Hi Guyz,
It's NCAA Cheerleading season again and there are lots of interesting scoops that will happen this 85th season.
To start off, we have guest teams such as Arellano Univeristy, Emilio Aguinaldo University and all the way from Pampangga, Angeles University Foundation. These new teams will vie for the 2nd NCAA Cheerleading competition.
Insiders from each school informed me that these teams are already preparing for the upcoming action-packed event. Coaches from Arellano University came from Central Colleges of the Philippines (CCP) while coach from Angeles Univeristy came from Far Easter University (FEU). For EAC, I need to confirm with my insiders if it's still Coach BJ, a former pep of UE PEP Squad, will still handle the said squad.
SO, CHEER LADS and LADIES, post your comments and updates for your school's team who will vie for this year's CHAMPIONSHIP. Will it still be JRU Pep Squad, who have risen from ashes or will it be a new squad who will get this year's crown. Remember, the CHAMPION for this league will get a chance to represent our country for international cheerleading competition against strong contenders such as Thailand, Japan and Taiwan.
So post now and LET's BRING IT ON!!!
*okay*

Before we tackle the issue of competing abroad, can you tell us what is the umbrella organization for cheerleading varsities in the Philippines? Do we have more than one organization? And what schools are affiliated with that competition?

Last year's NCAA Cheerleading competition's result was surprising in a sense that early favorites and consistent top 3 contenders (Letran and Perpetual) were booted out of the top 3 by CSB and JRU. I even thought Mapua would be the champion.
In another twist of event, 2008 NCAA Cheerleading Champion Jose Rizal University joined the 2008 National Cheerleading Championship together with NCAA schools Mapua and Perpetual. JRU did not even make it to the final round. Good thing Mapua and Perpetual were able to make it to the finals together with the well known cheerleading teams FEU, La Salle, Adamson, Ateneo and other provincial schools. And after the final round, one team was declared champion - UNIVERSITY OF PERPETUAL HELP SYSTEM DALTA!
Siguro ngayon mas competitive na considering the fact that we have guest teams. And all of the teams will surely battle it out to be the best among the rest.

same as UAAP cheerdance din I don't mind kung sino manalo doon because of the same reason.

anyway, cheerleading/cheerdance is not a sport to me in my opinion kaya really I don't watch it besides last year nga SBC-Letran game na lang ako pumasok ng Araneta noong time na yun eh.

ylle41 - for you it may not be a sport but for the rest of the people who compete, get injured from falls, and earn scholarships as varsity athletes, it is a fact that it is a sport. It is new and it has the potential to send people abroad to compete with other countries. Unfortunately, not everyone here accepts that it is one of those emerging sports that need a big boost in exposure because it combines the aspect of dance and gymnastics. ;)

Dapat kasi counted pati half-time performances everytime may basketball game. That is to motivate every squad to give 100% in every performance. :D

Does that mean this year eh walang points na makukuha sa CDC?
ylle41
Jun 11, 2009, 11:15 AM
AFAIK wala talaga kaya nga may cash prize ang cheerleading eh...
from wikipedia...
The National Collegiate Athletic Association General Championship is awarded to the school with the most points garnered in an academic year in the NCAA. It is split into the Juniors' division (for male high school students) and to the Seniors' division (for college students).
The champion school in a given sport receives 30 points, with the runner-up receiving 20, and the last place receiving one point. All of the points from the different sports are then tabulated, and the school with the most points is the General Champion. Only sports that are official are included (cheerleading is excluded).
The awarded school is judged as the best athletic program in the NCAA for the given academic year.
The General Championship is similar to the NACDA Director's Cup of the American NCAA.

All of you have valid points raised regarding the "changes" in halftime performances. The distinction between traditional cheerleading and cheerdancing has been redefined and embraced by the old and new generation. Let's not be too close-minded about it. ;)
I mean, who would've thought that CSB that has traditional roots from Lasalle would suddenly become competitive and land the 3rd spot in the competition? Or Letran's cheering squad changed into a competitive cheerdancing team? Mapua, JRU, UPHSD bagging trophies? :)
I guess change is good for some and others resist it because they reminisce of the good old days of pure cheerleading by the stands. We should learn to accept and embrace the new things and sustain the essence or the greatest values of the old days when we rally our school or crowds. Meet halfway and be flexible. :smokin:
I distinctly remember when the Blazers entered the NCAA. Majority of the halftime performances were limited to traditional cheers and you can't "irritate" the other side because a rumble would ensue. Which was sad by the way, but it all changed as seasons flew by and we see the squads doing something beyond cheers. It may not be a sport today but it will be, soon. And it helps break barriers since majority of the performers were boys and the school reps were afraid of their girls performing because "mababastos" lang sila. I don't think JRU will have a problem in this area since their old BINGO cheer uses girls.
And you will have to forgive some of the zealots in cheerleading and cheerdancing here. Even though it's a one day event, the physical conditioning and mental preparation is the same as the rest of the athletes in other sports. And the mantra is less mistakes, perfect form. You have to give credit where credit is due.
The stunts, the pyramids, the tosses, and the lifts that each squad do are not easy. It's a statement performance, a way to lift the morale of every team. If they succeed in their performances then they succeed in one thing that helps the most, helping their crowd participate in the game and pushing the team despite the odds.

In my time as a former head drummer in the squad, the only people that were dancing were the girls. And the traditional dances of the boys were the only thing that kept ourselves as distinct as the rest of the schools like Letran and San Beda. Even the girls who performed during half-time wore white pants, no skirts. Like I said before, change is inevitable.
And you don't have to be prejudiced towards them either. They will always be there, dancing, howling, waving banners, or just plain cheering for every team with cute basketball stars. Heck, there are gays everywhere so its best you don't upset other pexers here! ;)

the question is why some students are so much desperate to win the said event? dahil ba sa cash prize?
Of course the cash prize is the second best motivating factor to perform better. Because you don't see a lot of cheerleaders getting sponsors for their uniforms, extra funds for repairs of drums or band equipment, and all that cheering paraphernalia. Depends on the school if they see these squads worthy of financial and educational support in terms of scholarships.
And I wouldn't use the term desperation since these student-athletes are doing it first and foremost, for the glory of their respective alma mater schools. The bragging rights to be the best for one schoolyear like in basketball, volleyball, football, or any other sport in the NCAA.
And I guess you can never understand what it means to be a cheerleader or a cheerdancer unless you became a part of it. The glory is not always found in gold. Motivation is priceless. ;)

Kaya lang naman umasenso ang cheerleading and cheerdancing eh dahil naging tradition na kasi sa halftime ng basketball/football ang mga cheers and halftime performances. The evolution from basketball-based cheerleading was just the first step.

What about sa judging? The judges they get are from member schools, sponsors, even judges with background in cheering, dancing or gymnastics. :D
The judges base the scoring in precision in choreography, difficulty in stunts or lifts, uniform, and crowd support. Also the time used if they go beyond say for example, 5 or 10 minutes then they get a deduction in points. ;)

Why there is a "cheerleading/cheerdancing" competition?
Answers:
1. To promote sportmanship
2. To divert students from engaging in malicious activities
3. To be at par with international standard
4. To exchange ideas
5. To hone skills and promote innovation
6. To entertain and boost morale of alma mater
7. To be able to compete in the international arena
8. (and most especially) To earn the bragging rights
eto lang yun e, it's just like you're asking, "why is there "NCAA" in the first place?"
Hope you're enlightened with those "direct" answers

afaik, walang points ang cheerdance competition. natapon ko na yung breakdown ng general championship points last season so i can't double check.
assuming na wala nga siyang points sa general championship, i consider the cheerdance event as a mere 'sideshow' that's why i don't follow it as religiously as the main sports.

AltarBoy^_^
Jun 18, 2009, 11:16 AM
Well it's a new event, and majority of those who follow the competitions are:
1. Cheerleaders themselves may they be in HS (competitive teams scouting for better lifts, stunts, and choreos), college cheerleaders plus coaches, and alumni who are former members of pep squads.
2. Friends and family of members of the cheering squads.
3. Sponsors, media or advertisers looking for that great squad that produces perky girls with showbiz/commercial ad potential. Not to mention producing a courtside reporter for the basketball games.
4. The school officials themselves who promote their students who can excel despite the fact that their performances are not counted in the general championship, but their athletic scholarships and uniform sponsorships hang in the balance.
Now isn't this ironic, people who love and promote volleyball are putting down pep squads because the competitions have no bearing. And basketball fanatics are putting down volleyball fanatics because they are overtaking them in the UAAP forum. But one thing is certain, all sports are supported by all schools. The media outfit just thinks on a different level when it comes to exposure. But we can always thank Shakey's. CDC's can thank Nestle. :glee:
I suggest that you guys stick to your sport and promote them and leave the cheerdance/cheerleader discussions to people who love it. ;)

You are right theo, Samsung na pala ang sponsor ngayon sa CDC.
Just to clarify something here, cheerleading happens in the stands and during halftime within the court to rally the crowd. Cheerleaders and the crowd chant using school colors and alma mater lyrics. The tradition and fun starts here. ;)
Cheerdancing is the next evolution since it combines the finest elements of cheerleading (stunts, lifts, and pyramids) with choreography using canned music and form a set in a limited time. The chants are not the focus but the choreography. So the people who perform here are not to be underestimated because "accidents" happen here when the stunts go wrong and get deduction in points. American style cheerleading is adapted plus the elements of jazz and other forms of dance like hip-hop, capoeira, breakdancing, and ballet. Gymnastics is also one of the vital elements that we should never forget. :D
We can thank UP and UST for the non-traditional introduction of cheerdancing but we can thank the rest of the traditional schools (SBC, Ateneo, Lasalle, JRU, Letran) for paving the way for them to innovate the way we watch the halftime in basketball now. :cheerleader:

Hear hear! I hate hate hate the gimmicks that come along with cheerdancing, but I really appreciate old traditional cheers. I'd take pumps and yells and traditional partner stunts over things like floor routines, giant pieces of colored cloth and ridiculous themes.
I think cheerleading in America actually has very little dance now. It's all stunts (partner stunts, tosses, pyramids) and cheers (traditional cheers) that make up most of the routine. Which is why cheerleading is considered a sport in America. Some of the partner stunts I've seen schools like University of Kentucky do are in.sane. And you will never ever see them do floor routines.
Then maybe my school can actually break into the top 3.
Cheerleading > Cheerdancing.

Cheerleading > Cheerdancing.
Maybe that's the reason why cheering squads here try to veer away from American cheerleading and innovate by combining some elements of American cheerleading and combining them with original dance routines and themes. Traditional cheerleading in the Philippines has it's own identity and the offspring/descendant is cheerdancing. A tradition for UST and UP but a new development for the rest. ;)

Altas all-go for NCAA; Perp Squad wins two competitions
The Altas of University of Perpetual Help System Dalta are swine flu-free and are raring to go in the nearing NCAA season.
“We have no swine flu cases at Perpetual Help. If there are some students that are sick, it is just common flu cases, nothing alarming,” said Mike del Mundo, UPHSD representative in the NCAA Management Committee.
Meanwhile, the Perp Squad has been collecting trophies after a second place finish in last year’s NCAA cheerleading competition.
Less than a month ago, Perpetual Help emerged the best in the country after ruling the National Collegiate Cheerleading Competition. More recently, they scored another title in a cheerdance competition among UAAP and NCAA schools held at the FilOil and Flying V Arena.
Perpetual garnered 89 points to edge UAAP cheerdance champions University of the Philippines. The UP squad scored got 87.67 points from the judges.
“The school and the NCAA are proud of their achievements,” said del Mundo.
Jose Rizal University finished third with 79 points.

San Beda College as the host school shouldn't settle for second best when it comes to the venue of this event.
This year we have 10 schools participating and the best venue would be the Araneta Coliseum. I believe the attendance this year would be better than last year's. The 3 guest teams will surely send their crowd to the venue. Don't forget the crowd of the Altas Perpsquad (who wishes to steal the title this year) and of course the defending champions, JRU (who wants a back to back title)
So to make things short, ARANETA COLISEUM is the best venue! :)

ylle41
Sep 11, 2009, 11:37 AM

James Ty III
Sep 11, 2009, 12:20 PM
According to Mr. Lacson, it's impossible to hold a seniors game and the cheerdance on the same day kasi we have 10 cheerdance teams at tatagal ng tatlong oras ang CDC. Okey lang if we have seven or eight teams, pero 10 teams, naku, sobrang hahaba ang CDC and the game would have ended at 7 pm. Ma-pe-preempt ang Oprah.

NCAA is the oldest Collegiate Sports Organization in the country, and part of it is the CDC..

Sa Arena ba talaga ang Oct. 7 games? Oct 7 will be a totally SSC-SBC match (both JRS & SRS).. GEES

for as far as I know, since UAAP and NCAA CDC's have the same sponcors during the past competitions, they give same perks and prizes like last year, I think the members of the champion teams in both league received samsung mp3 players plus cash prize..
the thing is, UAAP Champion's cash prize is BIGGER...

I agree with you when it comes to TICKET SALES, UAAP's CDC is proven to be said a "BIGGER EVENT" than the NCAA CDC. What I'm trying to say is that, for the past years, UAAP and NCAA CDC's have the same PRIMARY SPONSORS (before it was Nestle Non Stop Ice Cream, and then Samsung for the recent years, I think it's Jollibee, though I'm not sure, was UAAP's sponsor for this event). These primary sponsors gives out same PERKS, this is in addition to the cash prizes they give to the champion teams in both leagues' competition. The only difference bet. them are the cash prize denominations. In past competitions, UAAP's Cash Prizes are BIGGER than in NCAA's.
Siguro nga sa cash prize, ticket sales could be a basis for the sponsors to decide kung how much yung ibibigay nila. But the perks, they give it fairly in both league's champions.

October 14.

as I said PBA games on Oct.16 friday will be at Cuneta, I'm not sure kung reserved na ang NCAA sa Araneta on that date.

i have to be honest with my feelings, sa totoo lang kinakabahan ako for my school kung madedefend nila yung title, but still naniniwala pa rin ako siguro 60-40 ang chance. 40% baka back2back.hehehe.

They are really determined to maintain their spot in the Top 3. And a friend from the squad, told me na mas maganda daw yung pyramids this year than last year. And mas mahirap yung routine. I just hope they can execute it properly.
Well, I agree. I'd rather see a clean routine.*okay*
But I still believe. I have a feeling they will land a spot in the top 3 (2nd runner up ulit) this year. Magaling yung coach e. :)

pero if you are a student of NCAA schools or a fan of cheerdancing or cheerleading sa country support na lang sila.

kasi ang UAAP, weekends mag hold ng CDC..while NCAA weekdays palagi. so its rily hard for the students, supporters esp. alumni to watch on weekedays due to work and classes. So a lot of supporters would rather watch it on delayed telecast or in you tube. Like me...as much as I wanted to..I can't! It's so hard to file for LOA. lalo na yan,...indefinite yung sched ng CDC. I thought Oct. 9 then na move then ngayon 21 na ***.

All set for 2009 NCAA cheerleading competition
NCAA Press Release, Thu, Oct 15, 2009
The 2009 NCAA Cheerleading unfolds on Oct. 21 at The Arena City with a total of 10 teams headed by defending champion Jose Rizal and national cheerleading champion Perpetual vying for the top purse and the glory as this year’s best cheerleading school.
No less than the Management Committee chaired by Jose Mari Lacson of Seaosn 85 host San Beda and league cheerleading committee chair Herny Atayde of St. Benilde launched the annual event in a press conference at the historic Club Filipino in Greenhills, San Juan City.
“We’re excited because we have instituted some changes that should make this year’s edition more exciting than before,” said Atayde.
One of those innovations was the league’s decision to join hands with the National Cheerleading Championship in organizing this year’s edition.
“The NCC is the only group of its kind in the country and we’re using the same guidelines and rules implemented internationally so we’re really excited to be part of this exciting event,” said NCC national director and head coach Paula dela Llana-Nunag.
Lacson, for his part, said the league and the NCC will hold a cheerleading camp on Sunday at the Emilio Aguinaldo College Gym in Manila to give participants a chance to learn more on the fast-growing sport as well as its safety measures.
The champion team will take home the top purse worth P90,000 while the second and third placers will pocket P55,000 and P45,000, respectively, courtesy of Samsung.
Jose Rizal, which pulled off a stunner by pulling off an improbably win last season, should be one of the favourites this year as well as Perpetual Help, a former three-peat champion, and Mapua, which reigning supreme in the inaugural staging six years ago.
The competition should also pay extra attention on the Perps Squad, which not only topped the NCC finals last year but the cheerleading competition early this year in an event where they bested last year’s UAAP titlist State U and reigning UAAP champion Far Eastern U.
