I just wanted to congratulate the UP Law Debate Team for winning this year's Asian Debate Championship held at the College of St. Benilde, DLSU just this past week.

This means that, of the 8 Asian Debate Championships ever held, the Philippines has won half. Not a bad record, if I do say so myself. :)

Hmmm... :) I might start to show my age here...

Well, I actually only know three of the four semi-finalists as of the moment. The team that finished runner-up was from the International Islamic University (IIU) of Malaysia. One of the other semi-finalists was Ateneo, and I confess I don't know who UP Law faced in the other semi. IIU defeated Ateneo to meet UP.

As for past winners, I only remember with clarity the first three.

1st Asians - Ateneo
2nd Asians - UKM (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaya) from Malaysia
3rd Asians - IIU
4th Asians - UST ?
5th Asians - IIU ?
6th Asians - UST ?
7th Asians - National University of Singapore (I think...) ?
8th Asians - UP Law

I'm not sure I got the order of the 4th to the 6th right, but I do know that UST won it twice around that time, and IIU won it as well. That's about it for "clarity."

I'll find out the real score and post it ASAP.

Ok, I got it now. :)

All of the champions I listed above were in the correct order. :) How's that for old people, eh?

Here's the full list, with runners-up included:

1st Asians - Ateneo (runner-up: IIU)
2nd Asians - UKM (runner-up: UST)
3rd Asians - IIU team 1 (runner-up: IIU team 2)
4th Asians - UST (runner-up: UP Diliman)
5th Asians - IIU (runner-up: Nat'l Uni. of Singapore a.k.a. NUS)
6th Asians - UST (runner-up: IIU)
7th Asians - NUS (runner-up: Nanyang Tech. of Singapore)
8th Asians - UP Law (runner-up: IIU)

As you can see, the most successful school has been IIU, with two championships and FOUR runner-up finishes. Next up is UST (the most successful Philippine school) with two championships and one runner-up finish.

As for countries, the Philippines has four champions, followed by Malaysia with three and Singapore with one. :)

:wow:congrats!

i saw the debaters from DLSU-main and they hold a lot of promise talaga! pero debaters from ateneo,UP,and UST are really QUALITY!anong nagyari doon sa champion team from ateneo law,and ateneo undergrad.???i was hoping that if not LaSalle-main,or UST Law eh they can reach the finals? anong nangyari??

when we were watching the tournament the debaters from other countries were all keeping a close watch of debaters from UST(two time Champions),and Ateneo Law and Undergrads, during the match nga we saw how some teams were intimidated with the presence of Ateneo and UST,LaSalle was doing well in the prelims pero they did'nt quite made it eh!(there's always the next time naman di ba!)

congrats talaga!...

congratulations to UP for pulling off that victory. honestly, i think the malaysian team won the final. i could see why UP won it, but i think the malaysian team was on balance, a stronger and more analytical team.

i think UP won by being very good at complaining and nitpicking, which are not bad things. but the burdens between the malaysian team and up were just unequal, the burden on the former being a lot heavier. the intl islamic team had to conceptualize a comprehensive model for an asean parliament and all UP had to do was complain about the model and cast doubt on its viability. lo and behold, the strategy worked.

also, congratulations to ateneo de davao and university of st.la salle-bacolod for breaking into the top 16 despite being relatively new in the asians circuit. ateneo did well but eventually succumbed in the semis to what i think was, by far, the strongest team in the asians - iiu. la salle also performed well but was knocked out by UP in the quarterfinals in what i heard was a controversial split decision. UST, as always, had a strong showing but was ambushed somewhere along the way. too bad i didn't get to watch franco larcina, the tournament's best speaker, debate.

to csb, great hosting guys. honestly, i really didn't think you would be able to pull it off with the little time that you had. the food during the prelims could've been improved but overall, the hosting was smooth and the cultural night and championsip dinner were magnificent!

i am so proud of the debaters from up law. i knew arnel and diane from our undergrad years. arnel joined up debsoc in 1995, and diane joined in 1996, i think.
