The University Athletic Association of the Philippines will apply new rules in resolving ties in Season 72, which unfolds on July 11 at the Araneta Coliseum.

League president Anton Montinola of host Far Eastern U yesterday told The STAR they are instituting changes in breaking ties by eliminating unnecessary matches that prolonged the event in past years.

"This year, we will be using common sense to break ties," said Montinola a few days after he presided over a meeting that discussed the technical matters of the tournament.

"In the past, the practice was No. 2 plays No. 3 with the winner playing No. 1 for the top seed. That is senseless when you can break the ties faster," he said.

The rest of the rules, like giving incentive to a school that could pull off a rare sweep, will remain as implemented last season.

This means the team that will score a sweep will gain a twice-to-beat advantage in the finals compared to two years ago when University of the East accomplished the feat but got ambushed by La Salle with a sweep in the best-of-three finals.

The league will also implement rules that give teams a chance to challenge a three-point conversion at any point of the game via instant replay and suspend the possession arrow rule in the last two minutes of the match.

Pro-grip, an adhesive used by players to enable to handle the ball better, is still prohibited while schools will still be limited to two foreign players each with one allowed to play at a time.

UAAP basketball tournament director Mark Molina said the opening day games pit Univ. of Santo Tomas against Adamson at 2 p.m. and last year's losing finalist La Salle versus UE at 4 p.m. on July 11.

The next day, Univ. of the Phils. squares off with National U at 2 p.m. and defending champion Ateneo tackles a Mark Barroca-led FEU side at 4 p.m.

Commissioner Joe Lipa said the league will be tapping a combination of pro, semi-pro and amateur referees from the PBA, PBL and the BRAASCU.

I don't want to be mean here being both a basketball and a volleyball fan, but I agree with Gospel of Judas. I think there are a lot of volleyball players threads here which are becoming sense-less na. I mean, c'mon, there's YM, Facebook, MSN, etc. where they can chat and talk about their lives, but instead, they discuss it in the thread of their idol/s, which is/are clearly off-topic na. Yung iba nga nagpaparami lang ata ng post, just to say na maraming fans ang idols nila. Kaya nga forum eh, you don't meet and greet, but you talk about stuff which are related to the topic or the thread selected.

Nakakapanibago lang cause usually May or June, punong-puno na ang PEx ng mga basketball threads like about the recruited players, preparations, off season tournaments, UAAP opening preparations, cheerdance competition, etc.

I think the Volleyball Fever right now is very hard to compete with since except for NCAA Volleyball, after the UAAP basketball season, there's the UNIGAMES, V-League, UAAP and then another V-League, heck even the National Open, National Intercollegiate and Toribio Cup. That's like an average of 9 months of Volleyball Fever.

That's why I really am in favor of making a sub-thread for Volleyball here in the UAAP section or better yet, make a general topic/thread na for UAAP volleyball lang. Haha.

i think it is time for PEX administrators to strongly consider the idea of dividing both the UAAP and the NCAA (there are also some volleyball team/player "appreciation" threads on that part of PEX but, just like their UAAP counterparts, they also featured nothing but nonsense posts from retarded volleyball groupies) into three subsections:

* UAAP/NCAA Basketball - section that is exclusively devoted to UAAP/NCAA basketball teams and players and analysis of various UAAP/NCAA basketball games.

* UAAP/NCAA Volleyball - section that is exclusively devoted to UAAP/NCAA volleyball teams and players and analysis of various UAAP/NCAA volleyball games.

The last time ginawang 1st game ang DLSU-ADMU was during the final four a few years back. Pero yung regular game was I think during 1989 ata or 1990.

Regular game din yata meron, pero at the very least, opening game nung season nung 2000, Ateneo-La Salle game agad yun (first time ng Studio 23 mag-cover). Yun yung game na bago pa lang si Mike Cortez, tapos tinambakan ng La Salle ang Ateneo by 24.
