If UE will play man-to-man D, Coach Glen may task Aldrech Ramos to lurk around the three-point area on a high-post play to take away the presence of Elmer Espiritu in the middle so that the guards RR Garcia, Andy Barroca, and their big men Cervantes and Nondou will have an easy time penetrating the basket with Elmer guarding Ramos on the high-post.

I hope that Coach Lawrence will have the better strategy this time, and I'll pray that the UE Red Warriors will have the heart to win their Final Four games.

Right now, the UE Warriors is in Cebu for Team Building. For sure, they will also play some tune-up games with some Cebuano squad to take the rust-off from a 10-day sabbatical.

I hope they will be as lethal as they were when they face the Tamaraws this Saturday.

Several people asked me what I thought about the accusations that FEU's Mark Barroca has been throwing games. I answered every time out that I'd be really surprised if he does. And if he did, I'd be very cross at him.

But I know that he doesn't and will never.

He was on FEU's Team B with his current batch of teammates when their 2006 squad was blown up in the off season. That team was blown up because management felt it wasn't good enough to challenge for a title. It was deemed that the players on Team B were not only better than the UAAP team but ready to contend for a title in the years to come. It was only in 2007 when JR Gerilla was thrown off the team and Jeff Chan forever banished from the Morayta campus. And Barroca, like the others were there when Mac Baracael was nearly killed.

Don't tell me that those lessons aren't learned? He is signed to Smart Gilas and Oracle. He knows he is set if he plays his cards right. While in Jakarta with the Smart Gilas team I was privy to one session where the players openly talked and teased one another about basketball game fixing included. I thought that Mark gave a very passionate diatribe on shady dealings and being unhappy about losing. He is so excited about the future. In fact, of the Tamaraws team, it is only him and Aldrech Ramos with a sterling class attendance record. He really wants to move up and learn.

The reason why he was very successful with Smart Gilas and Oracle is that he has the ball in his hands all the time. He plays lots of minutes and clearly wants the ball come crunch time. With FEU, it's another story. Glenn Capacio said prior to the start of the current season, he'd give the ball to RR Garcia while turning Barroca into a shooting guard. How many point guards do they have -- five or six. Barroca will never be the shooting guard that Ben Fernandez is. Plain and simple, iba yung laro.

On a lighter note, Capacio also joked that he is the only one to be able to stop Barroca; something he jests about even in the presence of his prized guard.

The truth is Barroca finds FEU's offense (even before the arrival of Garcia) to be restrictive ahd that he totally enjoys playing for Gilas. It's hard for him to be effective when the ball is in Garcia's hands. I've seen him play bad games for FEU, Oracle, and Gilas and he always bounces back. I've been inside their locker room and at their practice and have made many friends on their team. I may not know as much as the others but from what we know, then it isn't so.

At the start of the season, I was worried that he would suffer from fatigue. I even voiced that concern to their trainer on several occasions. During the summer, he was playing and practicing for FEU, Oracle, and Gilas. I wondered if fatigue would set it. In Jakarta, after matches his arm would be real sore. In fact prior to one game, he couldn't lift his arms because they were in pain. One time an opponent from Kuwait took a shot at him. He was already in pain yet he was taking shots. Obviously binawian niya ng mas matindi (it almost sparked a rumble). Siya rin yung tinitira ng kalaban. They gear their defense to stopping him. Nevertheless, I wondered if the fatigue would carry over for the UAAP tournament.

I understand that FEU officials are meeting right now -- around noon time of this post -- to deliberate on his case. If this is true (and I know he has not admitted to anything) then it's really disappointing. But this Tamaraws team are like brothers having been together solidly for three years now. I know that JR Cawaling is upset at the accusations hurled against his teammate. It's totally not fair.

Like I said, I don't believe in it. And so do many others. If it does turn out then man, how crushing is that? I hope this is resolved.

By the same token, players on other squads are reported to be doing some shady things. Even in Ateneo, over the years, there rumors of players (just a few mind you) who were throwing games. But they were just that. Rumors.

Man, all this is making my head spin.

Final Four and knock-out game history in UAAP MBT is not on the side of UE. The match-up between number 2 seed Far Eastern University and number 3 University of the East is indeed something to look forward to. Having split their two regular season games, the Tamaraws and Red Warriors are expected to put up a good show. Of course, FEU still owns the twice-to-beat advantage, but don’t believe for a second that Coach Glenn Capacio will be content with letting even one win against UE slip away.

Their first meeting on August 9 saw UE coming back from 20 points down only to fall in the end, 76-72, after a physical encounter left Elmer Espiritu bloodied while Reil Cervantes and Pari Llagas exchanged blows. August 23 was the date of their highly anticipated rematch. The squad from Morayta was riding high on an eight-game win streak, but Coach Lawrence Chongson’s crew was not intimidated by it. From the outset, UE pounced hard, leading the boys from Morayta 22-10 after one period. Even though the Tams exploded for 31 second quarter points and trailed by just 45-41 at the half, a late 20-6 run jacked the Warriors’ lead to 79-61 powered by Llagas’ inside forays. With a final score of 87-72, UE ended FEU’s win streak and served notice to the rest of the UAAP that the Red Tribe is indeed a force to contend with.

The Red Warriors are currently riding a six-game winning streak of their own and they seem to be peaking at the right time. Though Llagas has been slowed by a strained hamstring, the Recto-based Warriors have just kept humming along, with Val Acuña picking up the scoring slack, albeit from the outside. Paul Lee finished as league leader in assists, but his scoring has also improved. Espiritu’s athleticism has been on full display whether it be his slam dunking or his shotblocking. Each of these components are going to have to click if UE wants to extend this series to another game.

FEU was on pace to overtake Ateneo at the top of the team standings and finish with the top seed when they led the Blue Eagles by 18 points late in the third quarter of their game. But a 22-4 run and a missed Cervantes free throw doomed the Tamaraws to a 74-73 loss, and the difficult task of facing the scary Warriors. The Tams desperately need the high-leaping Pipo Noundou back from injury as they need someone who can match Espiritu’s energy on the boards. If Paul Sanga can maintain his hot-shooting from the outside, then they can neutralize Acuña. More importantly however, the tandem of RR Garcia and Andy Barroca will have to play significantly better than they did against Ateneo if they hope to end this series on Saturday.

FIVE DAYS BEFORE playing a defining match in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament, Far Eastern University is confronting a question it has different—and sometimes no—answers to.

Where is superstar guard Mark Barroca?

The heady playmaker had been absent from the Tamaraws’ practices since Tuesday, fueling speculations that he has been dropped from the team just days before FEU battles the University of the East Warriors at the start of the Final Four phase of the country’s most prestigious collegiate hoop tournament.

Acting on those speculations, a tip from a source and reports that top FEU officials had convened a meeting to discuss the status of one of its players, the Inquirer dropped by the FEU practice session Wednesday morning and confirmed the absence of the Smart Gilas national team standout.

When questioned, team personnel cited various reasons for the absence of the ace guard—who scored eight points, all in the first quarter, in Saturday’s game where FEU blew an 18-point lead and lost to defending champion Ateneo, 74-73, in their battle for the No. 1 ranking in the eliminations.

Team captain JR Cawaling said Barroca, who leads the Tamaraws in scoring with 12.7 points a game, had a flu. A team staff member, however, said that Barroca sustained an unspecified injury.

Further raising eyebrows is the fact that FEU coach Glenn Capacio admitted he’s unaware of Barroca’s whereabouts.

Athletic director Mark Molina said UAAP president and FEU team manager Anton Montinola will issue a statement to answer the Inquirer questions at the “proper time.”

FEU was also in the spotlight last year when one of its top players, Mac Baracael, was shot by an unidentified gunman on his way to the players’ quarters. Baracael survived the shooting.

“Di ko alam kung ano ang nangyari (I don’t know what happened),” said Capacio. “Siguro baka may pinuntahan (He may have gone somewhere).”

Reports (not in the Inquirer) earlier said that FEU officials met Tuesday noon regarding the status of an unnamed player. Late Tuesday evening, the Inquirer received a tip that Barroca had been booted out of the team dormitory inside the campus.

Cawaling, though, said Barroca had only been quarantined.

“He’s in the chapel,” said Cawaling in Filipino. “He was moved there so he won’t spread the flu. He didn’t practice yesterday.”

The 5-foot-10 Barroca also averages 5.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.6 steals as one of the top FEU players.

Yesterday, though, Cawaling talked like the team will try to make do without Barroca in the Final Four.

“We can still do it even without Mark,” said Cawaling “We trust each other. Everyone’s capable of playing in the semifinals.”

The Tamaraws, who finished second in the eliminations at 11-3 to claim the twice-to-beat semifinal advantage, will battle the Warriors at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Far Eastern University’s star guard Mark Barroca has reportedly been asked by school officials to explain a dip in his performance, particularly in FEU’s last two games during which it beat University of Santo Tomas in overtime and then lost to Ateneo by one point after leading by 18 points.

Sources who requested not to be named said that even Barroca’s teammates had asked the coaching staff not to field him during the crucial Ateneo game saying they suspect he was not playing up to his ability.

The 5-foot-10 Barroca played in all 14 games during the double-round eliminations that saw him average 12.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.1 steals in 28.9 minutes to lead the Tamaraws to an 11-3 record.

But it was his performance in the last two games that made his teammates and school officials to suspect that there was something amiss with his game.

“Gusto ng mga kasama niya, huwag na siya paglaruin during their game against Ateneo, kasi parang may hinala na sila,” the source said. “Iba na na raw kasi ang laro niya the past few games.”

It was during La Salle’s game when FEU players noticed that something was “wrong” with Barroca’s game.

Though coach Glenn Capacio refused to confirm or deny it, Barroca, according to another source, was asked to a meeting by university officials management last Tuesday and was questioned about the sudden drop in his performance.

“He was asked by the management about his performance, but I don’t know what will happen,” the source added.

Efforts to get confirmation from FEU officials proved futile as athletic director Mark Molina did not answer text queries.

In his last two games, Barroca normed only 7.5 points, 3 rebounds and 3.5 errors per contest.

He played for just 21 minutes in FEU's 71-69 overtime triumph over La Salle last Sept. 5 and logged 23 minutes in a 74-73 loss to Ateneo last Saturday.

In that game, he scored eight points in the first quarter but went scoreless the rest of the way as the Tamaraws blew an 18-point lead in the third quarter to waste an opportunity of gaining the No. 1 spot in the Final Four.

He was 4-of-5 in the first quarter and 0-3 for the next three quarters.

Despite the allegations, Capacio had nothing but praise to Barroca, who on his third season with the team, has emerged as one of the top players in the country. He had stints in the PBL and also with the RP developmental team where he is considered one of the top guards.

"Wala na akong masasabi sa kanya, talagang magaling siya at talented," said Capacio, who has coached Barroca since the 2007 season.

Meanwhle, the Tamaraws will face University of the East in the Final Four on Saturday. With a twice to beat advantage, they only have to win once to advance to the finals.

But at this stage, FEU does not need any distraction.

The Warriors are on a six-game roll, including a win over the Tamaraws, 87-7.

Disgruntled Barroca drops out of FEU team, says manager

Far Eastern U will no longer have Andy Barroca for its Final Four campaign in UAAP Season 72.

According to Barroca’s manager, Ed Ponceja, the wily guard decided to drop out of the Tamaraws’ lineup, disgruntled over what he felt were baseless accusations of game-fixing thrown at him by team officials.

“Wala na, ayaw na niya maglaro kasi may lamat na yung samahan nila ni coach (Glen Capacio)," Ponceja said in a telephone interview.

“Syempre masama loob niya dahil napapagbintangan siya. So, para hindi na siya pagdudahan, he will no longer play na lang for FEU. He will just concentrate on his studies and his other team, Smart Gilas," he added.

Barroca, a sports recreation management student, is one of the premier point guards in the UAAP. He is also a member of the Smart Gilas national team that is tasked to earn a slot to the 2012 Olympics.

Signs of trouble over at the FEU camp sprouted lately after a disgruntled Barroca skipped the last practice sessions of the Tamaraws.

Ponceja said the “accusations" had a great psychological impact on the pride of Zamboanga. Barroca, he said, opted to make himself scarce as he pondered on his tough decision to stop playing for his collegiate squad.

“Hindi makatulog and hindi makakain yung bata," said Ponceja. “Si Andy is one of those players who dreamed of making big and earn a career playing basketball. Mahirap lang ang pamilya niyan. But his family was devastated as well upon hearing such accusations."

Asked whether his ward would consider transferring to other schools, Ponceja said it would not be an option.

“Sayang naman kasi 30 units na lang yata and kaya na niya tapusin ito in one-and-a-half year's time," Ponceja said.

According to Ponceja, Barroca was signed to a three-year contract by Smart Gilas. As such, his ward would now devote his time playing for the amateur squad tasked to represent the country in major international tournaments.

He is also expected to be included in the Gilas lineup which would play as guest squad in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

Calls made by GMANews.TV to coach Capacio weren’t answered as of posting time.

FINALLY somebody commented on the game of Cawaling... *okay*

FEU should also realize teams are now reacting to the plays of the team and they also know that Barroca is the most integral part of the team so expect that team defense would really zero in on the guy. He scored 8 points in the first quarter but norman is not a dumb coach so he really made an effort to remove the ball from Andy or limit his touches.

Its the other players who should step up when they know their best player is being hounded like hell... I bet this issue would not be present had FEU won the game. Poor Andy because I truly believe this guy is clean and he just became a sorry excuse for a team that cant handle defeat.

I said it before and I'll say it again, UE is very capable of scoring an upset, with or without Barroca. They are the hottest team right now and if Paul Lee plays this way all throughout the playoffs, Espiritu picks up his scoring, Llagas continues to be consistent, and Acuna uses his basketball IQ, i will go out on a limb and say that they may even have a chance against ADMU..

i think they won a game already against a twice to beat arwind santos and co. team but could'nt make an upset on the second game
