there has been a lot of changes since these two teams met at the start of the season.

ust, on one hand, has been able to score wins behind the heroics of leading mvp candidate dylan ababou, top rookie of the year bet jeric teng, and khasim mirza. guys like chris camus, jeric fortuna, and allein maliksi provided ample support in defending, quarterbacking, and scoring. tata bautista, however, has been quiet save for the second round win against up.

adamson, on the other hand, gave many teams a scare. almost all of their games were close, but not quite. sophomore lester alvarez has carried this team all season long. guys like alex nuyles, jeric canada, and jan colina had their flashes. but the other guys seemed erratic.

The UAAP season opened with a battle between the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers and the Adamson University Falcons. In that July 11 match-up, the Tigers barely held on for a 76-75 win. But that was almost two months ago, and both teams have gone in separate directions since.

The crew from España has been knocking on the door of the Final Four thanks to the efforts of leading MVP candidate Dylan Ababou and wingmen Khasim Mirza and Jeric Teng. Despite a stunning loss to La Salle this past Thursday, the Growling Tigers’ playoff hopes remain in their hands. Coach Pido Jarencio’s squad just needs to win over the Falcons or their final game against UE to nail down their spot and formally eliminate the Archers.

For Coach Leo Austria, a year that started off with promise has gone into a tailspin. They last saw action a week ago and could have ended a 12-year losing streak to Ateneo but were nailed to a measly 7 points in the final period. Now, all they can hope to do is act as spoiler for UST and saviors for La Salle. Adamson has shown the ability to stay in games with the league powerhouses yet lacking the ability to pull out wins in the fourth period. Their only stellar win was over La Salle, and that was over two weeks ago. The promise that Lester Alvarez, Jan Colina and Jeric Cañada showed earlier this season has long been tempered with the fact that once more, Adamson will miss the playoffs.

With the spectre of defeating the strong UE team looming on the horizon, the Tigers might look at this game as a true do-or-die encounter. If they can’t top the Falcons, that leaves the door open for La Salle. That door is definitely something that UST wants to close already.

This is not a cake walk for UST. Adamson CAN and will take every opportunity to stall our F4 hopes. As usual, composure and consistency is the key. Get those 3-pointers to drop effectively. Or if that doesn't work, work on the two's patiently and accurately in the paint.

I just watched in awe how FEU pulled out that nail biter of a win over DLSU last night. *okay* Their long toms from beyond the arc were blah and far in between with only RR Garcia pulling the trigger yet they managed to inch closer and clinched the victory. Well that I say was composure!

Also another observation in the dying seconds of the regulation period: LA Salle was able to set up their 3-point shot effectively in contrast to our play in our game against them which eventually resulted in that flubbed last-option Ababou drive to the basket.

You have a point but remember, the Coaching Staff prepares the game plan/strategy, its up to the players to execute. What if the coaching staff prepared a very good game plan but the players were not able to execute it, is it the coaching staff's fault?

the tigers were listless from the tipoff. walang ka-energy-energy. and wtf happened to dylan? this man was hounded by the defense of the opposing teams all season long. pero he never stopped trying. susugud at susugod siya. kanina, parang wala man lang ka-effort effort.

and mirza? boy am i glad this is his final year. aside from having no consistency, this player has poor basketball iq. he better take his studies seriously. 'cause i do not think the pro league has room for him.

The University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers couldn’t have picked a worse time to go on a losing streak. Failing to secure their own Final Four slot while giving La Salle hope last Thursday, all the Tigers had to do was beat Adamson to finally lock down the spot. Instead, Coach Pido Jarencio’s troops were blown away by the proud and free-wheeling Falcons 83-64, seriously jeopardizing their playoff dreams.

In the first quarter, Leo Canuday immediately got on track for Coach Leo Austria’s team. With his 7 points neutralizing Jeric Fortuna’s 6 points, the Falcons led after one period, 16-8. Canuday and Fortuna continued their duel in the second quarter as each added 6 points to their tally. With UST big man Chris Camus facing early foul trouble and Allein Maliksi still nursing an injury, Coach Jarencio was forced to use more of Melo Afuang at center, taking away another potential scorer. With Dylan Ababou, Khasim Mirza and Jeric Teng all misfiring, UST was able to whittle down the lead at the half to just 38-34.

In the third quarter however, Canuday got some help from Alex Nuyles and Jerick Cañada in blowing the game wide open for the team from San Marcelino. Playing with no pressure on them, the Falcons kept jacking up three-pointers… and making them. They also had a few undergoal stabs by Nuyles, Jan Colina, and even Arnold Basilio that left the España-based quintet and their fans dumbfounded. By the time the third quarter ended, Santo Tomas was staring at a 60-45 deficit.

So disgusted was Coach Jarencio with his boys’ pathetic play that he pulled out his starters with over half of the fourth quarter yet to be played. For a team with designs on a Final Four spot, the Tigers sure didn’t have any growl in them on this day. The normally steady Ababou was held to only 13 points, but his partners in offense, Teng and Mirza, could only muster 4 points apiece. Camus was even worse with only 3 markers.

As the final buzzer sounded in the Fil-Oil/Flying V Arena, the Falcons had pulled off an upset quite similar to their earlier win over La Salle. Again, it was Canuday’s outside scoring that would prove to be critical in earning the victory. Canuday would end up with 18 points, Nuyles added 16 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 blocks in an all-around performance. Thanks to Adamson, La Salle’s own Final Four hopes stay alive. Unless UST can now pull off an upset over streaking UE, an almost inevitable playoff game against their green-clad tormentors seems almost destined to happen.

Nahirapan ata si Ababou kanina kasi ang sikip ng Adamson defense. Tapos hindi pa pumapasok yung iba niyang tira.

UST has good offensive weapons in Dylan, Khazim and Jeric but until pido decides to put an emphasis on defense this team will always be so-so.

Camus is the only one who consistently play defense or knows what defense means. You have an excellent guard rotation in Fortuna and Bautista but once the offense sputters then your blown away.

Adamson barely averages 70 points this season yet they scored over 80 while your 83 point average was non-existent due to the defense of ADU.

You cant blame the 3 refs this time or any conspiracy theories and your not a rookie-laden team infact Jeric is your only rookie and he doesnt even play like a rookie.

I think UST ran out of reasons this time and your just being unmasked as the season comes to an end.

In the DLSU-UST game thread, I pointed out that UST limited DLSU to 68 points in last Thursday's game after allowing them 101 points. in the 1st round. You made a rebuttal that it was a not a product of good team defense since DLSU is one of the worst shooting teams in the league.

And now you're saying that Adamson exceeded their scoring average for the season with an obvious patama on UST's defense.

You probably mean Teng is the only rookie that is part of our regular rotation. However, such fact doesn't ipso facto mean that we're not rookie-laden.
