difficult to determine which private loan packages are the best. Aside from the Federal financial aid, which bank or private loan should I get?

I see. Yup, in my case, all my correspondencies w/ Columbia were sent to my home in Manila and my dorm at 113th. If you want to be sure, at least declare your West Coast address. If neither of these are options for you, call UAH at 212-854-9313 and inquire w/ Ms. Marge Jordan.

Aside from Federal financial aid like Stafford loans, Citibank also provides private loans through the Citiassist program. Check the website at:

I just submitted my application for UAH. Thanks for all your suggestions. I indicated that I preferred a dorm style single room in a suite, similar to 600 W. 113th St, with budget of $570-600. I also mentioned that I would like to stay within the 112th-115th streets near Broadway. Also wrote that having an ethernet jack in room and laundry facility in the basement is important. And if possible, a corner room at a high floor. Although it is highly unlikely that all these would be approved, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
I met a current MS FE student at the Wilmott forums though, and he told me that almost no one in his class got UAH and I should look for apartments at craigslist now. Even if he was from Shanghai, he wasn't given housing. I'm feeling worried about this. I checked the graduate engineering website and it mentions that "Graduate housing through UAH is processed for the fall and spring terms only. Summer sublets are also available through individual referrals. The UAH Office maintains an active listing for those interested." Does this mean that I will not be granted housing since my classes begin in July? However, the UAH website says that there will be limited housing available for those beginning in June or July.
Considering that the school/department has to approve my housing application first before the UAH can assign me housing, do you think I can do anything to increase my chances of getting UAH by July? I already emailed the person in charge of housing for school of engineering, and I asked about the housing approval process. I still haven't received a reply though.

At least you've done the first step - apply online.
Yes, there is a lot of subletting activity going around for the summer. The problem is that the process is very inefficient. People either post flyers around the campus or send out e-mail. There's no way to get a complete list of everyone subletting their appartments online.
Try calling the UAH office and tell them your predicament. My sense is that they will either tell you not to worry because they may have some vacancies, or they can refer you to somebody subletting. But it's hard to say; at least you can get some advice from them. Do this simultaneously while you wait for the school of engineering to get back to you. Subletting, if you pursue this option, is between the tenant and the sublettee so there may be no need to get approval from the school of engineering.

I've been asking around more and I've been told that there were some people who were offered housing, but it was only for the start of fall term in september. I guess it is highly likely then that I would have to look for a sublet for July 1 - August 31. However, I am still not sure since UAH still has to inform if I will get housing or not. I think UAH will inform me in the middle of June. Will this be too late already to look for a sublet? Speaking of sublets, does anyone know of a sublet fulfilling my preferences?
Also, I was just wondering, are there any other entrances/exits to Columbia aside from the gate at 116th and Broadway? What are the days and times the other gates are open?

Best of luck in trying to find housing. While UAH will get back to you around June, do try to give them a call to ask for advice. Who knows? The person you speak to may know of an available sublet. Besides asking around, you can also try going to NY earlier and go to the buildings and bulletting boards yourself since these sublets are usually posted in flyers by the tenants.

Columbia has multiple entrances around the entire campus. The main gates (around 4 of them) are open 24 hours, 7 days a week.

2 main entrances are at opposite ends - 116th & Broadway and 116th & Amsterdam. Theoretically, 116th cuts across Columbia but this portion (in Columbia) is closed to motor vehicle traffic so it's generally a pedestrian avenue.
Another gate is located along 115th St. between Broadway and Amsterdam beside Butler Library.
The fourth gate is located near the Law School at 116th between Amserdam and Morningside. Chances are you won't be using this gate since if you're coming from/going to the engineering building, you'll probably be exiting/entering either the Amsterdam or Broadway gates.

I forgot one more 24-hour gate - the one along Broadway bet. 116th & 115th right beside Lerner Hall.
And there are two 24-hour gates along 115th bet. Broadway and Amesterdam - one near John Jay and another near Lerner Hall (the 115th side). Both are beside Butler Library at opposite ends.

Columbia has an off campus housing website where you can search for apartments in the neighborhood. If someone is subletting her apartment, this is where he/she will list her place.
http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ire/ocha/
However, you need to have a Columbia username to access it. Since you already have an acceptance letter, you should be able to get one (from which department, I do not know).

I've been looking at Craigslist but the problem is when I inquire, the owners/tenants invite me to come over and look at the place. Same with the subletting registry. Since I will only go to NY about a week before classes start, there doesn't seem to be a way for me to find housing beforehand.
I already asked for a username and password from the off campus housing website a couple of weeks ago. But they still haven't replied.
I also asked former students and the problem really does seem to be with the IEOR department. I think they use their allocated slots mostly for undergrads and PhDs. Is there anything I can tell the department to increase my chances? Or would emailing them and being "makulit" just ruin my chances? Maybe I can bring them a gift from the Philippines when classes begin in July.

Honestly, I don't suggest looking for housing in craigslist. You'd never know who that person you're dealing with. It's really sketchy if you do that.
Stick to Columbia endorsed housing. Get in touch with the admissions office of columbia, or the international students office of columbia and ask for leads.

What's the problem w/ the IEOR dept.? Do they just approve housing eligibility or do they also allocate housing to their students? If it's the former, then there should be no reason why they can't approve your housing request, leaving it to supply-and-demand to determine whether or not you should get housing. On the other hand, if they have to allocate your housing, then your concern about them prioritizing PHD students is plausible, albeit unfair. When I applied for housing, I didn't need to defer to the b-school to get my application is approved.
Regardless, there's nothing wrong with giving them a phone call to follow-up. Tell them you're an int'l student w/ nowhere to stay when you get to NYC.
Also, I'll include your e-mail to the Ateneo NYC Young Alumni group so you can send an e-mail and try to rent a room or bedspace in case worse comes to worst and you can't find a room on campus.

I emailed the IEOR department. I wrote:
"I am an incoming MS Financial Engineering student and I would like to ask about the housing approval process. I was able to talk with some current students and they informed me that even if I applied for UAH, it is unlikely that I will be given housing by July or even September. Considering I will be coming from the Philippines, would this also be applicable to my situation?
I already contacted Lisa and she informed me that housing decisions would only be made in the middle of June. As I will be coming from the Philippines and would only arrive in New York on July 1 at the earliest though, it would already be too late for me to find a place to stay if I am not assigned university housing.
May I know if I can do anything to help the IOER department or the SEAS process my housing application?I look forward to your favorable response. Thank you."
The only reply I got was:
"Unfortunately, the IEOR department does not get involved in housing until Lisa contacts us. I have CC'd Lisa Horelick and Peter Fisher on this email. Perhaps they have other suggestions."

What's the role of Lisa and Peter? With what office are they affiliated with?
Which begs the earlier question - What precisely is the role of the IEOR department in the student housing process? Are they the ones who allocate housing or do they merely approve housing requests?

The one who replied to the letter above is the academic and career advisor at IEOR. Peter is also a coordinator for the IEOR. Lisa is the housing liaison for SEAS student affairs.
I'm not sure exactly what is the precise role of the IEOR department. I've been getting my information mostly from a guy from the Wilmott forums:

June 23-24, PHILIPPINE FLAG colors LIGHT up the
Empire State Building
Message: June 23 - 24 Philippine flag colors
LIGHT up the
Empire State Building
Message: Collaborative Opportunities for Raising
Empowerment, Inc.
www.core-nyc.org
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 8, 2004
Press Release No. 2004-015
Contact: Lara M.B. Manjares
Email: core_vcmember@yahoo.com
Phone: 917-951-7287
New York, NY - For the very first time on June
23rd and 24th, the
Empire State Building will dazzle the Manhattan
skyline with the colors of the
Philippine flag. Yellow, blue and red lights will
brightly illuminate the tower
of the Empire State Building in honor of the
Filipino community.
According to the 2000 U.S. Census, there are 2.3
million Americans
of Filipino heritage, nearly 200,000 of whom
reside in the New York Tri-State
area, an increase of 55% since 1990. This
incredible growth makes the
Filipino community the second largest Asian
American group in this country.
Spearheaded by Collaborative Opportunities for
Raising Empowerment,
Inc. (CORE), a New York City-based not-for-profit
organization of young Filipino
professionals, this year' s lighting will be the
beginning of
an annual event on the evenings of June 23rd and
24th that will celebrate the
contributions and accomplishments of the Filipino
community. Although June 12th, the official
Philippine Independence Day, had already been
reserved, CORE
successfully vied for the two dates to continue
the celebration of this important day.
To mark the inception of this momentous occasion,
a special lighting
ceremony will be held on June 23rd, 6:30 p.m., at
the Philippine Consulate,
Kalayaan Hall, 556 Fifth Avenue (between 45th &
46th Street). Leaders and
prominent members of the community, including the
officials of the Philippine
Consulate General in New York, led by the
Honorable Cecilia B. Rebong,
Philippine Consul General, will participate at
this groundbreaking event.
Consul General Rebong says, "We congratulate the
members of
CORE for effecting this historical and
significant endeavor. This will be a monumental
event and should make all Filipinos proud. This
is a great tribute to the
whole Filipino American community. We also
express our appreciation to the
management of the Empire State Building for their
recognition of the Filipino
community in New York through the holding of this
annual event."
Lydia A. Ruth, Director of Public
Relations/Special Events
Coordinator for the Empire State Building,
sharing the same sentiment, proclaims, "The
Empire State Building is honored to recognize the
Filipino American
community with our world famous tower lighting."
Yellow, blue and red were chosen to represent the
various components
of the Philippine flag. Yellow, as the top light,
symbolizes the eight rays
of the sun, representing the first eight
Philippine provinces that revolted
against Spanish rule. The middle light
corresponds to the top blue field on the
Philippine flag representing peace, truth and
justice, and the bottom light stands
for the red field signifying patriotism and valor.

krystle, are you going to be studying at Columbia? Why don't you try living off-campus. It's much cheaper than dorming. There are a lot of cheap studios in the Morningside Heights area. As long as you look for an apartment above 96th Street on the Upper West Side, the rates get lower. :)

I got them for my H1 visa petition. They were very good. I haven't kept a tab yet on how much I paid them so far though. BTW, don't scrimp on the lawyer because a really good one will styick and follow-up on your case like a bloodhound to a fox.

Mga Kababayan,
We are currently seeking people who could provide advice about organizing a not-for-profit foundation. Our mission is to create opportunities through technology education to underprivileged youths in the Philippines.
As our first project, we will install computer classrooms in selected public high schools, develop course materials and train educators. We have already identified institutional and individual donors here in the U.S. to help fund the project. There is also a brewing interest from a sector in the RP government to support the program.
Currently, we are looking for lawyers and accountants to assist us in the formation stage. Soon, we will be needing your help to promote our cause and develop other projects. There will be many different opportunities to help.
Please send an email to juliusg@yahoo.com if you share our interest to help fellow Filipinos back home.
Best regards,
Julius Gorospe

Young Professionals to hold event highlighting Filipinos in Politics and Public Service
New York - Filipino Americans have twice the opportunity for political excitement this election year. With Philippine and United States Presidential elections in 2004, the role of politics in our lives and community has received unusual attention. To tackle some of the day's issues, Collaborative Opportunities for Raising Empowerment, Inc. (CORE) will be hosting a speaker panel at Lighthouse International (111 East 59th Street, NYC) on October 8th highlighting professionals who have made an impact through public service. CORE will focus attention on harnessing the individual successes of these professionals toward collective empowerment.
Politics affect us, whether we like it, hate it, or are simply apathetic toward it. Historically, political recognition has eluded Asian American groups despite their noteworthy academic, entrepreneurial, and professional achievements. Organizations like the Asian Pacific American Voters Alliance (APAVA) and its member organizations are changing that. These organizations are trying to promote "an informed and active Asian America that is involved in the civic life of this country."
Involvement is important, indeed. "When Filipino Americans are active in politics - learn about issues, become citizens, exercise their right to vote, write and call our policymakers about important issues - we are sending the message that Filipino Americans are an important part of the American society and that our views and concerns deserve to be considered by our policymakers and community," says Irene B. Bueno, Co-founder and Principal of the Nueva Vista Group LLC. "When we are not active in politics, we are sending the message that we are not important and that what we say and what we care about does not matter. We want to have our voices heard particularly on issues of great concern to our community - civil rights, Filipino World War II veterans equity, immigration fairness, and many other issues. Until we are engaged in politics on a larger scale it will be difficult for our voices to be heard by policymakers and American society." Irene is one of the featured panelists at CORE's third Speaker Series event on October 8th. She will be joined by Jean Lobell, and Glenn D. Magpantay. Tristan Loanzon will moderate.
Through the experiences shared by the panel, CORE hopes to emphasize the importance of community involvement and the power that one can have to make a difference, especially during this election year. "This [event] is a great opportunity for the Young Professionals to get inspired and motivated," says Jess Villarina, Chair of CORE. "Sharing success stories by great leaders in the civil and public services will help achieve self-empowerment. CORE is excited to be kicking off these types of high impact events, such as the Speaker Series. This is one of many ways to give back to our community."
For more information regarding this upcoming event, or other CORE programs, please contact Abigail Christine Veneracion at abbycv@yahoo.com or Janette Lechica at lechic1011@aol.com.

Below is the announcement:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Friends,
I am writing to invite you to attend a presentation by ANCOP Foundation (USA) Inc., which is supporting the work of Gawad Kalinga (GK) in the Philippines and other Third World countries. Gawad Kalinga is a multisectoral partnership initiative that is transforming poverty-stricken areas in the Philippines into vibrant, empowered communities. GK has built up an impressive record in the Philippines by employing an integrated, holistic and sustainable approach to poverty alleviation encompassing shelter and site development, health, education, livelihood and community empowerment.
The ANCOP/Gawad Kalinga presentation will take place at the UNIDO Office in New York (1 UN Plaza, DC1-1110) on 30 August 20 04 from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. to be presented by ANCOP Directors, Sonny Aguiling and Roly Balanza.
Those of you who have long wanted to do something about the poverty in our country now have a chance to learn more about an initiative that has been working well. I can say this without any qualification because I have seen a GK project in Payatas, Quezon City and was quite impressed with what volunteerism, caring and sharing have managed to do for a poverty-stricken community in our country.
If you are attending, it would be appreciated if you could please get in touch with Joy Genio (963-6887; Genio@un.org) so that proper arrangements can be done accordingly.
I look forward to seeing you all there.
Hi!
Does anyone here know a decent/reasonably priced mover for our move back to the Philippines. We have about a full roomfull of stuff (maybe 20-25 balikbayan boxes), that we'd like to ship home.
Is it cheaper to ship Balikbayan boxes through Forex, etc. and then find a mover for the other stuff (as there are some items that will not fit balikbayan boxes)? Or use one general US-based shipper for all? No large furniture or cabinets.
thanks in advance...
FAHSI launches conversational Tagalog course
Young professionals, students reclaim culture via language
NEW YORK --- Beginning on Sept. 14, the Filipino American Human Services, Inc. (FAHSI) will offer a 12-week conversational Tagalog
course at the Philippine Center in Manhattan. The class will meet twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday nights, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30
p.m.
The course will provide college students, recent graduates, and young professionals lessons on conversational Tagalog, covering the basic rules of grammar, verbs, and common vocabulary. In addition, there will be discussions on the history, culture, and business practices of Filipinos.
Isang magandang proyekto ito ng FAHSI. Matagal nang sabik ang publikong Pilipino, Amerikano at iba pang lahi dito sa New York na
matuto ng Tagalog, stated Consul General Cecilia B. Rebong. Learning our language is a key to better understanding and appreciating Filipino culture, mindset, and way of life. Our
commendations to FAHSI and Mr. Luis Francia. We hope that many will take advantage of this opportunity.
Former Tagalog student, Lara Manjares, said: I still use what I have learned from that class today. We learned a lot about the Filipino language, culture and each other's experiences as a Filipino American.
NYU professor and author, Luis H. Francia, will teach the conversational Tagalog course using both Tagalog textbooks and multimedia presentations.
Luis is author of the semi-autobiographical Eye of the Fish: A Personal Archipelago (Kaya Press, 2001), and co-editor of Vestiges
of War: The Philippine-American War and the Aftermath of an Imperial Dream 1899-1999 (New York University Press, 2002).
His latest poetry collection Museum of Absences is due out this October. Currently, Luis teaches Pilipino Language and Culture at
New York University's Asian Pacific American (APA) Studies Program.
Classes will meet at the Philippine Center located at 556 Fifth Avenue (between 45th and 46th streets). Registration is $400/adults
and $300/students, with valid student ID. Enrollment is limited, and applicants are encouraged to sign up early. Registration will be taken on a first come, first serve basis.
FAHSI is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization established to meet the social service needs of the Filipino American community in New
York. FAHSI currently offers after-school and summer youth programs, seniors programs, basic computer skills training, immigration seminars, weekly discussion groups, and other cultural and educational programs.
For more information or to register, contact Julman Tolentino at (718) 883-1295, or visit our website at http://www.fahsi.org.
You must have your song memorized as reading the lyrics will not be allowed. All songs must be radio-friendly (nothing bastos hehehe). No dancing routines are allowed...it's radio, and no one will see it.
If your are scheduled, you must be at the radio station (554
Bloomfield Ave. Bloomfield, NJ) on Sunday afternoon by 1:00pm
sharp...Filipino time will not be tolerated. You must schedule an
appointment and show up for that appointment...no chickens, or
scaredy-cats hehehe. You are allowed to bring your family and friends for moral support. There should be at least 4 - 6 contestants scheduled every Sunday. If you are scheduled and do not get a chance to perform, you will be carried over on the next week and you will be first up. All contestants must supply home number, cell number, email address, and home address to enter. If you are a kid...then you must have your parents enter your name.
You must have a thick skin for this contest, because if you
suck...you will get gonged and we will make fun of you! And, I mean
that!
Listeners will be allowed to call in their opinions live on the air at 973-743-0200.
Every person that enters the contest will receive a prize from our sponsors and advertisers...even if you get gonged! Nobody will go away empty handed.
The 12 week event will be live on the air on our Radio Pinoy units that can be purchased at lokal Filipino stores in the Tri-State area and also simulcast can be heard on our free websites at:
http://www.radiopinoyusa.com/ and http://www.pinoyradio.net/
The event will also be covered every week in the Filipino Times
Newspaper (a weekly national publication) complete with pix and
updates.
During the contest, we will have celebrity guest judges (a different one each week)!!!
Btw, the Grandprize Winner will receive round-trip tickets to the Philippines and a guest appearance singing on Channel 5 in the Philippines! So, if you are TNT, maybe you should'nt try out for this contest hehehe...there is no substitute prize for the Grandprize Winner.
Every week, one winner from each show will move on to the big finale show that will be held in a live concert at Westminster Hall at Bloomfield College. There will be 12 finalists competing on that night in December. There will be special guest stars that will perform on that night as well. One contestant will walk away winning the Grandprize!
More details to follow as they are open to the public...
Please pass this on to every Filipino that you know...
Hi there,
Just wondering if anyone could be of help. I am looking to move to New York in the next year or so, for a change of scenery. How is the job market there right now? And anyone out there who can help me?
The catch is that I need to find an employer who will be able to continue the immigration process my current employer is working through for me. I know that complicates things, but I'm still hoping that there would still be options for me out there.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Thanks for the info, Cesar17! Unfortunately, I am in neither field. I actually studied IT in college, and have about 6 years' experience. I've actually been looking in craigslist.org just to get an idea of how things are there. Am I right to assume that the IT field is pretty much saturated right now?
Strawberri ------you could check the city's website for any IT job. www.nyc.gov. Under City Agencies, click IT job info or check any of one of the city agencies. The NYPD is also looking for IT professionals, here's the site http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/misc/employment.html
