MANILA, Philippines – Arellano University, Angeles U Foundation and Emilio Aguinaldo College have all agreed to see action in this year’s NCAA, making it a 10-team field in the basketball competitions set to start June 27 at the Araneta Coliseum.

League president Fr. Mat de Jesus, OSB, of host San Beda yesterday said the three schools had agreed to the conditions earlier set by the league before they could play as guest teams in the country’s oldest collegiate league.

“All three schools have accepted the invitation and conditions, which means we’ll be having 10 teams this season,” said De Jesus, who arrived Thursday night from an official trip in Singapore.

The three teams will thus join Mapua, Letran, San Sebastian, Jose Rizal U, St. Benilde, Perpetual Help and defending three-time champion San Beda.

Arellano, EAC and AUF all agreed on the league conditions, including participation in six mandatory sports – basketball, volleyball, football, swimming, cheerleading and centerpiece track and field.

The guest teams will also pay a fee worth P1.5 million and a cash bond amounting to P500,000, which is refundable at the end of the season.

The three also agreed to abide by the NCAA constitution and by-laws, ground rules and all other league rules and regulations and respect the decisions of the Policy Board and Management Committee chaired by De Jesus and Jose Mari Lacson, respectively, also of San Beda.

Athletes, coaches and team officials of all three guest schools must also agree to arbitrate, in lieu of court litigation, in any and all disputes that may arise from fielding a team in Season 85.

De Jesus, however, stressed that the three schools’ acceptance as guest teams does not mean gaining league membership.

i think what NCAA did was a smart move. this is also to revitalize the league considering the absence of pcu.

i do expect more action and more support coming from respective schools.

Three NCAA ‘additions’ flabbergasted

By Beth Celis
Philippine Daily Inquirer

SHORTLY AFTER guest schools Arellano University, Emilio Aguinaldo College and Angeles University Foundation were assessed P2 million each (P1.5 million for tournament fee, P500,000 for bond), the NCAA management committee informed them that athletes who participated in the last NCRAA (National Capital Region Athletic Association) would not be eligible to play in this season’s tournaments.

According to the committee, an athlete is required a year’s residency if he participated in another major league the previous year like, for example, the NCRAA. The requirement does not apply to freshmen and athletes who did not compete in any organized tournament in the previous year.

The three schools were reportedly flabbergasted. Arellano and EAC, both NCRAA regulars, had agreed to join the NCAA even only as guest teams, based on the premise that the athletes they had trained in the NCRAA will be “elevated” to the NCAA.

Now the league is telling them to scrounge around for new players. They will have to start from scratch. In the case of basketball, they only have two months to form a new team since the opening is set on June 27.

Time constraint is not the only problem. Where will they get their players? A basketball Team B is definitely not competitive, assuming any of the three schools has one.

An all-freshman lineup, on the other hand, will be a pushover.

“For sure, the three newcomers will become the whipping boys of the league—which defeats the purpose of acquiring additional teams, as envisioned by television coveror ABS-CBN,” said an official of one of the schools.

He pointed out that in the case of the College of St. Benilde, the school was allowed to field in their NCRAA athletes when they joined the NCAA some years back.

Actually in CSB's case, not everyone in the 1997-1998 NCRAA line-up made it to the NCAA. Example of players from the Blazers line-up who didn't make it to the 1998-1999 NCAA season was Coach Caloy Garcia, Tomie Nordell and Nikko Santos. The only player that I remember who got in from the NCRAA wars was Junie Lopez plus a few freshmen recruits at that time like Jay Lapinid. :smokin:

What worries me is that players from the guest teams are over the age limit and they didn't abide by certain rules that the Policy Board implemented like years of eligibility from the NCRAA to the NCAA because there is no existing MOA between the two leagues. That is the root concern of the Policy Board, and that is the howl of indignation by the guest teams. No wonder the entrance fee is refundable less expenses. :glee:

The real issue here will be years of eligibility and the age limit. CSB didn't bring everyone from the NCRAA and the they had to grab key transferees (UST team B's like Jondan Salvador and Magpayo.) before becoming a champion team in 2000. :D

And the league relies on ticket sales in a neutral playing venue. That is why they usually hold it in RMC or Ninoy, Cuneta Astrodome, San Juan Arena, PSC Ultra, and Araneta Coliseum. That is why for the guest teams, it will be hard for them to adjust to the rules of the league. ;)

Inannounce na ba kung kailan ang opening?

i assume mga 2nd or 3rd saturday of July... either July 11 or July 18..

10 teams means 5 games on the opening?

we now have more teams and shall have more games per week, i guess its about time to televise also the monday games, and add atleast one more match per week.

with that score, baka may pag-asa pa ang sbc women's team na manalo over arellano...san sebastian? i do expect scores na below 10s na straight sets for the lady stags kahit wala na sina latigay at sasa pag ganyan...i hope maging competitive ang women's volleyball (na ginawa nang mandatory...which means, mapua must have a team na this season 85 dahil meron na ang san beda at jru)...
