If it means anything, I have an account with Vicker Ballas.

Vicker Ballas it is, although I haven't activated the card yet.

How do you find dealing with them, KD? And if you don't mind, what's the best way to start getting into stocks? :D

It's supposed to be Vickers Ballas. Sorry.

They are good people to deal with, although I must say I have not traded since 1998. I must also disclose that the person who handles our account is our kumare - my son's godmother. That might make a difference, but it shouldn't.

I just realized that you are opening an online account. What I have is a regular phone call and paper account, not an online one, so my experience with them might be a little different.

The first statement I make to anyone who asks about getting into stocks as an investment is this:

Do not invest in stocks any money which you are not prepared to lose, or for which you have an alternative use in the next five years.

It seems to me, Noisy Cricket that you have plenty of alternative uses for your money in the next five years, such as:

1) downpayment for a home
2) purchase of furniture, appliances, etc for your home
3) wedding expenses
4) honeymoon expenses
5) childbirth (????) and related expenses

Then again, maybe you're very rich and have provided for all of the above. If so, we should talk some more.
