ever since my classmate from highschool introduced me to manga, japanese comics, i have become very much fascinated with them. almost everyone is very knowledgeable about aniime, especially the airplay it gets from philippine tv nowadays. but i really don't know if many know this, but many well-known anime actually appeared in manga first before becoming the big hits that they are now. akira toriyama's dragonball is one concrete example of this. and there are many more which have gone from this transition.
also, big hit anime not based on any manga were made into manga. this kind of manga was called the "film comics".
manga usually appeared in black and white. "film comics" are in colored because they were usually printed from the film prints of the anime.
manga is considered an art because differences on how the scenes, dialogues, emotions are presented depends on the author's vision.
so, enough of the dialogue, MANGA FANS OUT THERE, please post your favorite manga, the collections that you have, manga that you would recommend, those you rave about, and those that really rocks.

i was introduced to rumiko takahashi's ranma 1/2 when i was still in 1st year high school. during that time, i was no stranger to comicbook collecting because i was collecting x-men and some marvel comics that i can put my hands onto when i was in grade school. but due to some unavoidable circumstances, i stopped x-men. i wasn't collecting anything when the manga was introduced to me. i found the format very different (b&w), the artwork special, very different from american art, the story funny and themes very liberating (this was ranma 1/2 and the story depicts about this guy ranma who changes to a girl when doused by cold water and turns back to a guy when the water is hot). hey, it also has martial arts in it which was very interesting. from then on, i was hooked. but hey, i was only in high school then. i bought comics out of my own allowance and i don't ask money from my parents to buy them (obviously, it was because of the themes).
then out of curiousity, i discovered another work of takahashi-sensei. it was an earlier work, maison ikkoku. it is actually a love story between this "drop-out" student(ronin) who finally got to college and a young widow who just can't open her heart yet. they met in in the apartment maison ikkoku, where the student is a resident and the woman, the manager. all the fun starts as the residents and other characters meddle into their affair. this manga became very, very close to my heart.
when i was in 4th year hs, prices started to rise so i have to drop one title. i decided to drop ranma since i was able to watch the anime. last year, maison ikkoku finished its run. then i went back to ranma.
(note: i collected the manga from viz comics. the manga is translated into english. and is from left to right.)
then recently, i got matsumane shirow's manga appleseed book 1 out from an auction, just out of curiuosity. and it was during this time that my interest in manga was envigorated, because for almost 6 years, i only collected one title. not that i don't like takahashi-sensei's works, i really love them, but now i wish to open myself more about the art that is manga. i believe there is something that separtes manga from anime. each one is a different art. my appreciation for manga now grew deeper.
now in college, i am now in an easier position to get into this hobby that i loved ever since. there are many titles that interest me right now. i'm planning to collect hayao mizayaki's nausicaa of the valley of wind which will be very difficult to find now, i guess. what's with a little patience. :)
cheers! keep on reading!

...but definitely an enthusiast :)
The manga I loved most was, of course, Rurouni Kenshin. It's also good to entice RK viewers to read them because they contain some stuff set aside by the RK anime cartoonists.
And I also like Battle Angel Alita, though I haven't had the pleasure of reading much of it... :(

Actually, noong High School ako i bought this this first episode of "Robotech Macross Sago" by Comico. Then binili ko rin iyong isang comics kung saan namatay si Roy Fokker. Then i got lucky.
It's the "Macross: Do you remember Love" the Movie that i bought 7 yrs ago sa Japan Town. Binili ko rin iyong soundtrack niyang "Macross Complete" (3CDs). Mahirap na makahanap non ngayon. Nakita ko rin iyong artist book ng "Macross 2", "Gundam", at "Capcom". Kaso wala akong perang dala non.
Recently i just bought an anime DVD called "Record of Lodoss War" (2DVDs) at "Record of Lodoss War:Chronicles of the Heroic Knight" (6DVDs). magandang story at nakakatawa.

ME! ME! It's my favest of all. Related thread to reply: http://www.pinoyexchange.com/forums/showthread.php3?threadid=36766 Regarding the topic my brother gave me a complete set of an unknown compilation of manga titled "Guard Dog" I forgot who the artist is (it's in Japanese). GREAT ARTWORK!!! Semi-serious based on the flow of the illustrations. My other favorite is Lum. I discovered the cartoon first in Star Channel Mandarin years ago. Then of course Ranma 1/2 (though I don't have the collection). :D

hey cool! marami rin pala rito collects manga.
ruroni kenshin fans, yung manga ba that you collect is in japanese? i can't recall kasi kung lumabas siya in english translated. :)
yeah! Battle Angel Alita is really highly recommended. the story and art is by yukito kishiro. here's the plot of the series: when Doc Ido, a talented cyborg physician, finds Alita, she has lost all memory of her past life. But when he reconstructs her, she discovers her body still instinctively remembers the Panzer Kunst, the most powerful cyborg fifghting technique ever known. bounty hunter, singer, racer, killer: as the secrets of Alita's past unfold, every day is a stuggle for survival...
Saitou: i would just like to ask what Blade of the Immortal is all about?
Darkshader: sayang nawala yung collection mo. what was it like in Japan town?:D also, i would like to ask if you could give a brief description on "Record of Lodoss war". hindi siya manga but sounds interesting.
kartoonista: you should try maison ikkoku! may video na lumabas para doon. i have the first 2 volumes of the video. you may just like it. :D
kane-warhead: i would just like to ask what harmageddon is all about?
vajula: did you get to complete any takahashi title?
howardsaavedra: your manga collection is really cool! how do you managed to come with your collection? can you give some tips. ang lupit ng collection mo! as far as i can remember, ang alam ko i was able to cover almost all of maison ikkoku. i collect the comic book issues kasi. the other issues na hindi ko naabutan when i started
it, i bought the graphic novels. tapos bumili pa rin ako ng ibang graphic novel kaya nag-overlap sa comic book issues ko. as far as i can remember, may mga lost issues (viz comics' fault). at least 2 issues ata yun and yun lang talaga ang wala pa ako. i failed to collect inu-yasha. how does it compare to ranma/maison ikkoku? :)
cheers!

true to what arete said, it's really hard to collect manga or any comicbook for that matter because you need to aside a fairly large amount of money to continue it. just like what happened to me. i collect the english translated ones which probably cost more than manga in original japanese. but definitely these english translated manga cost more than the regular american comic books (marvel, dc, image, etc.).
so during the time the prices went up, i had to choose to purchase only one manga title per month because it was really very hard to save and budget your allowance during that time (that was around 3rd-4th year highschool, and there were an awful lot of things you got to do/spend around that time!; right now, though nakakahinayang na i didn't get to continue some titles, i'm still very happy that i got to finish one manga title!:D).
actually i managed to buy some several issues of x-men during this time but due to the same reasons stated, i wasn't able to continue it.
some 2 years back, i managed to sneak in and buy comics of whilce portacio's stone while collecting maison ikkoku. hey, even though i like manga, i still like other comic titles(american and most especially filipino!:)), but is actually a different issue altogether. actually, i was only able to manage it because stone which was supposed to be a monthly installment, came out was so irregular that you have to guess which month it will come out (stone is actually already finished with only 8 issues in the span of maybe 2 years which i got to complete).
it was only during 2nd half of last year that i went back to an x-men title, x-force, during portacio's stint there and even up to now(i like continuity!:D). this is the only time i really managed to juggle again collecting 2 comicbooks (together with ranma 1/2; maison ikkoku finished its run in viz comics early last year) at the same time. i'm actually planning to collect another title.
so, what's this crap all about?! i just like to go tackle an issue every comicbook collector has trouble with (unless your mom funds your comic collection) most especially manga which costs more! hey, when you grow up and you look back at your collection, you will read it again but then miss out on the part you failed to purchase. you must be disciplined in order to continue this hobby and other hobbies you are into.
cheers! happy reading!
