She's not the most talked rookie this coming season 72 for nothing.

It was October of 2005. There were three new faces for UST HS, an era just after the DIMACULANGAN-LOPEZ-LAZARO Troika... Rhea was still the the team then.

They were #2, 8 and 9

The new trio could make a clean jumpserve, #2's seems like a floater, #9's was quite erratic but perfect form, and #8's was perfect.

And then the show came to place, these three played open...#2 jumps sky-high, #9 still erratic but spikes the ball in the fastest and sharpest angle, and #8 same with #9 but more consistent.

When Rhea finally suited for the College Team in Season 70, #2 was converted into a setter. Many of the few fans of the then starting #2 was quite disappointed. Because of her high jumps and strong spikes, she could be a hard-hitter. But after one season Coach Vicente was right, the replacement of the then Blue-Chip setter Dimaculangan sets the ball in excellence, the distribution, the stability..it was all there...

In the mean time, from the erratic, thin and shy #9, her massive improvement has captured media attention. Her skills was even more polished. Initially she was made to play Center, but due to UST High School's Height abundance, she was made to play open, to contribute unstoppable scoring. Stardom has gotten her, she's the much awaited...

But #8 did not fell short of #9, her consistency and strong spikes have made her famous in the high school volleyball scene, also her alluring beauty and figure made points too. She bared the character of The Leader in the UST High School Team...and now she is about to spike her way to the bigger arena...

#2 was Kimberly Fajardo, 5'7"
#9 was Alyssa Valdez 5'8" UAAP Jrs. Athlete of the Year
#8 was MARUJA BANATICLA 5'7", Shakey's Girl's V-league MVP

Sorry....fan kasi ako nitong Trio na to ever since, but let's give the focus to MARU now....

@hare very impressive..nasundan mo talaga sila..ako kasi late na..hehehe hard hitter pa rin si kim kahit setter na..and alyssa has gone on to win back to back mvp awards sa uaap and sana mag tatlo pa.. pero thread to ni maru so let's talk about her..mahusay na bata talaga,malakas pumalo,mataas tumalon,nag libero din ata sa rp juniors and winner ang jumpserves..taray ni maru may thread na!!!hahaha

omg, haha.nasubaybayan ko rin ang batang ito. When i watched the finals of uaap Girls VT, napatanong ako kung sino yung batang yun. Aside from her pretty face, may potential talaga siya. She really leaps high and a decent hard-hitter and well, she do jump serves.. Like the TS, im also one of the fan of Banaticla.

It remains to be seen kung magkakaroon ng immediate impact si Maru sa Tigresses. Magaling siya pero marami pang kailangan matutunan sa loob ng court. But still, a good addition sa rotation ng USTe na kailangan ng spiker.

pa-epal lang ako hehehe yep he means kimberly lazaro..she used to be an open spiker for the ustgvt..a really really talented open spiker from what i heard.di ko kasi sya napanood nuon eh,time na nila maru when i started to watch the ustgvt.if maru is able to adjust well agad sa level of play ng college volleyball then malaki maitutulong nya sa team.ust is lucky to have her :D

di ko alam anong klaseng jumpserve yung kay maru..basta MALUPET! sana gawin nya sa college..pero ok lang din kahit hinde.pag wvt medyo stop na ata sa jumserve.si rhea kasi may jumpserve din,si aiza meron na din dati..si santiago jumpserve din ata.pero keri lang mas ok din naman pag basta sure na serve lang.delikado kasi pag jump.anyhooo..hinde malayong humakot ng fans si maru.charming yung bata,lagi naka smile,and magaling talaga

hehe... ako naman mas gusto ko iyong mga nag jjump serve, para service pa lang atake na... ang ganda kaya ng serve ni aiza noong vleague this last october, kaya nga siya nag best server eh... sana i-utilize nila iyon, kahit risky ang jump serve eh worth naman iyong risk... sana may matuto sa pinas na jump serve na baon talaga, parang iyong sa international, para naman masabing nag iimprove na talaga ang level of playing ng volleyball dito sa atin...

Walang offer Ateneo sa kanya. UST lang talaga first choice na bata kasi ang course na gusto niya eh nasa USTe.

Speaking of jump serves.

UST WVT does not do jump serves. They play it cool, floating and safe unlike Ateneo's erratic but oftentimes awesome jump serves.

Can Maru start a trend? Or will she be allowed by the coaching staff?

The players are not advised to do the jump serve because of the risk of committing errors in the game.

Magaling talaga si Maru pumili..yung sasalihan nya may kalidad na edukasyon at champion team with proven track record. Mabuti nalang at kung may offer man yung iba kulay asul ay napahiya sa kanya bakit naman siya pupunta sa isang losing team? kung pwedeng pwede naman siya sa magaling na team? :lol:

watching their first game wasn't a good stand point to say that the tigresses are back in track...but earlier,i said to myself, if they get pass FEU,which they did,the chemistry is actually getting there and that they're getting back in track
...give Angge a few more games and she'll be back..she did well earlier but not what everyone who knew her then was expecting from her..a bit off-timing and there were some errors here and there but the court smarts is still there and her power seems to be coming back.Ate Rox..we all would agree that we might never see the old monster in her anymore..but she is trying*okay*..and the court smarts and shot selection and placement is still there..that will never go away.It was nice to see her trademark running spike off a combination..hehehe..imagine if the elevation was still there;)
Maizo...she just proved that she was never"just an option"..this is her time and this her game..every atack has power in it"kargado lahat"Coach August's Famed "Power Six" would see her as a utility and mostly was overshadowed by Ging,Vhen and Angge when it comes to offense but she is a monster in both defense and offense.What really strucked me and might still be a bit premature to say is that Maru(Banaticla) is not overrated...she is for real:naughty:!!!there were some rookie errors...and you gota understand her for that,but she is a star of this sport...her form and playing resembles a mix of Mayette Carolino,Luan Latigay and Angela Benting combined into one..many will argue but she played like she wasnt a rookie earlier.
Overall...it was a great night for UST WVT..and too bad..it was an off night for Rachel and the Lady Tams![/I]

University of Santo Tomas seized the solo lead after trouncing erstwhile co-leader Far Eastern University, 17-25, 28-26, 25-22, 25-17, Tuesday night in the Shakey’s V-League Season 6 second conference at the Arena in San Juan City.

Team skipper Aiza Maizo posted a conference high-26 points while comebacking Angeli Tabaquero chipped in 12 hits to lead the back-to-back seeking Tigresses to their second straight win.

The Tigresses dropped the first frame against the Lady Tams but bounced back by sweeping the next three sets to post a fitting follow-up to their 25-18, 17-25, 25-17, 25-16 opening-day victory over Adamson.

“Medyo tentative pa talaga sila. Nagkakapaan pa sa laro kasi hindi pa talaga ganun katagal na nakakapag-ensayo nang magkakasama. But hopefully, mga ilang games pa, makakapag-adjust na rin lahat ng mga players," said UST Coach Cesael de los Santos.

Cherry Vivas led the Lady Tams’ losing cause with 20 hits while Shaira Gonzales scored 19 points as FEU dropped to second spot in a tie with the Lady Falcons with a 1-1 win-loss slate.

UST’s solid blocking proved to be their primary weapon against the Lady Tams, posting 15 blocks in all, 11 from Maizo herself and the rest from Maika Ortiz.

Coach de los Santos was also satisfied with how quickly reinforcement Roxanne Pimentel and rookie Maruja Banaticla are adjusting to the UST system. The duo punched in 10 points each after posting only four and seven points, respectively, in their first outing.

“Sana magtuluy-tuloy na kasi malaking tulong talaga silang dalawa at sana hindi lang sila, mag-step up na rin sana yung iba," said de los Santos. - GMANews.TV

My sister and I wake up very early in the morning just to catch them in their game nung UAAP Jrs sa UE Gym. Imagine, if their game is 8am, we leave 630 am sa Las Pinas para makanuod.Haha That's how fan we are of this girl eversince, ofcourse together with Rhea, Alyssa, and all those who are still in UST High School

she's too good for a rookie. grabe kahit na bblock siya, sige pa rin. most of the rookies na alam ko frustrated agad pag nabablock pero siya, ang tapang. tigresang tunay!haha. can't wait for valdez and fajardo to graduate.haha.

may tanong ako, di ba dating attacker si fajardo??currently setter siya ng gvt??kung sa ust siya magcocollege babalik ba siya as attacker ulit since andiyan naman dmac as the setter???

Si kim at alyssa andito din ang pangalan :) haha si kim malakas pumalo sobra. kahit matagal ng setter ang laro nya pang spiker pa din ang palo,malupet.

may fans club na si maru?naks naman!nakakatuwa kasi andaming nakakapansin ngayon ng galing at tapang nya. mahusay na bata talaga yun at marami pa syang maipapakita.

Kahapon, Maruja didn't play badly. Na-slow down lang yung spikes niya nung SSC blockers. Pinalitan tuloy ni Caballejo.

It was one game where she did not shine. Well, I look forward to more of her fierce spikes in the coming games - quarter finals to hopefully finals (to championship).

I really think she is a front-runner for the Rookie of the Year award.

Question, diba madaming beses na siyang naging player of the game? 3 times out of seven games?

I wonder kung a first-timer like her can win the MVP award (granting na magaling talaga siya). ?? Hmmm..

as it has been said, shes just a rookie and she plays like a veteran. But it doesnt account that shes better than Maizo and Tabaquero. Siguro next year MVP candidate na siya. The last person na nagkaroon ng rookie-MVP ang VLeague eh si Balse.

As a Thomasian concerned about the volleyball team's future, I find her a truly exciting player who can contribute significantly to their campaign in future tournaments (UAAP, V-League, Unigames, etc.), as she is doing now.

This young girl really has that killer instinct, mala-Tabaquero and Aiza Maizo.

In some of the games I watched, stand-out si Maruja sa team. Sana nga she can be MVP.

Natuwa rin ako kay giant Santiago against San Sebastian College. Yes, she was blocked in all or most of her quick spike attempts, but she made up for them by her two (?) explosive running spikes and her stuff blocks. Coach Shaq (spelling not sure) should also train her to quick-spike na medyo malayo sa setter Dimaculangan. Like how Ortiz does it. Yun yung mahirap mabasa ng blockers. I commend Rhea also for that Rhea-Ortiz coordination.

Santiago lacked concentration, though, on two occasions that she served. Served the ball before the whistle. Funny, yes, but those incidents should tell her she should be more focused.

Go UST volleyball team, especially to my fave Maruja.

si dindin sana ma-improve pa ni coach shaq. si ortiz nga parang pandagdag lang last year pero ngayon humahataw at sometimes goto girl pa nila. and ortiz keeps on improving as middle. yung mga iba-bang style ng laro ng middle medyo nagagawa na nya ngayon. next year mas gagaling pa sya. fearless forecast she will be better than pimentel during her prime.

as for maru, mas lalakas pa sya. UST this year is more of a "team" than the previous ones. konting hagod pa sa floor defense na since kopong-kopong pa nila problema.

i appreciate Coach Shaq better now. UST's last game against FEU, i really wanna kill the libero. but Coach Shaq, sige pa rin ang coaching sa kanya. very patient. no wonder they have a good pool of players. he really develops them to be a good player. He's not into pulling them out from the game if they're not playing good. he just keeps on telling them what to do. Even ke Caballejo, kaasar na sa dami ng errors pero sige, play time pa rin.

on second thought, that's how you develop good players. to be really into the game and learn the ropes the hard way but with proper guidance from him.

Dindin, Maru and the other rookies are in good hands. as long as they're willing to learn. Go Dindin..go Maru...*okay*
