i just made probably the biggest and toughest decision in my life...nag-enroll ako sa UP Dili instead of La Salle taft!:confused2:
hindi ko actually inisip na dito ako papasok kasi all my life, akala ko sa la salle na talaga ako mapapadpad kasi mahal na mahal ko talaga ang la salle system (naks). for 13 years, nag-aral ako sa zobel kaya akala ko hanggang college, magiging green-blooded ako. pero hindi pala.:bawl: im going to take up medicine kasi kaya i decided to go to UP instead kasi mas makakakuha daw ako ng magandang preparation for med proper. but the problem is, will i be as happy in UP Dili as i know i would have been in la salle?:shedtears: feedback naman o! plus, may mga guapo ba sa UP to help me make it through the 4 years of study???
 syempre kailangan ko ng sustainance diba?:*)

ey! i know exactly how you feel! sobrang namroblema rin ako nung nag-decide ako between up dil and ateneo. my entire family has been pushing me to go to ateneo (despite the fact that my parents are both from UP)....for a time, I thought that they were right, and that ateneo IS the place for me.
But here I am...an incoming froshie sa UP (BA Broadcomm)
labo noh?
hayy...
na-convince kasi ako nung mga tao na nagsasabi na ang UP pa rin ang univ na standard of excellence sa Phils...tapos dito mo talaga ma-eexperience yung "real world" kse lahat ng uri ng tao makakasama mo dito...
newayz, since premed gusto mo, i think you made the right choice. La Salle is more of a business oriented school...btw, ano yung pre-med course mo?
about cute guys...hehe...i asked about that din...sabi sa aki wait and see na lang daw!

i'm taking up BS Bio.
actually, a lot of my friends also told me the same thing...mas tatanggapin ka daw sa mga jobs(especially pag nag-apply ka sa states) pag galing ka from UP kasi nga state university yun. atsaka mas masaya daw kasi matututo ka ng lahat ng bagay na kakailanganin in order to survive the "real world", like pagsakay sa jeep(IKOT/TOKI), pagiging activist (hehe! joke lang!)...
and another thing that made me decide to go to UP was because walang pasok every wednesday...:D
kaso lang the thing i regret about not going to la salle was nandon lahat ng barkada ko, including my best friend...:unhappy:

what are the courses of your friends in UP? maybe they'll be my classmates in some of my classes in the future.:)
yup, nakapagregister na ako. hassle nga yung med exam eh. mas matagal pa ako naghintay sa infirmary kaysa actual enrollment mismo.
mahirap kasi mahiwalay sa barkada ko kasi we all belong to the same sport, kaya pagdating ng UAAP, its me versus them. ang problema, ako lang mag-isa sa UP...wawa naman ako.:weep:
about my sked, ok naman. hanggang 1pm ako every mon and thurs, then 4pm every tues and fri. wala masyadong gaps between classes, except for lunch breaks. plus, i dont have to attend PE class.

Hey you guys! You don't have to worry about a thing. I don't see why you should be worried. Lahat naman na kasama niyo Freshmen. Lahat kayo mag-aadjust. Lahat kayo naninibago. Equal footing lang kayong lahat. Don't get to overwhelmed. Take it from me. It's no big deal.*okay* College life is what you make out of it. It is you who make it easy or hard, fun or boring, depending on what you decide to do. It's just like high school with more responsibilities that is.
Good luck, God bless and don't forget to have fun! Especially in Diliman!

It's really up to you whether you choose to enjoy your stay in UP Diliman. That's not a generic, goody-two-shoes answer, that's just the way it is in the Diliman campus. I also took my premed in Diliman, and I was the only one from my high school who got in a UPD premed course--all my other friends were in either UP-Manila or in other non-UP schools. I thought at first that I wasn't going to enjoy my college life as much as I did my high school, but I took the initiative of joining organizations and basically socializing with premed as well as non-premed people and attending lots of parties and activities. I also learned how to take the Ikot jeep, as well as how to be a lot more street-smart. :D My UPD life turned out to be a real blast, and I learned so much more academically as well as non-academically than I would have learned had I stayed in a private religious college. *okay* However, if you choose to sulk over the fact that your friends aren't in UP and you remain "antisocial", then it will be hell on earth, because no one is going to go out of his way to make your life easier. Happiness, after all, doesn't end when you graduate high school. While you may lose some high school friends over time, you'll surely gain new ones in UP.
Oh, and while the concentration of physically attractive guys are less in UP, there are still A LOT of them there, mostly in the CBA, SEcon, and in the AS Lobby. :) Bad news, though: Going by tradition, there are only a few cute guys in premed. :glee:

i've been to both schools...
UP is the real world...
LaSalle is more like the ideal world...
Ateneo is out of this world hehe biro lang...
ok ganito lang yan eh...
la salle = quality education, great facilities, high tuition, bihira ang concerts, class A B students, straight road towards education, masikip (puros building)
UP = quality education, poor facilities, affordable tuition, linggo linggo may concerts, class A B C D students, lots of side-roads toward education, maluwang (maraming puno)
there's really no comparison. both schools are great!
may difference lang nga sa crowd, pero lahat ng mga isko at lasalistang kilala ko mga totoo! parehong lasengero at may sense kung magsalita.
"will i be as happy in UP Dili as i know i would have been in la salle?" you just have to wait 4 years and find out... your experience in UP will tell you if you've made the right choice. but the truth is, wala sa eskuwelahan yan, nasa tao na yan kung sasaya siya sa school niya o hindi. ;)
basta yun, minsan lang ako mapadpad sa pex... e-mail mo lang ako kung may karagdagang tanong ka pa about UP o DLSU ;)

Believe me that I had made that same tough decision years before. I'm from Zobel too and I only applied to DLSU or UP Diliman. In the end I chose to enroll in UP. I have never regretted my decision.
If after 4 years you look back and realize that you made a wrong decision, then something major is wrong. It's very improbable going to UP Diliman and NOT enjoying it.
As for the good-looking guys... I think the population density in Diliman is a bit low compared to Loyola Heights and Ermita, but that even makes it more interesting... para kang makakakita ng artista! Hehehe. :D

It's what you do with your decision...
You decided to study in UP but if you continue to pine for DLSU or think of the What might have beens...it's useless.
Being in UP is probably the best thing that could happen in a person's life. I am not biased or anything pero UP gives you the kind of open ended education that gives all the students a certain amount of freedom to pursue what, how they will learn.
You will realize that most of the valuable things you'd learn while in UP are the ones you would learn outside the classroom...pag nakikisalimuha ka sa mga classmates mo, sa mga manong at manang, prof, mga tambay sa kanto. Iba talaga.
BTW..

here, something i've just read from the inquirer... today's youngblood... la lang
Why Sachi should go to UP
By Herdy L. Yumul
DEAR Kuya Henry,
Allow me write this letter to you--a first in many years--as you exert influence on one of the most important decisions in the life of our beloved Sachi.
I have known that after a careful assessment, you have decided to send Sachi to Saint Louis University in Baguio for college. While I receive this news with utmost respect, let me air my dissent and give you my thoughts on it.
I believe that SLU is a good school but I wish Sachi could go to the University of the Philippines because there, Sachi will grow among the best and the brightest, the future movers and shakers of our country. In UP, sure to open before Sachi’s eyes are doors of opportunities that graduates of lesser schools can only dream of. But above all, in UP, Sachi would continue to be the best, the brightest and the most promising person that she is by nature.
If Sachi were just a mediocre student, I wouldn’t care. But we know that she is far from ordinary. She has the skills and the attitude typical of those who make it "big time."
Some of our relatives commented that it wouldn’t matter much where Sachi would go to college. She could go abroad and earn precious dollars, anyway. But if that is the case, we should as well let her go to a school in Timbuktu and the old American patient in San Diego she would nurse in the future would never mind.
Not infrequently, going abroad is a desperate move. It is an open acceptance of one’s failure to succeed in one’s own country. Overseas Filipino workers are not heroes all the time. Sometimes they are victims of poverty, if not of greed.
It is in this light that we admire Mommy and Daddy because they were able to raise us with success. They may have not set foot in college but their hard work, discipline and business acumen paved the way for them. They made a mark without a college diploma and without having to leave us to earn money elsewhere.
But Sachi wants to be a physician. Because entrusted in a doctor’s hands are lives of human beings, academic training is of primary consideration. Dr. Benjie Flor (Daddy’s cardiologist) knows that very well and so he went to UP for college. He also had the chance to go abroad, not to battle against time for green money, but to further his expertise. Now, Dr. Flor serves his Mother Ilocos by being a good and trusted professional. And his job pays him well.
I am both amused and saddened by the irony of it all: many parents break their bones just to send their children to Manila for better education. Not few of them do not mind if their kids go to the so-called "diploma mills" where degrees are gained without much pain. There are so many schools of that kind, many of them are in Recto. But to many parents, it really does not matter, basta mapag-aral lang sa Manila, okay na.
Here we have Sachi, admitted to the premier institution of learning in this country. And we do not send her to UP? Many Upcat passers tender parties to celebrate their victory, their having won the key to their dreams. And on the bleak side, I have also heard of some young people claim their lives upon receiving the kind of "thank you but you did not make it" letter sent by the university. And we dismiss Sachi’s chance to go to UP with such ease?
I hope to make you realize that this humble request is born neither of caprice nor of boastfulness. This is born out of ambition and concern for our beloved Sachi.
I remember very well when I was about to go to college. Almost everybody did not want me to go to Manila. But Mommy was there and I will forever be thankful to her. Together, "Inkgidem mi iti panagbasak (we just closed our eyes and went on against all odds)." In the same manner, let us transcend the present and on to the future.
Opportunities like these knock but once.
Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago once said that non-UP graduates belong to "lower life forms," like insects. While we are much aware that the lady senator is really out of her wits most of the time, it is, to some extent, reflective of how society looks at graduates of UP and other top schools. It might be unfair, yes. But it is impossible to change the world in a few years when Sachi graduates from college.
Several times, I have heard personnel managers say that they do not even bother to glance at the resumés of graduates who are not graduates of top schools. Their papers are a regular visitor of the wastebasket. This practice may sound unfair but not totally irrational. Ateneans, La Sallians, Bedans, UP graduates and alumni of other equally reputable schools often need less training and are generally more competitive. Companies invest in them. And so, a UP Diliman diploma is a VIP passport that is recognized by every Filipino in any point and corner of the world.
One does not have to be an academician to realize that when you are a graduate of a top school, you do not have much proving to do. And true enough, we do not always have the opportunity to present our collegiate achievements to other people. Sachi will not always be able to tell her patients that she enjoyed a scholarship in SLU or that she was awarded 12 medals when she graduated there. But If people know that you are a graduate of UP (no matter if you finished last and spent seven years to complete your four-year course), the assumption is that you are excellent, a cut above the rest.
You bear the indelible mark of greatness.
It is thus no wonder why the other honor graduates of Sachi’s class, from rank No. 2 to rank No. 7 are raring to go to UP. And after 25 years, when they meet again in their class reunion, how will our dear Sachi, their valedictorian, fare?
Looking at your concerns, I know how concerned you are for Sachi’s safety and that financial concerns are carefully considered.
On the question of safety, we do not deny the risks. But if only to ease your worries, let me tell you, thousands and thousands of little probinsiyanas, like our dear Sachi (like Miriam then), flock to UP every year. With faith in God and in themselves, they emerge victorious! Many of them are my friends. We know very well that one does not have to go to Manila to encounter danger. Dangers and risks are eminent in Baguio too, even in Laoag.
As to monetary considerations, a UP education is a most profitable investment. Did you know that government subsidizes almost P50,000 for the education of every UP student every semester? Sending Sachi to Manila would mean a pocket less full, or even empty. But the money is never put to waste. Every centavo is an investment to Sachi’s character. From my humble means, I also offer to help Sachi in her finances if she goes to Manila for college.
A few weeks ago our family rejoiced because of Sachi’s feat. She graduated valedictorian in the only science high school in Ilocos Norte. I hope we do not reward her by depriving her of the education she deserves.
To those who were given more, more will be expected. I pray that we present the treasure of a UP education so she could well serve God and country in the measure becoming of her.
I hope I did not sound antagonizing as I presented my views. My chest suddenly became heavy when Sachi told me that a decision has been made. I hope the decision is not irrevocable so that the feelings of grief and great loss--for the Sachi that should be--will leave me soon.
I never wanted to interfere with your affairs and so I always called Sachi to ask her to talk it over with you. But because she is a really good and understanding daughter, she could not demand too much. She pretends not to have any regrets but her voice says something and I am bothered. Before it’s late, please accept my last-ditch appeal.

i agree to what Doc Ira said.. it will not be the people around you who will make or break your life in Diliman, it will be you and you alone who must take on that responsibility. join orgs and enjoy...
taking your education in diliman means a lot of things for you, it will be missing the good looking poeple of DLSU and since you'd be taking up bio you'd be hard pressed looking for a fafa..
and to welcome you to up diliman..
one more thing: there are non-quota courses that are a major pain in the ***...

"sasaya ba ako sa UP Dili? "
And oh, on a more mundane level, to echo the posts before this, yeah, you will have fun in UP Dil.

ChLoRiNe, good choice of school and premed course! (biased ako kasi UP BS Bio ako eh :D). Anyway, I'm in med now and being a Bio grad helped me in some courses, like dreaded Biochemistry.
About Bio in UP, it's ok. There are pretty hard subjects and teachers have their peculiarities but I was happy in this course.
P.S: Chances are your teacher in Bio 11 is a co-graduate of mine...behave ha! :D

We only go to College once in our lives. Attending U.P. will surely make you experience the best, the worst, the highs, the lows, the crests and the troughs of life. Everything about experiencing real life, talagang ma-e-encounter mo sa U.P.
I also agree that a U.P. pedigree is a veritable VIP card that will be with you forever in life.
Congratulations! You've made a wise decision in choosing U.P.

Hi! Too bad, ngayon ko lang nakita post mo. Ngayon lang ako uli nakabalik sa PEX. Sana mabasa mo pa rin 'to.
Welcome, future IB (Inst. of Bio.) denizen! Kakagraduate ko lang this April (BS Bio rin). Naks! You WILL enjoy UP Dil, especially the IB experience.
Your ultimate goal will eventually define the level of "toxicity" of your college life. It's a given that you'll have to work a bit harder if your end goal is med at UP-PGH as girls have to have higher grades than boys to get accepted there (that's why the UPD BS Psych gals have an edge over the Bio majors). Admission to other med schools like UST, UERM, PLM, FEU, St. Luke's etc. is practically guaranteed.
Bio is the perfect place for you if you actually like the subject matter (you'll have to take lots of Bio subjects that aren't med-related like plant physiology and the dreaded ecology (Bio 160)). It's not a large institute (ranging from 50-70 people per batch) so you'll get to know your blockmates pretty well.
Maasikaso rin ang mga teachers (for the most part). Pwede mo silang chikahin, lalo na ang ma-intrigang junior faculty. Don't cry kung nasigawan ka ni Prof. Roderos 'pag registration, ganun talaga yun.
First year of college is nothing. It's the perfect opportunity to kick back and experience UP Diliman (like eating at a different kainan everyday, playing pusoy dos sa sunken garden with your barkada, joining an org (sali kang ABM, ha? <nag-plug daw ba>, etc.) You won't even feel like you're a Bio major. You'll start feeling that way 2nd sem of 2nd year (pag nakatira ka na halos sa IB). Math 17 is not that hard either. You'll have to REALLY look out for Chem 31, Math 53 and 54, Physics 72, and your majors.
Cute guys and UP aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. I don't know about your batch but Bio seems to attract the smart serious types (mag-mmed kasi). May cute nga na instructor eh (Hi Sir Ian! :blush2: ). Don't limit yourself to those na ka-course mo. Cute guys have been sighted sa GE and PE courses (naging bf ng friend ko taga-Civil Eng'g dahil nag-share sila ng tent nung camping) as well as in different orgs.
Grabe! Sorry for the drawn-out ramblings. Ganyan talaga pag matanda na ang nag-rereminisce na lang (miss ko na tuloy ang pagiging undergrad!). Just wanted to wish you the best of luck. ENJOY! There's nothing in the world quite like UP Diliman. :sunny:

oo naman! i had the time of my life in up. (drama ba?) although masaya nung hs, i'd say na mas enjoy yung college life ko because of up.
so if i were you, i think you should brace yourself for a new life in up. try joining an org para may kasama ka na gumimik, may katulong ka pa sa mga homework mo. you have all the freedom in up so you should be responsible in handling yourself because many people get dismissed from the univ not because they're unintelligent but because of poor performance. they get carried away sa sobrang freedom kaya napapabayaan ang studies.
guys? hmnn, see for yourself na lang! :beam:

This thread brought back memories... Three years ago, I was crying my heart out because my parents enrolledme in UP Diliman, instead of sending me to LaSalle.
Nakaka-overwhelm talaga ang UP,not to mention culture shock. Ang dami pang pressures, harassment sa acads andsa pagko-commute. But then, you'll get by. Then you'll realize na nag-eenjoy ka rin pala. You'll get to know different people from different walks of life. Meron diyang sobrang maarte na akalamo nde kumakain ng fishballs, meron namang mga low profiles lang, meron ding mga weirdo, merong normal lang. Hehehe. Ang maganda dun, you'll get to deal with different people.
After three years of being in UP (Diliman),I have no regrets. I'm having quality education and at the same time, mababa ang tuition (wag niyo na lang pansinin ang facilities, usable pa naman silang lahat eh). I got to see the "real world" sa UP. I realized kung gaano ako ka-ignorante when I was still in high school. And of course, I gained so many friends, true friends, sa UP. :wave:z @ uptowngirl
chlorine and the others, you don't have to worry a thing. Tama din sila na nasa person naman yun eh. Try to balance your time. See to it na kahit nag-aaral ka, nage-enjoy ka din at the same time. Try to involve yourselves sa mga organizations. It will help practice how to be responsible, gain friends, and better yet, find the love of your lives. Diba uptowngirl? :naughty:
disturbed_erick, Comp Eng'g ka? What block? Yung org kasi namin may iha-handle na freshman block for the FOPC eh...

But of course!!!! It's the real college world. You'll see people clad in simple clothing, walking, riding the jeepney(and a lot come in their vehicles, too). It's a great school. But honey, your happiness really depends on you. It's how you make your college life a blast. No one can do that for you. Your family and friends are there only to suppport you along the way. The decision is still yours. A happy disposition keeps you going indeed!
Goodluck and have a splendid stay at UP Diliman!

Walang kuwenta ang la salle (taft, i mean) iba ang college life sa diliman. ito lang ang totoong university. para ka ring nasa highschool when you go to la salle. You will be ok, don`t worry. parang nakakatakot lang at first ang diliman. the person who persuaded you to go to diliman, naku malilibre ko sya ng lunch. at pasalamat ka pinilit ka nya. up is the best. at tama ka, up can offer you the best pre-med.
well, see you na lang in UP. believe, in no time, you will be enjoying yourself. goodluck

i encountered the same problem several yrs ago. dapat, ust pt talaga ang kukunin ko for college, but i eventually went to up diliman. regrets? wala. it was one of the best decisions i've ever made. :)
iba ang up sa ibang schools, in the sense na makakahalubilo mo halos lahat ng klase ng tao. and later on, mare realize mo na malaking edge yun.
i'm currently in med school, and while, sometimes, naiisip ko na sana, nag- pt na lang ako, (dahil sila ang pnaka me- edge sa medschool, in my opinion) nde ko rin nire regret na i went to up diliman. marami ka kasing matututunan na nde mo siguro matututunan kung nasa ibang school ka.
as for the cute guys, sa experience ko, marami rami rin naman, sa eng'g. pero, i doubt kung ganun pa rin ngayon dahil, shempre, kasabay ko sila gumraduate. hehehe! :teehee:
gudluck sa mga papasok sa up! make the most out of your college life! :)

I do not regret a single day I spent in UP. It's where you'll get to meet real people. Make the most of your stay there. Join orgs, meet new people, watch the Oblation Run :D, try the barbecue at Beach House, try walking from AS to Math Bldg ;D Check out the ladies' CR on the first floor of AS - ang pinaka-naiibang CR sa lahat, may natutulog, may nagtitinda, may nag-aaral...
One thing you shouldn't forget though is that as an Iskolar ng Bayan, you owe it to the Filipino people to give something back be it in any form.
You'll see that the years spent in UP could qualify as part of the best years of your life.

sayang, ngayon ko lang nakita thread na ito.
well, it seems that every UP grad loved the experience and education only UP can give. There's something unique in every university but if you want to feel prepared and more grounded, UP should be your choice.
I just like everything about UP Diliman. Even the pila (prepares you for every government agency in the country). My best friend and i wanted to go back and take our masters but she's the only one who made it because i forgot how challenging it is to get instructions from UP admin on how to register, especially if you don't know what to do.
Hay, ka-miss pa rin. my friends and i have a ritual every other month, meet somewhere in UP Diliman, (Sarah's, BeachHouse, Green house, CASAA, Sunken Garden, Molave, Kalayaan, at marami pang iba)
for the freshmen, don't be too serious, but don't stay too long din sa UP. Have fun, stay sa dorms, meet diff kinds of people, kain sa mga karinderia, attend the concerts and activities, join a rally, experience everything UP Diliman has to offer. Trust those who came before you, you won't regret it.
Sayang ulit, there was UP EB pala yesterday. It would be nice to reminisce about how fun a UP education can be...

Education in UP Diliman means that you will not be spoon fed. It is your responsibility to study or screw up. UP Diliman opens your eyes to the realities of life, that some of the parents put their children to school with their blood, sweat and tears literally. You will not be anymore in the cocooned world of DLSU where people dress nicely and cleanly.
Planning to take up Medicine then going to the US? Everybody's dream of going to UP Med using government money (actually workers and employees hard earned money, the rich do not pay that much) to cure American citizens. Open your eyes....

It depends on what you see as "masaya", you know. I'm in my 4th year of BA Political Science in UP; so far, there has been heaven and hell in what I've gone through. Heaven in the freedom to behave however you want to behave--as long as you don't break any national laws. Hell in enlistment (mwahaha--freshies beware! :D).
It's not a question of whether or not you'll be happier in UP Diliman than in La Salle Taft. It's a question of whether or not you will make it enjoyable for yourself. Kick back, enjoy the ride.

kumpleto ang buhay sa UP. and the more wonderful thing about life in UP is you learn to be self-reliant. walang pamilyang matatkbuhan kaya matuto kang makipagkaibigan. hindi pampered ang estudyante kaya matuto kang maging maparaan sa pag-aaral. dalawa lamang ang klase ng estudyante sa UP ang matalino at maabilidad. kung di ka matalino dapat maabilidad ka. kung anong paraan, that's ur choice...
marami ring oportunidada para mapayabong ang sarili. but whether you will take fulll adavantage of these opportunities eh is up to you. bagama't hindi biro ang buhay UP, hindi naman kailangang kunot ang noo. kalingan lang ng determinasyon at pagpaplano...
that's why planning and foresight are important--these are the first steps toward attaining your goals, mission and vision, para pagkatapos ng lahat ng tawa at iyak, pagkatapos ng lahat ng binunong desisyon, sa dulo't dulo'y graduate ka pa rin ng UP. so make the whole year productive, exciting and worth the while...

sasaya ka ba sa up dil? ***** dats wer I spent the best days of my life! di lang diliman sa uplb din! man if you went to la salle you could've spent the most boring three years of your life with the same mode of thinking as you did in high school. i studied in ateneo all my life and i'm glad by some plan of god i ended up in UP! of course die hard ateneo pa rin ako pag dating sa basketbol, pero ***** i won't be who i am now if it weren't for up.
in up they don't feed you cr*p, walang spoon feeding don bahala ka sa buhay mo. yung mga feeling na culture shock elitist (kuno) b*llsh*t yon. saka hindi totoo na tibak lahat ng mga tao don, although you slowly come to realize what this nation is all about.
it's all up to you if you're gonna have fun, although the potential to really have a good time is big.
if you notice, all the great minds seem to come from up. why? i don't know, it's probably the environment of free thinking which seems to spawn enlightened thinking with a firm grasp of reality!
sa up, walang "down from the hill" thinking don. bulok nga facilities, mukhang luma lahat, ang hirap kumuha ng subject, but don't worry, all the great minds choose to teach in up and i assure you, up is the best "mistake" you ever made.
