Reading L. Dalby's "The Tale of Murasaki" got me into a feverish search for Genji. Problem is I don't think it's available here. At least, not at NBS. Anybody know where I can pick up a complete copy?

Has anyone read this novel? And if so, whose translation would you recommend? My recent online forays have narrowed it down to 2: E. Seidenpicker & A. Waley. But I want your opinions too. :)

Thanks!

the only time i got to read excerpts of genji was during my japanese art class in college. my teacher just gave away handouts. you may want to contact the art studies department of up diliman and check if they know where to find a copy of genji. i forget the name of my teacher as of the moment... sorry. hope this helps.

I found a copy at La Solidaridad over at Padre Faura.
It's not the complete version which has 54 chapters. this edition, Vintage, trans. by Seidensticker has only 12 chapters. Waley's translation of the original is SIX VOLUMES long.

You're looking for the complete story of Genji? As in the one written by the lady Murasaki?

As far as I know, you can't find a real complete copy that's commercially available.

:silly:

NBS have (I believe) available copies though quite rare.

I suggest you scout for the second hand copy in some never heard of bookstores --- try along Recto.

Ang stupid ko, I thought The Tale of the Genji is two different books with two different authors.

Anyway at first we were required to read it in school when we were in Second year high school. Our teacher specified EDWARD SEIDENSTICKER Konti lang ang nakahanap ng copy so we switched to "Night" by Elie Weisel. But I bought one anyway in Borders I haven't read it yet but I scanned it and I love some of the drawings.

What's the fuss ba talaga with this book? I'm kinda stupid when it comes to lit :confused3:

I really hope the plans for a Barnes and Nobles or a Borders here in the Philippines will push through!:scream:

naaaw, it ain't stupid. i probably didn't make it all that clear in the first place. when i was asking for it at nbs, i could practically see the question mark over the customer representative's head. :D

what's "night" about? and where is borders? now, i think i'm the one being stupid. :p

genji is hailed as the most popular of all the literary works in Japan, is why. and he's something like an eastern casanova, as close to perfection as one can get too. :) i think i read somewhere that it is the world's 1st novel..? written in the 11th century by lady murasaki. it even got turned into anime in the 80s. :)

that'd be cool. sure beats having to order online!

Borders in San Francisco near Union Square and the one in LA near Del Amo Mall. I heard from one of the PExers na Borders and Barnes will open here in Greenbelt in a couple of years.

"night" is another World War II Concentration camp novel. True story kinda sad as usual
