The best thing to do for us thomasians is to cheer for our school till the very end. Final four or not. At least give UE a good fight till the very end.

One win. Three tries. University of Santo Tomas just needed one win in three tries to formalize their entry into the Final Four. They lost to La Salle by four points, then were completely destroyed by an underdog Adamson quintet. Now they’ll have to knock off a streaking University of the East team that has been clicking on all cylinders of late. If UST loses and La Salle beats lowly NU, then the Tigers and Archers will have a playoff game to determine the fourth seed into the Final Four.

On July 25, the squad from España showed that they can indeed topple UE. Both high-powered offenses were clicking in a game filled with shifts in momentum for both sides. In the end though, Dylan Ababou got hot when it mattered most and finished with 28 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists in Santo Tomas’ 92-88 win. Khasim Mirza ably supported Ababou on that day with his 20 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists.

Undoubtedly, Coach Pido Jarencio is going to need the same kind of production from his two stalwarts, as well as rookie gunner Jeric Teng. All three of these players seemed to be sleepwalking throughout the game against Adamson, leaving their coach flabbergasted with how ineffective they were. It was left to guards Jeric Fortuna and Tata Bautista to pick up the slack as even big man Chris Camus seemed out of sorts.

For UE, not even a recent hamstring strain on Pari Llagas has gotten in their way. With Llagas nursing his leg, Paul Lee, Val Acuña, and Elmer Espiritu have been leading the way for the Recto-based quintet. They are locked in at the number 3 spot already, with nothing more to play for than to get some revenge on UST as well as to enter the playoffs with a winning streak. Coach Lawrence Chongson’s free-flowing offense has been doing wonders for the morale of UE supporters all season long, and it’s highly unlikely that he’ll take his foot of the proverbial gas pedal with regards to this contest.

A win by UE won’t prove fatal for the Growling Tigers. However, it will obviously complicate their lives. One win is all UST needs to enter the playoffs. Can they finally get it?

I totally agree w/ you. UST already had their chances but they still blew it. Tinulungan na nga sila ng UE at FEU by beating La Salle pero hindi naman nila ginampanan ang tungkulin nila (beat La Salle and Adamson). If UST loses to UE, they only have themselves to blame. La Salle already has gained the momentum. In fact, even if UST makes it to the Final Four (if ever they beat UE), it's going to be an uninspiring game against the Ateneo Blue Eagles. It might even last to just one game unlike kapag La Salle ang nakapasok, baka umabot pa iyan sa second game.

In what turned into an anti-climactic contest, the University of the East Red Warriors just kept rolling along. After La Salle’s loss to NU in the earlier game eliminated the Archers, there was no overwhelming need for the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers to top UE anymore. Still, both teams went at it with gusto, and the Red Tribe won their sixth straight game, 77-67.

A big crowd turned out for both teams, anticipating a must-win situation for UST. Despite the La Salle loss, the España-based team was still aching to break their two-game skid. So relaxed was UE that high-leaping Elmer Espiritu already had two big dunks in the first period alone. The opening quarter ended with UE ahead 17-13. By the time the second quarter rolled around, both teams caught fire on the offensive end and Val Acuña ended up with 13 points. Still, Coach Lawrence Chongson kept pushing his boys to keep the pressure on UST. Halftime saw UE leading 42-36.

In the third period, Coach Pido Jarencio’s squad found some defense and slowly attacked the UE lead. They would come as close as 44-43, but Paul Lee and Acuña weren’t going to let UST overtake them. However, the Tigers unleashed a late 7-0 blast to just trail 51-50 at the end of three. When the fourth quarter opened, UE delivered a 7-0 blast of their own courtesy of Acuña’s scoring and Lee’s assisting. Both squads caught fire from beyond the arc in the fourth, unleashing a combined 8 triples in the payoff period. For every triple from Jeric Fortuna and Tata Bautista, Lee and Acuña would have an answer. In the end though, UE had just enough defense to hold off UST’s last charge.

The 77-67 win assured the Red Tribe of a sixth straight win and should give Coach Chongson’s charges confidence heading into the Final Four. Santo Tomas couldn’t have picked a worse time to lose three straight, and barely sneak into the Final Four thanks to the NU Bulldogs. Until Coach Jarencio can get his players to shut the opposing team down or get some big scoring from the trio of Dylan Ababou, Khasim Mirza, and Jeric Teng, their playoff experience might just be one and done.

Most likely you remember me as a nightmare last season. Pero this season I think UE or FEU can pull an upset over admu(ofcourse if UST can pull a miracle eh di better. Pero mukhang wishful thinking yun at this stage)

Last season inis ako sa UE I guess because of James Martinez...naaangasan ako masyado sa kanya.

I'm leaning more on UE as bilib ako sa puso ni Elmer Espiritu maglaro. Paul Lee reminds me of a UST guard before Henry Ong. Why? virtually useless sa preseason pero come crunch time halos lahat ng ibato pasok.

UST played well kanina, well better than when we lost to AdU & DLSU pero UE played extremely better. Lalo na at nagbreakout game pa ata yung Acuña ba yun?

Congrats UE. If UST can't pull a miracle, hope you can pull an upset. ;)

I do not want to say this because I have a lot of Thomasian friends but since you started it, you gave me no choice but to say this. Hindi ba mas maganda kung kayo mismo ang gumawa ng paraan para makapasok kayo sa final four? It took a DLSU loss for your team to enter the final four.
