 Uuhmmm.... that sounds somewhat racist, don't you think? But to answer your question, I think it is because of their diet -- spicy food.

Poor Hygiene - A nurse friend of mine working at one of the hospitals here in KSA told me that she once accidentally entered the dormitory WC of her Indian colleagues and guess what there were no soaps or shampoos around. Further investigation revealed that "nagtitipid" daw the Indian nurses that's why they don't use soaps, shampoos pa kaya. That's why also, the oils and bacteria that causes odor are retained in their skin.
"Recycling" of Shirts - I have many Indian friends here in the office who told me that Filipinos are "maaksaya" because we wash our shirts after a single use. They say that you waste detergent and shorten the lifespan of the shirt due to frequent washing. They, on the other hand, wash their shirts only after a week's usage!
Food - This I don't believe. If that were the case me and my Filipino friends, who are Indian food fanatics would have had the same, for lack of a more appropriate word, repugnant smell.:~(

Ahhh... ganun pala yun. Akala ko dati it's because of the food they are eating kaya they don't smell good.

It's their diet daw. Plus the fact that we're not used to the smell. One of my dad's foreigner friends once said that we Filipinos also have a distinct smell... except we don't notice it, 'cause we're used to it.

I've been smelling them in my place of work, in the shops and in the bus for a number of years but still couldn't bear it. I don't know about your Dad's friend <*sniff*sniff* sniffs self just to make sure> but Filipinos here in the Kingdom are known for their sweet and clean image. They come to work fresh and well-bathed and clean up again once they reach home, especially nowadays when the merc shoots up to 40+ degrees.

I think it is a combination of food and hygiene. The curry spices tend to make you emit a certain odor specially if you eat large quantities of it. I have seen a lot of indians at work, school, around the malls. One indian girl named Shalni who is one of my exes best friend says that more americanized indians (not native americans) do not smell that bad compared to indians who just came in.

we had a group of indian neighbors before,
and talagang di sila mahilig maligo.
but some of them who have stayed a little longer
here in the philippines learned how to take
a bath more often dahil na rin sa pagpuna ng mga co-workers
nila. pero yun talagang straight from india na
dumating talagang kakaiba ang scent (tipong di mo magugustuhan). yung mga pagkain
like the spices that they add to their food
nakakaapekto rin yon sa amoy ng pawis ng tao sa tingin ko.

Could it also have something to do with their religion or culture? I mean aside from food, that is, if food is a reason?

for the record, i am not indian. i've met only one indian person in my life (a carpool mate) and she didn't smell. i have been in places where there were indians and though i smelled that smell you all are referring to, i do not think of this as 'body odor' but simply think that they smell 'different', not necessarily bad.
i think this thread is RACIST. especially SIMONESEZ.
it is a known fact (well at least to some people) that Indians smell the way they do because of the food they eat. authentic indian food (and i don't mean the curry that we eat here) is loaded with spices. a simple curry dish can have more than 5 different spices with quantities greater than 1 tsp each. that's a lot more than the pinch of spice we use in our cooking.
also, use of ingredients such as onions can also affect your smell, it comes out when you sweat (not to mention when you breathe).
for some, indians may smell bad, but that's only because they're not used to it. indians do not think their fellow indians smell bad. abroad, foreigners think that we Filipinos have a certain smell also. and whoever told you that we smell good? how many times have you been in a jampacked elevator, and the person beside you (who's pinoy) stinks?
it's sad to think that there are people like you who aren't mature enough to accept the cultural differences of people from other countries. :(

For someone who's met ONLY ONE INDIAN PERSON can you please ask yourself how you were able to arrive at such a broad, waaaay off broad in fact, generalization
i think this thread is RACIST. especially SIMONESEZ.
How dare you. Read the post again. The topic was about finding a rationale on why these people smell this way. I simply volunteered information as I work and deal with a lot of Indian people in my country of work and in fact a lot of them are my good friends. If I said "Indians are the lowliest forms of life because they are smelly" now that would constitute denigrating other nationalities and therefore would amount to racism. Look at my posts again and you'll see that all my statements are based on my personal experience in the hope that englightened people here (which by the way does not include you) would get the answer to this topic's question. Can you mention even one statement where I didn't justify what I said, which would constitute unnecessary prejudice against another person Indian or not. I didn't start the topic by the way.

A known fact. Which studies concluded and which groups made the study? Again go back to my post (clearly you just pissed all over the place and didn't check your facts) where I mentioned that me and my friends are fond of Indian food, owing in large part to our excellent friendship with our multitude of Indian colleague and friends (again, how dare you), but we don't smell that way.

You think after x years working and dealing with Indians, Filipinos that I know, including me, who were taught proper hygiene for the longest time would get used to that smell. I was the one who claimed Pinoys smell good because that is what I experienced first hand and that is what people here in the Kingdom tell me. Baka ikaw yong nangangamoy sa elevator.
it's sad to think that there are people like you who aren't mature enough to accept the cultural differences of people from other countries.
It's equally pathetic of confused people like you to jump to conclusions without first considering the nature of the thread topic. Don't talk to me about accepting cultural differences if you have not worked for/with nationalities from 20 odd countries speaking 20 odd languages and in another 20 odd dialects. If you thought the topic was racist in the first place you should have called the moderator's attention and not insulted anybody here. For that I think you stink.:lol::lol:
To the Moderator: I apologize for this outburst which is really uncalled for, considering. But sometimes some people just go over the line of reasoning and need reckoning.

i heard from somewhere that there's this certain region in India wherein they chew on something (which causes that smell) everyday, kaya yun. that's probably why not all Indians smell that way...kase baka yun iba, they're not accustomed to that chewing tradition thing. then again, that someone who told me could have just been guessing the reason behind the different smell of Indians or something like that. how could we ever find out kaya? can't ask naman coz that would be just too rude. accept nalang, coz i don't think the smell ain't that bad anyways, it's just different especially for us filipinos who aren't used to something/someone smelling bad.

No worries, dude. Something I picked up from past conversations. Lots of things cultural or not from one ethnicity that others find funny. It's no wonder most of us here can't help but laugh at the expense of others... :)

Indian people say (since they usually don't eat meat) that when they arrive here in America, Americans give off a different smell to them (a meat eater smell) that sorta turns them off

KingTriton: i agree with u. there are a lot of people with different nationalities that smell bad too BUT indians are predominantly, have a distinct and annoying smell. i've worked with a lot of indians here in the US and MOST of them have a different kind of smell. there are also some europeans or americans that smell bad but from what i've observed, the indians are tops in the list. i'm not really sure if it's the food that they eat but it could be attributed most to their personal hygiene. i said that coz i noticed that most indians that has been here for a long time already doesnt seem to smell so bad compared to those who just arrived here. must be in their culture or something. again, these are just my observations from my numerous encounters with indians.
