back in season 70, NU beat Ateneo because Ateneo was considerably a weak team. Ford Arao and Chris Tiu were the only ones carrying the team compared to last season and today's season wherein the whole starting five up to 3 guys in the bench contribute a lot. Plus, NU had the second leading scorer that time Jonathan Fernandez, a good scoring point guard in Jonathan Jhanke, and uber talented forward Edwin Asoro.

Now, who do they have? Well, Hermosisima and Baloran are the only ones who can score in this team. Both will be checked well by Baclao and Long. So, who's left? Ajeet Singh? He's an up and coming Bader Malabes so he won't be a problem for the probably the best three point shot defenders in the league.

An upset? Not a chance. NU is not UP, a team who has talent and skills but lack the end game leadership. NU may be a force in the future but that will be quite distant.

Hope Ateneo fights 100% all the time.

Their last 4 games are against FEU, Adu, NU and UP. Based on current standing, since UE has 6 wins and Ateneo has 9, and both have 4 remaining games, then Ateneo only needs to win 2 to gain the twice to beat advantage.

Talk about going in opposite directions. The defending champion Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles have rung up six straight wins on the way to clinching a spot in the Final Four after their last victory over UST. The National University Bulldogs have lost four straight games, the last of which was a 29-point blowout at the hands of Adamson. Now, they’ll have to play a team that crushed them 75-47 this past August 1.

In that last contest, NU and Ateneo actually played a tight first quarter that was tied 8-8. The bad news for Coach Manny Dandan’s crew was that reigning MVP Rabeh al-Hussaini had 10 second quarter points for the Blue Eagles to power a 22-4 run and effectively put the team from Katipunan ahead to stay.

Just this past Sunday, Ateneo trailed UST for most of their game as al-Hussaini was plagued by foul trouble. But in the final period, Coach Norman Black’s quintet fed their big man consistently and got some timely outside sniping from Kirk Long to secure an 80-70 win over the Growling Tigers. Now that the Blue Eagles have clinched a spot in the Final Four, the next goal is to secure the number one position and the twice-to-beat advantage.

NU got 11 first quarter points from Mervin Baloran versus Adamson, but he was largely held in check the rest of the way. Gunner Kokoy Hermosisima was silenced and aside from a dunk, Jewel Ponferrada’s night was pretty forgettable. Whatever magic Ajeet Singh seemed to weave early in round one has evaporated into thin air as the rest of the league has adjusted to the rookie’s style of play. A 13-point second half against the Falcons brought back memories of NU being the UAAP’s traditional whipping boys.

Winning over the Bulldogs might be viewed by some as a mere formality, but history has proven that NU can bite Ateneo hard when they least expect it, as was the case in season 70. Coach Black can’t let his troops fall into the trap of complacency lest history repeat itself this Thursday.

for an atenean, nakakatakot din etong game kasi most of the time, di sineseryoso yung laro kapag kalaban nila yung lowest sa standings. it's almost a sure thing that norman black would use this game to try out his line-up again. ok lang iyon basta tambak na yung game (and by tambak, at least 25 points or something iyon)

as long as they don't treat NU like a HS team, then they'll be fine

NU scares me at this point. There's nothing more dangerous than a team with nothing left to play for except a few laughs at the expense of the better teams. This is usually the point where the pressure mounts and teams are trying to build momentum entering the playoffs. NU's simply playing to get more experience heading into next year.

But one of the things Coach Norman has helped improve is Ateneo's game-long poise and composure. Besides, nag-quota na ang Ateneo sa "WTF" upsets this season.

OBF!

Huwag ka na humingi ng update. Almost 30 pts na lamang midway thru the 2nd quarter -- and rising.

1st quarter 1st 5 was actually playing lazy offensively but their defense held up, limitng NU to like 6 points. Then the bench +Buenafe came in and upped the lead to 20+.

Tapos binalik pa yung 3 starters +Buenafe and 1 bench. Ayun halos 30 na. Naaawa tuloy me sa NU, I stopped watching muna.

This game ended in the first quarter. After National University’s Kokoy Hermosisima opened the scoring with a three-pointer, the Bulldogs never scored in the period again. After being held to a record-low 3 points in the first quarter and only 10 points to end the first half, the Bulldogs lost to the defending champion Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles 75-54.

A backbreaking 28-0 run followed that Hermosisima three-pointer, and Coach Manny Dandan’s wards never threatened again. Reigning UAAP Most Valuable Player Rabeh al-Hussaini had 7 points while Jai Reyes had 6 for the Eagles in the first period as Ateneo led 16-3. Ryan Buenafe then took over in the second, scoring 3 triples and a total of 14 points in continuing the dominance of the squad from Katipunan. Halftime saw Coach Norman Black’s team leading by an amazing score of 42-10.

From there, it wasn’t a matter of if Ateneo would win, it was by how much. NU tried fighting back in the third, but it was only token resistance at that point. So hot were the Blue and White that as time ran down in the period, Emman Monfort threw up a desperation three-pointer which connected. Entering the fourth canto, Ateneo was up 57-23. Coach Black was able to rest starters Nonoy Baclao and Jai Reyes, neither of whom saw action again after the first quarter.

Even as the Bulldogs tried mounting any semblance of a comeback, the lead was much too big for them to overcome. Recalling that the score in their first round meeting was 75-47 for the Blue Eagles, NU was somehow able to hammer out a more respectable deficit this time around as the final score read 75-54. Buenafe broke out of a season-long sophomore slump to the tune of 23 points, 4 rebounds and 2 blocks while al-Hussaini had 15 points and 10 rebounds in only 23 minutes of play.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR ATENEO BLUE EAGLES!

Finally, Ryan has come out of his shell! I am very happy for him and for our team. I sure hope he continues to play with confidence.

Although we blew the game wide open, I am not happy with the turn overs and the apparent lack of energy. At the half, we had 10 TOs versus NU's 11. I hope Coach Norman would remind the boys that even though we are on top, we should not relax especially on our defense. The NU put back with three nonchalant blue shirts under the basket gave me a slight headache.

Well, at least my wish came true. On the floor: Tiongson, Golla, Gonzaga, De Chavez and.... BURKE! I want to see more of them especially Juami.

Justin Chua: Black Project on going.

What about that buzzer beater three by Emman to end the 3rd quarter?

Overall, it was a good job by the boys in blue. Keep it up!

Lord, thank You for this huge win!

At least we can safely say NU's 1st string is better than ADMUs 3rd ... bumaba yung lamang eh. :)

Pero I think sa depensa mahina yung 3rd string ... hindi sa scoring.

Kahit wide open na yung game sa 1st quarter pa lang, ADMUs offense was lazy -- not enough cutters and ball movement. It was their D that broke the game open.

Looking back at the games they played so far, ang dominating talaga ng Blue Eagles. YES, hindi sila perfect (10 pt loss vs UP), at maraming room for improvements (TOs), pero they can, given an opponent such as NU, dictate at will other aspects of the game.

- they won (1st match) against a formidable DLSU squad at one of their worst games
- their rookie of the year and one of last year's prolific points contributor is having a so-so season so far (until last night), yet they're doing swell
- bench contribution
- they can run, they can post
- they use 3 pointers properly
- they defend like hell
- they space and pass the ball
- aside from their regular scorers, various players have exploded each game

- in last night's game, given that Baclao was still nursing an injury, coach Norman can choose not to play him as much
- in last night's game again, the coaching staff can 'pad' Rabeh's numbers (and I have this feeling that they monitor this) to make sure he becomes an MVP contender again. In the 3rd (or 4th) canto, when there was really no need for Rabeh to play, he was still in the game. The reason (my opinion): he only had 9 rebounds. The moment he got his 10th, he was pulled out. Another double-double game.
- same goes for Ryan: having a slump? No problem. Give him the go signal to go all out.

Also: they manage leads well, and know how to pace themselves to come back if trailing.

feel ko nga talaga gusto ng coaching staff dagdagan numbers ni Rabeh. for me, mas kelangan nila sa floor si Baclao kesa kay Rabeh kasi naman he's the defensive anchor in the best defensive team. Pero he's still nursing an injury. Good thing it's not his shot-blocking hand. Siguro they want another MVP title for Rabeh. Being MVP can boost morale tenfold. If Rabeh wins the MVP award, his confidence will be at its maximum going into a most probable finals repeat.
