do you now get paid for what you have paid for in college?
do you now realize the "edge" of graduating in a prestigious
univ over other univ grads in terms of getting the work, the pay, and the environment you want?
let it out! ;)

Well, I just realized that the name of the school really counts. Getting a diploma from the said universities definitely give you an edge, however once you are accepted your main goal is to deliver to the standards imposed on you. Companies do really give high credits to the graduates of these schools but they do really expect so much. That's why if you fail to live up to the standards set, it's a major turn off to your school.
Another observation is that, graduates of ATENEO and DE LA SALLE do really get along very well. It was something that I thought would never happen back in school.

I agree: I found it easier to get a job simply because I graduated from La Salle.
The flip side of the coin, however, is that though you may find it easier to get into a job, it may also be harder for you to KEEP your job. Coming from a university such as La Salle, the expectations in terms of performance and deliverables are naturally higher.

i agree with gobbledygook and chad!
you can get in easily but the expectations are high, its just like what ive said before, these schools can give you great opportunities but once you're inside a company, you cant rely on your school anymore, you have to work hard just like the others.
compensation and benefits are gooooood! hehehe!
environment?! lots of expectations. but its really just part of the job! my officemates are friendly although it really depends on what company you go into.
:D
bittersweet_hun,
i hope you dont mind me asking but, why do you ask?!

the 'edge' or so you say, that comes with graduating from schools such as ateneo, UP and la salle comes in the form of intangibles such as prestige, connections, preferred work offers and not necessarily the pay itself.
for me, graduating from ateneo is worth all the expense that my parents paid for my four-year stay there. i got the school's prestige, the myriad of connections, preferred work offers in my field and quality education to boot.
but like what the others said, your school, like your resume, can only open doors for you. It doesn't automatically land you in a job just because you're an atenean or a lasallian or whatever. fortunately for this country, most of the opportunities are still based on merit. its up to you to stay and excel on that particular job.

jopert, i was just wondering how u guys feel abt that. anyway, i came from one of those schools. i landed on a high paying job, tied up with a multi national IT firm. got no complaints regarding the pay. but the environment - oh my! hell... it was like the dominating specie in my office are Jolinians (grads of AMA). and they hate people from borgoise schools. i wouldn't have cared much abt them if they just wouldn't care abt me. but they bother themselves too much abt me... you know, office politics and stuff.
i quitted. am bound to return to manila on june. so have to start searching for a good job again. hope i would get a nice environment this time!
and gobble... u said grads of ATENEO and DLSU tag along well. just wondering... are u trying to imply grads of CSB doesn't?

Of course not. It's just that, students of both schools seemed to have this grudge against one another and with the school spirit and everything, students of these schools do nothing but compete. Well, fortunately everything changes as you venture to the real world. CSB is synonymous with La Salle right? Therefore we don't have a prob on that.

The "edge hasn't worked so far for this DLSU grad... :(
I guess it would only work if you've got a GPA of at least 2.00 (mine was 1.90 upon graduation) and have attended quite a few seminars (I only attended if I was running out of cuts and attendance was required)...

I study in DLSU and haven't worked yet, as I am in my 4th year, but I did have practicum for 720 hours (5 months)...yes they do expect a lot...
as for that "edge", I think all graduates of the school's mentioned have it...but they can lose it if they don't do good. They also have to work to maximize that "edge".
It's a reality that big companies look for grads from DLSU/ADMU/UP. My aunt works at a big company and you know what? they sort resumes...grouping them accdg to "DLSU/ADMU/UP" and "others". It's a sad reality, fortunately I won't be affected. Quite unfair dba? Paano naman yung grads from other schools that have potential?
Well it's an advantage for me if they sort it that way, so i have really no big qualms....

My aunt is working for a really big company here. They only accept graduates from DLSU, UP and ADMU. Kasi daw they don't want mediocre people in the office. Paano naman yung magagaling from other schools diba? Unfair diba?

well.... yeah, it's indeed unfair. but that's the way it goes... those belonging to the higher echelon gets better chances.
but as like some peeps there have mentioned... your alma mater is not all you can hold on to. even if you;re from these prestigious univs, if u dont keep up, u'll be a dud for life.
same goes to those from the other univs - use your "other" strengths to make it up to the top of the ladder!
stay cool!
