why the need to convert? if you'll play the media on a computer just use VLC- can play most if not all media files

AlltoAvi (http://alltoavi.sourceforge.net/download.php) is a good converter. It's an open source program so it's free. It doesn't really mimic the exact same font/appearance of the subtitle but it's pretty much readable. The best way to convert MKV to AVI is by manually doing it, although it's really hard. Good luck anyway.

What's your current situation (to prefer AVI over Matroska)? :(
Gusto ko lang maunawaan.. Hehe..

Baka may balak siyang iburn sa DVD ang video. Wala kasing MKV codecs ang mga DVD players ngayon kaya no choice kundi mag AVI ang tao.

For PS3, use mkv2vob.

Most DVD players will not support videos with a resolution higher than 480p.

You might want to get a Networked Media Tank (http://www.pinoyexchange.com/forums/showthread.php?t=376533&highlight=Networked+Media+Tank). Or build a cheap HTPC.

Kunsabagay.. Maugong noon ang DIVX support sa mga standalone players during the previous years. (Hehe.. Pinamumukhang luma na yung format eh no.. :p)

Most DVD players nowadays lalo na yung China made don't do the great leap of supporting Matroska (kahit na sabi nila HDMI yung output). Kung ako yung Chinese manufacturer sabihin ko "Hassle kaya, bakit ako magsu-support ng open format? Edi laging may firmware update (which is less likely to happen on these kind of players)?" :P

or gusto niya ilagay sa hard drive ng ps3? kaso hindi pa siya supported

Diba mas compressed ang MP4?

Best solution indeed. Kung kaya pa ng budget, Media Center na lang.. :D

It can burn MKV files but the result to the DVD would be crappy subtitles.

Yup.. Not a best practice to do so.. Medyo weird kasi ang pag-render pag from MKV to DVD.. Isis-shirk nya yung actual font size ng subtitles na parang akala mo sa MS Paint lang nag-resize, then it is slapped in the video, finally the video gets re-sized to a smaller resolution. Not a happy ending, diba? :hmm:

I've made that mistake 2 times already. I thought ConvertXtoDVD could actually burn a MKV file with no problem. When I played it on my DVD player, some random code-like crap starts appearing along with the subtitles making it hard to read. And the font just changed from Comic Sans MS color green to just plain Times New Roman color white.

I've been using Any Video Converter (http://filehippo.com/download_any_video_converter/) to convert mkv/rmv/hd files to avi and so far I haven't had any problems. I just add the video, select the settings re resolution and audio (i usually select 640x480 and 192kbps para mabilis) click convert and presto.

I've tried another converter - Xilisoft - but it messes with the subs or takes it out altogether (I frequently convert animes with hardsubs - haven't tried any video files with soft subs for the simple reason that I don't have any). With AVC, I never had to tinker with the subtitle settings.

MKV2VOB (http://www.mkv2vob.com/), it's the best out there.

For those who want to play it on their DVD players, I suggest you stick to the AXXO's and FXG's na lang.
