suggestion/s for the tv coverage :
during halftime, while making the analysis, instead of focusing the camera on the face of the commentator, why not just show the cheerleaders in leading their school's respective rah-rahs in the middle of the court? the halftime cheerleading should be a focus of the tv coverage. unless, of course, pwede yung babae niyong commentator ang ifocus ng camera (aldeguer yata yon). hehe.
and please, wag lang ateneo and lasalle cheerers ang pakita naman. the panel is loaded with ateneans and lasallites already. glad to note that most in the panel keep their objectivity in the coverage. wish i can say that about wacky (?) trillo though. so obvious when lasalle is losing coz his face is so transparent. i can still remember his "pikon" face during one of ust's title-clinchers a few years back. he does try to keep objective though, but his face betrays him. he starts sounding patronizing when he tries to compliment a lasalle opponent.
that jude turcuato guy however is good. though it is obvious what school he comes from, he does a great job researching the backgrounds of the players (what high school they played for, what schools recruited them, etc).

Dear Marooned,
Thank you very much for all your suggestions and comments regarding the TV Coverage. We welcome all your suggestions on how we can further improve the TV Coverage.
As for your suggestion for the Halftime Analysis - as much as we would like to show the cheering in its entirety, we are limited by time constraints as we can only load up our commercials during the halftime.
As you know, the commercials is what has kept the UAAP Coverage going for the past 9 years.
Second, halftime is only limited to ten minutes based on basketball rules.
We do try to focus or insert the cheering once in a while when Ella or JC do their spiels for the halftime segments or interviews.
I hope you noticed that last Saturday and Sunday, we inserted the cheering of the other schools.
We cannot also superimpose our graphics of the halftime stats over the cheering because it distracts the viewer from reading the stats. And it is considered a "no-no" in TV production.
Regarding the commentators, it is just a coincidence that they are from Ateneo (Jimmy and JC) and La Salle (Joaqui, Ella and Luigi).
As for Jude "Kaboom"Turcuato, he is actually from Chicago. But he took his masteral studies in Ateneo.
But behind the cameras - the TV production Team are alumnus of UST, Assumption, Maryknoll.
The La Sallites and the Ateneans may be on Camera but the heart and soul of the TV Production Team are from UP.

Silverstar is the only production outfit that shows a unique view of the basketball court. They provide televiewers a concurrent view of both on-court action and the other players & coaches on bench.
Its the same style of coverage in the NBA. The other outfits show only the backsides of the bench, giving way to advertising space.
I just hope they can have a slow-mo replay of the players' & coaches' reactions especially during the closing minutes of the game.
Want more ratings? More chicks on the panel. As long as they know basketball, pretty and talks slick.
Bring back your special features such as the top 5 plays of the week or that contest where you shoot from the halfcourt line.

Hmm, does silverstar also operate this site? I didnt notice immediately, but kaboom is Jude, right? And Angel is ??
Thanks for the explanations. You do cover the games pretty well, all things considered. Maybe, you guys dont have the slickness of Vintage yet (am i allow to say that?); on the other hand, this allows for a freshness in the coverage.
If you cant focus on the cheerleaders, why not get more female casters then? hehehe. just a suggestion. hope i dont sound like a male pig.

I surely wish that Silverstar can flash the Yr. Level and College Courses of the players while they're taking their free throws. After all, they're supposed to be student-athletes.

We really cannot blame Joaqui Trillo for the smirk in his face whenever La Salle loses. After all, he's just an ordinary human, and also a solid La Salle alumnus who loves his alma mater and sports so much. In fact, he is a member of La Salle's Sports Hall of Fame for his active participation in the NCAA decades ago. :)

No, Silverstar does not operate this site. A group of us - private individuals - decided the time was ripe for a web forum dealing with Philippine sports and other local issues. Many of our friends who come here are rabid UAAP fans and supporters and Silverstar has agreed to help promote the site. Our vision is to develop all the different aspects of the site not just the UAAP portion although all you UAAP fans have gotten the UAAP forum off to a rousing start! Kaboom is part of our founding group and he together with his friends at Silverstar and the UAAP have agreed to give a lot of time and effort to keeping you UAAP junkies up to date with everything that is going on! So keep those posts coming and we will try our best to keep up!

I'm glad that Silverstar's covering the UAAP instead of Vintage Sports. Sure, NCAA games get hyped during PBA telecasts, but they rarely show the games live. I'm sure kaboom will agree with me when I wish Silverstar continues to cover the UAAP in succeeding seasons.
However, as a basketball junkie, I'm not really satisfied with the kind of stats shown on TV, especially when the player takes a free throw. I'm not interested in province or hometown -- what I want are points, rebounds, and other relevant info.
And as for marooned's request for female casters, I wish they'd bring in someone like Ria Tanjuatco. For you guys who don't know what I'm talking about, she was this cute courtside reporter who did the UAAP beat two years back. Best of all, she seems to know her basketball, as evidenced by her stints in PBA and MBA broadcasts.

jude, the use of "kaboom!" is annoying. please stop saying it. to the trillos, brush up on your grammar; don't force your the use of english if you can't speak it correctly.

Now that you guys know my identity, I just wanna thank everyone for posting all your opinions, comments, etc.
to atenista91, I have gotten so much positive feedback with the use of "kaboom" during coverages which is why I've continued to use it. You are actually the first one to express annoyance on the term. I will try to limit using it in the future so it won't sound overdone. I think it adds to the excitement of the commentating.
Now regarding Joaqui, I think Marooned was referring to 1995 or 96 when his son Luigi was still playing for the Archers. I think he reacted not only as a La sallite but also as a father when you saw his face. He is human and does his best to be impartial.
As for Ria Tanjuatco, don is right when he says she really does know a lot about basketball but it was her decision to move on. She is still untested though as an analyst on the panel.
Please continue letting us know how to improve and what you like/dislike about the tv coverage. Obviously, makakarating yung mga comments ninyo.
Peace.

I know the topic is "tv coverage" but is there a chance for radio coverage, especially during play-offs? I think guys like me who would be stuck at school, work, or traffic will really appreciate at least hearing the games live. I mean, when La Salle finally won its championship last year, I was still in the office at 1:30 AM! I had to content myself with the replays. That really sucked...

actually the games are being covered by DZSR 918 Sports Radio. However, it is not being covered on a regular basis because the station also covers the MBA games. For more info, contact Caloy Inductivo at the UP Maroons Support Site Board at http://www.peyups.com/upmaroons

a feature on what has happened to former UAAP stars, including those not involved in basketball anymore. jacob's suggestion also - include the year level and course of the player in the stats section while he is taking a free throw. silverstar is doing a great job; sana you have more block time so you can show all the games (including those during weekdays) live.

TO KABOOM! (or mr. jude himself):
KEEP ON USING THAT FAMOUS EXPRESSION! I really don't find it annoying. It sure compliments a player whenever a three-point shot is made. Especially when the person who delivered it watches the replay of his 3-pt shot on PTV 4, he'll surely get motivated and flattered!
Never mind the reaction of atenista91...maybe he gets hurt whenever other uaap players like RITUALO delivers those 3-points during their matches.

About the Trillos' grammar, well. Their grammar is ok, especially Joaqui. We must admit it, even Americans themselves make grammatical errors once in a while when speaking. Maybe Atenista91 would like to take over the post of the Trillos.... :)

Just an opinion on the (new?) roving commentator whose name escapes me at the moment (Is it JC?) I watched the ADMU-UE game on TV yesterday and saw this guy for the first time. His commentating leaves much to be desired, but what bothered me the most was the way he smiled so much. I was half-expecting him to burst out laughing after his report. I'm not saying that he shouldn't smile, but I'm finding it very hard to take him and his report seriously with that 500-megawatt smile of his. Just my $0.02 worth.
Jude and Joaqui's commentating of the game was cool though. I guess it's not hard to maintain that energy level especially when the game is so exciting. Keep it up. :)

I do hope that the weekday coverage time for the UAAP games be moved to a later time so that even the alumni can watch and support their alma maters.

I share gerb's views. If it's a choice of broadcasting the weekday games live or a delayed telecast of the games, I'd go for the delayed (especially if two games are showing). Some of us have to work or study, you know.
To Kaboom!, keep using KABOOM! It's unique and catchy and certainly adds excitement to the already exciting college game.
What's wrong with the Trillos? They certainly know their basketball. Luigi is particularly impressive for one so young. Guess he finally realized his future is in broadcasting.
And about their grammar: C'mon, how could you think about that when the game is going at 100 mph?

Thank you for all your support to Silverstar Sports. We will try our best in bringing you closer to the action. Thank you for all your comments. The production team is working how we can accommodate your suggestions/requests.
It is really a fullfillment for all of us to capture the images on television. To be able to show the emotions and school spirit of each UAAP participant, the all heart passion to win a game or the humble acceptance of a defeat.
All of us have been with the production team for the past nine years. We grew with the UAAP and we are proud to be part of what it is today.
So, hopefully we can continue to cover the UAAP games (including all the other sports) in the future.

Weekday games should be moved to the 6pm timeslot. Alumni support is significantly increasing in the past few years.
I may be asking for too much, but how come Silverstar doesn't have a short pre-game MTV! One thing I enjoy watching in the NBA games are the well-made 30 second pre-game videos. It helps build excitement for the televiewers prior to the great match-ups.
I suggest you use the instrumental portion of TOTO's hit "Supply the Love." Great guitar section.
Kaboom! knows what I'm saying. If you're not familiar with the song, I'll help you find it.
Please don't forget, come up with WELL EDITED videos.
I think you can also consider changing your UAAP graphics. Good for the new millenium.
GOOD LUCK!!

tv coverage?
nice...buti they cover it live pero sayang talaga yung half-time cheers (especially the good ones!). pero sabi nga before, kailangan ng advertising. one question though, wala bang cheerleading contest this year?
trillos? well, people will have to welcome another - carlo. carlo is right now playing for dlsu-juniors (dlsz). will he be playing for dlsu? or will he do something like what his brother did - a move to ateneo? anyone knows?
ey, updates naman sa juniors! =)
HEY Kaboom!!! Nice job here with this UAAP corner. UAAP fans really do have quite a lot to say. First, let me say to "don" that I miss the UAAP like anything but since I was fortunate enough to have certain, hard-to-pass-up career opportunities come my way I had to give it up. I do follow it as much as I can though. The college spirit is one I sorely miss. One thing nice about NOT being on the coverage team though, is that I get to cheer for my school :D
OK, the use of KABOOM is great. That's my opinion. T overuse it would mean to kill the drama it brings to the coverage BUT I think that Jude's doing just fine with it.
As for the Trillos and the negative comments that some of you made about them...remember that it's sooooo easy to criticize people on TV. Before I started broadcasting, I was the NUMERO UNO pintasera but I learned not to knock it till I tried it. You can make fun of any Dodo on TV but I guarantee that you'll stop when you become that Dodo yourself!!
When a game is going so fast, and there's a lot of valuable insight you want to inject while these guys are running back and forth from one end of the court to another, the likelihood is that you will fumble your words and sentences. It is LIVE television so there are no retakes. Cut these guys some slack! They KNOW their basketball like theologians know their scripture.
Jacob, you're absolutely right about Luigi. He has a VERY impressive knowledge of the game. His court sense is what made him a great point guard in his heyday and it's part of what makes him a highly insightful analyst today :D
As for JC and his smiling...YOU try smiling when you're that tense and nervous the first few days on the job.
She wrote back! She wrote back!
Anyway, good luck on your career, Ria. I think it's pretty cool that you really know your stuff and how to say, uh, stuff.

We are glad to know that RI has logged on to the UAAP Forum.
She is greatly missed by everyone in TV production and it had been really difficult to let her go.
But after seeing that RI has greatly succeeded with PBA and MBA, we realized that "Hey, she started with the UAAP." And with that, we can say that we are very proud of her and we wish her more success and happiness.
Moreover, we can attest that she has been (and still is) a very good roving interviewer
and a good friend.
Hope you can watch the games, RI.

Ada, please stop being Miss High and Mighty about that new guy, JC (yes his name is JC). I don't think his smile his anything worth mentioning (except maybe that it's a really nice one). Aren't you really supposed to smile on camera? Ri also had something to say about this and I completely agree with her. Maybe his commentating can be improved, but he is a newcomer after all...
I like the Trillo-Javier tandem during the Ateneo-La Salle games. But would it be too much to ask if the L. Trillo-Turquato duo cover the next ATeneo-La Salle game, just to put a fresher view onthe commentating. Everybody should respect seniority and all pero medyo redundant na yung jokes ni Joaqui and Jimmy.
P.S. Does Kaboom have a girlfriend? :)
Yes Nikita, Kaboom does have a girlfriend ;)

as for sarcasm that i replace the trillos and try to do their job, no thanks. i do believe that their basketball insights are very good. the fast pace of the game though should be no excuse for poor english. why force its use when you can't speak it properly. mag-tagalog na lang sila di ba? i have many la sallite friends who speak flawless english and i have many atenean friends who speak it poorly. but considering that they are so proud of their la sallite heritage, i wonder how the academic faculty of la salle feel when they see their alumni have a very poor grasp of english on nationwide tv. guys, if you want a career in broadcasting, brush up on your grammar. remember the flak vintage analyst andy jao got when he promounced Kukoc as kookok. nothing ruins a good coverage than mis-pronounced words/names and/or grammatical mistakes.

To everyone:
Thanks for all your comments again! We're getting almost 500 hits a day on this site already and we're only about 10 days old! I think a lot of people also log on who don't register.
To atenista91, like the old adage says "you can please some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but not all the people all the time". I do my best and try to make the tv audience feel as if they're watching live.
To Ri, thanks for being part of this forum, it certainly adds to the credibility of the site having broadcasters who cover the games first hand give their opinions. I hope more can join in so we can have even more fun.
To Nikita, as Ri mentioned, I do have a girlfriend and so does that other guy JC. You might want to ask my partner, Mr. LT_10 though, he seems a little more inspired than usual these days.
With JC, in my opinion, he's doing a better job right now in his first year than me or Luigi (no offense to LT) did our first years. Keep it up JC.
To AirHare, we'll try to have those 30 second TV teasers for all the big games from now on.
With regard to covering ADMU-DLSU games, it's not my decision and I'm willing to wait out my turn in the scheme of things.
And one more thing, since it's been raining so much lately and classes have been suspended, the UP-ADMU and DLSU-FEU game Wednesday has been postponed.
Peace.

Hey Mr Kaboom! Great UAAP Forum you've got going here. I think this site can get the followers of the UAAP involved and allow them to voice out their personal views on different topics.Congratulations to everyone involved!! ( Jude, the UAAP, Silverstar, the Fans and Friends.)
I noticed some people have already voiced out their opinion on the way we cover the games. I agree with my partner (Mr. KABOOM) that you cannot please everbody all the time.I have had my share of criticism in all the different fields i've ventured into. Whether in business or as a player, coach, basketball analyst, camp founder and commissioner. To me it is not about what people say, it's how you deal with it. I have always kept an open mind in everything i've done. I welcome the advice. Comments like this should only motivate us (the Panel) to try harder.
To Jacob and the Green Archer, who have given their sentiments and are pleased with the coverage, thank a whole bunch. Nothing can be as gratifying for us when people appreciate the hard work we have put into our jobs.
On the La Salle-Ateneo game, hmmm that would be really cool. Although i do not mind waiting my turn. Just to be in the company of guys like Jimmy, Jude and my dad is really something.I think Ella and JC are doing a tremendous job. I also have to compliment the staff of Silverstar. As a spectator of all the UAAP basketball games, it would definitely be interesting if Jude and Luigi do the next LaSalle-Ateneo game. We'll still have the same banter since both are from opposing schools, and they were both once on their school teams(however Jude was only on the training team). Their enthusiasm and youth will definitely add spark to this coverage.
gDawal: I've seen Silverstar's coverage of UAAP volleyball, soccer, swimming and track & field. Perhaps you missed it bec. the airtime was not a popular slot.
Kaboom!
Aug 3, 1999, 09:36 AM
to gDawal: Silverstar does televise the other sports but only the championships unlike basketball. As you know, it costs money to get a tv crew and buy airtime. The sponsors aren't willing to pay for the other sports unless it's the finals. In fact, some of the others sports come in a package deal along with the basketball games just so they can be televised. Soccer, volleyball, taekwondo, track & field, swimming, are just some of the sports that have been covered. The Angels actually do a very good job in keeping track of the other sports so they can be shown on TV.
For the "Ask Jude" thing, maybe just start another topic and I'll do my best to answer some of the questions. My colleages are actually more knowledgable than I am when it comes to the UAAP since I've only been coverting since 1995.
But since other members of Silverstar are also part of this forum, maybe we can just start a topic "Questions for Silverstar" and one of us will do our best to answer.
Peace.
